[Q] 3G -- add-on or built-in? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm considering whether to get a TF now, or wait until a 3G version comes out.
Based on some specs it seems 3G will be offered as an option, but it's unclear whether the 3G can be a home-installed add-on, a store-installed add-on, something factory installed that can't be retrofitted to a wifi-only system, or (shudder) something only available through carriers.
I'm prepared to wait, but would prefer to buy a wifi-only one now if I had confidence that I could add on the 3G when it became available.
Can anyone shed some light on how the TF will include 3G?
Thanks!

I think that you would have to wait for asus to make one with 3G. I think I remember seeing someone mention sometime in summer for 3G.

I highly doubt 3g will be an add-on.
Do you not have an Android phone?

Why get 3g just use your mobiles connection
sent from my LEE Pad Transformer........I wish

Sure, I could tether to a phone. However I'd like to reduce the amount of gear that I need to carry around, keep charged, etc.

A Mifi unit or something would work well. I keep one in the business card slot of my laptop bag and plan to shift it over to the tablet case once mine is delivered.

Clear Network? Sprint 4G?

Does anyone have the G Tablet working on the Clear Network?
I know Clear is not in all areas yet so let me explain that Clear offers wireless internet and phone service on their 4G network. Here in Vegas we have both Clear 4G and Sprint 4G available. The Clear service is available for about $40.00 per month here and I am curious if this would work.
The Clear device is a USB port modem that would plug into the side of the G Tablet. Does this Clear device work with the G Tablet?
Also, Clear was selling a small hot spot device that can be used in place of a hot spot phone. I am not sure if that is still available. Do you think it would work with the G Tablet over wifi?
Also, does anybody know if the Sprint HTC EVO Hot Spot feature works well with the G Tablet? I think Sprint requires users to purchase their hot spot service and using a Sprint Phone as a theter violates their user agreement.
So, I am opening this up for discussion and not looking to try this right away, just looking for info for now. I hope this leads to a lot of discussion on the topic of wireless internet on the go. What made me wonder about this is I may have to sit in the hospital waiting room for several hours and it might be nice to take the tablet along to pass the time and I am doubtful there will be wifi service at the hospital.
Thanks for any response in advance.
ahhhh... Finally somthing I know a little about. I dont think the Tabs are gears for drivers for the clear cars, HOWEVER - I've had Clear since the day they came out, 2 usb sticks for $55 a month. Last month I upgraded one of the USB modems for the clearspot 4G, monthly service was the same price and now I have wiMax router that I can connect 8 devices to. IT WORKS GREAT. No reason to get a USB moden when you get the router for the same price
Hope that helped some?

Hi it2steve, are you using the G Tablet with the Clearspot? I talked to Clear Sales on the phone and the CSA said he thought the Modems would work with the Android Opp System. He also said that the Hot Spot device (Clearspot?) was either discontinued or was being discontinued. He said it works great for him (but he is one of those "Apple Guys") and he has it working with about 8 devices.
I was wondering the same thing.. Road Runner/Time Warner Cable recently put a similar device. It is said to be a 3G/4G mobile hot spot router. Their service is $39.99 for their local 3/4G service while the national(nationwide) service cost $39.99 for the first 3 months then reverts to $59.99 after that. Currently I have a rooted G1 with barnacle adhoc tether. Max DL is about 1.8 mbs on 3G and max upload speeds of .7 mbs. It is sufficient for browsing websites but not for watching flash ie YouTube(although some videos do play good and quickly). I'm using it ATM at work with max 12kbps DL and like 4kbps upload. Haha!
Hi,
HTC EVO4G hotspot works well with gtab. If you root your EVO you can either use wifi tether or with some roms use hotspot feature without having to pay the carrier any additional fees

Sprint is re-selling Clear's 4G service. I have a Sprint Overdrive 4G Mifi hotspot. Actually using it now because the cable modem in the house went dead. 5 devices can connect and use the hotspot at once. It's awesome.
Let me warn you. No one that I am aware of has been able to get any USB air card to work on a G-tablet yet. I know some devs are trying to get it to work, but if you want mobile internet on the G-tablet, you need to get a mifi or hotspot device.

