[Fake-Unrooted-ROM] Why unroot? Flash this! Stock Froyo. - EVO 4G Android Development

Returning your Evo anytime soon? Why unroot when you can just flash a completely plain Jane looking stock Froyo ROM that's lacking the Superuser apk? The geniuses over at Sprint or Best Buy will never be able to tell the difference. This is netarchy's HTC OTA Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, build 3.36.651.6 (Rooted) Odexed ROM, the -only- thing that has been changed is the removal of the Superuser Permissions apk.
Wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache, then flash.

If you use this, feel free to gloat in this thread about how you just returned a rooted Evo to Sprint or Best Buy.

Are you trying to get over on the man?
If so, where's the" like' button?

It goes further than just the rom...truth be told, there's a system they can actually look in to see what rom the phone is running...(I worked for Sprint), but I don't think they're smart enough to look at it...I'll post shots of what it looks like...sometime this week...I've been meaning to give a shout to all the Devs to add something that allows a person to make the Rom look stock...

Yeah, this ROM totally preys on the not so clever reps that work at stores like Sprint and Best Buy. No offense, of course. I actually returned my last Evo with a stock ROM that was still sporting the Superuser Permissions apk. They didn't catch that.10 times out of 9 they're not going to even know about rooting or what to look for to spot a rooted device.

Anyone working for them that wouldnt catch this, wouldnt catch a non stock rom no matter what it is. Anybody actually looking to tell if a phone is rooted will look for a custom recovery.

I highly doubt any rep is looking for a custom recovery, although that would be the thing to look for. But seeing the Superuser Permissions app might cause a rep to grow a brain and do some investigating, which could potentially lead to some problems returning your Evo, if you are in fact, returning it rooted. I'm just trying to circumvent some hassle by eliminating that possible hitch.

Sheer genius.

yes, of coarse

LOL even with a custom rom and boot screen Sprint took my phone back. Who cares? rooting doesn't effect your hardware so why would they even care? Flashing an official RUU undoes rooting for the most part anyway (minus unrevoked forever)

Thanks you saved me a hour before trading in my sons evo

Thx for that, you saved me from unrooting (again) and rooting my phone (again).
I have to take it to the service to fix my camera.

1st of all EVERYONE I worked with at Sprint and half of the upper management have rooted Evos, even rooted Epics. We know, we're not idiots you idiot
The reps aren't really going to care because the account that device was active on can get charged up to full retail for the new device if the Evo is discovered to be rooted. Most of the time these phones get recycled as refurbished replacement phones, and there's a simple check (a couple actually) to determine root, with or without Superuser. Got an e-mail about this from our service technicians about going into the About Phone section and how the phone betrays itself.
That and the bootloader screen shows S-Off at the top for most rooted Evo's which takes all of 60 seconds to check.
On a side note, it really is unlikely Sprint is wasting man-power checking every single evo coming in, especially with everyone trading up to the 3D. Just throwing it out there, YOU REALLY SHOULD JUST UNROOT the damn thing it's easy and could (possibly) spare you north of $450. I mean really, even if it takes an hour you theoretically made almost $500 an hour.

I'm pretty sure this method is intended primarily for those taking their phones in for service.
When actually sending the phone back to Sprint (to take advantage of their insurance, for example), a full unroot should always be done. That's where the technicians will be more likely to poke and prod.

That will be too nice of AT&T. No, you only get such notification TWO months AFTER the update has been pushed out. In this case, it is the old JH7 update.
Doesn't matter anyway, I'm running Doc's V6.1 2.2.1 JPY
I've been seeing this same topic repeatedly being brought up more so since the Nexus S came out. I figured I'd make an attempt and try to talk to someone semi official about it. See below:

Well, at least that chat seems to put paid to the idea we'll be getting 2.2 in 2010.
I also recieved 3 texts this morning about this, but my phone cannot connect to ATT servers so I called them to ask what this was all about. I'm on the newest JH7 as I just got this as a replacement phone a few weeks ago. I kept this new phone unrooted and unmodified for the moment to see if any new OTA's would load to my phone as I had issues with the OTA for JH7, I believe that I used DG's update.zip on the old phone to get it. Anyway, I told the tech at ATT what version that I was running and if they were really trying to push a new update out. He stated that it is a new update and the reason that I can't connect to the servers is that they are probably overloaded now with others trying to download it. I also asked if it is the 2.2.1 update and he said that he believes so, but no definitive answer as of yet. And yes, I'm also sick of a new thread about a possible update every day, so that's why I called ATT and figured that I'd share what I found out with our community. I just hope that the tech is correct in assuming that it is 2.2.

