[Q] Transformer Infinity vs Note 10.1 - Asus Transformer TF700

hi, im thinking about exchanging the Note 10.1 that i got a few days ago for the Transformer Infinity.
I went with the Note 10.1 because i couldn't find any problems with it when when looking over reviews for it, opposed to the Infinity where i was reading I/O issues, browser freezing up and other small things.
Now the reason im thinking about exchanging for the Infinity is because of the screen resolution. on the Note 10.1 when i first turned it on, it really hurt my eyes, and i thought it might just be because i had a headache, but i slept off the headache and started using it again, and low and behold my eyes started hurting again. has anyone had this experience before because of the screen resolution?
another question i have, are what are the major differences between the 10.1 and TF Infinity?
Thanks,
Ryan

For pure screen resolution then yes it is much much better. Bloke that sits next to me at work has the note with the s-pen. He keeps commenting how fatastically sharp my screen is. Where as I keep leching over hs s-pen and all the wonderful tricks it can do when he is taking notes in meetings......

Overall the Infinity is solid- however- performance is heavily impacted by running certain apps, including many of the built-in apps. I have aggressively disabled unneeded apps and removed the Facebook client- which is a memory and performance hog. In addition, I periodically clear browser cache and have switched to Boat Browser, as the built in Android browser shows considerable lag.
It may also be helpful to avoid apps that employ adware- which is a large number of both paid and free apps.
In summary, the TF700t is a device that forces you to think about ways to maintain performance. While most of these methods are common sense and would help any device's performance- on the 700 they are essential. On the other hand, when coupled with the Asus keyboard- the device is extremely versatile and does in fact bridge the tablet-netbook gap. How effectively depends on one's requirements. It is probably superior to the Surface RT- and for the price, far more versatile than an IPad- or Galaxy Note 10.1- though I am curious about multi-window..

Yes, I've had several cases where a low resolution caused a migraine. Mainly I get this from old screens, but I've had it while using my classmate's Galaxy Tab 2, as well.
As an artist I was originally leaning towards the Note because it works with the Wacom pens, but I went with the TF700 because of the USB port and screen resolution, as well as the dock with it's extra battery. I know there's docks for the Note, too, but not with a battery. But really, the USB and screen were the dealbreaker for me.
Yes, the TF700 can be a bit sluggish if you do too much at once. But it all comes down to performance management.

How is the web browsing experience. Id be mostly using it for web browsing, watching movies, social networking, reading books and comics and reading articles online, its hard to read with this screen for a long period of time

The beloved Sdbags (one of the replyers above) made browsing a true joy!
It's blazing fast and scrolling, zooming etc go very smooth and fast.
In general he made the tf700 much more snappy and a real top-notch device (the way it should have been in the first place)

Thanks

could you please go into more detail on how he made it a much better device please?

Browsing on the stock browser can be a bit laggish. But to be frank half the time it's faster than the one on my phone. There are speed-up fixes for it that require rooting, and other browsers are quicker, too. Chrome is fast, but has no Flash support.
On occasion there's a "Browser Not Responding" error. Whent he error pops up, the browser is already working again. This has gotten much better with recent updates.
Watching movies: It has some issues with full HD .mkv's (bluray), but I watch most films and series on my tab in the train in other codecs, works fine.
Can't answer the social networking one, I don't do that. Twitter has no issues, I don't use Facebook.
Reading books, I use Moon+ Reader, the IPS+ setting is a lifesaver. I can read my books in full sunlight. I read most magazines in .pdf format and the occasional comic, haven't had any issues. I use Perfect Viewer, it also reads PDF with a plugin (both free).
Articles online, haven't had any issues. I do most my Uni work on it, so.. *shrugs*
If you don't mind unlocking and flashing, CleanROM makes this tab te best one out there.

i planned on rooting and unlocking it to make it a better tablet.
so the problems iv'e read about the browser freezing are just with the stock im guessing, once you root it and install different roms on it, it doesn't have those problem anymore?

Yes, the issues are largely Stock-based. CleanROM (Which is what adelancker meant by Sdbags) makes this a completely different device.
I personally haven't done this, but everyone else is very positive about it.

ok thank you every much, i think i might exchange my note 10.1 for the Infinity now, i have the 30 day exchange at best buy, i just cant stand the screen on the Note, i used it for 2 hours and my eyes are throbbing after the first hour.
The main thing that kept me from getting the Infinity was the fact that the browser froze during a review i watched, and then i looked it up and lots of people said the browser had problems

Describe Everyday use?

Benchmarks aside, cause I know people here put it through the ringer...
What is the everyday use of this thing like performance wise, such as surfing, moving between screens and apps, etc.
Works like a charm. Been using it every day for 2 weeks. Sometimes you get some short lags from the io problem, but for my use I seldom notice it.
A lot of reading. RSS, Pocket, Ebooks, XDA.
Watching some films while travelling or on Sunday morning in the bed.
Some writing.
I hardly ever play games on any of my mobile devices.
All the above works very well for me except Google Currents which lags like hell in landscape mode.
I am awaiting for mine. I have a Sony Tablet S to hold me over. I literally beat it up. I'm on it around the clock at work and home, into the wee hours of the night. Can't wait to battle test my Infinity the same way.
I've had the Sony for 2 months and logged almost 800 hours..

