First let me start by saying hello to everyone and how much i love this website for its plethora of information!! I am have attempted for 6 hours today in attempt to fix my problem and will only post a thread as last resort. I have reached my last resort. Here is how it all started....
Today i decided that i wanted to have the new updated Android Market so i could pay for apps using my tmo account. i noticed that my cyanogen 4.2.15.1 and the previous ones before do not use the updated market (from what i have found, it causes some problem), but i was unable to find a way to just update the market. i have also been toying with the idea of switching roms (i have used cyanogen since i rooted my phone almost a year ago) and was thinking of a super fast Hero rom. From my research, i found one that i thought was the best of the best. getting in a little over my head and doing the proper research and educating myself, i jumped in (not a normal move for me, i tend to collect as much info as i can before a make this type of move but i was work and bored ). so i downloaded and flashed a new rom. here are a few things i did wrong:
I did not wipe before i updated to the new rom
I mistakenly flashed a Hero rom for a 32A phone, thinking mine was 32a (idiot)
I did not change my radio or spl's (from what i am now reading, that was a big mistake too)
so, obviously, the rom did not take and it froze on the green mytouch 3g screen for 40 minutes. no big deal, i thought a would just wipe it, then try again. same result. ok, i will just restore to my nandroid backup........unable to restore . panic started creeping in. ok, i will just redownload the 4.2.15.1 cyanogen i had and WIPE and flash it. after attempting this many many times, it still freezes on the green mytouch 3g screen. i even thought of using an older cyanogen, 4.2.9.1 i believe, thinking they use old info that was still on my phone. no luck. i have a feeling i am missing something very obvious and will feel totally stupid when you guys help me, but, i am stuck.
I would love to have a kick ass Hero rom and if someone can explain to me the proper way of doing so with a recommendation of the most kick assey one, that would be greatly appreciated, or if someone can kindly assist me to get back to my original cyanogen rom, that would also rock. thank you in advance and i know you guys will make whole again!
I have been flashing roms like crazy since they hit and I love to tinker, but I'm about to leave on vacation and need my call quality to be clear, I'd like to be able to use wireless hot spot and I wanted to have the fastest speeds possible.
It took a little while and I won't step you through the entire process, but here's what I did and where I found the info.
I'm assuming you've already got root so I'll skip that.
1) flash attn1's stock rooted rom found here
This ROM already has side loading enabled so you can install non market apps.
2) enable wireless tether. I'm shocked that it works, but it seems to work. Thread is here.
3) Turn on HSUPA. This one is a bit more complicated so I'll explain it.
you will need a file manager on the phone that will let you access the file system. There are several on the market, but Root Explorer is easiest to use.
In root explorer navigate to /system set the file system to r/w. Find the build.prop file. This is the file we want to edit. make a backup first, so long press the build.prop file and rename it to build.prop.bak. Now long press on build.prop again and choose open in a text editor. Root explorer has one built in. The 4th line down should say ro.ril.hsxpa=x. Change that value to 3 press menu choose save changes. Go into settings/applications and turn off fast boot. Reboot and you will have high speed data, sideloading, and tethering all enabled with stock Inspire sound.
Figuring all this out took about an hour of searching/reading and tinkering but it was worth it. Hope someone finds this helpful.
EDITED TO ADD:
Thanks to the guys who figured this all out for me. All I had to do was a little research. They did the heavy lifting.
I am a total noob when it comes to flashing ROMS etc.. What has to be done first in order to apply these to my phone? My phone is bone stock and nothing has been done to it. Is there a guide on how to get to the point where you say "I'm assuming you've already got root so I'll skip that". Thanks for any help.
start here
Thanks. So, all I need to do is create a gold card in order to root, then follow your how to? Can I use part 1 of r34p3rex's video tutorial till the end then follow your guide?
Thanks
Gunny- Thanks for your posts. You're really active in this forum, but keep things easy to understand. I am a moderately knowledgable user (the most dangerous kind) and I appreciate your posts tremendously. I'm not about to leave AHD as I love to be able to theme things! Once we get attn1's rooted stock deodexed, I'll be all over that again.

