Clear Network? Sprint 4G? - G Tablet General

Does anyone have the G Tablet working on the Clear Network?
I know Clear is not in all areas yet so let me explain that Clear offers wireless internet and phone service on their 4G network. Here in Vegas we have both Clear 4G and Sprint 4G available. The Clear service is available for about $40.00 per month here and I am curious if this would work.
The Clear device is a USB port modem that would plug into the side of the G Tablet. Does this Clear device work with the G Tablet?
Also, Clear was selling a small hot spot device that can be used in place of a hot spot phone. I am not sure if that is still available. Do you think it would work with the G Tablet over wifi?
Also, does anybody know if the Sprint HTC EVO Hot Spot feature works well with the G Tablet? I think Sprint requires users to purchase their hot spot service and using a Sprint Phone as a theter violates their user agreement.
So, I am opening this up for discussion and not looking to try this right away, just looking for info for now. I hope this leads to a lot of discussion on the topic of wireless internet on the go. What made me wonder about this is I may have to sit in the hospital waiting room for several hours and it might be nice to take the tablet along to pass the time and I am doubtful there will be wifi service at the hospital.
Thanks for any response in advance.

ahhhh... Finally somthing I know a little about. I dont think the Tabs are gears for drivers for the clear cars, HOWEVER - I've had Clear since the day they came out, 2 usb sticks for $55 a month. Last month I upgraded one of the USB modems for the clearspot 4G, monthly service was the same price and now I have wiMax router that I can connect 8 devices to. IT WORKS GREAT. No reason to get a USB moden when you get the router for the same price
Hope that helped some?

Hi it2steve, are you using the G Tablet with the Clearspot? I talked to Clear Sales on the phone and the CSA said he thought the Modems would work with the Android Opp System. He also said that the Hot Spot device (Clearspot?) was either discontinued or was being discontinued. He said it works great for him (but he is one of those "Apple Guys") and he has it working with about 8 devices.

I was wondering the same thing.. Road Runner/Time Warner Cable recently put a similar device. It is said to be a 3G/4G mobile hot spot router. Their service is $39.99 for their local 3/4G service while the national(nationwide) service cost $39.99 for the first 3 months then reverts to $59.99 after that. Currently I have a rooted G1 with barnacle adhoc tether. Max DL is about 1.8 mbs on 3G and max upload speeds of .7 mbs. It is sufficient for browsing websites but not for watching flash ie YouTube(although some videos do play good and quickly). I'm using it ATM at work with max 12kbps DL and like 4kbps upload. Haha!

Hi,
HTC EVO4G hotspot works well with gtab. If you root your EVO you can either use wifi tether or with some roms use hotspot feature without having to pay the carrier any additional fees

I can second that. I use my G Tab with my rooted evo4G and wifitether and it works great!

Sprint is re-selling Clear's 4G service. I have a Sprint Overdrive 4G Mifi hotspot. Actually using it now because the cable modem in the house went dead. 5 devices can connect and use the hotspot at once. It's awesome.
Let me warn you. No one that I am aware of has been able to get any USB air card to work on a G-tablet yet. I know some devs are trying to get it to work, but if you want mobile internet on the G-tablet, you need to get a mifi or hotspot device.

Ok... I don't know anything about a recall. I do, however, know first hand which services that I have had with them the last year and a half:
- I started with two USB Clear 4G modems (NOT 4G+ which is 3 and 4G)
- 8 months ago I got the original 'ClearSpot Router' (which was an actual router, made my cradle point branded by Clear that a usb stick went into and broadcast the signal like any other router.
-45 days ago I upgraded one of my USB sticks to (now what they call) Clearspot 4G (not 4G+) as it's basically the same as the first one except it's all built into one unit. You set it up like you would any router, user / pass / SSID / encryption / ect.
It works flawlessly on my tab, laptop, Wii and even cell when I need it. As a backup I tether my Tab off of my Vibrant too.
Hope this helps some. I've included two pics, one of the first Clearspot with USB and one of the 'new' Clearspot where the USB is no longer needed (by the way, for the price and what you get the Clearspot makes it a no-brainer compared to a USB)

I have the 4G Clear Spot portable WiFi router (second picture above) and it works fine with the G tablet as with any other WiFi device. You can connect up to 5 devices at a time The WiFi signal is 802.11b/g.

