[Q] What are your major issues? Sending to an Asus tech - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, I've been talking to Hai one of the techs at Asus US for the transformer. He knows I'm on xda a lot and thought I could be a huge resource for him to discover the most common issues people are having with their transformers. He knows a lot of us are power users and wants to help out xda'era as much as he can. So reply to this thread with any issues you are having and I will report back to him the most common of the issues. I also *****ed about how little their call center knew. My initial email to him actually spurred a meeting internally on how they can better train the techs in the call center (which he told me is in Jamaica)
Thanks

I just gave you a thanks for helping to promote & solidify Asus's relationship with this community! If Asus can keep this behavior up, their products will continue to fly off the shelves, such personal support is unheard of it seems in an android world where cell phone & now tablet owners wait forever for updates and help.

screen flickering when playing via HDMI out,
resolution only 720 p.

My issues
1) The speakers and sound playback on this device is lousy. The right speaker is louder than the left. The overall music playback is of low fidelity and low volume.
2) Touch screen doesn't register clicks religiously. I can reproduce this on any damn browser, on the XDA forum home page consistently.
3) Asus keyboard is very very slow. Instantly switched to the Android one
4) Browsing and multi touch is not smooth on the default browser. Its better on Opera n Firefox though.
Issues related to YT playback are known and hopefully will be fixed with 3.1. Also, it would be nice to know when 3.1 would be available for TF.
P.S Please let your friend in Asus know that people are really freaked out by the length of the damn charging cable Asus offered
Thanks for your efforts

I got 4 times the screen goes black and could not turn it back on. I havd to do force shut down then it turned on

-sleep of death issue
-wifi seems to shut not down correctly
-high battery loss of about 3% per hour while screen off, but only sometimes. Xoom loses only about 0.5% average per hour.
Thx for your post and efforts

Battery performance in standby is poor if wifi is set to stay on when the screen turns off. This is unlike the Xoom, which gets equivalent standby performance (<.5%/hour burn rate) whether wifi is set to stay on or turn off when the screen turns off.
My guess is that the TF's wifi is not going into a sleep mode when the screen turns off and thus burns excessive battery life. The difference is <.5%/hour if wifi is set to turn off and >3.5%/hour if wifi is set to stay on.
Again, note that the Xoom does NOT exhibit this behavior, and that my Xoom and my TF are both running (mostly) identical apps, email syncing, etc. The only difference between them is the Asus apps that run in the background, but I've run tests with those shut off and they're not the cause of the difference.

Watching vids on the Youtube app lags so frequently it's unusable to me. This is on the latest update.

Oops, looks like we posted at the same time. Note that I expanded on the poor standby performance, and have found it VERY consistent and reproducible.

Thanks

You could leverage the poll in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074190

About half of the users reported touch screen issues at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068569

Sent mine in due to significant light bleeding around 3 sides. Seems to be a bit of a problem for ASUS, if this website is any indication.

Well here's a little list you can send. Can't comment on the support staff issues as I've not had to ring them myself.
Things needing to be fixed:
Tablet:
Speaker balance still off. (louder in right speaker on some devices)
Wifi model still displays 'mobile network signal' battery use bar even though no GSM/CDMA/HSPA chip exists.
Notable video camera 'screen delay'.
MyZine FC issue.
MyCloud settings icon does nothing.
Browser intermittent FC's.
Slow default browser page refresh rate, resulting in occasional artifacting.
Home screen 'bounceback' issue.
Tapping 'Install' in the market sometimes opens a random app.
Sometimes the device doesn't wake from standby, when using the default lock screen. There seems to be various forms of this bug. >Some possible fixes to get around this bug include: do a forced power off (10-12sec power button hold). Wait 30 secs. Then turn on as normal (5-6sec power button hold). Then just turn off the lock screen in the settings; Remove all Asus widgets from the home screen<
Battery usage data not showing proper list.
Parts of touchscreen unresponsive at times. - no known cause
MyLibrary app closes itself when corrupt/not compatible files found. (Asus developer feedback on this HERE)
HDMI only outputs at 720p. Possible flickering screen issues.
Speaker 'pop' issue. After a period of inactivity with the speakers, and then suddenly they are required to play a sound, a small pop is heard, before the rest of the audio plays properly.
Dock:
Drains its battery even if nothing is plugged into it.
Tablet disconnects from dock at random times.
No way to tell the level of internal battery.
While plugged into the tablet, and in standby mode, the battery drains fast.

I just sent the following e-mail to an Asus Tech earlier....let's see what they have to say.
was one of the lucky people to be able to order and receive a new Transformer last week. However, I have noticed some issues that I am currently worried about and I hope that someone can address for me. Some of them are product quality issues, while others are technical issues. Any information or feedback that can be provided about any of them is greatly appreciated.
1) When I power the device on, there seems to be a crackle that comes from the speakers, perhaps caused by them receiving power. Is this normal behavior or something that I should be worried about with my speakers crackling or being blown in the future?
2) I notice that there are a lot of "creaking" like noises when the tablet is held in certain positions, is this normal?
3) My device would not power on earlier today, and it took multiple pushes of the power button, but after about 12 tries and holding it for over 40 seconds, it finally powered on, even though I never powered it off. Is this a known issue that will be addressed in the next software update?
4) This is more of a complaint than anything, but the charging cable provided with the device is extremely short. Can you offer any add on products that can increase the length?
5) I have read that a lot of people have had problems with dust underneath the screen. While I have yet to notice any dust underneath the screen, I do notice that on the top left and bottom left of my device, there is a somewhat large gap between the bezel and the screen itself, which could lead to dust problems in the future. The gap on the left is significant, while the gap on the right is non-existent. Is this a design issue with all of them, or have I just received a defective product?
All in all, what can Asus do for me in order to alleviate these problems that I have already encountered with the product? I have also just recently purchased the Keyboard Dock, which I have read various accounts online of it also having issues. Will these issues be addressed by Asus in the next firmware update? I have multiple Asus laptops, and this is my first Asus Tablet, and although I was very excited for this product, there seems to be a lot of problems being encountered with it...
Any information that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

