[Q] Asking the WP7 community - some questions - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I'm thinking of buying a Samsung Omnia 7 right now as there are really cheap in Germany. But I am unsure about a few things which keeps me from buying for now, maybe you can help me? I am currently using a SE Xperia X1 (HTC Kovsky).
First off: NoDo. It's there already or will be there soon. Are any Registry tweaks possible after NoDo is up and running? I don't mind it beeing complicated, is it just possible?
Second: ChevronWP7. It's going to fade away after NoDo, no surprise. Has anyone heard of similar applications in development? Most important feature I guess is sideloading applications on WP7, are there other solutions?
I heard something of USB tethering on the Omnia7. Is that true? Are there any restritcions? Is this still working after NoDo?
What about HTC apps? Obviously the won't install after NoDo, but which of them used to work on a "unlocked" device?
Is there any way of recognizing the device as USB-storage?
Thats it for now. Any help is appreciated Thanks already!

I don't think there is a chevron-like device for after NoDo devices yet, so if not then the answer to your other questions is "no" but I don't know 100%.
I do know there is no way to mount your device as USB storage, only Zune can recognize the phone, the only exception is if you own an HD2.

I believe this will resolve all of his issues though it's still just in beta
http://touchxperience.com/

oh yeah I forgot about that, I hope it's the real deal and actually works.

You don't own a WP7 device yet, but your major preoccupation seems to be unlocking it or tearing it apart. I used to apply every tweak to my phone in previous Windows Mobile.. I'm a tinkerer. With WP7 I have NO desire to go rooting and editing registry and all that. The homebrew just doesn't appeal to me. I wouldn't make this your primary hangup over buying the phone.
The answer to most of your questions is 'No'. My comment on that is 'so what?'

I think the dude above me makes a good point.
If you like to mod, theme, tether, or change anything about your phone then WP7 is not for you.

Yeah, the same way - if you really want a full power of what modern OS can give you currently, WP7 is not for you either.
It's not only about modding. It's about usage.

for day to day use, it's probably the best out of all the current smartphone OS'. However, for more advanced things, it's not there yet. How long will it take, well that is up to MS and how they go about it over the course of the year, but with 3 months pretty much gone now, it doesn't look like we will see much of it till late next year when windows phone 8 comes about.

Thanks for you'r response, guys!
One more question about registry edits: I found the registry edior by Julien Schapman and I read somewhere else that registry edits can be done by deploying a provxml. are there other solutions? Juliens tool obviously won't work after NoDo as it has to be sideloaded...

i own the omnia 7 for about 3 weeks and there were a few moments when i wanted to go back to my nokia 5800, but on the other hand when i saw its incredibly laggy UI, powered by a 330mhz CPU i realized how awesome the omnia with win7 actually is.
ofcourse there are only about 15% setting options compared to the 5800 one's, but eventually one doesnt need the most of them in the daily routine anyway.
so for my needs the omnia 7 is pretty optimal, though i'm missing proper backlight settings, pause-function with the camcorder and some other little things, but i guess not too far in the future there will be a major update.
till then i'm satisfied with whats there..

bro if you are MS you will like to plug all the holes in your OS as well....
i dont think this time MS will like ppl to play with there OS as they did with WM OS...
as right now the NoDo is pushed in batches to individual devices, its not like last time you can go to HTC website and download a ROM and wala...
my pre update update was exactly 10 days late and i dont expect any thing less from NoDo as well...

Yeah I know. Providers have their share of the timing process as well. But it's possible to unbrand the Omnia7 and have a the NoDo Update direktly without any lag.

[Q] Upgraded to Mango - Can't revert now?

So I received my Arrive in the mail today and played around for a little while and decided to take the plunge and load Mango.
Since this has been loaded I've run into nothing but problems. The Zune software won't properly recognize the phone so I can't sync music/apps to it, and whenever I plug in my phone to the computer it tells me I need to update the Zune software, but then goes on to say it's up to date. I can't actually interact with my Arrive through the Zune software.
I've tried downloading the Sprint RUU files and booting into recovery and running the RUU, but it never finds my phone. I've tried this on an XP machine and Win7 machine, getting the same results on both.
Are there any other ways to revert to NoDo? I'm running into nothing but dead ends here and I have no idea how to get back to factory. I realize that people need to buck up when they goof something up, I just thought I was very careful in making sure I was reading through the instructions at least twice and then taking the step.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully I didn't just turn this new phone into an expensive paperweight.
Whilst I haven't tried Mango myself, I would imagine most people would suggest going back to a previous backup if one was made. Microsoft have instructions here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/basics/restore-a-backup-to-my-phone.aspx
I have no idea if this will work in your situation, frankly, but if you are desperate it might be worth a try at your own risk - perhaps someone can clarify if this is the right thing to do?

