SGSIII Specs leaked - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

From Cnet news,
SGSIII: 1.5ghz quad core exynos, 1080p 4.8" 16:9 screen, ICS, 8MP cam, LTE, ceramic body
Cnet article

wow i want it so baddddddd

Jaw dropping specs. Hopefully the report is accurate.

Read comments says 1080p is overkill on a smart phone display.
Well duh, can they not picture people attaching their smartphones to a HD TV or projector?
I think I am just sticking with Google devices from now on, if Samsung makes it or HTC (rumor). I am sick of the slow upgrade cycle; on ICS has been out almost 4 months..... way too slow.

How would they manage that kind of ppi?
That's like 459ppi. Galaxy Nexus is like 316ppi.

Being able to output 1080p via hdmi and actually having a 1080p screen are two different things. I do think that sort of pixel density is overkill and serves only to overwork the gpu.
I also think I prefer 16:10 to 16:9.

"a bit" is both right and ambiguous. They repost articles from sites that repost articles from other sites. At least they usually point out things that sound too good to be true.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/10/details-on-the-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-leak-out-1-8ghz-dual-core-c/
Only mentions that it will be a Super AMOLED Plus HD display, which makes me think (meaning I am just making a random guess) it's a nonpentile display like the Nexus, and so it would be 720, which is still awesome. I wouldn't mind being wrong, but it just seems like we would have heard about a break through in OLED tech before the specs were released.

I heard google isnt going to be updating like usual anymore. Like their releasing their next updates to more phones rather than their nexus line. I mean this for next gen though.

All i need in a galaxy s 3:
-Quad Core Exynos @ 1.5GHz (LTE CAPABLE DAMMIT)
-1280x720 Super AMOLED Plus HD @ 1.65"
-Sexy Body < 9mm Thin
-2000mAh+ Battery
-LTE
-ICS
-8MP Camera (although 12 would be nice, but an improved 8MP is all i need)
That's pretty much it

Sounds amazing. I think Qualcomm has a lot of LTE licensing control in the US. Don't be surprised at the last minute the 1.5 ghz Quad Exynos is replaced by 1.7ghz Quad Snapdragon that runs 1/2 the speed.
---------- Post added at 08:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:48 PM ----------
I think my Skyrocket is good enough to keep me happy for 18 more months. And at that time, imagine what amazing tech we'll be able to get when it'll be time to renew.

I meant to say betanews, as that's where I read the article from, but it seems he too is quoting bgr, which, as u said is about as reliable as the national inquirer. If indeed these specs r tru that would be great, but on further investigation the exynos Chooser was only just recently been demoed to the public, let alone shipped with any Samsung devices, As the s3 has been in Dev for awhile, I'm more skeptical now. I honestly think it will still be a dual core exynos. U could always jump ship and get an HTC One X

<Rant> I would sell my skyrocket in a heartbeat for a phone that was even 80% as good but with a physical keyboard. Don't get me wrong, I luv my skyrocket, but texting and emails on ANY touchscreen is still cumbersome at best. Touchscreen intuitive with added keyboard is still the way to go in my opinion. This isn't a niche market, if a respectable manufacturer came out with something recent, people would flock to it as a viable alternative to crapberrys </Rant>

this is THE device that i am waiting on......the note will hold me over till the SGSIII is dropped. and i WILL be getting it. im hoping that they can keep the exynos though, but for some reason i doubt it.
either way it should be a beast of a device for the end users. im hoping by years end this device will be available to us.
keeps fingers crossed.

I wanna see how the Exynos matches the krait quad core before wasting more money.

