NOTE:
So far this has been the only sure fire method I've found to 100% get around any brick situation regardless of firmware, etc. This only works for the captivate, not any other galaxy s variant.
Situations: phone-!-Computer / no download mode
Black Screen / RST_STATUS 0x0
Procedure:
1. Remove the battery, external SD card and SIM card.
2. Wait 10 seconds.
3. Open odin3
4. Connect usb cable.
5. Hold volume up + volume down + Power.
6. Insert battery.
7. Release POWER BUTTON ONLY.
You should now be in immediate download mode.
Please forgive me if this is duplicate some where, but I tried every procedure I could find on google to no avail, then accidentally found this method just before I was going to box it back up and see if my buddy at AT&T would make me eat it or not.
My situation was: Launched Odin3 to flash H3 firmware, died twice in the middle, and on the third time locked up half ways just at the beginning of factoryfs.rfs -- Then the phone did nothing. Blackscreen is all. Interestingly enough, while in the state if you hold volume up + power, it will give a hw diagnostic screen. Beyond that I could get no where. Just a black screen, no acknowledgement when connected to PC, no charging indicator, nothing.
If this is a dupe Im sorry but this method I could not find and hope to make it readily available to people who may think their phones bricked.
Update 12/22/2010:
How to BRICK the phone / WARNING!!!
If for whatever reason you decide to use Odin to flash a stock GTI9000 ROM and manually add the kernels and modems using a "pure" 2.2.1 sammy rom. BEWARE.
Researching a lot, it seems the consensus is that the sbl in the 2.2.1 versions of the GTI9000 has *hard* download mode crippled.. Meaning if there is a software screw up YOU CANNOT USE A USB JIG OR ANY OTHER METHOD OF GETTING THE PHONE IN DOWNLOAD MODE!!! To fix it you'll need a new one or JTAG to replace the bootloader.
As far as I can tell, beyond getting completely rid of the AT&T logo, there is no need to flash boot/sbl to get the "purity" of the 2.2.1 sammy roms.
Extract all files from the tar EXCEPT boot/sbl and re-tar and flash just those to avoid overwriting the stock captivate boot loader.
Also, it does not appear the boot/sbl from the captivate 2.2 leak suffers this same problem.
For any one iffy on bricking their phones, stay away from roms that remove COMPLETELY the AT&T logo on boot. This generally means the boot loader has been messed with any you may be screwed if you soft brick the phone. Most CWM roms dont overwrite the boot/sbl, but some can and do. Watch yourself.. if it the AT&T logo goes away COMPLETELY, I recommend flashing JF6 with One click while the roms alive using adb reboot download and try another rom.
thanks!
worked...took a few tries but some trick with this captivate to get it into download mode.. i was totally bricked too, diag screen with PC/Phone icons and exclamation mark. for me 1.) plug usb, 2.) hold power and vol up/down and connect battery (it fell out) and i was in download mode
I guess a similar procedure was on the odin3 one click thread, but there is something different in your procedure, it's not my case but it would be nice if some people confirms this as this may be useful and if it really works it should be included in odin thread
What worked for me was: Pull the battery, sim and micro sd card. Open odin on the PC. Insert the battery. Hold vol up and down then with the buttons held connect the usb cable. Just remember to plug in the usb cable with the vol up and down held in and odin must be open on the computer.
I also ran into the vol up plus power red text screen. Interesting to note that one of the fields will change depending if the usb cable is connected or not.
mine is dead
mi samsung captivate was working great but, suddenly it go black and only the touch bottom have light, when i plug it in the a/c it show is charging. i'm mac user and a read that i ned to use odin3 but it not work on mac. how i can unbrick the phone???
is rooted with one click lag
the dbdata was modif to

HEEEEELLLLLPPPPPP
Odin will not open on the mac?
Cant you use a virtual machine and use Odin on a Mac that way?
Or else take the odin 3 single click for JF6 and use on a friends Windows Computer.
Please help - unable to flash back with Odin3
I have pretty much tried it all at this point and am trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I followed the directions just in case get to the big yellow triangle with the droid shoveling and the screen stays at "downloading, do not turn off target..."
Of course I had Odin3 open already but its not seeing my phone, USB drives are installed am using Odin3 ver. 1.30.
Any help would be appreciated, TIA!

