The cities included in this initial wave are Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Although users in those metro areas will still have very few LTE devices to choose from. Unlike Verizon, which has multiple LTE handsets, AT&T has no phones compatible with the new network. AT&T launched a data stick and a portable hotspot for the LTE network last month. The carrier has also started selling a massively overpriced Android tablet, the HTC Jetstream.
sweet im in San Antonio for a little while, now for AT&T to get some phones for me to use !!!
Now if they could hurry up and increase the HSPA+ speeds. I'm still only getting 3.5mb download and 1mb upload in downtown Dallas.... iPhone 3gs gets about the same download speed, although only half of the upload speed.
Come to the other side of the Metroplex. Downtown Fort Worth and I am getting 5-7mb down, 1.1-1.3 up. I can't wait for the Holiday with LTE. That will be SO sweet.

I know the Inspire is not a LTE phone, but just launching the network upgrade has helped me to see vastly improved data speeds. I also know the Speed test app is not accurate, but I have never seen it pull these kind of speeds, especially consistently.
Well, I would like if it came out in Madison soon... (and when AT&T has more LTE Android phones)
Ok I live an hour away from Houston. Do you think I would still be getting LTE? Also do we need a new sim card or anything or does it automaticly happends?

As mentioned, you would need a LTE phone first. But, being an hour away from Houston, I wouldn't run out and buy one when they become available. I live in the outskirt of Houston and HSPA+ is non existent at home. In Houston where I work, as posted, I am just now seeing the true benefit of HSPA+. Probably some bottlenecks from ongoing upgrades being freed up, maybe a little congestion as well.

Knowing how AT&T operates, I'd imagine they opened up more bandwidth to the land-based lines to the area first to make sure their LTE debut went well and you're just seeing some of that extra bandwidth.

I'm not as stupid as you. I know when I'm on wifi. Here is the proof.
Here are some from earlier today. The first two were indoors, a large metal building with offices above on the second floor. The first run was bad, only 2800kbps, but I did hit 4916kbps on the second. I then went outdoors and tested a lil slower than yesterday, but not by much, 6485-7767kbps. I know we can't put too much stock in the Speed Test app, but there is some consistency and I'm getting much higher runs than I had been. Also, it seems to be reading my wifi at home with some accuracy.

Show me where I made that statement. I stated that since the LTE launch, my data speeds have suddenly increased and I'm finally seeing true hspa+, and that is a fact. I provided a couple of possible reasons for this, as someone else cited a possibility as well. I know what you saw. You saw the hosted by Comcast in the screenshot. Lol. Anybody with half a brain would know that there would have been a wifi icon in the status bar if I was on wifi. Next time you open your mouth, try not to put your foot in it. Your little signature says it all. Just because you are in a crummy area, doesn't mean it is like that everywheres.
Check my screenshot of prior tests and tell me if you see any improvement compared to yesterday and today. LOL.

I'm good. I just don't appreciate someone implying I'm either stupid or I'm a liar. It certainly isn't inconceivable that while AT&T was building the LTE network here in Houston, they were improving the backhaul for hspa+. Whatever the source of the improvement, I'm thrilled to see true hspa+ speeds. It is something I never expected to see with my Inspire.

I stopped by a corp store on Monday and compared speeds of the Inspire to my Captivate. After getting same speeds on both phones I spoke to the store manager that assured me 4G would be operational the following day. I stopped by again today and ran speed test on both devices. The Captivate actually had slightly faster speeds at 2.77 up and .37 down while the Inspire did 2.61 down and same(.37) up. When I asked CS rep about 4G today, I was told that 4G will not be implemented until May. What BS! They are advertising 4G everywhere as if it is running now. How many of you are getting 4G speeds? Anyone hear anything different regarding time frame?
I am strongly considering the Inspire and am looking for a few good reasons to purchase it! Aside from no 4G speeds until May, I have read about, crappy speaker, choppy video playback, poor call quality, crappy camera, and terrible battery life. I have owned the Aria and I gotta say, some of it sounds familiar. Any input will be appreciated.
i was told they're start rolling out 4G in march but i guess it might depend on your area, i'm in chicago.
edit: my speaker is fine, louder then my iphone, excellent call quality, camera is fine, only thing i noticed is when sending a mms, it compresses it too much. batter life seems fine, i've been using it more then my phone (setting it up and playing with it) and its comparable considering the huge screen over a iphone.

