What's better captivate xperia arc or xperia play - Captivate General

Hi
I have a captivate now.and I can upgrade to a play or arc at a very good price
Should I do it? And which one?
Thanks!
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

I think the xperia play is a great concept, poorly executed. Eventually if they start to get games, having dedicated buttons for playing games would be awesome.
I am almost ready for upgrade, I'm holding out for SGS II. That's the next android powerhouse.
At this point if you get anything that isn't dual-core you are getting last Gen tech.

not much difference. depends on your priorities. samsung has more media capabilities out of the box. als has a great headphone amp coupled with voodoo sound the captivate is a great portable music player.
the arc has hdmi and is about the thinnest phone i have seen advertised anywhere. it's only about 8.5 mm. also it has a bigger screen and is super lcd so it is a pretty good picture. amoled might have more brilliant colors but really a matter of preference. also has a camera flash.
as far as power and benchmarks they are very close powervr sgx540 gpu in the captivate beats the adreno 205 gpu by a enough to note but not enough to base a decision off of. the quallcom chip in the arc has a better fpu and gets great linpack scores. i think the cappy beats the arc overall if it gets loaded with gingerbread but we are not talking huge margins here.
really unless there is a need for a feature on the play or the arc id wait for a better phone that catches your eye. you may prefer the fact that the arc has gingerbread and th ecappy need it to be ported. you may want hdmi conectivity. really i cant tell you one is definatively better than the other. you will have to decide for your self.

I would get the Arc if you can. The play thing doesn't look too special to me. Unless you plan to play a lot of games on your phone.

I've really not heard many good things about the Play. I would consider it a bit of a downgrade from the Captivate.
I've heard some better things about the Arc, but I would wait until the SGSII to come to your location. Looks amazing!

I ended up getting the Arc and traded it to my GF for her iPhone 4 and sell it. Keeping the Captivate for a while. I may still end up getting the SGS2, but right now because the arc is so heavily discounted for me to renew my contract, it makes sense for me to do that. At least I know there's still a lot of hype for the iPhone 4 and can sell it very easily.

Nexus s vs captivate

I've wondered the same thing. I bought my cappy off contract and now have an upgrade choice. Dont think its worth using my upgrade. Gonna wait for something better later (sgs2? )

Ya I got mine week ago so I have option to return it since there is so many problems and battery life I don't like.

I'd say get it. It has native gingerbread and a front facing camera. And Google support so you know it will get updates on time!
All the great roms on this forum have made my phone enjoyable. If you aren't into flashing custom roms and all that, you probably should take it back. But dont get the nexus s. I'd say wait and se what the xperia arc reviews are like. That should be launching next month. Looks like a nice phone, except the locked bootloader.

If you have an upgrade, wait for something that is significantly better than the captivate. The Nexus S is almost the same phone with some minor differences... We'll have GB eventually anyway.

Nexus S seems to have a locked bootloader(as mentioned), but another strike against it for me is no card slot: you are essentially stuck with 16GB, which should be enough for most people but it's nice to have to option to expand. Add to that an inability to shoot HD video and a less-flexible camera software and the Captivate still has the edge. You'd be better off holding out for some of the juicier dual-core whizbangs coming out this summer.