Get rooted then come back to this. and Please spend about a day reading the stickies before you root your phone.
I changed the value to 3 but still have slow upload speeds. Any ideas?
Never mind. I turned off fast boot and rebooted. Went from 700k down 250k up, to 2700k down, 1200k up.
Nice!
Finally, speeds that make my iPhone pals envious
THis sounds great, I'll try when I get off work tonight

Wow, you are awesome. I did change the value to 3 and saw no change after reboot but I did disable fast boot and both upload and download speeds are A LOT faster. Used to get 1000kbps down and 158kbps up and now thanks to Gunny and you, harlenm, my speeds are 1900kbps down with 1467kbps up. WOOHOO! THANKS GUYS!
Glad y'all are finding this helps. I edited the Op to add the step for disabling fastboot. Thanks for that.

Hey gunnyman, nice to see you over here in the Inspire forums. I am familiar with you from the Captivate side. I just got my Inspire on Tuesday, am rooted and running Attn1's Inspire DHD ROM with the stock radio. Do you notice a marked improvement in the Audio between the two ROMS with the stock Radio? I will probably give this a flash sometime this morning to try it out. Stock seems nice enough for me right now.
Thanks
Yeah that really made my day! I had terrible speeds prior to this with the inspire, but now it feels like a new phone again. I had the iphone 4 before with higher data speeds. With the the inspire 4G i was getting terrible speeds. I was on the phone complaining to them about the data speeds and they kept telling me that the area I am in is congested and theres nothing they can do. Well... a little tinkering with the settings, and problem solved!

The only sound I have found acceptable is the Stock Rooted. The radio makes no difference. there's something going on with the stock kernel and drivers. With source dropping a couple of days ago I'm sure it will get sorted out before long.
There seem to be a lot of us Captivate defectors on Inspires now

Yeah, it is pretty tinny, I have to say. I'm sure it'll get straightened out. I jumped for the GPS. Even though I don't use it all that much, especially while moving, and the devs over there had it fixed pretty good for standing still, it just bothered me way too much. Going to flash this in a bit.
Edit to ask: It seems as tho flashing a ROM over another (at least Sense to Sense) all I have to do is clear cache and flash? It even seemed to maintain my settigns/apps/app data when I went from Revolution to Inspire DHD yesterday. Is it really that easy? No flashing to stock and master clear first?

correct. Since there's no "lag fix" silliness to deal with and HTC actually uses a "standard" file system in its phones, all you need to do is wipe data and clear dalvik cache.
You don't have to wipe data, but I do it anyway.
Except my speeds are back to crap after reinstalling the rom. Arghh
Just redo the build prop.

thanks for this. I will be doing this to my inspire tonight!
Sup xda, my names Bilal and this is my first time posting here. I do have a question though but I've got a lot I want to talk to you guys about
I got my tmobile mytouch 3g about 4 days ago. On the first day my cousin had already told me about this site and how beneficial it would be to me real soon xD. The next day I had already begun looking up important things i needed to know to end up with a custom rom on my phone. I looked up the specifications to my phone (like checking the radio and SPL versions) I found out my phone was a 32B and had new SPL and Radio. I found out the Roms that would be compatible with my phone as well as the method to go about doing it. the next 2 days basically consisted of my going through over like 15-20 different methods over my phone (but all of them basically had the same routine). I mean, you have to root it then get a custom recovery than flash the custom rom. But this is simplified as I'm pretty sure i searched and found 3-4 different ways for the simplified root recovery rom steps. Anyways it was real frustrating since I failed many times on all 3 steps . Anyways with the new SPL Radio 32b Mytouch phone 2.2.1 (since i idiotically upgraded it to 2.2.1) just flashed cyanogenmod 6.1.0 about 30 minutes ago. Haha I'm so excited to see the possibilities.
I wanted to thank this whole site and the people from the unlockr because i searched a ton of guides and Google'd over 50 questions to figure out the process suited for me and even though it ended being extremely easy compared to the people who had to work hard to develop all the things involved in making Rom Manager, Clockworkmod and Armons Custom recoveries, and every easy step in the process that we take for granted. I didn't have a clue in programming scripting developing software or ROM's for anything before flashing my phone. After doing it I still don't have much of a clue even though I feel like I did learn a whole lot I know I'm way more interested in learning how things work.
You could have probably skipped this whole essay and went straight to the question though xD.
My question at this point was what exactly are all the possibilities (or some that I'm not aware of) that my phone has now that it has flashed cyanogenmod 6.1.0
One thing that I have definitely noticed and feel that alone, was worth the 4 days of tirelessly failing, is that my phone has become a lot faster, and I mean in everything that it does, from opening applications to loading videos on youtube. I know I could probably search this as well but I just wanted to advice directed towards me as far as what to do next? Ive been messing around with the themes (can only use ADW as far as I know) but was wonting to find a live unlock pattern screen? I found one on youtube and I'm 90 percent sure the guy had the exact same phone as me. Also any advice on details for upgrading the overall performance on my device would be great help.
Thanks guys glad to be here
Glad that you learned some stuff. Stay around here for a while and you'll learn alot more. Anyways, yes, there are many possibilities available for you. For one, I would advise updating to CyanogenMod 7. Just go here: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/htc-slide and choose a category to suit you. NB: The "Experimental" build category is not as "dangerous" as it sound. These build are actually Release Candidates which mean they are almost (if not) good enough to be a Stable build. Since you're just beginning, you may just want to use a stable build for now. But later on, you may change your mind. There are also many apps you may want to try like: SetCPU (to make your device even faster than it is now and/or to save battery life, Titanium Backup, Rom Manager, etc. ADW is NOT the only launcher you can use. It just came as the main launcher for your rom. There are many other launchers like Launcher Pro, etc. For the "live lockscreen pattern, you could try Ripple Lock (Honeycomb Lockscreen) or the sense 3.0 lockscreen found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190071 . Cheers!
ok. I started my phone from scratch earlier. Everything was fine. Flashed Final-fixed. Everything was fine. Got a few apps back, everything was fine. After a while, I flashed the Booster... rebooted, and now my status bar/notification bar is GONE! On boot, I get an error about systemui problem had to force close. How can I fix this?
Exact error, which came up when in SetCPU, which is also giving me problems:
The application Status Bar (process com.android.systemui) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
Final fixed already comes with booster. You're constantly having problems no one else is. You're not reading. You're flashing randomly. You're not doing things right. If you don't want problems go back to stock, or you can read carefully and not just flash willy nilly

