If you haven't heard all ready Verizon is tracking down root users and limiting there data or fully suspending it so watch out. But we have to fight back against them by hiding Verizon from seeing that we are proudly rooted and some people have said the would sue Verizon. Please do whatever you can to fight against this.
Also motorola and htc are going to start doing the same.
Im not happy about this, if it is or going to happen but even if we root the device, carriers don't have to allow it on their service. After all we did modify the device and thats all they need to use agaianst us...

Regarding Tmo, yes they allow tethering for free, but throttle you after 5gb. So I'm not going to jump over there. I don't think rooting should be prevented, but it is understandable that vzw would want to stop unpaid tethering. Unlike Tmo they do charge extra for that.

Honestly, I think they should just make hotspot free after they start tiered plans. They'll get a their money either way.
But this move is something I can totally understand. Do I like it, no. It's a real shame how closed Android is becoming. I never thought we would get to this point, but this time next year, Android might not be open as we'd like it.
Only hope of keeping Android Android is the Nexus line. Hopefully Google starts to bring it to all carriers in a yearly fashion.

So I guess the question is, since the thunderbolt was htc most locked down phone to date, is if any of this root identifying software is located deep inside its code? I'm coming from sprint and the epic 4G and there was code hidden in there called carrier IQ that pretty much logged everything you did on the phone, your calls trxt, usage, whatever. Sounds alarming that it had that ability but what was weird is that even though it was running and functional the actual logging was turned off. I, and a lot of other people, wondered why this would be in a phone and after reading this im thinking sprint made samsung put it in there. So now I'm curious about what verizon asked htc to hide in the thunderbolt?

2 things. Verizon can see on there computer what software your on. So that right there will immediately through up a red flag. Another thing I'm kinda leaning toward Verizon on this one. For example when 4G hits my area. Verizon customers will increase. Doing so if my neighbor is tethering off his phone constantly then he's taking up all the bandwidth and my quality of service will depreciate. Now if he was capped and paying for tethering he would use it more conservative. I believe this is what Verizon is getting at. It's not about control , its about quality of network service for others.
There's probably no way to sue them bastards... It's their network and this is just a cap in data usage (like they haven't done that already.)

I brought this up with a few friends at Verizon (in various departments) yesterday, all had the same response .. a chuckle.

Nothing in Apache or GPLv2 prevents them from telling you how you can use your technology, or prevents them from locking down the device.

I dont have my TB yet, but i plan to root it and run Das BAMF, but not tether anything. Hopefully they dont just lump rooted phones together.

Hey lets pretend the article is 100% accurate which because P3Droid wrote it I would say has some possibility of being the case, as of this point verizon is not doing anything besides tracking. And no one knows when and if they will do anything else. Theirs a whole lot of what they can do, but besides having a legal and finance department, they also have a marketing department which wont let them unleash a PR nightmare. Taking 1/10 (which is what I believe the current agreed upon number of root users, i may be wrong with this figure) of your smartphone users and either canceling their contracts or killing service on their devices with threat of an ETF would probably amount to over 1 million users with root access being effected. It just wont happen that way, its not logical for them to do it, because with that many users effected it would be all over TV and such.
The only hope that you could sue them would be if they hit you with a ETF, which they probably wouldn't. Most likely their looking for people sharing wifi on their devices with 3rd party apps just like AT&T did and will tack on the mifi hotspot cost to your bill if you continue to do do, and say if you don't like it break your own contract.
If they were to all out attack everyone with root access I would really be shocked, specifically because they would have to most likely cancel everyone contract with no ETF and then users would just flock to sprint. Who regardless of what this article says probably wont follow suit, at least for a few years because of their market share and the Tmobile & at&t merger.
Again the end of this is just my two cents but the beginning is true VZ isnt doing anything besides information gathering at this point.
I work at Verizon. I can pull up basically everything you see on your about info. Including software.

You might be able to pull up the build finger print, or radio version, but those shouldn't differ. The fingerprints should stay consistent. You can't see that user123 is using RomX instead of stock.

I honestly really like this phone. It's fast, the screen is fine, the stock ROM isn't terrible, and there's hardware buttons. The screen honestly could have been a bit bigger, but it's not unpleasant to use at all. The camera is great as well.
I just wish there'd be a new phone that's 4"+ with a keyboard. A 5-row keyboard would be great.

ok, here is sort a dream: if Samsung would put the Sidekick 4G keyboard on the Galaxy S III! i would buy that SO fast! otherwise i just gotta wait and see what comes out i guess, there is nothing that i know of yet.
Tmobile did say the Sidekick line would continue, and if they could keep the great keyboard, AND bring up the other specs closer to a high-end device, i would get that.
I'm not a fan of QWERTY's honestly.
I only got this phone because it was a free upgrade from my MyTouch 4g which I got via a free upgrade from my G2
I only accepted the upgrade because its truly an upgrade in power specs. I haven't used the keyboard for more than 100 words in its entirety. So I will be moving to the all hailed GSIII IF it is all it is cracked to be. As I like giant screens with thin bodies. Maybe a HTC One XL because I am loving this premadonna sense right now its frickkng awesome.