Ok... I don't know anything about a recall. I do, however, know first hand which services that I have had with them the last year and a half:
- I started with two USB Clear 4G modems (NOT 4G+ which is 3 and 4G)
- 8 months ago I got the original 'ClearSpot Router' (which was an actual router, made my cradle point branded by Clear that a usb stick went into and broadcast the signal like any other router.
-45 days ago I upgraded one of my USB sticks to (now what they call) Clearspot 4G (not 4G+) as it's basically the same as the first one except it's all built into one unit. You set it up like you would any router, user / pass / SSID / encryption / ect.
It works flawlessly on my tab, laptop, Wii and even cell when I need it. As a backup I tether my Tab off of my Vibrant too.
Hope this helps some. I've included two pics, one of the first Clearspot with USB and one of the 'new' Clearspot where the USB is no longer needed (by the way, for the price and what you get the Clearspot makes it a no-brainer compared to a USB)
I have the 4G Clear Spot portable WiFi router (second picture above) and it works fine with the G tablet as with any other WiFi device. You can connect up to 5 devices at a time The WiFi signal is 802.11b/g.

[Q] 3g modual

can a 3g modual be used on the g tab. if so which ones work thanks all for help
How about...?
Hopefully this isn't too off-topic but why don't you just use the 3G connection from your phone (I assume you have an android phone)? That is what a lot of folks with the gTab do now.
I have a rooted Droid X phone that I've installed Wireless Tether on and since I have an unlimited data account with Verizon I turn my phone into a 3G hotspot and connect my gTab to it to surf when I'm out and about. This works great for me since I always have my phone with me.
Anyway, hopefully this info helps as I do not know of a way to add a 3G module to the gTab. Some folks have been discussing using a 3G or 4G usb dongle modem but I don't think they've been able to get that to work yet.
Good luck,
Steve

Absolutely agree!
I was in the quest of finding 3G module for my tab, preferably GSM, not CDMA (Werizon).
Later on I started counting and something dawned on me....LOL
If I install that module on G-Tab.... I have to pay for the access...
Since I already paying for my phone data plan, it would be a double whammy..
I have HD2 running WinMo 6.5 and WMWiFiRouter, which is the great program to tether to G-Tab.
Hope it helps.

[Q] Thoughts about a 3G TF

OK I know that the Asus TF with 3G is not currently available in most parts of the world (it does seem to be available in Italy, Taiwan and China).
I spoke to Asus Canada on Aug 16th, 2011 asking about a possible ETA, not much info but from how the rep responded to my question I think we are getting pretty close (like by mid Sept).
So here's a couple questions that maybe the gurus that lounge in here can somewhat address.
We've seen that subsidized devices (ie cell phone's) running Android have been slow at getting updates on Android. The carriers control that upgrade path to insure compatibility with their network. Some it seem could care less about the users level of satisfaction with a particular device preferring that they purchase a new model to gain the features of a software revision.
I own a TF101, it's been a great product, but I'd much prefer a TF101G. (Thankfully I have someone that will buy the TF for full price if I move to the 3G model). With the original TF we've seen Asus leading over others in pushing down updates. But I'm wondering if we are likely to see the same level of support with a 3G model?
Another question I have is that here in Canada currently the only data plan available from the carriers is a 500MB one for $30-32/month. Bell, Telus and Rogers do offer an IPad plan for $15 - 250MB. Now with time I expect that those 3 will offer more tablet plans, but what I'm wondering is could I just buy the Ipad plan and use it with a TF101G or Rocket Stick. I mean sure neither is an "Ipad" but data is data and it shouldn't matter. The only thing I can think of is that the Piad sends some form of a device identifier to the network, but I would think this could somehow be set?????
On support, my guess is that Asus will be more aggressive in pushing updates than any other vendor. Getting them out early is their "style". So while there may be some delays caused by 3G, Asus will probably resolve those quickly and ship the 3G update shortly after the Wifi only update.
As an aside, have you considered tethering to your phone? I have no interest in a 3G tablet of any sort. I use my phone's wifi hotspot to tether to tablets (TF, iPad, NC) and laptops. It works great and I always have the phone with me. Also, our area has good 4G coverage (Sprint) so the speed is good. Also, sharing the bandwidth between multiple device makes any charges more palatable.
I do an insane amount of tethering, so a 3G tablet seems cool, but unnecessary to me. I find it weird that the TF101 has a portable hotspot feature, along with USB tethering. But I guess in hindsight it makes sense for the tablets that do have 3G connectivity (a la Xoom).
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
+1, if you have an Android or iOS smartphone, I see no reason whatsoever to get a 3G/4G tablet. Why pay for another data plan?
I personally tether to my iPhone 4.
currently I have no data plan or for that matter a smart phone, so tethering is not an option, I'm not sure how such devices are priced elsewhere but here in Canada I doubt one could get a phone/plan for under $70 a month. That's considerably more then the under $20 that is available on that 'other' device. Sure it's a small amount of data, but most places that I'd use a tablet have wifi, simply having a 3G for the odd time away from an 802.11 connection would be welcomed