No man, I DO READ. I read it all. Sometimes I get a little confused about what some things are, but I'm not a dev, and this is my first smart phone. I'm NOT flashing randomly, either. Jesus, man not everyone can just jump right into this stuff and know it all. If you didn't want to offer a little help or a solution, don't be an ass. I'm trying to learn ffs. I was under the impression that val final and val black were different.

If someone had help to offer you're gonna have to wait for it. You're spamming the hell out of the board, so how about YOU quit being an ass.
I don't think you're reading at all. You're doing more typing and flashing than reading. If you don't understand how something works, why are you flashing it? You should be trying to understand how it's going to affect your device.
My advice: reflash valhalla final, don't install any tweaks. Valhalla final is one of the most stable roms out there and it's been used as the base for at least 3 roms that have been posted.
Here's a lot of reading for you:

Thanks, that's better man. FYI, i'm not posting the same stuff everywhere. I'm reading and learning stuff, then trying to see what I can do. It's not all the same posts, just like the last 5 of mine have been about the notification bar, but all different querys. I'll clean it up tho, after I get sorted out. Also, I've already read the whole wiki, and the ENTIRE threads for all the things I've considered flashing.
Oh, how do I get into my phone if I cant pull down the notification bar to connect USB?
Never mind. I know already. Mount USB in CWM sry.,
Just an update after lots of troubleshooting, in case anyone might run across the same problem and did as I did:
I added the paid version of SetCPU to system/apps in the zip of the ROM I was flashing. I guess that's what was causing the issues, because now everything is stable. I kept Paid ADW Launcher, replacing the stripped down version, also a modified SystemUI.apk, framework-res.apk, and twframework-res.apk. All three from the zip I got from UOT Kitchen. So, now this great rom is even greater, and HIGHLY customized. Dont know why the modified crucial apks will work, but it wouldn't take the addition of setcpu...
If you pushed those apk's without rebooting to recovery and fixing permissions that will throw all the force closes.

After I figured out what you meant by 'pushing', I got it sorted out just like you said. Thanks man!
I bought my Charge about a year ago (still no 4G in our area but that's a whole other discussion . . .) and figured I'd wait until the manufacturer warranty expires before rooting my phone.
I glanced over the development page and noticed that JT is still working on ICS but it's not yet fully ready. Does anyone have a recommendation regarding which ROM to root to my phone? It will be the first time I've ever routed a device before but I know how to follow instructions, so I assume I'll be fine.
Any recommendations anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, guys!

