[Q] Not Complaning, just curious: 1 touch root? - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the Evo Shift doesn't have it as easy as a lot of other phones. I have NEVER had succesful root (temp or perm) on this phone using a "One Touch" solution like Visionary+, Ginger Break, or z4 Root.
Can anyone explain why that is? What did they do SO differently on this phone, that makes us the ones that have to jump through all of the hoops?
NuAngel

Because you didn't code it.

Or vicodan, he's on gingerbread and didnt bother to read that none of them work or that you need to be in airplane mode on froyo for z4 and visionary to work.

Does this mean there are now 1 touch root apps that WORK for the Shift?! I've been away fro a few weeks...

No, it means you should READ.

Actually, I'd say neither of you two bothered to read. As he said, he's mainly just curious what makes the Shift different than other, more easily rooted phones. Stop being dicks.
I myself don't have a good answer to the question but I'm tired of seeing so many people harrassed just for asking questions. If you don't want to answer the question, then say nothing.

I'm glad we don't have one touch root. I used it on the droid and felt stupid for using it.
Not trying to be a ****, people need to develop a tougher skin.

Yeah. I don't know why people jumped to conclusions about me. I AM, in fact, on Gingerbread NOW - but even back on FroYo, it never worked for me. I got my phone from Best Buy 3 days before you could buy it at Sprint, I've had a SHIFT since the MINUTE I could have a Shift.
I know you need to be in airplane mode, etc, etc, etc... but I've NEVER achieved even a temp root - it just sat there and saying it was trying, and that it might take a few minutes, for 45+ minutes, once, until I power cycle the phone.
And even the gingerbread "perm root" guide says to temp root with Visonary or z4 first. I've never been able to do that. Was just wondering if anyone knew why?

I don't know anything about an airplane mode trick, read the wiki and the stickies in the general forum for root instructions.

Scratches head and wonders how you even got root seems how one of the instructions to perm root your phone was to put it into airplane mode after you checked the hboot and before temp rooting a second time and then perm rooting, but

to try to answer your question lol.
Its basically a pain in the ass. Im right there with you.
my reasoning is its because that companys lock their low-end devices the same way for each device because they don't care to much about them and those low-end phones are the main selling point of the company their locked the sameway they therefore have a very easy known, developed method to rooting and nand unlocking
For high-end POPULAR (key word in CAPS) devices tend to have all the attention and developer focus on them so they get more worked in, focused methods to provide an easier user expierence.
The shift is niether popular or low-end so we don't get much focus from devs (compared to others) and we do have a high end device so HTC took the time to lock our phone up good
I went through the same thing
My BEST advice (which many know is not very good)
Is first (yes put in airplane mode)
Run the temp root and perm root with VISONary i have always had problems with z4
Now run the temp root, if it fails to work and doesnt reboot thats fine
now reboot manually
and try it again
and keep rebooting and trying
I eventually got it to take lol

[ROM-DEV] 04/16/10 | Back from the dead | Coming soon

Geek For Me is proud to announce:
Toast's Secret Sauce
From the developers who brought Eclair (Android 2.x) to the CDMA Hero
I'm confused about this post/rom
A lot of new HeroC users out there don't even remember a 2.1 before damage got the leaked RUUs. I actually ported it to the Hero way back in November of 2009 from a copy that had been ported to the GSM Hero. Myself, toast, and a couple of others then spent MONTHS getting everything working. We started with basically nothing at all and ended up with a near fully functioning rom, through the use of real dev work. Check the older posts at http://geekfor.me/android21/ for info on the previous work. I also went ahead and made this post using the old thread so that maybe people can get some history on it.
Can you tell me more about this?
I'll be staying tight lipped for the moment but what I will say is that this is marked as a dev rom for a reason. It is not going to be a 100% functioning rom and is made more as a proof of concept, and for fun. It is not meant as a daily rom for most users.
When will this be released?
Coming soon to a phone near you. We're still working on hammering out some bugs, and adding some features.
And a little teaser (benchmarks) :