When the push comes down, i'm still betting on St. Patrick's Day, you'll know about it. It'll be all over the internet.
Yep, I'm an idiot.............trusted ATT, didn't want to fall in to that trap. Worst part is, that I should've know better, I've even followed the numerous other posts. Anyway, this afternoon I chatted to another rep and I guess that they were trying to push the JH7 update to my phone even though it came to me preloaded, which makes complete sense
The second rep stated it wouldn't be available until next year....

You clearly didn't see the debacle that was the Canadian Captivate launch. Bell and Roger's both announced their SGS phones around the beginning of August, Bell had theirs out in a week, Roger's said within the month. No one got their phone until November. I don't remotely trust anything they say, and besides, they said this before their phone even came out.
amazed that people (that frequent XDA forums now less) would be so heartbroken about lack of official froyo.
sure i will probably take the official release for a spin when it gets here but i am guessing it won't last more than 24-48 hours before i re-flash a custom 2.2 or custom gingerbread which may here before official 2.2.
There have been multiple quality roms froyo roms available for months...and most of them i am betting offer more in the way of speed and in many cases stability than the official bloated version will.
Why not stop opining and learn how to put your phone to its full potential?
(I know some will say they don't want to void there warranty and shouldn't have to.....that latter of which i agree with.....but if your afraid of rooting and flashing why would you be @ XDA?)

I get kinda tired of seeing this same response in here. There's a lot more to this place than just ROM flashing and rooting. I have found a ton of info, mods, apps and upgrades in here for my Incite, Tilt 2 and now my Captivate and have never flashed a ROM on either of them. There is so much more to XDA than just cooked ROMs and insisting otherwise is just ignorant.
When you rule out modes that require a rooted device....probably 90% of whats posted in the forum involves a process that "voids" your warranty.
If someone wants froyo so badly they should install it. It is available to them and is faster and as or more stable than the stock 2.1 releases (+ most of them have improved gps performance).
The same people who post day in day out their need and want for froyo will move on to do the same thing about gingerbread within 24 hours of having their official froyo while most of the visitors here will already be running gingerbread courtesy of the rich development community @ XDA.
Do i think its stupid that it takes them so long to push and official release....yep...but it seems to be an issue that has been a problem more for android as a whole than for just samsung or att. The same thing that make android great the open nature and a variety of handsets is the same thing that hinders prompt updating of new firmware. I see it being the biggest thing that could hurt android in the long run. I think it also one of the reasons we have a much weaker selection of high-end games for android devices. The gaming potential of the galaxy s line-up is much greater than the iphone but developers seem hesitant go all in to develop for the platform.

The late releases are going to plague any developer they always have and always will. All we can do is hope its a quality one so we don't have to downgrade till they fix the new bugs. Galaxy s is a fairly new line compared to the iPhone and while superior its going to take a while for big game developers to get there feet wet. They haven't had as much time support or desire to try something new when they have there old faithfuls. I do think android is a lot better that iPhone speaking from experience on all platforms but there is pros and cons coming from development and Apps on both sides.

AT&T reps...

