Gamer phone - General Topics

I want a gamer phone that means i want To play games like mc3.
Which phone Would be The best choice for that
ps:it should be cost around 250€ maybe a little bit more
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium

Have you checked out the xperia play? Also, any current dual core phone should be sufficient to play mc3

Buy Samsung Galaxy S2. It will be the best choice for gaming as mostly all games support it. Modern Combat 3 runs like a beast on it.
Dont buy Xperia Play...! It only has 512MB Ram, 1.2Ghz single core cpu and an old Gpu which is not good to run latest games like Nova 3, etc...
And btw game developers have stopped optimising games for XperiaPlay.
So S2 is the best choice for your budget.
And 1 top reason for buying Galaxy S2 : Galaxy S3 has the same Mali-400 GPU which means all games in the future which will support S3 will also support S2...!!!

Yes..galaxy S Advance is also a good choice but its price is only around 50$ less than S2. S2 comes with a 8mp cam while as S Advance has 5.0mp...and S2 scores more in benchmark results...GPU only plays a small role in running games..CPU and RAM does the trick..So i think u should wait a little bit and save some enough money to buy S2. You will never reget the wait once you get it.

As i said i cant go with the original s2 because its not available here.
Now i have a galaxy ace which has an armv6 proc. and its no more supported not in games or any other app. Now the main problem is i can live very well with my galaxy ace if i have to wait for a new generation of proc. Aka cortex-a15 or something like that.

I bought my S2 from Germany too, and it's not G. You just have to look for one.
Maybe you should look for one used?
Sensation is a little bit cheaper, but its GPU is nothing compared to S2's.
Sent from my wallet

Then maybe you should buy Sony Xperia Arc S. Price is too less for its features which the phone has.
It costs 200$ less than Galaxy S2. So it will be a good choice. It scores nearly the same in benchmark results like S2. Morever Many games are also supported.

Ok am not gonna pimp you my current phone or pimp you the fantasy phone i would like to buy if i could myself.
What am gonna suggest is the criteria for your choice of phone, and one other utterly vital issue if your main concern is gaming.
1:
Get a phone that is know to work with sixaxis
If your unaware what it is it is a completely awesome app that allows dualshock PS3 sticks to be used as controllers for Android devices via bluetooth, its well developed and ultra stable, best updated regularly (but not recently).Has many features that make it THE BEST choice for a decent controller for Android gaming.
These include full button config, touch control emulation, apparently Earl the dev is working on accelerometer emulation too. Nothing else on the market or that is proposed yet covers the options list of sixaxis.
It completely TRANSFORMS the experience of playing games like MC3, or ShadowGun, N.O.V.A., etc. But it is just as awesome for racing games, arcade games, emulators, etc, any gaming (that's until its implemented) that's not accelerometer dependent.
Oh yeah it easily works out as the cheapest Android controller solution too
2:
Gaming will HAMMER your battery, it will beat it down like a red headed step child, then beat it to a pulp as it lays on the ground, then round it off by violating any moist orifices your battery may have. Gaming will keep doing this to your battery without any shred of empathy, guilt, or remorse.
So make sure that the phone you get either has a good battery life or one with plenty of high capacity 3rd party batteries to choose from.
The ideal would be a phone with both characteristics. Buy a few spare batteries 3+ unless you don't mind being caught short of battery when out and about.
Also remember the faster the CPU and the more cores the faster your battery will get flensed down to low power warning. Not encouraging you to get a low end CPU just reminding you.
Everyone gets all school girl excited about quads, but the current generation of duals are more than enough to run current games with ease.
I own an old HTC Desire Z 800mhz stock CPU i usually OC it to 1.1 -1.3GHz when gaming but many games don't even need this boost.
As i stated am not suggesting a low end CPU but guys get over focused on the fastest they can get ........ often its an exercise in Geek willy waving ...... and is often just as purposeful
3:
Screen size, obviously you do not want a 3" screen to play games, my approach is biggest you can get when taking all other features into account.
4:
Roms choice many custom Roms usually the more stripped and optimised ones like CM, AOKP, or Miui often give better gaming performance than a whole slew of other Roms.
5:
Maybe with your budget you should consider going 2nd hand. If done carefully its nowhere near as fraught with risk and danger as many seem
to think. Its probably THE best way to guarantee HUGE bang for the bucks spent.
Hope this helps bruv

First thanks for your detailed post.
Second i dont want a 2nd hand phone (bad experiences) and maybe im going to sell my ace so i can maybe buy a s2:victory:
the ace costs now around 160Euro (new), what do you think i will get for it if im going to sell it. It has no scratches only some micro at the chrome case and the chrome is at the bottom a little bit decomposed. but thats not a big thing. AND i have rest warranty.

