After 6+ years with a Windows Smart Phone (1st MPX220) I see the platform is dead and I have to go elsewhere. I am thinking of going to the Captivate. I like the new BB also but I am not sure if I want a crack berry. I think the Captivate will be more fun to have in the long run.
The cheapest I can find the phone with a 2 extention and keeping my old plan is Best Buy for $149 plus a $30 one time credit to my account.
I am wondering how to get I get all my texts and info from my old phone to my new phone. I have used PPCPIMbackup when doing firmware updates to my phone to back up all my info. Does this work with Captivate also? I am not sure because of the different OS.
I have never had a phone with out a keypad. This will be new for me. I wish I could have a phone with one. I see having a nice slim phone will also be nice. I think the keyless pads is how all phones exept for BB will be very soon.
Does anyone have any good tips or information before I go over to this phone? I know going from a Windows phone to this is going to be very different.
Thanks,
Swype makes everything all good.

I'm using the xda app so can't see your sig, what phone are you coming from? I've used winmo for about 2 yrs and love this phone. Not sure how to copy things over, seen alot of posts with problems. Best I've seen is manually enter em in google and sync that way. I just used my sim card. Didn't have a bunch of special contact info to copy.
From a phone on an app
I am coming form the Samsung Epix.
Anyone know if the PPCPIMbackup software will work on getting my old texts to my new phone?

I also migrated from the Epix... you will not be sorry. With regard to your question about transfering texts, generally anything is possible in Android, and a quick google search confirms this:

I gave up on my Epix. Were you one of the lucky ones?
The Captivate is a wonderful phone, if you don't mind waiting for a GPS fix.
My own experience: I was concerned about the lack of a physical keyboard, but found that swype makes things easy. However, I am more frustrated that I expected at the lack of really good business applications in android (I am waiting for Pocket Informant android, specifically). Also, if you use Outlook, you may have some frustration with syncing.
There is certainly no android phone to compare on ATT.
Thank you for the link. Looking over this site the only issues I see is with GPS on this phone. Is that about correct? Also it looks like it will get the 2.2 upgrade?

After ATT sent me my 4th or 5th phone I was doing better because it did not have the ID1 update. I kept on using firmware updates from this site to make the phone better. After the 6.5 update came out and the phone still was not right I gave up. GPS is still a issue but not like ID1. My texts and e-mail keep on crashing on it. I have not been able to update my hotmail via Live for over a week. Every time I close out of my texts it locks ups for about 20sec to a minute or two. I have finaly given up. Now my battery is only lasting about 2 days on standby. After about 1 hour long call I go though about 40% battery. I am just happy I can start doing a upgrade now.
I just hope the GPS fix comes soon for this new phone.

Yes, GPS is not fully functional at this point, but it appears that Samsung is working on correcting the problem. 2.2 is in the works, but no word yet on when it will be released for the Captivate... best estimates seem to shoot for 1-2 months from now.
The gps works well for me with the update. It just takes longer than what I was used to wth the iphone. I get a solid lock in 30 seconds.

Excuse me, *for some*, GPS is not fully functional.
For the most part the captivate is great. Just needs a little bit of tweaking here and there. Gps is pretty much b0rked at the moment. Til Samsung gives us an actual fix. Or we find one. Gps can lock somtimes but it will jump around a lot or lose the fix. Navigation wont work for the most part. Aside from that the phone captivate is a great choice.
OK so the GPS sounds about as good as my epix right now. I can not even get a GPS signal in the car unless I have it on the dash with nothing blocking it. If all it takes is 30 seconds to lock on I will be set. That is better then the Epix. What is up with Samsung and the GPS.

Nobody knows for sure. Some speculate it is hardware and won't be fixed. Most of us feel it is software. It supposedly works for some people, but those that can't get it to work are dubious that the ones that work are just not hitting the right circumstances for it to fail. It actually seems to be accurate a high percentage of the time, but when it is off, it is waaaaayyyyy off. Sometimes only for a few seconds. Very inconsistent.
Samsung has indicated it will be fixed in September. Not much time left for them on that commitment.
If they don't make it by then, there will be lots of whining and griping. I'll be doing that in my mind, but plan to refrain from doing so in the forum The GPS problem is probably the single largest issue that has caused a lot of threads, and several contentious posts.
It is a great phone. Hopefully the GPS issue will have true resolution very soon.
I switched from a moto Q. To a samsung jack, used a epix for a bit as well. Got this phone a few weeks ago and have not regretted it for a second. Android and win mobile 6.5 are not even close enough to compare.
Also swype beats out any virtual or physical keypad I have ever used.

