Screen brigthness reduced on dark backgrounds - Asus Transformer TF700

Hi guys,
So I just got my forth Infinity Everything seems to be OK this time so I can finally play with it There is one thing I didn't notice in the last three tabs, but it is because I have never used it in dark conditions so far. Anyway I just noticed that if my brigthness is set to 10-30% (no auto mode) and if I run some application with dark background (like Gallery, YouTube or some screens of Google Play) it is visible (but you need to pay attention) that screen gets dimmed a little and if I return to homescreen it is noticable that screen get's brighter after some time. I think it won''t be visible, but there is some little lag of adjusting the brightness. If I reduce the brightness maximally to the left it is not visible, also if I move it to >80% it is also not visible. If I run app with white background (like GMail or Internet) there is no such issue. Is it normal ? It is not big issue, but I'm praying I don't have to send it for replacement once again I checked it both on normal and balanced mode while running on battery. I have to check if there is difference if I'm plugged into AC power, but I don't have such issue on my HTC Sensation.

Sounds like the same issue I'm experiencing.

Hi CeeJayII,
Yes, your issue seems to be related, but is not the same. You wrote:

I'll watch netflix then press the home button, the screen stays at video brightness (darker) for a second then restores back to the original setting.

In my case I can't tell how much it has dropped, because looking at the brigthness level in statusbar it seems to be the same, but it is still visible that the brightness has been reduced/increased. In my case it is definitely not reduced/increased by 15%, I would say it is something like 2-5%. Besides that in my case everything is OK if my brightess level is 0% or more than 80%. But in your case it seems to be similar, because you are watching netflix (dark background) and when you go to homescreen the brightness is restored. Maybe it is some power-saving method to prolonge our battery lifes ? Anyone else can confirm the issue ?

Well I may have overstated, when brightness is at zero there is quite a drop. The higher the brightness, the less noticeable it is. It doesn't change on the brightness slider for me either, just seems to dim a little. I think it is the same issue. I'm guessing it is normal.

OK, so it seems to be the same issue. Let's wait for other user to reply if they observe the same thing.

This sounds like the SmartDimmer (which is different than auto-brightness - it's kinda like dynamic contrast). You can disable it if you are rooted.

Hi jtrosky, it is definitely this issue ! Thanks for putting it here ! I will root my Infinity in few minutes just to get rid of it

Do some SEARCHING BEFORE POSTING.

Believe me - I did thorough search on xda and transformerforums and didn't find this thread. Sometimes it is not that easy to find what you are looking for

Ok, you have jtrosky to thank then. Google search with "xda" added to the query normally works better than the internal one here.
BTW, greetings from Warsaw, misiek.

What's really strange is that I just picked up a Nexus 7 and the "SmartDimmer" is barely even noticeable on the Nexus 7, which is where that tweak originally came from (over in the Nexus 7 forums)!?
The issue is *way* more noticeable on the TF700 (I probably would have never even noticed the issue on the Nexus 7) - almost like there is some sort of bug in the TF700 firmware as it relates to the SmartDimmer. It drove me *crazy* on the TF700...
Anyway, it's well worth rooting to get rid of the constant flickering!
EDIT: By the way, the search function in the Tapatalk app is next to useless... Unless someone knows something that I don't - for example, is it even possible to limit the search to a particular forum/subforum in tapatalk?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2

That's strange, as they're both IPS and manufactured by ASUS (the Infinity with some added brightness if used), it'd be nice to compare the config files you mentioned in your posts on both devices, along with smartdimmer settings in the plaintext files.
Just a thought, but as there are more pixels on the Infinity - is it actually faster on the N7?

[Q] What are your major issues? Sending to an Asus tech

Guys, I've been talking to Hai one of the techs at Asus US for the transformer. He knows I'm on xda a lot and thought I could be a huge resource for him to discover the most common issues people are having with their transformers. He knows a lot of us are power users and wants to help out xda'era as much as he can. So reply to this thread with any issues you are having and I will report back to him the most common of the issues. I also *****ed about how little their call center knew. My initial email to him actually spurred a meeting internally on how they can better train the techs in the call center (which he told me is in Jamaica)
Thanks

