I wouldn't really say shafted, the dual core is faster and more power efficient than the previous S3 CPU and you get 2GB of ram rather than 1GB making multitasking much smoother. I've been hearing the Exynos quad to be a monster at eating battery if not tweaked (disable 2 cores etc...) and there are barely any apps/games that support more than 1 thread for phones aside from benchmarks. Thats pretty much like getting a 6 or 8 core CPU for PC yet the games/programs you use only use 2-4 cores and the only real benefit is if you use 3d programing/rendering/casting/encoding etc... but if you go to phone usage, doubt many utilize the full dual core.
So while the S4 only has 2 cores its still fast, if you have a quad core version of it you get this:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/24/qualcomm-snapdragon-s4-pro-apq8064-benchmark/
And we know getting that type of benchmark wont really be battery friendly will it?

later man. enjoy the gs3.

Two generations better CPU, a slightly better GPU, a higher resolution from 480x800 to 720x1280, longer battery life, more efficient LTE with better signal, better build, zero lag shutter camera...yes, its a big leap

Not big enough for me to take
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda premium

What exactly will a better CPU offer, at this moment. I mean that in the sense that I don't see where my experience would improve in any way. Perhaps SwiftKey won't have an occasional hick up but even that's no guarantee. Besides that there's nothing I can do on an S3 that won't operate with the same usability as it would on my S2.
Still, to each his own, for me the only improvement would be resolution which I would unfortunately ruin with the nice feel of a matte anti glare cover. What I want is an S3 with guaranteed software updates going forward. Meaning ill be waiting until the next Nexus.

If we take from a hardware standpoint here are the key differences:
CPU:
Snapdragon S3 MSM8260 45nm 1.5GHz (Dual Core)-> Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 28nm 1.5GHz (Dual Core)
(Here we see the die shrink, with die shrinks on new architecture you can see battery improvements, temperature improvements and clock per clock speeds its faster)
GPU:
Adreno 220 -> Adreno 225
RAM:
1GB Single Channel -> 2GB Dual Channel
Display:
480x800 -> 720x1280
Gorilla Glass 1 -> Gorilla Glass 2
Of course there is a lot of other features/hardware that are "better" such as camera and stock battery etc...
In terms of the phone itself, the SR is not lacking since its still a dual core phones while other phones are still single and working their way to dual core. Quad core are starting to arise but they wont be as efficient for a while since the games/apps we use will not take advantage of all the cores. That being said by the time we do utilize them most likely there will be a newer and better hardware. Also 720p may start becoming the next standard in display as "HD" is making its way onto phones. If you think about hardware difference, think of Samsung Galaxy S2 as 1, Skyrocket as 1.5 and Galaxy S3 as 2. S3 (North America) is still dual core but it is an efficient/fast CPU.
Good example of this is like PC specs:
Q6600 = Quad (65nm)
Q9550 = Quad (45nm)
i5 760 = Quad (45nm)
i5 2500K = Quad (32nm)
i5 3570K = Quad (28nm)
What I mean about that is the standard has started to become quad in the CPU/laptop world but the big difference is the efficiency(power consumption), speed (clock per clock) and maybe other supported hardware features.
So is it a big step up?.... Yes and no, yes because hardwarewise it is better but the SR isnt lacking to the point where ICS/JB lags on it or any other apps/games atm. Of course if you have insane graphical games maybe it will slug the SR in terms of performance but thats entirely on what you use it for. Ask the same question next year and you'll probably hear the same, the S3 is not lacking but xxx (S4 or whatever is "faster"). Technology will always get better its just whether you want to pay to get the latest and greatest or not.
I buy my gear based on my use. You wont see me buying computers that are 6-8 cores, Quad SLI/CFX video cards or whatever because I don't need them lol. My hardware is fully capable of playing the current games so thats what I usually upgrade for, my uses.
If you compare the SR to the S3 of course you will see a good difference but if you only use the phone for facebook, instagram, twitter, calling, texting, whatever, the SR can do those. Now if it can't do those and its slow and always dying on you and programs aren't working and super super sluggish then yeah those are the reasons for the upgrade.
Now if we go to the development side yes, phones like Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S2 (original) and Galaxy S3 will have big support as most people get them when they first come out so if you want to look for it in that view they have more popularity. Some people want to get the phones that everyones getting while others don't want the "same exact" one but on a similar page.