About the sound not being even, he knows about that. That's why he rma'ed mine. While a lot of people think it's a sw issue he isn't sure. Hence why he wanted mine asap to troubleshoot it since none of the units in the office do this. He thinks it could have been something with a batch of them if of is hw. He also knows about screen bleed. So keep them coming and at the end of the week I will email him.

not a huge issue in the scheme of things but offering the Transformer & dock in a choice of colors would be awesome. The brown/bronze thing happening here really doesn't show the device off to it's best advantage.
I took my setup to work, everybody thought it worked beautifully but several commented on the fact that they thought the color is unattractive and asked if
it came in anything different.

Did you show it to your lady friends?
Personally, I love the bronze finish. Kinda tired of looking at everything black n white

Photographs do not display as well as they should; colors are muted and they do not look as sharp as they do on my PC monitor. I have tried a couple different apps but they all display the same and given the great screen on the TF this is definitely not acceptable.

List of all the known G2x issues?

I currently have a Vibrant and I feel like this phone was a total POS until almost 6month later when voodoo lag fix came along and ROMS started to come out that had working GPS, better data, etc etc... If not for the dev community I would have thrown this thing out the window the 2nd time the GPS couldn't find me on google maps...
I love tinkering with a phone, but I also want to start with a phone that doesn't have random reboots, crappy GPS, slow file system lag and all the other crap I had to deal with the Vibrant (and my first android MyTouch 3g)... Althought most issues have been ironed out now, it took almost a year since I first purchased my Vibrant, and I am looking to upgrade either to G2x, Sensation or GSII. Don't want to start a battle which is better, but from what I gathered so far from G2x:
-Screen: hit or miss, some complain about bleed, some say its the best thing ever... seems like the quality control is really a hit or miss with the display
-Data: Won't connect to 4g network, generally seems to be unreliable and signal strength weaker than most phones but has a great GPS
-Battery: Heard there is a battery drain issue, some say its corrected with factory reset?
-Integration: Stock android 2.2? So I am guessing contacts aren't linked together to social network profiles?
-Build Quality: Better than most other phones, rock solid not many complain
-Speed: Looks like its a pretty quick phone for running on an un-optimized OS, will get quicker with updates
Before anyone starts praising and telling me this phones potential and that CM is going to make this awesome, I really don't care... my Vibrant had the potential to not be a total POS either, a year later its somewhat tolerable and right about the time when dual core phones have come out and me starting to look for upgrade. So I guess I just want to know what are some known issues with the phone today that you guys have noticed. I know there is no perfect phone, but I want something that can be tolerable for at least a little while before a custom rom comes out that doesn't breaks more things than it fixes
Me Personnally
I too also came from the vibrants ., and was also fed up with the crappy support from samsung, and that an official cm has still not seen the light of day.
Thats the reason i got the g2x. From what i heard, its completely open. Alot of the top devs for cm have or are getting the phone.
I think the screen bleed is something that everyone is going to have to get used too. I have some bleeds at the corner of my screen too.
Performance wise; without tweaks, just straight out of the box for me, this has destroyed my vibrant with teamweaskys latest rom.
I wont get the sensation because of the locked bootloader, and i am not going to trust or put up with the crap that samsung gave us with the vibrant.
This phone is AWESOME!!!!!!! i am loving it so much.
apart from the screen bleed, all the other issues you see here, are all temporary, i mean real temporary.
Ps
Saw a tweet come in with some peeps already running gingerbread on there gx2
Same Reason why I bought the phoen was because the bootloader is unlocked, but unfortunately this phone has to many other issue's.

These are my opinions.
-Screen: Yes, some bleed more than others. I think this issue has been blown way out of proportion as it seems the majority of users have to manipulate screen brightness, environment and content displayed on the screen in order to show bleed.
-Data: I only have 2G in my area. When I'm out in 4G areas away from home, I just set the connection to force 4G data and it's smokin' fast, never drops.
-GPS: Most of the time it locks on instantly for me on any Froyo ROM. Sometimes it takes about 60 seconds. If it looks like it's going to take a while, I usually close Maps, open GPS Status & Toolbox to refresh the AGPS data and it'll lock solid again. This should be fixed as soon as Gingerbread drivers are available.
-Battery: Battery is up to par with other Android phones in my opinion. Seems better on any tweaked out Froyo or Gingerbread ROM.
-Integration: I don't use social network/contact integration so I can't even touch on this. Don't know how and not interested. Sorry.
-Build Quality: Good weight, doesn't feel cheap. Generally accepted that it has Gorilla Glass. I have a couple extremely light scratches on my screen, so it's probably a good idea to get a screen protector if you care about such things. I just haven't touched a screen protector I like so I don't use one. I've taken the back off about 15 times and there is now one spot on the phone that if I squeeze, it creaks a little bit. Can't tell with normal use and still feels solid.
-Speed: Stock ROM is a little sluggish but with a couple flashable mods, maybe a kernel, this phone is super fast. I don't even feel the need to overclock. Currently running EaglesBlood Froyo 1.05 with faux's froyo kernel at the time of this writing.
Hope some of this helps you out.
Edit: And with an unlocked bootloader, just flash recovery and start crackflashing away. Love not messing with bootloaders.
Add Randomly REFORMATS to the list. My phone has reformatted itself randomly three times now since i've had it. stock. Once it like forgot it had an OS and just kept looping itself and then installed the OS randomly. Badass phone.

