Firefox 4 Beta for Android was just released and announced by the Firefox team! The beta 1 of Firefox for Android is now available for download from the website.
Awesome! Thanks for the news
force close on htc legend 2.1
29mb DAMN!! i hope it alot better then the last Fennec. downloading now and will update on how it operates on the Hero.
***EDIT***
doesnt work on the Hero
force close on wildfire froyo
Can anyone get this started? It won't run on my ZTE Blade (Android 2.1/MSM7227).
Screenshots would be nice, if anyone can get it running!
Runs on my Moto Droid
A couple of screens as requested:
First run:
Fugly fonts* when zoomed-out:
Crisp fonts* when zoomed-in:
No flash:
Performance was horrible on my Nexus One (Cyanogenmod Nightly clocked at 1036 MHz) and pinch-to-zoom was a kinda wonky compared to the default browser. Haven't tested addons, sync, etc yet and I don't think I will, everything was just too slow to bother. Hopefully they'll improve that and if you're lucky enough it might perform better on your device.
*Note that I'm using the new Ubuntu font instead of the default Droid Sans. Droid Sans might scale better when zoomed, although the Ubuntu font looks ok in the default browser even when zoomed out a lot. Anyway, don't take the font thing too seriously unless someone confirms it.
Hope this helped somehow.
Runs awesome on my vibrant
Layout is similar to dolphin HD with the swipe L/R for settings etc.
Scrolling is a tad glitchy having occasional hang ups
Pinch zooming is good but text takes a few seconds to re-render
Downloads are nicely handled too... I downloaded a 4.4 mb mp3 simply by clicking download no extra menus... It instantly puts a notification up that says it's downloading therm changes to let you know its done
So far so good for beta needs improvement but this is a huge leap from the alpha I tried a few months ago
Sent from my SGH-T959
Edit: found the minimal requirements page.
Not working on my samsung gt i5500 can be hardware requirements not satisfied, I have to search more about it.
Works on my HTC HD2 with Mdeejay FroYo HD v.3.4.
in my hero don't work.
froyo 2.2
when i open the aplication, it close...
I installed the Beta on my Desire without any glitches...However, Firefox 4 takes almost 50MB of the internal space after my first run without visiting any site... using the browser is a pain...Desire slows down by atleast 30% of its original speed... Better with alternate available options...
Running on my Galaxy S, stock firmware.
No flash though, and doesnt run the built-in YouTube player..
Works on my HD2 running mdeejay's Desire Z based ROM; performance is horrible, though.
I really like the idea of having a Firefox-ish experience on my cellphone, as it's my preferred browser on PC as well, but it simply performs too badly for me to consider using regularly at this point.
i cant download from the link in first post
plz somone upload in xda. tanx
why are you guys posting the problems here.
just go to their page and post issues with their browser there.
works with hyperdroid....but still can't play farmville... Hope the final release can play flash

Same here (on an Incredible). 46MB?!?!?! WTF??? Worse yet, despite the fact that I still have 400MB of phone storage, 2GB of sdcard storage, and 2GB of internal storage left, I continued to get the "Low on space" warning after installing FF, and the accompanying inability to install/update anything from the market that comes with this warning. I uninstalled, and all is well again.

Because this is a discussion thread about Firefox 4b for Android, and so we are discussing Firefox 4b for Android.
Epic 4g, it runs okay, I seem to have some rendering problems when creating a new tab. As in the link loads but the page stays blank.
Dolphin, Opera, and SkyFire(Best). Are still all better options currently. This is still beta though....very beta.

here is a post Cyanogen did back in June 30th of 2010
It’s been just under a week since Google released Froyo (Android 2.2) into the open-source world and we’ve made great progress on CyanogenMod-6 already. Approximately 20 of us on the CM team are working hard on merging all of the community-developed extras in, as well as porting to new devices. Google did a great job and really gave us the best foundation to start from this time around.
Here’s where we stand so far.. Most of the CyanogenMod extras have been merged. Some features are being reworked (like trackball settings), new device ports are well underway. The first devices to see CM6 experimental releases will most likely be the Nexus One and Droid simply because those are the devices that “just work”. The Dream/Sapphire port has everything working but one small issue remains. Wes Garner has the Slide port well underway. I don’t have a status report of the Desire, Incredible, and Evo versions at this time.
I’m expecting that we should have some experimental releases by the weekend, but please don’t spam us asking for ETAs.. We are just as excited to get this out as you are

Regarding updates to CM5.. A small update will be coming this weekend to fix a few bugs but the focus will remain on CM6!
Thanks to everyone who has been supporting us with testing, bugfixing, code, new features, and of course donations. CM is what it is because of the community. Thank you!
just curious for us not using froyo will there be an update to CM5??..