I upgraded from the TF101 and so far, this blows it away (which is what I would expect). I haven't had any significant lag or freezes, everything seems to run very smoothly. Browsing is definately a significant improvement. I would get a number of lags browsing sites like Facebook from my TF101, this scrolls through it like butter.
My only complaint would be that some apps are not ready for primetime with the new 1920x1200 resolution. Some apps, like IMBD work just fine, but the font size is very small. Not a huge problem right now, but I suspect these apps will need to be adjusted over time. Thumb Keyboard also had very small fonts on the keyboard itself, but that was adjustable at least.
Some other apps are more problematic....for example, I fell in love with Go Launcher HD for Tablets on my TF101. Works fine on the TF700, however some of the widgets/icons overlapp the controls at the top of the screen. I couldn't find a combination of grids-size that would work for me, so I went back to the stock launch for now.
I suspect all these things will get worked by the app developers as these higher resolution displays take off....

Guys, thanks so much, I appreciate it.
This is what I was looking for.
Every android tab has pro's and con's.
I am aware of the I/O issue, but as my coworker said to me this morning when discussing it "how many times will you be copying files to it or downloading?"
Although the tablet should work out of the box for the money, this still seems like it will be what I am looking for just to browse, listen to music, GPS, etc.
Thanks

That's my opinion too.
You pay a lot of money so you can expect ASUS to fix it and rumor has they are on it.
But although I'm not that of an ASUS fand I think the buzz is a bit too much overreacting.

Without using one extensively, I'd have to say I agree with that line of thought. Every time I've seen a prime or TF300 display model, I've tried to force it into giving me an ANR in the browser. Every time I've been unsuccessful.
I'm looking for something I can browse the web with, handle email, and create/edit office documents. I admit I'm going to be harder on it than most since I'm setting up a debian chroot on it for libreoffice, but even then I have a hard time seeing the low IO benchmarking being a big issue.
There's a thread in the Prime section asking about how satisfied people are with their tablet, and while the posts themselves are very vocally negative, the poll results show an 80% complete satisfaction rate. I think that speaks for itself.

The people enjoying the tablet are too busy actually using it and getting on with their lives instead of spending their life complaining about it on the forums. I'm sure for 90% of people, this tablet is fine in it's current state, and the other 10% will get an update to fix issues.
As I said in other posts, not only one or two but pretty much all the major sites list Transformer Infinity as the best Android Tablet. General consensus of losing a point on reviews seem to be the complain of android ecosystem not having dedicated tablet apps. So yeah I am sure the I/O issue is real and would certainly be nice to have it fixed. But if it is truly a problem for majority people for their daily use, you would think it won't be rated as the best tablet.
Having said that mine is waiting at home. So I'll know how it functions. I don't play games on it, but I do push the device to certain extreme for what I do such as opening massively large EPUB, PDF files. So let you all know my experience.

I've had the same experience. When I've used the display models (as an attempt to check out the tf700), I see stuttering only on crazy long/big websites, but no ANRs from i/o.
My hope is this hardware will help with some of that. I get it tomorrow, can't wait!

I can already tell you that high res pdfs are rendering quite slow.
Epubs with a lot of text are no problem.

What is causing the rendering? Is it cause of the high resolution and the T3?

I had the same problem with my TF300T but using adobe's official adobe reader app fixed it quite a bit (still a slight lag). Overall performance was about equal between my TF300T and Ipad 2 (goodreader) in terms of reading PDF's. I imagine, the TF700 might be a bit slower because of the higher res. Optimization should fix it though. 4 cores are meant for rendering.
I don't know what the problem is.
However it's not fast but still a lot better then on the TF101 which couldn't handle that PDF at all.
It feels like it's especially slow when there are many or one big picture on the page. The PDF ist 76 MB though so I don't know if it's fair to use it on a tablet.
I won't be able to test until later but I know different app are totally different. One that I found the fastest were mantano and ezPDF. As for ePub, iBook did good job except initial loading took a bit of time whereas mantano flew as long as I turned off TOC page assignment. So I am hoping this is now faster with quad core comparing to my old galaxy 10.1 dual core
I can't remember the name for the pdf app because I just bought it recently. It's IMO faster the ezPDF.
Edit: It's RepliGo PDF Reader.
For ePUB I'm using Aldiko which works pretty well especially together with Aldiko Sync.

I'm using RepliGo for 150+MB pdfs with scanned pages every day and it's been doing really fine so far, especially compared to the competition (I'd say iAnnotate comes second). I'm opening these files both from internal storage and microSD. And I just love reading from Infinity's screen.

