It's a hacked kernel from Desire S made to work with Desire HD. I have my own hacked version of Desire S kernel a few weeks ago already (just ask Option94, I had him test it for me briefly), I don't have a spare phone to test it on (I can't test on my own phone, my only line to the outside world). Even if my own version had worked, we still have an issue with full compatibility with Sense 2.1.
Desire HD had a 2.1 GB Sense leak, so they could leach the USER SPACE drivers from the leak but they were missing the matching kernel. Now with this kernel hack, they have BOTH the Kernel space driver and user space driver to properly make Sense 2.1 work on their phone.
Problem with our phone is the T-Mobile's MySense.... We are totally screwed by this. We are MISSING both the Kernel and User space drivers (and we will NOT have any leak to leach from except the official GB release for our phone ) Even when GB version of MySense is out, we will still have funny compatibility issues when trying to run ported GB pure Sense 2.1 on our phone. We will NEVER have 100% working pure Sense anything on our phone
That's why when Sensation is out, I am moving to that phone, it has pure Sense on it...

Oh, I just remembered about some rumor that a Canadian provider is getting Glacier clone but with PURE GB SENSE on it.... If the rumor is true, that will be the only salvation for our phone to run 100% compatible pure sense on it... I hope it's true, but I am not sure how reliable the rumor is...

Well, that sucks. I thought that when the GB OTA update for the MT4G came out, that we'd have all we need when it comes to kernel development.
What about Canada's Emerald? It's the same phone as the MT4G, and is supposed to come out with Gingerbread/Sense 2.1 (REAL Sense). Wouldn't that help us?

That's actually what faux is talking about in regards to the rumors, so yeah it is true that Canada is getting an MT4G with Gingerbread out of the box. T-Mobile fail?

And I'd have to agree, I love my MT4G but the Sensation is where it's at. I'm just hoping that the bootloader isn't going to be locked or I'll be picking up the G2X instead.

Problem is most of will probably move to the sensation the HTC emerald comes out in june. We will most likely get a dumped in mid-may. If the rumors are true.

I wouldn't say most. Phones are expensive and anyone with a MT4G has only had it for 5 months at the most. I would like the Sensation, but having spent $450 on the MT4G in early November, spending another nearly $500 just a few months later isn't something I'll be doing.

I'm going to sell this one most likely do the installment plan with my upgrade. Sensation probably be my last phone for awhile since I'm skipping quadcore. I have a g2x slightly lcd bleeding and a gslate. Both good devices but not something I'm interested in. When the iPhone 5 comes out Im buy two of them just to sell it on eBay for a ridiculous price.

The rumour is the HTC glacier will be released on Moblicity in Canada as a 2.3 pure sense device. It will be called the HTC emerald. I have only seen one article and it didn't look too promising, but I hope it's true!

Thing is it might be there if we get a at&t radio and a different base band. Tmobile is ran as an independent company. Till the merger goes through or till it doesn't. Never said it did support the bands on at&t but it was advertise on the box.

T-mobile already admited that if the merger goes through the g2x will not be able to run on at&t network...check it out at tmonews.com...

Will Sensation Get Ice Cream Sandwich?

Hi,
Going to upgrade from my Legend to a Sensation this weekend, just hoping someone could chime in, Was curious if Sensation will get an upgrade to Ice Cream when it comes out! Thanks!
Can't see any reason why not. We all got the latest Gingerbread update eventually, so I reckon there will be a phased release of ICS.
The Sensation absolutely should get ICS. Expect a slew of improvements with it too, especially true dual-core support and in general an OS that can match the hardware this phone has.
I did exactly the same upgrade as you and have not regretted my decision, In some way shape or form we WILL get ICS
Definitely must get, because there is an agreement between google and htc regarding os updates, i don't remember the period .

Just the fact we are a dual core phone and ICS has true dual core support should mean we will get the update. Not that it really matters cause well get some 4.0 roms regardless.

Well, we nearly had it sooner. There was a Nexus S that leaked out with ICS on it. It appears that Google remote wiped it before it could be extracted. The thread is on XDA somewhere.

