[Q] What are your major issues? Sending to an Asus tech

Guys, I've been talking to Hai one of the techs at Asus US for the transformer. He knows I'm on xda a lot and thought I could be a huge resource for him to discover the most common issues people are having with their transformers. He knows a lot of us are power users and wants to help out xda'era as much as he can. So reply to this thread with any issues you are having and I will report back to him the most common of the issues. I also *****ed about how little their call center knew. My initial email to him actually spurred a meeting internally on how they can better train the techs in the call center (which he told me is in Jamaica)

I just gave you a thanks for helping to promote & solidify Asus's relationship with this community! If Asus can keep this behavior up, their products will continue to fly off the shelves, such personal support is unheard of it seems in an android world where cell phone & now tablet owners wait forever for updates and help.

screen flickering when playing via HDMI out,
resolution only 720 p.

My issues
1) The speakers and sound playback on this device is lousy. The right speaker is louder than the left. The overall music playback is of low fidelity and low volume.
2) Touch screen doesn't register clicks religiously. I can reproduce this on any damn browser, on the XDA forum home page consistently.
3) Asus keyboard is very very slow. Instantly switched to the Android one
4) Browsing and multi touch is not smooth on the default browser. Its better on Opera n Firefox though.
Issues related to YT playback are known and hopefully will be fixed with 3.1. Also, it would be nice to know when 3.1 would be available for TF.
P.S Please let your friend in Asus know that people are really freaked out by the length of the damn charging cable Asus offered

I got 4 times the screen goes black and could not turn it back on. I havd to do force shut down then it turned on

Battery performance in standby is poor if wifi is set to stay on when the screen turns off. This is unlike the Xoom, which gets equivalent standby performance (<.5%/hour burn rate) whether wifi is set to stay on or turn off when the screen turns off.
My guess is that the TF's wifi is not going into a sleep mode when the screen turns off and thus burns excessive battery life. The difference is <.5%/hour if wifi is set to turn off and >3.5%/hour if wifi is set to stay on.
Again, note that the Xoom does NOT exhibit this behavior, and that my Xoom and my TF are both running (mostly) identical apps, email syncing, etc. The only difference between them is the Asus apps that run in the background, but I've run tests with those shut off and they're not the cause of the difference.

Watching vids on the Youtube app lags so frequently it's unusable to me. This is on the latest update.

Sent mine in due to significant light bleeding around 3 sides. Seems to be a bit of a problem for ASUS, if this website is any indication.

Well here's a little list you can send. Can't comment on the support staff issues as I've not had to ring them myself.
Things needing to be fixed:
Tablet:
Speaker balance still off. (louder in right speaker on some devices)
Wifi model still displays 'mobile network signal' battery use bar even though no GSM/CDMA/HSPA chip exists.
Notable video camera 'screen delay'.
MyZine FC issue.
MyCloud settings icon does nothing.
Browser intermittent FC's.
Slow default browser page refresh rate, resulting in occasional artifacting.
Home screen 'bounceback' issue.
Tapping 'Install' in the market sometimes opens a random app.
Sometimes the device doesn't wake from standby, when using the default lock screen. There seems to be various forms of this bug. >Some possible fixes to get around this bug include: do a forced power off (10-12sec power button hold). Wait 30 secs. Then turn on as normal (5-6sec power button hold). Then just turn off the lock screen in the settings; Remove all Asus widgets from the home screen<
Battery usage data not showing proper list.
Parts of touchscreen unresponsive at times. - no known cause
MyLibrary app closes itself when corrupt/not compatible files found. (Asus developer feedback on this HERE)
HDMI only outputs at 720p. Possible flickering screen issues.
Speaker 'pop' issue. After a period of inactivity with the speakers, and then suddenly they are required to play a sound, a small pop is heard, before the rest of the audio plays properly.
Dock:
Drains its battery even if nothing is plugged into it.
Tablet disconnects from dock at random times.
No way to tell the level of internal battery.
While plugged into the tablet, and in standby mode, the battery drains fast.