Well I went to a device service center to exchange my phone for random shutdowns. My phone was running stock and unrooted. When I gave it to the rep to spent about 10 minutes looking at the phone information under the settings menu. He finally look at me and told me that I voided the warranty of the phone. I was like wtf? Then he claimed that KB1 wasn't official and that his computer only showed that jh7 was the only official release... Then he went back to my home screen and claimed that my adw launcher also showed a custom rom...
I kept trying to tell him that kb1 was official and I even turned off the launcher. He was getting pissed and trying to make it seem like he was going out of his way to let me slide. Finally got him to get another phone out of the back and load it and and check the about phone settings... and those phones come loaded with froyo already. He still tried to play it off like he was doing me a favor though. I was like oh crap hes gonna put a mark against my account or something.
What was also funny was that his personal phone was a droid x and he was bragging about how he has a leaked gingerbread rom on it...
So does anyone else have any good atnt stories?
i would talk to his manager. AND call AT&T customer support. get pay-back in dollars and accessories.
Yeah, you really should have told him that you'll be back, then driven your car through the front of the store.
He finally honored my replacement in the end. But like I said he tried acting like he was doing me a favor. I wondering if he put a note or something on my account claiming that my warrenty is voided. Is there anyway to check?
I remem when I got mine replaced. It was because it wouldn't go into recovery at all with button combo. I think this was before the fix, and even before the leaked froyo. I needed recovery to root and install oclf. The guy replaced without any questions asked. But of course he knew exactly what I was trying to do and had even rooted his too

As per AT&T's terms of contract, he IS in fact doing a favor to u. Once u load any custom, u have ur warranty voided. U should always revert to stock before u take the handset to AT&T store, in case u have custom rom on it.
I don't think he would've put anything like that on ur account. Cos had he put a note like that, he wouldn't have exchanged ur phone.

Yeah, what PirateGhost said, he wasn't doing him a favor, just being a **** for the sake of being a ****. Probably gets his rocks off bullying customers because he thinks he's a big tech guru by running a gingerbread leak and raging that he has a desk clerk job instead of some engineering position he thinks he deserves.

there is really no way to getting around bad customer service issues. Sadly only thing we can really do is inform their managers and even that doesn't work out as planned since their more focused on protecting their employees than listening to their customers

Lololol sounds like something I would say
Yah the only time the phone was ever rooted was to flash plumbobs gps fix. That was awhile back. The phone was odin'd back to stock and sent to samsung for repair gps/wifi issues. When I got the phone back from them they loaded 2.2 on it. Since I received it back from samsung I didn't do a thing to it and kept it stock... The phone then developed shutdown issues so I took it to my device center and thats when this started.
It's just that the atnt service center rep didn't know/believe that kb1 was a official version of android for the captivate and he was giving me a hard time about it and my adw launcher. Telling me that my warranty was voided and how the only thing he could do was give me a new battery blah blah blah. He also said that the adw launcher was classified as some form of superuser... lol (He took my phone and showed it to me and he flicked thru my home screens and app menu and kept saying yep this is a custom rom)
It's just funny cause after we gotten the facts straightened out (made him pull a captivate off the shelf and boot it up and look at the phone information) he goes on to show off his droid x with some leaked gingerbread rom....
what a douche. did you call him a douche because i would have called him a douche.

the guy was flat out lying to you or mis-informed either way ATT customer support does not give a crap about protecting a bad store rep. his manager maybe. but corporate NO WAY. then he goes on to show you his voided device? if i was his manager, i would fire him.
why is the att rep on a verizon plan? doesnt att give employee plans? i find it hard to believe that there is a benifit for him to buy a verizon phone. i havent seen a single area that i cant get service and verizon does. i know such an area must exist but there are also plenty of areas that the reverse is true.
It's always the one that "has a leaked rom" on their phone that tries to screw you over in the stores. I've had it happen to me before, don't worry just talk to another store/rep if that ever happens.

Two year contract + new(ish) job at ATT = might as well wait it out?
I've had AAA Plus for 20+ years and never once did I pay for it. I've been on my parent's AAA plan since I was a kid. They've always just kept me on it, and they won't take my money when they make me come pick up my new card every year. After a while I quit offering to reimburse them.

I hate the Altamonte store! They're idiots in there. I went in there once with a question about my e71x and a rep basically just tried to shoo me away to drive down the street to the warranty/repair center by Publix...I had to insist that he help me- it's a good thing I did because, as it turned out, warranty would have just made me to drive back.

