Data throttling removed - T-Mobile LG G2x

Update with paulobrein G2X pre-dexopt patch
OK. I did not originally create this, however I did the mod on other phones.
I have attached a file for the ones like me where 5 gigs of unlimited (oxymoron) data is not quite enough. I can not get CW to work with mount/data, so I went with this method :
1. DO A BACKUP FIRST!!!(The first time I did this I went in to never ending boot loop!
2. Download file, extract it, and place it on your SD or Internal memory. (Just remember where you put it.)
3. Go to settings, Wireless & networks, mobile networks and check everything except "Use only 2G networks". (When you do this you will not be able to access this again.)
4. You must have Root Explorer installed.
5. Open Root Explorer and go to the service file you downloaded. Hold down over it and select copy.
6. Now go to system/framework, click Mount R/O and select paste. Select yes to overwrite the file.
7. Close out of everything and go to Rom Manager and select "Fix Permissions".
8. Reboot and you should be good to go.
Proof for all the skeptics. Look at the download speed, time and battery %:

The G2X pre-dexopt patch (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051616) posted by paulobrien which fixes lags utilizes the services.jar as well. Did you edit that services.jar file or the stock one?

The stock one. Did paulobrien edit the services.jar? If not the only files removed were the 7 throttle files, so it should work together. At least mine does. I loaded his after I fixed mine.

What does this do???
WHAT DOES THIS DO???
I am new to posting but been a long time reader.
waiting for my new phone to get here tommorrow and I am actually off from work tommorrow so I have a long time to get to know my new phone.
Upgrading from a rooted G1

Why don't you edit the services.jar that he uploaded and then post it here? That way, the services.jar you have here will have the G2X pre-dexopt patch as well as the data throttling removed.

OK, give me a while I will.

So how exactly does this prevent TMO from receiving data info from your device? Does this block the IMEI? I ask because I know a lot of people who've tried and failed in bypassing TMO's ability to throttle your device.

I thought back when this came up in the Vibrant forums that it didn't affect the communication with T-Mobile, it just removed the software command to the phone to throttle down. I could be dead wrong however. I do most of my online work while on wifi, so I've never had a need for this.

OK Has been fixed with paulobrein G2X pre-dexopt patch!

I can say it works! My wife has over 9gigs on her phone now. T-mobile sends you the text that they are slowing you down, however there are 7 files in the service jar that are used to activate this.

There was an extensive data throttling thread a few months ago (which I think is closed) where throttling files and other counter files were removed/modified, but nothing was effective at the end. It was the the opinion of most that the throttling was done on the TMo servers. Some posters even moved their SIM to another device, but after initially working, throttling came back.
I will be surprised if this stops or restores throttling. Someone who is near the cap will have to give it a try to see if it works.

also coming from a vibrant trying EVERYTHING to make there methods work
from:
edited service.jars
to VPN change
to signal tower change
to keeping wifi on and then leaving the wifi area
i will only say this once.....
YOU CANNOT DEFEAT THROTTLING (T-mobiles throttling)
not doubting your work but its highly doubtful this will work with everyone
after trying all of the vibrant methods and even some of my own... i ended up being throttled for 3 months straight.... they couldnt even fix it........ thats how a got the G2x cuz i was ready to cancel (they where gonna waive the ETF) and offered me a phone for the wrongful 3 month throttle
if this does work... (trust me i will be trying it as im @ 1.6GB of data ATM)
i will donate!
thanks in advance if it works
if it doesnt good try!
(im not trying to sound Ignorant but this really hasnt worked sense the G1 days)

its true... ive dealt with A LOT of "android specialist" (i use that word freely cuz half the time they dont know what the F is going on)
and every service ticket/help desk ticket they said they put on my account was sent through THEIR "engineers" they have to remove/fix it from the server to the tower..... so again... not to sound ignorant or arrogant but its highly unlikely (even though i wish it would work) it will work

So, this will help with those of us that just came to t-mo and got stuck with the 2gb throttle as well then?