My hope would be for HTC to reconsider their decision and make another device with a hardware keyboard, something in the quad-core arena.
Keep the tv-out so the form factor can be kept small, and the smaller screen is off-set by plugging into a bigger one mostly anywhere.
I get the impression that hardware keyboard devices are a dying breed, and if they die out completely then so does my participation in the smart-phone arena.
I don't like cell phones, don't use the phone function of this one, and without a hardware keyboard the frustration level of using a pocket coputer like this is off the charts for me.
As convenient as this is for my job, I can be served by a transformer or something similar fine, and I have a bluetooth keyboard but it's not as worthwhile as an attached keyboard.
Samsung is my hope for the future as long as HTC intends to give us the finger...

Droid 4, when we can start using it on gsm carriers. I think of all the qwerty phones, it's the best, because of its evolution and improvements over the generations.

The Droid line is marketed by Verizon, so we'll never see any official Droid phones off of CDMA networks.

I believe they're going to release a radio update that allows it to be used on gsm carriers.
Or I'm sure some xda member will figure out how to make the phone work on other networks.
Whatever the case may be, this will be much further down the road when everyone has moved on from this phone and if no other qwertys have come out since then

Lmfao. Ok its time for Some Tech Talk. Tmo and At&t both use GSM towers. Sprint and verizon use CDMA. With GSM you need a SIM Card. With CDMA there is no SIM Card. Long story short it has zero to do with Radio Flashing. I dont care what radio you flash unless verizon moves to GSM which will never happen no verizon droid phone will work with Tmo or At&t. Even if you find an unlocked verizon phone you still cant use it on a GSM Network. The hardware wont allow it. No amount of Software hacking will get you there either. It is beyond impossible.

After reading about world phones, this article seems to refer to quad band gsm phones. Our phone doesn't have CDMA... I guess I knew that though.

You only need a GSM Phone to be considered a world phone. I think 2 countries including the US use CDMA the rest use GSM. So basically yes the DS is a world phone.

'sigh' even though I'm sick to the point of being bed bound, I still researched this for you. Do your home work before posting. Also, I know the difference between gsm and cdma. After over 400 posts on this site, it's remarkable how little credit you give me. But back to the point, there are cdma phones out there that have Sim slots, also known as world phones. It does depend on the hardware however. So a Sim slot =/= unlocked for domestic gsm use. Actually it never means that, because I've never come across a world phone that's already unlocked for domestic gsm. Usually you have to flash a new baseband to enable the radio to work properly (assuming the radio has the capability to run on your bands).

Yes you are correct. It was just the way you said it I assumed you were trying to say you could make a CDMA only device a "World phone" by simply flashing a radio.
Apple saw the value in iPhones with CDMA, and Google owns Motorola Mobility so the push for the Droid team to branch out past Verizon might be just the kick start they need.

Motorolla is in limbo - Google has repeatedly said they will not make a 'Google' branded hardware phone, they bought Motorolla for the patents. Most likely they will sell the hardware division of it off to Huwai (or however you spell it).
I wouldn't count on Motorolla making out from being a part of the Google empire, quite the opposite - they will be stripped of anything Google deems to be of value and what's left will be sold to the highest bidder.

Last I checked ATT hasn't gotten the "premium suite" either. I don't think they even have the official 4.1.2 update like we do. I put premium suite in quotes because premium suite probably means different things for different devices. We technically did receive a "premium suite" upgrade with the BLK3 firmware, but this only included Swype 1.4, and some other stuff I don't remember.
I guess the benefit of ATT/TMobile in this regard is that you could use the international S3 on their networks, and that will get frequent updates from Samsung directly.

I assume he just means month to month with an unlocked device. Otherwise it is simply illogical. To go from one overbearing carrier that holds the latest sweet treats from you to another is not a viable solution. Personally I would just root and install any premium suites along with a more refined OS, and stick with the superior network.... Rule the air!