I just gave you a thanks for helping to promote & solidify Asus's relationship with this community! If Asus can keep this behavior up, their products will continue to fly off the shelves, such personal support is unheard of it seems in an android world where cell phone & now tablet owners wait forever for updates and help.
screen flickering when playing via HDMI out,
resolution only 720 p.
My issues
1) The speakers and sound playback on this device is lousy. The right speaker is louder than the left. The overall music playback is of low fidelity and low volume.
2) Touch screen doesn't register clicks religiously. I can reproduce this on any damn browser, on the XDA forum home page consistently.
3) Asus keyboard is very very slow. Instantly switched to the Android one
4) Browsing and multi touch is not smooth on the default browser. Its better on Opera n Firefox though.
Issues related to YT playback are known and hopefully will be fixed with 3.1. Also, it would be nice to know when 3.1 would be available for TF.
P.S Please let your friend in Asus know that people are really freaked out by the length of the damn charging cable Asus offered
Thanks for your efforts
I got 4 times the screen goes black and could not turn it back on. I havd to do force shut down then it turned on
-sleep of death issue
-wifi seems to shut not down correctly
-high battery loss of about 3% per hour while screen off, but only sometimes. Xoom loses only about 0.5% average per hour.
Thx for your post and efforts

Battery performance in standby is poor if wifi is set to stay on when the screen turns off. This is unlike the Xoom, which gets equivalent standby performance (<.5%/hour burn rate) whether wifi is set to stay on or turn off when the screen turns off.
My guess is that the TF's wifi is not going into a sleep mode when the screen turns off and thus burns excessive battery life. The difference is <.5%/hour if wifi is set to turn off and >3.5%/hour if wifi is set to stay on.
Again, note that the Xoom does NOT exhibit this behavior, and that my Xoom and my TF are both running (mostly) identical apps, email syncing, etc. The only difference between them is the Asus apps that run in the background, but I've run tests with those shut off and they're not the cause of the difference.

About half of the users reported touch screen issues at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068569
Sent mine in due to significant light bleeding around 3 sides. Seems to be a bit of a problem for ASUS, if this website is any indication.
Well here's a little list you can send. Can't comment on the support staff issues as I've not had to ring them myself.
Things needing to be fixed:
Tablet:
Speaker balance still off. (louder in right speaker on some devices)
Wifi model still displays 'mobile network signal' battery use bar even though no GSM/CDMA/HSPA chip exists.
Notable video camera 'screen delay'.
MyZine FC issue.
MyCloud settings icon does nothing.
Browser intermittent FC's.
Slow default browser page refresh rate, resulting in occasional artifacting.
Home screen 'bounceback' issue.
Tapping 'Install' in the market sometimes opens a random app.
Sometimes the device doesn't wake from standby, when using the default lock screen. There seems to be various forms of this bug. >Some possible fixes to get around this bug include: do a forced power off (10-12sec power button hold). Wait 30 secs. Then turn on as normal (5-6sec power button hold). Then just turn off the lock screen in the settings; Remove all Asus widgets from the home screen<
Battery usage data not showing proper list.
Parts of touchscreen unresponsive at times. - no known cause
MyLibrary app closes itself when corrupt/not compatible files found. (Asus developer feedback on this HERE)
HDMI only outputs at 720p. Possible flickering screen issues.
Speaker 'pop' issue. After a period of inactivity with the speakers, and then suddenly they are required to play a sound, a small pop is heard, before the rest of the audio plays properly.
Dock:
Drains its battery even if nothing is plugged into it.
Tablet disconnects from dock at random times.
No way to tell the level of internal battery.
While plugged into the tablet, and in standby mode, the battery drains fast.

I just sent the following e-mail to an Asus Tech earlier....let's see what they have to say.
was one of the lucky people to be able to order and receive a new Transformer last week. However, I have noticed some issues that I am currently worried about and I hope that someone can address for me. Some of them are product quality issues, while others are technical issues. Any information or feedback that can be provided about any of them is greatly appreciated.
1) When I power the device on, there seems to be a crackle that comes from the speakers, perhaps caused by them receiving power. Is this normal behavior or something that I should be worried about with my speakers crackling or being blown in the future?
2) I notice that there are a lot of "creaking" like noises when the tablet is held in certain positions, is this normal?
3) My device would not power on earlier today, and it took multiple pushes of the power button, but after about 12 tries and holding it for over 40 seconds, it finally powered on, even though I never powered it off. Is this a known issue that will be addressed in the next software update?
4) This is more of a complaint than anything, but the charging cable provided with the device is extremely short. Can you offer any add on products that can increase the length?
5) I have read that a lot of people have had problems with dust underneath the screen. While I have yet to notice any dust underneath the screen, I do notice that on the top left and bottom left of my device, there is a somewhat large gap between the bezel and the screen itself, which could lead to dust problems in the future. The gap on the left is significant, while the gap on the right is non-existent. Is this a design issue with all of them, or have I just received a defective product?
All in all, what can Asus do for me in order to alleviate these problems that I have already encountered with the product? I have also just recently purchased the Keyboard Dock, which I have read various accounts online of it also having issues. Will these issues be addressed by Asus in the next firmware update? I have multiple Asus laptops, and this is my first Asus Tablet, and although I was very excited for this product, there seems to be a lot of problems being encountered with it...
Any information that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