Asus transformer Infinity or Samsung galaxy note 10.1

which tablet is better the Asus transformer Infinity or Samsung galaxy note 10.1
please tell us what do you think and why?
This is what I think:
for the Asus transformer Infinity:
* it has a a good super IPS+ 1920x1200 Pixels (which I Love) its great for watching full HD movies, web browsing, viewing photos, some apps like Photoshop and document editing. but it comes with some light bleeds and dynamic contrast (which I don't Like).
* it has the Nvidia Tegra 3 (1.6GHz Quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A9) with battery saving core. with 3D output via Micro HDMI and physics. and games look the best on it. Most tablets have the same Processor type even the Gloogle Nexus which means better support for android in the future.
* it has a nice keyboard dock with extra battery, USB host and SD card reader.
* it can run NTFS file format out of the box without any rooting or hacking.
* base model is $499 with 32G and 1G of DDR3 Ram.
For the SAMSUNG Galaxy Note 10.1:
* it has a great PLS TFT display (i likey), but with a 1280x800 Pixels (Me no likey)
* It comes with the S Pen (active digitizer), which makes it great for work, drawing and students.
* Base model (wifi only)is $735 with 16G and 2G of ram.
----------
so what do you think which one you would go for and why?
I'm a student and the keyboard on the infinity comes in handy a lot especially when I open my etextbooks and use the find function on certain keywords that I need to know. So I would pick the infinity.
Also I believe the wifi 16gb is 499.99 and the 32 gb is 549.99 for the note according to the rumors
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk 2
the screen of the infinity is simply amazing! the resolution is awesome and in normal usage (movies, apps, games, etc.) there is no such thing as light bleeds noticeable (even if you are searching for them)
the s-pen from the galaxy note 10.1 is not that great. I have a samsung galaxy note (phablet) and use the pen not really often. i'm also a little bit dissapointed because the pen isn't that accurate as i thought. I have the infiity and bought a cheap pen for it. that is at least the same in accuracy, i think even better. the advantage of the s-pen would be the additional button for special functions. but i noticed that it's not really a must have. I use the pen button not really often. on the note (phablet) you have to use it because otherwhise you are not able to use the back or menue button (no onscreen buttons).
I would definitly go with the infinity
I hope this helped
Perhaps this is indeed the most closest competition Infinity has on the market right now/soon.
Why NOT galaxy note 10.1.
1. Screen - In all honesty, if this unit had HD screen I might have actually considered this over the Infinity. But no HD screen is a deal breaker.
2. Price - If its really that expensive, the price will likely to either go down quickly or you will see newer better device with cheaper price tag and regret how much you paid.
3. Samsung - Horrible update. With fancy split screen, this will even get worse. One may think 4.1 Jellybean is just a minor update so good chance Samsung may push sooner than it was on ICS BUT what about next Android OS? You have to either wait almost full year or may not even be supported who knows. Whereas, ASUS have the best tracking record on this regard and now with Nexus 7, they will keep having newer android OS. As long as Nexus 7 can be updated, I am sure Transformer prime, infinity and TF300 can.
Good things about 10.1 but reason why NOT still deal breaker
1. The multiscreen function is great; however, it is not free for all. Only handful of application are supported. As someone else previously posted, there is already application that allows you to watch video while you doing other things. Though I like the idea of able to browse while do something else like read ebook. But I don't think this is even possible on the galaxy note either as ebook reader is not one of those split screen supported app.
2. S-pen. I owned couple Windows based tablet with Wacom digitizers. They were great BUT still nothing is same as pen and paper. Perhaps galaxy note 10.1 may be the one, but I highly doubt. Plus nowaday, typing is much faster than writing for most of us.
3. 2GB RAM. Impressive decision here. However, as pretty much all Android devices at this point are 1GB and nothing really pushing to its limit yet, the chance we see anything different by having 2GB is low except you may be able to do more multitasks than usual but that will drain battery.
Truly better on Galaxy note 10.1
1. Battery Life. Simply Infinity's battery life is problem. So galaxy note 10.1 tramps it.
2. GPU. Though CPU is compatible between 2, GPU benchmark on the Galaxy note 10.1 is superior to that of Infinity by a quite margin. However, I am not certain if we will see anything specific to really utilize this power. My belief is developers will focus on the most common spec, which for tablet likely be the nexus 7. If so, Infinity will certainly not have issue. However, having said this, who knows my huge PDF may open much quicker and smoother on the Galaxy Note.

Actually, there is a great "windowed" browser available too - it's called "OverSkreen" - highly recommend it! The same developer also makes a floating calculator, video player (as you already mentioned), terminal emulator and one or two more. There is also a note-taking app (very basic) that is "windowed" - it's called Hovernote. Definitely check out Overskreen though!

i'd have to disagree. samsung has less defects and problems than asus on tablets according to forum posts and my experience. i went through 4 og transformers before i gave up. i almost got a prime until i saw all the issues still going on with asus tablets. and of course some of the same issues are still here for their latest flagship tablet (bleed, dock draining spontaneously...). the one i have has developed both bleed and the clicking (both of which developed on all my OG tf after 3 days). since i don't see the bleed unless i'm in a dark room with full brightness (something i never do in actual use) it's not really an issue. plus at full brightness in daylight it's not noticeable either. the click is a bit annoying though. in my transfomers the click was because the screen was separating.
samsung's support for the hardware is piss poor however. and sammy's aren't as popular as the tf's dev support isn't as active also.

couldnt find it...seems like they removed it from playstore maybe?
I had actually considered waiting for this tablet, but based on all the feedback I read about how they never update their stuff, and we are already scheduled for JB, I went with the Asus.
I am still curious though, so I posted here....

