[Q] Possibly Mechanical Question regarding screen blanking. - General Questions and Answers

I've recently playing around with my Desire, and I noticed something a little odd, which I'm hoping someone who knows hardware better than me can answer. With most of them (specifically, RCMixS although I saw it happen with another,) when I press the power button to shut down/lock the screen, the screen does something unusual. Normally, when you do this, the screen blanks at once, all pixels simultaneously. With the custom one, it has a similar effect to the old-style CRT tvs/monitors (screen blanks from outside to middle, leaving middle line which then narrows and vanishes. Difficult to describe in words, but if you know old TV's, you'd have seen it.)
Question is, is this a side-effect of the software being a little too beefy for the classic desire's hardware to fully handle, or is it likely to be a bug?

LOL, it's a feature. It was introduced in Gingerbread and is well liked, which is why you'll also find it in custom ROMs. As you said, it is supposed to mimic an old CRT.

Colour me embarrassed. I was searching on screen blank rather than screen off
Ah well. I must say I'm going to buck the trend in that I actually prefer the old way. Ah well. Nothing stays the same Thanks for the heads-up.

Touch Sensitivity

Hey is anyone elses GTab's touch sensitivity kind of off?
I noticed, compared to the iPad and Galaxy Tab, some times it takes me 2-4x of tryinng to press something to get it going.
Its almost like the screen cant pick it up sometimes. And sometimes when scrolling, it selects things, when im just Trying to scroll..
Also the top left HOME button on screen is always iffy, most times ill need 2-4 more times 2 press it to get it going.
I am using TNT 2.2.
Anyone else noticed this? i feel like its hardware.
Definetely not as responsive as my EVO. Maybe its the cheap screen. I wish it could be fixed via software, but fat chance. I guess not all capacitive screens are created equal.

You nailed it. IMO Samsung has been making the best color screens for years.
Have had absolutely no problems with touchpad responsiveness from my gTab... Just as sensitive and responsive as my Dinc.
Really does seem like this hardware is hit or miss... Some tabs have no issues some have many.
You guys are just plain spoiled. I've gone through Palm IIIx to now the gTablet, and it just simply has the most responsive touch screen that I've ever used, but I've had recent experience with the dreadful Augen GT and the slightly less dreadful White Pandigital Novel, both of which had worse touch screens than other devices that I've used.
One thing that I do, do for the gTab though is to clean the screen quite a bit. At a minimum I do so before every use as I find the fingerprint/body oils buildup to be annoying in fairly short order and it might have some impact on touch responsiveness. It's the worst fingerprint magnet that I've ever seen actually...
No issues here with single touch sensitivity, pretty good on that. Just as good as my Nexus One. Multitouch and pinch-to-zoom still a bit flaky. I am hopeful that will be resolved by software and/or driver improvements, as it was on the Nexus One.
The only issues I have are when the screen is too dirty or too clean. When I really scrub and clean the glass off entirely, at first it's a bit too "sticky" almost when my finger contacts it - maybe that's because it's winter here in the Northeast and my skin is dry. Once I've used it a bit and it gets some finger grease on it, it works perfectly. But if it gets grit or solid dirt on it, that can definitely interfere with the touch screen too, as with any capacitive screen.
I suspect the optimal thing would be a really good screen protector that's easy to clean and has that smooth finger contact feeling out of the box, like the iPad's glass does, for example, which I think has something to do with the oleophobic coating.
Typing this on my gtablet. The issue for me is the keyboard. There are parts of the screen that are unresoonsive making some letters not get tapped. The A key and l keys in particular. As a result I can't type smoothly or naturally because I will make several errors along the way. This does not happen onky iphone or my wires ipad.
it might bemy rrleason for sending it back as it takes too ongoing totyr correctly and I get tire d of all the corrections.
Well if your using the stock tnt keyboard, it sucks. We can learn from the ipad, with the size of the screen it has huge keys that cover a lot more of the screen then our stock tnt keyboard. I use smart keyboard pro with the key heights set to maximum and it works so much better, like 100x better. Even has voice to text.
Can people check their keyboard? I find that if I type most of the keys they type fine. However, the letter a key seems to only work when pressed offcenter which prevents. From typing properly as I must deliberately slow down and make sure it is correctly typed otherwise I get many errors. Could this be a defect in my screen?
Or is this a ui problem with tnt?
This could be a deal breaker as I misspelled every word if. Has h letter A
Letter A
I have the same problem with the letter A, and sometimes P. Otherwise touch is great
Figured why this tablet is driving me nuts. There are two dead zones on this tablet. Someone please do this test so I can figure out if this is just my tablet or all g tablets.
Download mulitouch vis test. Do rapid light touches in the area where the 'a' key is and delete key are. If I do this test in the middle of the screen it registers every single tap. But in those two areas I can sometimes tap 10 times in a row and not have a single tap register.
If this all g tablets then I think it's going back.
Also is there a keyboard with arrow keys? Trying to place the cursor can be a real pain.
Agreed bout the dead spots. The stock tap n tap western keyboard seems tominimize them due to the angles but if I try another keyboard I miss the a and the return button all the time