Being in DFW has its advantages.
Not many, but enough.
Thanks for the responses. I do see that there is no 4G coverage for my area listed on the map.
I guess I just have a problem being told by a store rep on Monday, that there would be 4G coverage, in my area, on Tuesday. I guess they are kept informed about as much as we are, or are just saying whatever customer wants to hear in order to sell a phone??? 4G was MY primary reason to upgrade phones now as opposed to later.
Oh well, I am glad I didn't grab the Inspire right away. I did that with the Captivate and well................... Actually, I have no issues with the Captivate after having it replaced with a new unit.
The FCC should launch an investigation into AT&Ts deceptive advertising. They are advertising a 4g network that doesn't exist for the most part.

The 4G sims are to be compatible with LTE. They have nothing to do with data speeds on hspa+. You can use your old sim and it won't make a difference. They have not "flipped the switch" on it yet in most areas so we should see differences soon.
I got a new sim card as well when I purchased mines on launch day but it says 3g on it. Correct me if I'm wrong but the Inspire 4G isn't a true "4G" phone. I kind of knew this going in. It doesn't have LTE hardware (which is where everything is going). It has software tweaks that enables HDSPA+ which gives 4G speeds, but not real 4G.
I have to admit that my HSUPA enabled Captivate was faster in both DL and UP but the Inspire isn't bad and has a more consistent connection. It's also a much better phone overall but that's another story.
Today the Oaklawn Dallas AT&T store manager told me that they were not going to "flip the national hspa+ switch" for a month and a half. There is testing in some markets but not Dallas, the AT&T headquarters city. Per an internal email he showed me, the new SIM card is necessary for LTE. It also said 4g data must be enabled on the "user account configuration". My Aria data is configured for my old Blackberry and works fine so I question this. BTW, at the store my geeked out Aria (thanks attn1) had almost double the download speed of the demo Inspire. The response: speed tests are unreliabe, haha!
this is just thought but look for speed increase with the release of the atrix. this is obviously going to be there flagship phone for 4g. there has been no advertisement whatsoever for the inspire. I think for some reason that htc has a exclusive deal with these carriers to be the first 4g phone. Att has been advertising the atrix since January starting with that teaser and when on their website the atrix was on their main page with not even the mention of the inspire. Maybe they will turn hspa+ on once atrix is released tuesday. I wouldnt be surprised if the fooled the atrix people too. Ill keep the inspire but i do think its pretty cheap releasing phones before the network is ready.
ATT has done this over and over. First capped the max data plan. Now they rename their network to 4G and sell phones and cant even max out their network speed. I mean I wonder why they dont get in trouble for this kinda crap. Sprint released evo 4g with a bang with wimax ready to go, and AT&T cant even launch their fake 4g right.
They should be sued for faking the H+ symbol on top, but I dont sue people unless my life depends on it. I am just going to return this phone if thunderbolt comes out before my 30 days are up.
Why show h+ symbol when the network settings show you are only connected to HSDPA not HSDPA+. come out and say when you fake 4g network will be ready. Their graph says I have 4G all over my area up to like 60 miles, yet my crappy hacked captivate was getting the same speed as inspire plus 10 times better upload speeds. I get around 150kb upload speed.
I've heard everything. From you'll need a different Sim to get 4G speeds, you'll need to change your data plan, and at&t hasn't launched 4G yet. What's going on? I personal can't get speeds over 2.2 mbps and from what I've read nobody else can either. Whats the real deal here?

I also was given a new Sim card, a bit different then the one I had for my Captivate.
I am getting anywhere from 2.5mb to 6mb DL.
The real deal is that AT&T (well all the carriers) lied to us and the newer speeds will be rolled out whenever they feel like it.
I don't know anyone who's in the prime 4G spots who gets decent speeds (without or without the patched HSUPA).
I like others on the forums have heard many mixed things about when they'll officially be rolling the faster speeds out but for the moment we all got duped.