What am I missing - Galaxy SII

I don't get what I am so suppose to be in love with when it comes to the SII vs Infuse 4g.
Now I am strictly comparing the US Specced SII (european I suppose as well since it is the same) vs Infuse 4g.
The infuse has a bigger screen and bigger battery.
The S2 has dual core and a small battery and smaller screen.
So I am going to get dual core eating monster with a smaller battery? Battery life on the Infuse is OK, good, but nothing crazy. The S2 must be awful?
Now if we were getting the 1.5ghz dual core with some form of LTE I could see a little more attraction.
personally though I'll be olding off for something better.
Dual core
1 gig of ram
It's only slightly smaller - actually feels better in your hand.
Gingerbread 2.3.4 from the carrier
Better GPS lock
I'm still wondering if it has the chip needed for voodoo sound though...
It's not a huge difference but you get gingerbread out the box, touchwiz 4.0, dual core, 1080p recording, hdmi(infuse as well), thx soluscado totally slipped my mind, etc. The infuse is ok but i'm probably getting rid of mine. The checkered loading is driving me crazy.
I agree with the OP. The dual core proc seems like a "meh" addition, especially considering the battery trade-off. I just don't use TouchWiz anyway, so that's irrelevant. The bigger screen is a BIG deal to me, and any video I take with my phone is displayed on my phone, so 1080p recording is irrelevant. I'm pretty sure you get HDMI out on the Infuse as well, but I have no use for that either. And the Gingerbread enhancements are so minor (to me) that I really couldn't care less whether it's available OOB or not.

What you said.
Yea no point. I'll stick with my infuse until samsung releases an lte phone on att like ours or the s2. Or wait for googles next phone and hope that is lte as well.
Dual core is not enough reason to upgrade, I want real 4g speeds.
Infuse running Serendipity VII
If the GPS chip is better than that of the infuse then I'm switching. I use the GPS more than anything else on the phone and that is a deal breaker for me. If the infuse had a perfect working GPS, I'd take it over the s2 anyday.

The battery life on the sgs2 i don't thinks all that bad. The battery.2 inch screen difference i hardly notice, gb is awesome. Mines yet to show any sign of lag at all. I haven't even touched the infuse since i got the sgs2. Once gb comes out ill use it. Until then though ill stick with gb and my dual core .

I know this topic has come up a few times in the month or so I've owned my infuse and watched these forums, and I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering if it's worth the switch to the AT&T-branded SGSII. Honestly the thing I'd have wanted most from the European SGSII was the physical Home button, but that didn't make it over here (needs more patent litigation).
I do agree that the .2" off the screen is actually a bonus; 4.3" screens feel a lot nicer when using to chat--somehow the AT&T SGSII is more than .2" off in both dimensions (4.96" x 2.60" vs. 5.2" x 2.8" according to Samsung). Still, a fifth of an inch either way isn't a deal-breaker for me either way.
The dual core SGSII processor is obviously the big difference, and I have yet to see anyone post a compelling, non-anecdotal reason to have a second core on a phone. I don't know many people who have felt their Infuse was insufficiently responsive, and no game I've run has had any noticeable lag on the Infuse, though my experience is hardly extensive.
Does anyone know how much RAM the AT&T SGSII has? If it had the full gig that the Euro version has, that'd also be a nice bonus, as I have managed to fill up the sub-half-gig that the Infuse has available.
The last feature I think deserves mention is NFC, which the ATT SGSII does have, reportedly. Not that I really expect to be paying by NFC any time soon, but what are we if not nerds who want more features on our phones?

There isn't a single thing that the Infuse beats the SGS II in. It ties in a few places like camera, but that's it. The SGS II is the best Android phone in existence, and the Infuse probably wouldn't have even been the best of 2010.

I don't think i can agree with that. I havent yet used one, but i cam say that having the largest and brightest display on the market is a huge plus for me. Regardless of whether it may seem like a better deal, i feel that the sgs2 is basically a smaller infuse. It looks the same and does all the same things. Really can't count gb as a plus either since we already have it on the infuse and an official version by the time the sgs2 is readily available to most. I can't see any advantage to 1080p either since it will just eat up more of that inferior battery. Just my 2 cents.
Edit: on top of all that, i don't know why u said 2010? you meant 2011? even if that was so i find that hard tp believe also. Considering that feature for feature, the Infuse was the best overall android device you could buy here in the U.S. when it was released. That said, the only real reason the Infuse hasn't out sold the competition is the lack of hype behind it and a very quiet release by Samsung. Quite unlike the sgs2 which is released first in their most local market. It obviously is pointed towards the more general technophile audience. The infuse i feel was directed towards the huge media phone freaks.