Have a look.
i think i may go with the note because im a engineering student. i just need a tablet that can take notes (lots of formulas and graphs) and do web browsing. however i do have a lot of text books in pdf so the FHD will be nice.
externally - the infinity wins but its not like the note is butt ugly
internally - the note wins, benchmarks proves it and it comes with 2 gigs of ram. does the android need it? who cares, the more the better.
build quality - note: general consensus says samsung is the best out of the androids tablets and no one has complained about the build of the note. the infinity does have a few, but so far they havent manifested into sometime you really need to worry about. some people have gotten a perfect infinity though.
FHD - well for me as long as i dont expose myself too much to that high of a resolution i wont really notice 1200*800. Did anyone complain about the prime's resolution when it came out (at the moment more ppi than the ipad 2)? people just got spoiled, but it would be nice (ive seen the differences and it looks great). the note uses pls screen (samsungs version of ips) which isnt too bad and has nice coloring.
i/o - doesn't exists in samsungs world. i know the .26 fixed it for the most part (funny, i notice that after that update the infinity forum got a little less active)
updates - asus wins hands down but from all the reviews on the note its working perfectly fine out of the box. its not like jellybean is going to make it 3 times faster, the note is already fast on ics. keep in mind samsung makes the cpu and the tablet which may explain why their tablet are so much more fluid. alot of people are betting on jellybean to fix the io problem on the infinity but its not for sure.
speakers - the note has two speakers that is on the front pointed towards you.
keyboard - depends on the person, i will mainly need a tablet to write on and if i were to ever need a keyboard i can always use a bluetooth keyboard.
bluetooth - some people are having issues on their infinity with audio sync. the note doesnt have that and has aptx, an audio codec that improves the quality of the sound it is streaming (youll need an aptx compliant receiver though).
ir - the ir on the note is convenient for my time off being lazy on the couch web browsing while watching tv.
spen - some have complained about their experience on the orginal note but reviews has said samsung has improved it on the note 10.1. ive played with the orginal note and didnt have anything to complain about on the writing experience. at the moment no additional accessories can mimic an active digitizer (the cregle pen for ipad does look promising though)
gaming - even though the note has a better gpu, nvidia seems to have a lot of developers by the balls. hence, the tegra 3 gaming apps so the infinity may have a better gaming longevity if you want to get the fullest out of some games.
developers - asus diffidently has the most support from the community. although one main developer of CyanogenMod has given up on the infinity
as it stands (my opinion),
infinity: beautiful and expensive ereader and if you're a man that gambles, youll appreciate it more if you get a good one. gaming is better on it but there has been complaints about freezes (may be due to io) so thats kind of counterintuitive. betting that jb will fix io is too much for me.
but if the fhd and aluminum frame is really that important and you can overlook the possible issues of the infinity, get the infinity. hopefully all the complaints on the infinity are just from a select few and you will be bless with a perfect one.
note 10.1: a replacement for paper and pen and peace-and-mind it will work perfectly out of the box. in the end the only downside i see on note is not having a full hd but that shouldn't really matter. at the moment fhd is diffidently a luxury feature, on an already luxury item. if you are going to be doing a lot of writing and just want it to work right out of the box and not really deal with custom roms, get the note. if you want peace and mind on quality build and io, get the note.
right now im at 60 on the note, 40 on the infinity. but in the end it will really depend on the price. the early releases of the note are pretty expensive but that's usually how it is until the official release of the product has been revealed. theres no real official word from samsung saying that there will be a wifi only version and whether how much any of the models will cost. the price will determine which one i buy forsure.
Nobody seems to mention that Samsung Note also has calling feature, u can make calls from Note directly.
and Infinity has micro HDMI port. which samsung doesn't but u can use the MHL feature

you can make calls from pretty much any tablet. All you need is a google voice number and/or GrooveIP.