I just sent the following e-mail to an Asus Tech earlier....let's see what they have to say.
was one of the lucky people to be able to order and receive a new Transformer last week. However, I have noticed some issues that I am currently worried about and I hope that someone can address for me. Some of them are product quality issues, while others are technical issues. Any information or feedback that can be provided about any of them is greatly appreciated.
1) When I power the device on, there seems to be a crackle that comes from the speakers, perhaps caused by them receiving power. Is this normal behavior or something that I should be worried about with my speakers crackling or being blown in the future?
2) I notice that there are a lot of "creaking" like noises when the tablet is held in certain positions, is this normal?
3) My device would not power on earlier today, and it took multiple pushes of the power button, but after about 12 tries and holding it for over 40 seconds, it finally powered on, even though I never powered it off. Is this a known issue that will be addressed in the next software update?
4) This is more of a complaint than anything, but the charging cable provided with the device is extremely short. Can you offer any add on products that can increase the length?
5) I have read that a lot of people have had problems with dust underneath the screen. While I have yet to notice any dust underneath the screen, I do notice that on the top left and bottom left of my device, there is a somewhat large gap between the bezel and the screen itself, which could lead to dust problems in the future. The gap on the left is significant, while the gap on the right is non-existent. Is this a design issue with all of them, or have I just received a defective product?
All in all, what can Asus do for me in order to alleviate these problems that I have already encountered with the product? I have also just recently purchased the Keyboard Dock, which I have read various accounts online of it also having issues. Will these issues be addressed by Asus in the next firmware update? I have multiple Asus laptops, and this is my first Asus Tablet, and although I was very excited for this product, there seems to be a lot of problems being encountered with it...

About the sound not being even, he knows about that. That's why he rma'ed mine. While a lot of people think it's a sw issue he isn't sure. Hence why he wanted mine asap to troubleshoot it since none of the units in the office do this. He thinks it could have been something with a batch of them if of is hw. He also knows about screen bleed. So keep them coming and at the end of the week I will email him.

not a huge issue in the scheme of things but offering the Transformer & dock in a choice of colors would be awesome. The brown/bronze thing happening here really doesn't show the device off to it's best advantage.
I took my setup to work, everybody thought it worked beautifully but several commented on the fact that they thought the color is unattractive and asked if
it came in anything different.

Did you show it to your lady friends?
Personally, I love the bronze finish. Kinda tired of looking at everything black n white

Photographs do not display as well as they should; colors are muted and they do not look as sharp as they do on my PC monitor. I have tried a couple different apps but they all display the same and given the great screen on the TF this is definitely not acceptable.