[Q] 3g modual

can a 3g modual be used on the g tab. if so which ones work thanks all for help
How about...?
Hopefully this isn't too off-topic but why don't you just use the 3G connection from your phone (I assume you have an android phone)? That is what a lot of folks with the gTab do now.
I have a rooted Droid X phone that I've installed Wireless Tether on and since I have an unlimited data account with Verizon I turn my phone into a 3G hotspot and connect my gTab to it to surf when I'm out and about. This works great for me since I always have my phone with me.
Anyway, hopefully this info helps as I do not know of a way to add a 3G module to the gTab. Some folks have been discussing using a 3G or 4G usb dongle modem but I don't think they've been able to get that to work yet.
Good luck,
Steve

Absolutely agree!
I was in the quest of finding 3G module for my tab, preferably GSM, not CDMA (Werizon).
Later on I started counting and something dawned on me....LOL
If I install that module on G-Tab.... I have to pay for the access...
Since I already paying for my phone data plan, it would be a double whammy..
I have HD2 running WinMo 6.5 and WMWiFiRouter, which is the great program to tether to G-Tab.
Hope it helps.

Wifi Tether/Wireless Tether for Root Users

The only version of wifi/wireless tether for root users that works is the most recent experimental build:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
wifi_tether_v3_0-pre14.apk
From the options menu, you will need to change the device from auto to Samsung Facinate.
This is the only configuration that worked for me. The stability is questionable. I did have to reboot a few times to get wifi working AFTER I turned off wifi-tether.
It did seem to help that I kept wifi on before I started wifi-tether. I don't suggest turning off wifi, then running wifi-tether. Under this scenario, I could not get wifi-tether to work.
YES, I understand I can use the free official version that's built into the phone, BUT I have no intention of seeing a line item of $20 on my wireless bill AFTER the promotion ends next month. VZW might/will just assume you used it once and you got the service until you call to cancel. No thanks with that situation. Going to avoid that like the plague. I would not put it past VZW [insert any phone/cable/cell company] from this dirty little trick.
I have even considered calling VZW to have the promo code taken OFF my account. I just don't trust these companies.
On a side not, I am running ED2 with the voodoov4 kernel.
This method can use the 4G LTE connection for the tethering, right?
I did not do a speed test on the other device, but I am pretty certain it said 4G. I actually would have noticed if it was 3G or 1X because it would have stuck out as my house is covered in 4G love

