[Q] HTC...unlock? - General Questions and Answers

Hi guys. Another question on HTC phones. Please bear with me since I am still newbie in Android stuff.
I read so many times that HTC has it bootloader (or some sort) locked which makes customization harder etc etc.
Is there any news that Sensation is going to be locked? I read here and there and yet to find a right answer. Just hope to get an answer
Thanks!

Are you talking about the phone being NAND locked? If so, then more than likely it will be NAND locked. It's just the way the manufacturers attempt to keep people from mucking around with the OS on the phone.
Still, someone will find a way around it. I haven't heard of the Sensation until I read this thread, so if it's a relatively new device there's a chance there isn't much information out there on rooting and NAND unlocking the phone until others get their hands on it.

[Q] A little helpplease HTC Tattoo

ok, let me first get this out of the way... I dont care if this is breaking the rules and has been asked before, i am not willing to spend the rest of my life searching through vast amounts of text on this site to maybe, just maybe, find that someone once before asked what im asking, this is a forum, questions are suposed to be asked here.
Irritated rant after spending hours looking and not finding over.
So simply my question is, is there a definitive guide to, i dont know what were calling it, its not jail breaking, thats for iphones, and its not updating, because its not the proper software, anyway whatever we're calling it, im looking for a definitive guide to upgradating?? the HTC Tattoo to 2.2, (Froyo).
now i know it can be done, ive seen lots of people say they have done it.
Ive found the guides on general dicussion.
But is every HTC android phone the same to upgradate? The guide isnt specific to any phone, just says "android"
Any help or pointing of in the right direction is much appreciated
or could someone tell me if this is any good please.
http://thegadgets.net/trickt-boy/how-to/how-to-run-android-2-2-froyo-on-htc-tattoo//
i ask because im currently lookin at this guide...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872128
...and they're very different from each other!
Come on, someone answer. There not differcult questions.
Bloody typical mind, I dont think any of these mods sites be it iphone, xbox360, or this are very newbie friendly. in my experience of firmware mods etc ive found your supposed to know everything immediatly and the only people that get help are those who have an idea to start with.
So please, one of the 58 or so next to look at this thread, please leave some answers... or just point me in the right direction, im very capable.
What you're looking to do is root your phone & then install a custom rom that has 2.2 firmware.
There are multiple methods to root, not sure about your model of phone. But try searching about rooting, there are plenty of guides. It's something you need to read up on before you do it or else you'll end up bricking your phone.
After you've looked it over, if you still need some help send me a pm.

Thanks for your reply, exactly what i was looking for.
Spend hours yesterday reading, reading and more reading about what to do, but with different methodes out there i wanted someone to explain just what i would be trying to do (rooting aparently).
Thanks very much.
It's HTC Tattoo btw.

likelihood of getting bricked?

Hi, sorry if this a completely noobish question but im really new to this site and anything to do with rooting so bear with me
Basically I want to upgrade to the sense 3.0 through rooting because the network im on (three) are taking the absolute piss with updating it over the air.
I'm just going through the process of turning my phone S-off and i'm about to root it. i was just wondering how often bricking occurs. I not really fussed about overclocking my cpu of my phone. so basically i was just wondering if there was any possibility my phone could get bricked just from updating to sense 3.0 with the ruu. Again sorry if this question is ridiculous but i really have no idea!
Thanks in advance!!