Current owners of Triumph or perspective buys who are trying to cut through all the trolls, flame wars, useless and/or misleading information from the (many) other threads, to find out what or if anything was wrong with their phone, how to identify these problems and most importantly, how to make intelligent decisions on whether to return or exchange before the 30 days run out.
Who should stop now and go read a book instead:
People who have (or think they have) perfect phones and feels it’s necessary to defend the Triumph’s honor at any mentioning of a problem. People who believes everybody else is clueless therefore it’s necessary to advertise basic settings changes as cure-alls (i.e. enable “use wireless networks,” it will fix your GPS problems). please give others more credit than that. And last but not least, people who hate the T and thinks it’s just the worst phone ever made… you have no reason to stay here.
Still with me? Good…
I have personally owned two T’s. the first one had several problems that I ended up returning, the second one was much better but not problem free. I also have access to two other T’s owned by friends. Everything I post here are based on facts that I have personally observed, not second-hand info or hear-say.
** GPS problem:
First of all, Google Map does NOT depend on GPS. Being able to see your location on the map means NOTHING when it comes to GPS location. In order to test if you have a GPS problem you have to either use an app like GPS Test or start Google Navigation. All tests should be done outdoors under open sky and while you have a valid data connection (for A-GPS data download). The GPS should lock-in within 2 minutes or less (Google Navigation should start showing your real time location as a blue arrow and start giving you turn by turn instructions).
A few minutes after a gps lock, you should have a location accurate to within 15ft or less. If google nav consistently shows a visible blue circle (of any size) around your current location, then it is unable to give you an accurate location lock, it is a problem.
If you have any problem at all with GPS lock or location accuracy, your phone has a broken GPS. Take it back for an exchange! Do not listen to people saying that you could fix it by running some magical software or do a special gps dance. You are wasting your time. If it wasn’t broken in the first place then you would have no need for those “fixes.” My first phone had an almost unusable GPS, the replacement and both of my friend’s phones have no problem whatsoever. Using GPS Test app, I was able to clearly see how the satellite signal levels were 30-50% lower on the previous T when compared to my OV, while the replacement had levels that are comparable to the OV.
** Data disconnect and/or drop to 1x when GPS is turned on.
I did not notice this behavior on any of the 4 Triumph I tested on. GPS and wireless signal can not interfere with each other, so if this happens consistently and is making data connection unstable or GPS lock problematic then there’s most likely a hardware problem. the phone should be exchanged.
** Screen flicker, white out, color cast:
If your screen ever turns white completely, or has a VERY heavy color cast, the answer is obvious, get it exchanged. meanwhile, all Triumph’s screen have overall “cooler” color when compared to my V. there were slight variations between each phone but as long as it was not extreme (i.e. making white look blue and red look purple) it should not be considered a problem. Just make sure you have removed the top layer screen protector before making a judgement.
slight screen flicker while turning on/off the phone repeatedly might not be worth an exchange for that reason alone. My first phone and one of my friend’s phone had the flickers, while my replacement and the other friend’s phone did not. The slight flicker did not both me or my friends at all.
**screen protectors:
Yes, there are two screen protectors. No, there’s absolutely no reason to keep the top layer. The second layer is very well applied and I doubt it’s meant to be taken off. You will never be able to apply another protector as well as that. If you have screen sensitivity issues, I’d suggest exchanging the phone rather than taking off that second layer of protector. None of the 4 phones I tried had any sensitivity issue with the protector attached. If you had to take it off then your phone has a problem.
** visible touch screen sensor elements:
If you can see “dots” on the screen under normal use, you are seeing the sensor elements embedded in between glass players. You should NOT be able to see them in any way during normal use. Exchange the phone if you do. it was a known LCD panels manufacturing problem on some earlier phones (mostly HTC). None of the Triumph I have seen had that problem.
** Signal level:
All four of the Triumphs had lower signal dbm numbers when compared to my OV. However, with my borderline coverage (-105dbm at home and -110dbm in the office), I had not experienced any drop calls on the T. Data connections were marginal but no worse than the OV. Do not make any decision based on dBm numbers alone. dbm is a relative value and do not mean what a lot of people seemed to think it means. In any case, exchanging the phone is not going to help in any way.
** WIFI disconnect:
I have not run into this with Triumph however, I had similar issue running AOSP rom on my OV while having no problem with other roms. This is likely something caused by the combination of router and phone software. My suggestion would be to try as many different routers as you can also try router settings such as G vs N, WEP vs WPA, hidden vs broadcast… if you have same problem everywhere then by all means try an exchange, I doubt it would help however.
** Touch button in sensitivity:
This happens randomly on all the T I have tested. It is likely a software problem that will not be fixed by exchanging the phone.
** Camera clicking while focusing:
All 4 phones had slight clicking noise while focusing but none had trouble actually gaining a focus. Exchange if you can’t get it to focus at all. the clicking seems to be normal however.
** Camera color cast:
None of the phones I have tried had problem with “green/blue color cast in the middle of the screen” as some have reported. If you have already removed the green screen protector on the camera itself then you probably have a real problem and should exchange the phone. just check your expectations – cell phone cameras have cheap plastic little fish eye lenses. Don’t expect results like your Canon or Nikon.
** phone stops charging while on:
I noticed two things: 1. some micro-usb chargers such as the one that came with OV would at times refuse to charge while the phone was turned on. Unplugging a couple of times may fix it. I haven’t had problem with stock T charger or the charger that came with my BlackBerry. 2. The charger will shut off once the phone temperature reaches 42c. this is most noticeable while in a hot car with phone on the dashboard. This is normal and is the result of an (over)sensitive overcharge protection.
** light leakage around bottom edges:
All the phones I have tired had various degrees of light leakage. It is consistent with problems reported on other versions of the same phone released earlier. the leakage was only visible in relative darkness so personally I did not think it was worth worrying about.
** Mismatched MEID:
To check your phone’s MEID, go to settings-> about phone -> status. The MEID should be an 18 digit number matching the stickers on the box, outside of the battery door and behind the battery on the back of the phone. Both of my phones had mismatched MEID. The phone itself was showing a 17 digit number while the stickers all have 18 digit numbers. an 0 in the middle is missing on the phones. One person (VM rep?) in an earlier thread had said VM was aware that 3,000 phones had this MEID mismatch so it seemed to be a known problem.
Some people have reported trouble using Google Voice on phones with mis-matched MEID. I have not been able to verify that myself.
** software version 38 vs 39:
Both of my Triumphs had version 38 software. the previous one had horrible GPS and some screen flickering while the replacement did not. There were also some obvious software differences between the two phones, despite the same software version. The replacement phone camera default to 5mp, while the previous one default to VGA resolution. The previous phone gallery had four random pictures referencing some Chinese websites (seemed to be leftover web cache). These pictures were in the ROM and did not go away after hard reset. The replacement phone had an empty gallery. One of my friend’s Triumph came with v.39 software which also had some screen flickers.
By itself, the software version did not indicate a good or bad phone. test everything!
The main thing to keep in mind is that there are many reported problems, not all of them were all that crucial. Given the obvious inconsistencies in build quality, it is a real possibility that the exchange would turns out to be much worse than the original phone. you really have to look long and hard at each problem and make an educated decision for yourself. Meanwhile, there’s absolutely no reason to put up with major things like a broken LCD or gps or insensitive touch screen. Take it back to the store!
This list was put together over several days, mostly as notes to myself. So please excuse me if it rambles a bit. Let me know if there’s something else you would like me to check.