Bamp?
10char? anybody what to discuss the promise he made??
This is really not good that he promised something and then didn't fullfil this promise, but honestly... CM6 is so much better than CM5.08, personally I am not even thinking on trying 2.1 ROMs, I really don't understand why to bother with older software if newer gives you not only new features and same if not better speed and stability.
There is no point. Same reason why we don't see any progress on donut roms. They're old. 2.2 runs one hell of a lot better than any 2.1 roms did. Give up on CM 5 and come to the now.
I regret moving away from Donut (CM4.x). For me CM6 works worse than CM5 and CM 5 works worse than CM4. The only reason I am staying with CM6 is the hope that 6.1 will improve the situation. The main issue is the lack of memory and what follows as consequence (can't view big websites, can't take photos, apps close themselves due to lack of RAM, push mail does not work, etc.)
These problems are not always occuring, but they occur most of the time, especially if the last reboot is more than 2 or 3 hours in the past. I recommend waiting for CM6.1 and then reassess whether it is viable to switch.

This is a punishment for lack of exploring. I've been using 2.2 ROMs now for a while and aren't having any of the issues you're having. Did you mess with any of the cm settings? What about the adw launcher settings? All of these play a part in the functionality of the ROM. Some advice:
Under CM Settings > Performance Settings:
Code:
Use Compcache @ 25%
Disable JIT
Disable Surface dithering
Make sure Lock Home in Memory is checked
VM Heap Size 32m
For ADW Launcher:
Screen Preferences:
Code:
Make sure you are only using 3. This helps with the slowness
System Preferences:
Code:
Disable Scrollable Widget Support
Check System Persist
UI Settings:
Code:
Uncheck Desktop Dots
Uncheck Secondary ActionButtons
Uncheck desktop Indicator
With these settings, I have no problems running any 2.2 rom on my G1. Also, I have widgets on each of my screens.
when you press anything in setting or any app.. does it load instantly?
or is there a second or 2 lag? i strip my donut roms completly remove everything google including market, and i have 35.43 mb free on my data partition. its stupidfast. but csdi is the fastest @ that setting.
most of the time when i end apps with task killer i have 55 mb free.
so i can load it up with widgets if needed.
what im trying to say i have achieved that speed with froyo but only if my cpu is clocked @ 650+ all the time and super stripped. gah i rambled.. i hope you understand what im tying 2 say.
HI, Dolphin Browser HD v5.0 has released finally to the Android market. I have been waiting for such a long time, although that I have used their 4 betas.
I can notice that they have made much progress in the UI, settings and the performance (fix many bugs).
First, I like the smooth tab bar. It’s better to let the tab bar stay on top and hide the address. But it’s ok now. If themes are installed, the bar color are changed. That’s great for me.
Second, they have done much work on the Quick menu. Bookmarks, history, settings, add-ons, themes and gesture are included in the Quick menu. The background color has kind of texture.
Last but not least, I can successfully browser most websites without FC or hanging. It means that their performance has been much improved. It almost closes to perfect.
So download it, I’m sure you wouldn’t regret. LOL.
Been using the betas and now the final myself.
Bravo Dolphin, great work.
I don't browse the web that much on my phone but from my experiences so far with betas, this is the best browser out there at the moment.

Dude, i have seen your post just now. what's new in your post is not the new features in HD5.0. they already exist in HD4.6.1.
but thank you to remind me.
I just downloaded it. I've been using the dolphin mini browser for a few months now. I hope it's better.

not as fast as th trusted opera mini, and it's ability to sync bookmarks with any phone I use. I know on opera mini the speed compromises the quality, but opera is way faster than any other browser in my opinion.

I loved Opera for its speed and usability, however I never liked how it handled flash content, or the fact that it doesn't.
Not always having the default web site was a negative for me as well.

I switch between Opera, Opera Mini, Dolphin and Dolphin mini all the time. Just can't make up my mind.
I am liking HD 5.0 though.
Sweet gonna go try this browser
The biggest change is there is no google inserted Ads any more,
There is no need to buy Dolphin license to block Ads.
Well, This browser is really better then the ones that comes normally with android?
And if yes, what special does it have?

UC Browser, facing tough competition from Opera Mini, Bolt and perhaps many other browsers, is no doubt constantly improving and taking steps forward to a better browsing on mobiles. It has evolved from just a crap browser with a great download manager to an excellent browser. Perhaps UC Browser is the most feature rich mobile browser till date. While some may argue it lacks javascript support, Opera Mini also don't. And it is not possible to provide javascript on low end phones. On high end phones like Android, it supports javascript though. I must say it provides much smoother mobile browsing experience that you can enjoy on the go always.

