[Q] Simultaneous voice and data - Verizon Droid Charge

Can anyone confirm whether or not the Charge is capable of simultaneous voice and data?
If so, is it while on 4G only, or, like the Thunderbolt, can it do while in a non-4G area?
Searched around Google and get conflicting reports, so hoping someone here can clear up.
Thanks.

The Revolution is the only one so far that can do VoLTE, as for the Charge I have been looking to see if it has SVDO like the ThunderBolt. I had thought at one point it did but now I can't find that info.

No voice and data on 3g. It only works on lte.

the tbolt was supposed to be the only one of the initial launch lte phones that could do voice/data on 3g simultaneously

True VoiceOverLTE ("VoLTE") does not exist yet. Should be functional in late 2012.

Correct, Verizon isn't supporting it yet, but the LG Revolution has completed the first test call and it is capable of VoLTE, but again until Verizon supports it, its mute.

Oh, really? I actually wasn't aware of that.

(No sarcasm!)

No sarcasm received , but here is an article about it http://www.slashgear.com/verizon-co...er-lte-call-on-a-commercial-network-09132406/ but the long term is where the focus has to be on getting these features in every LTE phone.

You are correct, the Thunderbolt is the only phone on Verizon that can talk and web over 3G. I thought I would miss it by giving up my Thunderbolt to my wife but southern California where I live is well blanketed with 4G and I'm in LTE coverage most of my daily usage.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm really back and forth on whether I want one or not. I've always used the "no simultaneous voice and data" as a reason not to switch to Verizon. The Thunderbolt took away that excuse, so I took the plunge, but I miss the SAMOLED screens, especially when outside.
I probably don't use voice/data at the same time as much as I think, but I know the times in the past when a friend on Verizon couldn't get a picture or email I sent while we were talking on the phone were very annoying.
Verizon's keeping me from getting one anyways, when the heck are they going to release the darn thing?

What part of SoCal you in? LTE is strong in most places I frequent, but some places, like Santa Clarita = no LTE. My work takes me to that area often enough that it's a concern (for example, I'm on a project near Magic Mountain for the next two weeks).

Yeah, tomorrow is the "official" release, but they got the OK to sell/activate them today! Go for it if your store is still open!!!

I work for VZW lol can only buy mine online. So waiting till midnight
I went home for the day before they sent out the email giving the OK to sell today lol

It does indeed. http://www.technobuffalo.com/ jon4lakers on YT:

1:45 mark for the impatient. I still can't stand the damn physical buttons. But I'm so torn on the LTE. Stay and play with GSM and hope for LTE in 6-12 months or move now to CDMA, blahhhh!, and play with the future in LTE?

I prefer capacitative buttons too. It's the main thing I like better about the Thunderbolt so far. At least the buttons are bigger and require less force than the Droid X.

I live in Orange County which was one of the first LTE markets launched I'm currently in San Jose which has very decent LTE coverage. I did notice on my drive through Santa Clarita the 4G was spotty. I'm sure that will be improving shortly.

[Q] No 4G until May?

I stopped by a corp store on Monday and compared speeds of the Inspire to my Captivate. After getting same speeds on both phones I spoke to the store manager that assured me 4G would be operational the following day. I stopped by again today and ran speed test on both devices. The Captivate actually had slightly faster speeds at 2.77 up and .37 down while the Inspire did 2.61 down and same(.37) up. When I asked CS rep about 4G today, I was told that 4G will not be implemented until May. What BS! They are advertising 4G everywhere as if it is running now. How many of you are getting 4G speeds? Anyone hear anything different regarding time frame?
I am strongly considering the Inspire and am looking for a few good reasons to purchase it! Aside from no 4G speeds until May, I have read about, crappy speaker, choppy video playback, poor call quality, crappy camera, and terrible battery life. I have owned the Aria and I gotta say, some of it sounds familiar. Any input will be appreciated.
i was told they're start rolling out 4G in march but i guess it might depend on your area, i'm in chicago.
edit: my speaker is fine, louder then my iphone, excellent call quality, camera is fine, only thing i noticed is when sending a mms, it compresses it too much. batter life seems fine, i've been using it more then my phone (setting it up and playing with it) and its comparable considering the huge screen over a iphone.

Click on the "coverage" button on the bottom, that should show you where the 4G coverage is.