Just make a nandroid backup and you'll be fine. lol. This doesn't modify anything that could possibly brick your phone. But yea... it's pretty to look at but doesn't do anything just yet. I can probably get wifi working and such but I don't know what my chances are of making it work on Sprint. I don't know if it even ties in to our radio.img at all and if it's compatible with 2.1.
Many thanks!
I will be flashing this momentarily but wanted to ask you generally what is involved in "porting" a ROM from GSM to CDMA. My naive understanding is that 1.6 and up are GSM/CDMA capable.
And I must admit (with a developer background in many flavors of *nix, particularly the open source varieties of Linux and BSD) I'm not sure I understand why Android is so device specific. Is it the device drivers for individual hardware, the radio? Chip/CPU architecture?
Thank again for the work, I'll let you know what happens!
Hey Flipz.
have you tried to load the modules from the 1.5 rom. ie the radio and all other pertinent modules for the cdma radoi
Tried it can't get past the boot screen. Waited for a crazy long time. You didn't say to do a Nandroid backup in your post, What should I do now? Just kidding, you know it's going to seriously be asked in a couple of posts though.
from the sceen shots i can most likely tell what the major issue is.(i.e. 2.6.27) lol... but hell yeah man!!! thanx fixin to flash now.
If you wait a seriously long time and it won't boot then you likely didn't do a wipe before you flashed the update. It will fail horribly and just keep looping on the startup screen.
I haven't done a single thing yet to try and get anything working other than getting it booting. I wanted to post it up here ASAP.
ah I didn't see to do a wipe, if I wipe the nandroid on the sdcard stays right? I assume it does but I'm going to copy to the copter to be safe. Thanks.

Yup. The wipe pretty much just clears from info from /data/. But having multiple backups is always a good thing!
ok man great... it boots. it takes a minute but it boots. ur right nothing works. maybe bluetooth but all i did was scan for devices. it scanned. but i dont got a bt device. anyhow im gonna charge my phone a bit an try to debug some issues. phone is dead so i gotta wait a few. but thanx again man... good work
oh yeah it booted after a wipe, I feel dumb, it's kind of cool to play arround. the two things I really wanted to see from the 2.1 where the pinch to zoom home screen trick that will zoom out and show all 7 homescreens at once. And the Landscape home screen. Oh well it's really cool to check it out on a CDMA device now after all the GSM brothers have been having fun.

[Fake-Unrooted-ROM] Why unroot? Flash this! Stock Froyo.

Returning your Evo anytime soon? Why unroot when you can just flash a completely plain Jane looking stock Froyo ROM that's lacking the Superuser apk? The geniuses over at Sprint or Best Buy will never be able to tell the difference. This is netarchy's HTC OTA Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, build 3.36.651.6 (Rooted) Odexed ROM, the -only- thing that has been changed is the removal of the Superuser Permissions apk.
Wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache, then flash.

Yeah, this ROM totally preys on the not so clever reps that work at stores like Sprint and Best Buy. No offense, of course. I actually returned my last Evo with a stock ROM that was still sporting the Superuser Permissions apk. They didn't catch that.10 times out of 9 they're not going to even know about rooting or what to look for to spot a rooted device.
Anyone working for them that wouldnt catch this, wouldnt catch a non stock rom no matter what it is. Anybody actually looking to tell if a phone is rooted will look for a custom recovery.

I highly doubt any rep is looking for a custom recovery, although that would be the thing to look for. But seeing the Superuser Permissions app might cause a rep to grow a brain and do some investigating, which could potentially lead to some problems returning your Evo, if you are in fact, returning it rooted. I'm just trying to circumvent some hassle by eliminating that possible hitch.
Sheer genius.

LOL even with a custom rom and boot screen Sprint took my phone back. Who cares? rooting doesn't effect your hardware so why would they even care? Flashing an official RUU undoes rooting for the most part anyway (minus unrevoked forever)

1st of all EVERYONE I worked with at Sprint and half of the upper management have rooted Evos, even rooted Epics. We know, we're not idiots you idiot
The reps aren't really going to care because the account that device was active on can get charged up to full retail for the new device if the Evo is discovered to be rooted. Most of the time these phones get recycled as refurbished replacement phones, and there's a simple check (a couple actually) to determine root, with or without Superuser. Got an e-mail about this from our service technicians about going into the About Phone section and how the phone betrays itself.
That and the bootloader screen shows S-Off at the top for most rooted Evo's which takes all of 60 seconds to check.
On a side note, it really is unlikely Sprint is wasting man-power checking every single evo coming in, especially with everyone trading up to the 3D. Just throwing it out there, YOU REALLY SHOULD JUST UNROOT the damn thing it's easy and could (possibly) spare you north of $450. I mean really, even if it takes an hour you theoretically made almost $500 an hour.

I'm pretty sure this method is intended primarily for those taking their phones in for service.
When actually sending the phone back to Sprint (to take advantage of their insurance, for example), a full unroot should always be done. That's where the technicians will be more likely to poke and prod.

I really hate this phone right now!!!!!!HELP

Hello,
I recently switched to my first android phone from an iphone and I hate it right now. I am currently trying to update it to 2.3.3 but it won't work for some reason. The phone shuts off randomly, and the wifi connects but does not send data to my phone so i can't use wifi. Above all of that, the phone is really plain, and is does not appeal. Can somebody PLEASE help me with any of the above problems, and maybe even show me some UI's that would be good for this phone, like a Sense for it. I know nothing about android and I am really frustrated, and do not want to sell this phone.
Root it. Download mui rom and use iphone theme. Works well and looks great.