I can atest this also has happened to me. LG has a class action suit against them, you should all file your complaints.
I made a thread about this because it could give insight as to whether there are deeper hardware issues that could lead to some of these software instabilities;
The 3.5 mm audio jack has very audible noise/hiss on it when the amplifier is turned on (up to 1 second after any sound finishes playing, such as after the tone you hear when changing the ringer volume). This should be completely inaudible if the circuit itself is designed properly and everything is shielded where it should be, and if the components related to power supply/filtering are working properly. If someone could test this (takes 5 seconds) with their good and faulty phones, stock or modded, it may demonstrate something.
More: non-reboot bugs. On pressing the power button to unlock the phone today (3 days since factory reset, 1.5 weeks since buying) the unlock slider is missing, except for the white triangle pointing to the right. Sliding it makes it appear and play the animation, and it appears next unlock.
Another random: Holding volume down until it is vibrating non-stop and then powering down the phone causes some apps to show and do random things after the power down animation plays, before the screen suddenly blanks.
I still urge owners of variably configured G2x's to test for the presence of noise as described in my thread- if LG has hardware problems instead of all software, not everything is safe by modding the ROM. Perhaps the noise is shoddy software coding. The DAC and opamps used here would not create that, only the circuit design.

I don't even think I own a pair of headphones anymore... hahaha. I'll try this with a set of powered speakers as soon as my children let me.
Wow I was going to buy G2x. Can anybody answer about 4G data part who use it on regular basis? Is it really not reliable?
I was thinking of upgrading from HD2 to g2x mainly because of 4G and front camera, but if 4G is not properly working on this one, I have to select some different phone then..

all triumph problems are here... do you need to exchange?

GROUND RULES:
Who should keep reading:
Current owners of Triumph or perspective buys who are trying to cut through all the trolls, flame wars, useless and/or misleading information from the (many) other threads, to find out what or if anything was wrong with their phone, how to identify these problems and most importantly, how to make intelligent decisions on whether to return or exchange before the 30 days run out.
Who should stop now and go read a book instead:
People who have (or think they have) perfect phones and feels it’s necessary to defend the Triumph’s honor at any mentioning of a problem. People who believes everybody else is clueless therefore it’s necessary to advertise basic settings changes as cure-alls (i.e. enable “use wireless networks,” it will fix your GPS problems). please give others more credit than that. And last but not least, people who hate the T and thinks it’s just the worst phone ever made… you have no reason to stay here.
Still with me? Good…
I have personally owned two T’s. the first one had several problems that I ended up returning, the second one was much better but not problem free. I also have access to two other T’s owned by friends. Everything I post here are based on facts that I have personally observed, not second-hand info or hear-say.
** GPS problem:
First of all, Google Map does NOT depend on GPS. Being able to see your location on the map means NOTHING when it comes to GPS location. In order to test if you have a GPS problem you have to either use an app like GPS Test or start Google Navigation. All tests should be done outdoors under open sky and while you have a valid data connection (for A-GPS data download). The GPS should lock-in within 2 minutes or less (Google Navigation should start showing your real time location as a blue arrow and start giving you turn by turn instructions).
A few minutes after a gps lock, you should have a location accurate to within 15ft or less. If google nav consistently shows a visible blue circle (of any size) around your current location, then it is unable to give you an accurate location lock, it is a problem.
If you have any problem at all with GPS lock or location accuracy, your phone has a broken GPS. Take it back for an exchange! Do not listen to people saying that you could fix it by running some magical software or do a special gps dance. You are wasting your time. If it wasn’t broken in the first place then you would have no need for those “fixes.” My first phone had an almost unusable GPS, the replacement and both of my friend’s phones have no problem whatsoever. Using GPS Test app, I was able to clearly see how the satellite signal levels were 30-50% lower on the previous T when compared to my OV, while the replacement had levels that are comparable to the OV.
** Data disconnect and/or drop to 1x when GPS is turned on.
I did not notice this behavior on any of the 4 Triumph I tested on. GPS and wireless signal can not interfere with each other, so if this happens consistently and is making data connection unstable or GPS lock problematic then there’s most likely a hardware problem. the phone should be exchanged.
** Screen flicker, white out, color cast:
If your screen ever turns white completely, or has a VERY heavy color cast, the answer is obvious, get it exchanged. meanwhile, all Triumph’s screen have overall “cooler” color when compared to my V. there were slight variations between each phone but as long as it was not extreme (i.e. making white look blue and red look purple) it should not be considered a problem. Just make sure you have removed the top layer screen protector before making a judgement.
slight screen flicker while turning on/off the phone repeatedly might not be worth an exchange for that reason alone. My first phone and one of my friend’s phone had the flickers, while my replacement and the other friend’s phone did not. The slight flicker did not both me or my friends at all.
**screen protectors:
Yes, there are two screen protectors. No, there’s absolutely no reason to keep the top layer. The second layer is very well applied and I doubt it’s meant to be taken off. You will never be able to apply another protector as well as that. If you have screen sensitivity issues, I’d suggest exchanging the phone rather than taking off that second layer of protector. None of the 4 phones I tried had any sensitivity issue with the protector attached. If you had to take it off then your phone has a problem.
** visible touch screen sensor elements:
If you can see “dots” on the screen under normal use, you are seeing the sensor elements embedded in between glass players. You should NOT be able to see them in any way during normal use. Exchange the phone if you do. it was a known LCD panels manufacturing problem on some earlier phones (mostly HTC). None of the Triumph I have seen had that problem.
** Signal level:
All four of the Triumphs had lower signal dbm numbers when compared to my OV. However, with my borderline coverage (-105dbm at home and -110dbm in the office), I had not experienced any drop calls on the T. Data connections were marginal but no worse than the OV. Do not make any decision based on dBm numbers alone. dbm is a relative value and do not mean what a lot of people seemed to think it means. In any case, exchanging the phone is not going to help in any way.
** WIFI disconnect:
I have not run into this with Triumph however, I had similar issue running AOSP rom on my OV while having no problem with other roms. This is likely something caused by the combination of router and phone software. My suggestion would be to try as many different routers as you can also try router settings such as G vs N, WEP vs WPA, hidden vs broadcast… if you have same problem everywhere then by all means try an exchange, I doubt it would help however.
** Touch button in sensitivity:
This happens randomly on all the T I have tested. It is likely a software problem that will not be fixed by exchanging the phone.
** Camera clicking while focusing:
All 4 phones had slight clicking noise while focusing but none had trouble actually gaining a focus. Exchange if you can’t get it to focus at all. the clicking seems to be normal however.
** Camera color cast:
None of the phones I have tried had problem with “green/blue color cast in the middle of the screen” as some have reported. If you have already removed the green screen protector on the camera itself then you probably have a real problem and should exchange the phone. just check your expectations – cell phone cameras have cheap plastic little fish eye lenses. Don’t expect results like your Canon or Nikon.
** phone stops charging while on:
I noticed two things: 1. some micro-usb chargers such as the one that came with OV would at times refuse to charge while the phone was turned on. Unplugging a couple of times may fix it. I haven’t had problem with stock T charger or the charger that came with my BlackBerry. 2. The charger will shut off once the phone temperature reaches 42c. this is most noticeable while in a hot car with phone on the dashboard. This is normal and is the result of an (over)sensitive overcharge protection.
** light leakage around bottom edges:
All the phones I have tired had various degrees of light leakage. It is consistent with problems reported on other versions of the same phone released earlier. the leakage was only visible in relative darkness so personally I did not think it was worth worrying about.
** Mismatched MEID:
To check your phone’s MEID, go to settings-> about phone -> status. The MEID should be an 18 digit number matching the stickers on the box, outside of the battery door and behind the battery on the back of the phone. Both of my phones had mismatched MEID. The phone itself was showing a 17 digit number while the stickers all have 18 digit numbers. an 0 in the middle is missing on the phones. One person (VM rep?) in an earlier thread had said VM was aware that 3,000 phones had this MEID mismatch so it seemed to be a known problem.
Some people have reported trouble using Google Voice on phones with mis-matched MEID. I have not been able to verify that myself.
** software version 38 vs 39:
Both of my Triumphs had version 38 software. the previous one had horrible GPS and some screen flickering while the replacement did not. There were also some obvious software differences between the two phones, despite the same software version. The replacement phone camera default to 5mp, while the previous one default to VGA resolution. The previous phone gallery had four random pictures referencing some Chinese websites (seemed to be leftover web cache). These pictures were in the ROM and did not go away after hard reset. The replacement phone had an empty gallery. One of my friend’s Triumph came with v.39 software which also had some screen flickers.
By itself, the software version did not indicate a good or bad phone. test everything!
The main thing to keep in mind is that there are many reported problems, not all of them were all that crucial. Given the obvious inconsistencies in build quality, it is a real possibility that the exchange would turns out to be much worse than the original phone. you really have to look long and hard at each problem and make an educated decision for yourself. Meanwhile, there’s absolutely no reason to put up with major things like a broken LCD or gps or insensitive touch screen. Take it back to the store!
This list was put together over several days, mostly as notes to myself. So please excuse me if it rambles a bit. Let me know if there’s something else you would like me to check.
Thanks and good luck.
I never even realized the 2 screen protectors but sure enough, they are there. As far as the light issues at the bottom of the screen, I definitely see it on mine as well.
microphone is awful.. sounds like there is tape on it. i checked, there isn't.
Heading to exchange it.
awesome write up. thank you sir
Another issue I just found out Im having is with my bluetooth. I have a Jawbone Icon and the sound seems overloaded. When I connect my older motorola BT headset to it, it works fine. Strange indeed!
My 30 day return period ends this weekend so I have to make a decision. GPS is really the only problem I have, and it is intermittent. I was hoping a software fix would come out so i wouldn't have to worry about exchanging.
As far as my bluetooth issues with the sound overpowering, I actually just bit the bullet and bought the a MOTO BT today to see how it would work. No issues. Fishy...
my biggest problem is that i cant seem to be able to stream music properly in google music. does everyone have this problem or should i exchange?
I even had full bars yesterday, and it was barely sputtering out any music.

