I've been considering purchasing the TF201 for a while now, but now that the TF300 has been released, I find it even more attractive at only $399. One of the things preventing me from going with a Transformer is whether or not the Dock's keyboard really enhances the overall 'experience'.
I would like to know what to expect from current users of the Transformer + Dock, of any model as I would expect similar performance. Is there a noticeable lag when typing from the dock? Do you notice more noticeable lag in the stock browser vs Dolphin, Opera, or Firefox ? How does it fare in word processing / note taking applications?
When a large number of things are going on at once it can take a bit to select an area to type into, but once typing there is very little if any lag at all (not noticeable to me) Do take into account that I'm overclocked with a custom kernel, that may have helped. Even before doing that I remember it was relatively lag free. Stock browser is meh, you should probably find an alternative. (not for typing but for functionality reasons, gestures etc..) Dedicated word processing is great, but do keep in mind that full writing suite apps usually cost in the $15-25 range.
Just my *ยข2.
Hi
I guess for me it depends a little bit on the application but purpose as well.
I am writing parts of my doctor thesis on it, whenever I am mobile and have some time
With notepad or jotterpad there is no lag in my opinion. I am actually rather positively surprised by the quality it offers. I saw lots of threads here about people complaining that the keyboard quality and the buttons would be poor. But then for me writing works pretty well, combined with the auto correction almost flawless.
And hey there might be better Bluetooth keyboards, but which one offers extra hours of battery?
I very rarely see it lag. I sometimes see it lag if it's been on for sometime and theirs lot of things going on in the background.
Do you have the same problems?
Every day my tablet freezes some seconds, and then starts having issues with rendering the screen. I made a video of it. Have a look here. I have it mostly when browsing the web. All of a sudden everything freezes and issues like this start to happen.
For me this is not workable anymore, so after 4 days I made the painful decision to return my Aus Tab and swapped it with an iPad 3.
The good:
I must say, all works much smoother on the iPad. Some apps do also crash, like is the case on Android, but at least the key tasks like surfing and watching videos are just a much better experience ...
The bad:
But I do miss a lot that the Infinity and Android has to offer.
I will make a new post with my comparison, but in short, I miss the luxury of the 'transforming' part of the Infinity: the keyboard integration was very good and the Swiftkey Keyboard is *much* better than the basic iOS keyboard. I really miss it a lot.
I am a Google adept, so I also miss the Google apps. Most of them exist on iOS but are much better and have more features on Android.
And most of all I hate the closed attitude of Apple that pops up in all little details the iOS has.
So, Asus, PLEASE fix the I/O and video issues ASAP. They are key to have a good user experience and without them your tablet is not good enough for me. The day these issues are solved I can ditch Apple again and will be a proud Android/Asus user again ;-)
I have not experienced the video issues you are referring to. That being said, I hope you really enjoy your iPad and never look back. Good times! (Even though you cannot tinker with it as easily, it will probably serve you well.)
I am sure the iPad will serve you well. Have fun and here's to the day that your path will cross the Androidians' again.

Thanks, but I'm not leaving Android. In fact I'm using Android a lot (on my personal phone and and at work). It will just not be on this tablet for now :-(
For the record: I would love to continue to work with this Tab, but - for me at least - the user experience is too bad compared to the iPad. Too bad as I hate Apples strategy and swear by Google's way of working. But at the end of the day Apple manages to let ther iPads work as expected. The Asus does not. That's my personal opinion.
I just try to post my remarks here because I hope other people will do the same and will push Asus to solve them asap.
@Gert: I had a similar issue once in the Gallery app on the previous firmware. Suddenly the screen started flickering when browsing images. I restarted the tablet and have not seen it happen again.
The new .22 firmware has some fixes for various flicker issues, if I recall correctly from the changelog.