Downloaded the app as well because I, too, am having the same screen non-responsiveness issue. Lo and behold the area where the "L" key is is a pretty dead spot. It would register about 40% of the quick taps I did in that area. Is this is a software issue? If so, I can live with it and hope our wonderful devs release a software build that resolves this otherwise, this thing may be going back because it's driving me up the wall!
I do see the occasional missed tap here and there, but no consistent dead areas that I've noticed (the A and L buttons on keyboard seem fine to me).
Multitouch sensitivity is wayyyyy mis-calibrated though - you have to use very heavy finger presses to get multitouch to register. This is some sort of driver or calibration issue that should be easily solved.
I found a binary called TSCalibration in the /system/bin directory on my VEGAn ROM G Tablet. Tried running it from terminal, but it seems to be looking for a calibration.ini file on the SDCard. I'd be willing to bet we could figure out how to fix some of the touchscreen issues with some work, because I suspect they are principally software related.
If your issues with the touchscreen are anything like this...exchange it...
My new one requires very little effort if any at all to get the screen to respond...
However, if you're talking about the once in a while miss of a touch...yes, I agree with cutterjohn....you're spoiled. Return the device asap, so I could pick it up from an outlet...please?

There is a big difference between these dead spots and the occasional miss. I have no problem with the occasional miss. I just have to adjust to how my finger touches the tablet to get more consistent hits.
There are areas of my tablet that consistently do not behave like the other areas. Does that sound normal to you? I can't have a tablet where anything in the 2 corners is extremely inconsistent. If I have the tablet oriented a certain way the soft-buttons get put into one of the bad corners and that is really frustrating.
I don't think it is how I am holding it because the problem follows the physical corners and it is not relative to my hand. So that rules that out. And I washed my hands and gave the tablet a good cleaning so dirt/grease/grime is not an issue either. It could have been too clean but why only two corners?
I have many weeks to go on my 30 days so I will keep screwing with it to see if I can come up with anything that is a workaround or explains why it is happening. It is insanely fast and it's modding future looks extremely bright with such talented people. If I get fed up enough, I'll exchange it and hopefully get one with a even touch response for the whole screen or simply return it and wait a couple more months for Honeycomb tablets.

Whoa. That video was pretty bad. While mine is not like that (thank God), I just tried hitting the app drawer key and it only registered after the 13th tap?!?! seriously wtf. While it isn't a "dead zone" per se, that's still pretty bad. There has to be a software fix to recify this issue with the right side of the screen. (my "L" and "delete" button are pretty bad as well).
THAT is a defective product...
I'll do another video to compare with my new one...WITH funky assed salty sweat all over the screen. Works flawlessly...
Is your model that is working well running stock firmware and keyboard?
mine is tent lite and the stock keyboard is ok. It if I try to use the alternative keyboards then I get consistent misses on key presses especially on the letter a.
I'm always tapping *constantly*, like 10-20 times on certain spots around the corners and edges of the screen, I'm about to return mine because of this.. Believe I'm still in the 2 weeks with office depot, will have to go snag the $350 one over at sears and hopefully it will come with a screen protector this time (this one I have didn't come with one, wonder if that has to do with the dead spots)..

[Q] Anyone got a decent screen off sound?