I never even realized the 2 screen protectors but sure enough, they are there. As far as the light issues at the bottom of the screen, I definitely see it on mine as well.

Another issue I just found out Im having is with my bluetooth. I have a Jawbone Icon and the sound seems overloaded. When I connect my older motorola BT headset to it, it works fine. Strange indeed!

My 30 day return period ends this weekend so I have to make a decision. GPS is really the only problem I have, and it is intermittent. I was hoping a software fix would come out so i wouldn't have to worry about exchanging.

As far as my bluetooth issues with the sound overpowering, I actually just bit the bullet and bought the a MOTO BT today to see how it would work. No issues. Fishy...

my biggest problem is that i cant seem to be able to stream music properly in google music. does everyone have this problem or should i exchange?
I even had full bars yesterday, and it was barely sputtering out any music.

I doubt that is a hardware issue. Probably a result of VM's network. Try running a speed test app and see what kind of speeds you are getting. I prefer "Open Signal."

the speeds i got on all the tests were all drastically different. I say an average of about 350kbs...is that normal?

I want to buy my first tablet and I am looking for something with 9-10 inches screen and sure android based. So far I decided that the Asus Transformer TF700 is the answer for me (the 32 GB version) I am wondering whether there are other potential good tablets with the same price tag or this is the best one can get in this price range.

Right now I would wait if I could reconsider. See if nexus coming with a bigger tablet.

I would buy it again. We've got some great ICS and Jelly Bean custom roms (some are a work in process, but almost there--good enough to be my daily driver) and the official JB update is coming soon. I guess ASUS quality assurance leaves something to be desired, but my tablet and dock are great and I'm very happy with the Infinity.

2 weeks in to owning it and i would buy it again. I have not noticed any physical problems with my device.
I kinda wish i would have tried a 7" so that it was easier to carry around at times. I still think that I would want to have this device in the end. I love the I/O connections(kinda slow) but very helpful when I am shooting video with a bunch of GoPros outdoors. Now i don't have a carry a full sized laptop just to manage the files.

Sadly, I returned my third TF700 back to Amazon yesterday. Between the loosely mounted screen, the poor wifi reception (despite being a few feet from the router) and the multiple-times-per-day reboots due to icon disappearances and crashes, I couldn't justify keeping it.
With that said, I have every intention of buying it again once JB is officially released for it. The tablet display is gorgeous and I love the overall weight and form factor. I could have lived with the slight display mounting issue but I couldn't get around how laggy and crash-prone it was.
I have JB on my Galaxy Nexus and the performance is stellar and given what I've read from TF700 owners who have added a custom JB ROM to their tablets, I am confident that once an official ASUS build is released, most/all of the software problems will be resolved. Right?

I'd buy again.
Probably try to get a champagne one and 64gb...of course the money would be more.
I really want to get another Acer A700 because the price tag on that tab is steadily dropping.

It's looking good. We're just at the beginning of that road, but there's a lot that can be done. Better luck next time!

As it stands right now, I suggest you should hold on to your money, Asus tf700 is a big disappointment for me. I was so excited about this table, and now NO ONE in my family wants to use it. The only thing good about this table is the high resolution screen, but maybe this's the issue, the O/S is not optimized for this kind of resolution? who knows? Anyway If you really like this table, wait until they released Jelly Been and check back to this forum to see it indeed Jelly Bean will addressed all the issues. Don't listen to the people that claimed they love their tables, maybe a few out there claimed that have a perfect one? but the odds will go against you. Not worth 600$ the way it works right now.