Bad news for me.
I searched for the original s2 here in germany but the only thing i found was that there is no s2s whitout the g anymore:screwy:
I also checked for the adreno 320 aka s4 pro. Its very fast i surely very good for gaming but the first devices will be released to the end of this year

Should be good, but are you bothered with the screen size?
Anything with dual core and decent graphic are still up to par with today's modern games such as nova 3, but if you really into gaming i suggest you to get a phone with bigger screen size because it's what matters they most.. e.g galaxy nexus?

The whole purpose for G2X is gaming

Bash the G2x all you want bUT the first and foremost purpose for this superphone is it was meant to be that portable all in one gaming gadget.
Playstation tried to do it, and many companies throughout the years have been trying to bring such a device to cater to gamers.
And as of right now G2x is second to none as far as pushing polygons around with it's Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset.
This is the whole purpose for G2x, Nvidia is huge in the PC gaming market, and when they release their Quad Core Tegra chipset I'll be there.
G2x most awesome gaming cellphone. PERIOD...

That's exactly what I use my G2X for and it does it well. However, if someone besides HTC makes a phone with the Adreno 220 with the proper drivers, it will be able to push more polygons than the Tegra 2. Notice how I said someone besides HTC? They cant optimize or code drivers for ****. I would actually like to see Samsung take a crack at it because there really isn't anything right now with the graphics power the Adreno 220 has. In the end however, its all in how its packaged. I cant wait to see what Tegra 3 brings to the game.

Sure, it's great at pushing polys, but without a d-pad and other real buttons, it automatically sucks as a gaming device. Buy a PSP/3DS/DS if you're looking to do any real mobile gaming, not a G2x.
Sony was definitely on the right track though. What they should do is take the specs of the Vita, put them in a slimmer Xperia Play form factor, add Android, a PlayStation Market app, and a slot to take Vita game cards and you'd have a true all in one mobile device. Kinda like n-gage...

But the HDMI support coupled with the Tegra 2 in this device is wicked. Haven't played one game on it yet, since I'm not usually into app games. But I may have to test it out to see how the gaming is from phone > TV.
I download a lot of free trials (search for ... lite games ... for tons). I always read the comments before downloading. You see lots of various old devices as not having the horsepower to run them, to be expected. Some of the newer games really require at least 800 + mhz.
You also see a lot of problems with Sensations and Samsung GS II devices. Both of these are being fixed quickly from developers, very quickly by some of the better paid apps. I don't see a lot of issues for G2x's.
Reading the comments and looking at the updates being pushed should confirm this to anyone.
I think its mostly because Nvidia obeyed all the specifications of the standard design better, and did more testing to makes sure games work better. Afterall games are what feed the employees of Nvidia. Tegra simple a better CPU for the job.

Its an observation Jr. its not the end all be all, and because of the shear volume of the SGII, the bugs will be resolved on active apps, on old apps, not so much

I agree with every single point in this post. I don't like phone gaming outside of emulators, and even then, I use a BT controller (PS3 or Wii controller) to play games, because it lacks buttons. My PSP and 3DS get much more game time then my phone.

It was just a question to your observation. I only felt like reading through one of the games you mentioned which was Asphalt 5. I see multiple devices with problems including Tegra powered devices. Its not a game play issue with the Sensation. Its a downloading issue. Everyone says it wont download the additional data to play the game. I don't think the problem has anything to do with the CPU/GPU. That's just my observation.