Way to go and spoon feed insane amount of info lol... Good stuff

Galaxy models coming soon (Note, SII LTE, SII LTE HD) shopping poll.

i9000 is currently more than 1 year old, and some may currently be considering their next upgrade/purchase, which model you consider to be the next leading Galaxy phone?
I just bought my Galaxy S, its 1 month old, ill stick with it for another year or so and then upgrade to galaxy s II
Ill stick to my sgs a year more, maybe 1 and a half so maybe galaxy s 3 or 4 or maybe note 2 .
hit thankxx if i helped. sent from my mind through telepathy (ya its possible)!
im just gonna wait for s3 now. im on an 18month contract so sorta tied to sgs until next march anyway might as well hold out until s3 is out there then get on at the bleeding edge
I am curious to see what the the HD screen will look like. It will probably be pentile again, will the resolution be high enough to please my eye? Maybe.
Probably won't buy an S2 though, hoping for a beefier GPU in the S3.
Seeing as the SGS2 GPU is not really out-classing the SGS, I wonder how it will cope with the HD resolution. I'm thinking a higher tier of performance (like the huge future gains nvidia is bragging about, or even something like the SGX543MP2 in the ipad2) will be welcome with newer titles at HD resolution.
I'm torn between the Galaxy Note (1.4Ghz) and SII LTE HD (1.5Ghz).
Both with great screen HD resolution, huge sizes, new exynos processor with better battery life, upgraded GPU and other small changes.
SIII is rumoured to have similar specs, maybe a better screen, so don't know if it's actually worth waiting.

'Similar', I think a more heavier word like ' better ' would have fitted into the line, sgs3 is rumoured to have a 2.0 quad core(4 cores) processor and 1.5gb ram( rumoured by many big tech news sites like engadget.com,thisismynext.com,phonearena.com,gsmarena.com),also a 10mp camera is rumoured at back, and a 5mp ffcamera is rumoured ( just read that in 1 article so the news is not so strong and dependable).
And I don't think 'bigger screen size' means bigger phones, if you compare sgs2 international version and sgs2 hd (korean) version then the latter one has a way bigger screen but if you see the lower button pannel, you will notice the buttons have been made smaller and wider so that the device is still not that big and is still just a notch bigger than original sgs2's 'body size'. ;-)

Hm I remember it not being very impressive in the early benchmarks, barely beating the SGS and losing to tegra2. They did say it could be early drivers though. I'd love to see recent comparisons but nobody seems to be doing them.

Look on Anandtech. The Mali 400 is almost as good as the SGX540, the Tegra2 and the Adreno 220.... combined!
LTE will likely be the catalyst to get a new phone. Aside from the fact that the technology is quicker, there will be less people using it.
And you can't go past a phone with 720p!
Retina display.. psft...

btw, heres a pic/link how the Tegra3 quadcore will work
source:
http://pocketnow.com/smartphone-news/nvidia-kal-el-chips-have-fifth-low-power-companion-core
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/09/20/nvidia-releases-two-white-papers-about-project-kal-el-secret-5th-core-revealed/
tldr: Tegra3 quadcores wont have 4 cores-> they will have 5
the 5th is a "powersave" core who will run for the small things (standby etc)
Other benefits would be faster pageload times in browsers, quick multi-tasking, better performance while using processor-heavy apps, and most importantly, overall lower power consumption without a drop in performance.
The second paper details an-almost secret “5th core” called the companion core, that allows your device to use much less power while in standby or using background tasks such as music, Facebook updates, and email syncing. With this companion core, the main quad-core is essentially able to shut down completely, allowing your device to last much longer.

Poor HTC....Their phones need Quadcores just to run stock Sense smoothly, we'll be in for it when Sense 4 is released, it will need more than 1GB RAM. And no I'm not joking, HTC thinks adding cores fixes the lag in Sense, but they need to learn optimization, and bloated doesn't cut it.

That actually makes sense. Glad to see NVIDIA do some research with graphics vs battery life especially considering that their optimus GPU works wonders. I was thinking with four cores active at once, battery life will be complete crap. Still wouldn't do console level gaming on a smartphone because onscreen controls suck so much. A tablet, maybe.