Best way to get download mode is use adb and type adb reboot download.
Or follow the volume up/down held with odin open on the computer, then you plug in the usb cable to the computer.

Just sharing the info! Makes you think twice about trying something else don't it?
does not seem to work because as soon as my battery touches the contacts it goes to the diag screen. do I have to release the power button in super human speed times there?
looked at all threads here, looked elsewhere -- there are some that are not fixable. Wanted to add that in case others come here and think that they might be the only ones that can't get it to work.
Ended up sending mine off to Samsung to reset today. :/
I love you! I called AT&T to send me documentation to sign and it was going to cost me 125 dollars to get it replaced even with warranty. And you fixed it !
i have tried just about every single method detailed in these forums, and nothing works.
Trying what OP suggested just sends me to the battery charging animation screen.
Anybody have any ideas ?
file analysis
I keep can get to the download screen and I hit start and it does the same thing everytime it just does File analysis i cant figure what i am doing wrong here somebody please help me

Thank you for sharing your experience.
I don't have a Captivate yet but am doing research on it and hopeful of getting one. I am confused about one thing.
Every where that I have read about how to enter Recovery mode or Download mode on the Captivate using the 3 button method, it says holding down both Volume UP + Volume Down (plus Power button) will enter Recovery mode. But you say it enters Download mode which is confusing to me. As I recall, to enter Download mode you must press the Vol Down only (plus Power button). Could it be because the phone won't go into Recovery mode, it goes into Download mode instead? Am I missing something?
Thank you!
Download mode is for updating the phone's firmware.
Remove battery, plug in the usb cable to the phone, open ODIN on the computer (need usb drivers installed before hand) on the phone hold volume up and down then plug the phone into the computer. Your phone will say DOWNLOADING. This method works even if you run into problems and the phone refuses to boot properly.
Recovery mode is for installing Update.zip. The method is tricky but involves holding volume up/down and power, the phone will show ATT then go black. It will repeat that but after the second time it goes black let go of power.
If that doesnt work, android debug tools ADB reboot recovery will work even better.
Or root the phone and use Clockwork Rom manager to boot into recovery, just press the menu item.

Thank you askpcguy! I understand the difference between Download and Recovery modes.
So the procedural difference here is having the battery in + Power button, versus battery not in (use USB cable instead) and no Power button. Can the phone get power from the PC via the USB cable? This seems to differ from what the original poster said about download mode. Perhaps OP could edit his original post for clarification? Or am I still missing something? Thanks to all
The phone does get power from the USB cable.
The difference is one procedure uses the USB cable (download mode) and the other does not (Recovery mode).
The volume up+down method does not use the power button, the phone is powered on into download mode once you plug in the USB cable.
We say pull the battery to get the phone powered off. If a firmware flash stalled or doesn't complete, pull the battery and try again!
I now understand the precedural difference.
Thank you askpcguy!

If I'm not mistaken, the phone -!- PC screen is the equivalent of download mode. I'd unplug your phone, restart Odin, plug phone back in and go from there. I'll defer if someone has a more detailed explanation though

leave the power button alone
power down
hold in volume buttons
insert USB
If you managed to get the GB bootloaders in place (assuming I9000), the download mode key combo is to hold Vol- and Power. If you're still on Eclair/Froyo bootloaders, hold Vol-/Vol+ (with power off), then insert the USB cable.