Why you continue to troll on a phone that you have already sold is beyond me. Why you would not read what the developer said first is ridiculous if your weren't just trolling.
It reads:
What's in this version:
Fixed issues with HTC Sensation, HTC Evo 3D, Samsung Galaxy S II, MyTouch 4G Slide
If you have problem starting the game after update, try to restart your device
The Nvidia chips, as usual, run games easier, and faster. Not shocking, just another example.
As I said I download a lot of free samples, the Sensation, Evo 3D and GS II, Dual cores that are not Tegra comments are frequent. There are plenty of other patchs being release for the same chips.

btw, heres a pic/link how the Tegra3 quadcore will work
source:
http://pocketnow.com/smartphone-news/nvidia-kal-el-chips-have-fifth-low-power-companion-core
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/09/20/nvidia-releases-two-white-papers-about-project-kal-el-secret-5th-core-revealed/
tldr: Tegra3 quadcores wont have 4 cores-> they will have 5
the 5th is a "powersave" core who will run for the small things (standby etc)
Other benefits would be faster pageload times in browsers, quick multi-tasking, better performance while using processor-heavy apps, and most importantly, overall lower power consumption without a drop in performance.
The second paper details an-almost secret “5th core” called the companion core, that allows your device to use much less power while in standby or using background tasks such as music, Facebook updates, and email syncing. With this companion core, the main quad-core is essentially able to shut down completely, allowing your device to last much longer.

Poor HTC....Their phones need Quadcores just to run stock Sense smoothly, we'll be in for it when Sense 4 is released, it will need more than 1GB RAM. And no I'm not joking, HTC thinks adding cores fixes the lag in Sense, but they need to learn optimization, and bloated doesn't cut it.

That actually makes sense. Glad to see NVIDIA do some research with graphics vs battery life especially considering that their optimus GPU works wonders. I was thinking with four cores active at once, battery life will be complete crap. Still wouldn't do console level gaming on a smartphone because onscreen controls suck so much. A tablet, maybe.

Or the htc titan 2, 16mpx but only 720p recording
I quite like the Nexus, but the screen is a bit too big for a daily mobile. I've currently got a Desire HD and thats big enough for me.
I currenty carry around an iPod Touch, my Desire HD, and a work Blackberry 9780. So Iwant something to combine my phone and iPod.
I'd love to stay with Android so I'll be watching closely to see what they can come up with that has descent battery life in the next 6 months - that way I can play my music on it without worrying about having enough charge for the rest of the day.

GNexus... if it ever comes to Tmous. and not as a replacement to the Senny but just a second handset to play with. always wanted a developer phone...
if not, gonna wait it out to see how this whole quad core pans out.
I'm happy with my Senny right now so I'm in no rush.
on the tablet side, might pick up that new 7" Asus Tegra 3. at $249... cheap thrill.
(not that I really need a tablet)
Either HTC Rhyme or Galaxy W.
I hate big screens, and i'm looking for a descent screen that is not more than 3.5" and at the same time a good processor that is not less than 1GHz.
I'll be getting the gnex. This week.

Think my next one will be a Samsung Galaxy Tab. At least it has a tegra GPU and ARMv7 cpu unlike my LG Optimus One. Too bad it costs a bunch of money(at least for me is kinda unaffordable)

Got The same Phone!
Will do same till 3rd step.
GS2's camera(s) is/are enough for me but if the Xperia S Gets DSLR lens and Capability then I will think about it. LOL!
I would get a high end phone since it's an investment, most likely for 2-3 years
Most likely when the Galaxy Nexus drops for Sprint, I'm getting it. And while so, I'll be waiting for the Galaxy S III. Love my current GSII/E4GT, so I'm hoping the GSIII will probably bring the same performance expectancy.

I wouldn't really say shafted, the dual core is faster and more power efficient than the previous S3 CPU and you get 2GB of ram rather than 1GB making multitasking much smoother. I've been hearing the Exynos quad to be a monster at eating battery if not tweaked (disable 2 cores etc...) and there are barely any apps/games that support more than 1 thread for phones aside from benchmarks. Thats pretty much like getting a 6 or 8 core CPU for PC yet the games/programs you use only use 2-4 cores and the only real benefit is if you use 3d programing/rendering/casting/encoding etc... but if you go to phone usage, doubt many utilize the full dual core.
So while the S4 only has 2 cores its still fast, if you have a quad core version of it you get this:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/24/qualcomm-snapdragon-s4-pro-apq8064-benchmark/
And we know getting that type of benchmark wont really be battery friendly will it?
later man. enjoy the gs3.