You try to convince yourself that the GNote 10.1 is better than the TF700, Denniegst.
I show you.
"i think i may go with the note because im a engineering student. i just need a tablet that can take notes (lots of formulas and graphs) and do web browsing. however i do have a lot of text books in pdf so the FHD will be nice."
I am an engineering student too, if I need to calculate / take notes with formulas / graphs, paper and pencil is much better for those rough copy. I don't need to buy GNote 10.1 for 500$ to make rough copy. But when I travel, or when I am somewhere else, I need something to write my report, with a physical keyboard and more battery (TF700).
Moreover, I am a student and I like watching movies / TV series, Full HD is much better. With a mini Boombox that's awesome ! The Full HD is also very good to do web browsing, I don't want to go back to something less then HD !! :silly:
I really suggest you to take TF700... I know S-Pen seems funny, but you would only use it for Draw Something App, and maybe to have fun with your friends on S-Note.
About hardware, TF700 is very strong, for some years (even with Full HD games + PS3 gamepad).
"externally, internally, and build quality..."
Subjectives views. As you wish. Benchmarks are meaningless, you can't compare Full HD with non-HD tablet. But both GNote & TF700 are
"FHD - well for me as long as i dont expose myself too much to that high of a resolution i wont really notice 1200*800. The note uses pls screen (samsungs version of ips) which isnt too bad and has nice coloring."
I won't go back to 1200*800 or HD now. Full HD is the best, for multimedia or even for web browsing, or games, or ... everything. :good:
"i/o and updates"
TF700 has no problem here. I don't know about GNote. But as you said, ASUS wins.
About updates, you can't say that Jelly Bean isn't going to make it 3 times faster, that's not the point. That's about fixing issues. And if you were @2.3.6 for example, you know that you would like to be @4.0. If you were @4.0, you would like to play with 4.1 or more.
"speakers and keyboard"
Both things called "accessories". But, TF700 has more than an accessories because his keyboard is perfectly suitable for it, with a battery. For example, I'm going to have 7 hours plane, that will be a good help.
Speakers are tablet speakers... if you really do care about this, I suggest mini BoomBox, or Jambox ($$$).
About the battery, we can't believe Samsung or ASUS numbers, the community reports are good. I don't know them, but TF700 has a good thing : NVidia 4+1 processors. When you put "Battery Saving" mode, there is only 1 processor on, you can watch 1080p movies anyway, and the battery is going on for long.
"spen"
I have a bad opinion on this, because I think that's more a gadget. I am engineering student too, and S-Pen won't help us, but it would slow down our note taking. You can have fun with Draw Something App anyway...
"gaming and developers"
As you said, NVidia seems to have a lot of developers by the balls. But I would like to talk about Full HD Gaming, it really works very good ! That's the future...
And you know that ASUS has a good community.
"a replacement for paper and pen and peace-and-mind it will work perfectly out of the box"
Of course not ! It can't replace paper and pen !! You'll see... Try to work in groups for example (engineer stuff), with a GNote... Try to write equations and talk about it with colleagues with GNote... Try to do some maths with your GNote... I can assure you that a paper + pencil is irreplaceable.
"At the moment fhd is diffidently a luxury feature, on an already luxury item. if you are going to be doing a lot of writing and just want it to work right out of the box and not really deal with custom roms, get the note. if you want peace and mind on quality build and io, get the note."
Full HD in not a luxury feature !
That's the future ! That's much easier to work on Full HD, that's much better for movies, that's much better for everything.
About "peace and mind on quality build and io", you can't know that. You will see after weeks, but ASUS is good too, in my opinion. You just try to convince yourself I think.
I think that you will buy the GNote. But I really would like to talk with you few weeks later, then few months later. We will see.
@Mike_23
"Nobody seems to mention that Samsung Note also has calling feature, u can make calls from Note directly.
and Infinity has micro HDMI port. which samsung doesn't but u can use the MHL feature "
Do you mean that you can put a SIM Card with 30$/month ?
You already have a phone. And there are application to put use your phone with your tablet if you need it. Or Viber, or Skype, ...
ASUS TF700 has everything we need for some years (HDMI, Wifi Direct, Full HD, Keyboard + battery, strong hardware, USB which support external hard drive, µSD and SD (in the keyboard), touchpad (or mouse with USB port), ..). S-Pen could be there, but it's not very important for me... I already have a capacitive pencil, and I never use it !

Yet another high score review - By Neowin

Despite all the issues raised/listed here (including myself..), Infinity still remains the best Android Tablet at least by review sites. Here is another 9/10 score review, just released yesterday.
http://www.neowin.net/news/review-asus-transformer-pad-infinity-tf700t
Very detailed review.
I am posting this so for those who feel like seeing too many negative posts, and doubting the infinity, there are certainly lots of positives on this unit. There are other tablets out there including Galaxy Note 10.1 and iPad series. They all have pros and cons.
My take is simply depends on your use, and with so many reviews giving such high score on infinity simply speaks average people would enjoy infinity over any other Android tablet on the market right now.
For me, Galaxy Note 10.1 was the biggest contender (and owned for three weeks). I ended up choosing/returning back to Infinity because Full HD is such a huge component and something I appreciate every second use (browsing web, reading ebooks, watching lecture videos). In return, I don't get as perfect stability as Galaxy Note but ANR/FC every other day is something I can tolerate. Extra 10 seconds of heavy Flash site loading I can waste. And unfortunately I can't write as fast as I type.
I agree, now that we have so many choices there never really is one great one that is good for everyone. Each person needs to start doing some of their own thinking and choose what works best for them. This is probably why we see the isheep being so driven to CrApple products because they can't make their own decisions they would rather have CrApple do it for them. So they buy whatever they put out not realizing maybe something else cheaper is a better fit for what they need. This is my late night epiphony.