you and many other people need to be corrected (your sig included)
CM7 is NOT stock 2.3.3
it is built off the stock but MODIFIED. it is not stock gingerbread. its is CM's mod of gingerbread.
and on top of that it is still beta.
short answer is captivate is for users and nexus is for developers. the proprietary drivers on galaxy s phones are quite nice with hd video recording and some other things, also like the lockscreens and notification bars that incorperate the music player. but the advantages of samsung software come at a cost. the bluetooth 3.0 driver limits the usefulness, ie very few game controllers work. gingerbread also has obvious performance advantages on the hummingbird chip. but i believe the graphics benchmark in quadrant crashes because the 3d drivers are not designed to work with something in quadrant.
neither is a bad phone for most people, they are both the better looking of the galaxy s series with no iphone like bezels and each has a uniquness. things like hd video are over rated because the sensor isn't quite good enough so 720p recording comes out a little darker, better for a bright day really. and the graphical advantages of the captivate are not important to most because the powervr540 chp is so far ahead of the curve in the first place. run graphical benchmarks on a captivate vs any other phone and you will see better frame rates and the picture quality is far better, but there are many reasons to look at other phones.
the advantages of the nexus are also not make or break, from a user standpoint you would have a hard time coming up with an advantage to gingerbread. it is faster but is the captivate slow? well it can hang briefly in some situations but i was using a live display at bestbuy, it was butter smooth and was still on jf7, no froyo. i think the lag is a myth and total placebo effect perpetuated by reading this forum, the power of suggestion goes a long way. jf6 may have been a buggy rom but the later models are not that bad.
the wp7 htc surround was showing the connect to pc sign, lol even there phones have a bsod equivelant, and the nexus s was locked up, needed a battery pull but that would set off the alarm so they left it that way.
if it comes down to making the decision decide based on feature set and ui. if you like twiz smart dialer feature and sweeping contact menus and music player or if you have a big library of high quality music recodings (cd quality or better) and need all the storage posible then get a cappy, if you like to video chat or prefer an aosp rom or gaming via external controller then go for the nexus.
if i was to make a perfect phone it would be the nexus plus an hdmi port sd expansion slot and twiz dialer contacts and music player and samsung video drivers, i think the nexus looks better but i still envy phones with hdmi and the next generation of samsung phones are supposed to have a wireless equivalent to hdmi, not dlna that only plays files but a wireless link that transfers whats on your screen, this disappoints me because then you need a tv with the technology or a reciever. samsung tries too much to bring new things to the market without supporting old ways of doing things, a phone that can transmit hd but doesnt have hdmi is useless to most people, adding a new technology is great but taking out the world standard just reduces the usefulness. this is what happened with bt 3.0. ok wow it has a new bluetooth version great, but the bluetooth stack doesnt work with popular products on the market, although it is backwards compatable with bt 2.1 it lacks a meathod to pair certain products. not cool samsung! te same will happen to the galaxy s 2 and i would like to see if the infuse has hdmi. if it does i may get the infuse despite the galaxy s 2 being technically better. if no hdmi i will hold on to the cappy till something else comes out that i get excited over, maybe an htc if samsung doesnt get support for drm built into the chipset that is compatable with netflix.
I would wait for something better than the captivate.
The nexus S really isn't much better overall then the captivate, and has some major downsides.
If you just got the captivate and the question is whether to return it, then it depends what you need. For me the deal breaker is no SD card slot, and since I store all my music on my phone, I need the extra storage. The Nexus S on the other hand, has better long-term support, if you consider that google still updates the Nexus 1.
The Captivate has enough problems that I would not buy one again, especially given that it is almost a year old and there are much better, newer phones. That said, I am not in a hurry to upgrade because I already went through the pain of having the TIB replaced and the remaining problems (no front-facing camera, no led indicator, mediocre battery life) are not bad enough to justify blowing a bunch of money before the end of my contract.

I think thats really what it comes down to. Sure the cappy has problems, but most are fixed, all that is left are any hardware you want which it lacks (like a front-facing camera). Under these conditions, the phones on the market right now just aren't appealing enough. We're just starting to see tegra and dual core devices, so certainly waiting a year or more for these devices to become the standard is a good idea. Right now the cappy is a high-end phone, and the dual cores currently aren't much better. Waiting until there is a real difference is key.
I've got a year and a half before I can upgrade, but I know by the time that rolls around, there will be some very good devices on the market. And honestly, captivate development isn't slowing. we're getting 2.3, and it's smooth as butter on our device.

If so, how do you like it compared to the Nexus S? Happy about the switch or having second thoughts?
On paper it sounds superior with the exception of the screen.

I switched from a nexus s, and I love it. I think the screen is a lot more vivid and colorful then the nexus s. I'm still going to keep the nexus because it will always get the newer os's first, but I haven't touched it since getting the g2x. I would say after using it for a few days, battery life is pretty much comparable,it's about the same. Once we get cm7 on here I'm sure it will just be a that much better
G2X
I wouldn't switch due to waiting for updates...just look at the g2 and don't tell me about LG is different and blah blah..T-Mobile still has to test and choose when to send it out. So I would stick with the Nexus S..unless you have no problem waiting a extra 6 months when ice creams comes out ..
I'm thinking once cyanogen mod works on it I won't even need to worry about updates. It will probably have more active community development I guess. Hardware wise it sounds like a superior device. The Galaxy S II is taking a while to hit the market and the sensation may have a locked bootloader I heard... I like the idea of HDMI mirroring.. Nexus S can't do that.