I'm looking forward to the test.
Post up a speedtest result along with the throttling text.
Maybe a screen of the t mobile my account app's data readout.

my guess it is should (if it works)
but may need modification from 5GB cap down to 2GB cap
not sure tho just my interpretation of the IDEA to modify the service.jar file(s)

So I see in the screenshot of speedtest your running cm7...what's the deal? Anyone else notice this.

I see that it's a custom framework and services.jar. Why do you say it's CM7?

The way the battery meter is thin with the percentage. Its an option in cm7. Its def gingerbread or gb theme....but it looks like cm7. And since we don't have any roms out its just a guess

[ROM-DEV] 04/16/10 | Back from the dead | Coming soon

Geek For Me is proud to announce:
Toast's Secret Sauce
From the developers who brought Eclair (Android 2.x) to the CDMA Hero
I'm confused about this post/rom
A lot of new HeroC users out there don't even remember a 2.1 before damage got the leaked RUUs. I actually ported it to the Hero way back in November of 2009 from a copy that had been ported to the GSM Hero. Myself, toast, and a couple of others then spent MONTHS getting everything working. We started with basically nothing at all and ended up with a near fully functioning rom, through the use of real dev work. Check the older posts at http://geekfor.me/android21/ for info on the previous work. I also went ahead and made this post using the old thread so that maybe people can get some history on it.
Can you tell me more about this?
I'll be staying tight lipped for the moment but what I will say is that this is marked as a dev rom for a reason. It is not going to be a 100% functioning rom and is made more as a proof of concept, and for fun. It is not meant as a daily rom for most users.
When will this be released?
Coming soon to a phone near you. We're still working on hammering out some bugs, and adding some features.
And a little teaser (benchmarks) :

Just make a nandroid backup and you'll be fine. lol. This doesn't modify anything that could possibly brick your phone. But yea... it's pretty to look at but doesn't do anything just yet. I can probably get wifi working and such but I don't know what my chances are of making it work on Sprint. I don't know if it even ties in to our radio.img at all and if it's compatible with 2.1.
Many thanks!
I will be flashing this momentarily but wanted to ask you generally what is involved in "porting" a ROM from GSM to CDMA. My naive understanding is that 1.6 and up are GSM/CDMA capable.
And I must admit (with a developer background in many flavors of *nix, particularly the open source varieties of Linux and BSD) I'm not sure I understand why Android is so device specific. Is it the device drivers for individual hardware, the radio? Chip/CPU architecture?
Thank again for the work, I'll let you know what happens!
Hey Flipz.
have you tried to load the modules from the 1.5 rom. ie the radio and all other pertinent modules for the cdma radoi
Tried it can't get past the boot screen. Waited for a crazy long time. You didn't say to do a Nandroid backup in your post, What should I do now? Just kidding, you know it's going to seriously be asked in a couple of posts though.
from the sceen shots i can most likely tell what the major issue is.(i.e. 2.6.27) lol... but hell yeah man!!! thanx fixin to flash now.
If you wait a seriously long time and it won't boot then you likely didn't do a wipe before you flashed the update. It will fail horribly and just keep looping on the startup screen.
I haven't done a single thing yet to try and get anything working other than getting it booting. I wanted to post it up here ASAP.
ah I didn't see to do a wipe, if I wipe the nandroid on the sdcard stays right? I assume it does but I'm going to copy to the copter to be safe. Thanks.

Yup. The wipe pretty much just clears from info from /data/. But having multiple backups is always a good thing!
ok man great... it boots. it takes a minute but it boots. ur right nothing works. maybe bluetooth but all i did was scan for devices. it scanned. but i dont got a bt device. anyhow im gonna charge my phone a bit an try to debug some issues. phone is dead so i gotta wait a few. but thanx again man... good work
oh yeah it booted after a wipe, I feel dumb, it's kind of cool to play arround. the two things I really wanted to see from the 2.1 where the pinch to zoom home screen trick that will zoom out and show all 7 homescreens at once. And the Landscape home screen. Oh well it's really cool to check it out on a CDMA device now after all the GSM brothers have been having fun.
well the phone works. still says no service though... hmmm weird

if u cant then try plugging in the usb and adb shell. thats all i did. i was doing that then my wife called and surprised the hell out of me
Does sense UI now work with the accelerometer, per rumors and leaks) or is that not the case yet?
idk... i tried using teeter and the ball wouldnt move.... i think the accel is broken... bluetooth works i paired up with my wifes eris