You shouldn't need wifi to update. Download all the files on your computer and flash them using nvflash.
The best thing to do is root, than download MIUI and youll love the phone, you can make it look exactly like an iphone 4s , or anything you ever wanted to
Yup, root it and you can do miracles with miui and even cm7....

I too came from an iPhone, and I had the wifi problem on the g2x too, where it's connected, but it's stuck. I was extremely frustrated, and want to throw the phone against the wall.
I ended up rooting it (super easy to do), after you've done that, you'll be able to flash a new ROM on to it. I use Weapon, which is based on the stock LG gingerbread release. It's super stable, fast, and best of all, no WiFi problem, at all!
I don't get this, if the developers on XDA can crank out these nice ROMs that are more battery efficient, fast, and with less issue, what is wrong with LG? You'd think that they have more resources than the developers here!
In our family there's 3 G2x phones, none rooted since everyone likes the vanilla Android that came on them. All 3 have been rock-stable with no issues with wifi, etc. Not the greatest build quality, but so far trouble-free. No significant complaints or need to root for ordinary use.
From HTC G2 with xda premium.
You don't even need to root. Just nvflash ClockworkMod and flash a custom rom.
(This is the right way to do it)
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV
Wait a minute...did you buy this phone new? If you did, from where? My ex-wife and I both got this phone in early September and it came with 2.3.3 pre-installed. If you don't want to deal with ROMs, just take it to a t-mo store (and actual store, NOT a kiosk...all the idiots work in kiosks, lol). They should have no problems doing it for you.

Exactly. The updater killed my phone too and I'm not a noob (am I? lol)
LG has a crappy updater. I ended up having Tmobile replace my dead one (THANKS LG!) with one that was pre-updated.
Probably what I would recommend doing if you don't feel like taking the 15% of successfully flashing GB on it the right way. Mine was stuck on the LG Updater Screen. Just call Tmobile and say it won't do anything. The LG updater app said it was already running the latest version and wouldn't continue.
It's a known problem. Then BAM... new phone with it pre-installed. The full update process takes HOURS. Transfers at super slow speeds. LG Updater also changes the version numbers on your phone FIRST, so if it fails, it's hosed.
Rule of thumb LG, never change version numbers until the phone was successfully flashed and verified.
The G2x is geared more for seasoned Android vets, so it isn't anyone's fault. It's a sweet phone though. I did successfully fix the "Update of Death Loop" aka UoDL by doing a FULL NVFLASH install of GB. The how-to is in this forum somewhere.

[Q] Samsung Illusion SCH-I110

Ok, So I don't really see anything in the dev field for this phone. I have been trying to get root on it for close to a month now...
Now, Forget root for just a second. I noticed something on this device. There are 2 different download modes.
When I boot to download mode using Vol-down+power, It goes to a screen warning about installing a custom os, blah blah. It asks if I want to continue (Vol-up) or if I want to cancel and reboot (Vol-down). Hit Vol-up and it takes me to download mode. The one thing I find strange about this download mode is that it says "ODIN Mode".
When I use a USB jig that I purchased from MobileTechVideos, It skips the warning screen and goes directly to download mode, only thing different is that it says "Factory Mode".
These are 2 completely different modes.
I am curious to see if there is anybody willing to take on development with this device. I unfortunately do not have the skill whatsoever to do it, but I can help with it, if instructed on the proper procedures. I would love to see some stuff come out for this phone.
Also, on another note, if I am not mistaken, this phone also has the same processor that the Samsung Galaxy S series of phones have leaving it open for the Unbrickable Mod. I have torn into the device and believe that I have found the OM resistors, but again do not have the means of telling which one is what.
Anyways, I seriously see some potential with this device. I have seen many people post asking for root, ROM's, and all kinds of stuff involving this phone, on many forums to include this one, and all have been brushed off and ignored. It is sad really.
If I posted in the wrong section, I am sorry, There is no sub-forum for this phone.
Anyways, cheers!!