Two generations better CPU, a slightly better GPU, a higher resolution from 480x800 to 720x1280, longer battery life, more efficient LTE with better signal, better build, zero lag shutter camera...yes, its a big leap

What exactly will a better CPU offer, at this moment. I mean that in the sense that I don't see where my experience would improve in any way. Perhaps SwiftKey won't have an occasional hick up but even that's no guarantee. Besides that there's nothing I can do on an S3 that won't operate with the same usability as it would on my S2.
Still, to each his own, for me the only improvement would be resolution which I would unfortunately ruin with the nice feel of a matte anti glare cover. What I want is an S3 with guaranteed software updates going forward. Meaning ill be waiting until the next Nexus.

If we take from a hardware standpoint here are the key differences:
CPU:
Snapdragon S3 MSM8260 45nm 1.5GHz (Dual Core)-> Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 28nm 1.5GHz (Dual Core)
(Here we see the die shrink, with die shrinks on new architecture you can see battery improvements, temperature improvements and clock per clock speeds its faster)
GPU:
Adreno 220 -> Adreno 225
RAM:
1GB Single Channel -> 2GB Dual Channel
Display:
480x800 -> 720x1280
Gorilla Glass 1 -> Gorilla Glass 2
Of course there is a lot of other features/hardware that are "better" such as camera and stock battery etc...
In terms of the phone itself, the SR is not lacking since its still a dual core phones while other phones are still single and working their way to dual core. Quad core are starting to arise but they wont be as efficient for a while since the games/apps we use will not take advantage of all the cores. That being said by the time we do utilize them most likely there will be a newer and better hardware. Also 720p may start becoming the next standard in display as "HD" is making its way onto phones. If you think about hardware difference, think of Samsung Galaxy S2 as 1, Skyrocket as 1.5 and Galaxy S3 as 2. S3 (North America) is still dual core but it is an efficient/fast CPU.
Good example of this is like PC specs:
Q6600 = Quad (65nm)
Q9550 = Quad (45nm)
i5 760 = Quad (45nm)
i5 2500K = Quad (32nm)
i5 3570K = Quad (28nm)
What I mean about that is the standard has started to become quad in the CPU/laptop world but the big difference is the efficiency(power consumption), speed (clock per clock) and maybe other supported hardware features.
So is it a big step up?.... Yes and no, yes because hardwarewise it is better but the SR isnt lacking to the point where ICS/JB lags on it or any other apps/games atm. Of course if you have insane graphical games maybe it will slug the SR in terms of performance but thats entirely on what you use it for. Ask the same question next year and you'll probably hear the same, the S3 is not lacking but xxx (S4 or whatever is "faster"). Technology will always get better its just whether you want to pay to get the latest and greatest or not.
I buy my gear based on my use. You wont see me buying computers that are 6-8 cores, Quad SLI/CFX video cards or whatever because I don't need them lol. My hardware is fully capable of playing the current games so thats what I usually upgrade for, my uses.
If you compare the SR to the S3 of course you will see a good difference but if you only use the phone for facebook, instagram, twitter, calling, texting, whatever, the SR can do those. Now if it can't do those and its slow and always dying on you and programs aren't working and super super sluggish then yeah those are the reasons for the upgrade.
Now if we go to the development side yes, phones like Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S2 (original) and Galaxy S3 will have big support as most people get them when they first come out so if you want to look for it in that view they have more popularity. Some people want to get the phones that everyones getting while others don't want the "same exact" one but on a similar page.
Way to go and spoon feed insane amount of info lol... Good stuff

Galaxy sIII vs PS Vita (Gaming)