The only thing I miss about the infinity is the FHD.. But Id rather have a stable machine, so it was a sacrifice I was willing to take. Bluetooth connection works so I can connect to my phone and have internet, no light bleeds, no lag on apps, class 10 micro sd 64 gb in Exfat is read, speakers are awesome. The Spen is pretty awesome, I take notes and I use the handwriting feature that gets translated to font and it keeps up with me even while writing fast and my handwriting gets sloppy. The best thing is my sloppy writing is translated into fonts and when I can easily switch back and draw figures, pictures, or diagram while note taking, the infinity cant compete with that. At this point Im happy with the note.. but I do have almost 2 months to test this beast out and see if the infinity if able to iron out its quirks with the JB update if it ever arrives within my return window..

The new JB builds in the Dev section literally make my infinity fly
With all the fancy specs, but in reality, the Infinity is a disappointment product OUT OF THE BOX. It's not worth $600 due to many issues, including user experiences and things that are not working properly. Hopefully the Jelly Bean could bring its life back to standard.

Why are you turning this in to yet ANOTHER 10.1 vs Infinity thread? There are enough of those about already.
On topic - Nice balanced review with plenty of pictures and details. In the month I've had my Infinity I haven't had any ANRs and the only app that crashes is Skype which I really can't explain, very random. Still very pleased with my purchase and looking forward to JB!

Surprisingly (in good sense), I have noticed this unit (third one) is much stable. I haven't seen ANR since firmware reset, which I had to do since suddenly I could no longer update/install some applications from the Google Play. I had one stock browser sudden close but this happened even on Galaxy Note.
I wonder if at all this time I had two defective units, or simply turning off the bloatware was the magic needed.
In any event, I can now say I love Infinity.

Should I buy one?

Hello all,
I currently have a Motorola Xoom and was thinking of selling it off and upgrading to a transformer infinity.
Looking around this seems to currently be the best android tablet and I love the idea of the dock keyboard. I have a keyboard for my Xoom but it means I have to prop the xoom up on something to be able to use it lol!
The infinity looks like a very impressive piece of kit, but I am just wondering what people's views are?
I am quite attached to my old Xoom, even though it's not the prettiest or lightest tablet around it's been worth its weight in gold and has worked with everything I have thrown at it and he battery life has also been very good. I've got my old Xoom rooted and running Jelly bean so I was wondering if the infinity was also a good solid device?
The only thing that I find annoying with my xoom is it's weight... its like carrying a brick sometimes and it's a little to heavy to hold with one hand
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk 2
if you just read around the forum here, you will find all the information you need to make your decision.
as for what i think, i really like it. the new JB update has make it run a lot smoother and the dock works wonderfully. only thing i would see that would hold you back would be the build. not quality per say (although it does seem to be an issue for some) but the fact that the xoom is built like a brick. after going from such a sturdy tablet, any and all other tablets feel pretty flimsy so that will be something you need to judge for yourself.

I had xoom at one point, and felt heavy as well. Despite the difference is only ~200g, it is significant enough to notice. In any event, Infinity is indeed for me the best tablet available at the moment. Just make sure to get it from a place where you can potentially exchange as unfortunately quality control issue exist with ASUS.
For the reasons you listed - possibly yes. However take into account that while it might be the " best android tablet", it suffers from i/o issues and the last time I had so much stuttering and response lag was when I had a Motorola defy running 2.1... and this is supposed to be the top end tablet with JB.
I just bought one (literally, today), and I'm already regretting it. I simply can't live with the stuttering and choppyness of the browsers this thing provides. It's terrible. Probably returning mine to the store.

Now that has put me off! Quite shocked to hear that, is that a common problem?
I was looking forward to getting a lighter tablet, the bulkiness and thickness of the Xoom is starting to get to me... It feels like an armoured tank! lol
I wonder if there is still stuttering and choppyness with custom ROMS? I guess I'll have to have a ready through these boards to find out some more before I decide.
Thanks for your input everyone

Is it possible to get one locally close to home?
Maybe you can buy it try it.
My Infinity has been pretty much a good experience.
I'm not a nit-picker though.
Some folks have gotten some real nasty disappointing units.
There's plenty of good along with bad if you search these forum pages.
Check the Newegg and Amazon reviews for a little more input.

Who knows what that guy has going but most people are quite satisfied with browser experience. Especially now that Project butter is running for the Infinity. Just go to test drive it for yourself. Then you will know the answer to what your looking for.

I see this posted a lot and it's true with most browsers. That said I run opera and get smooth performance with it. I used it on my xoom when everyone complained about stuttering with the same result. when I used my xoom exclusively we had pretty much the same complaints. Unfortunately the opera team has yet to scale the url bar up to the infinity resolution yet so the text is tiny.