I'd buy again -- love the connectivity, love the screen -- lots of storage space. Furthermore, I have few issues with mine, and the keyboard dock is the absolute hammer for me -- typing and an extra battery. Seals the deal!

I would still buy it also.
There are only four things that annoy me so far:
- It takes a few seconds for the keyboard to initialize, so you have to wait a few seconds with enter the code
- Tegra 3 seems to have a little strugle with handling 1920x1200, especially compared with CM10 (JB) on my Galaxy S2
- Android interface, especially in 3rd party apps is not yet tailored to use with a keyboard
- USB and SD going in to sleep together with the system, so I cannot charge my phone via micro-USB and it has to re-initialize SD every time (I like to have a setting for this)
Judging on what an improvement going from ICS to JB (CM9 --> CM10) made for my SGS2 I expect most of these issues to be resolved in the future with updated software, so I'm not woried.
What I absolutely love:
- The size as a small laptop and the detachable 'screen', and using the touchscreen (it draws attention when commuting in the train ), the aways-on just like a phone
- That it doesn't get hot - at all (unlike my Galaxy S2)
- Brightness of the screen, and it's resolution
- The good battery life when used in conjuction with the dock (which is how I use it 95% of the time)

I really don't like saying this because I have had very good results with Asus products I have purchased over the years. I would, buy a Samsung or a Toshiba. I am thinking about returning it again and just doing this and having it over with once and for all. I know they aren't as nice as the Asus but I sit here everyday and watch my wife do everything SHE wants to do on her Toshiba AT105-T1032 while she simultaneously laughs at me plodding along on my quad core super tablet. Opps, gotta go now she wants to see who's will boot up first from power off. I loose everytime, man I'm getting tired of doing the dishes every night

FYI - there is a "solution" to problems 1 & 4: If you want to be able to use the keyboard instantly after turning in on and keep your USB port on the dock active when the TF700 is in standby, you can do that by disabling the "Mobile Dock Battery Saving" mode in Settings->Asus customized settings. Just make sure you back out of the settings screen in order to make the setting "take effect". This will also allow you to wake your TF700 with the keyboard dock (instead of using the power button).
The downside is that your TF700 will never enter "deep sleep", so your battery will drain faster in standby mode...
I just tested this and was able to charge my Nexus 7 from from TF700, even in standby mode.
So, there already is a setting for this....
Regarding the keyboard, I've yet to have any issues with the keyboard in third party apps - could you please elaborate?

I love my infinity, the keyboard dock is just what i wanted
The IO issues of tegra3, poor Asus customer support, Bad warrenty coverage (everything is CID), and high fail rate make me sad tho...
Would i buy another one? Not likely. I'd prolly stick with the galaxy tab 2, Samsung may not update as quickly howeverits very easy to flash custom kernels and roms and loooots of options there.
If only we could get the Asus tablet with Samsung level QA and workmanship. Lots of people bash how "plastic" Sammy devices feel but i have yet to have one fall apart on me

Yeah, I think that Asus was more concerned with form over function with the TF700 - they were so worried about being the thinnest and lightest tablet (along with being nice looking) that they were just too hard to actually build!
We'll see how things go in the future, especially with Jelly Bean, but I just get the feeling that the TF700 isn't going to stand the test of time. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

Had my TF700 64gb 5 weeks and yes would buy again, very good screen as I use outdoors mostly in very bright light 7inch would just not be big enough for me. Had the occassional reboot but so much better with a cold reboot once a week thanks to the advice on this forum.
No loose screen or noticable light bleed, wifi connection in comparison with my Samsung Gio is just as good if not a little better.
I did not buy the model with the keyboard dock as it was not available at the time of purchase and still a little nervouse about getting one due to the screen crack issue but have invested in the Anker Archos3 battery which is great if you are out for a full day and need that extra bit of battery power.
This is my first tablet but have used an android phone before, did not want to go down the Apple route seems to be more of a fashionable item to buy going back to the ipod days and that sort of thing always puts me off.
There are always going to be problems with an early adoption of any device so far I am a happy user.

Regarding the keyboard, I've yet to have any issues with the keyboard in third party apps - could you please elaborate?