I'm having a hard time getting this to work with altered beast. Has anyone else found a solution for altered beast wireless tether?
I have this app from my Fascinate and I'm posting this right now on my laptop that is being tethered from 4G from this app. That should clear things up.
I got it working. As a matter of fact, I am tethering at about twice as fast as my previous phone.
I live on a farm where our 3G is spotty, and I'm getting 1.5 Mbps as opposed to 0.6 Mbps previously. I can actually stream stuff now! Very happy.
Try Wired Tethering instead
I can't say much about Wireless Tethering, 'cause I'm really not that interested in it: The battery on the Charge gets drained so fast when downloading 4G data without the WiFi stuff, why add an additional drain?
My philosophy on this is that you're probably going to want to plug your Sammy into something to charge the battery while surfing, so why not plug it into your laptop and go with a Wired Tether instead? It probably will get you faster speeds, to boot.
If you want to try it, I recommend "Easy Tether". (The free Google Code root user "Wired Tether" isn't working right now).
E.T. is a lot cheaper than PDAnet, and personally I think it has a simpler user interface. It doesn't require root access, either. The free version gets you unlimited access to http: sites, but restricts https: sites.
Food for thought.
I use Wireless Tethering 2.0.8, not 3.0.
Been using it since I picked up the phone and rooted it. 2.0.8 works perfectly for me. Ad-hoc not Wireless signal, but still works!
I download a 3gb HD movie in about 15-30 minutes, depending on the speed. That's gotta be LTE 4G speed. I'm pretty sure 1.5mbps cannot download 3gb in that time.
i ran wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre9 on my alteredbeast last night and it worked fine for me. not in a 4g area.
The wireless tether option is the only reason to root in my opinion. Plus its free! When I work overtime details where I just have to sit in the cruiser, wireless tether is the best cause I can watch movies and surf any sites without the city's server blocking me.
I've got a couple rooted Charges..anyone know what wireless tether is the BEST? I know of Barnacle and Wireless Tether...and have used both, neither stands out above or any different really than the other.
I am using barnacle and it is working very well no FCs or issues so far.. just stated a few days ago but i am getting full speed.
my guess is that at some point they will be charging by the usage to stop this practice.. but until then this works great.

Isnt verizon plan on suspending accounts that use 3rd party apps to enable tethiering?
I used to use 46GB of data a month with my imagio and nobody ever said a word, and im already up to 16 with the charge (unfortunately still on 3G). If they are supposedely suspending accounts they would have tore me apart by now. I think once 4G gets established nationwide the carriers are probably gonna change there rates on data, but until then im going to keep paying my 30 a month for UNLIMITED data and use as much as i want

Can anyone report if this is working in infrastructure mode, or is it just ad-hoc?

OK like most of you who are just about FEDUP with trying to get your microcell device to work properly with your 4G devices.
I found a fix that not only works like a charm...but delivers text FASTER & at 4G speeds via MICROCELL.
I am using a SAMSUNG INFUSE and prior to the below. Nearly 1 out of every 4 text messages failed.
First let be known the MICROCELL does not like MOTOROLA cable modems. For some reason it stalls, ATT is aware of this. DOCSIS 3.0 modems is where the problem stems.
THE FIX ---
CONVERT YOUR MICROCELL TO A WIRELESS MICROCELL
NETGEAR UNIVERSAL WIRELESS ADAPTER WNCE2001
When hooked directly into this adapter, it handshakes a CLEAN and proper wifi signal.
NOT only does the MICROCELL connect faster, but it sends and receives faster!
OR you can also use the NETGEAR ADAPETR as a WIFI bridge to hook into another router...
in which then you can hook your MICROCELL into the router. That is how I have it hooked up.
I can asure you this will solve all your problems, your FIVE BARS will stay on ALL the time.
The above spoofs the microcell thinking its communicating with anoher device and not the MOTO MODEM.
in 72 HOURS, i have yet to get ONE drop, or ONE lost SIGNAL. I have an unlimited DATA plan and have already watched various NETFLIX streaming movies and crystal clear. SMS messaging is BLAZING FAST!
ALSO....another secret.
CANT GET A IP ADDRESS CONNECTION....OR AWAITING TOO LONG WHEN RESETTING THE MICROCELL.
Speed it up. Have your MICROCELL connected and do a bunch of speedtests at
speedtest____
as this will ignite the MICROCELL to forcefully find an IP address.
This always works for me.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
HOPE THIS HELPS.
....
I have been pulling my hair out with my clients Microcell and ATT Microcell support is the worst I have ever encountered. He has a Microcell in CT and one in SC and the SC device seems to work no problem. But I am on the second MC in CT and it works only intermittently when connecting devices to it. I have to turn my Infuse off then on before I can get a connection to it and it never notifies me on the Infuse that it is connected I only know because I get five bars when I turn the phone back on and normally I only get one bar. His wife's IPhone does notify of Tue MCell connection and I have yet to get his Blackberry Bold 9700 to connect. His BB connects to the SC MCell but not to the CT one. I may try this hack to see if it performs better. Thanks for the heads up.

you know you risk getting throttled if using to much data on an unlimited plan in the comming months right? im just curious as to what your reasoning would be to not use wifi if avilable, think about it when using data on the mcell your just billing your account for essentially using wifi. with your data plan, while unlimited, att has stated they will start throttling the top 5% of data users on the unlimited plan.