Well what ever floats your boat then ..
I though about it but i dont like the screen dont care what anyone says it doesn't compare to an OLED panel
BTW my friend has a g2x so ive compared side by side
only 512 ram
no mkv playback this sucks when you have HDMI mirror.
would be perfect to have some nice 1080mkv blu ray movies on phone to mirror to my HD TV
Game are OK but still being stretched out to fit so they get pixelated...
Also only 8gb for main storage
Im waiting for SGS2 international and hopefully i get enough cash
bigger screen samoled PLUS
1.2 ghz dual core Orion
1gb ram
16-32gb storage plus ext SD slot
plays every video and most audio codec under the sun with hardware encoding
HDMI out
I just sold my nexus s on ebay. And I have no regrets. This phone is so much faster and of course I love having a sd card slot. I prefer this form factor over the nexus s. This screen is has better color, more vivid and improved clarity. But the nexus s's blacks are to die for. I also have the thunderbolt and I previously owned the g2, the mytouch 4g, and the samsung vibrant. This is the best phone currently on the market. Hdmi, full 1080p video recording, and dual core processor. The design is simple and elegant. Great phone.
Don't let the 512mb of ram fool you. This baby flies it runs circles around the thunderbolt, which has 768mb ram. Right now, no other phone can rival it's performance. And it's so easy to root, so there should be ample dev support. Yes there may better devices down the line, but that's the nature of technology.
I switched from a nexus s because this device is packed with features I would use that the ns didn't have. To be honest, to me, going from a ns to g2x its more of an upgrade than when I went from a g1 to a vibrant.

I switched from the NS and have not had any second thoughts. Great device, very happy with it.
I switched from a Nexus S. The screen, IMO, is damn near as good as the Nexus S...but not quite as nice. Very close though.
Other than that, it's a huge upgrade. The thing freakin' screams compared to the NS, even an overclocked NS. With CM on it, I'd think there would be no comparison.
My Nexus S is going on Ebay, I'm more than thrilled with the G2X. The screen is sharper, phone is fast (can clearly tell watching beautiful widgets weather animations), and I like the feel and weight of the phone. When CM7 is out, it will be even better.
So I went to the store and played with it. I am going to wait and see what the HTC Sensation looks like on June 8th. Hopefully they will announce launch dates for the Galaxy S II by then also.
The phone was built well.. the screen was pretty nice looking but not as responsive as the Nexus S.
The connection was full bars 4G and it got 1500ish kbps down on my first test and then 3700ish kbps down on a second test. Right next to it my non hspa+ Nexus S pulled down just shy of 5000kbps.
Calls at full volume crackled..
I hope cyanogen and/or LG quickly release Gingerbread offerings for it.

Info..Nexus S or SGII

Hello all, I am heavily think about paying my ETF from AT&T and moving to Sprint. I can get 4 smart phones for the same price plan as I have at AT&T with just 2 smart phones and 2 regular phones.
On that note, I am looking at either the Nexus S or the SGII.. What are you opinions? I am leaning more towards Nexus S since it is a TRUE Google phone, no bloatware from Samsung or Touchwiz. But the downfall I feel is no SD card.
Please let a future Sprint customer know your opinion.
Thanks
It really depends on what you want to use your phone for.
An external SD card could be useful if you want a lot of media, and the dual core CPU and 1GB of RAM on the S2 will certainly help with gaming and flash heavy websites. However, as you state, the Touchwiz UI is certainly a bit crappy, and having used my friend's Samsung handsets I much prefer my Nexus S.
While the Nexus S doesn't have an SD card, it certainly has a good sized amount of storage (iPhone users all seem to manage fine with 16GB) and it is much zippier without bloat ware or extras. You're also going to get better support in terms of updates, and if you're a dev or a modder you're going to have a much easier experience with the Nexus S.
At the end of the day, I'd say go for the Nexus S if you want to mod, learn how Android works or stay at the cutting edge of Android. The 1GHz Hummingbird may not be dual core but it's still a damn fast chip and will get quick updates for a long time to come yet.
If you'd rather play lots of games, take HD video and use the phone for media then go for the S2.
Hope this helps
^^^
What he said best bet is go into a sprint store and play with both handsets and see what u like more. J wanted a gs2 but I heard that phone was having signal issues. I don't know if they got resolved but I couldn't be more happier with my nexus s 4g. I just wish sprint hurry up and fix there network.