I'd SERIOUSLY wait 2 months until the Windows Phone 7 devices are out. I was at MSFT this week and got to play with a dev model for a few minutes, it does seem pretty nice. It will all really depend on what apps are available.

My impression, personally, was that windows mobile seemed like it was as locked down as the iphone, but without all of the iphone's features and polish. In short, It seemed like the worst of both worlds. The only thing I that it has going for itself is the nice looking homescreens. That is just my initial impression though and I hope I'm wrong.
You can see my list of phones in my SIG and I know my thing when it comes to HTC and WinMo.... all those phones in that list, were me trying to find a device that ran...well.... the way my Captivate does. Even with fat thumbs I can still type on the software keyboard... I go back to my TP2 and I actually type slower. I just cant type without looking at the keyboard, one thing a software keyboard will never accomplish.
Ive been following WinMo for years, and I can tell you, this makes me never want to go back, even for WP7.

Ok I got the phone on the way home.
I am likeing it a lot all ready. I used Travel for the GPS app. That thing worked great. I hope maybe I got a good one. Before I did anything on the phone I did the software update. I came from a HTC Tilt, which had HORRIBLE GPS. I was able to get a great Froyo ROM in it and had a ton of time to play with it before I got the Captivate. The learning curve is very low for basic operation. It'll take a bit of research to get the rooting/sideloading etc down. Most everyone here is fantastic at helping out and I've gotten some excellent advice from people on how to mod my Captivate. Coming from a WinMo phone to this one, I HIGHLY doubt you'll be disappointed
Hello Everyone,
I just got the Arrive and I'm loving it, but something weird is happening. For some reason, when I'm writing a txt, it just flat out stops at 160 characters and doesn't continue the message with an auto-split.
I called into Sprint, HTC, and Windows Phone support and they all think" woah, that's weird" and the majority of tech support didn't even know it had launched already. I also read the manual from Sprint, HTC, and from Microsoft stating that 160+ characters will be auto-split.
Since the phone is so new, as well as NoDo and such, I have not seen anything about this issue and it's driving me mad. My only theory is that for some unknown reason Microsoft limited the txt messaging in CDMA WP7 to 160 because CDMA doesn't handle 160+ characters well. If this is the case, WTF?!
I know there are very few of you who have an Arrive, but anybody have this same problem? Anybody have any ideas on how to fix this?
The only workaround I have is sending the message incomplete and continuing it with another (and that makes me feel like I'm using my old Nokia with Snake. I haven't had a phone that couldn't handle more than 160 characters before)
Mine does the same thing, while it is a little annoying until it get resolved sending it parts is the only work around.
Well that's lame.
Why does it seem like Microsoft is just dropping the ball with the basics on Windows Phone 7? I love the OS to pieces and I really like the phone, but these little nuances (along with simple things like changing colors, custom ringtones, group contacts, etc) are just plain unacceptable.
Also, I noticed something about the Arrive.
The OS version is 7.0.7389.0
but the NoDo being pushed today is 7.0.7390.0
That 0.0.0001.0 Might be all the difference, at least I hope so. It means a posibility of a tiny update
I wouldn't count on any updates in the forseeable future. And FWIW the manual for the phone says that it will break up messages longer than 160 characters, so this definitely sounds like a bug.
-R
I just learned this might be unique only to the Arrive
It is, I have the arrive and buddy has focus with nodo, his splits texts fine.