Being in DFW has its advantages.
Not many, but enough.
Thanks for the responses. I do see that there is no 4G coverage for my area listed on the map.
I guess I just have a problem being told by a store rep on Monday, that there would be 4G coverage, in my area, on Tuesday. I guess they are kept informed about as much as we are, or are just saying whatever customer wants to hear in order to sell a phone??? 4G was MY primary reason to upgrade phones now as opposed to later.
Oh well, I am glad I didn't grab the Inspire right away. I did that with the Captivate and well................... Actually, I have no issues with the Captivate after having it replaced with a new unit.
The FCC should launch an investigation into AT&Ts deceptive advertising. They are advertising a 4g network that doesn't exist for the most part.

where is verizon when you need them? this BS about backhaul not implemented yet! if backhaul is not implemented yet, then dont call it hspa+/4G! cus you dont have hspa+/4G yet!
that is like saying we're the first in the world to have 5G!!!!! then telling people when we upgraded our networks! haha
btw: i'm in bayarea, CA which att map shows it DOES have hspa+/4g coverage, but my speed is the same! never over 3mb! i'm on rooted phone with attn1 rom. maybe i get higher speed with stock rom?
You won't get true 4G until they give out the 4G sim cards. I live south of Dallas and the most i've gotten is 4.3 down and 1.39 up.

The 4G sims are to be compatible with LTE. They have nothing to do with data speeds on hspa+. You can use your old sim and it won't make a difference. They have not "flipped the switch" on it yet in most areas so we should see differences soon.
I got a new sim card as well when I purchased mines on launch day but it says 3g on it. Correct me if I'm wrong but the Inspire 4G isn't a true "4G" phone. I kind of knew this going in. It doesn't have LTE hardware (which is where everything is going). It has software tweaks that enables HDSPA+ which gives 4G speeds, but not real 4G.
I have to admit that my HSUPA enabled Captivate was faster in both DL and UP but the Inspire isn't bad and has a more consistent connection. It's also a much better phone overall but that's another story.
Today the Oaklawn Dallas AT&T store manager told me that they were not going to "flip the national hspa+ switch" for a month and a half. There is testing in some markets but not Dallas, the AT&T headquarters city. Per an internal email he showed me, the new SIM card is necessary for LTE. It also said 4g data must be enabled on the "user account configuration". My Aria data is configured for my old Blackberry and works fine so I question this. BTW, at the store my geeked out Aria (thanks attn1) had almost double the download speed of the demo Inspire. The response: speed tests are unreliabe, haha!
this is just thought but look for speed increase with the release of the atrix. this is obviously going to be there flagship phone for 4g. there has been no advertisement whatsoever for the inspire. I think for some reason that htc has a exclusive deal with these carriers to be the first 4g phone. Att has been advertising the atrix since January starting with that teaser and when on their website the atrix was on their main page with not even the mention of the inspire. Maybe they will turn hspa+ on once atrix is released tuesday. I wouldnt be surprised if the fooled the atrix people too. Ill keep the inspire but i do think its pretty cheap releasing phones before the network is ready.
ATT has done this over and over. First capped the max data plan. Now they rename their network to 4G and sell phones and cant even max out their network speed. I mean I wonder why they dont get in trouble for this kinda crap. Sprint released evo 4g with a bang with wimax ready to go, and AT&T cant even launch their fake 4g right.
They should be sued for faking the H+ symbol on top, but I dont sue people unless my life depends on it. I am just going to return this phone if thunderbolt comes out before my 30 days are up.
Why show h+ symbol when the network settings show you are only connected to HSDPA not HSDPA+. come out and say when you fake 4g network will be ready. Their graph says I have 4G all over my area up to like 60 miles, yet my crappy hacked captivate was getting the same speed as inspire plus 10 times better upload speeds. I get around 150kb upload speed.

I think it will be good for us if AT&T decides to add their frequencies to T-Mobile's towers. The purchase is expected to take a year and I wonder if it will be blocked by the SEC.
Does that mean AT&T wireless can actually get worse, now that they will (supposedly) gobble up t-mobile?

Well in "the old days" I would have seen the SEC letting this go about as far as I can throw it, but after changing the laws to allow comcast to become the mega-carrier they are, they'll let this one through as well.
Very unfortunate given that T-Mobile at least has drive to create a decent product.

In my experience, T-Mo had far LESS than AT&T, tho it's been 5 years since I had T-Mo. With T-Mo, they have so many roaming agreements you can drive across the country and have fairly reliable service the entire way. Not the case with Big Red or Big Mama Blue.