I have to keep wondering why the other handset makers aren't allowed the same freedom Apple is? I mean, when Apple puts out a new version of iOS, all iPhones get the update directly from Apple. They do not have to wait for the carriers to "test" or "verify compatibility" with their networks. The phones get the update and the customers get the latest software. Also, ever notice that iPhones are not jammed full of carrier bloatware? Maybe Apple told the carriers that they wouldn't get the iPhone unless Apple was able to completely control the software on the phone. So carriers caved just to get it. What about now though? Seems Android has surpassed the iPhone. Think it is about time the handset makers told the carriers that enough is enough. It's not like the carriers are in a great position to refuse. No phones, no business. At least then it would make it easier for the manufacturers and lessen the number of variants they need to make. Apple has already proven that it can be done and that the carriers will cave. Just a thought.

You are exactly right, Apple played hardball and only allowed carriers that let them update on their schedule and gave them control infer the firmware (no bloat).
They could do this because they had the leverage, the carriers wanted the iPhone more than Apple needed them. Now some carriers like Verizon actually held out of selling the iPhone for a while because of this reason.
This is more difficult for Android manufacturers because before the S3 there hasn't been a phone that really commanded respect from the carriers. Companies like HTC can't even get their flagship phone carried by Verizon. Now Samsung had the leverage, let's see if they start throwing their weight around.

I guess I should have been more clear: In my experience (and everyone's is different), AT&T has always been the one to have their crap together. It took my small town a while to get 3G through AT&T, but their EDGE network was equivalent to Verizon's 3G. It still is there and here (near Fort Bragg, NC). I've never managed to get above 1Mbps with Verizon's 3G in either place. Their 4G LTE is great, but it fails to penetrate buildings (here) well at all.
At the place I work (small retail store, size of Family Dollar/Dollar General), I get nearly full LTE signal at the front of the store, but when I hit the halfway point, it just drops. When I'm on campus, 2-4 bars of LTE, but inside a building, I'm lucky to keep a consistent 1-2 bar 3G signal. AT&T just got LTE here a few months ago, but overcast, rain, shine, or deep inside of a building, their 3G, '4G' and LTE have never managed to have less than 4 bars.
Every time I bring this up, though, there are people that have nearly opposite experiences, too. I'm not saying Verizon is a terrible provider, but because of poor setups, or network saturation, it has become nearly unbearable to enjoy a 'smartphone' on their networks.
TL;DR: AT&T is multiply better than VZW in SouthEastern NC.

I've always wished Android phones, or at least Nexus devices were able to have this privilege. At the same time, Android has the wonderful world of rooting, and now that I've finally taken the dive, it's hard to look back at iOS for me.
I would NOT be surprised if Samsung stopped selling their big named phones at Verizon after whatever contract they probably have. We can all see Verizon pampers Motorola over Samsung. All I see from them is Update for DROID RAZR HD every 2 months. Just one the other day.
We had what 1 or 2 real ones and this new one which is worthless because it doesn't actually bring us up to International 4.1.2?

It took my small town a while to get 3G through AT&T, but their EDGE network was equivalent to Verizon's 3G. It still is there and here (near Fort Bragg, NC). I've never managed to get above 1Mbps with Verizon's 3G in either place. Their 4G LTE is great, but it fails to penetrate buildings (here) well at all.
At the place I work (small retail store, size of Family Dollar/Dollar General), I get nearly full LTE signal at the front of the store, but when I hit the halfway point, it just drops. When I'm on campus, 2-4 bars of LTE, but inside a building, I'm lucky to keep a consistent 1-2 bar 3G signal. AT&T just got LTE here a few months ago, but overcast, rain, shine, or deep inside of a building, their 3G, '4G' and LTE have never managed to have less than 4 bars.
Every time I bring this up, though, there are people that have nearly opposite experiences, too. I'm not saying Verizon is a terrible provider, but because of poor setups, or network saturation, it has become nearly unbearable to enjoy a 'smartphone' on their networks.
TL;DR: AT&T is multiply better than VZW in SouthEastern NC.
I've always wished Android phones, or at least Nexus devices were able to have this privilege. At the same time, Android has the wonderful world of rooting, and now that I've finally taken the dive, it's hard to look back at iOS for me.

I feel you, reception has always been a regional thing. Where I currently live and work ATT is pretty much useless indoors, I could be standing outside a (stone) building with 5bars of 3G, and when I stepped inside the door I would be searching for signal. On the other hand Verizon has had 4G LTE here for like 2+ years and I usually get 2-3 bars of LTE indoors. Verizon LTE here is better than all but the most expensive cable internet packages.

Except the lack of multi-window seems to be entirely in Samsung's court at the moment. I may be wrong but none of the US S3's have multi-window support in the stock firmware. My guess is that it may be easier to implement multi-window in the Quad-core international version than it is on our dual-core phones.
I'm asking this seriously, not just complaining.
Someone will easily think out VZW, but ATT etc. also don't get it. Someone goes with dual core, but ours should be better than GS2 right?
And even with root you don't have a reliable and bug free solution for those PS features, especially Multi-Window.