About the sound not being even, he knows about that. That's why he rma'ed mine. While a lot of people think it's a sw issue he isn't sure. Hence why he wanted mine asap to troubleshoot it since none of the units in the office do this. He thinks it could have been something with a batch of them if of is hw. He also knows about screen bleed. So keep them coming and at the end of the week I will email him.

not a huge issue in the scheme of things but offering the Transformer & dock in a choice of colors would be awesome. The brown/bronze thing happening here really doesn't show the device off to it's best advantage.
I took my setup to work, everybody thought it worked beautifully but several commented on the fact that they thought the color is unattractive and asked if
it came in anything different.

Screen constantly adjusts brightness...

Just received my tf700t and updated to the new firmware. I noticed that when switching from any screen back to home screen and even throughout watching movies on my tablet, the screen brightness constantly adjusts even with automatic brightness turned off. Its pretty annoying esp. while watching movies. Is there a solution to this problem?
Can't say I have noticed that, and I've used it both with automatic brightness on and off. Maybe try a factory reset?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
I noticed the same thing - I believe it's the LED backlight adjusting when you go from bright-to-dim and dim-to-bright screens. It is annoying though. I'm assuming that I'll just get used to it (I just got my TF700 yesterday)...

Yes, I have noticed it as well. Doesn't bother me, though -- I'd rather have the system tweak itself for brightness than just picking a brightness off-hand and sticking to it.
I've previously owned the tf101 and never had anything like this happen. I use my tf700t at about 30-40% ips, and it constantly adjusts. I haven't tried it at full brightness, but it still is weird that it would keep adjusting even throughout watching movies. It almost like 3 or 4 subtle brightness changes when going from say the apps screen back to the home menu (on default wallpaper). I went through all my settings and googled it without success, so I'm figuring that people either don't notice or just aren't bothered by it. It's driving me crazy though
I noticed this...and thought I was going crazy. Thanks for confirming it's not just me and yes it drives me nuts. Hopefully there comes out a way to stop it.
Auto brightness was way too dim for me. So I've disabled it and set the brightness myself.

What I'm talking about has nothing to do with auto brightness. When it's turned off, there seems to be some type of secondary auto brightness that you have no control over because it constantly adjusts when switching through certain apps/screens and playing movies. Look closely at the screen and you should see it. I'm glad I'm not alone as a few others have confirmed this discovery as well. I don't understand the point in setting your own brightness when the tablet will still adjust itself with auto shut off. I hope a fix of some sort will come soon.
I have not noticed any change in brightness levels with auto brightness turned off.
It reminds me a bit of the brightness/contrast adaptation my SGS2 does -- only there it can be toggled under the display settings, whereas on the TF700 you're just stuck with it.
I don't think that the screen is actually changing brightness - just that the backlight is adjusting as needed depending on how much bright/dim colors are on the screen...
What's strange is that if I enable auto-brightness (which works great in the bright office), that effect seems to go away... Very strange...
I'm assuming that it's a battery-saving thing, but I'm really not sure...

I actually watched this happen (without auto brightness on) without transitioning to a new screen while scrolling past a dark image on a light forum thread. I think it's a tegra 3 thing. I know I read about t3 dynamically adjusting the backlight during video playback and saving more energy in the process than the t3 soc itself consumes during playback.
I've been using mine on power save mode so far. I'm betting the brightness changes would be more fluid and less noticeable at higher speeds.
Read your user manuals. It discusses the feature in its entirety.:good:

So that's probably your answer,
You running on maximum power saving mode. What you expect?
You asking tablet to save all power it can, and that's exactly what's it's doing.
Of course there's a chance of defect, hardware it software. But that could only be tested on a group of other tablets using same settings, to try to recreate what you describing.