The question kind of takes care of the answer, buddy...
The probability of your phone getting bricked is inversely proportional to the time you spend reading the threads on Guides, FAQs on this site.
Other than that mathematical certainty, there are no published statistics on actual percentage of people who brick their phones while playing around. Doesn't happen to so many, despite them flashing ROMs and MODs many times, EVERYDAY, while some poor souls end up dead on their first attempt.
Precautions??
1. Read the Guides and FAQs thoroughly. Nodefect maintains an excellent data bank over at the general thread. Then when you think you've understood it all, read some more.
2. Read a little more.
3. Use the search function on xda. Hogwarts stuff, this one..!! Its plain lame when people post that they used the search tool but couldnt find a topic... its powered by google for f***'s sake. If its there on xda, search WILL find it for you.
4. DO NOT PULL BATTERY. Find out more about this before you even contemplate moving forward.
5. Finally, if you do happen to get stuck, post a new thread with a clearly worded topic in the correct section.... Desire Q&A.
Don't worry, I may sound a little gruff to you but we are probably the most civil bunch of people over at xda, the desire s gang. You will receive the best help you can imagine. Hell, even i started out here as a panicked noob, screaming for help when my phone got semi-bricked. It's safe and sound now, in case you were wondering, again thanks to the community.
And finally, Welcome to the 'hood.
If its just Sense 3.0 / GB 2.3.5 you want, then creating a goldcard and running the RUU would probably be easier and safer than S-Off/rooting.
Rooting is not really risky, as long as you know what you're doing. EVERYTHING is tested (A LOT) before it is released to the public, so it's pretty much noob-proof.
There is always risk involved, but no one can tell you how much. You can compare devices on how likely you are to brick them, mostly manufacturers (Apple < Samsung < HTC) but no one can pinpoint a percentage.
The risk is worth the reward, i would even say it's too low, considering the awesomeness you get. I would advice you to go for it, just don't pull the battery, EVER. Also, don't download multiple apps at once from market. You should be fine.

[Q] HTC unlock for Evo View 4g

Can anyone tell me what the unlock on the HTC website actually does. I thought it would allow me to flash custom ROMs but it does not seem to do that. Sorry if this makes me sound ignorant but I kind of am in this aspect. I am new to customizing ROMs to my tablet and phone. I have unlocked my HTC Inspire 4g and gained s-off but the tablet is proving to be more difficult.
found out
Thanks to globetron I found how it works now just got to get to work. Guess I need to read before I start asking.
tips on getting posts
Any ideas to get my post count up so I can access ROMs I am new to this so I really cant help out anyone yet but I cant really think of many questions to ask that are relevant to anything useful. I dont want to cheat the system and cheapen the hard work that goes into this forum but at the same time I want to be able to utilize it too. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Well figured out that HTC Wildfire S is not so easy to root got it unlocked and tried to get it to s-off but no dice any suggestions would be helpful.

[Q] Stuck at HTC logo after flashing ROM

Hi guys.. I have visited the site many many times and usually found all the answers I need. However, I only recently took the plunge and rooted my Desire S. And surprise surprise I think I've done it wrong! I'm stuck at the HTC logo and it never gets any further
The steps I have taken are:
-Unlocked with HTCdev
-Rooted with SuperOneClick (it was all good at this point. Used fine for a couple of days)
-Installed CWM recovery.
-Flashed VanillaIce ROM
And that's as far as I have gotten. The VanillaIce went through the installation process very smoothly, I selected the option 'reboot' and since then, it won't boot past the HTC logo. But I CAN get to the bootloader screen, and recovery mode.
I am on hboot 2.00.0002
S-ON
Radio 3822.10.08.04_M
I know, I'm a noob here, and please believe me when I say I have searched but I can't find an answer to this specific situation and I need your expert help!

You haven't searched. You haven't even thought about searching. If you had searched then you would have found out about HTCDev and boot.img - now go and search

If you bothered reading then you wouldn't need a fix for this "specific situation". HTCDev is the problem. Boot.img is the answer, as I have already posted.
Now look for those and when you realise what it is you can come back and use the thanks button for me and Rain.
If you can't find the answer yourself given the hints we've given you then put your phone in the bin and use a Nokia 3310 instead.
Oh ok, I will need to do this at home later as I'm on linux at work.
Thanks for the help, although the rudeness is quite unnecessary.
Trying to find clear explanations for this stuff is rather difficult, I know the info is out there but it's all scattered about, with threads linking all over the place.
Pls dun misunderstand us. We are not trying to be rude to shuu u away, people have be known to brick their device by not reading thoroughly. They bump into an issue in one thread and tried another solution in another, and in a state of nervousness they blindly and rushly do unnecessary stuff, such as pulling their battery and frying the emmc chip.
Also the solution u are looking for a in the 2nd and 3rd of the search result apart from ur post which is the 1st. And the answer is in the 2nd or 3rd reply.
Why do ppl stressed on reading 1st, because it is ur phone, ur responsiblity, and if it bricks, it is all on u. And to be responsible is to read.
And ur question is not the 1st in the past month, I think there are like 10 different people asking in 10 different thread with 10 different people answering the same 1 thing over and over and over again.
With this in mind, aren't u a bit ignorant in refusing to read the searches u made?
So when people asked u to search by giving u key words, it simply means the answers are there.