I doubt that is a hardware issue. Probably a result of VM's network. Try running a speed test app and see what kind of speeds you are getting. I prefer "Open Signal."
the speeds i got on all the tests were all drastically different. I say an average of about 350kbs...is that normal?

Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus running HOT - anyone else?

Love this tablet but this last few days it has started to get really warm on occasion.
On the left side, about an inch in from the SD card slot, the temperature really builds up quickly starting first on the back of the device and eventually getting so hot on the glass it becomes uncomfortable to hold and to swipe. I've seen 48 degrees!
I have noticed this happening when using Dolphin HD browser and particularly if Skype is running in the background.
I wiped the tab, didn't reinstall from market and just loaded Dolphin and it didn't make any difference.
I'm guessing faulty device since there are only a few isolated reports of this online.

Really strange, Phil. Based on your recommendation in "other" forums I turned in my Nook Tab and got a GTab7Plus and I'm just lovin it. Does everything I'd hoped it would do and more I haven't even figured out. So far, (knock on wood) I haven't gotten the Screen of Death nor has the unit gotten hot for any reason and I'm using dolphin browser exclusively. So......you may have a defective unit. Good luck.
Yeah, I think it was faulty. I took it back to Best Buy and they had not had any other returns for this issue.
Unfortunately they are also out of stock so I don't currently have a tablet at all! Seeing what is coming down the pike in the way of tablets I might just wait and see what transpires in the next 3 months. If I get antsy then I'll just pick up another GT7+ (or back to a Nook Tablet if the CM9 project advances quickly).
Also, do you see a color cast on yours at all? I noticed that when there was a white background, for instance reading a book on Kindle or Nook apps, the right lower side of the page had a warm tinge - pink/peach colored. It was quite irritating.
Having issues with Nook app opening my Nook ebooks.