Hi all,
First of all I like to play games on handheld devices that's why I own a Vita which I kinda regret now. The gaming performance on the SIII is just amazing! See it with your eyes I've compared the same games on both devices (Asphalt, Pinball Arcade). Whatcha think?
Click on the links:
http://youtu.be/CXgW90IGYho Review
http://youtu.be/lK_S3sLXX2U Asphalt
http://youtu.be/QaXTwq5jf-Y Pinball Arcade
I have both as well. As much as I enjoy casual gaming on the SGS3, the hardcore gamed leave something to be desired.
As is typical with a heterogeneous hardware environment, games are often built to the lowest common denominator. Most other Android phones can't keep up with the SGS3's specs, so software companies either make incredible games that only a small percentage of users can run, or make okay games that work for most everybody. Then you also have games like N.O.V.A 3 which the SGS3 could chew up and spit out... But it's not optimized for the new hardware. It runs, but runs like crap.
The Vita's power is that it's a known variable, developers can make games that use as much horsepower as they can wring out of it and know that everyone with a Vita (both of us) can take advantage.
The Vita didn't have the strongest start, but the quality of the early games (I think Metacritic will back me up on this) is some of the best for any console. At the end of the day, I have and enjoy both. They overlap in ways that 85% of people won't need both, but I think there is enough value for the other 15% to justify both.

The Vita is having a very slow start. But I think when Ouya hits it will increase the number of high end android games potentially.
Ouya is a console from kickstarter fyi.

The Vita or 3DS are not comparable to any phones. I'd love to see Uncharted or Gravity Rush run on a phone. These devices are made for one thing, games. That's what the people are going to put millions of dollars into.
Well you're right! I'm going to upload some in-game screenshots...and yeah uncharted looks great but it's scaled down from the max resolution.... so I guess the sIII could run it too without a problem. To be clear it's a fact that we won't have AA Games on the mobile platform
The vita is actually a powerfull device, with such a bare UI and housing the SGX543MP4+ and I think 512mb ram? It should be able to render a lot of intensive games if the devs really wanted to.
The snapdragon s4/adreno 225 is based on a 28nm chipset which allows for higher bus speeds, more processing power, less power consumption and less cpu/gpu heat which in return makes it one of the most powerfull cpus in the mobile industry. That is mainly why the gs3/evo4glte/one s get incredible battery life at incredible speeds. Now if only they could use the mali 6xx + s4 quad core 28nm that would be one hell of a device

As much as I hate to say this. S III vs Vita would be Vita. iPhone vs Vita would be iPhone.
The problem with all three though is the battery. If only there was a battery that could go more than 2-3 hours of gaming.

My nexus 7 looks better and I'm guessing the one x would considering it has a nvidia terga chip too. But you have to download the thd version Of the game to use it to its full potential.

on the Vita the hardware is given + don't forget the physical buttons... gaming on the iPhone well they're optimized because there are no n+ devices to optimize for.
This may just be be, but:
BestC>PS3>PSV>SGS3>iphone 4S>Onlive:last
P.S This is a bit offtopic, but it piss's me off: EA first turned sim city "5" into a online only game and now they just turned C&C gen 2 into a PAY TO PLAY or FTP as the one's who play crap like farmvile. ( Sorry if you like that game or what ever, but This C&C thing REALLY, REALLY PISSED me off.
the vita is a game console first.
i own a vita and playing game with physical buttons will always be superior.
if you want to know vitas capabilities check out the game "tearaway" that was just announced. or little big planet, or killzone mercanery. etc.

the gs3 will never come close to vita. the only advantage the s3 has over the vita is that i can play a wider range of games with friends. friends have android, no friends have 250$ gaming dedicated handhelds.

Yeah, that's kinda all bull****. The SIII is more powerful than the iPhone and with a much bigger screen. I might have trouble deciding between an SIII and Vita, but I'd choose a Vita over an iPhone any day. It's hard playing on a touch screen, but even harder playing on a tiny touch screen. The single thing iPhone has over Android, is a small number of games, which will likely be ported to Android anyway. And that small number of good games is not large enough to sell the iPhone over the SIII.
For those who worry about lack of physical buttons on your smartphone, rooted users can use the sixaxis controller app to use a dual shock 3 to have a controller. Not sure if iphone has something like that, but it certainly helps those wanting physical buttons and gaming on their phone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wiek3pgBxqk&feature=youtube_gdata_player
For non rooted users can go with this, is awesome.