Actually I did check a few days ago for as I have been using this method for quite some time (since Feb on wireless) and ATT have no problems with any of the bandwidth. unlimited is unlimited unless i am draining the pool (so to say) hardcore. They havent said one thing.
Now mind you I really dont watch NETFLIX all that often... ;
But i did let a few movies run through purposely on my infuse just to see how strong this connection would stay and or hold.
Shockingly....it was the most stable I hgave ever seen the Microcell behave.
I figure this..Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands cuz we all know ATT aint coming to the table...
Dual Band adapter
I have found a newer version of the Netgear universal adapter (Model WNCE3001) that supports dual bands. I have a dual band router at home and would like to try the Microcell using the 5GHz band of my router. Has anyone tried this or can you confirm that the WNCE3001 will work just like the single band WNCE2001 mentioned in the OP???
Not working for me
I thought I had struck gold when I found this thread, but I was still a little skeptical. I immediately ordered a Netgear adapter. I received it yesterday and installed it without a hitch. Unfortunately, I have the same problems I did when it was wired directly into my DLINK DIR-655 router with Motorola SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0 modem. Even though it shows full bars, the actual data connection seems to drop out. If I don't use the phone for a while, I cannot get an internet connection without turning flight mode on and off, or rebooting the phone. I also have the intermittent issue where sometimes and SMS goes right through, but other, it fails 3-4 times before it will send. This exactly how the microcell behaved when hardwired into the router. I even got a replacement Microcell a week ago, which seems to require fewer reboots to work consistently.
I don't know if it worked for anyone else, or if there's some other secret configuration trick, but I've had no change in performance. I'm running Emanciapation ROM if that helps any. I have no issues at work, where I have 4-5 bars of signal without a microcell, so I'm pretty sure its not the phone/ROM combination.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Not to bring up a dead horse here, but I have this issue that is AWFUL. we are on teh seam between 3g and edge. I get good edge bars, but minimal 3g. we got a microcell and it works WONDERFULLY for my captivate but on the infuse, it fails more texts than it sends. I dont have a motorola router. I have comcast cable modem with a netgear wireless router. I get the issue when the router is bypassed or not. SUCKS!. anyone know if another fix or has tried this with Comcast and it worked?
Sorry pickupman66, the only solution is to get another phone. From all the research I've done on the web, it appears that the Infuse requires a data connection to send SMS...and for some reason, the Mcell either blocks the ports required or doesn't have them so SMS can never go through consistently. I usually had to disconnect from Wifi to get the SMS to send. Very weird. But I fixed the problem by getting an unlocked Galaxy Nexus. It works perfectly with the microcell that never worked well with the Infuse. I can send and receive texts and data just like I was on a normal tower.
Alas. I may have it! First deleted all apn settings and then followed those in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1791526
Go down to the 9-15 update and do that too.
This worked to send and receive MMS and SMS. But service was terrible. No bars when my sg3 had at least two in my other hand. Soooooo. Modem time. Went here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342978
And downloaded 4 modems. One was the sgs UVKJ6. Bars were comparable to my sg3. My sg3 works on the microcell at work. Lets try that here at home. I fired up the microcell, it rebooted once (maybe a software update) and when it came back. I blitzed my phone. Sent 10 texts back to back with no fails. Sent and rcvd 2 MMS images. All went thru. No fails.
That modem is below.