I had pre ordered the TF700 until late last week..
I canceled and ordered me the Ipad 3. Absolutely love it. Smooth as silk. Does what it is supposed to do and I am even ok with I tunes, once I got comfortable with it.
I may go back to android, but I will wait and see how android develops first..
Benchmarks aside, cause I know people here put it through the ringer...
What is the everyday use of this thing like performance wise, such as surfing, moving between screens and apps, etc.
Works like a charm. Been using it every day for 2 weeks. Sometimes you get some short lags from the io problem, but for my use I seldom notice it.
A lot of reading. RSS, Pocket, Ebooks, XDA.
Watching some films while travelling or on Sunday morning in the bed.
Some writing.
I hardly ever play games on any of my mobile devices.
All the above works very well for me except Google Currents which lags like hell in landscape mode.
I am awaiting for mine. I have a Sony Tablet S to hold me over. I literally beat it up. I'm on it around the clock at work and home, into the wee hours of the night. Can't wait to battle test my Infinity the same way.
I've had the Sony for 2 months and logged almost 800 hours..

I upgraded from the TF101 and so far, this blows it away (which is what I would expect). I haven't had any significant lag or freezes, everything seems to run very smoothly. Browsing is definately a significant improvement. I would get a number of lags browsing sites like Facebook from my TF101, this scrolls through it like butter.
My only complaint would be that some apps are not ready for primetime with the new 1920x1200 resolution. Some apps, like IMBD work just fine, but the font size is very small. Not a huge problem right now, but I suspect these apps will need to be adjusted over time. Thumb Keyboard also had very small fonts on the keyboard itself, but that was adjustable at least.
Some other apps are more problematic....for example, I fell in love with Go Launcher HD for Tablets on my TF101. Works fine on the TF700, however some of the widgets/icons overlapp the controls at the top of the screen. I couldn't find a combination of grids-size that would work for me, so I went back to the stock launch for now.
I suspect all these things will get worked by the app developers as these higher resolution displays take off....

Guys, thanks so much, I appreciate it.
This is what I was looking for.
Every android tab has pro's and con's.
I am aware of the I/O issue, but as my coworker said to me this morning when discussing it "how many times will you be copying files to it or downloading?"
Although the tablet should work out of the box for the money, this still seems like it will be what I am looking for just to browse, listen to music, GPS, etc.
Thanks

That's my opinion too.
You pay a lot of money so you can expect ASUS to fix it and rumor has they are on it.
But although I'm not that of an ASUS fand I think the buzz is a bit too much overreacting.

Without using one extensively, I'd have to say I agree with that line of thought. Every time I've seen a prime or TF300 display model, I've tried to force it into giving me an ANR in the browser. Every time I've been unsuccessful.
I'm looking for something I can browse the web with, handle email, and create/edit office documents. I admit I'm going to be harder on it than most since I'm setting up a debian chroot on it for libreoffice, but even then I have a hard time seeing the low IO benchmarking being a big issue.
There's a thread in the Prime section asking about how satisfied people are with their tablet, and while the posts themselves are very vocally negative, the poll results show an 80% complete satisfaction rate. I think that speaks for itself.

The people enjoying the tablet are too busy actually using it and getting on with their lives instead of spending their life complaining about it on the forums. I'm sure for 90% of people, this tablet is fine in it's current state, and the other 10% will get an update to fix issues.
As I said in other posts, not only one or two but pretty much all the major sites list Transformer Infinity as the best Android Tablet. General consensus of losing a point on reviews seem to be the complain of android ecosystem not having dedicated tablet apps. So yeah I am sure the I/O issue is real and would certainly be nice to have it fixed. But if it is truly a problem for majority people for their daily use, you would think it won't be rated as the best tablet.
Having said that mine is waiting at home. So I'll know how it functions. I don't play games on it, but I do push the device to certain extreme for what I do such as opening massively large EPUB, PDF files. So let you all know my experience.

I've had the same experience. When I've used the display models (as an attempt to check out the tf700), I see stuttering only on crazy long/big websites, but no ANRs from i/o.
My hope is this hardware will help with some of that. I get it tomorrow, can't wait!

What is causing the rendering? Is it cause of the high resolution and the T3?