It's not all bad. It's got a cool design, it's light, sturdy.. got some powerful specs running under the hood, seems to be able to handle heating well, great camera, the best screen ever etc.. BUT - as great as those features are, I just can't get over how non responsive everything is. Any website I try to open on the default browser takes 3-4 secs to respond, some sites cause the browser to ANR, or it would appear to be displaying a site smoothly and then it freezes for a couple of seconds while you're trying to scroll; or switching between apps with the task manager, sometimes it's smooth as butter like on my S3, sometimes you can see how much it struggles; even going over the different settings menus makes it stutter. Not to mention the delay you get trying to flip the tablet from vertical to landscape..... it really bothers me.
I'm going to see if I can get a replacement and try out a different unit, maybe mine came from a bad batch at the factory, who knows. Maybe it actually runs smooth and consistently so for other people and what I'm experiencing is a faulty model. But if these issues are common then I would advise to stay away from the tf700 until Asus has it fixed (or sadly abandons it and retries with a new tablet).

To be honest with you, I don't think exchanging for another unit will give you a better experience. What you have described is pretty much the standard performance of the TF700. The fact is that Tegra 3 is not capable of driving a full HD screen (we are still stuck with single-channel memory in 2012!!!) and thus the stuttering. The poor I/O also makes things worse. Even the JB update cannot really make the browser free from ANR, and simple tasks such as downloading files in the background will make your tf700 unresponsive. If you want full HD screens, stay far away from Tegra 3. Snapdragon S4 Pro is the way to go.
Sounds like a mixed bag then, I think I shall have to try one out first for sure...just have to find somewhere selling one locally, or maybe order one on line and try it out for a few days, if it doesn't work out I could always send it back.
I just love the design with the attachable keyboard, and I am really looking for something a lot lighter than my Xoom. I did originally look at the Transformer Prime, and then I heard about the infinity.
I am sure the Infinity is great device, the Xoom also has a bad reputation but I have had no problems with it whatsoever.
I think a shopping trip is due today to see if I can find an Infinity in stores =)

The stock browser is bugged. That's common knowledge. Other browsers work just fine without hanging. One program having an issue is not the fault of the tablet if the rest works fine.
As for the ANr. Usually you (used to) get them when an app takes a while to load. Most of those times, it works again when you get the popup. Since JB I have only had one App Not Responding error, and that was a Live Wallpaper which Playstore listed as incompatible. That was my own fault, not the Tf's.
I've not had a single speed or performance issue. Nothing lags, everything runs fast. There are some very unlucky people here, and some very lucky ones.
The only negative I've found is that developers (not the guys here) are so obsessed with the SGS3 that there's hardly anything to be found for the Tegra 3 and the massive resolution of the TF700.

I must disagree with your point about ANR. It is true that the apps will usually work again after those pop-ups, but those ANR messages should not be there in the first place. They are annoying and make me less confident about my tablet's reliability. To be 100% honest, the Infinity is the most crash-prone Android devices I have ever used. You might not believe me, but my Sensation on ICS is a lot more stable than the Infinity, and less lags at well.
For the lack of development, I guess it is expected, given the high price tag of the Infinity and the fact that it is not a popular model.

Actually, the stock browser is the least buggy for me. Can't use chrome or dolphine because they stutter so much on the tf700.
I'm happy to hear you're experiencing a fast and smooth tablet as it suggests that getting a replacement will solve it.
Either we have different definitions to "lag-free" or Asus's quality control on the tablet is so meh that its smoothness and stability vary wildly from unit to unit.
Well I decided not to go for the infinity in the end, it sure looks good but my with my budget restraints I think it's a little out of my league at the moment
I've opted for the Prime as it was a considerable lot less... at least it's lighter than my Xoom.
Thanks for all your help guys

I absolutely love my Infinity. ASUS does have quality control issues. Make sure you buy from a vendor that will allow returns if the device is defective. Mine came with a SMALL amount of light bleed, two minor scratches on the back plate, and the screen pops out of the bezel a TINY bit over the camera. These issues are annoying and it took me some time to accept them, but they don't hinder my device's performance. I would definitely recommend purchasing the Infinity, but make sure you get a good one.

Buy or Not Buy?

I'm shopping for a new tablet but before I drop $700+ (tablet & goodies) I have a few questions.
Have the I/O issues been resolved?
Seen multiple posts on multiple reviews about case cracking problems, especially when using the dock/keyboard. is this limited or a real issue people are seeing?
overall opinion? Im not buying apple anything.. so if not this tablet, which one? i want 1920 res, 64gb x 64gb storage (sd), hdmi out.. basically all the goodies.
money isnt a factor in my consideration. i want a stable product that can hold up to daily use.
appreciate your comments.

fixable but voids warranty. and then there's the poor quality control. I suggest buying from a place where you can return the tablet if you get a bad one.
I really really want to like this tablet. just I'm scared I'll get a bad one :/ (I'll be buying overseas as local Asus only distributes the one with dock and I don't need one)
there's also looking elsewhere
Buy it from best buy if u can. They honor the manufacturer warranty for a year so u can swap it out if it breaks or gets discontinued for a new model.

i dont want to buy something that i have to plan in advance for it to have problems. i dont need a tablet, i want one.. so theres no rush. it sounds like this tablet really isnt worth the money.. on paper it sounds amazing though.
single speaker on the back? is that correct?
Yea a single speaker on the right lower back side. It's am awesome tablet, I like it a lot. Still a lot better then most of the tablets out now.

so lets go real world use.. not benchmarks. what does the i/o issue really mean to me? its not going to be a file server.
youtube, gmail, web browsing, watching movies, listening to music. thats about it.
slow file xfers or actual performance issues opening/watching files?
bluetooth keyboard issues still? (lag)
network performance?

