[Q] Upgrade from Hero to Nexus S a good decision? - General Questions and Answers

I've got a perfectly good HTC Hero CDMA, but I'm currently being tempted to upgrade. As you all know, the Hero is rather dated these days.
In Canada a Nexus S can be had for only 425$, and with the release of the Nexus S 4G on Sprint, the Nexus S seems to still be relevant.
However I'm torn because I know it's just a Galaxy S underneath.
Maybe I should suck it up and wait for a viable dual-core option?
If anyone wants to help me make this decision I'd be very thankful.

a buddy of mine just went from a hero to the nexus s- and he's blown away by the difference. I would maybe wait for the HTC EVO 3D, not necessarily for the 3D, but it will be a killer phone. It'll have the dual core snapdragon in it and will come stock with a 1730mAh battery. I will most probably go from the EVO 4G to the EVO 3D. It's suppose to come out some time this summer- i would hold out for that one!

Y not the lg 3d? but ya i am very impressed of the smooth scrolls and animated ui of the nexus s. Similarities as seen on an apple iphone.

Thanks guys, I'm actually stuck on a Canadian carrier who's bands are the same as AT&T, so the EVO 3D is not an option.
Seeing as the Nexus S is such a darn good deal at 425$, I think I'm gonna go pick one up today. I can always sell it and upgrade if absolutely necessary.
Thanks again guys!

[Q] which sprint 4g phone should i get?

I am torn on the HTC EVO and the HTC EVO SHIFT coming out tomorrow. I know a lot about the 2 (processors, screen size, cameras, price etc). I currently have an epic and its great but I miss htc and I am willing to pay full price for both because I would sell my epic. What do you think I should get? I've owned an evo before and my dad has a tmobile G2. I know that the evo shift is faster even though it has an 800mhz processor compared to the evos 1ghz, but I'm torn.
I would say go with the shift. Newer hardware is always better. Plus imo the screen on the evo is completly washed out while the shifts looks more vivid. Plus a keyboard is always a win=win situation in texting and emulators.. Just my little "rant"
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Go with the Evo, not the Shift. Main reason? The Shift is the baby sibling of the Evo. The onscreen keyboard is awesome (and you should install the Gingerbread keyboard and it'll make it even more awesome)... everything is awesome. If you've had the Evo before, why compromise and go DOWN? If you were coming from something like a BB or a G1, I'd suggest going to the Shift, but you've used an Evo before. Go balls to the wall, man.
Oh, and you can get the Shift at Best Buy or Radio Shack right now.

Will the Nexus S 4G Be Too Little, Too Late?

I'm a Sprint customer up for an upgrade soon. I definitely want to switch out this pitiful Palm Pixi for an Android device. The developer community for Android is just so much more motivated and exciting than the webOS community.
As everyone knows, there are two awesome Android devices coming to Sprint in the next few months. The Nexus S 4G and the HTC EVO 3D. I originally had my heart set on the Nexus S, but then I fell in love with the awesome specs of the EVO 3D.
My main question is, I know that there will still be developers working on the Nexus S in a year, but will I regret getting it over the EVO 3D, being that it has lower specs? Do you think the Nexus S is a better choice?

Hardware wise the Evo 3d is definitely better. I don't think the NS 4g is too late and my reason behind that is because if Google continues rolling out major updates for the NS long before other devices get them then the NS will still remain current regardless of lack of dual core. Software can definitely make an old device feel new.

As for the hardware, look at the Atrix...rubbish. EVO 3D should be a hell of a lot better than that though. I've been wanting to pull the trigger on a G2x but I keep holding off because I have a feeling there are going to be some killer uses of the NFC technology built into the Nexus S. If I'm wrong, I've still "stuck" myself with a truly fantastic device. As for getting updates early, it's not all it's chalked up to be so far with the NS. The one I have was stuck on 2.3.1 and I had to manually upgrade. As far as CM7 goes, the version built for the NS pales in comparison to the version I was running on my G2. Too many bugs and usability problems even with the "stable" release.

So do you think the EVO 3D would be better, based on the next-gen hardware?
Oh it will clearly have better hardware. But for what? There is nothing out there that taxes the Nexus S at this point. It is fast enough.
If you want the 3d or the bigger screen, wait. But don't wait for better performance, there is no point unless you just like running benchmarks all day.

I'm getting the Nexus S because I've always wanted a dev phone. I'm sitting on 3 full upgrades, so I'll get the Evo 3D this summer as well.