Interesting - Vibrant ROM on Captivate

Day 1 - Rooted my phone successfully .
Day 2 - Hosed it up royally with a bad metamorph attempt at changing the fremework-res items (endless stream of FC's at startup, no icons, no menus, no adb access)
Since I couldn't find an original ROM for the Captivate, I started messing with the Vibrant ROM files from MS_Guru's post on the Vibrant forums
http...forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728698
Using Odin and the combination of the Vibrant .pit file and the T959-PDA.tar file (Didn't flash the CSC or Phone tar's figuring they were tied to the hardware and not the ROM) I got it running again!
I haven't played with it to see just how much functionality is missing using a T-Mobile ROM on AT&T, but the phone (3G even), wifi, and standard stuff seems to work just fine.
I definately don't suggest doing this as a ROM replacement, but as my phone was useless prior to I figured what the heck!
Very interesting...thanks for sharing. That to me is just more proof that Vibrant ROMs won't be too big of a pain to port.
Congrats on getting your phone working again. This good news because it shows that the vibrant and all other galaxy s roms can be interchanged without much modification

This is a little off topic, but damn you have had a lot of recent phones I thought I was crazy having iPhone 3G, iPhone 3Gs, ATT Nexus One, and now the Samsung Captivate in a little over a year. Mine all came from one provider you must have accounts with Sprint too. How does the EVO compare to the Captivate and N1 in your opinion?

the only things are the volume keys are backwards, and the home button is swapped with the back button :/ does anyone know a fix for this? or if the stock captivate firmware is coming anytime soon?

bricked!
hey guys i flashed the kernel from mimocans lag fix but my captivate would not boot up correctly so i tried reflashing it. in the middle of the process my laptop died and now my phone is stuck on a screen with an exclamation point between a phone and a computer
Unplug the USB cable.
Remove the battery, put it back in.
Hold down the volume down button then press power. You should see the android with the shovel right away. Try the flash again.
If that doesn't work, remove and replace battery again, then try holding the up volume button and then power.
Volume Down + Power is the way it's supposed to work, but if you have pushed Vibrant firmware, those buttons get reversed.
neither of these seem to be working they both just keep me at a screen with a slowly blinking phone ! computer
I was able to get it up and running but alot of things are broken. The orientation in the settings isnt working. It only stays on landscape. Also, the market doesnt work, nor the reset phone option.
I was going to try to use the system dump from the other thread after I flashed this but I get multi-csc errors and assert failed :getprop. Then if you try to flash it you get an error something along the lines of its not the right hardware version.
I was going to try to root the phone then push over the folders from the system dump one at a time. I dont even know if that will work even after I have root. We really need a Stock ROM or RUU because this is ridiculous.
Any ideas?

Yeah, this ROM totally preys on the not so clever reps that work at stores like Sprint and Best Buy. No offense, of course. I actually returned my last Evo with a stock ROM that was still sporting the Superuser Permissions apk. They didn't catch that.10 times out of 9 they're not going to even know about rooting or what to look for to spot a rooted device.
Anyone working for them that wouldnt catch this, wouldnt catch a non stock rom no matter what it is. Anybody actually looking to tell if a phone is rooted will look for a custom recovery.

I highly doubt any rep is looking for a custom recovery, although that would be the thing to look for. But seeing the Superuser Permissions app might cause a rep to grow a brain and do some investigating, which could potentially lead to some problems returning your Evo, if you are in fact, returning it rooted. I'm just trying to circumvent some hassle by eliminating that possible hitch.
Sheer genius.