I had the same problem with my TF300T but using adobe's official adobe reader app fixed it quite a bit (still a slight lag). Overall performance was about equal between my TF300T and Ipad 2 (goodreader) in terms of reading PDF's. I imagine, the TF700 might be a bit slower because of the higher res. Optimization should fix it though. 4 cores are meant for rendering.
I don't know what the problem is.
However it's not fast but still a lot better then on the TF101 which couldn't handle that PDF at all.
It feels like it's especially slow when there are many or one big picture on the page. The PDF ist 76 MB though so I don't know if it's fair to use it on a tablet.
I won't be able to test until later but I know different app are totally different. One that I found the fastest were mantano and ezPDF. As for ePub, iBook did good job except initial loading took a bit of time whereas mantano flew as long as I turned off TOC page assignment. So I am hoping this is now faster with quad core comparing to my old galaxy 10.1 dual core
I can't remember the name for the pdf app because I just bought it recently. It's IMO faster the ezPDF.
Edit: It's RepliGo PDF Reader.
For ePUB I'm using Aldiko which works pretty well especially together with Aldiko Sync.

I'm using RepliGo for 150+MB pdfs with scanned pages every day and it's been doing really fine so far, especially compared to the competition (I'd say iAnnotate comes second). I'm opening these files both from internal storage and microSD. And I just love reading from Infinity's screen.

Hello all,
I currently have a Motorola Xoom and was thinking of selling it off and upgrading to a transformer infinity.
Looking around this seems to currently be the best android tablet and I love the idea of the dock keyboard. I have a keyboard for my Xoom but it means I have to prop the xoom up on something to be able to use it lol!
The infinity looks like a very impressive piece of kit, but I am just wondering what people's views are?
I am quite attached to my old Xoom, even though it's not the prettiest or lightest tablet around it's been worth its weight in gold and has worked with everything I have thrown at it and he battery life has also been very good. I've got my old Xoom rooted and running Jelly bean so I was wondering if the infinity was also a good solid device?
The only thing that I find annoying with my xoom is it's weight... its like carrying a brick sometimes and it's a little to heavy to hold with one hand

if you just read around the forum here, you will find all the information you need to make your decision.
as for what i think, i really like it. the new JB update has make it run a lot smoother and the dock works wonderfully. only thing i would see that would hold you back would be the build. not quality per say (although it does seem to be an issue for some) but the fact that the xoom is built like a brick. after going from such a sturdy tablet, any and all other tablets feel pretty flimsy so that will be something you need to judge for yourself.

I had xoom at one point, and felt heavy as well. Despite the difference is only ~200g, it is significant enough to notice. In any event, Infinity is indeed for me the best tablet available at the moment. Just make sure to get it from a place where you can potentially exchange as unfortunately quality control issue exist with ASUS.
For the reasons you listed - possibly yes. However take into account that while it might be the " best android tablet", it suffers from i/o issues and the last time I had so much stuttering and response lag was when I had a Motorola defy running 2.1... and this is supposed to be the top end tablet with JB.
I just bought one (literally, today), and I'm already regretting it. I simply can't live with the stuttering and choppyness of the browsers this thing provides. It's terrible. Probably returning mine to the store.

Now that has put me off! Quite shocked to hear that, is that a common problem?
I was looking forward to getting a lighter tablet, the bulkiness and thickness of the Xoom is starting to get to me... It feels like an armoured tank! lol
I wonder if there is still stuttering and choppyness with custom ROMS? I guess I'll have to have a ready through these boards to find out some more before I decide.

Maybe you can buy it try it.
My Infinity has been pretty much a good experience.
I'm not a nit-picker though.
Some folks have gotten some real nasty disappointing units.
There's plenty of good along with bad if you search these forum pages.

I see this posted a lot and it's true with most browsers. That said I run opera and get smooth performance with it. I used it on my xoom when everyone complained about stuttering with the same result. when I used my xoom exclusively we had pretty much the same complaints. Unfortunately the opera team has yet to scale the url bar up to the infinity resolution yet so the text is tiny.