I've noticed the same, as well as a few other users, we actually had a (sub)thread about this a few days ago here.
This is in fact very similar (or equal) to dynamic contrast we all know from LCD screens. Unfortunately I do not know the solution, but setting the brightness to as low as I need in any given lighting conditions helps.

What's up with auto-brightness on Android devices?

I don't think it's been usable (auto-brightness) on any Android device I've owned. Typically, in a home setting, it simply sets the brightness to the lowest setting, which is way too dim. Why can't they implement a "customizable" auto-brightness so that it's actually usable???
Does anyone else have any better luck with Auto-brightness on Android devices??
Actually, I *do* have one Android device where it works properly - my HTC EVO V 4G.
Yes, I know there are apps in the Market but they always seems overly-complicated. I just want a simple brightness slider that can adjust the auto-brightness, like on iOS devices (was trying to avoid mentioning that, but it's the best way to describe what I'm looking for).
Anyone know of a way to customize the auto-brightness level without a 3rd party app?
Thanks for listening while I vent!

In the case of the TF700 I found that switching on the Super IPS+ while in auto brightness mode makes it usable. I totally agree with your point, adjustable would be nice. The TF700 is the worst I've seen. Even in fairly brightly lit rooms mine turns the brightness all the way down.
The only device I have been able to leave autobrightness on is with the Galaxy Nexus. However, I am noticing constant adjustments in brightness on the Infinity, even with autobrightness turned off. Are you guys experiencing the same thing?

I have purchased Lux and it does work, but I just wish it were as simple as a single slider to adjust the auto-brightness - Lux is overly complicated (in my opinion).... You must have better luck than I - I found myself having to constantly add new "levels" to make the brightness adjust properly for the current lighting - it was never as automatic as I had assumed it would be.... THen i had issues where certain apps wouldn't install anymore and had to enable a special option to let me install apps again, etc - again, just not as simple as I had hoped...

My auto-brightness works great in bright envs. But at home in normal lighting, it sets the brightness all the way down (my TF101 did the same thing so I highly doubt it's a bad light sensor). It's un-usable. Of course, I want more - let me adjust it!

Lux and I bet there are other apps for this, has a debug mode that outputs what the sensor-api returns.
So get there or get such an app and try if the sensor readings are somewhat reasonable.
That method showed me my sensor has also a little problems with darker surroundings.
Sometimes it will get stuck at a low leven like 4 lux and not go down all the way to zero.

Video: Samsung seems to have introduced black clipping/crush with software

It seems to me that Samsung has screwed up the screen calibration inadvertently in their cluster-F of an OS. The S4 shows black clipping in images, gamma test charts, and videos, but I found some remnants of a more capable screen here!
http://youtu.be/V7T4rEQt27o
Seriously Samsung, don't give a crap if it gives somewhat better battery life, FIX THE DAMN THING! What's the point of releasing an FHD phone and having that black clipping and blue tint? At least leave an option to switch it on and off.
Will be fixed with custom kernels as with S3/Note 2, hopefully.
Noticed this last night while multitasking.
Kind of annoying, I do think its software related because my SystemUI crashed at one point, among other things, and it stopped happening.

Correct. Whereas before going from one screen to the other would cause a momentary jump in brightness, then a quick lowering of brightness by a noticeable but nearly insignificant degree - post a ton of errors/crashes, it stopped happening.
At one point the phone jumped a few notches in brightness (without my touching anything). And from then on out, all my screen swaps from light/dark, dark/light, different apps stopped having that ever-so-slight adjustment.
So it *seems* like it is an adjustment made on-the-fly of sorts, and I would really love to just be able to disable it...
This was a major problem in the OG Note and was never fixed.
Samsung needs to fix their screen because it's terrible compared to other phones. I can barely see the screen in daylight when I'm outside.
As an experienced Android and iPhone user, this phone is the biggest disappointment of my life. The lag is horrible and there are so many annoyances like the screen brightness changing all of a sudden (with auto brightness off). We need CM10