LOL even with a custom rom and boot screen Sprint took my phone back. Who cares? rooting doesn't effect your hardware so why would they even care? Flashing an official RUU undoes rooting for the most part anyway (minus unrevoked forever)

1st of all EVERYONE I worked with at Sprint and half of the upper management have rooted Evos, even rooted Epics. We know, we're not idiots you idiot
The reps aren't really going to care because the account that device was active on can get charged up to full retail for the new device if the Evo is discovered to be rooted. Most of the time these phones get recycled as refurbished replacement phones, and there's a simple check (a couple actually) to determine root, with or without Superuser. Got an e-mail about this from our service technicians about going into the About Phone section and how the phone betrays itself.
That and the bootloader screen shows S-Off at the top for most rooted Evo's which takes all of 60 seconds to check.
On a side note, it really is unlikely Sprint is wasting man-power checking every single evo coming in, especially with everyone trading up to the 3D. Just throwing it out there, YOU REALLY SHOULD JUST UNROOT the damn thing it's easy and could (possibly) spare you north of $450. I mean really, even if it takes an hour you theoretically made almost $500 an hour.

I'm pretty sure this method is intended primarily for those taking their phones in for service.
When actually sending the phone back to Sprint (to take advantage of their insurance, for example), a full unroot should always be done. That's where the technicians will be more likely to poke and prod.

I don't care if you don't use it, I didn't ask you. This is for the people who actually use it.
Is there any possible way somebody can come up with a form of accessing the app in the near future? Google has dropped support for Rooted phones.
Or are we pretty much ****ed forever unless we have our phones completely stock?
Nah, personally I am waiting for my bank (Chase) to roll out their own version. I have a Visa, and would rather be able to choose debit or credit when using my phone. I think Fifth Third does something similar with their plastic card.
Basically wait until the iPhone gets an NFC chip, and watch mobile payments take off.
I have a Visa too, so I guess that would be a good alternate. Hopefully they actually support rooted users or I'll be pissed.
Yeah, wish we could spoof the root-check. Not like Google Wallet running on my rooted phone is any less secure than my regular wallet.

Seriously, and I have a bit less money and less important things in it!
I tried going back to the original and it doesn't work either

I'm hoping someone will come up with a fix. I still have $20 on my Wallet app and I can't use it..... Would still love to use it.
Pretty convenient too since my campus has so many vending machines that accepts NFC payment..
Can't you turn root on and off in cyanogenmod 9? It's in the development options. Give that a try?
kernels ; battery ; ROM ; gov/sched
Now with summaries in the first posts. Convenient for XDA app users!

supercurio's Voodoo OTA RootKeeper has that function to temporary unroot. I still get insufficient privileges..
Is it really only a root issue? My rooted stock NS4G had wallet running just fine last week before I flashed a different ROM. I thought Google was just blocking devices it didn't recognize.
So if we spoofed the device name, etc. Would it work?

i think wallet will still work but its not supported on rooted devices. basically they are saying they are not liable if you lose money because you were rooted
I'm rooted on vhGomez rom ( which is so awesome btw and i advise you to try it out) with matr1x kernel 17.5 and I can't get my card to hook up right I'll upload a screenie in a sec.

i thought prepaid cards are disabled for everyone. rooted and non rooted
I may be mistaken but I thought they were turned back on with the update.
EDIT! Important!
I figured out how to make it not say your device is not supported! Just move Google wallet from
system/app/
to
data/app/
Then restart and boooom! No bar saying its not supported. Idk if this will affect how it works so try at your own risk.

Google wallet will still work for everyone, its just that if you're rooted they're not liable if you lose money, so they're legally warning you with that banner. People have been reporting that even while rooted it has worked and some have even heard it straight from Google. Check out the Galaxy Nexus forums, there's a thread on it. And as of now new cards get provisioned just fine, but if you already had a card and you're trying to re-add it then you have to wait until the next update, Google has stopped that and gave the time frame 1-2 weeks from when they released the last update.
Ok, that makes alot more sense I thought my card wasn't adding because I was rooted.
Thank you.