It's not all bad. It's got a cool design, it's light, sturdy.. got some powerful specs running under the hood, seems to be able to handle heating well, great camera, the best screen ever etc.. BUT - as great as those features are, I just can't get over how non responsive everything is. Any website I try to open on the default browser takes 3-4 secs to respond, some sites cause the browser to ANR, or it would appear to be displaying a site smoothly and then it freezes for a couple of seconds while you're trying to scroll; or switching between apps with the task manager, sometimes it's smooth as butter like on my S3, sometimes you can see how much it struggles; even going over the different settings menus makes it stutter. Not to mention the delay you get trying to flip the tablet from vertical to landscape..... it really bothers me.
I'm going to see if I can get a replacement and try out a different unit, maybe mine came from a bad batch at the factory, who knows. Maybe it actually runs smooth and consistently so for other people and what I'm experiencing is a faulty model. But if these issues are common then I would advise to stay away from the tf700 until Asus has it fixed (or sadly abandons it and retries with a new tablet).

To be honest with you, I don't think exchanging for another unit will give you a better experience. What you have described is pretty much the standard performance of the TF700. The fact is that Tegra 3 is not capable of driving a full HD screen (we are still stuck with single-channel memory in 2012!!!) and thus the stuttering. The poor I/O also makes things worse. Even the JB update cannot really make the browser free from ANR, and simple tasks such as downloading files in the background will make your tf700 unresponsive. If you want full HD screens, stay far away from Tegra 3. Snapdragon S4 Pro is the way to go.
Sounds like a mixed bag then, I think I shall have to try one out first for sure...just have to find somewhere selling one locally, or maybe order one on line and try it out for a few days, if it doesn't work out I could always send it back.
I just love the design with the attachable keyboard, and I am really looking for something a lot lighter than my Xoom. I did originally look at the Transformer Prime, and then I heard about the infinity.
I am sure the Infinity is great device, the Xoom also has a bad reputation but I have had no problems with it whatsoever.
I think a shopping trip is due today to see if I can find an Infinity in stores =)

The stock browser is bugged. That's common knowledge. Other browsers work just fine without hanging. One program having an issue is not the fault of the tablet if the rest works fine.
As for the ANr. Usually you (used to) get them when an app takes a while to load. Most of those times, it works again when you get the popup. Since JB I have only had one App Not Responding error, and that was a Live Wallpaper which Playstore listed as incompatible. That was my own fault, not the Tf's.
I've not had a single speed or performance issue. Nothing lags, everything runs fast. There are some very unlucky people here, and some very lucky ones.
The only negative I've found is that developers (not the guys here) are so obsessed with the SGS3 that there's hardly anything to be found for the Tegra 3 and the massive resolution of the TF700.

I must disagree with your point about ANR. It is true that the apps will usually work again after those pop-ups, but those ANR messages should not be there in the first place. They are annoying and make me less confident about my tablet's reliability. To be 100% honest, the Infinity is the most crash-prone Android devices I have ever used. You might not believe me, but my Sensation on ICS is a lot more stable than the Infinity, and less lags at well.
For the lack of development, I guess it is expected, given the high price tag of the Infinity and the fact that it is not a popular model.

Actually, the stock browser is the least buggy for me. Can't use chrome or dolphine because they stutter so much on the tf700.
I'm happy to hear you're experiencing a fast and smooth tablet as it suggests that getting a replacement will solve it.
Either we have different definitions to "lag-free" or Asus's quality control on the tablet is so meh that its smoothness and stability vary wildly from unit to unit.
Well I decided not to go for the infinity in the end, it sure looks good but my with my budget restraints I think it's a little out of my league at the moment
I've opted for the Prime as it was a considerable lot less... at least it's lighter than my Xoom.
Thanks for all your help guys

I absolutely love my Infinity. ASUS does have quality control issues. Make sure you buy from a vendor that will allow returns if the device is defective. Mine came with a SMALL amount of light bleed, two minor scratches on the back plate, and the screen pops out of the bezel a TINY bit over the camera. These issues are annoying and it took me some time to accept them, but they don't hinder my device's performance. I would definitely recommend purchasing the Infinity, but make sure you get a good one.