It must be all Arrives, because mine does the same thing. It's very annoying when you're used to having your texts auto-split. My Touch Pro 2 split text messages just fine, so I see no reason that it should be a problem with the Arrive. Hopefully this gets fixed soon.
Sent from my T7575 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
My Arrive does the same thing. Of course, I didn't read the manual, so I wasn't aware that it was supposed to work differently (but had expected it to since even my WM5.0 Cingular 8125 did it).
And I've already heard that the .0001 isn't significant in terms of build number. CDMA vs GSM difference only.
Its an issue with Microsoft not implementing proper code for CDMA text splitting its annoying but they'll fix it.
Hi, I am an employee of Sprint. The HTC Arrive was intended to allow users to exceed 160 characters by automatically creating a new message after 160 characters is exceeded. This is explained on pg. 83 of the HTC Arrive User Guide. Currently the device will not allow users to exceed the 160 character limit. This has been recognized as a known issue and Sprint has asked Microsoft to address this issue in a future update.
Looks like it wasn't fixed in Mango. At least not for me
...
I am so tempted to ditch my Arrive right *now*. Sprint/HTC has been notified many times over about this issue. They had time to fix it. There is no excuse for this.
EDIT: Anyone know if Verizon HTC Trophy owners are having the same limit? I'm hearing *nothing* from that sector.

It wasn't. This was the single thing I was most looking forward to. If they didn't update it with Mango, I suspect it will never be fixed.
I really hope that Sprint releases a new device, as I am ready a Windows Phone variant of the Galaxy SII.
Got the update notification. Updated, and sure enough, that limit is still there.
I don't think any words can sum up how much rage I am feeling right now. I really just want to throw caution to the wind and grab a Photon 4G.
To note: If this limit was stated clearly in the manual, I wouldn't have a problem with it. It is the fact that this is a feature that is SUPPOSED TO EXIST, but does not.
I son't understand why you're all raging of such a simple thing, I rarely need to write more than 160 chars in an SMS (a 1 minute call would be cheaper for me in that case ), but yeah it's apparently an Arrive-only bug because I don't have it in my HTC 7 Pro.

Correct...last we knew it was a Sprint firmware issue as you can now type more than 160 chars but the phone won't send it. I haven't been over to BUZZ in a while but try seeing if the Buzz About Wireless people are talking about it since that's Sprint offical forum
The 7 Pro won't have an issue because it's GSM, and GSM can support it no problem.
Only the 7 Pro (US Cellular) and Arrive will have this issue.
And I regularly send messages that get close to or go over 160 characters, and rarely make phone calls. So for me, this is a pretty big deal.
EDIT: Got one person saying this isn't an issue on the CDMA Trophy:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1280146
If this is the case, it's HTC/Sprint's problem, not Microsoft's.
EDIT: Got first-hand confirmation that this is now HTC/Sprint's problem:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/anticitizen/6193110593/
That is a CDMA Trophy, doing a messaging split. I sent it to myself, and sure enough, it came through as two messages, but it did come through.
Btw, bump, just in case no one saw my edits. (Since they're a tad significant)
Yet another edit: Reached out to HTC over this. Gist of the response from them: We have no updates coming to fix any of the issues with the Arrive.
Going to give this one last bump, because seriously, this problem is really, really irritating.
I have some communication with HTC, but all I'm getting from them is "We'll notify you when we have more information!" Listen, I don't want more information. I just want to know if some kind of fix is being worked on. Or if they're going to get around to it. It's getting infuriating to wait on this.
Hi guys,
I'm thinking of buying a Samsung Omnia 7 right now as there are really cheap in Germany. But I am unsure about a few things which keeps me from buying for now, maybe you can help me? I am currently using a SE Xperia X1 (HTC Kovsky).
First off: NoDo. It's there already or will be there soon. Are any Registry tweaks possible after NoDo is up and running? I don't mind it beeing complicated, is it just possible?
Second: ChevronWP7. It's going to fade away after NoDo, no surprise. Has anyone heard of similar applications in development? Most important feature I guess is sideloading applications on WP7, are there other solutions?
I heard something of USB tethering on the Omnia7. Is that true? Are there any restritcions? Is this still working after NoDo?
What about HTC apps? Obviously the won't install after NoDo, but which of them used to work on a "unlocked" device?
Is there any way of recognizing the device as USB-storage?
Thats it for now. Any help is appreciated Thanks already!