Galaxy models coming soon (Note, SII LTE, SII LTE HD) shopping poll.

i9000 is currently more than 1 year old, and some may currently be considering their next upgrade/purchase, which model you consider to be the next leading Galaxy phone?
I just bought my Galaxy S, its 1 month old, ill stick with it for another year or so and then upgrade to galaxy s II
Ill stick to my sgs a year more, maybe 1 and a half so maybe galaxy s 3 or 4 or maybe note 2 .
hit thankxx if i helped. sent from my mind through telepathy (ya its possible)!
im just gonna wait for s3 now. im on an 18month contract so sorta tied to sgs until next march anyway might as well hold out until s3 is out there then get on at the bleeding edge
I am curious to see what the the HD screen will look like. It will probably be pentile again, will the resolution be high enough to please my eye? Maybe.
Probably won't buy an S2 though, hoping for a beefier GPU in the S3.
Seeing as the SGS2 GPU is not really out-classing the SGS, I wonder how it will cope with the HD resolution. I'm thinking a higher tier of performance (like the huge future gains nvidia is bragging about, or even something like the SGX543MP2 in the ipad2) will be welcome with newer titles at HD resolution.
I'm torn between the Galaxy Note (1.4Ghz) and SII LTE HD (1.5Ghz).
Both with great screen HD resolution, huge sizes, new exynos processor with better battery life, upgraded GPU and other small changes.
SIII is rumoured to have similar specs, maybe a better screen, so don't know if it's actually worth waiting.

'Similar', I think a more heavier word like ' better ' would have fitted into the line, sgs3 is rumoured to have a 2.0 quad core(4 cores) processor and 1.5gb ram( rumoured by many big tech news sites like engadget.com,thisismynext.com,phonearena.com,gsmarena.com),also a 10mp camera is rumoured at back, and a 5mp ffcamera is rumoured ( just read that in 1 article so the news is not so strong and dependable).
And I don't think 'bigger screen size' means bigger phones, if you compare sgs2 international version and sgs2 hd (korean) version then the latter one has a way bigger screen but if you see the lower button pannel, you will notice the buttons have been made smaller and wider so that the device is still not that big and is still just a notch bigger than original sgs2's 'body size'. ;-)

Hm I remember it not being very impressive in the early benchmarks, barely beating the SGS and losing to tegra2. They did say it could be early drivers though. I'd love to see recent comparisons but nobody seems to be doing them.

Look on Anandtech. The Mali 400 is almost as good as the SGX540, the Tegra2 and the Adreno 220.... combined!
LTE will likely be the catalyst to get a new phone. Aside from the fact that the technology is quicker, there will be less people using it.
And you can't go past a phone with 720p!

T-Mobile SGS2 vs G2x VS Sensation?

So I've narrowed my choices down to the Sensation 4G, SGS2, And G2X.
I was a EVO 4G, and EVO 3D owner from sprint, thats why the Sensation is up their. As a tech guy, not having a phone is killing me on the inside. I REALLY like the SGS2 with its huge and vibrant screen. But the G2x is MUCH cheaper (I'm a student and I have really no credit, I have to pay $200 deposit w/ any contract) and the G2x specs don't look too bad, no 4G though ): I tested the 4G in my area at the local store and got ~22mb/s at the store on the demo phone... Could probably get even better... I can wait until next week for the extra $$$ to get the SGS2 (I do have enough for it now, but not for everything else and diving into my savings is a big no-no for me). Whats the cyanogen community like for these 2 phones? I WILL be putting it on either phone... I know CES is in a few days, but its not like a Tegra 3 phone will be coming out anytime soon. The Tmobile SGS2 has the snapdragon S3 CPU/GPU, the G2x is Tegra 2 while the Sensation is the S2? If anybody has owned any of these phones and can tell me about using them, that would be great. I need the pro's and cons and cons and the hidden problems.
I have the G2x which i absolutely love!! No Problems whatsoever, lots of development too. However if I had a choice i would probably get the SGS2. Just because It looks Awesome! i see/feel no big difference in perfomance personally when i played with it in the store, but that again was only in the store. As im sure youve read, there are a few G2x's out there that have there issues, screen bleed (minor) Reboots (sucks), etc. I was blessed to have one with zero issues, ive heard that the update that now rolls out stock out of the box has fixed the issues. either way, the G2x is rock solid for me ive owned it since June, and have put everything from CM7, EB, Weapon and everything in between, I really love how Weapon G2x is and use it as my daily.
I would say Sensation. Build quality, more development, and QHD screen
It has the same CPU as the SGS2 BTW (S3) It has better support for Cyanogenmod also
If the tmo SGS2 had a Exynos cpu, I would have chosen it.
Don't listen to the bias fanboy...get the SGSII. Read the official review on androidcentral...they notice no difference between the international SGSII and the T-mobile version. Oh wait..they did notice the bigger more beatiful screen!