No...Just like Google can remotely remove applications from your device, they can remotely wipe any device...Each one of those Nexus S devices were normally accounted for...When that video leaked all they had to do was do a head count and see (for the sake of conversation we'll say prototype 7) Prototype 7 was missing and wipe it. They have all the information and all to lock it and also have it tied to admin permissions which we all can do on any device running 2.3. It was part of the Enterprise update for business on GB.
Will we get ICS?? I doubt anytime soon, as HTC takes forever embedding Sense into the damn framework and they will NEVER release a non Nexus device without Sense. So if we do you can bet your arse it will be at the most about April/May before we see it.

I was thinking about this. Didn't they say that Google are responsible for OS updates from ICS and not the handset manufacturers as they got pissed with HTC/Samsung etc taking forever to release stuff?
So does that mean all phones released on ICS and beyond will be from Google or that they will have doen the testing and given to HTC to give to us mere mortals on decent Gingerbread phones? Who knows but i'm betting HTC screw us with at least a 6 month wait.

Judging from past experience, if you are asking for a official HTC ICS update for the Sensation, the answer is "very likely" but you probably have to wait a long time.
Typically, when a new version of Android is released, HTC wouldn't update its existing devices to the new version until a few months after it has shipped a whole line of new devices with the new Android version. And because of it having to port Sense over to the new Android build, it would also take HTC quite some time to come up with new devices for the new Android build.
But if you don't need Sense, you will surely get ICS on Sensation. I'm sure Cyanogenmod will be one of the earlier available and full-feature ICS roms. They release their version of Gingerbread for the Nexus One even before Google pushes stock Gingerbread to it.

What the future holds for the Desire S

Hey everyone. So I would like to bring you some discussion here about on what the future holds for our HTC Desire S when it respects to the official HTC support.
The main question here is, what do you think that HTC will do with the Desire S? Will they bring ICS to it? Will they try to be soft and bring just Sense 3.5? Or is our Desire S done and no more updates will come? It would be quite interesting to see what everyone thinks that may happen in the next few months
i doubt very much we will see anymore major official updates ,just maye a few revisions.htc support there phones pretty badly tbh,and as much as i love my desire s and this community i doubt very much i would purchase another one of the htc phones as it will carry on the same legacy i expect .
I think HTC will do nothing. They can't support all the phones they released which is why they've decided to take it slow
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
I hope that HTC is still going to release an ICS update for Desire S, but that's probably false hope. HTC has released too many phones (about 5 different versions of the Sensation?) to provide support for every phone. They will just concentrate on the higher-end models, which unfortunately the Desire S isn't. Luckily there is a great community working hard to provide us with future updates
The current/typical market trend IS to take advantage of the thirst for the bleeding-edge OS and the cutting-edge hardware, and as businesses, they'd be mugs for not exploiting that. There is no way HTC had any serious plans for giving the Desire S official ICS ROM. However...
They (HTC) have gotten the balance wrong this year and they know it. Too much quantity, not enough quality. Sooner or later, even the rich kids will get fed up of being 'expected' to upgrade a handset every 8 months to stay 'on trend'.
At least HTC seem to have taken note of this...
http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/26/htcs-uk-ceo-wants-to-ease-off-the-new-product-gas-focus-on-am/
Don't forget the original Desire did eventually (through popular demand) get an official gingerbread update, just that HTC never designed the phone's hardware to cope with the increased size of the OS over Froyo. So disclaimers were required should we then complain that there were only enough room for 10 apps once 2.3.3 was installed!
But on the flip-side this is why you chose Android. This is why you chose XDA. You want something that comes out of the box, and gives you the opportunity to improve it in your own way, to your own liking. To take the initiative. We almost need HTC to drop the ball so we can pick it up and run with it.
The day a stock Android phone comes out of the box perfect to everyone's needs for years after its purchase will be a sad day for XDA.

Fair enough, I would have believed HTC if they released a official statement about Desire S not meeting hardware requirements.
However, hearing that the Sensation XL is receiving ICS really got me annoyed. It proves the hardware is capable.
The XL is almost identical to us, apart from the OC'ed chip, and thats getting ICS.
I don't see why we can't get the upgrade.
Where is HTC's announcement of the second wave of devices that are getting ICS too? We are still yet to hear from them.