TF700 on Verizon 4G LTE ?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but can one buy a Verizon USB stick and then have cell data service on the tablet?

It is not a stupid question. But... If you have a VZW LTE device and you have the share everything plan, you do not need the device since you will save a lot of money if you simply tether using wifi share under you share plan (which does not cost more). If you do not have a share everything plan, you can still save a lot of money of you download fox-fi for free and use it with your unlimited plan (Notice: this violates the VZW contract) or pay $15 a month for the right to tether. Either way, you save money by not having to purchase a USB device and paying the monthly line fee.
Hope this helps.

That is a good alternative, but it includes paying for a cell phone or Teather device, its contract with Verizon, and keeping it charged.
I think the TF700 has a USB port. But does the Verizon stick require Windows? Will it even work on android?
perhaps nobody has been trying to do this.
thanks,
Howard

It does have a USB port, but I do not think 1) it can power the modem, 2) it supports the drivers of the USB modem, and 3) there is an app that talks to the modem. Short answer is, highly unlikely that it will work.

That is disappointing, because a tablet with cellular data service, plus Bluetooth, plus Skype or Google voice could be a do everything device. it would also be cell company independent if one can always switch USB stick to another cell phone company.
Perhaps a windows 7 tablet is what is needed for this scenario? I'd prefer Android.

I have a feeling that most people that have a Transformer, also have some sort of cell phone. I think that most people just prefer to tether if needed, which is probably why this is not something that is available (yet, at least)...
I could be wrong, but I woulnd't think there wouldn't be much demand for this type of setup...

While you may be right, the battery of the device providing the tethering does suffer from battery drain, so an internal 4G LTE modem would be nice to have, but it appears that you are right about the popularity of such a feature. I believe I read that the XOOM WIFI outsold the XOOM that came out first with VZW due to the lower price. I had the VZW XOOM, but to be honest, I usually used it on Wifi, hardly ever using the built in 3G/LTE, I understand why people would want to have a USB modem so that they could use any Cellular carrier regardless of the device they want to buy.
Archos tablets have an optional USB stick for 3G GSM cellular connectivity.
However it is for european use only.

So, this exists for some tablets in some countries.

I want it for the CPU. I dont care for the Tegra 3.
Dump the USB stick and get the Verizon 4G LTE Mifi device, it allows the connection up to 5 mobile devices and doesn't have the quirks and limitations that a USB air card have which primarily drivers and connection limitation.
I used one for my Prime in the past, I haven't tried it on my new Infinity yet, but I'm 100% certain it will work as all the Mifi does is create a 4G LTE hotspot that any wifi enabled device with WPA2 support can connect to.

I agree with this approach -- if you really want connectivity away from a wifi source I see this as far better way to go -- you can carry the VZW Jetpack in your pocket and it's good for a number of hours, usually long enough to bridge between wifi connections -- it also can be powered by AC if near a power outlet. The down side, of course, is the need to have an additional data plan.