I can confirm that this happens in Netflix as well. If you pause on a scene with clipping, and hold down the menu button, the clipping goes away or atleast improves substantially, right before the Netflix app fades away.
There definitely seems to be something crippling the gamma across the OS
Is it me or am I the only one happy with the screen? It's not that bad in daylight as long as you bump up the brightness and you can adjust the color mode on the screen so it mimics the HTC One color saturation.
Also I don't notice any clipping, fault screen perhaps?
I leave auto brightness on all day I live in sunny Miami Florida and I see my phone perfectly outside. I never have any jump of brightness but in the settings menu I do get a little bit of this blue smearing and whites go a little darker but its minor not enough to make you annoyed. As far as is my understanding, either the screen smears on grey on black, or you have reddish blacks. Some might not notice it or care really

The smearing can be reduced by using the appear app Scream Adjuster and setting red green and blue to + 5 to +10 depending on how badly it smears.

can someone give me a specific example of where they're having problems?
I just ran the black/white/APL clipping patterns from AVSHD-709. Movie, Photo, and Standard all show no problems. Dynamic however, crushes blacks. Those who are having issues, are you all running Dynamic screen mode?
edit: upon further inspection, it would appear that 17 and 18 get clipped in movie/photo/standard. It's not perfect, and that's all this guy seems to be demonstrating, but I can't imagine a situation where any of you could be legitimately noticing it. It's well below 10% luminance. Just leaning back in your computer chair can clip that many shades of black or more on an LCD monitor. Just as an example; this would not show up on a calibration report, even if gamma was done in 5% steps instead of the typical 10%.
If any of you are really seeing crushed blacks, I would bet that you're using dynamic mode.

Then you need to exchange your phone. I got the 32GB on the 10th and installed the Titanium backup setup from my GS3 and the S4 destroys it in every way. Absolutely no lag, much better battery life, more natural screen saturation, although still oversaturated on the greens. I havent changed the default setting for the screen, which was set on adapt. I am a full time video editor and I just watched the Django trailer off the play store and it was flawless, blacks were crisp, no pixellation or overcrushed blacks and the brightness did not pulsate with changes in luminance from scene to scene. With auto brightness on in a dark room or fully lit room.
I do remember when I got the S3 with ICS stock how terrible the autobrightness was and terribly laggy camera was but after wither the JB update or custom ROMs, all that went away. But none of that exists on this 32GB one I have, so if you applied the latest update and you have the same probs then def get an exchange.
the black clipping is a known issue, and if you're still complaining about lag, swap your phone as everyone who's done that hasn't had any since. as for random brightness changes, noone's mentioned them since the ota
Got rid of the lag by switching launcher to nova and froze a lot of **** from AT&T and Samsung. It hasn't freeze ever since.
The smearing is present but only in the settings menu when I scroll up/down. Not a big deal but I hope it gets fixed.
Besides that the screen is gorgeous and have no complaints. Excellent battery life.

[Q] [TF700T] Adjusting color/gamma settings with CROMi-X 4.7.0

Hi guys, I'm new in this forum, and need your help!
I've flashed CROMi-X 4.7.0 on my TF700 and loved it, now its very responsive and fast. My Asus always had a issue about the display colors. The white colors looks yellowish, causing the most impacting on videos, making them looks darker than should be.
I don't know if its a problem with my device but I don't have a choice for Asus repairs because I live in Brazil and the TF700 was not released here.
Knowing this problem I always used Screen Adjuster app to correct the Blue color and looked better, but I didn't noticed any performance issue with it because my tablet was sluggish all the time.
With CROMi-X I noticed the performance issues with Screen Adjuster. When enabled, the navigation became slightly slower.
I tried other apps for correcting colors but they all have this same problem.
I wanna ask you guys if you know a way for me to correct the colors in a way that don't affect performance.
Thanks in advance and sorry for my english.
Some of the more knowledgeable people around here may be able to shed some more light on the situation, but from what i understand it isn't possible to adjust those things with the tegra3 chip. I know this was a problem with the Nexus 7 and the kernel devs all said it was due to the tegra3. I would assume it is the same here.

I'd assume it's possible to load a gamma ramp into the display controller, but I don't know how.

Imo all the display 'configuration' apps incur a hit on the infinity. Be it, gamma adjusters, notification bar hiders or colour enhancers. The extra layer that is basically interpreting what should be displayed seems to cause performance issues.

Not if you program the hardware LUT directly. I found the relevant registers in the Tegra DRM, and there appears to be an ioctl in the kernel to set it (TEGRA_DC_EXT_SET_LUT). I didn't research yet how to do this from usermode.
After being spoilt by my GS4 etc I'd love the ability to change these settings