Sorry, i wasn't suggesting that the desire s couldn't cope. I'm pretty sure it could. Just saying that in my opinion it's unlikely HTC will be in a hurry to stop us buying more handsets, and it will be good to see what the devs here manage to port for us.
This week a friend asked me what he should upgrade to this march. He has an old desire, and isn't a heavy user. Not interested in dual cores or massive screens. I looked at all the options and it was still the desire s or the Xperia Ray.
The only reason i recommended the xperia ray was because he HAS to have a Vodafone upgrade. Vodafone's stock ROM on the desire s has that ludicrous 'pocket mode' forced on, and you can't turn it off. 8 hours battery life max. My dad ended up sending his back for that reason. He wouldn't let me root it!

HTC has done many contradictions in the past and sometimes they had to go back in what they said.
First when the Sensation came out people asked if Sense 3.0 would come to older devices then HTC quickly stated that older devices could not run it due to hardware restrictions. Then they released the HTC Rhyme with !GHz CPU and 768MB of RAM running even newer version Sense 3.5. So HTC gave us Sense 3.0 as it was evident that it could run it.
After that we had the Desire 2.3 update. HTC telling people the phone didn't have enough memory for Gingerbread and they had just released the Wildfire S with even worse hardware running Gingerbread from start. So HTC gave people with Desire the 2.3 update.
Then now with ICS. It is obvious that the Desire S can run it (Nexus S...) but with Sense over it and HTC's hesitations over support may lead to no update.
My theory is that when a phone is released it has to be updated to at least one version of Android. The Desire S came out with 2.3 from start so we can believe that it will come to ICS. We will get the answer when HTC reveals the second wave of updates to us.

Very good explanation!
I really do hope that's the case!
I think the DHD is a lucky device... It started with 2.2, got 2.3.3 + New sense 2.1, then another update to 2.3.5 + sense 3.0. If we get ICS, the DHD will have to get ICS (same specs). I don't think HTC want to give the dhd anymore updates
So HTC might choose not to give us ICS for that reason otherwise they would also have to update the DHD.

I may be wrong, but my feeling is that all devices from Desire HD and Desire Z and later will receive the update. The Desire HD was the top phone for HTC of it's time and I don't think HTC will kill it if they decide to give Desire S the update.
The only question here is the all mighty Sense UI and that is HTC's fault because they built a so deeply integrated UI. Honestly I can live without the 3D transitions as ICS actually has its own ones. It will up to what HTC will do with Sense UI.
Dont know about you guys but HTC has always been keep-the-customer-in-dark with Desire S. IMHO I dont know why they do it... I mean it came with sense 2.1 and 2.3 when I bought. After a while some patches and fotas were there but when we got sense 3.0 it was some guys phone which got updated made the news not a disclosure or say news by HTC that its been updated and which makes my geeky mind cheer in the doubt of my mind that we may recieve ICS officially
Now about the thing that here are devs that are doing a hard job to get ICS on ours and imo they have been succesful as in there-was-no-way-but-they-did-it successful. But think if theres an official update what might happen then? I am no dev or **** but as I understand that would made works on other roms ports a heck lot easier...

This is pretty sad, if HTC won't upgrade our Desire S to ICS. I mean, Sony Ericsson has announced and committed to ICS upgrades for their 2011 lineup--and those have the same chipsets as our Desire S! SE's flagship for last year, the Xperia Arc, was launched around the same time frame as our Desire S, with virtually the same Qualcomm chipset. No way HTC can use that excuse, and they know it.
18 months is not yet up for this phone, so if Google is right, we should expect support/updates till around September or so of 2012. As much as I dislike Sense, HTC ought to be ashamed of itself if they won't give us ICS. I can imagine they're in a bind, because they are compelled to give us ICS, but don't want us playing around with the ICS'ed Sense 4.0 and would rather have us get newer, more expensive 4 inch slabs
Come on, HTC. Gain some goodwill among us. Roll out ICS and the latest Sense. You know it makes Sense

That's the way to go, but just as always magic will not happen and HTC Desire S probably will not get ICS update because of that politic, meanwhile Sony Ericsson goes more democratical way and releases updates for customers, not only "top list'' customers as HTC do. I respect HTC, but the point how they sorts updates by devices is to drastic, just too painful for user like us, who knows what their device is able to do, but they simply do not feed it. To be honest, if HTC Desire S will get official ICS update, then it will mean that HTC is changing their political statement and magic is happening.

WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so happy right now. Saw the post on twitter and went crazy. After faulty eMMC's, locked bootloaders and no updates, i was thinking of going samsung next time. Not gonna happen.
HTC, learning from their mistakes.
EDIT: Just read that the Sensation will get it by the end of march, and the XL soon after. Then, probably the Evo 3D will follow. Our device should be the first among single core family (DHD and IS, not Sensation XL) to get the update, like it got the 2.3.5 Sense 3 update. I believe it would be close to late April/early, May. So it's gonna be quite a long wait. But better late than never
I'm amazed...... Wow, never expected this! Glad its confirmed.

Seems a long way off, but like you say, better late than never
I'm sure there will be a leaked ROM for the us, DHD, IS, XL, and it could be easily ported
THing is, it won't ship with Sense 4.0, but instead 3.6
Bit sad....
It's kind of like the original Desire upgrade. It got the Gingerbread update, but HTC chose not to update the Sense version to 2.1.. THey kept the old version (Maybe because of internal memory issues?)
THat was kind of a rubbish update IMO.
Hopefully our update turns out to be good!
We really don't need to care of Sense 3.6 or 4.0. Even the update isn't important. What's important is the kernel 3.0 that will accompany it, and it's source. After that, a Sense 4 port should be easy. It'll be just like what we have now - official Sense 3 and ported Sense 3.5, both on Android 2.3.5
Maybe we get lucky and get Sense 4 right away, who knows. All i know is, HTC won my loyalty with this.

Yeah
Thats the main reason I'm happy too
I have no intentions of using the official update itself. I'm just interested in getting the base for this ROM & the kernel source. From there devs can tweak the base (Lowveld ) And the ROM will be much better
Hopefully HTC still release a WVGA device that will come with Sense 4.0 (although it seems unlikely)
Because the ROM will need resizing the images etc, which is not a easy and perfect job.
Virtuous Unity was a great job by the team, they resized the Sensations qHD Sense to work on our device. But unfortunately it still had flaws, inconsistent size issues, & wasn't as fast as the WVGA version we have now...
Anyway, enough of my rambling, I'm really happy with HTC's decision! They are even supporting the DHD which is a 2 year old phone.
Seriously, that device is lucky! It went from 2.2 + Sense 2.0 > 2.3.3 + Sense 2.1 > 2.3.5 + Sense 3.0 > 4.0.X + Sense 3.6/4.0
2 major OS updates and 3 major Sense updates! Thats as good as Apple with their iPhone 3GS updates!
One thing i did notice, was they haven't announced any plans to upgrade the HTC Flyer to ICS...
I was considering buying one if it did get the update officially

Crazy news. Keeping my desire s a tad longer then...
I also think this is great news, as I am not much for rooting and doing stuff to my phone. And better late than never.
BUT I think the main problem is that all the big phone producers have their own UIs on top of Android, meaning that we never get the updates OR really really late.
If they just would let google control updates, then all users would have ICS already on their phone regardless of brand and phone (overseeing old phones that cannot handle the new software).
I know that the big companies need to differentiate themselves from each other.. but still, just what I would prefer.
Waiting for HTC Sense on ICS
I dont know about you guys but I am pretty happy with HTC Sense and would love to have an ICS rom with Sense. Will wait for the update from HTC to try out ICS on my Desire S.
I just got a good reason to keep my desire s for another 6 months.
That guy who came out earlier and say he believes all the phones running gingerbread should be able to run ICS was right after all.