Maybe you should read about what XDA was actually created for? It is a Developers site, not a noobs site. I have no problem helping people - if you look you will see that I can actually be extremely helpful when the situation requires it - but when someone comes on here claiming to have searched or not bothering to put in the basic reading then I will ALWAYS point them to do that first.
Just spoon-feeding the answers helps nobody - firstly because the same questions always get asked and secondly because if the person then makes a mistake they haven't got a clue how to recover.
Bear in mind that when I bought my DS and S-Offed it, the only way to do it was with a hardware rig called an XTC-Clip. If you made a mistake with that method your phone was toast - so you can imagine how many hours I spent reading to understand EXACTLY what I was doing.

I do not intend to be rude but when you answer the same question for about hundreds of times and the fact that the search function lists all your hundreds of answers it gets really annoying by two reasons:
1) it feels like you have wasted a lot of time that no one appreciates
2) over time the Desire S section of XDA became quite a good knowledge base but the newcomers do not care to use it and find more easy to flood with new "already answered" pointless threads
Sent from my HTC Desire S
Why not just leave the stupid questions unanswered then, instead of spilling negative words every single time? You are the one who chooses to answer. I don't say I disagree. I also think that people should search better, but I don't get why you put all your energy in those negative reactions. Besides don't blame the noobs for being on xda. Of xda is not meant for everyone, don't make it accessible for everyone....

No one was pissing of at anyone, If i would call my younger sister to read it out loud it wouldn't sound anything like how u imagine, some might even call it cute, but if i were to call my grumpy old grandad to read then i would say some one is piss off.
Matter of perception.

[Q] Is a new root method being worked on?

I've only had my S6 for a couple weeks so mine was already updated to the latest OTA version by the time I got it, and so I can't use pingpong. I don't mean to be redundant and post this question if it has already been asked but I can't find any other info at the moment in this forum, but does anybody know if anything is in the works for the current version that it would be worth holding off on the upcoming 5.1 OTA? Or is the root that you first wave guys got to use probably a one-time thing for this phone? Coming from an HTC one where I was able to unlock my bootloader I am starting to miss having root...
If a new Root is available, you will SEE it all over the forums... no need to ask.

Yeah don't bother reading the question before posting a dumb pretentious answer to it. I asked if one was being WORKED ON that was worth holding off on the OTA for, not if one was available now.
I agree.. Lots of jerks in these forums.. I check regularly to see if a root method is available BUT ALSO to see the progress if any.. Simple yes or no or say nothing .. No need to be an ass.

I'm not sure if a root method is being worked on for the current update but I can tell you that the exploit for pingpong has been patched so that is a one time thing. I think our best bet for the next method will be when 5.1 comes out.

No, everyone has given up all hope and quit.
Seriously, what kind of answer to you think you would get?
The people working on it are rarely going to talk about it until they actually have a solution unless they are working with other developers trying out possible solutions. None of it is going to be public until they have a solution to prevent the MFG or vendors from plugging up a new hole they found before they can use it.
Asking if it is being worked on is just plain dumb. This is the same cycle of every new device that has ever been released with the same questions asked all over again.
What really is the point in asking? IF and when it becomes available it will be big news splashed all over the forums not just here but other places.
Constant asking about it is actually a violation of the forum.

Asking once like I did isn't against any forum rules, trolling everything thread you participate in like you do is: it doesn't take a hard look through your posts to see that. I'm surprised your mommy and daddy let you talk like this on the internet. You don't actually contribute any knowledge or development to this site, you just act like a moron to make yourself feel better about how fat and useless you are. Stop even posting in my thread you scum