Actually, there is no additional data plan required if you have the share plan. And whatever the cost, it would be the same for the USB as the MiFi, but the MiFi can drive more than one device at the same time.
Are you really concerned with the possibility of changing carriers? If so, what is the area in which this would be used in? Verizon uses CDMA for their 4G and though CDMA is a better technology, it is only available in North America (thus, less carriers and use space). If you have any plans of using this setup outside the US, you'd be much better off with GSM which is now coming into the 4G level but can be used world-wide. I have a ZTE MF60 which I used in Europe to get 3G mobile data on everything - 2 laptops, 2 tablets and a phone. The mobile wifi hotspots definately are worth the annoyance of carrying around an extra device. Haven't tried it yet, but one could possibly use the keyboard dock USB to charge the hotspot and provide access to other devices. So, you basically have 2 choices ahead of you: Technology type (based off of region of access) and How you want to use it (plug into only one device or a hotspot for everything).

If I'm not mistaken, Verizons 4G technology is actually not based on CDMA. Verizon 4G phones inherently have GSM capabilities (if the kernel and ROM support it) because it essentially uses a GSM antenna. They also have CDMA radios as well, to support Verizons 3G network.
Correct me if I am wrong.

The only thing that might pose an issue is that the LTE frequencies that VZW uses are not the same world-wide, so while the GSM side should work, LTE speeds might be difficult to achieve outside the US.

Seems I stand corrected. The 4G LTE is based off GSM, so at least that would work in GSM areas (though perhaps not at 4G speeds). Phone communication still uses CDMA unless its a dual phone that can use GSM or CDMA. GSM functionality is not natively inherent to Verizon's phone nor CDMA. If you want to test it here in the states, move from Verizon to AT&T or T-mobile. If it works that way then it will work in a GSM environment.
Why Verizon 4G LTE smartphones are a bad choice for world travelers

Well, now that's cool about the RAZR... might have to read up on that 'un.
But what I meant is that one needs to find a specific functionality that allows for such roaming. Buying Verizon does not automatically get GSM nor does having CDMA automatically work worldwide. One needs to find a device where it is specifically mentioned, such as that RAZR you indicated.

[Q] Samsung Note 10.1 N8100 or USA Samsung Note 10.1

I was just about to place order on Amazon for the Samsung Note 10.1 32gb but then came across the unlocked version of the 10.1 16gb. My question is which one to get? I like that the unlocked version is 3g wifi but the American version isnt. Are these 2 tablets similar in specs aside from the 3G?
Any suggestions would be helpful. I want to buy it like tomorrow.

Aside from 3G, they're more or less identical specs wise. Of course the WiFi version hasn't gotten JB yet, so maybe that is a consideration for you.

Wait but the 3G version is dual core and the external memory slot only can only extend to 32 GB? Isnt the American version quad core and can be extended to 64gb?
I am currently with AT&T, is the 3G version compatible for me to subscribe to their data plan? I also have an Ipad 3 and is it possible for me to switch the sim card to this tablet?
What is JB? How much difference does it make compared to the WiFi version?

Huh? There are five Note 10.1's:
1) N8000 - International 3G with quad-band HSPA and a dialer and MMS function that basically make it a giant phone.
2) N8005 - A 3G model sold in Turkey with the dialer disabled.
3) N8010 - International Wi-Fi version.
4) N8013 - North American Wi-Fi version.
5) N8020 - An N8000 with an LTE radio.
Other than the 3G/LTE radios all five are physically identical and storage can be either 16/32/64GB based on the model.
There are a few of us using it on AT&T. You can add the 3G version to your plan as either a tablet or a phone. If you pick tablet the phone and MMS features won’t work. Since its IMEI isn't in AT&T's database you can also add it to your plan as a non-smartphone and get unlimited data for $10 a month (plus $9.99 a month for the additional line). You'll need to get the IMEI off of a non-smartphone to give to AT&T when you set up service. Buy a cheap GoPhone at Walmart and use its IMEI. Or write the floor model’s down.