So has the Nexus S received its official ICS update? I dont really use my phone much anymore to watch stuff off the internet since I got my Transformer. I play my games and watch movies off it. But I do surf the net, and would be using the Sprint TV option, you know the average user stuff.
I do root all my devices, I love custom roms and the ability to get free wifi tether, etc...
Damn, I wrote a whole page and it didn't post! I have both phones so I will give a quick summary...development and timely updates- Nexus. If battery and over the top performance are most important then ET4G. The LOS (loss of signal) issue was cleared up with an OTA update

Go on samsung S II and you will not regret ! ( Nexus S is limitted now 512RAM, No micro SDcard, only one 1GHz proc....) I have both devices but you can't compare SII with NS ( SII is faster than many tablets, has a magnificent display, and many other benefits ) ! Good luck in your choice !
Get the gs2.
I own a ns4g and my wife has the epic touch gs2. No matter what you read, or hear touch wiz getting slammed...the gs2 smokes my ns4g in every respect. Its a large phone but other than that it blisters my ns4g and has better battery life. Both phones are stock.
What they all said .. SGSII. Once rooted, bloatwares/junkwares are no longer a problem as you would flash custom ROM anyway (I know I would). The SGSII's hardwares just blow the NS out of the water.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
How does the Nexus S manage in gaming? I don't play the latest games, but maybye some Angry Birds, Guns n' Glory or Toki Tori. Mostly i'm texting and using android apps. Can I buy the Nexus S, or should I buy the SGS2?
That's like buying a mustang gt or springing for the cobra. If u can afford it, the bigger IS better
I have an NS4G but would love to have an S2. I like the larger screen (my previous phone was an Evo, and it fit my hand perfectly) and more robust hardware.
Throw an aosp rom into the S2 and you have the best of both worlds.
My only gripe with Samsung is how they didn't include the Wolfson WM8994 and cheaped out by using a Yamaha DAC, otherwise I'd probably be all over one of the variants. If you're someone who wants to use their phone as their primary portable audio player, and care about sound quality a lot, there's a huge selling point for the Nexus S, as well as the original Galaxy S phones.
Otherwise, the SGS2 is better in pretty much every respect. Not a fan of TouchWiz though, but there would likely be a TouchWiz free ROM shortly after ICS is released for it.
If you do not have enough money to afford an SII, then go on Nexus S , still good and you can play games without problems

ARC S vs ATRIX 4G !

Hey there,
I want to buy a new device, I have both ARC S and ATRIX 4G in mind, and I kinda lean toward the ARC S because of it's better camera and design. I know the ATRIX is stronger and have more RAM to it, but I just think it's ugly
So I just wanna know if the ARC S is having trouble in every day use, does it lag because of it's average CPU and RAM, how does it GPU stands in comparison to the ATRIX 4G in games and so on.
My main uses of the device will be camera, which is nice, games ( - which I really don't know how it handles the heavy ones) and movies - and from what I red, it can play 720p kinda smooth.
Thank you!
(I'm asking because I found no answer which is good enough in Google, so I wanna hear the opinion of you guys)
Go with the atrix if you'll be gaming. The extra RAM helps alot.

Actually, the Arc S has better performance in Nenamark. Check on YouTube.
Really? Interesting. Ah well, then you should get the prettier phone with higher benchmarks.

Gamer phone

Which phone Would be The best choice for that
ps:it should be cost around 250€ maybe a little bit more
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
Have you checked out the xperia play? Also, any current dual core phone should be sufficient to play mc3
Buy Samsung Galaxy S2. It will be the best choice for gaming as mostly all games support it. Modern Combat 3 runs like a beast on it.
Dont buy Xperia Play...! It only has 512MB Ram, 1.2Ghz single core cpu and an old Gpu which is not good to run latest games like Nova 3, etc...
And btw game developers have stopped optimising games for XperiaPlay.
So S2 is the best choice for your budget.
And 1 top reason for buying Galaxy S2 : Galaxy S3 has the same Mali-400 GPU which means all games in the future which will support S3 will also support S2...!!!