Reboot your computer
What OS are you running?
Let's run down a quick checklist of things to make sure that you're putting yourself in the best possible place for success:
1. Unplug any cables you have plugged in right now, Turn off ODIN, remove the battery, and reboot your computer.
2. Boot up your computer, let it fully boot and settle. Once it's fully settled, double-check to make sure you have the Samsung USB drivers installed for the Captivate (and that's its for the correct version of Windows - x86 or x64).
3. Assuming the drivers are present and correct, start up ODIN (You might try the One-Click to Stock, as it will take you back to a stock state). Let it sit for right now.
4. Plug your USB cable into a port that connects directly to the motherboard (but not to your phone just yet). On a desktop, it will be on the back of the machine. On a laptop, you may have to find it by trial and error.
5. Reinsert the battery. Hold Vol+/Vol-, and then insert your USB cable. This should put you in download mode. If not, pull the cable, remove the battery, reinsert the battery, and hold Vol- and power until download mode appears, then insert the USB cable.
6. Assuming you are in download mode, and the cable is inserted, check to see if ODIN recognized the phone. If not, try a different USB port on the computer. You may have to reboot your computer between trials.
7. If ODIN still won't recognize the phone, you may need to look into using Heimdall to flash.
Post back if you have questions.
I have to get a USB jig to get to download mode and special thanks to kangi26 for alll his help. And ty jmtheiss for the last post

I thought I remember seeing somewhere a ways back that from this alternate d/l screen Odin may not recognize the phone, but that flashing Odin package would work anyway.
Pretty sure I saw that...but at this point, can't hurt to try. Otherwise jig should get you there.

Ok. I bought this Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 from a friend for cheap because I thought I could fix it, but I'm running out of options. It's in a boot loop, but an abnormal boot loop. If it's unplugged, It will do the splash screen (Samsung) boot loop. If it's plugged in, either into the wall or into my computer via usb, it will do a battery (charging) boot loop. It's kinda weird. I used to have an Epic 4G and it happened damn near all the time, without the battery loop, but it would charge normally.
I haven't successfully gotten it to boot into Download mode.
If any of you have come across this issue, please feel free to help me out.
I also attached a picture of me attempting to put it in download mode. It reboots if I hit either VOL up or VOL down.
Thanks

Can you get into recovery? Also, have you tried unplugging the charging cable and getting into download mode with the cable unplugged?
I'm not sure how to get into recovery. With it unplugged, all I have to do hold the VOL Down physical button and ti will take me to a "are you sure you want to put the device into download mode screen". I apologize. I'm not to familiar with this device.
Edit: After I get to the screen where it asks me if i want to go into download mode, it reboots within 5-10 seconds, no matter which button I press

Hold power and Volume up (volume button closest to the power button) until the tab shuts off and reboots itself and then you can let go of both buttons. If it works, try doing a factory reset. Was this tablet rooted (or have a custom rom installed) in the past?

No, his device is fine.
If your device bricked, but still showing Gtab2 logo on it, it's still fine. You need to flash to stock 4.03 rom via ODIN. (Not clockworkmod)
Warranty won't work if you have flashed custom ROM before.

He needs to be able to get into Download Mode to use Odin. He stated that he can't. When he tried to continue into download mode by pressing volume up (vol. button closes to power button) the tablet reboots. It needs warranty service.
Experiments:
Power off the tab completely and charge completely and press power +volume up for 10 seconds then release, also try to power off and press power+ volume down for 10 seconds then release do you see any screens
If it says do you want to enter download mode or so press volume up and see if you could see (downloading) try also the same with volume down instead of up
Try to connect to computer do you see any messages indicating connections
Also try to connect to kies and try restore or recover firmware from options of kies
You said it reboots after 5 to 10 seconds so try to open odin and try to go to download mode and when you press volume up try as quickly as possible to connect tab to pc while odin is open