Yeah, I'm struggling over this 3G right now, and even still I'm not sure of I successfully quoted this post. How I wish my experience with Verizon was the complete opposite.
On top of that, Apple only has one device that recieves updates; unlike Android, which has one update for several devices under different manufacturers. I wouldn't give up Touchwiz for anything, but the Nexus is clearly the way to go right now.

Ok, can someone help me. I want to switch to Tmobile because in my area Data is 10x faster with them. I have to bring my daughters as well. I'm an Android junky, they are not. My question is, will sprint I phone 4s work on tmobile? Tmo says I have to have sprint unlock them, then I can put Tmo sim in and we're good. Is that true? Will it work on Tmo 4g? And will Sprint unlock easily? Thanks. I'm just gonna wait on the ONE to switch mine, but my kids don't know the joy of Android

Sprint is on a PCS network and Tmobile uses GSM. They are totally different. You could bring an ATT IPhone to Tmoblie.
You should try to get your daughters away from those IPhones...

Yes, the 4S has a GSM SIM card that can be unlocked, but they're not still not going to want to let you use it on a domestic carrier - they will generally unlock for a customer in good standing for international use. Looking at some threads about people trying to get the Sprint 4S to work on T-Mobile it looks like way too much hassle requiring special equipment (at least at one point in time) and with poor results when it comes to function on T-Mobile's network. The phones also need to be jailbroken because Apple is cooperating with Sprint to not allow you to take the Sprint phone to another domestic carrier's network - this brings a whole new set of potential problems.
If you really want to try it, Google it and see what it would take on your part. Personally, I wouldn't want to do something like that with a kid's phone unless they were going to understand the process and be responsible and able to troubleshoot if things went wrong (same reason I wouldn't root a kid's phone for them without them understanding what's going on and the problems they might face and how to fix them).
Unless they're deeply invested in Apple's market, I'd sell the 4S's and get them N4's or S2's or something. This doesn't have to do with any personal dislike for iPhones - but for the fact that if you're going to go with T-Mobile their ability to get a signal and what kind of signal will depend on the local network and what work T-Mobile has done, even if you traded the Sprint models for factory unlocked ones. They may end up only ever getting 2g, they might have poor coverage due to lack of 1700MHz and more. And since they're your daughters I'd guess you want to make sure they can get a signal no matter where they are in case there's an emergency. I would explain things to them like adults - explain the reason you want to switch services and the impact on them if they choose to stay with an iPhone, show them how Android is really not all that different - teach them about making informed choices and to understand why they are making a certain choice.

Ok so I know that the Verizon M8 is unlocked and works on AT&T. I'm also aware that HSPA+ is supposed to be as good as it gets which is fine with me.because for the most part my service is terrible on AT&T as I live in a little Podunk town that doesn't have LTE. That being said the cities to the north and south of me both have LTE. I recently acquired the Verizon M8 and have made several trips to.both places and the phone always just shows H with the signal. Today however I happened to look at my phone and it's showing LTE, not only that but everything.is functioning. Internet, sending and.receiving sms and mms, and making calls all works.
Is there something.obvious I'm missing? To the best of my knowledge I shouldn't be getting LTE and my speed test pegged me at about 8 down but signal was weak so that doesn't surprise me.

Why did you buy a Verizon M8 to use on AT&T? If you're on AT&T, get the AT&T version. There's a reason carrier specific versions are sold, and it's not only because the carriers are evil demons out to butt rape your wallet.
The network designs of Verizon and AT&T are radically different, and even if the M8 has the hardware for both the different variants are designed out of the box to only work with one.
So, even if you did get it to work with AT&T's network, who knows what kind of problems you may be experiencing. It may just be network congestion, it may be something else. Point it, it's tough to troubleshoot when you bought a device from the wrong carrier, as you just introduced a whole new crazy variable into the equation.

Slow down there captain. I'm not complaining about service issues or anything of the sort. I'm questioning whether it's actually possible that I could be getting AT&T LTE on the Verizon Variant. The circumstances behind why I have the Verizon version are completely irrelevant. I have an s5 I can use if I want and if it makes you happy it is the AT&T version.
I understand the differences between AT&T and Verizon's infrastructure, but it just so happens that the Verizon m8 has everything I need to function perfectly for me. So please take the time to actually address what I was asking instead of judging me for not purchasing the device you think I should have.

Bravo just another basher that was quick to judge and his only intent was to try to put you down. It sucks that you cant erase peoples comments off of your posting because its posts like that that you should be able to delete. Why don't you try Convert it to AT&T or Unlock more LTE band