I ended up having some issues with my OS that was causing the problem. After a fresh reload this morning I was able to run the restore.bat and properly get my phone back to NoDo.
I'm thinking I might give this another try now that I know I can restore without any issues. I was beginning to think I'd really borked myself, though at 2am you start to think "end of the world" type thoughts with your device.
On a side note - I'm absolutely loving WP7 so far, though it's hard going from my EVO to this. The screen is SO much smaller and the device is noticeably fatter and colors of the LCD are a bit lacking in direct comparison. I think most of it's just going to be getting used to the phone and leaving my EVO at home when I'm running around.
Thank you all for the support. I always forget why I love XDA so much!
u needed to update the Zune client to the latest beta as well after installing mango. that's why u weren't being detected. and the reason the colors look better on the evo than the arrive is because the evo is 32 bit color while the arrive is 16bit color in NoDo. mango fixes that and brings the colors to 32 bit

Interesting. I'll have to take a look at this a little later this evening when I get home from work. I wasn't aware of the color difference. I reloaded Mango after getting the beta Zune client and have my backup ready to go.
Feeling better about WP7 for sure now.

[Q] I'm tired, I want Mango on my HD7S

There's a rumor floating around that the Mango update has been released on the HD7S.....apparently though its not true.
How can I just get Mango now?
I've heard those running 7712 can upgrade to official Mango now.
Is there anyway to do this now?
My phone is developer unlocked. I've got a student app hub account, but I don't think I can get the betas?
Thanks in advance (from me and all those who are desperate for Mango)
Which version of OS are you running?
There is a method to force the update on your phone, not sure it would work with you or you have tried it, but here goes anyway. (I used on my HD7 two weeks ago)
Plug your phone and sync it with Zune.
From Settings -> Phone -> Update.
It will check if there is an official update for you, if it shows an update then cheers!
If not:
1- Click Linking button above Update.
2- Click Update button again, and quickly disable your Network adapter (Or unplug the wire)
If it shows an update for you then Hurray! But in case it doesn't show try to repeat the previous steps, but with changing the timing of disabling your Internet connection.
Sometimes it happened from first try, one it took me ~15 times :|
After it shows an update is there for you, re-enable your Internet connection and click update.
Hope this helps in your case, don't know anyone with HD7S to ask him if he tried this method.
I know about the force-update method. Thanks for trying to help.
The issue is, the update for the HD7S isn't delivering, and the force-update only works when the update is already on the servers.
From what I know, only those with 7712 (Mango Beta 2) or RTM can update to the official Mango (7720). But I'm not sure how I would get a hold of Beta 2 or RTM.
Oh and I'm running 7390
There is a guide somewhere in the forums to get Mango Beta 2, there is also another method which forces Mango ISV.
Hmm if you can sideload apps try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287505
Try looking these threads.
But honestly I think you should wait a bit longer if you don't want to mess around with your phone, I believe the update for HD7S should be somewhere around the corner.
Thanks! I'm going to check it out tonight and see if that works. Maybe the official is out.
How do you like w7 so far?
Don't other with the update procedure above. Just read this easy way to get the update: http://windowsphonehacker.com/articles/how_to_get_mango_beta_2_for_nondevelopers-07-31-11
This takes you to Mango beta 2 which can be update via Zune Software to Mango RTM.

I really like WP7, for me I really like the usability of the phone and the experience of using it.
My only issue with it is that it doesn't support Arabic (but got used to that since the day of WM6.0)
My friends here call me a Microsoft fanboy because I like my WP7

Yes this was the first procedure I talked about, didn't remember the topic name though
True, I remember when the iPhone didn't support arabic...it was a huge deal.
I'm guessing you're arab? I can read and write arabic, but I'm no arab. Maybe you can tell from my username here.
Anyways, I guess that trick used to work, but I don't think it works with the new Zune software. No one commenting recently has gotten it to work...
I guess I'll wait it out....but that new iPhone/iOS 5 looks too good

You guessed right, I am Arabian.
Khaliq, this is Arabic meaning creator?
I am happy currently with my phone, and iOS5+iPhone 4S doesn't seem that much big of a thing. I think I will wait for iPhone 5 to see how good it is
Sorry can't be of help, hopefully the update will appear soon.

Microsoft has now released Mango for the HTC HD7S: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/features/update-schedule-usa.aspx
Force update worked flawless for me. I did update using my laptop and all you have to do is flip the wireless switch when you click on the "Update" link in Zune.

7.8 update official

Hello All,
I just thought I would confirm that the 7.8 update is being sent out to our devices.
I have just plugged mine in to Zune, and it immediately said that I had an update waiting.
Just for reference, I have an HTC 7 Pro, that is running the standard UK Rom.
Great to see a wide range of the original devices getting the update, thus far I have it working on my Titan and HD7 and now that I have seen this thread I can let my work colleague know it's available for his 7 Pro.
Differences?
I updated this morning, I can't see much different apart from the start menu.
It seems to be running slower too.