Yeah, I think it was faulty. I took it back to Best Buy and they had not had any other returns for this issue.

FloridaPhil:
I have received my 7+ and downloaded and installed the Nook and Kindle apps without a hitch. The Kindle books are fine but I seem to be having a problem opening my Nook books. Darn, I am in the midst of a great book and hate reading on my phone.
Any tips on how best to install and manage my Nook ebooks? And, I have a 32gb sd card which I haven't installed but plan to tonight. Will that make a difference? Should I "format" the card before installing on the 7+? How does that work?
Thanks a bunch!
I noticed on the nook software that I needed to open the software and then reopen it before the book would load. Second time is a charm I guess.

Mine as well, in the same location as you specified too. Gets damn hot in that location with I'm using it in the car for navigating with Google Maps and it's plugged into the charger. Also in the same scenario the charge level is still going down and not up
I' ve been using VTL Launcher and had some previous issues with my home wifi (couldn't reconnect so my tab was always trying to find it again and again). After resetting router and mainly uninstalling VTL Launcher my tab stopped to be hot and battery life increased rapidly. So I was almost decided tonreturn it due to this problems but since then everything is finally ok and start to enjoy this tab (previously had GT7 original and Note).
Regarding navigation with google maps- consider that there is also huge use of data amount so warmness is probable. I'm using Sygis Aura and has no problems with hottness and also not original car charger has enough power to charge on the roads.
So far haven't noticed the tab getting hot. Just trying to figure out how to use Kies. What a friggin nightmare! Why have they not simplified the Kies interface? It is so convoluted!

Interesting - but mine was totally stock. Yeah, I had added a ton of apps but it was running regular TouchWizz. My little Nook Color running CM7 has exactly the same apps and doesn't even get warm.
what are you using kies for? my computer (win 7) didn't recognize my tab until
i installed kies, it also installed drivers so i can now transfer files
To FloridaPhil: And how long is your battery life? Is wifi ok? Well I' ve noticed then, that our tab doesn't have still very apropriate task managing and this can be causeb exactly by this. Take a look in settings, applications and battery use...I couldn't believa my eyes but even I'm using good task manager with automatic shutndowns of slected apps, there are still huge amount of running apps that drain battery and may cause getting hot. Next thing as well was a fact, that even when wifi connection held perfectly, there was still word 'searching' each couple of seconds (take a look in wifinsettings...)- so next possible reason for getting warm...

It's only searching because your at the wifi settings screen. If you are at the screen where different wifi networks can be selected, android (logically) thinks you might want to select a different network, so scans. If you STAY on that screen, it assumes you want to keep scanning (why else would you stay on that screen?)
This is something that all wifi enabled android devices do. It's NOT scanning every few seconds if you aren't on that specific settings screen...
Gary
Thanks Gary for reasonable explanation, yes this is logical. I was just confused from this, cause not Galaxy Note, nor previous Tab or Streak was behaving like this. But is true that this is my first honeycomb machine and I may not realise this before or it had been different in settings.

My Galaxy SII (gingerbread, AT&T, SGH-I777) does this as well. Even my iPhone does it.
I'm using Kies Air to wirelessly transfer and synch my contacts, calendar, etc....... Experimented and have transferred photos and some other files. Also worked using the USB cable and my Windows 7 recognized and installed drivers. It recognized the SD card as my E drive.
Regarding the heating up issue, so far I have not experienced this. The battery use is under control when I turn off all wireless when I leave my home.
Getting used to the Touchwiz interface but I also installed Go Launcher EX and use that sometimes.
Video playback is awesome on this little tab; last night I was watching movie trailers and was surprised with the sound as well. The Nook's sound was always a bit weak.
I installed an anti-glare screen film and it is awesome for reading. Doesn't detract from the beautiful display and the fonts are crisp.
Regarding opening my Nook books I realized that it worked as soon as I installed my SD card and I downloaded my books so I wouldn't have to deal with having a wireless connection to read my books.
Playing around with the wallpapers and customizing the Samsung screens and installed a super cool "steam punk skull" live wallpaper and it is amazing! Found it free via the Amazon app store....it is fantastic! I also found other beautiful live wallpapers via the Amazon app store including snow scenes.
The tab connected flawlessly to my Samsung Galaxy 4G T-Mobile phone's access point and used that to stream Pandora and download some Kindle books. It was done in my office which doesn't have the best T-Mobile network access and it was surprisingly fast and smooth. No stuttering of the music and emails and Facebook worked great.
I ordered the 6' long usb cable for the tab via Amazon and it has shipped; hopefully it is well matched and charges up the tab just as well as the stock 3' shortie cable. I noted other comments regarding the slow charging of the tab and found that turning off the wifi or simply shutting it down speeds up the charging dramatically.
So that is my report so far and let me say I am enjoying the 7+ tab immensely.

Well i guess thats pretty normal, mine goes up to 42C sometimes.. I guess it depends on your surrounding and climate.
You sure it's a normal thing (this temperature range)? I'm here in Thailand so the ambient temperature is hot to begin with, but the thing is; with prolonged used my hands get uncomfortable.

Is your TF700 a keeper?