Although the T989 isn't even officially supported at all either....

I just switched from a HTC Nexus running CM7 nightlies, to a T-Mobile SGS2 on Friday. Disappointed in the ROMs that are out there now and general lack of development - I'd done some half ass'd research before picking it up, I was looking at it and the Amaze 4g, and thought it had some better support.
That being said, rooted, put Clockwork and flashed Juggernaught on it Friday night, it has been working flawlessly. I would highly recommend it.

seriously?
800x480 on a 4.5" screen is good for you?
to me a true SGS2 is the international version.
what the hell were executives at Tmous thinking?
atleast with the Senny you get a higher resolution screen and good build quality.
for crying out loud...
I was very close to getting a Sensation...until I found out half the phones have dust issues due to a manufacturing defect.
Knowing that, I just had to go with an AMOLED screen (no dust issues). I didn't feel like spending $500 on a SSG2, so I just bought a Vibrant for $180 on eBay. I get to play with ICS and the phone's not too bad.
I also don't think I can go back to an LCD phone ever again. lol

There is not a big difference in resolution from qhd to 800x480. I don't know why people act like your using vga resolution stretched out on a 60 inch screen. Also the htc has had ridiculous hardware failures. Like dust underneath the screen and two different manufacturers for screens. The power button has also been know to sink in. Just because it's made out of metal doesn't mean it's a better phone.
If you want more development go with the sensation if you want a big phone with less development go with Samsung galaxy s2.

noticeable when reading ebooks or text in general.
also, edges are crisper on pics in general, less pixelation too.
I notice these things and it would drive me nuts. (one of the reasons why I opted for the Senny instead of the SGS2)
perhaps some people can't... way the human eye perceive things differ slightly I guess from person to person.
anyway, I've had zero issues with my phone. no dust under the screen, no issues with my power or volume button.
amount of defects are actually far less then it really is I would bet.
it's just people that have problems are vocal whereas people do not aren't.
from what I read, HTC has fixed all the issues. just the initial run had some I guess.
mine is from the first run. pre-ordered and received the day of release.

Uhh, yes there is. Completely different processor. You have a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon instead of the Exynos in the Sprint, AT&T, and International version. While it's no slouch, it doesn't even come close to the Exynos in terms of GPU capabilities. If you're gonna get the GSII, get a REAL GSII. No disrespect, it's a great phone and I'm sure has a great community, but again, completely different internals. It doesn't have the Mali 400 GPU.

He said they didn't notice any difference, he didn't say that there wasn't a difference. The 1.5 gHz Qualcomm vs. the 1.2 gHz Exynos was pretty close/the same in day to day usage, doesn't mean it will in benchmark tests.

in what way may I ask?

HD?

Okay. So me and my mother are switching to AT&T soon, from Sprint. The skyrocket is the phone I'm going to go with, however I'm trying to figure out whether I should get the Skyrocket or use an old phone to hold me over until the skyrocket HD comes out? Yeah I know the only difference will be price and of course screen resolution but I don't want to get stuck for 2 years with 800x480 pixels when in a year we'll probably see like 3480x2140. Lol I'm wondering though, will the skyrocket HD have a decent amount of development? All I need is of course cm7/9 and or MIUI. I was also wondering, will it use the same roms and themes as the original Skyrocket since its the same phone just with a higher resolution screen? If that's the case I'm going to just wait for the HD. Which I'll probably do anyways. Just wanted to ask these questions. Thanks guys.

there are these 3 letters that everyone NOT on TMo/Sprint like:
L
T
E
The original poster already said he was conflicted on whether to get the Og or the HD because he didn't want to be left behind with an obsulete version. I say get the HD, my phone having the latest features helped me pick the skyrocket. I knew I would never be happy with a phone knowing LTE was out.