SGSIII Specs leaked

From Cnet news,
SGSIII: 1.5ghz quad core exynos, 1080p 4.8" 16:9 screen, ICS, 8MP cam, LTE, ceramic body
Cnet article
wow i want it so baddddddd
Jaw dropping specs. Hopefully the report is accurate.
Read comments says 1080p is overkill on a smart phone display.
Well duh, can they not picture people attaching their smartphones to a HD TV or projector?
I think I am just sticking with Google devices from now on, if Samsung makes it or HTC (rumor). I am sick of the slow upgrade cycle; on ICS has been out almost 4 months..... way too slow.
How would they manage that kind of ppi?
That's like 459ppi. Galaxy Nexus is like 316ppi.

Being able to output 1080p via hdmi and actually having a 1080p screen are two different things. I do think that sort of pixel density is overkill and serves only to overwork the gpu.
I also think I prefer 16:10 to 16:9.

Only mentions that it will be a Super AMOLED Plus HD display, which makes me think (meaning I am just making a random guess) it's a nonpentile display like the Nexus, and so it would be 720, which is still awesome. I wouldn't mind being wrong, but it just seems like we would have heard about a break through in OLED tech before the specs were released.

-1280x720 Super AMOLED Plus HD @ 1.65"
-Sexy Body < 9mm Thin
-2000mAh+ Battery

Sounds amazing. I think Qualcomm has a lot of LTE licensing control in the US. Don't be surprised at the last minute the 1.5 ghz Quad Exynos is replaced by 1.7ghz Quad Snapdragon that runs 1/2 the speed.

I meant to say betanews, as that's where I read the article from, but it seems he too is quoting bgr, which, as u said is about as reliable as the national inquirer. If indeed these specs r tru that would be great, but on further investigation the exynos Chooser was only just recently been demoed to the public, let alone shipped with any Samsung devices, As the s3 has been in Dev for awhile, I'm more skeptical now. I honestly think it will still be a dual core exynos. U could always jump ship and get an HTC One X

<Rant> I would sell my skyrocket in a heartbeat for a phone that was even 80% as good but with a physical keyboard. Don't get me wrong, I luv my skyrocket, but texting and emails on ANY touchscreen is still cumbersome at best. Touchscreen intuitive with added keyboard is still the way to go in my opinion. This isn't a niche market, if a respectable manufacturer came out with something recent, people would flock to it as a viable alternative to crapberrys </Rant>

i really liked the features of this tablet.. 1080P+ screen, tegra 3 processor, great cameras with flash... but now im just really disappointed, and i want something thatll actually allow me to work with custom roms, i wanted to get all of the useless nonsense off my tablet, strip it down to the features i only cares about and not have tons of bloatware...
are there any tablets of equal performance and hardware features that is more friendly towards this?
the acer A700 looked nice but i really like the LED flash, makes great pictures even better, and i used it as a flashlight too
i see googles coming out with a nexus 10, but since these are made by asus i have a feeling theyre going to have the same problems, also, i dont believe its a tegra 3 processor?
what would your recommendations be?
Erm, maybe a Nexus 10?
Btw, someone is going to give you a link to this thread anyway, so I'll just save them the trouble: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846277

actually.. i just read a nexus 10 is made by samsung, not asus... interesting... hmm, how does the nexus 10s processor stand up to a 1.6ghz tegra 3 though?

It has an Exynos 5250. Quad-Core 1.7 GHz ARM15 (!). Yes, ARM15. Total monster processor. No mobile CPU beats it
There's a catch. Cyanogenmod dropped official support for all Exynos CPUs, but that shouldn't be a problem because it's a Nexus device, so you should expect a ridiculous amount of development and plenty of unofficial CM

so in short... the nexus 10 is the absolute beast of a tablet that puts all tablets its size to shame... with a higher resolution screen is it the true ipad killer people have been wanting?

Oh heck yes baby!
Problem 1... damn hard to get one in the Nexus rush 32GBs out of stock and maybe 16GB too...? Have to wait a while, but that's a good thing to let them sort out any issues with the first batch sold
Btw typo, the CPU is dual core, the GPU is quad core

Gs4 = Gs3+

Hi, I have been using the GS4 i9500 so called Octocore for 2-3 days. I had and still have the GS3 T-Mobile US variant for 6 months and love it. So once I bought the GS4 I thought this is going to be so much faster that comparing the dual core to 8 core I was thinking it was going to be like big difference. But now thatbim using it side by side I see no difference in anything. I think Samsung became the Apple.
Please dont fight, its just interesting how you guys feel?
I know we spent $750 to $850 on this, but dont you think this is not innovation?