Absolutely not relevant
Sent by my fingers to your head.
Actually, this was relevant, but a month ago. Now, everything you will see about the update in the General section will be re-posts or "information leaks on ETAs" from highly unreliable sources. The update is close, it'll be here in April and as soon as it comes, there will be a post with a download link in the DEV section

There are no leaks - so I fear that the update is far away.
in former times the ROMs always "leaked" (aka ROM for beta testers) 1 month before the official releases...

It's too bad...

It's too bad that by the time a real (fully working) AOSP ROM drops for this phone I will already be on my next device. I purchased my original Sensation (now on my 4th or 5th due to dust issues...) back in June of last year. CM7 was always half baked, and although it was my daily it was never really 100% complete. Not to mention they never released an official CM7 for the Sensation.. But anyway, now CM9 is "in progress" but my biggest fear is that it will be 4 to 6 months (at LEAST) before a fully stable, working, reliable AOSP ROM (CM9 or otherwise) is released for our device. The most unfortunate part is that the hardware as a whole is certainly capable, and the devs are certainly good, but it will most likely be a case of "too little too late" for me. I have my eye on a true STOCK device such as the Nexus line, as that will really be the only way to go in the future. The main reasons are as follows, let me know if others agree
1) Almost instant (not really, but you get my point!) updates from Google
2) Those same updates can immediately be applied by Dev's for even more fun!
3) NO SENSE
4) NO SENSE to remove
5) Did I mention those phones don't have Sense???
I am with you. Though Virtuous has relatively decent ICS ROM that I am using, almost no trace of Sense.
Actually considering Galaxy Nexus now, on dailysteaps for $530 today.
Not sure wife will approve since she is still on Vibrant.

Its a good question, and the reason was I simply did not know how awful Sense was. This was my second Android phone, and my first was a bone stock (and loving it!) G2 made as Google intended it to be. I honestly had no concept of the horrifying abomination that Sense is. It was beyond my comprehension that HTC would bother to not only create that beast (sense), but to make it so hard to remove. I loved the hardware build of my first HTC phone and I just assumed Sense would be minor cosmetic changes, clearly I was VERY wrong and should have done much more work before selecting a new device. Also, at the time I purchased the Sensation the hardware was top notch, and it was the most powerful device you could find. Immediately upon powering it on and seeing Sense however, I realized the gravity of my mistake.....
Hmm well. i dont the blame the guy cause.......
This is my first HTC. on the galaxy s side sense use to look like the best android rom ever! we only ever dreamt to get sense 2.1 on our device.
Now that i got sensation with sense 3.0 it was a disaster.
The ui was good but toooooooooooooooooo memory hogging and then all of a sudden i realise samsung majorly improve touchwiz and it looks amazing, the day i slapped myself and what makes it worse is the fact the amount of support the galaxy s 2 is getting compared to our phone
Now my next phone is galaxy s 3 definitely.
however now everything is starting to look so much better tbh because and solely because of trip and only 10% virtuous team and shinzon.
he has had massive breakthroughs with our phone recently. he just released 95% stable fully working sense 4 rom which i think is much more optimised than sense 3.0
and now that he has almost everything working on his aosp tripndroid os rom including bluetooth apart from video recording we are in good shape

That's laughable. Virtuous Inquisition is probably the best AOSP-like ROM out right now and Trip had nothing to do with it.
Hope you enjoy your new phone OP!
Let us know when you get one, and I have to agree with you, the lack of a true senseless rom is pretty much non-existent for this phone. Nonetheless, enjoy your day!

why? Because I REFUSE to buy a samsung. (although I'm starting to change my mind for the gal nex now). I bought this phone simply for the hardware, not the UI. Just cause you got a phone for a reason, doesn't mean other's have to be the same.