I was a original Transformer Prime owner and that thing was a nightmare! I had random reboots, screen tearing, CRAP Wifi, Non existent GPS, force closes up the ass. It as horrible. Best Buy let me exchange it after the Prime was discontinued and I got the Infinity. I have had almost NO issues with this thing. I cant remember the last time this thing reboot on me, if ever. Wifi and GPS are great. When Jelly Bean came out, they keyboard lagged a bit but ASUS quickly came out with a patch update and that was resolved. I don't really know what the I/O issue is...dont seem any issues. I use my tablet for some gaming, browsing the net, gmail/email, music and youtube and its been nothing but great for me. Honestly, Buy the tablet, if you dont like it...return it within the 30 day period. I highly recommend this tablet over the Ipads and most android tablets. If you dont like it, check out the nexus 10...

You tap some link in the browser or you want to scroll and nothing happens for several seconds.
"Browser is not responding, do you want to close it?"
Sometimes it also closes by itself because of some unfixed bug.
Of course that does not happen all the time, otherwise I would have thrown my TF700 out of the window already, but it happens too often to not notice. And that is already after unlocking (voiding warranty) and installing CleanROM. Trying to use some Data-to-SD solution failed because the MicroSD interface is unreliable (at least with my SanDisk 32 GB UHS-1 card) and hangs after some time or produces lots of I/O errors in the log.
Do not buy this tablet if you want a mostly problem-free device.
The nexus 10 is a decent tablet.. but the lack of external ports bothers me. No sd card.. and i believe no hdmi. both deal breakers for me. ive read that the toshiba excite 10 is doing pretty well (and has amazing sound).
ill probably buy this tablet, i didnt see any upcoming asus tablets anytime soon. saw rumors of a 13ish inch tablet, but no date listed.

I was prepared to unlock and void warranty but if doing that doesn't really fix the IO issues, I think Apple will get my money again. I've looked at the Huawei FHD but the lack of community support is a downside. if ever the tab has problems, then I'm stuck. I've looked at the Acer A700 but it's looks cheap and the lower CPU speed is a negative of course.
:/
anything quad core and faster then 1.2 is fine with me.. a 1920 screen is important as is storage. just not a lot of options on the table there.
might just buy a nexus for now and gift it when something really nice comes around. im not interested in a windows or a ios option at this time.
I have the 700, prime, and nexus 10. My prime after latest JB is actually quite useful now. Rarely I get any ANR nowadays but still do happen from time to time. Theres still def some IO issue still. The 700 on JB I find not as smooth as the Prime and I never get any ANR but it does lag some when I'm trying to do things too fast like open a bunch of stuff one after another. I have to let it catch up. From what I hear about putting custom rom is it will eliminate most IO but not completely. The nexus 10 however is a beast. No lag, no ANRs, I can open a lot of apps and def no IO issue. The only thing I dont like is the screen is LCD which makes it sort of dull looking since the black levels arent as good as the Asus. Also lack of keyboard dock which extends battery and memory and makes typing easy. Charge times are too long with micro usb.
For basic browsing, watching movies, casual gaming, then the tf700 is a good device. Better contrast screen and I can barely tell the difference in sharpness between it and the nexus 10. But I think the keyboard dock and its features is what sets it apart from the nexus 10.

Actually it is truly amazing. The vast majority are flawless...most people that post non-development related stuff here are posting complaints...looking for sympathy or corroboration, or better yet, solutions.
Unlocked, rooted and ROMed, this is the fastest tablet I've ever used. That includes most that are not in my signature as well as the ones I own.
I found a 32GB Champagne tablet on Adorama for $499 WITH keyboard. Just recently posted a new thread in the General section with a link if anyone's interested. I paid over $100 more at Best Buy for a Grey one that I'll be returning.
If you take the risk and root it, then you should get this tablet. If you expect a problem free experience from stock ROM, stay away. I only use my tf700 for browsing, reading books, YouTube.. and it's so sluggish and unresponsive. You tap the address bar, lag until the keyboard pops up. You then decide to go back to home screen, 2-3 secs until it registers your choice, then a couple more second to redraw the home screen. This doesn't happen all the time but even occasionally is way way too much. Also forget about doing anything while you're downloading or updating apps, it basically freezes the tablet.
The latest update improved things somewhat but not enough. I was planning to hold off getting clean ROM until after the rumored upcoming 4.2 update, but this is so annoying I'm losing my patience.

Just wondering if you happen to have a nexus 10 as I dont see it in your signature. The nexus 10 is a beast IMO compared to my nexus 7 with cleanrom. Games are super fluid and I can run a lot of things in the background and it doesn't really slow down. I assume tf700 with cleanrom is going to be similar to nexus 7 with cleanrom.