The change log is as follows.
Start Screen: Provides resizable Live Tiles (small, medium, large) to provide for more customization options for your Start Screen.
Accent Colors: Increases the number of available accent or theme colors to twenty.
Lock Screen: Improves the lock screen performance with accidental wipe protection and rotating wallpapers provided through the Bing image of the day.
Marketplace and Xbox: Expands Windows Phone Marketplace and Xbox support to new countries and regions.
Fonts: Enhances the Chinese font and improves the appearance of Arabic and other languages.
Microsoft also notes that the 7.8 update includes many "other improvements" to Windows Phone in the change log.
Odd, we don't seem to be getting the update at all stateside. Tried the method I used to forge Mango (update, click somewhere else, click update again, unplug network cable, wait, nothing). Sprint Forumers are saying that the update is totally shelved for US customers with this phone, because of a manufacturer decision from HTC somehow.
I'm suddenly interested in what the heck is going on now, since you folks in the UK are getting along with 7.8 just fine...gahhhhhhhh sprint

What version are you using? I come in just to see if there's any official update for Arrive. But if you can't wait, just do the force update.
Have three HTC Arrives..updated two so far using this tool
go here and download this tool:

If you are still on mango, it will take awhile. stay by the phone, will need 5 plus reboots with confirmation clicks for each reboot.

Like we said before, the start screen looks nice, with resizeable tiles, and that's it, some icon changes maybe, but no real improvement underline. It's nice to get an update, but not too much with no real fixes for the problems we are facing. Actually, it should be quite easy for many of those "problems" to be fixed.

[Q] Getting a samsung focus. How I do I get started with ROM'ing and homebrew?

Hi, a friend of mine upgraded his phone today (Samsung Focus) and got a Lumia 920. I've never used windows phone before and have always been an android user, but I'm getting frustrated to say the least with it, and there are alot of features on android that I simply don't need, and I need a smooth and stable new OS to tinker with. So my friend recommended I atleast give WP7 a try and I'm buying it from him tommorow. I'm extremely excited to try out this beautiful OS, and being the tinkering kind of person, I want to start messing with it as soon as I get my hands on it.
My question is, how do I get started? The phone is already on 7.8 and jailbroken, atleast according to my friend. I want to know what are the advantages of a ROM on windows phone, how do I install the ROM, how do I recover from any mishaps (bricks, etc.) and the sort.
Also, I eventually wanted to test out homebrew and all, but maybe it's just me, but WP7 doesn't seem to be very Mac friendly (and my only computer, a macbook can't upgrade to 10.7, which Zune is available for...). So anyway to install home-brew without the use of a computer?
Thanks for the help, guys! I can't wait!
For the homebrew thing, you could just dualboot windows and OS X? Than you can just use windows for windows phone. As for the other thing I don't think there are roms for the focus (it's a us version of the international omnia w right?)

It's the at&t one, unlocked, jailbroken and on 7.8...
So all the roms in the development section of the Focus are for the Omnia W??
as for dual booting, I guess I could, but I'd rather keep that as a last resort. Do I have no other option?
Don't know anything about macs so I don't know, just threw it out there as an option. And the focus has it's own section? Didn't know that, guess they should work then.

How do I go about flashing it...on a mac? Or do I need a windows? If so, how do I flash on windows?
Also, for the apps, I guess this Xap Handler program seems to do the trick without requiring a computer, how do I get that on my phone?
I'm sorry you'll have to wait for someone else for that. The only windows phone device that I have is the omnia W which doesn't have any custom roms as far as I know of (and I haven't felt the need either since 7.8 stock is good enough for me)
By the way on Linux my omnia W is recognized as any other USB device so I can just drag and drop files there. On windows you are forced to use zune. Maybe it works the same on mac as on Linux? Than that problem would be solved I guess.

Don't quote me on this but the only way I think you can fully brick a phone is by installing the wrong rev version rom..
Install CleanRom 3.10a here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528984
If you have a Rom installed which supports apps to be installed from inside the browser you should be able to install apps without a PC.
I have to say Im 17 and I have bricked my phone atleast 3 times by messing with the registry and I UNBRICKED IT EVERYTIME AND IS STILL FULLY FUNCTIONAL up to this day. All you have to do is backup and reflash the ROM if the phone is bricked. THERE ARE 2 VERSIONS OF SAMSUNG FOCUS.. 1.3 AND 1.4 . FLASHING THE ROM FOR THE WRONG VERSION WILL CAUSE A PERMANENT BRICK FOR WHICH IT CANT BE RECOVERED..
Some Tips:
1. Before reflashing always have atleast 60% battery
2. Check your version of focus under the battery

Best W10M version to use with 1020?