My Skyrocket is better than the SGS2 for AT&T (i777) I had previously: equivalent UI/app speed, much faster data, bigger screen, equivalent battery life.
What was your point?
By the time HD skyrocket hits retail the SGS 3 should be coming out.

Development between the Skyrocket and HD will likely see a huge amount of overlap. Adapting ROMs from one to the other will likely require little more than a recompile. So in that regard, ultimately the two models are good for us, brings more people into the fold.
So don't worry about the HD getting neglected. If that's your concern, wait it out.
You might also want to consider the regular Galaxy S II. All it's missing is LTE, and it's cheaper, available right now, already has ICS, and the Exynos is generally considered to be the more powerful chip (although the difference isn't that huge, they're both very speedy phones).

In Korea or whatever. We never get that stuff until 6 months later.
Even if you get the HD another phone that's better will probably come out. Besides isn't the battery life going to be worse on HD than on the OG rocket?

my advice is to wait for the HD and see how it compares performance, battery wise etc and then make a decision. Not sure the snapdragon or any processor can handle almost 3X more pixels with ease.

It doesn't really work that way. The HD Super AMOLED screen isn't going to use more just because of its resolution. Super AMOLED Plus in our phones demonstrated much lower power consumption, despite a huge increase in subpixel resolution compared to the Super AMOLED panels in the first Galaxy S.
I mean the screen may or may not be a greater power draw. I haven't seen any comparisons. But I wouldn't assume it is just because it's HD resolution.

This is a legit concern. Not that the chip can't handle it; It's at the very least better equipped to do so than the OMAP in the Galaxy Nexus. But there's surely a performance hit to be taken by running at a much higher resolution.
The Galaxy S II LTE WIMAX came out here in Japan recently with the HD resolution. The screen is slightly bigger than the LTE/Skyrocket but the AMOLED technology is the same as the previous Galaxy S II.
The screen is very nice, perhaps a little better than the LG Optimus LTE HD (Nitro) in terms of viewing angle and brightness, however it's not the same as the super AMOLED plus in the LTE/Skyrocket which is quite vivid by comparison.
Text on the WIMAX is very readable, and nicer to read than on the LTE, however some people might find it a little too small. I've always been a 1080p guy, but have found myself straining my eyes on small screens these days. A 10.1" tablet would just about be the minimum size for full HD.
The smaller size resolution and screen on the LTE makes panel transition smoother (the Galaxy S II is smoother still), the HD panels of the WIMAX is hefty work for the same processor also used by the LTE, if speed is your priority then I would recommend waiting for the second generation HD phones to come out with much faster processors.
I had a feeling that the HD panels wouldn't be as bright being a first generation type which was why I went for the LTE, it may probably be the last of the 800x480 type but it will be the best it can be.
Anyway and we are still subjected to regular Android changes that may produce more HD based applications, so who knows where this will be heading. It will benefit tablets more because the higher resolution helps, but not sure on mobile phones.
The only reason I would say wait is if the resolution is that big of a deal to you.
Personally I went from the 4" Atrix with a higher resolution to the 4.5" Skyrocket with a lower resolution, so it bugged the ****ing hell out of me (made me feel like an old person phone with the huge ass buttons). It was fixed with the "LCD Resolution" app; I'm now running at 914 x 548 with the Skyrocket and this phone is everything I've ever wanted.
Like others have said, when the Skyrocket is announced there will be other phones that you will want and will just have to wait even longer.

I have the Galaxy Captivate, the AT&T Galaxy S II, and the Skyrocket.
The captivate served me well. Still is kicking ass with ICS on it.
The AT&T Galaxy S II is nice, fast and a good phone.
But I use the skyrocket because it's JUST as fast as the GS II, it's got LTE and a bigger screen (My screen looks fine, great actually).
I had some battery issues with a rom but flashed again and It's been kicking along just fine. 12 hours later , still got 63% battery left.

Ok nevermind about fitting more apps. Tried out ADW Launcher and it works beautifully. Only pita is having to go back to stock resolution to install some things in the market then setting everything up again...