Actually that was one of the first things I did Because I use my tranformer as a PC replacement. I didn't want to push the unlock button every time. The SD-card still powers off in this mode when the screen is of and there is the delay when typing in in a password or code from the keyboard.
I've btw done a lot of optimizing by now on the stock rom -for which you need root access - Disabled a great bunch of programs, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1897099. Also I now disabled some more programs, replaced the stock launcher with a lightweight alternative (Holo launcher HD), and replaced all media related programs (Gallery, Google Play Music, Videoplayer) with lightweight alternatives (Quickgallery, Clean player, BSplayer which serves as a youtube substitute as well). This allows you to disable the media storage process alltogether. This appears to take a great load of the Infinity's shoulders and it now is starting the feel and behave like a state-of-the-art PC system in terms of speed and input response BTW Office Suite let's you use the cursor keys and shift keys in it's spreadsheet editor and is not laggy unlike it's competitors when using this input method (Quickoffice, for which I still had a licence and Polaris which is preinstalled). Also Dolphin Browser beta is not laggy when typing from the keyboard like Firefox Beta, next to that it allows you to use the scroll wheel on a external mouse and seems to perform better on a optimized system than FF beta (which was my prefered solution when I still had my system less optimized).

Hmm, I'm a little confused now - the OP stated that your USB port won't charge your phone, yet you say that you have already disabled the "Mobile Dock Power Save Mode"? Or are you saying that you disabled that *after* posting the original post? Like I said, even in standby, I can still charge USB devices with that mode disabled...

In my situation:
- Screen on: It charges my phone over microusb
- Screen of: nope
Also a sd-card in the docking station is remounted every time the screen goes on.
Mobile battery switching mode is de-selected.
When it's enabled the keyboard can also not wake the tablet, have to use the power button on the tablet itself then.

Strange - that's how mine acted before disabling the mobile dock battery saving mode, but after disabling it,my tablet will continue to change my devices even when screen is off and I can wake my table my simply touching the trackpad (even if it's disabled). You may want to try enabling and re-disabling the battery saving mode, making sure to exit setting after each change....

Versus TouchTab 8DC Review : Do not buy

The tablet it'self is initially impressive. The textured back gives a nice grippy feel and overall impressions are that it's a good value-for-money tablet.
Jelly bean / 16GB storage / 1GB ram / IPS screen / Mini-SD / Mini-HDMI / Google Play Store
A few bits of bloatware - Angry birds etc. But basically stock Jelly bean
For £139 its seems quite reasonable.
However, after a few days the screen had failed, so back to Currys it went.
Then it went again. This time I worked out what the problem is. You can turn the brightness of the screen down to pitch black. When in this state you cannot then make the screen bright again. It's effectively useless.
I was talked through re-flashing the device by versus and it worked again.
I contacted them again to ask how this bug was going to be fixed - There doesnt seem to be an OTA updater for jelly bean (you have to use a USB cable and RockChip flashtool) and I was told
"The option to reduce the brightness down to zero is not a fault its an option. As long as you don't reduce the brightness to zero you should be fine"
This is totally unacceptable for any tablet, budget or not. It's not an "option" to disable your tablet. It's an outright bug.
Since then I have found the tablet in this state, without me touching the brightness, three times. So there is obviously something else which sets the brightness to zero.
TL : DR
Do not buy! It has a bug which disables the tablet, which Versus refuse to admit is a bug.

Sorry this is not a bug and can be easily reset if set to low. It was also solved with a ota update that it also can do when you state it can not. This was a very unfair post. Posted this a bit late though but people should know this was an unfair post!

Firstly, there was no easy way to reset this. You HAD to reflash to reset.
Secondly, at the time of writing there was no firmware that fixed this issue.
Lastly, at the time of writing there was no OTA. There was not even a "Check for updates" in the settings. When this bug was reported, it had to be done via a download from Versus and connecting up via USB cable. Maybe the update included an OTA option. /Shrugs
If it "wasn't a bug" why did they fix it? BTW, I was probably the very first person in the UK to install this fix.

Android 4.4.2 Improvements...?

Hi. I want to buy the new Nexus 5 from Google/LG and i want to ask about the Android 4.4.2 update.
I have read that there were issues (again similar to the Nexus 4) that there were occasional wifi signal dropouts, weak speakers, screen quality and the camera.
Has these problems been resolved with the update?

The sound of the speaker is average! It's a hardware thing, no software update can change it.. If you want some boost, you will need to root it and install a sound mod like Viper4android...
No wifi signal dropouts here. Whaatttttt??? The screen on this beast is a real BEAUT!
The camera is pretty good and can manage decent shots.