[Q] Not Complaning, just curious: 1 touch root?

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the Evo Shift doesn't have it as easy as a lot of other phones. I have NEVER had succesful root (temp or perm) on this phone using a "One Touch" solution like Visionary+, Ginger Break, or z4 Root.
Can anyone explain why that is? What did they do SO differently on this phone, that makes us the ones that have to jump through all of the hoops?
NuAngel
Because you didn't code it.
Or vicodan, he's on gingerbread and didnt bother to read that none of them work or that you need to be in airplane mode on froyo for z4 and visionary to work.
Does this mean there are now 1 touch root apps that WORK for the Shift?! I've been away fro a few weeks...

Actually, I'd say neither of you two bothered to read. As he said, he's mainly just curious what makes the Shift different than other, more easily rooted phones. Stop being dicks.
I myself don't have a good answer to the question but I'm tired of seeing so many people harrassed just for asking questions. If you don't want to answer the question, then say nothing.

I'm glad we don't have one touch root. I used it on the droid and felt stupid for using it.
Not trying to be a ****, people need to develop a tougher skin.
Yeah. I don't know why people jumped to conclusions about me. I AM, in fact, on Gingerbread NOW - but even back on FroYo, it never worked for me. I got my phone from Best Buy 3 days before you could buy it at Sprint, I've had a SHIFT since the MINUTE I could have a Shift.
I know you need to be in airplane mode, etc, etc, etc... but I've NEVER achieved even a temp root - it just sat there and saying it was trying, and that it might take a few minutes, for 45+ minutes, once, until I power cycle the phone.
And even the gingerbread "perm root" guide says to temp root with Visonary or z4 first. I've never been able to do that. Was just wondering if anyone knew why?

I don't know anything about an airplane mode trick, read the wiki and the stickies in the general forum for root instructions.

Scratches head and wonders how you even got root seems how one of the instructions to perm root your phone was to put it into airplane mode after you checked the hboot and before temp rooting a second time and then perm rooting, but

Ahh. It's been so long. I rooted back in April or May with the help of some people in the irc channel.

What did they do SO differently on this phone, that makes us the ones that have to jump through all of the hoops?

to try to answer your question lol.
Its basically a pain in the ass. Im right there with you.
my reasoning is its because that companys lock their low-end devices the same way for each device because they don't care to much about them and those low-end phones are the main selling point of the company their locked the sameway they therefore have a very easy known, developed method to rooting and nand unlocking
For high-end POPULAR (key word in CAPS) devices tend to have all the attention and developer focus on them so they get more worked in, focused methods to provide an easier user expierence.
The shift is niether popular or low-end so we don't get much focus from devs (compared to others) and we do have a high end device so HTC took the time to lock our phone up good
I went through the same thing
My BEST advice (which many know is not very good)
Is first (yes put in airplane mode)
Run the temp root and perm root with VISONary i have always had problems with z4
Now run the temp root, if it fails to work and doesnt reboot thats fine
now reboot manually
and try it again
and keep rebooting and trying
I eventually got it to take lol

Called at&t CS to get a replacement and Denied

my hox has the led bleed problem so i tried to get a new one since im still in my 30day exchange. no one in miami has one so i was told to call CS and try to get it replaced after 30 min of being transfered from department i get to someone trying to get me a replacement and then spoke to a supervisor whom told me the manufacture is calling back these devices and at&t is stoping the sales till further notice. the only options i have is stay with the phone and deal with it or send it back and get a refund. this sux the phone is GREAT im an iphone convert and now i need to move back . has anyone else herd this or does anyone have connections with at&t to see if there is any validation. i dont really want to go back to the iphone... ive been spoiled with the hox.
Yep, was told the same thing. They are basically not selling this phone for the near future. No exchanges or sales. I would hold off for the Galaxy S3 anyways.