My Vibrant started hardware malfunction on data radio in June and at that time HTC Sensation seemed to be a high end choice, just came out with dual core, good camera, etc. I had G1 prior to Vibrant which was made by HTC ( as did my wife and teen) and they were well built and had a good hardware. Little did I know of all the keylogger and other goodies baked into Sensation, should have taken Nexus S instead in a hindsight.
The phone is not too bad with Virtuous ICS ROM now, but in future I will go for Nexus devices, no matter if CPU/GPU not the latest or greatest. Still conidering that Galaxy Nexus dailysteals deal for $530 running today.

i want to jump ship to the Galaxy Nexus because of the same reasons (ie lack of AOSP dev support on the Sensation)... however, the crappy camera on the g.nex is really of putting to me since i use the camera daily.
i think i will wait to see how the galaxy s3, xperia s, and the htc one all do before upgrading... my priorities for my next phone are:
- Krait or Tegra3
- at least 300ppi
- strong AOSP dev support ie unlocked bootloader
- 720p and OLED a huge plus

Who was the first to bring aosp ics first to sensation?
Who ported a fully stable sense 4 rom?
Who ported miui v4 first?
Who's got everything working on aosp?
Then vorbeth calls trip a kanger on twitter and then says that's why he doesn't release his sources. Well if he did, we would see them posting there work.
And vorbeth is becoming big headed on twitter cause he can compile cm9 from source? There's a step by step tutorial in the development section so even new users can easily build.

AT&T: No official ICS for Inspire 4G

LG Nitro
Motorola ATRIX 2
Motorola ATRIX 4G
Pantech Burst
Pantech Element
Samsung Captivate Glide
Samsung Galaxy Note
Samsung Galaxy S II
Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket
Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9
are the device getting ICS this year.
Sucks that HTC announced ICS for DHD but we don't get ICS from AT&T.
Source :- http://www.androidcentral.com/att-provides-ics-list-nothing-surprise-us
But with the devs we have here, we will have ics for sure.
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using xda premium
We all knew it wasnt gonna get it. ATT EOL the Inspire a long time ago. This has always been the case with them. Once the DHD gets it then it can be ported over.
I'm not worried about it. The dev's at this site could run a ics on a toaster...
If your rooted already, you wouldn't get the update anyways right?
An official ics bloated to hell at&t version would suck so bad.
I'm pumped my Atrix will have it too. Overclocked to 1.45, that phone is sooo damn fast.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
You only need to hop over to the Desire HD forum to see that if you are S-OFF and rooted, you don't need AT&T...
After all the problems that the Gingerbread update had, would you want an official ICS update? Not me, no thank you.
OEM updates cost money to the service providers. I wasn't shocked at all that the DHD was getting it and the I4G wasn't.
Follow the link in my sig for an AOSP ICS ROM that makes a great daily driver.
I still don't understand why these kind of threads continue to pop up around these parts...it's been known AT&T won't give the Inspire ICS. It has been known that the Desire will get it. It has or at least should be known that a handful of devs are pumping out ARs of ICS for the Inspire. It's a known fact that there are literally 10 threads about this same topic that ends the same way: The Inspire isn't getting it but its getting it anyway because the Devs are freakin schweeeeet.
old news is old? Only phone that gets supported beyond the 6month mark is the iphone, and that is because it is supported an updated by apple. android phones dont get that luxury. but id rather have my os be open source so that way i can use custom stuff, as we all know ATT fails at life with their mods to the software updates. i didnt get into rooting and modding till i got that gb update from att and made my phone run like sh*t, id never trust them again. lol

HTC is probably going to support the Desire HD for at least 18 months, it was their flagship at some point, so support will continue until it's specs are limited in some way that doesn't allow further upgrades (The Desire's internal storage was way too small to permit GB Sense or ICS Sense to be loaded.)
I laugh at this thread. My inspire got ICS back in January. All that matters. Props to the devs.

That's because you have a kernel that's filled with hacks that make things very messy and make bugs insanely hard to deal with.
Ok, I know I'm just someone that just sits back and watches things go by, but even if know that there will be no official ICS for the i4g. No offense to the OP or anyone else, but can this just stop? If you want it, just download and flash. If you want to have an official ICS, change phone.

Even with the bugs ICS, and any other rom around here for that matter, is still miles ahead of anything Att or HTC could come up with. Att needs to leave the software up to the real devs here on XDA.

Pretty much as soon as proper camera support comes out I'm sold on one of the ICS roms out there. And even then its just video camera that they dont have working right, still camera has come a long way.
Been using RCMix 4.0 since November when capy stopped developing it, and it's truly a masterpiece. I'd never even consider using something AT&T put together over our devs. There are some true artists out there.