Yes..galaxy S Advance is also a good choice but its price is only around 50$ less than S2. S2 comes with a 8mp cam while as S Advance has 5.0mp...and S2 scores more in benchmark results...GPU only plays a small role in running games..CPU and RAM does the trick..So i think u should wait a little bit and save some enough money to buy S2. Now i have a galaxy ace which has an armv6 proc. and its no more supported not in games or any other app. Now the main problem is i can live very well with my galaxy ace if i have to wait for a new generation of proc. Aka cortex-a15 or something like that.

I bought my S2 from Germany too, and it's not G. You just have to look for one.
Maybe you should look for one used?
Sensation is a little bit cheaper, but its GPU is nothing compared to S2's.

Then maybe you should buy Sony Xperia Arc S. Price is too less for its features which the phone has.
It costs 200$ less than Galaxy S2. So it will be a good choice. It scores nearly the same in benchmark results like S2. Morever Many games are also supported.

Ok am not gonna pimp you my current phone or pimp you the fantasy phone i would like to buy if i could myself.
What am gonna suggest is the criteria for your choice of phone, and one other utterly vital issue if your main concern is gaming.
1:
Get a phone that is know to work with sixaxis
If your unaware what it is it is a completely awesome app that allows dualshock PS3 sticks to be used as controllers for Android devices via bluetooth, its well developed and ultra stable, best updated regularly (but not recently).Has many features that make it THE BEST choice for a decent controller for Android gaming.
These include full button config, touch control emulation, apparently Earl the dev is working on accelerometer emulation too. Nothing else on the market or that is proposed yet covers the options list of sixaxis.
It completely TRANSFORMS the experience of playing games like MC3, or ShadowGun, N.O.V.A., etc. But it is just as awesome for racing games, arcade games, emulators, etc, any gaming (that's until its implemented) that's not accelerometer dependent.
Oh yeah it easily works out as the cheapest Android controller solution too
2:
Gaming will HAMMER your battery, it will beat it down like a red headed step child, then beat it to a pulp as it lays on the ground, then round it off by violating any moist orifices your battery may have. Gaming will keep doing this to your battery without any shred of empathy, guilt, or remorse.
So make sure that the phone you get either has a good battery life or one with plenty of high capacity 3rd party batteries to choose from.
The ideal would be a phone with both characteristics. Buy a few spare batteries 3+ unless you don't mind being caught short of battery when out and about.
Also remember the faster the CPU and the more cores the faster your battery will get flensed down to low power warning. Not encouraging you to get a low end CPU just reminding you.
Everyone gets all school girl excited about quads, but the current generation of duals are more than enough to run current games with ease.
I own an old HTC Desire Z 800mhz stock CPU i usually OC it to 1.1 -1.3GHz when gaming but many games don't even need this boost.
As i stated am not suggesting a low end CPU but guys get over focused on the fastest they can get ........ often its an exercise in Geek willy waving ...... and is often just as purposeful
3:
Screen size, obviously you do not want a 3" screen to play games, my approach is biggest you can get when taking all other features into account.
4:
Roms choice many custom Roms usually the more stripped and optimised ones like CM, AOKP, or Miui often give better gaming performance than a whole slew of other Roms.
5:
Maybe with your budget you should consider going 2nd hand. If done carefully its nowhere near as fraught with risk and danger as many seem
to think. Its probably THE best way to guarantee HUGE bang for the bucks spent.
Hope this helps bruv

First thanks for your detailed post.
Second i dont want a 2nd hand phone (bad experiences) and maybe im going to sell my ace so i can maybe buy a s2:victory:
the ace costs now around 160Euro (new), what do you think i will get for it if im going to sell it. It has no scratches only some micro at the chrome case and the chrome is at the bottom a little bit decomposed. but thats not a big thing. AND i have rest warranty.
Bad news for me.
I searched for the original s2 here in germany but the only thing i found was that there is no s2s whitout the g anymore:screwy:
I also checked for the adreno 320 aka s4 pro. Its very fast i surely very good for gaming but the first devices will be released to the end of this year

Should be good, but are you bothered with the screen size?
Anything with dual core and decent graphic are still up to par with today's modern games such as nova 3, but if you really into gaming i suggest you to get a phone with bigger screen size because it's what matters they most.. e.g galaxy nexus?