Wifi mainly. Also, I am one of the unlucky bastards stuck on 1.85 without root or an unlocked bootloader. Sadly I do love the One X, but these two issues are killer to me.
Mine hasn't been rooted or updated. Doesn't reboot or anything like my last ones but do have some battery discharge issue. If the phone is turned off for a few days battery is dead when turned back on. All 5 of my One X's did the same thing though. I had to do alot of returning to get a good one but am just giving up on this phone. Loving my Galaxy Note more.
Anyone want to buy it before I return it? $500.
I'm forcing my exchange now over the phone. I processed an exchange LAST week and today I received a package for a refurbished iPhone 4 8 gig. Not even a 4S wtf? I was pretty pissed so now I'm on hold. They're offering a free Bluetooth headset for the inconvenience. Will update later.

But this is HTC's flagship device. Do we really think they are going to let ATT just call it quits? I'm inclined to think not. Maybe this is just confusion over the slowed sales due to many models being held up at customs? No offense to ATT's CSRs, as they've always been very helpful for my preexisting issues or account questions, but they've never seemed to have any idea of things to come, nor have they led onto anything if they did know in the first place. And I really mean that in the most genearl sense. I get way better info online and from well-connected sales rep (hard to find) at the stores who are in good with regional manufacturer reps.
hmm, all this talk has me nervous. I have until this Sunday to return the phone within my grace period and I am afraid if the phone is pulled, then the future looks very bleak for any development or support. I don't want to be stuck with what could be an excellent phone for the next 2 years with practically no support.
This is HTC's flagship phone, I can't see it just being yanked permanently off the shelfs??

We need more people contacting AT&T and confirming that this phone will no longer be sold and that it will be discontinued. If this is the case I am returning the phone to Amazon this instant.
I called yesterday. There was nothing in the csr system about the hox being discontinued.

I really hope it doesn't get discontinued. I had a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon but I couldn't deal with the purple discoloration of every device I looked at (f'n Pentile AMOLED) and terrible battery life. So I switched carriers for the One X hoping for an eventual Cyanogenmod ROM.
If development stops because the phone gets pulled, I don't know if I'd want to keep it. On one hand, it satisfies the geek in me to have something that was only sold for a short time, thus being "rare", on the other, I really couldn't deal with using HTC Sense forever.
UPDATE: I just called and the representative said that they've discontinued taking orders but they have no information on whether the device itself was being discontinued or not. She did see on her computer (in AT&T's system) that there's a customs delay, so they had to stop taking orders until it clears.
UPDATE 2: I just called HTC. A customer relations person called me back and told me that the One X is not being held at customs, and that the only reason it's backordered/out of stock is because they were ordered over capacity. I asked if they'll be sending more to AT&T any time soon and she said "Oh, absolutely."
She also asked me where I heard that from, I didn't mention XDA, but I told her that an AT&T rep told me that they're not taking orders for the One X because they're being held at customs. Again, she asserted that they're not being held at customs, and proceeded to tell me that she will have to communicate with AT&T to clear that up.
I tried to press 4 during the call (Google Voice) to record it, but it didn't work.
Call them yourself. Record the call if you can and throw it on Vocaroo: http://www.htc.com/us/contact/contact-us But I'm pretty sure for legal reasons, you'll need to ask if you can record them before you do it!!!!!
You'l most likely be transferred to a voice mail and receive a call back within a few minutes
Last edit: I just wanted to add that it was really cool of her to get back to me. I'm not a blogger or anyone important at all. Just one of millions of customers, and she took time out of her day to call me back. That's pretty cool.
Why would this phone get discontinued? Wouldn't HTC just release a software update to get past the apple troll patents?
The one xl isnt exclusive to the US. There are other countries getting this phone, albeit only lte capable countries which there aren't too many (Canada, Australia, Germany).
Edit: just noticed the late radio bands are slightly different, pretty sure that doesn't matter too much since the hardware is practically identical.
I think I've decided what I'm going to do. Return this phone and get the international. same price for me since I bought off contract.
id say its very likely they were held up at customs, or they just are backordered.
another big possibility is quality control issues (that they obviously wouldn't admit)

Is rooting worth it?