Who knows, the Evo 3d might be the better phone. It all depends on what your looking for. What exactly do you want in a phone? Most likely the Evo 3d will have more developers than the NS, but the NS software will always be officially up to date and run more smoothly since the software was built specifically for this device. I think since more dual core, etc phones are coming out GOOGLE will continue to roll out major updates for the NS to prove that software plays a major part in smartphones. I personally don't see why we need a dual core phone if our phone is already fast, but that's just me.

way to troll t-mobile boy! thanks for playing!
I hate 3d and HTC, it is all BS just get a Nexus S, the whole idea that the Qualcom dual core is faster than Tegra 2 is false as well. They boasted that their 1.5ghz dual core processor can run circles around a Tegra 2 clocked at 1ghz. Well... OBVIOUSLY. Plus this is the same Evo just with 3d and a slightly faster processor, HTC is bringing fragmentation to a new level, they have software fragmentation within software fragmentation. A great majority of all of HTC's devices will not receive Sense 3.0. Nexus S wins by the software route, and maybe even the hardware one too, HTC cameras never perform as advertised and their screens are crap a lot of the time. Nexus S 4G may be late, but not too late. I would say it's late when you see a Tegra 2 device on Sprint like the Galaxy S2, it runs circles around the Evo 3D for sure, just Google some benchmarks.

It's my view on the technology this phone will use. I don't see what T-Mobile has to do with it and I'm a man.
This phone will use WiMax, if you're in an area that has it, maybe it will make you happy. My experiences with the Evo and WiMax in NY were negative.
Other than that it's a Nexus S on a CDMA network that will let Sprint customers enjoy the pure Google Android experience without switching carriers. That's great. Choice is great.
I personally wouldn't let WiMax factor into my decision if I was on another carrier looking at sprint.

WiMax does suck, LTE IS TEH FUTURE
Lol... xD in all honesty WiMax might make the Evo 3d heavier, and the 3d might have already made it heavy to begin with, who knows I could be wrong.

the evo3d isnt a big enough advancement for me to ditch my evo for it. if i cant get my hw003 replaced with a 004, ill be buying the nexus s, at retail. no contracts for this guy...or maybe ill get it on a contract...
if the nexus comes SOON, ill jump on it, mostly for the dev aspect and the gpu. if its not coming until first or second week in may, ill wait to handle an evo3d. the evo 3d is physically ugly though, imo and form factor means a lot to me.
i prefer htc to samsung but i may be playing with a ns4g very soon. Now if only I knew WHEN it was coming...cause no public release dates is straight up oscar mayer
For me, the 'getting updates first' perk of the Nexus S is more important than dual-core or 3d. Plus, I'm just sick of the Hero and want a new phone ASAP.

Obviously your a supporter of the tegra 2, you have a xoom. So of course your going to have a biased opinion. You have little knowledge but a whole lot of hate. To the OP, don't listen to this guy, he seriously is not a good source and just wants to troll. That said these phones aren't even out yet so how can such strong opinions (ok mainly thee evo 3d) be postulated?
I'M IN SPAAAACCCEEEE! I'M IN SPACE! I'M IN SPACE!
Nexus-S is a bad ass device, who cares about dual core right now, I would wait until "Ice cream" update is out, for true dual core support, and then get the newest Android phone out at that time, which will probably be a dual core Nexus-3.0 that will be first phone with "Ice Cream" 3.1.
So get the Nexus-S now and have fun. And upgrade to the true dual core phone Nexus-3.0, when it comes out if you want.
Dual.core sounds tempting but im not a game player on my.phone. So for some the nexus s looks to be a great upgrade.

Phone suggestions?

I currently have a iPhone 3GS... was looking to get the next iPhone in June until it got pushed back so in the mean time I'm toying with the idea of trying an Android phone until the next iPhone comes out later this year.
I'm would just buy a used one.
I'm currently on ATT and was looking at the Atrix... it's going for about $400 right now used. Locked bootloader sucks though.
What other phones would you guys suggest?
Looking for a phone that runs extremely smooth and I would like to be able to run Gingerbread.
The Infuse 4G is very intriguing but full retail on that will probably be over my limit...
HTC Inspire?
If you have the budget go for Samsung Galaxy S II. =)
i have the galaxy s1 which is excellent but the desire Z is nice too
I'd go on the Sensation. Looks incredible. If you have the budget, of course.
looks very very good
$400 used is my budget.
Would like Galaxy S2 but I'm not a fully converted android user so it's not worth it to me...
nice those are really good suggestions
Samsung captivate/galaxy s, G2/desire z, Mytouch 4g, desire hd, desire s.
The Samsung captivate is surely near your price range, G2/desire z more than likely you can get a good deal on them. Mytouch 4g I'm not sure. Desire hd and s might be a little pricier but should be near your range. (Note i'm talking used since you said you're looking used)
All of these have can be upgraded to gingerbread, via xda of course.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Im not sure if all these phones are capable for att 3G/4g on the 14.4mbs band capability.
Anyways, still looking but leaning towards the atrix due to specs being future proof and the hopes of gingerbread releasing in 2-3 months. Atrix has better specs than those phones...
However, do those phones run gingerbread smoothly? As smooth as atrix runs 2.2? And how is the battery life on those phones with GB?
Gingerbread just flies as far as speed, and its more battery efficient than froyo for sure.