I've always liked this browser. Even when it was buggy as hell back in my Windows Mobile days it still was great for downloads. I'll give this new version a shot. Thanks!
Edit: It seems the Android Market still lists version as 7.8, which I already have installed.

Haha, you made me laughing. This is now the fourth time I try FF mobile, and the user experience still does not improve.
I installed Firefox from Play Store, cleared the RAM (170MB free) and after starting, the first thing the app did was crashing. I opened the settings and wanted to look for an user agent setting but I found out that there is none. When closing the settings Firefox crashed. After a restart of the app I opened three tabs with this websites: chip.de (PC layout), xda-developers.com (homepage), google.de. Before doing that I looked for the memory usage: Firefox needed 54MB. After the loading process Firefox with 3 tabs took 81MB away! Also the font sizes on Chip.de were wrong.
Then I cleared the RAM just as I did before opening Firefox. In Opera Mobile (desktop user agent) I opened the 3 tabs and 2 additional ones: AndroidPIT and Facebook. With all these 5 tabs Opera Mobile uses only 52MB of RAM.
When loading and opening the pages (I sit right next to the WLAN router) Firefox needed much more time than Opera Mobile. Also the user interface of Firefox is not as smooth as in Opera Mobile.
I know that Firefox has addon support and on a tablet or a powerful phone with more RAM it may be no problem, but on our phone and that's what I am talking about, browsing with Firefox is simply no fun. Its unstable, slow and ressource hungry on RAM and CPU (= stuttering)
On my XPS 15 I use Firefox Auroa 14 and I like it very much because I is very customizable eventhough it is not as fast as Google Chrome, but here the difference is not really big. Furthermore DownThemAll! is only available on FF.
The biggest amount of RAM FF used on my PC was 400-500 MB (normal usage 100-200 MB) but this does not matter, because with 4x2,8 GHz and 8GB RAM you do not feel this and it is nothing compared to the amount of free RAM. Pages load fast, scrolling is smooth, etc...
You do not have these things on a phone and everytime I tried Firefox it only felt like a port of the original programm without being really optimized for the usage and the limitations of phones.
But hey: I've got a life, I'm not stupid, I'm not angry and I've only said what I feel when using Firefox... I'm tired of all thes typical "What's the best browser" wars all around the web.
Have a nice day
Taraen

I originally posted this for the oneplus one, but theoretically it should benefit any device using the snapdragon processor and maybe other processors too?
The code is found here:
https://www.codeaurora.org/xwiki/bin/Chromium+for+Snapdragon/WebHome
If you try to build it takes a long time to get the code so be patient.
Basically this is an optimized browser made for the snapdragon processor. I have been running it for a few weeks and it is pretty solid. Really fast. I did some benchmarks vs firefox and chrome and it is between 10% - 30% faster. It just seems snappier than other browsers (Chrome and Firefox). If any one can benchmark it against other browsers I would appreciate if you could post the results.
Here are images of the benchmarks.

Also if you have an older version of the SWE browser you will have to uninstall it since I signed it with a different key.

I have put an updated version of swe browser on the play store. I have been using this for the last 3 weeks. I modified it slightly from the qualcomm version since the qualcomm version tries to launch apps from google search.

This is probably the best browser out there in my opinion.
It looks and feels like aosp browser and it's pretty good, if only it had account sync and quick controls like the aosp it'd be just perfect.

Oh i'm so excited to try this! A while back I read about this and have always wanted to try it. The problem is no one was actively building it and I didn't want to try building it myself. Thanks for taking the time to build it.

Is the size of your browser justified ? Cause many other are smaller except chrome ....
@magic_man
Hello, I've been trying to compile m46 for a few days now and i'm too running into problems.
The main problem I've been facing is when im trying to run gclient sync.
It says that the URL in the gclient is different that the one in the local checkout (~./src).
The first one is git://codeaurora.org/quic/chrome4sdp/chromium/[email protected]/remotes/origin/m46
While the second is git://codeaurora.org/quic/chrome4sdp/chromium/src
Any ideas?
I would just try deleting it and trying again. Can you post your .gclient file?
The download link does not work anymore.

It's the one from here:
https://www.codeaurora.org/xwiki/bin/Chromium+for+Snapdragon/m42_build_instructions but instead of m42 it's m46. Anyway I think i found out the solution to that. It's because i have first used:
git clone git://codeaurora.org/quic/chrome4sdp/chromium/src and then ran gclient sync.
Anyways, as the instructions on the code aurora wiki are not very clear can you please tell me the exact steps to build m46?

I don't entirely know what's wrong, is it something with their DEPS file? I noticed libjingle was moved to webrtc, and the real commit can be found here.
So, anybody know what to do?
I resolved all my previous problems and i've been facing the same issue too. Does anyone know how to solve it?