I wouldn't really say shafted, the dual core is faster and more power efficient than the previous S3 CPU and you get 2GB of ram rather than 1GB making multitasking much smoother. I've been hearing the Exynos quad to be a monster at eating battery if not tweaked (disable 2 cores etc...) and there are barely any apps/games that support more than 1 thread for phones aside from benchmarks. Thats pretty much like getting a 6 or 8 core CPU for PC yet the games/programs you use only use 2-4 cores and the only real benefit is if you use 3d programing/rendering/casting/encoding etc... but if you go to phone usage, doubt many utilize the full dual core.
So while the S4 only has 2 cores its still fast, if you have a quad core version of it you get this:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/24/qualcomm-snapdragon-s4-pro-apq8064-benchmark/
And we know getting that type of benchmark wont really be battery friendly will it?
later man. enjoy the gs3.

What exactly will a better CPU offer, at this moment. I mean that in the sense that I don't see where my experience would improve in any way. Perhaps SwiftKey won't have an occasional hick up but even that's no guarantee. Besides that there's nothing I can do on an S3 that won't operate with the same usability as it would on my S2.
Still, to each his own, for me the only improvement would be resolution which I would unfortunately ruin with the nice feel of a matte anti glare cover. What I want is an S3 with guaranteed software updates going forward. Meaning ill be waiting until the next Nexus.

If we take from a hardware standpoint here are the key differences:
CPU:
Snapdragon S3 MSM8260 45nm 1.5GHz (Dual Core)-> Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 28nm 1.5GHz (Dual Core)
(Here we see the die shrink, with die shrinks on new architecture you can see battery improvements, temperature improvements and clock per clock speeds its faster)
GPU:
Adreno 220 -> Adreno 225
RAM:
1GB Single Channel -> 2GB Dual Channel
Display:
480x800 -> 720x1280
Gorilla Glass 1 -> Gorilla Glass 2
Of course there is a lot of other features/hardware that are "better" such as camera and stock battery etc...
In terms of the phone itself, the SR is not lacking since its still a dual core phones while other phones are still single and working their way to dual core. Quad core are starting to arise but they wont be as efficient for a while since the games/apps we use will not take advantage of all the cores. That being said by the time we do utilize them most likely there will be a newer and better hardware. Also 720p may start becoming the next standard in display as "HD" is making its way onto phones. If you think about hardware difference, think of Samsung Galaxy S2 as 1, Skyrocket as 1.5 and Galaxy S3 as 2. S3 (North America) is still dual core but it is an efficient/fast CPU.
Good example of this is like PC specs:
Q6600 = Quad (65nm)
Q9550 = Quad (45nm)
i5 760 = Quad (45nm)
i5 2500K = Quad (32nm)
i5 3570K = Quad (28nm)
What I mean about that is the standard has started to become quad in the CPU/laptop world but the big difference is the efficiency(power consumption), speed (clock per clock) and maybe other supported hardware features.
So is it a big step up?.... Yes and no, yes because hardwarewise it is better but the SR isnt lacking to the point where ICS/JB lags on it or any other apps/games atm. Of course if you have insane graphical games maybe it will slug the SR in terms of performance but thats entirely on what you use it for. Ask the same question next year and you'll probably hear the same, the S3 is not lacking but xxx (S4 or whatever is "faster"). Technology will always get better its just whether you want to pay to get the latest and greatest or not.
I buy my gear based on my use. You wont see me buying computers that are 6-8 cores, Quad SLI/CFX video cards or whatever because I don't need them lol. My hardware is fully capable of playing the current games so thats what I usually upgrade for, my uses.
If you compare the SR to the S3 of course you will see a good difference but if you only use the phone for facebook, instagram, twitter, calling, texting, whatever, the SR can do those. Now if it can't do those and its slow and always dying on you and programs aren't working and super super sluggish then yeah those are the reasons for the upgrade.
Now if we go to the development side yes, phones like Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S2 (original) and Galaxy S3 will have big support as most people get them when they first come out so if you want to look for it in that view they have more popularity. Some people want to get the phones that everyones getting while others don't want the "same exact" one but on a similar page.
Way to go and spoon feed insane amount of info lol... Good stuff