You got locked out of the secure element chip, Google is suppose to release an update to fix that. That happened because you cleared data or removed wallet without resetting wallet from within the app itself in options, if you have a titanium backup saved then restore and reset within the app, then you'll still have to wait until Google let's you re-add your card, like me and NS4G john, but you won't be locked out. Also if you restore with titanium backup you still won't be able to use your card even though its there, you'll get a payment not sent error when you try to pay, I know from personal experience.

I use my NS4G unactivated without service (as an Android iPod touch, basically).
Since Google Wallet uses NFC, can I use it even though my phone's not activated? Is the entire handshake/exchange with the register done between the phone and the store's NFC reader, or does the phone call home over cell signals every time you make a transaction?

Done with LG

LG can kiss my ass. After over 2 hours of trying to upgrade the damn baseband the tool still keeps messing up. This is insane. They should have gotten it right the first time. I'm done with LG. Notice the time lapse of my second attempt to upgrade this ****. ICS is more stable on my htc hd2. I'm pretty sure I'm now soft bricked. Good luck to the rest of you dealing with this nightmare of a phone. I'll be using my hd2 till I order a galaxy nexus. Also if you know what the problem could be please let me know. I have all of the drivers and its a brand new windows 7 pc I'm using.

Did you reboot both items and make sure you follow directions to the "T" in the threads for this stuff. Also look into other ways. And finally this didn't need its own thread lol, but I understand the need to vent, again read through the threads and you'll see people having your issue and then you'll probably find your solution. Also make sure you are bone stock recovery and all I can't remember if that was a problem or not for some.

You could try the kdz app. Also upgrading the bb breajs bluetooth in every rom except stock. I actually upgraded mine and ended up down grading with kdz. New bb is only good if you stay stock or dont need bluetooth calling at all.
I know i was just curious to see how much it would improve the device. I know its only for gps but i was just curious. Anyway, ill look into flashing cwm tomorrow and just keeping the july baseband. I was just pissed because there is only so many errors a person can take before they vent. Thanks guys. I noticed that the ics roms are solvong data drops. Hopefully it becomes more useful to me.

Dont let it fool you, the new bb doesnt help gps, it still sucks. The only improvement it gave is that i was told i sounded louder to someone on the other end than i did on the old bb.
The newer bb also breaks bluetooth unless they fixed that. I'd stay away from the newer bb (maybe that's only on the ICS roms).
But I 100% agree with you, this phone should've been recalled. It would've been 1000x better for LG to cut their losses and recall the phone than to ruin their entire image for themselves. See you on the other side of this P.O.S. Goodluck!
Also disable any firewalls/antivirus. I was having similar trouble until I disabled everything.
Thanks. Yeah it sucks because this phone has a lot of potential but ****ty support. Maybe ill try disabling it and going for one more try. But i think im just gonna stick with the old baseband.
New bb is good in my opinion, but not really worth changing. To much risk for a phone that will eventually have little support, but the devs we do have are awesome and they support the new bb. Love my g2x,but can't wait to upgrade.

I got my G2x the day it was released. I was so excited... All went down hill from there. I appreciate all the devs that worked on our phones, but today I ordered a nexus. I just can't take it anymore.

If you are asking me, no. I have tried them all. I'm currently on CM7, it's the best on my phone. It still had lots of issues though.

I think it's about time for me to move on from the G2X. Too many problems still after all this time. Maybe the SGS3 will suit me better.

CM7.2 was a nice little update.. until I overslept for work because my phone had another SOD. I noticed if I leave my Wifi or bluetooth on- it will sometimes SOD... i just have to make sure i turn those two radios off... its only happen 3 time since I updated about a month ago(?). maybe i'll go back to 7.1... i just hate reinstalling the apps even with Titanium backup..

Nvdia too
The biggest barrier, IMO, is Nvidia's refusal to release driver code or binaries to support the chipset that runs our phone's graphics. I for one am not buying Nvidia's stuff again.