Are they both essentially the same in specs aside from 3G? Which would you recommend purchasing?

They're both the same specs wise. The difference between the N8000 and other wireless-capable tablets is that it's a full-fledged phone.
I had a Wi-Fi only tablet for about 30 days a year ago and swapped it for 3G. Here are some benefits:
To me, being able to whip the tablet out anywhere and use it instantly is a big plus. At airports, restaurants, coffee shops, and hotel lobbies you don't know if there's Wi-Fi available or not and have to spend time checking. If it is available you have to figure out how to connect to it. Tethering's an option but is a pain in the ass. Get out phone, turn on Wi-Fi, connect tablet, disconnect tablet, turn off phone Wi-FI. Forget the last step and you phone's battery is toast. It's toast anyway from acting as a hot spot for any length of time. Having a tablet with 3G and a huge battery lets you be online to your heart’s content. Tethered to a phone you'll only last as long as the phone's battery. The only upside to tethering is better data speeds if you’re connecting to an LTE phone. My HSPA+ speeds on AT&T are about 5-6MB on average and fine for streaming Netflix, YouTube, and the like. My phone's on a HSPA $10 data plan also.
If you have lots of syncs set up connecting to Wi-Fi after the tablet's been offline can take several minutes before it's fully usable because all of the background processes slow it down. With it always connected its usable instantly and all your syncs are up to date as soon as you turn it on.
Because the Note's a phone I use it for long conference calls rather than draining my phone's battery. I also replicate everything on both devices so if I want to respond to a short e-mail I'll use the phone. For longer e-mails or where I need to add attachments I'll use the tablet. A good example is at an airport gate area. I can be online with the Note and if boarding's called I just stuff it in my briefcase.
To me, the $20 a month to AT&T is worth the freedom. Also, AT&T's dramatically lowered the price of their international data packages. I buy one for my Note when I'm traveling and it's great for looking stuff up, navigation, editing pics to send home, etc. How much any of this applies to you or anyone else here is all a matter of personal preference.

The N8000 only comes in 16bg right? Is there a 32gig out there? I mean 16 gig difference is alot? Is this tablet flash compatible? I want to watch some movies and the app/website requires flash.
I dont do much sync, I like that it has phone capability and I can use international data when I travel. I use it mostly for games, reading and movie watching. Currently I have Samsung Note phone and I love it! I also use my ipad 3.
Just a quick response to the second post. I've also seen on a few sites like Amazon and Walmart where they list some of the 32gb notes as being dual core and some as having only 1gb of ram. I'm sure it's a mistake of the website. Just wanted to share what I read.

Small amendment..
1) N8000 - International 3G with quad-band HSPA and a dialer and MMS function that basically make it a giant phone.
2) N8005 - A 3G model sold in Turkey with the dialer disabled.
3) N8010 - International Wi-Fi version including Canada
4) N8013 - US Wi-Fi version.
5) N8020 - An N8000 with an LTE radio.
The US is *not* North America. There are three countries in North America: Canada, United States and Mexico. As far as I know, the 8013 is US only. Canada gets the 8010. I'm not sure which one Mexico gets, probably the 8010 as well.

What's all these hostility in here?
I already have Ipad and just bought a 10.1 N8000 arriving tmw. You people have issues, I feel sorry for your life.
Merry Christmas!
It's not hostility, just sarcasm. And you deserve it. You already got an answer about flash but you chose to ignore it. And you keep using quote from the most recent post, a bad habit that ruins most topics.
Happy holidays.

I didnt see the post and you are too quick to give your assumptions by being sarcastic. What do you mean I deserve it? Who the heck are you to tell say that you bum. You coulda said something like someone already posted. but I guess you rather use sarcasm than being helpful. dude if I read it, why I would repost the question again? that's common sense for a normal person.
Get on with your woeful sarcasm life.
Relax "dude". Don't get mad, I'm the one with the issues...
Common sense will be not to quote the last post, to edit and correct your topic title, or to post in the correct section of the forum, but who am I to educate you.
My intention was not to offend you, I apologize if I did.