Big pink and big blue got hitched! LOL
I'm sure T-mobile customers are jumping for joy after they read this news.
I'm seeing this as being one step closer to getting rid of CDMA.
I wish Cell Phones worked the way they do in Europe. We have too much fragmentation and carrier control in the US.
I have a friend on T-Mobile and he likes the data speeds but the coverage of phone service itself apparently isnt that great all i hear about his how much he complains!!!
Here is some more info from engadget

Edit: I also read somewhere that it may take a year for this to complete. So no new changes for a while.
NICE!!!!!
I have been to places where there are only tmobile signals! (i did a network search, only tmobile pop up!), but i'm unable to connect cus att wont allow it! i guess this merger will change that!
this means that now after it is complete, we will be able to access t-mobiles hspa+ network with our inspires right? this is great news if we can b/c t-mobiles roll out of hspa+ is far greater than at&t's as of now

The reason we are able to do it on 3G as well is because the Thunderbolt has two different antennas. One is for the LTE/3G and one is for the 1X/Text messaging. Because it has the two different ones that's why we will be able to talk and surf. The Bionic may be cancelled because the antennae is not working well with the tegra. And the Samsung Charge will only be able to talk and surf in a 4G area. If you are on 3G you won't be able to talk and surf. So it's a cool feature that hTc has right now. The information is based off of the review of the ThunderBolt below with a couple of bits from what I have been reading.

I just realized this yesterday, and it made me SO happy! I've got mad love for my T-Bolt right now!
blackmanx (Twitter's most popular Verizon network engineer) said it was because the Bolt uses SVDO instead of EVDO for it's 3G. This makes it possible to talk and surf at the same time over 3G. So the Bolt is only using the one radio when talking and surfing on 3G
As for 4G, LTE uses a separate radio, but LTE allows for this simultaneous function anyway
And no, the Verizon iPhone very much cannot use this functionality, nor can any other phone currently on Verizon's lineup. You need to go to a GSM network if you want this on any other phone when using 3G

So does this mean that our calls don't ever go through 3GEV or LTE, and always 1x?
Reason I ask, is in the 2 weeks that I had the TBolt, the clarity of my calls seem inferior compared to my nexus one on T-Mo 3G, like the person on the other end sounds muffled. Not sure about others, but thats been my experience so far.

AT&T LTE Network Going Live This Sunday

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/att_lte_network_going_live_sunday
The cities included in this initial wave are Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Although users in those metro areas will still have very few LTE devices to choose from. Unlike Verizon, which has multiple LTE handsets, AT&T has no phones compatible with the new network. AT&T launched a data stick and a portable hotspot for the LTE network last month. The carrier has also started selling a massively overpriced Android tablet, the HTC Jetstream.
sweet im in San Antonio for a little while, now for AT&T to get some phones for me to use !!!
Now if they could hurry up and increase the HSPA+ speeds. I'm still only getting 3.5mb download and 1mb upload in downtown Dallas.... iPhone 3gs gets about the same download speed, although only half of the upload speed.
Come to the other side of the Metroplex. Downtown Fort Worth and I am getting 5-7mb down, 1.1-1.3 up. I can't wait for the Holiday with LTE. That will be SO sweet.

As mentioned, you would need a LTE phone first. But, being an hour away from Houston, I wouldn't run out and buy one when they become available. I live in the outskirt of Houston and HSPA+ is non existent at home. In Houston where I work, as posted, I am just now seeing the true benefit of HSPA+. Probably some bottlenecks from ongoing upgrades being freed up, maybe a little congestion as well.

Knowing how AT&T operates, I'd imagine they opened up more bandwidth to the land-based lines to the area first to make sure their LTE debut went well and you're just seeing some of that extra bandwidth.

I'm not as stupid as you. I know when I'm on wifi. Here is the proof.
Here are some from earlier today. The first two were indoors, a large metal building with offices above on the second floor. The first run was bad, only 2800kbps, but I did hit 4916kbps on the second. I then went outdoors and tested a lil slower than yesterday, but not by much, 6485-7767kbps. I know we can't put too much stock in the Speed Test app, but there is some consistency and I'm getting much higher runs than I had been. Also, it seems to be reading my wifi at home with some accuracy.

Show me where I made that statement. I stated that since the LTE launch, my data speeds have suddenly increased and I'm finally seeing true hspa+, and that is a fact. I provided a couple of possible reasons for this, as someone else cited a possibility as well. I know what you saw. You saw the hosted by Comcast in the screenshot. Lol. Anybody with half a brain would know that there would have been a wifi icon in the status bar if I was on wifi. Next time you open your mouth, try not to put your foot in it. Your little signature says it all. Just because you are in a crummy area, doesn't mean it is like that everywheres.