I don't think there is a chevron-like device for after NoDo devices yet, so if not then the answer to your other questions is "no" but I don't know 100%.
I do know there is no way to mount your device as USB storage, only Zune can recognize the phone, the only exception is if you own an HD2.

oh yeah I forgot about that, I hope it's the real deal and actually works.
You don't own a WP7 device yet, but your major preoccupation seems to be unlocking it or tearing it apart. I used to apply every tweak to my phone in previous Windows Mobile.. I'm a tinkerer. With WP7 I have NO desire to go rooting and editing registry and all that. The homebrew just doesn't appeal to me. I wouldn't make this your primary hangup over buying the phone.
The answer to most of your questions is 'No'. My comment on that is 'so what?'
I think the dude above me makes a good point.
If you like to mod, theme, tether, or change anything about your phone then WP7 is not for you.

Yeah, the same way - if you really want a full power of what modern OS can give you currently, WP7 is not for you either.
It's not only about modding. It's about usage.
for day to day use, it's probably the best out of all the current smartphone OS'. However, for more advanced things, it's not there yet. How long will it take, well that is up to MS and how they go about it over the course of the year, but with 3 months pretty much gone now, it doesn't look like we will see much of it till late next year when windows phone 8 comes about.
Thanks for you'r response, guys!
One more question about registry edits: I found the registry edior by Julien Schapman and I read somewhere else that registry edits can be done by deploying a provxml. are there other solutions? Juliens tool obviously won't work after NoDo as it has to be sideloaded...
i own the omnia 7 for about 3 weeks and there were a few moments when i wanted to go back to my nokia 5800, but on the other hand when i saw its incredibly laggy UI, powered by a 330mhz CPU i realized how awesome the omnia with win7 actually is.
ofcourse there are only about 15% setting options compared to the 5800 one's, but eventually one doesnt need the most of them in the daily routine anyway.
so for my needs the omnia 7 is pretty optimal, though i'm missing proper backlight settings, pause-function with the camcorder and some other little things, but i guess not too far in the future there will be a major update.
till then i'm satisfied with whats there..

bro if you are MS you will like to plug all the holes in your OS as well....
i dont think this time MS will like ppl to play with there OS as they did with WM OS...
as right now the NoDo is pushed in batches to individual devices, its not like last time you can go to HTC website and download a ROM and wala...
my pre update update was exactly 10 days late and i dont expect any thing less from NoDo as well...
Yeah I know. Providers have their share of the timing process as well. But it's possible to unbrand the Omnia7 and have a the NoDo Update direktly without any lag.
It's starting to get really annoying and should be a priority. Does anyone know if it's in the works?.
Also I let a friend with an android phone try out my phone and the keyboard kept dissapearing on him. Needless to say, he will never buy windows phone.
I thought it was just me. I thought I was somehow touching the screen by mistake.
Now, I really want to throw this thing into a wall.
I read somewhere its to do with background tasks, everytime one in the background starts up the keyboard disappears so if its a rly big problem then try disabling all background tasks and live tiles?
Happens to me often as well.
I also get the LG logo/sleep of death often enough now.
Hmmm I don't have any of these issues :S
The latest update didn't fix it. Seems to have made it worse. I barely use that phone now. The keyboard closes out way too often resulting in misclicks and lost text that I had typed into input boxes.
I thought this was common knowledge. It even happened when typing this. wpcentral "http://forums.wpcentral.com/windows-phone-7-os-discussion/182948.htm" forums also have reports of this.
I just think and hope a fix is soon. No excuses.

I'm soooooo glad 2 know that others are also suffering from this stupid glitch, (now I know I'm not crazy anyway), I find that when it happens if I put my phone to sleep, and then wake it up, that seems 2 fix the issue; of course until it happens again 5 seconds frickin' later
I swear, sometimes I think Microsoft wants 2 lose WP7 customers, (and potential customers), and not because of the issues per say, (every phone has it's issues), but it's their total lack of giving a sh*t, dragging their asses, and not getting on a damn fix, (or @ least acknowledge there's a problem, and let people know you're working on it, $%#@%$#%@$%!!

It doesn't seem to happen on my lumia 800, it hits the dvp hard now that I've finally begun to use the on screen keyboard on it.
Wow I thought it was just me too. Figured I would tap somewhere off the keyboard. Doesnt happen that often to me. Really only when Im using the xda app.
What would fix it just about every time was tapping off the input box somewhere then retapping on the input box.
Possibly an issue with non mango apps in mango.. Cuz the xda app is one of the only apps I use that hasnt been updated since mango. I cant remember if it ever happened to me while using IE.