Kinda ****ed up!
Patience
O.k. here is the real deal... an actual answer to your question rather than simply posting my speeds.
4g is being rolled out in several phases. Lets tackle them one at a time.
First AT&T is releasing HSPDA+ as 4G... technically it is not 4g but since T-Mobile is advertising it that way, so is AT&T. This has 2 different upgrades to make it work. 1) They had to do a software upgrade to the transmitters on the cell towers. I believe that it is either all complete or close to complete. So technically they are using a 4g network for those transmissions. However that leads to the second step. 2) They need to upgrade the physical wires feeding the towers to handle the additional speeds. This is a much more massive process and a much slower roll out. This is called backhaul and is creeping out now, tower by tower. (T-Mobile is in the same boat, and they also do not have their backhaul anywhere near done.)
Second phase is to upgrade the entire system to LTE (a true 4g) This process is not supposed to start until summer and not be significantly built out until mid - late 2012. Verizon also does not have much of their LTE network built out, and don't even have their LTE phone on the market yet (the Thunderbolt).
I still work in an area with only Edge... a little patience and it will get to you. I can tell you that even without the HSPDA+ network running, it is still a ton faster than my Tilt2.
Has anyone else had an issue with the data speed on their galaxy s 4g? I am getting "4g" but the when I run a speed test it stops a couple of times and then resumes. Maybe post up numbers of your speed tests in 4g areas?
It always seems to hesitate to hook up.

Holy crap. What am I doing wrong? Is there a firmware update or something?
I'm on whitehawkx's deodexed KC1. That test was a good one, it's usually like 10-12mbps. what area are you in? Did you have better speeds before or has it always been at that speed? It may just be your area.
But there is an update available through kies mini.
Im in Salt Lake City. Most of the area is 4g with a few spots of 3g, at least so was the map that I looked at. I just barely ran a speed test on it for the first time because I noticed that the connection was rather laggy. Do you think a new sim may solve the problem? Because I am using one that is about 3 years old or so.
Yes. Activate the new SIM the phone came with. I've been told that the older SIM's aren't quite compatible with 4g. I had my last SIM card for about 6 years when I got this phone and finally decided to use the new one. And run the test several times, the first one is always the slowest.
I'll do that and report back lol. Hopefully it will improve.
He's right, you need to use the new SIM. The old SIM is probably not using 4G tower services and still using 3G tower services.
I have just put in the new sim and it's gotten much speedier but it's still not as fast as it should be. What are your network settings?
Even though vegas was on of the first cities turned up for 4G, I've never seen crazy speeds. I'm not complaining, the speeds are always good, just nothing crazy for a phone that is capable of doing 21.1 mbps.

I am a launch day EVO 4G user and a Sprint subscriber since 1999. With the new EVO 3D 4G coming out, I am at a crossroads. I am miffed not being in a Sprint 4G area while my friends with their Tbolts are rocking it here. Even my sister with her Tmobile MyTouch 4g is getting "4G" here. But, that EVO 3D is beckoning for my technolust.
Those of you with Tbolts and in an official LTE area, how well does the network work when you are moving? How well does the network handle handoffs? Is LTE useable when in a moving car?
Thanks for any input. I am seeking as much input as possible to make a consumer decision. This is not a trolling attempt and I hope no trolls attempt. I just need info.
All of that works amazing for me here in Phoenix. Almost all of the valley is covered in 4g and I get it pretty much anywhere. Works great while moving, handoffs seem to work fine.
In Columbus, OH and it is a LTE market - these days it seems they have worked out most of the kinks. Battery life is horrendous using the 4G radio - if you get the phone and have access to a WiFi AP for most of the day, use that over 4G. I mainly stay in Columbus and the 4G coverage area is rather large, I've not had problems with moving quickly and downloading anything, although I'd wonder what would happen if you wanted to use it as a carpool mobile hotspot, how stable it is in that situation I'm not sure. All and all I'm happy with the phone - and it seems Verizon is over their growing pains in the network.
4G works well when moving. I am able to make Skype Video calls while driving, and the video is clear, but not too smooth (Skype Mobile might be limiting the frame rate to 15fps). There are some data handoff issues when moving from a 4G area to a 3G area, resulting in music streams getting cut off. Most apps, when their data stream is cut off, do not intelligently reconnect, and make you have to restart the stream manually.
Initializing 4G is also not speedy. Driving out of a no-signal zone means waiting a good minute or two, as the phone goes from "no service" to "1x" to "4g". I've noticed that if you get impatient (or are just not paying attention) and invoke a data stream on "1x", the phone will not switch to "4g" until the data stream ends. This delay depends on the phone's hardware, obviously.
Also, your bandwidth varies sharply with location. The difference between New York City (2-4Mbps), Dallas (12-15Mbps), and San Francisco (3-6Mbps) is startling.
Hope this helps you.