There's other method by using OpenRecovery (OR), by putting OR on external SdCard,
but it seems the OR for Gtab2 is not developed yet -__-
So, been running CM10 for a long time on tab. Decided to go back to stock, and downloaded the JB stock rom. Flashed via ODIN. Everything seemed to go OK, except that after the flash the screen went black for ages, and didn't reboot. So I hard powered it off. Probably what did it, but it wasn't going anywhere for about 15 minutes, so figured it was the next step.
Now, I get the battery charging icon. The system goes through the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 white logo, the swirling then glowing Samsung logo, and then loops through that forever.
It wouldn't be such a problem if I could back into ODIN and do another flash, but I can't get into download mode (normally I do it via adb but that isn't working since there is no USB connection at all). Tried all combinations, power/up, power/down etc. It just boot loops as above. I'm pretty sure I bricked it, but just wanted some confirmation.
Been doing this on and off for a long time, and it's the first time I've ever got stuck like this.
Thanks in advance.
Plug USB charger, your device will boot into charge mode. From charge mode you can boot into recovery by keep holding VOLUME UP button and than press POWER button. Clear data and cache in recovery, reboot.

Thanks, but I tried all combinations of Power/Volume UP and Power/Volume DOWN, it just goes through a normal boot cycle until it starts looping.
I guess it's possible I'm not using the right timing. I'm assuming that you hold Volume UP or DOWN and then press and hold Power until the screen goes black, and then release? I've done it like that many times, and also continued to hold everything down as the logo appears, and then system goes back to the battery charging icon as if it powers off again. I sound like such a noob when I type stuff like that!
I saw ODIN successfully write system.img, boot.img, and recovery.img, so I'm thinking any CWM recovery I had on there is toast.

P.S. Welcome to the forum!
it sounds strange. never heard of such a strange boot problem. anyway it could be that while transferring boot.img it became damaged due to some error. i know you probably tryed but you may try and connect it to linux or mac os x in order to check if you could retrive more data about the tab. for example the mac could find if it is totally corrupted. normally when i plug my samsung devices it ask me to add the samsung-modem also if they are turned off. meybe if it happens the same to you you can try to adb fastboot it also if i doubt myself about it working, but give it a shot
i hope my bad english is not preventing you to understand what i'm saying!
give us new feedback!
I can't get past the Samsung logo. I cannot boot into recovery or download. What can I do? I've searched and read an no go with any of those solutions.
does it actually boot to android or gets stuck at logo
does it stay at logo forever or reboots after about 10secs, if reboots then its a stuck power button
Stuck at logo, no reboots. It doesn't come on when battery is taken out and put back in, so not stuck button.
if it boots u should be able to get into download/odin mode, how r u trying to get it into dl mode as i think ur doing it wrong, keep trying or maybe buy a usb jig as ive read that it will get it into dl mode but i havent tested that out

How to enter Download Mode on Galaxy S2 Skyrocket:
First of all, know that you will not use the Power button at all.
Connect your USB cable to the computer, but not to the device.
Now, pull off the battery from your device, and then place it back.
Press simultaneously the Volume Up + Volume Down buttons. With the buttons still pressed, connect the device to the USB cable.
The phone should turn on now, and a screen with a yellow triangle and a warning should appear on the screen.
Let go of the Volume Keys and press Volume Up once to enter Download Mode.
Nothing works, up, down, both same time, nothing. This started when I used Flashify to flash newest twrp .img. I think it's hosed.
recovery flashing should not interfere w/dl mode unless you flashed it for a different device which would of hard bricked it which yours is just a soft brick.
i dont think i ever seen a soft bricked i727 not being able to recover.
go through the ts for odin in my stickies
does pc see anything connected when phone is plugged in and booting
i would hazard a guess at a bad cable, usb port on phone or pc.
try just the volume down button b4 connecting cable, thats a rogers phone technique but you never know it might work if u have not tried it.
if all else fails a cheap usb jig might help
I've had USB cables in the past that transfer power perfectly well, but don't work to transfer data at all. Before considering your phone borked, I'd try a different cable, maybe a different port on your computer as well. I've taken Skyrockets right to death's door before, but even after frying them to one stop short of Hard-bricksville, Odin was always able to read them.