If you're looking for future proof then the galaxy S2 is probably the best bet at the moment. 21mbps hsdpa speed but not sure if at&t supports that fast

[Q] Best Android Smart Phone for games

Hi all, I just wanted to post a quick question. I'm looking to upgrade from my sad Kyocera Zio M6000 to a top of the line, best in the market, Android smart phone. I thought I was going to get the HTC Thunderbolt until I spoke with my sister who works for Verizon and she said to hold off because it's having issues right now with switching from 3G to 4G. So I wanted to check here and see what you all think right now is the best, top of the line android smart phone out there. The most powerful, can handle -ANY- games out on the market, can record HD video, has 2 way camera, all the bells and whistles and is going to last me liekly years before I even think about getting a new one. I made a mistake getting my Zio and I've been regretting it for 10 months now and I don't want to make that mistake again. I plan to play game son it, watch movies,.. everything on it .. I appreciate all your responses and thank you for your time! REason I posted here is because I want the new phoen to be able to run any app and play any game flawlessly
-Seabhac
WAIT, I must say, when it comes to a phone and games Samsung has the best hardware but horrible software support (updates). As of now, hTc is behind the game. So far they haven't released any phones that even get close to competing with the Galaxy S II. Wait for a better Galaxy S to get on Verizon and GO. The Fascinate just doesn't get the job done either.
Droid Charge? It has literally everything you have mentioned. I personally would choose the Nexus S or HTC Sensation when it comes out. Droid Bionic will also have everything you are asking for and the Atrix 4G also seems pretty future proof.
Atrix is fine but motorola doesn't seem to provide OS-Updates in a serious manner.
I'd head for Nexus S. Strong hardware and probably quiet fast updates to ice cream and beyond.
Nevertheless I love my defy and wouldn't change for a nexus S but I'm not a gamer
Appreciate the answers but let me qualify this a step further,.. I want to replace it in the near future like this week or the next so of the ones out -now- which is the most powerful? I'm starting to think I might have to go iphone 4 but I really would prefer not to go that proprietary! lol

What are everyone's opinions of the HTC Thunderbolt? I keep considering that one as well due to the fact it seems to be the top of the line right now from Verizon.
Try LG Optimus 2X.... Dual-core with Nvidia Tegra!! Should be the most powerful one available in the market for now... gsmarena.com for more info...
Well truthfully it depends on which carrier your going to go with. As of right now T-Mobile has the G2X which is an Nvidia Tegra Dual Core Device and I believe it has Full Root now at least it looked close to it when I checked in on that forum on here a week or so back. Also most Android phones can be overclocked so look through the forums at the newer devices and see what they are doing there and how active it is and that will give you a better idea of what to go for considering the devices that are good and will get updates faster than stock tend to be the one's with the best reputation and like I said updated before stock. I personally have the T-Mobile G2 and the MyTouch 4g both Rooted and Both with Custom Roms and also Both Overclocked and running Gingerbread which is not released for Either phone Officially and I have yet to have issues running any games and don't get much screen delay at all on either of them. The G2X fyi is the American version of the LG Optimus 2X.
Xperia PLay Would be great..you will hav a big screen with PlayStation And Android Support in one device...
Nexus Prime!
just wait for the nexus prime!!!
just a week!!
Optimus 2x
Yes i love my Optimus 2x with Thanatos 4.1 custom overclocked 1400mhz dual-core rom so much that i bielieve it is the best for gaming.....
I have never try anything else xD

What phone should I go with?

I'm getting a upgrade from my x10 to either a HTC evo 3D (unlocked) or a infuse S 4G. (Not sure if Can be unlocked)
I've seen the specs and know what's inside.
I'd like to know of any pros and cons of each before I make my decision.
All knowledge is much appreciated and thanks in advance for any and all help.
Sent from my X10a using XDA Premium App
htc really puts out quality stuff. not to mention that their sense ui is pretty nice
I think a better comparison would be the Evo 3D and the Galaxy S II. The Infuse seems like a giant Galaxy S with a better screen and 4G connectivity.
Maybe you can try GALAXY S II. That is AMOLED Plus screen, really really nice screen and dual-core 1.2GHz processor.Just walk to the phone shop and try it. You would like it.
I think that 3d is still a gimmick (although it's really cool) -- Regardless, the HTC Evo 3d is still really well built.
The Samsung Galaxy S II would be a much better purchase (especially with that great screen and speedy processor).
What phone should i go with?
Thanks for the reply's.
I realize that the Samsung Galaxy S 2 is the phone to go with but rogers doesn't have that for upgrade. it's only on the bell network here in canada which i will not go back to.
So it looks like I may be going with the EVO 3D the specs are the best of any phone that rogers has currently.
If i had the money i would definatly go with the SGS2 but i don't so evo 3d here i come.
I had the Samsung Galaxy S2 recently has a test device. Quite nice gadget but not as good as the EVO 3D. I personally don't need 3D at all, meaning the device runs mainly with 2D.