I've seen a few hit or miss issues that have been coming to light since the release of the TF700 infinity. On some devices, it seems to work and on others, not as well or not at all. From this, it seemed quite necessary to have a thread to identify the issues that others may encounter and for what they should check to know if they have a "good device" or whether it should be returned. Please let me know if their are any items that should be related to this list. If you wish to discuss your tablet's attributes (both good and bad) further, Pretoriano80 has made such a thread: [Infinity issues/defects/good features] Share your issues, defects or best features
Make sure you charge your tablet before using! Explanation in point 3.
Also, do not update past 9.4.5.26 during these tests if you want to use NVFlash!
1- Does your device have good build quality?
Some people have found that there are scratches on the device, frame's bent, the display is poorly set, the ports may be improperly mounted or other such things. It is recommended that if you encounter any of these that you return the device to get another one since you paid a lot of money for a "good" device. The tablet might click at corners, some of the backlight might bleed through around the edges of the display, or maybe show a slight but often not serious protrusion of the screen from the device. It's up to you to judge whether the extremity of this occurrence on your device are serious enough to warrant a return depending on your definition of "quality".
A possible test for "light bleed" is to take a picture from the camera in either a dark room or the camera lens covered (objective is to take a "black" photo). Open the image in the gallery app and turn up the brightness on the device. In this fashion you should be able to notice any "severe" cases of light bleed like this. If the light bleed is little and only noticeable during startup, then it's probably nothing to worry about.
2- Does your device have haptic feedback? (Does it vibrate properly?)
When you turn on and off your device, it should vibrate. This vibration will be subtle like the feeling of a working electrical appliance and not like a console joystick. If it doesn't, then it probably is defective. There are various methods to getting some type of jiggle out of the tablet if you want a more extensive test. One example is to add such feedback to your on-screen keyboard via Settings -> Language & Input. I'll just go over the basic "Android Keyboard". Select the sliders button next to the keyboard, look for "vibrate on keypress", put a little check next to that, then go into "advanced settings". By default, these vibrations are set to 1ms which is a duration too short to provide any feedback. Adjust the "Keypress vibration duration settings" to something like 100ms in order to ensure that the buzz happens. Finally, verify that your default keyboard is set to the "Android Keyboard" and then open up something like SuperNote where you can type. You should have some buzzing upon every keypress. When done with this test, just go back into the keyboard settings and disable the "vibrate on keypress".
3- Is your battery life ~9 hours in power-saving mode or ~6 hours in balanced mode?
Some people have noticed that they either never reach this amount or never come close to it. This is kind of an expected behavior since on the first page of the instructions manual (you did read the manual, right?) it mentions this:
"Fully charge the battery up to eight hours for the first-time use. The battery reaches its maximum capacity after one full charging and discharging cycle." Therefore, one is supposed to charge the battery for up to an 8 hour period prior to use and then discharge the battery (until ~10% or so). You may encounter a variant of this concerning "a few cycles" but still, right after tearing the plastic off the box like a rapid child at Christmas, ensure that you just plug it in and forget about it for 8 hours (or until the charging light turns off). Otherwise, it can have a lasting negative impact on battery life.
More information about Li-ion can be found here.
4- Does the GPS work?
The TF700 shares a few things with the TF201 Prime (which had notoriously bad wireless, including Wifi communication, Bluetooth, and GPS). Some owners of the Prime didn't remember to check GPS even when everything else worked and later needed to get a Dongle. Ergo, why I put it here high on the list. I believe many of the issues dealing with hardware and software have been addressed by ASUS so if your GPS doesn't work, try updating (not past 9.4.5.26!) the device or send it back since it might be hardware related. Make sure that when testing, you have the "find location via wifi" option turned off if using Maps. Otherwise, test with a tool from Google Play Store like GPS Status or GPS Test. Note: testing may involve going outside and dancing with the device as the first connection is often the most difficult to get.
When GPS is working, you should see a little circle with a blinking dot inside in the lower right-hand corner. Sometimes, the dot might not blink and can seem to influence how well GPS programs work. Its a strange thing but with a simple solution (from myself encountering it on both the TF300 and the TF700): just open the notifications bar and close it again. The dot should be blinking. If not, try actually turning off and then turning back on the GPS via the notifications bar.
5- Does mini-HDMI work?
Though not necessarily a tendency of faults in the infinity, it is important to check all the offered functionality of the device prior to making it a permanent fixture in your life. Remember that if you don't have a friend with a mini-HDMI cable, Walmart (and many other stores) will accept returns provided they are within a particular time period. Feel free to use this return policy to test your device.
6- Can you watch video/youtube/netflix/etc while using a bluetooth headset?
Some people have noticed that there is a huge decrease in speed when watching a video while using a bluetooth headset for audio. The cause of this is unknown and the only explanation we know of is "because wifi and bluetooth share the same antenna". This seems plausible except that many other devices also use the same antenna for both functionalities yet do not display this behavior. Due to the underlying fact we do not know whether it is software or hardware related, it is advisable to return the product.
7- Does the headphone jack work?
Just for thoroughness and ease-of-testing, plug in a set of ear buds and make sure you hear sound. Some have complained that the quality is mediocre due to a humming noise but that the noise is negligible. If the noise is too pronounced, there still is the mounted speaker and if point 6's test was successful, bluetooth is still an option.
8- Does your device feel quick to respond? If not, are you on firmware version .26?
It has been widely noted that version .26 of the firmware made the tablet very snappy. This also helped the device to recognize more microSD cards but also caused problems with NTFS-formatted drives. If you aren't getting the response you want, try upgrading to .26 (not beyond that). Additionally, if your microSD card is NTFS, you may want to reformat it (backup whatever you want to keep first) to FAT32 or exFAT until the issues with NTFS are ironed out. This point also concerns point 9 further down.
9- Can you receive OTA updates? (This should be fixed since Aug 7)
Provided that you are on version .21 or .22, you should be able to receive updates from ASUS for your device via the "About Tablet" option in settings. If you cannot, this might be indicative of another issue which has yet to be identified. You can apply updates without OTA via these methods:
(easiest way)[HOW TO]Tired to wait the .26 with WW TF700 device?
(another way)*** Firmware News & Alternative Install Methods*** Ver. 9.4.5.26 27/07
(requires root)[HOWTO] Manually updating firmware using "dlpkgfile" download via Asus FOTA server
(requires unlocked bootloader)[HowTo] Restore Stock Recovery and Install .26 OTA Manually with Unlocked Bootloader
(requires unlocked bootloader and TWRP custom recovery)[CWM] Repackaged OTA update 9.4.5.26 US/WW versions
Make sure you do not update past 9.4.5.26 if you want to use NVFlash!
10- (Only if this is important to you and then only if you are willing to forego any ASUS warranty) Can you unlock the bootloader? (This should be fixed since Aug 7)
Bonus Warning: ASUS has noted that using their bootloader unlocker will void your warranty and all OTA updates for your device will cease. However, without this unlocking, you will not be able to run custom ROMs nor will you be able to use NVFlash to make your device brick-proof.
[Device is unlocked][Video Added] Bootloader Unlock Tool Released [25.7.2012]
If you are still within your store's "grace period", you may want to try this out to verify if your device will ever be able to run non-ASUS android systems. There's no way of knowing at this moment if the bootloader unlocker will work on your device without actually trying to unlock it. If it does not work, it might be due to their service being unavailable, your serial number might not yet be in their database of devices for the unlock to succeed, your device serial number internally might not match your external serial number (on the sticker), or the problem might be something else entirely. Many of those whose bootloader would not unlock did not receive OTAs either so this shares the "issue which has yet to be identified" from point 9.
If you can give your tab a :good: to all of these points, then you have a good device! Congratulations! :highfive:

Yep, mines a keeper.
Build quality is acceptable .. (I own an ipad also) ...I'm going to say 80% the build quality of the ipad. It does OTA and manual updates just fine. Headphone jack works. Has slight click if you press the screen by the speaker ...but only noticable because I read here that it clicks if you press by the speaker . Speed, temps, light bleed, battery life ....all as expected ...not perfect but perfectly acceptable. I am enjoying the tablet, and have no major complaints. I can only assume it will get better with JB when it comes out.
The ipad is more polished, faster, easier to use ....but not by a huge margin. And I make allowance for the immaturity of android tablets and the OS compared to ipad and iOS. I think the trade off is worth it for the additional control... and eventual rooting of the device.
Price ....hmmmm... perhaps a bit high compared to the ipad.... about $75 less would have been nice ....but it's basically a toy for me so I can't complain too much. And part of the whole thing is I wanted a tablet....and I wanted to support the Android market so it would stand a better chance at competing with the ipad... because honestly I think Andriod is the future of tablets ...not iOS.
I'd say the single disappointment is ....I bought the tablet to watch motorcycle racing videos from MotoGP.com, which I pay about $120 US a year to be a member ..... guess what...the tablet will not play the archived videos from this site ....it will stream live video fine, it will play all other "current" content fine...but will not play the archived videos ...... my iPad plays them just fine. I'm in contact with MotoGP.com trying to solve the problem ...but it's not a new problem ....its across the Asus tablet line.
Still.... I enjoy the TF700T, and think it's a good product ....although perhaps should be offered at a bit more of a discount compared to the iPad ....for now.
I have no regrets.

This thread is really just supposed to be a developing checklist for people to verify their tablets since it seems that not all problems are experienced by all users and some problems are more extreme than others. That being noted, how did you try to access said videos? Is there a specific program or application you are required to use? Did you try other such programs from the Play store? Since you are paying for your access, I doubt it would be something that a non-member would be able to assist much.
Yes it is a keeper

6- Does your device feel quick to respond? If not, are you on firmware version .26?
Yes, like butter. I still want jelly Bean though.
7- Is your battery life ~9 hours in power-saving mode or ~6 hours in balanced mode?
6 hours in balanced, yes. Never go to power saving because lag.

No, bootloader unlocked.

Already did
The only issue I've really had with my device after upgrading to .26 is occasional lock-ups. One lock-up concerned me enough to feel a need to return the device. The screen filled with vertical (if holding landscape) white bars. Has anyone else experienced such issues?
I haven't tested the HDMI yet. And other then the inability to OTA or unlock everything is working perfectly on the latest build

My friend found one at Best Buy here in NJ. I told him to return it (not exchange) because of the amount of light bleed alone. He was not able to update it, and it just kept crashing on him which made it almost impossible to use. He's going to try hard reset it again to see if any of that helps.
1- Does your device have good build quality?
Mine is perfect.
2- Does the GPS work?
GPS so far works great without using the AGPS to assist.
3- Does mini-HDMI work?
Have a cable from my Prime, both worked flawlessly as does my Bionic.
4- Can you watch video/youtube/netflix/etc while using a bluetooth headset?
Funny thing it does drop from about 20 Mbps to about 3Mbps down, but that won't change no matter how far from the router. The upload is 4Mbps on both no matter how far from the router. It's not the dual antenna that's the problem, it's that they both use one controller chip for the two.
5- Does the headphone jack work?
No problems on mine.
6- Does your device feel quick to respond? If not, are you on firmware version .26?
Was definitely laggy on .21, on .26 MUCH better especially in performance mode. I'm excited for JB.
7- Is your battery life ~9 hours in power-saving mode or ~6 hours in balanced mode?
I charged about 4 hrs till green/fully charged. Funny thing is you can't overcharge these new batteries now and days. They are set to auto stop charging once full (that's the benefit of them now) So I have never "overcharged" because it's not possible. That being said I did a full charge, and am working on the first full depletion to recharge. I'm at 62% and that's 3 days later lol. I have been using it light/moderate the past few days. At least 3.5 hrs of Netflix streaming, setting it up, and not turning it off overnight. We'll see but so far so good and Ifinitely (like that ) better than my Prime.
8- Can you receive OTA updates?
Not OTA, manual worked just fine
Good list, thanks. Mine has passed all of these so far but the headphone test. I forgot that one. I guess I'll give it a shot tonight.
" "Fully charge the battery up to eight hours for the first-time use. The battery reaches its maximum capacity after one full charging and discharging cycle.""
It says" upto 8 hours" It doesn't mean you NEED the full 8 hours. Once you go green and are 100% fully charged, the charger shuts down on its own so not to overheat the battery. The "upto 8 hours" is for folks charging their device via USB on their PC - - which can take up to 8 hours to getting that full charge.
I just got mine yesterday, and while I haven't had time to test either HDMI or full battery cycle (though it's doing pretty well so far) all else is wonderful. Great screen, OTA update to build 26, great wifi and gps, headphones work fine. Sound out of headphones and BT headset is actually great. I do have a millisecond lag with BT audio and watching streaming video, but I could actually live with it, it's not that bad.
This one is definitely a keeper.
I have a quick question while I'm checking my tablet, which arrived yesterday... my screen is uniform across the edge, no creaking or inconsistencies, but the entire surface is raised, or at least isn't flush like my previous Prime. Is that normal? Anyone have a completely flushed screen on their 700? Thanks.