Never had wifi problem, speaker is easily fixed and they addressed it in 4.4.2, my screen is perfect, and my camera is perfect.

As i have mentioned in my other thread i'm not into modding or rooting as for me its too technical and i would rather air my complaints (and suggestions) to Google et al and wait for the official updates be it minor or major.
This is my 2nd-ever Nexus phone. The other one being the Nexus 4 and i didn't like it as there were just too many issues and problems hardware-wide and also software.
I would like to give this phone a chance and i hope the unit i got from Carphone Warehouse is free from hardware "abnormalities" and problems as they don't offer refunds anymore and only just exchange.
I heard after the 4.4.2 update there were still issues with the camera like it tends to over compensate or over saturate in some instances. The contrast algorithim (or whatever they call it) was tweaked but somewhat of a hit n' miss depending on the time of the day. True?
Also, how's is the shutter lag? (i.e. in-between shots) Is it a lot faster now than the N4? My old Galaxy S3 and my current iPhone 5C has an almost zero shutter lag which will benefit me.

Rooting and stuff is not technical at all, it requires little to no knowledge. Just read the guide threads..

My belief is that if i mod or root a device the warranty will be void and that i cannot "un-root" it again. My other worry is the rooting procedure might introduce bugs or even viruses. That's my belief. Again, i could be wrong.
I still would go to the normal route i.e. waiting for official updates based on end-user comments/complaints/issues/suggestions which i do every now and again till Google and those other OEM's realise things.

As for viruses and bugs, it's not the root that can cause that but more what you will do after rooting your device... There is no bug, at least no more than a non rooted device, with only rooting your device. It's only if you modify some files system, flash something not stable, or the wrong file and so on. If you install a "crappy" or cracked app with root access (and allow it without know what it does), yes maybe you can encounter some bugs or viruses. It's on the user side...

I have not rooted my phone and it's perfect, i have no complaints whatsoever. I keep refraining myself from rooting tho because of gravitybox, my geeky side keeps telling me to root but i don't right now because i don't need it, but i will definitely do it after a year or something (knowing myself).

When using Fastboot and ADB its commands so there is no chance of bugs or viruses.modding is what XDA is all about.

I could maybe try rooting my device one day. But until then i'm happy with normal updates.

I used my N5 for a week, stock and unrooted. I had absolutely no problems with it. I got used to the screen after a day and never really complained about it. I even think it's the best screen so far, especially outdoors. Zero wifi signal drops. My phone speakers wake me up using the alarm clock. Camera can produce excellent photos; take a look inside the picture thread. It's really just the feature-itch that kept me flashing custom roms.

I have been hearing somewhat conflicting comments that the 4.4.2 camera still has more space for improvements. It can sometimes bring oversaturatedness, greyness, haziness and still weak in the low-light department.
Another issue i heard is the battery seems still not convincingly and dramatically improved from the last time. 3G & 4G signal seems also not perfect. What i mean is if the phone comes from a 3G to a 4G area the phone either reboots itself, turns itself off or would take time to "reconfigure" its software to know that its in a strong 4G signal. Am i making sense?
Is there any truth to this?

Still somewhat not convinced. There are still some known issues with 4.4.2 i heard. I'm not too worried about the camera as i believe it is much improved but my other main concern is the battery life.
Some are saying that the "Android system" (or the OS) is the culprit. I'm not an engineer but is it because of maybe the way the OS works or something. I also heard that there are random wifi crashes, phone just turns off by itself and when the phone is actually asleep it drains a lot and then the battery heats up, etc.
I'm sorry to be bringing this issues up buy you hear and read this online and it seems credible. If more than 1 person have been complaining the same thing surely there is truth to the issue.