As I'm sure we all do, I love the funky screen off animation on the Nexus S. In the past, on my N1, I've messed about with alternative lock sounds and thought it would be epic to find one that makes a kind of electronic zippy kind of noise when locking, to go with the animation.
I've tried looking on freesound but it's hard to know what to search for!
Anyone got any ideas or, better still, an appropriate sound effect.
i actually find the stock screen off sound to be quite matching to the screen effect
like an old TV turning off
I guess, but I like change
I'm after something that sounds the way the animation looks, if that makes sense. Of course, the lock actually happens after so it probably wouldn't work that well anyway
Try these
Try one of these. Just rename Lock.ogg. Back up org to Lock.bak
I made a thread about this a long time ago:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878031
There several different sounds there, check those out.
I still have not found the perfect "TV turn off sound".

G2x LCD Backlight bleed issue, pretty bad [pic]

Looks like this is going to be a larger issue than I thought. Major Manufacturer defect it sounds like. Engadget mentioned it on test unit.
Android 2.2 has a white notification bar so people don't and wont notice it, but boot screen, games, or video's with black it is noticeable and is NOT acceptable. Android 2.3 black notification bar you'd see it every time you look at phone.
I just got my brand new G2x today, and noticed this in the first 10 seconds. I'll be getting it replaced asap. Sadly can't do in store replacement cuz ordered online, different systems. So I have to wait for another to come in the mail.
http://yfrog.com/h4ey8fmj
This is during a video, that is WAY to much, it is also on the bottom of same side, but not as bad. So for those that cant tell, both right and left of the top of the phone has bleeding
MyTouch4G left, and the G2x with bleed on right!
Not good at all.
I have this problem as well, hopefully the replacement unit doesn't have the same issue :/
I have the same problem. Replacement units plus brick and mortar launch I smell backordered
Called store and store purchases can be replaced, but if you bought online then you must go through online for the new one. I might just go buy one in store tomorrow, and return my online purchase. lol.
Instead of waiting for a replacement to come in the mail.. this is BS though, they had plenty of time to check for these sort of things.
Both right and left have it when in portrait. So holding the phone for daily use, you can't see it, but on the top, both sides have pretty bad bleeding, the left (not in picture) is not as bad, but very close. overall this is terrible to see happening on such an amazing device. All the excitement I had coming home to open this, went to **** within 10 seconds when I saw that on boot screen.
uhhh.
Update, I can't even adjust my screen brightness, the option is greyed out on my phone. Anyone else with that problem?
Here is another shot using the app called DRAW!, screen goes black and you can draw on it, check out the difference.
MyTouch 4G on left, G2x on right. lol.

That happened on mine when I skipped the setup wizard (hit "Exit") during the first bootup.
This is not good...
Calling T-Mobile about this **** tomorrow..... vibrant problems to sgs4g problems now this!?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Try exchanging it.
A little part of me died when i saw this issue... I am going in the store early tomorrow... guess i have to take a hoodie to create a dark environment and check for bleeding... did this happen right away like out of the box or after a few reboots and such?
I have a SLIGHT backlight bleed (not really noticeable) on the top left and even less on the bottom left - however, this doesn't affect the usability of the phone and I think you're just picking things to slam the G2x on. NO PHONE IS EVER PERFECT! Get over your nitpicking and move on or go to another phone - pretty much guaranteed that whatever replacement you get is going to have the same issues. End of story. Deal with it and move on (it only really affects blacks anyway) or go to another phone.

Or just wait for the SGS2 which might have an unlocked boot loader but will never get source when CM8 w/ 2.4 comes out and it's a whirlwind of hating samsung like w/ my sgs vibrant........i'll stick w/ LG maybe they will release source much faster idk, i think i can deal w/ backlighting bleeding as long as it's minimal and it's not insane yuck....i doubt it will be...will see...

What people don't understand is that EVERY LCD WILL HAVE BACKBLEED. Its just part of the process. But compare a Captivate with SAMOLED side by side with the G2x and you'll quickly notice that the colors on the G2x are much more realistic than the Captivate/SGS and on top of that, SAMOLED integrates a pentile matrix display which essentially cuts the actually visible resolution in half in comparison to the IPS-LCD that the G2x utilizes. I can actually see the pixels on my Captivate - I can NOT see them on my G2x because it uses an LCD. I'm quite happy with my G2x so far - hell my roommate was playing NFS for 2 hours and my battery went down 20% - my Cap can't even run the same APK (I rooted and installed it on the Cap - frame rate was abysmal - everyone says the PowerVR 540 is a better chip than the nVidia but the fact of the matter is that nVidia has a lot of hold in the industry due to their desktop presence and that makes a huge dent in the other chips - nVidia chips are easier to program for and as time goes on (Ice Cream for example), only then will the full power of these chips actually come to light.