US T-Mobile

So I have bought a HTC u11 plus and should get it today. What I have done the past week is check my bands at the places I visit most. And while driving. I used lte discovery app to help me with this and some Google searches. In my findings band 2 is hardly used when I am at home or driving. My 1+5 is always on band 4 or 12. At home is the only place where it is on band 2 but it switches to 4 and uses this mostly but I use wifi calling at home due to coverage sucking at my house. I did a Google search on band 2 and it is not very good around my areas. So people with TMobile USA should be fine to get this phone and use here. Also my cousin has a HTC 10 from overseas which has less bands enabled and has never had an issue with lte or call connection with TMobile. Once I get the phone I will do more testing for TMobile folks. Let me know your results if you have any.

Lol i got the notification on this and saw CJ. For a minute i was like is he referring to me? Who the heck is CJ lol i laughed after i figured it out. . Anyway so after having the phone in my hands with all of its beauty and awesomeness. I could not take it anymore. This phone works great if you have a wifi and data connection all the time. But for people who still makes voice phone calls it is the worst.. so bad i put it on ebay yesterday. I got so frustrated the other day. I was trying to make a call and when you do, it drops down to 2g,3g. The call qualty on that is horrible. The calls always dropped and when i did have a good connection the quality was horrible. Half the time i would not get text messages and not everyone uses whats app and that is what i was trying to use because i always will have data. No VOLTE which i missed no WIfi calling which does come in handy. So i kept looking and band 2 does more than LTE I believe that band 2 also deals with AWS which is needed for calling. Man i tried.... i tried to put up with it here in the states. The phone itself is just amazing the Pixel that got away is what i call it. So if you are here in the states Dont buy it unless you have data connection and everyone has like data messaging or calling for a strong data connection. I am really sad and dissapointed at HTC the phone i have been waiting for since the HTC sensation 4g. Hopes this helps.

Well, crap. Thank you for conducting the experiment. Yeah, it's the Pixel 2XL WITH an sd card slot, which is what I want, except apparently without Band 2, the thing's hobbled. I was gonna install the Google HDR+ camera app and have it all! Damn.
I got my hopes up because I saw reports of people bringing the Exynos Note 8 over here and getting it to work, but IT has Band 2! Seriously, how tough is it to add these bands! Do people want to sell phones or not?!!
Anyway, thanks again. An answer is an answer, even if it's not the one I was hoping for.
And yeah, if you're reclaiming that term, I completely respect that, but I still gotta go with CJ.
Sucks to hear that. I've been using my HTC U11+ in the Bay Area for about two weeks now and so far it's been absolutely flawless. Not a single issue finding LTE or dropping calls.

I've had the phone since late December and have had the same experience in the greater Baltimore area. Must be different bands/stronger network in our areas.

Sorry for the delayed response, but I got it from Amazon. Took about 4-5 days to receive it even though Amazons system said 2 weeks. I also just noticed that it's a decent amount cheaper now as well compared to when I bought it in December by over $100.

I agree with this I've had zero issues so far since getting this phone. Only had it for a day now but prior to I ran LTE Discover on my HTC U11 and saw I very rarely used Band 2 (San Diego). After some digging I saw how Band 2 works on T-Mobile and I'm OK without it. I'll be in Vegas in a week so I'll be curious how it holds up there, though I don't really expect hiccups. The one thing I do want to get back is VOLTE/VOWIFI.

I'm not far from you and I just picked up my U11+ from Swappa. Does this phone actually read "4G LTE" when in LTE service area? I have not seen it yet. I have the Nexus 6 and a Note 5 and both have had that when in and around Maryland. THanks for replying when you do.

No, it just says 4G. However, when using apps such as Speed Test by Ookla, it says I'm connected to "LTE T-Mobile", and the speed test are roughly what I was getting on my previous iPhone 6S Plus.

Thank you. I did install LTE Discovery and was able to get information on what band I am on and more. It keeps flipping back to 'H' loads which is made me wondering what I might be doing wrong if it is not in the phone itself. I am in a strong 4G LTE area for work (base) and home. My Nexus 6 and my Note 5 always read 4G LTE in an area as such. I still love this phone even though it's not 2 weeks old yet.
I'm tempted to get this for an upgrade from my HTC 10. I don't care too much about the dual camera for the HTC 12+, plus I want it in Red which might not even come out in the US. So with the bigger battery 3,900 mah, about $200 less and the red color now. Would this be a good buy if I typically travel around the east coast?
I have one I purchased on a recent trip overseas to Taiwan. My carrier here in the US is Tmobile and I only have connectivity issues in rural areas. Can someone point me to a stock ROM from Tmobile that would be compatible with this phone?
Thanks.