Either Tweaked or Eclipse. Essentially, they're our only two choices, but they're both good quality. For kernels, most people like Imnuts' PBJ kernel.
Yeah, I was looking at that one (someone else suggested that one and the transparent ICS theme). It looks like one of the links comes already bundled with the PBJ you mentioned so I'll probably get that one.
One question I did have was regarding EX4. I don't know if I need it or not. I have a stock SDA card but I don't know how to check if it's EX3 or EX4 or if I even need that portion . . . I'd rather not have to wipe my SD card but it's really not all that hard to backup to a computer so I guess it's not a huge deal. I'd rather not do an extra step I don't need to do though.
So yeah, is there anywhere in the forums that talk about EX3 or EX4? I searched in these forums and found a few articles about it but I still don't know if it's something I need or not.

I'm pretty sure EXT4 conversion does not affect external memory. It will only convert the data/dbdata/cache/system partitions to the newer file system. So no need to worry about your SD card. Personally, I would not recommend converting to EXT4 at this point. There is always a chance you can corrupt your internal partitions and brick your device. It is very difficult to hard brick a Charge, but from what I can recall those that have have been a result of a bad ext4 conversion. Ever since the Gingerbread OTA was rolled out, RFS has been more than adequate for the Charge. While you do get higher benchmark scores with EXT4, difference in real world usage is negligible (from my experience).
And Tweaked is by far the best current ROM for this phone. It is hands down the best ROM ever made for the Charge. If Eclipse is ever updated again, I would give that one a chance too.
In my opinion, the only reason to convert to ext4 on EP4 or FP1 is to make nandroid backups work. If you don't intend to use nandroid, no reason to convert.
ext4 definitely has significantly higher I/O throughput, but you'll only see it in benchmarks. You won't see any difference in the real world.
Tweaked gets my vote and as for kernels go, an increasing number of people prefer the stock kernel over PBJT for various reasons. Try both to see what works best for you.

I use Tweaked, and am very happy with it. I've tried PBJ kernel several times with EXT4, but can't get rid of some lag issues, so I keep going back to the stock kernel.

I like tweaked - plus it gets the most support right now. I think the eclipse developer has a newer phone, so that ROM has probably seen it's last update.
additionally, you've also got great themers here like Blackness, etc...
finally, you don't have to choose a custom ROM when rooting - you can still stick with stock or a debloated/deodexed ROM. but that will lack the bells and whistles of a tweaked or Eclipse.
also keep in mind that there are very easy ways to revert back to stock (just ask blackness - I think he did that 28 times over a 10-hour span last weekend ) so VZW will never know that your phone has been rooted....
I have what is probably a very silly, basic question. If I want to root my phone to using tweaked 2.2, should I be following this guide (except with Tweaked, rather than GB 2.3.4)?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580
Is there another guide you would recommend?
Also, I'm hoping to read a bit more about all the terminology for rooting phones, all the basics, etc. I've been able to find a couple of general guides (in this forum and using google) and each one teaches me a little bit but I figured I'd ask the masters. If you were just starting to look into this, what guide/articles/pages would you recommend reading?

That's as good of a guide as I've seen. I don't think I've ever had to "tap" the power button to get into download mode, fwiw. Just hold Vol down and plug it in.
There's not a whole lot you can screw up that Odin can't fix. Just make absolutely certain that your computer does not lose power and that your device does not become unplugged during any Odin'ing you do. I'd recommend going over to www.imnuts.org and pulling the EP4D and Charge.pit files in the event that you need to back out. Having them on your computer will save you the headache later on.
As far as guides, most of them are going to be really dated. The Charge community is winding down, and those of us who are left are generally pretty helpful and patient when it comes to questions. We don't have much in the way of guides because there is no large influx of newbies ever coming our way to clog up the forum. If you pay attention to Rootzwiki, there is a new fella who tried to do things on his own and got really frustrated by the lack of info. That lack of info is probably due to the fact that none of us really need it.
That said, if you run into a question, just ask. If nothing else, I'll try to help you out.
I had a babyzilla turn off my computer during the Odin process, and I was able to fully recover. So no real danger there.
Also, www.chargeforums.com has also got some helpful how to threads as well.

I've read that you can get hosed if it stops in the middle of flashing the modem? I don't know if there's any validity to that.
Not really sure where it was the process, but it happened a few tines. The first two times were due to a certain web page freezing up my PC.

For the record, I put Tweaked 2.2 w/PBJ on my charge, used tweaktools to add Transparent ICS and it looks and runs great. If anyone was considering whether or not to use it, I'd highly recommend it.
Thanks for your help, everyone!