In my opinion stop the "I heard someone" or "some are saying" and jump the train...
4.4.2 is way better than 4.4/4.4.1 (and yes I ran stock rom in the past ).
About Android usage in battery stats is already discussed here, I mean in this Q&A forum, I have not it, like almost 90% (or more) users, it's on the user side (whatever some other users tends to think). It can happen on 4.4/4.4.1 too... but since a minority of users are still on this version and the updates have been quick, nobody still speak about it.
Wi-Fi crashes, phone turn OFF by itself (on full stock?) it's also a very large minority on stock (I would say never), it could be due to the user too, no?
High battery drain in idle-> mostly user side (rogue app for example). Ans so on...
Don't mixe what your read about some problems between stock rom and custom rom/kernel/mods...., in my opinion (and I'm not alone) all you read is nothing, biased feedback due to some users who don't know how use their phones, install xx and xy apps and after that they are complaining about battery life, bugs and so on
Battery heat (or CPU?), what is heat for you or for the guy who said that? I any case there is thermal throttle to prevent any dammage and you are running a quadcore CPU (with a max CPU freq at 2,26 GHz ) enclosed without thermal cooling so in certain circumstances expect some heat...
If you are not still convinced, hum... don't do anything
Test and see by yourself, sometimes it will be better than read something here and there... . I'm not saying that you are "reported" is false but nonestly it's mostly ******, at least like I said it's not about 4.4.2 itself but user side.
That being said you seem a user easily influenced by some things read or heard here and there, maybe you'll be more influenced by the replies in your thread

I have not experienced any of these issues when I was on stock for a week. I suggest you go buy the nexus 5 and return it if you don't like it then try the G2 if you really want amazing battery life. But I assure you, once you experience Nexus, you'll go back to Nexus.

Well, for one thing i had a Nexus 4 and i had to return/sell it because of so many issues. And those same issues have again cropped-up in the stock Nexus 5 4.4/4.4.1/4.4.2. Sounds familiar?
Yes it's true it "could be" a minority who have the same issues but its STILL a minority and its STILL the same issues. It's either the users fault or the phone itself. Yes it could be malicious/battery-draining apps or a ROM that has some bugs, etc. But in the past 6 months i have not heard of a "minority" of HTC One or Galaxy S3/S4 users that have the same issues. Have you? It does tell you something about how the phone was made and how Google pushes its updates.
I know and i'm well aware that the only thing to do is to actually try one. But what if if i try one, got the same problems, do a factory reset, still same problems, have to return/sell the thing and so on. Its such a hassle. That is why i am looking for answers and reviews/comments here. And i truly appreciate all your insights. I really do.
Call me fuzzy or overly-careful. I'm not looking for a "perfect" Google Nexus phone. I just want a phone (and Android phone as such) that works.
Again, as i said i'm not overly worried about the camera because a phone camera can & will never replace a proper one.My other concern is the 4.4.2 battery life. My Nexus 4's battery life was near atrocious. Could not tell you how long (or short) it's battery life is thats is why i got rid of it. But if a number of issues come up with the same battery life issue and battery getting warmer then am i to worry?
My typical day is get up at 6AM, remove the charger on my phone (if it was charged overnight), turn it off or turn the wifi off whilst i have my shower, get on the bus and the train, turn on my mobile data then checking the morning news/weather/notes/Twitter, get on to my work and keep my mobile data (and everything else like wifi, bluetooth, NFC...you know) turned off, turn on my data again for my 30-minute lunch and turn it off when back to my afternoon shift, going back home i listen to some music (a typical journey lasts around 45 minutes) whilst at the same time checking out some tech news on Appy Geek, when i'm at home i turn off my mobile data and connect to my home wifi (kept On till until i wake up again the next morning) whilst in-between supper & shower & bed i check Twiiter again, Instagram, couple of Youtube videos, email, playing a game which would last maybe 30-60 minutes max and that's it. I sleep around 11PM and wake up again around 6AM.
My questions are:
1. Anything to worry about the battery life?
2. Is it wise to install a "battery saving" app on the Play store?
3. Will heat be a factor on my "typical" day on draining my battery life?
4. Is it true the battery life improves after a couple of charges?
The area where i live, where i travel and my work place hasn't got a strong 4G signal. I have no problems with my home broadband/wifi as i typically have a very fast and stable connection. So...
5. Will the phone picking up 3G & 4G signal (switching back & forth and re-initializing again and again) be a factor in a battery drain?
6. What tips can you advice me on how to save battery life on my Nexus 5?

Based on how you use your phone, not really. Unless there's a hardware defect.

For me, no. I once tried one and it didn't help at all. But there's no harm in trying.

A few weeks ago I did some heavy gaming for an hour and the phone was really warm, but I still got >5hrs SoT at the end of the day before charging again.

Yes the battery life is somewhat improved; but what I experienced was that it improves when I stay in the same ROM for some days, and I charge it overnight when the battery is less than 5%.
5. Will the phone picking up 3G & 4G signal (switching back & forth and re-initializing again and again) be a factor in a battery drain?
In my opinion (and experience), yes.
6. What tips can you advice me on how to save battery life on my Nexus 5?