Hi everyone, i got the razr hd from fido a few days ago. It's also my first android device. It came stocked with a bunch of bloatware that i would like to remove, and apparently the only ways it can be done is by rooting the device. I also got the warranty from future shop, and i don't want to void it. Does rooting the device void the warranty and if it does, can it be reset like the ipad when jailbroken? Also what are the risks of rooting the device, and what are the benefits? And if i do root my device can i still update it with jellybean whenever it is released in the next year? Thanks for replying with any help.

Titanium Backup is a good reason to root your device. The root method I used, was an exploit available on xda, so afaik if you restored factory defaults no one would know you've rooted the device, so you shouldn't have to worry about warranty. You don't need to unlock the bootloader or do any of those kinds of warranty voiding mods.
You've made a great choice for your first android device. I think this phone is impeccable, one of the first things I loved about it over every other droid I've owned, is that its THE most superior phone I have ever used, call quality, reception, etc, are all second to none. This phone makes calls were others cannot. I have been waiting years for a smartphone that I can truly rely on and the Razr HD (finally) is THAT phone... Motorola are the unsung heroes as far as I'm concerned! It embarrases my old S3 and Lumia 920.
Also, I got JellyBean OTA 2 days ago from Telstra. Hopefully you don't have to wait but to answer your question, I got root when using ICS, then used Voodoo Rootkeeper to keep root after upgrading to JB. I highly recommend reading the associated tutorial.
Try disabling those apps you don't want to see. Go to settings - > apps then scroll to all and select the app you want to disable. There will be a disable button if the carrier didn't lock it out.

Rooting is worth it.
Before JB comes out you can download custom roms (if they are available) and most of the time those custom roms are faster, got super awesome improvements and are just better.
You can also just download stock roms (same as official)
Apps that worth it:
Titanium backup
SetCPU
Lucky Patcher
And many more
Rooting is absolutely a awesome thing.
But be carefull!

Rooting is totally worth it. For all the reasons mentioned above and many more that you'll soon read about here in the forums I'm sure.
BUT... Rooting WILL void your warranty.
Yep, but if you use your phone normal and dont trow it and stuff like that you are okay.

Ha, I agree with you. I rooted mine 2 months after owning it and didn't care about the warranty. The OP asked though, so I answered Sounded like he/she paid extra for a warranty, so wanted him/her to know that it would be wasted money paying for the extra warranty if they rooted.
You never know, some people go buckwild crazy changing and deleting things after rooting when they don't know what they're doing and end up with a very expensive paper weight, thinking that their warranty will save them. Nope. Sorry. Thanks for playing.

Here's my advice...
Is everything working on the phone as you need? If it is, you probably don't need to root it. I had my last 2 phones rooted and my tablet its also rooted, but there is a lot more management and a lot more stuff can go wrong on a rooted phone.
I'm actually living on a non-rooted phone right now, and have disabled all of the Rogers bloat apps I don't use. The phone is fast as heck and my battery lasts a good while, so there isn't much I feel that I need to tweak.
I have rooted in the past in order to get additional functions (like tethering, better signal) of the phone up and running on my carrier, because I didn't but a phone that was offered by Rogers. Unless you have an exact reason to root, don't bother just.

Unless there is something that you need that requires root, no IMHO.
The stock ROM works very well. You can get rid of 90% of the bloat without rooting, through the stock app manager. You can backup and restore all your apps with Astro File Manager, which does not require root. Saves all the APK's to the SD card and if you had to factory reset the phone, just install Astro and restore all your apps. Although, most apps should install automatically from Google anyway.
Until I see a ROM that offers a substantial benefit over stock, I am just leaving it alone... The phone runs great as is, and the peace of mind of not having to worry about messing it up or having a warranty issue is nice.
I do my rooting and ROMs on my Nexus 7.
I would think that anyone that considers themselves a power user, would benefit from rooting.
My two reasons(besides the ones mentioned):
Tasker and Avast. With avast it can hide the installation better and on a lower level.