You have a point here. Maybe the speeds aren't very visible , the S4 comes with all those fancy addons. And believe me I would buy the S4 and wouldn't regret. This is just my opinion

Well the S3 is still a good phone. Most people upgrade every 2-3 years, not every year.
Oh god, not this thread again.....
In before the lock in 3, 2, 1...
Take the bloat off of it then test.. bloatware is the biggest problem on every phone.
My gs3 is running super smooth for 3 days on one charge thanks to boeffla kernel and no bloat.

Im not buying it just for the speed though

Bloat isn't causing the lag. It's touchwiz. Jesus I've heard this nonsense so many times.
Lag is the worst issue to deal with and it's getting publicity. I'm sure Samsung will fast track an update.
Every new phone has issues.
Sense 3 use to cause lag and htc finally did something about it. I'm sure Samsung will be quicker about it.

How can a 8core phone feel the same as the 2core? Then we just need 1 big core like 3 gigahertz.

Hehe apparently I am not like most people
Now I use my galaxy note ii LTE as my work mobile (I work as a welder), when I come home I switch SIM to my galaxy s4. Before I got the s4, I used my s3 as my work phone. Now I use the s3 as my primary backup phone

I9500 version doesn't have 8 Cores working simultaneously.
Read the below link:
http://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-to-boost-performance-of-galaxy-s4-202912/
The Snapdragon is a quad-core while the Octa has eight cores. But here is the thing, the Octa is used in such a way that only four cores are used at any time. The chip has four low power Cortex A7 cores and four Cortex A15 cores. The A15 core is vastly superior in terms of performance, compared to the A7, but the A7 is great for battery life. So the Exynos Octa uses the A7 cores by default and then when things get busy the A15 cores are activated while the A7 cores are shut down. This means that the Exynos Octa only uses a maximum of four cores at once, making it the same as a quad-core processor but with some clever power saving technology.

If you don't like it sell it and move on. There are those of us that are very happy to have the S4 in hand right now. The 1080p, bigger battery, better processor, better GPU, slimmer profile, reduced weight, bigger screen, pixel density, 8 cores (yes it's only a combo of 4 cores now, but when linaro is updated soon it will be all 8). I traded my Note 2 for this and couldn't be happier.

Wasn't expecting this stupid thread for an experienced guy. Why the hell did you bought it then? People who buy any phone without doing proper research deserves to be ditched. Sorry for being too harsh, just give this phone some time, a few days and you will start loving it. It is multiple steps ahead of gs3. Many people have already quoted that this phone isn't slow, its just 4.2 is not fully optimized with GS4.

All 8 cores can be running at a same time with an updated kernel (3.8 Linux), but not available now.
essentially with the 1080p upgrade, it did need all the processing power upgrades. as far as everything else goes, opening apps and stuff like that depends more on the internal memory speeds, like having a solid state disk on your computer at home... so yea the gs3 was not slow.
when you get into gaming and other things like that, the gs4 was a huge upgrade. i personally am looking forward to the huge battery. it will compare to the gs3 (maybe a small boost) as far as the screen time goes but it'll be easily a 25% boost over the gs3 for standby times
also, technology can only go so fast. imo, it's part of moore's law really. samsung took the more common way around this, by adding more cores. also they took the route of changing the gpu type not just upgrading the same gpu.
the only thing that was not an upgrade, and its funny that everyone complains about it, is the internal memory size.
in a nutshell.. if you upgrade your phone every year, you wont get a huge upgrade in quality. and if you did, something was wrong with the design of the older phone.
im coming from a droid 3 and its going to be a MASSIVE upgrade for me. more than 4 times as powerful, with easily twice the amount of features if not more. almost twice the battery size, 1" larger screen.... 1080p instead of 540p lol

The Exynos 5 Octa CPU is not supposed to use 8 cores at the same time. It's created to use either the 4x A7 cores or the 4x A15 cores in the CPU. So yeah, that's how it's supposed to work
Oh also, this is to the op. I wouldn't call the Galaxy S IV for a Galaxy S III+. If you only looks at the design, then maybe yeah, but if you look on the new hardware, there are alot of new things in the Galaxy S IV that make it more than just a little upgrade from the Galaxy S III.
i love the gaming In GS4 rather than the Qualcomm One... 60Fps Awesome!
whatmore do you want from a phone..

The S3 is still a very capable phone and still competes today with all other new flagship phones.