hi, im thinking about exchanging the Note 10.1 that i got a few days ago for the Transformer Infinity.
I went with the Note 10.1 because i couldn't find any problems with it when when looking over reviews for it, opposed to the Infinity where i was reading I/O issues, browser freezing up and other small things.
Now the reason im thinking about exchanging for the Infinity is because of the screen resolution. on the Note 10.1 when i first turned it on, it really hurt my eyes, and i thought it might just be because i had a headache, but i slept off the headache and started using it again, and low and behold my eyes started hurting again. has anyone had this experience before because of the screen resolution?
another question i have, are what are the major differences between the 10.1 and TF Infinity?
Thanks,
Ryan
For pure screen resolution then yes it is much much better. Bloke that sits next to me at work has the note with the s-pen. He keeps commenting how fatastically sharp my screen is. Where as I keep leching over hs s-pen and all the wonderful tricks it can do when he is taking notes in meetings......

hi, im thinking about exchanging the Note 10.1 that i got a few days ago for the Transformer Infinity.
Thanks,
Ryan

Overall the Infinity is solid- however- performance is heavily impacted by running certain apps, including many of the built-in apps. I have aggressively disabled unneeded apps and removed the Facebook client- which is a memory and performance hog. In addition, I periodically clear browser cache and have switched to Boat Browser, as the built in Android browser shows considerable lag.
It may also be helpful to avoid apps that employ adware- which is a large number of both paid and free apps.
In summary, the TF700t is a device that forces you to think about ways to maintain performance. While most of these methods are common sense and would help any device's performance- on the 700 they are essential. On the other hand, when coupled with the Asus keyboard- the device is extremely versatile and does in fact bridge the tablet-netbook gap. How effectively depends on one's requirements. It is probably superior to the Surface RT- and for the price, far more versatile than an IPad- or Galaxy Note 10.1- though I am curious about multi-window..

Yes, I've had several cases where a low resolution caused a migraine. Mainly I get this from old screens, but I've had it while using my classmate's Galaxy Tab 2, as well.
As an artist I was originally leaning towards the Note because it works with the Wacom pens, but I went with the TF700 because of the USB port and screen resolution, as well as the dock with it's extra battery. I know there's docks for the Note, too, but not with a battery. But really, the USB and screen were the dealbreaker for me.
Yes, the TF700 can be a bit sluggish if you do too much at once. But it all comes down to performance management.
How is the web browsing experience. Id be mostly using it for web browsing, watching movies, social networking, reading books and comics and reading articles online, its hard to read with this screen for a long period of time

The beloved Sdbags (one of the replyers above) made browsing a true joy!
It's blazing fast and scrolling, zooming etc go very smooth and fast.
In general he made the tf700 much more snappy and a real top-notch device (the way it should have been in the first place)
Thanks

could you please go into more detail on how he made it a much better device please?
Browsing on the stock browser can be a bit laggish. But to be frank half the time it's faster than the one on my phone. There are speed-up fixes for it that require rooting, and other browsers are quicker, too. Chrome is fast, but has no Flash support.
On occasion there's a "Browser Not Responding" error. Whent he error pops up, the browser is already working again. This has gotten much better with recent updates.
Watching movies: It has some issues with full HD .mkv's (bluray), but I watch most films and series on my tab in the train in other codecs, works fine.
Can't answer the social networking one, I don't do that. Twitter has no issues, I don't use Facebook.
Reading books, I use Moon+ Reader, the IPS+ setting is a lifesaver. I can read my books in full sunlight. I read most magazines in .pdf format and the occasional comic, haven't had any issues. I use Perfect Viewer, it also reads PDF with a plugin (both free).
Articles online, haven't had any issues. I do most my Uni work on it, so.. *shrugs*
If you don't mind unlocking and flashing, CleanROM makes this tab te best one out there.

i planned on rooting and unlocking it to make it a better tablet.
so the problems iv'e read about the browser freezing are just with the stock im guessing, once you root it and install different roms on it, it doesn't have those problem anymore?
Yes, the issues are largely Stock-based. CleanROM (Which is what adelancker meant by Sdbags) makes this a completely different device.
I personally haven't done this, but everyone else is very positive about it.

ok thank you every much, i think i might exchange my note 10.1 for the Infinity now, i have the 30 day exchange at best buy, i just cant stand the screen on the Note, i used it for 2 hours and my eyes are throbbing after the first hour.
The main thing that kept me from getting the Infinity was the fact that the browser froze during a review i watched, and then i looked it up and lots of people said the browser had problems