Same here - more like 1/16th inch, maybe?
Mine looks perfect, but if I press a bit harder on the screen (you won't do this with normal usage) I get a hissing noice which sound like air is escaping from between the screen. At that moment I can see deformations on the screen. I have read other people do have the same issue, but wondering if this is normal (so all TF700 have it?) or if I should exchange. Any advice?
I have one really big scratch on the dockingstation. Going back to the store tomorrow to get another one.
Added xRevilatioNx's and neo1738's clarification regarding initial battery charge and the green charging light turning off.
Yeah, I agree with you that the new batteries can't be overcharged in the literal sense. It was merely to emphasize the fact that a "full charge" is necessary to receive optimum life out of the device's battery. We don't really know what type of charge existed on the device prior to our receipt, so it's best (or in a worse case scenario) just to charge it for the 8 hours regardless of the status of the light. Does it make a difference if it's 8 hours or until the green light turns off? Probably not. But for the Android neophytes just getting their hands on a tablet for the 1st or 2nd time, I think that my explanation is still applicable and satisfactory to provide a perspective easy to understand and beneficial to the consumer. Thanks for the detailed clarification though.
Received my champagne gold today and doesn't seem to be any issues at all. No light bleed, WiFi and bluetooth are perfect, and no I/O issues (updated as soon as I turned on the device). Seeing as the champagne golds seem to have come latter in the production cycle, it seems they are improving their processes slowly but surely.

Screen brigthness reduced on dark backgrounds

Hi guys,
So I just got my forth Infinity Everything seems to be OK this time so I can finally play with it There is one thing I didn't notice in the last three tabs, but it is because I have never used it in dark conditions so far. Anyway I just noticed that if my brigthness is set to 10-30% (no auto mode) and if I run some application with dark background (like Gallery, YouTube or some screens of Google Play) it is visible (but you need to pay attention) that screen gets dimmed a little and if I return to homescreen it is noticable that screen get's brighter after some time. I think it won''t be visible, but there is some little lag of adjusting the brightness. If I reduce the brightness maximally to the left it is not visible, also if I move it to >80% it is also not visible. If I run app with white background (like GMail or Internet) there is no such issue. Is it normal ? It is not big issue, but I'm praying I don't have to send it for replacement once again I checked it both on normal and balanced mode while running on battery. I have to check if there is difference if I'm plugged into AC power, but I don't have such issue on my HTC Sensation.
Sounds like the same issue I'm experiencing.

I'll watch netflix then press the home button, the screen stays at video brightness (darker) for a second then restores back to the original setting.

In my case I can't tell how much it has dropped, because looking at the brigthness level in statusbar it seems to be the same, but it is still visible that the brightness has been reduced/increased. In my case it is definitely not reduced/increased by 15%, I would say it is something like 2-5%. Besides that in my case everything is OK if my brightess level is 0% or more than 80%. But in your case it seems to be similar, because you are watching netflix (dark background) and when you go to homescreen the brightness is restored. Maybe it is some power-saving method to prolonge our battery lifes ? Anyone else can confirm the issue ?
Well I may have overstated, when brightness is at zero there is quite a drop. The higher the brightness, the less noticeable it is. It doesn't change on the brightness slider for me either, just seems to dim a little. I think it is the same issue. I'm guessing it is normal.
OK, so it seems to be the same issue. Let's wait for other user to reply if they observe the same thing.
This sounds like the SmartDimmer (which is different than auto-brightness - it's kinda like dynamic contrast). You can disable it if you are rooted.

Hi jtrosky, it is definitely this issue ! Thanks for putting it here ! I will root my Infinity in few minutes just to get rid of it
Do some SEARCHING BEFORE POSTING.

Believe me - I did thorough search on xda and transformerforums and didn't find this thread. Sometimes it is not that easy to find what you are looking for
Ok, you have jtrosky to thank then. Google search with "xda" added to the query normally works better than the internal one here.
BTW, greetings from Warsaw, misiek.

What's really strange is that I just picked up a Nexus 7 and the "SmartDimmer" is barely even noticeable on the Nexus 7, which is where that tweak originally came from (over in the Nexus 7 forums)!?
The issue is *way* more noticeable on the TF700 (I probably would have never even noticed the issue on the Nexus 7) - almost like there is some sort of bug in the TF700 firmware as it relates to the SmartDimmer. It drove me *crazy* on the TF700...
Anyway, it's well worth rooting to get rid of the constant flickering!
EDIT: By the way, the search function in the Tapatalk app is next to useless... Unless someone knows something that I don't - for example, is it even possible to limit the search to a particular forum/subforum in tapatalk?

That's strange, as they're both IPS and manufactured by ASUS (the Infinity with some added brightness if used), it'd be nice to compare the config files you mentioned in your posts on both devices, along with smartdimmer settings in the plaintext files.
Just a thought, but as there are more pixels on the Infinity - is it actually faster on the N7?