Help with 3g Microcell
Had TWC modem, have Samsung Galaxy 4g and black AT& T Microcell. Dropped calls for one year. ( only cell, no land line)
Back & forth with ATT and Time Warner- in the end got new microcell and new TWC modem. No Improvement. Was told Microcell was not compatible with TWC 1670 Arris Modem. Purchased Netgear C3700 modem, paid guru to hook all that back up, totally out $200on new equipment, still dropped calls. AT&T is no help. This house has radiant barrier in the attic which is probably the original cause, but hoped all this equipment would get me back up and running as I work from home. Does this "FIX" apply to my situation.?

What's better?... P6200, P6210, or P6201-N

Just thought I would make a topic to see which one of the GT7+ models are better. what's everyone opinion about all the models. wifi only v.s 3g.. Having an IR blaster v.s not having one.
I have the P6210
1- I like having the option of having the IR but what's the point? There is not really any apps out there that work with it, plus the app that comes with the tab doesn't work on older TVs so I never use it.
2- Since the one I have is wifi only after having it for a few months now I wish I had the 3g version. I bought the 7 inch for portability but once I leave my house it becomes an oversized gaming device, since there's not much I can do without internet connection. so I end up tethering it to my phone which kills the battery extremely fast.
so what's your opinion?

I personally think that connectivity is the key of all these devices. Wifi only just does not make any sense to me. 3G all the way...

I second this.. I always have my phone around if I need to tether the tab. The additional cost of the device paired with the data plan is not worth it
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
I was thinking about that, meaning tethering to a phone... Not everyone can tether to there phone some people have older phones that don't support tethering... plus you can't tether unless your phone is rooted (which mine is of course) without getting a really big phone bill, as far as I know but I could be wrong. Wifi only its not to bad, I guess I can carry around a cell phone charger (since tethering kills my battery) rather than paying a extra data charge

Same here in Honduras, 30 $ a month unlimited 3G , and I use my P6200 as my primary and only phone
WiFi or 3G
The WiFi or 3G argument depends on how you intend to use your tab. I bought the WiFi only tab because I honestly have no use for 3G on my tab. It would just be another bill. I pretty much only use my tab where I have access to WiFi as it is though. I had bought it because I was getting tired of dragging my laptop into meetings or around the office for various reasons. We have full WiFi coverage everywhere at work so the tab comes in handy for quick checking of my mail or my calendar and it is perfect for taking notes and such in meetings. When I go home, the tab comes home with me and once at home I connect it to my WiFi. If I am out and about town and need to check my e-mail or checkout something on the Internet I just use my smartphone and usually do not have my tab with me anyway when doing things out and about. About the only other time I bring my tab with me is if I am headed over to a friends for awhile. All of my friends have WiFi so WiFi only is still not an issue. So as you can see, at least in my case 3G would just be a needless and unwanted monthly bill.

May I ask how much you paid for your Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus?
I personally think 3G on tablets is a waste of money (keyword: personally). I'm never going to pull out my 7" tablet in the middle of the street to check something when I also have a smartphone. And if I'm sitting down somewhere, most likely there'll be Wifi.

[Q] which phone to use for household broadband (t-mobile)

Hi everybody. I need to use a phone as an access point for broadband in my home. Long story short there are no other options available. What I was doing before was using a rooted thunderbolt on verizon and a grandfathered unlimited data plan, then used a wifi bridge to hook it up to my router and it worked great,
Now I need to replicate this on t-mobile by-passing their damn hot spot limit. I've already rooted my HTC one and tried doing this with that but I cannot get anything to successfully connect to it, and i'm reading that the mode was removed in version 4.2 or something to that effect..
So which t-mobile phone would be the best to root and use in this situation if it can be done? Preferably an LTE handset since I just barely get it but if not oh well, H+ works better most of the time.
Thanks a lot

If I were in your situation, I would install openwrt on the router and hook a USB HSPA+ or LTE dongle to it. IMO, that's a much better and cheaper solution than using a dedicated smartphone.
i agree with troolie's recommendation....