@reeg420 - Thanx for the work around, I was using the sleep function 2 get around this very annoying issue, but your workaround is so much faster, and less frustrating
@colossus_r - Just because you're content w/ owning a expensive device, that can't even get the simple things right, (and it's been over a year), doesn't mean I am. I don't need anger management, because I am actually a very laid back guy, but when I wanted 2 vent I vented; who cares.
I see it like this, I paid close too $700 for my phone, waited for over a year 2 get the most basic functions, (and this is from a company that is supposedly, "trying", 2 keep/gain customers), and now those basic functions are again not working, so I don't know about you, but I believe this is bull****, and if Microsoft really wanted 2 fix the issue they would.
It's not like this issue just cropped up today, and only affects 1 person, and it just so happens that the keyboard working properly, is just a little wee important. like N8ter said, this among other issues almost makes the phone a pain in the ass 2 use, so why use it @ all, and I think I'm going 2 start taking a stance like him, because this is unacceptable; period!!
**Hell, I even updated my phone just about an hour ago, but alas no fix, I guess, "the theory", of the fix being in the next update kinda fell flat on it's face**
I boxed this phone up for days and eventually whipped it back out. The keyboard issue is so frustrating... They really need to get that fixed asap.

Hello All,
I just thought I would confirm that the 7.8 update is being sent out to our devices.
I have just plugged mine in to Zune, and it immediately said that I had an update waiting.
Just for reference, I have an HTC 7 Pro, that is running the standard UK Rom.
Great to see a wide range of the original devices getting the update, thus far I have it working on my Titan and HD7 and now that I have seen this thread I can let my work colleague know it's available for his 7 Pro.
Differences?
I updated this morning, I can't see much different apart from the start menu.
It seems to be running slower too.

The change log is as follows.
Start Screen: Provides resizable Live Tiles (small, medium, large) to provide for more customization options for your Start Screen.
Accent Colors: Increases the number of available accent or theme colors to twenty.
Lock Screen: Improves the lock screen performance with accidental wipe protection and rotating wallpapers provided through the Bing image of the day.
Marketplace and Xbox: Expands Windows Phone Marketplace and Xbox support to new countries and regions.
Fonts: Enhances the Chinese font and improves the appearance of Arabic and other languages.
Microsoft also notes that the 7.8 update includes many "other improvements" to Windows Phone in the change log.
Odd, we don't seem to be getting the update at all stateside. Tried the method I used to forge Mango (update, click somewhere else, click update again, unplug network cable, wait, nothing). Sprint Forumers are saying that the update is totally shelved for US customers with this phone, because of a manufacturer decision from HTC somehow.
I'm suddenly interested in what the heck is going on now, since you folks in the UK are getting along with 7.8 just fine...gahhhhhhhh sprint

What version are you using? I come in just to see if there's any official update for Arrive. But if you can't wait, just do the force update.
Have three HTC Arrives..updated two so far using this tool
go here and download this tool:
windowsphonehacker.com/articles/want_windows_phone_7.8_now_try_this_easy_tool-01-31-13
If you are still on mango, it will take awhile. stay by the phone, will need 5 plus reboots with confirmation clicks for each reboot.

*never mind, just downloaded them all. us version seems to have all of them I think?

EDIT : never mind, just needed a reboot is all. tempeheman, thanks so much! otherwise I'd still be stuck on Mango right now xD

HTC Arrive
Has anyone been able to get the official update to download from Zune on the HTC Arrive? If so how???????
I just updated my arrive. Seemed kinda weird. 6 reboots and done. Seems snappier. I have only had it for a week but this update is nice. Has anyone else had good luck with this too?

Like we said before, the start screen looks nice, with resizeable tiles, and that's it, some icon changes maybe, but no real improvement underline. It's nice to get an update, but not too much with no real fixes for the problems we are facing. Actually, it should be quite easy for many of those "problems" to be fixed.

Stupid Sprint!!!! Making us all jump through hoops to get an update to our phone when they could probably easily turn it on. UGHHHHHHH!!!!!!