Screen flickering???
Ok, as a fellow early adopter, I too have the LCD bleeding problem. However, I'm noticing another problem. I put the screen to "automatic brightness" mode, which causes it to flicker. I understand that different lighting changes the brightness, but not like this. The screen goes light to dark and back again several times in the same light at the same angle. I'm thinking maybe it could be an issue with just my phone. Anyone else?

My Nexus always did this as well. I think this is more a problem with Android and adjusting the brightness too frequently based on small changes in light as opposed to looking for averages over a minute or so.
Luckily CyanogenMod 7 has incorporated several manual adjustments to how often this sensor changes your backlight and it makes a huge difference. Prior to that, I always just used manual backlight adjustment because it is pretty annoying.
I'm not nitpicking.. lol I can't believe people see that and think it is acceptable. you will see that everytime you look at the phone with Android 2.3 or any black bar mod..
I've heard from many that had this issue, and MANY that have zero bleed, so I will be replacing it to see if it is any better.

I would just use manual brightness anyway. Not a lot of people know this but keeping your screen brightness set to automatic will drain your battery faster than running it at full brightness. It's been tested on multiple Android devices.
Also have the bleed issue, has anyone heard if LG or Tmo have acknowledged the problem?

[Q] screen causes neausea

I purchased a Nexus 5 within the past month. I love the ease of use and general setup, and although I selected red online, the phone itself is caution orange - but I quite like it as it's easy to find.
However, the screen makes me incredibly nauseous within minutes of use. I have tried dimming the lights and increasing the font size, but it does not make a difference. The screen itself makes me incredibly sick. After searching online, I learned that others have experienced the same symptoms after using certain Android phones. Why is this happening? I presume it is related to the LCD screen. Thanks...this phone was expensive.
I had the same problem but for me it was mostly after some intense gaming. I guess I just got used to it after a while cause it does not happen anymore. Some times it was so bad I thought I was gonna throw up.
Just wear sun glasses when Flashing and you will be cured!
Hard to say what's going on. My first guess is that it's the refresh rate on the screen.
Screen makes u nauseatic?
Flash makes u celebrity
Maybe its the animal porn you're watching? ?
But seriously, maybe flash a kernel with colour control and change the gamma values?

Are you using any screen protectors?
I have got this before, but that was switching from LCD to Amoled phones. Nexus 5 is LCD so there shouldn't be a problem.
If I use the matte type of screen protectors where colors are distorted, then the screen will actually make me dizzy.
I think it could happen with any phone, though bigger screens probably don't help. From what I can tell its usually caused by the difference between your eyes looking at the screen and your peripheral vision seeing everything around and behind your phone. I know some people who feel nauseous when using any 3"+ screen mobile and moving, so walking or in a vehicle even.
If that's the case you might be able to mitigate the issue by holding the screen closer to your face, but I don't think it's anything Android specific. Certainly not Nexus 5 specific.
It was big news when iOS7 launched. The culprit were the animations. Maybe reducing animations scale to .5x or .25x would help.

Strange blue streak on screen

I've noticed something on my screen that's been there for a few months now; it's now getting annoying (I've just dealt with it until now). The screen hardware has a barely-visible dark blue streak right around the general area of the y/u keys on the stock keyboard when in portrait mode. I can only see it when something dark is on the screen or if my backlight is turned all the way up. I do have a screen protector and case, but it's not those since it's still there when I take both off. It's not a regular shape like a straight line or a rectangle, it's more of a fairly linear blob.
When the phone is sleeping or completely off (black screen but no backlight) I cannot see it. I'd attach pictures but I can't get a shot of it due to the nature of it. It does not show up in screenshots that I view on another device, so I'm guessing it's the hardware somehow.
I know this is fairly vague and it's probably a hardware issue so I'm SOL, but I figured I'd post in case anyone has any ideas. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Flash stock again, if it's the same, it's hardware. Sorry.

Yeah, I ended up calling Play support and they said it's probably a hardware thing. I'm out of warranty so he was going to transfer me to LG support, but he said it'd probably be $75-100 (possibly more) to replace the screen, so I told him I'll just deal with it and didn't bother with LG.
Thank you!