Handoffs are the greatest, but overall a very pleasurable experience. I get about 8-12 down and a pretty consistent 2 up in charlotte. If you are in a good lte area, moving is not that bad. I use it to stream tv from my vulkano while moving and never really have a problem. Overall I'm happy. The only thing that I have a real issue with is GPS. I've seemed to notice that my 3G signal has been dropping to 1G often on my drive home (from Queens NY to Suffolk County)... maybe Sprints doing some work?

Its a trend. 1-2 years ago I got 1.5-2 Mbps on average since then its been getting progressively worse on any phone I try.

I was having similar issues in Fairfield County. The Guy at the Sprint store told me they were doing a ton of tower work in the area and it has been causing issues. He said it was suppose to be done by the end of April. We will see.

I have been experiencing this with whatever phone I've had (Palm Pre, Epic, Nexus) here. It was just FLAKY with the Pre, but the Epic and Nexus recently my 3G has been the pits. It will show I have full bars and my phone will crawl. Called Sprint and they said there is a "outage" in my area and that they were working on it.
My company gives discounts for people on AT&T, and if this keeps up it might be time for a change...........I hate the idea of having tiered data but what's the point of having unlimited usage that I CAN'T USE?

If you switch, take a look at TMo. They are great here and their pricing/data plans are good.
ATT speeds are good here too, I have them but am grand fathered into unlimited data. Don't know if I'd recommend them to a new customer.

Yeah I'm in NY as well and have been facing atrocious signal issues. Manhattan works fine including some parts of Queens, but once I head out into Long Island, forget about it, I see my bars drop to one, to none, and sometimes 1x.
Sprint is pushing out the update, just confirmed the release date to be the 25th. Hopefully, this will solve the signal issue that so many of us wishes to be finally resolved.

North NJ here and my signal is horrible..... sprint 3g is the worst...i had Verizon b4 i came over to sprint 2 months ago and boy do i regret it...
Same here in Stockton, CA. Been getting weak signal and when I use data it actually looks like my signal drops a bit.
I average speeds of .5 megs. Which is just terrible compared to other carriers.
BTW dont use the speedtest app from the market. Its borked, use a test through the web browser.

thanks....but the problem is T-Mobile is going to get gobbled up by AT&T soon so I'd lose that battle either way......
i also hate AT&T because they are against net neutrality (last time I checked), but that's a whole different subject
Not for me Been getting around 2mbps like forever besides outages from towers Going down

I agree... I live in Clifton, NJ and work in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. At work, I no longer get reception at all unless I'm roaming, when last year I had full signal.
At home, I had to get an Airave because I never have more than half my bars, this also used to be full.
i'm not getting reception at all right now and i normally have full bars inside my house.
On top of that when i do get reception, the white bars never turn green so i can't even call my voicemail WTF
Same for me in san. Diego CA. I hope they get this fixed soon. If not they better refund us the amount of money we paid for they're "premium data plan" that we can't even use.

To add to it,
In CT I'm in an area with "Good/Fair" coverage, or whatever. I hardly get enough of a data connection at home to load the facebook app.
The past few days, however, I've seen my phone on 1X a lot, and even no service at all for extended periods. But I'm wondering if it's from Sprint or from the latest nightly I just flashed. >_>