Hello, new here. Sorry if this question does not warrant its own thread.
As the WP 8 store will apparently be closing down this coming summer i figured i should get my 1020 to W10M to keep it operational for a while longer(the idea of having to reset the phone after the store closes and not being able to update any of the apps scares the heck out of me).
I know that issues such as the brightness and bluetooth can be fixed via editing the phones registry but things like excessive battery drain worry me, to put it shortly in order to keep the phone as issue free as possible should i go for 1511, 1607, 1703 or 1709?
If anyone has used these devices under the various W10M builds and could give some advice that would be really neat.
Hi, I've been using this phone for over 3 years now and I've tried every W10M that has come out and I can assure you that the best version for our humble 1020's is the W10M anniversary edition (1607), it doesn't have the bluetooth problem, battery doesn't drain fast, overall it's a very stable version. The only issue is screen brightness and the ussual glance screen which can be fixed, but I never use it so it's no big deal for me.
Hi, and what about the camera?
Can you use the 41Mpixel camera with Windows 10 properly? I.e. will you be able to take photos in DNG?
I've had my Nokia 1020 for 5 years, and was running Windows 8.1 until recently when I searched for how to upgrade to Windows 10.
After much searching, I have successfully upgrade to the current 1709, build 10.0.15254.556
I loved the phone but was disappointed at the apps and support disappearing.
Windows 10 has given it a new lease of life, and with a new battery installed, I can get 2 days between charges.
Long live the 1020.

when did you updated it? I mean recently in 2019 or before?
I did it in March 2019.
My 1020 was great, but battery life poor, and apps practically non existent.
I didn't want to buy a new phone, so bought a new battery and plunged into the deep end and looked to install Windows 10.
After a few weeks searching for a method, I finally did it. It took a few hours over two evenings to complete.
I haven't looked back. Lots of favourite apps. The phone is stable. I have my 41mp Lumia camera.

Do you mind pointing me in the direction of a guide or resources you used to upgrade your phone to that stable version? I looked at Neoloko's guides but all of the links to the ROM are dead there..
I have a new one coming in the mail in the coming week and want to be ready to upgrade it.

I used this guide to update my 1020 to 1607.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/wi...le/installing-windows-10-mobile-tech-t3431454
And from 1607 used this method to get to 1709. Although i went back to 1607 since the battery life was just horrendous on 1709.

Thank you for the info! I followed the guide but have hit a roadblock, I'm thinking its because Windows Insider's servers are now down. It just won't let me connect and select a ring or anything.
So I made it all the way through and can't actually update my phone. Honestly the only reason I want to is so I can run a specific W10 instagram app (since I need to be able to run it for my work's sake) and none of the W8 apps seem to work anymore.
I also didn't take down the details for the Lumia 1020, I didn't think about it and it wasnt mentioned in the guide... so my device's registry is stuck on Lumia 930 lol.
I looked around and found some offline windows 10 updates that *might* work but I'm scared because a lot of people report the 1020 performance being really bad on W10 and I'm thinking the version you're on is the best one but I don't know how I can get that exact version installed....

Just use the W10 update app from the store instead of the insider.
The Lumia 930 registry will update it directly to 1607 and then just do a factory reset and your phone will revert its registry back to its original values.
Once you have done all that install Interop tools like adviced in the latter link and you can fix the bugs with MSN weather app and adjustable brightness.

Thank you for all the info!
So I ended up using the program found at wpvision.de to update, and it's going great. I should've asked prior, but currently my phone is updating to the very last version of 1607 (14393.2551). I hope that one is okay?
It's in the process of installing that update, but wow does the Phone Updater program the admin released works very well.
Is that version that I'm installing okay? Or should I try and rollback to a different version?

My curiosity is killing me. Were you able to get Microsoft Weather or Sports on 1607? I tried all sorts of gimmicks but I could not get them to work. So I upgraded to 1703.
I actually have two "new" 1020's, one with 1703 and the other with 1709. I haven't noticed a big difference between the two except I hate the way 1709 saves photos. My 1703 phone uses the same folders (Camera Roll, Saved pictures, screenshots, etc) as 1607 and Win 8.1, and I can access my photos by just plugging into a PC. But 1709 has weird folders, and I can't find my pix. I have to send them to Onedrive and download from there.
One thing - I use Shazam a lot with my Win 8.1 phone, and I still do at home on WiFi. Also, 8.1 has an awesome ROKU remote. Kiss both of those goodbye with Win 10. Win 10's song identify apps are either Soundhound or Cortana, neither of which is even remotely as accurate as Shazam.
Bluetooth was restored by setting my Registry keys back to Lumia 1020. When it was set to Lumia 640XL or 950, the Bluetooth only worked with my laptops and our newe HP printer, but none of the cars. That was a deal-breaker until I got it sorted.