It just looks like you've discovered both recovery and download mode. I have an S2 and they're both standard, out of the box. With the S2 you hold the home button and volume up while turning on for recovery mode, and the home button and volume down while turning on for download mode. Sounds like what you've experienced.
Other than that, I'm sorry but I don't see a question there.
Development will only come for the device if developers get interested in it. If none of the developers on xda have it then no-one will do anything for it.
If you're requesting a forum for the specific device, then there's a thread for that, which is obviously the best place to make the request so it gets seen and heard...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416406
If you've got any specific questions about the device then it's always worth asking, despite the lack of a specific forum. There will be other members with the same device, and then there's always the fact that most things are common from device-to-device, within a common manufacturer.
Good luck

Good luck

Oh, I forgot to mention, there is also a separate recovery mode. Similar to what you normally find on a stock Galaxy S phone. It is reached by holding both Vol-up/down and power. Same as Galaxy S devices.
I did not know that there was a request thread, so thanks for the link.
Also, Myself, and other members have asked quite a few questions about the device, like ways to root. All have been ignored. I'm not one to complain, but you would think someone would at least say that they don't know, or something. lol
I was thinking the same thing. Seems to be no way to root this phone and worse... no developers have said why it can't or can be done. Its like this phone doesn't exist :-(

I think it is a great little phone, but it would be so much better with at least root on it. Also, from my investigating, the development potential for ROM's would be really awesome.
A variant of this phone called the Samsung Vibrant (720C ?) is being offer for sale us by American Movil / Walmart Straight Talk MVNO (for VZW network). I wonder when someone will be figure out how to root it .
I thinkt he straight talk version of this is called the Proclaim (s720c)
Would also love to spark some interest in the root of this device. others have stated the oneclick root for all samsung devices but seems the problem is getting an unsecure kernel?
It is wonderful ¡¡¡
I think I found the oxm pads and believe that this phone has potential for the unbrickable mod as well. It has 2 different download modes and the regular recovery mode. There is some real potential on this device. If I had the skill and time, I would be more than happy to try to find root. But unfortunately, that is impossible for me. Is there a dev that is willing to look into root for this?
I want to root when I get this, I don't wanna downgrade from my dual core Tegra 2 beast but I have to.... prepaid verizon is better coverage than us cellular.... but verizon plan I would have to pay 400 down I can't afford so prepaid I go

I am also interested in any progress on this phone.
I have the straight talk version S720C Samsung Proclaim which runs on Verizon service.
I assume that once a root for the paid Verizion is working that it should work as well on the Proclaim

It's brand new... And awesome! (for those of us in the boonies at least) Going to replace my wife's feature phone... Will wait to see if it ever gets root for a technophile like me (or perhaps a better phone down the road)

[Q] Stuck on [RUU]WP

I am currently using HackAce to root my Inspire 4g.
At first it didn't work, so I tried again after fixing my USB cord problem. I wasn't using mine, I accidently grabbed my friends. Now I am stuck on [RUU]WP,radio,95 and I've been stuck on this for a while now. My phone currently shows the black HTC screen with the green loading bar that is currently stuck about 3/4ths of the way. I've read the manual I think a thousand times and can't seem to find the answer to this.. or am I over looking it out of frustration.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem or should I just leave it?

You can go there, which is a few post below yours, and if you continue scrolling down you may find a few similar to yours.
But before heading to the irc channel, see if you can find your issue.
Sorry I couldn't be more of help, not too familiar with those kinda problems.
One last thing, if you can't find your issue here in the inspire, you can check the desire hd forum, there are a bunch of Q&A where people have gotten stuck in the past couple of weeks.
Sent from a dream.
yeah well no one in the channel is being any help... so idk.
Have you checked the thread here on xda for the hack kit?
What I do know is that your phone is repairable, no worries there. Give me a few, I'll see if I can find something.....

Been here yet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25934577
Is this one similar to your issue?
Edit: where are you currently with your issue? Have you done anything?
A more detailed explanation of everything that you have done and where you are right now would help.
Sent from a dream.
not quite.
When my friend decided to root my phone, it was my fault the phone messed up the first time... he tried to fix the problem by factory resetting it, which I'm sure messed up my USB debugging and charge only options. I switched the cables, switched out the SD card because the second time I tried it, the SD wouldn't take. So the third time I tried this, it went a lot farther then last time but its now like stated above in the first text. I'm entirely new to this, I have always been an iphone user, so thats why I let him do it, since he did his the same way we are doing now... but for some reason, mine won't get past the RUU(radio95) part. It's been on that for about 3 hours now and I'm too afraid to unplug it.

The second link has another link at the bottom.
Now, I'm just posting these for you to find which one is similar to your issue.
Read them, don't try anything you are not 80-90% sure off.
What else? Three hours stuck in the same spot? Well, there's only one thing to do.
After that press and hold the down volume button plus the power button to see what happens.
Edit: I edited the previous post above your last one in case you didn't read it.
2nd edit: scratch everything I said. You are still running the hack kit with your phone plugged in. Read the hack kit forum. I believe everything else I suggested is pretty much useless. Maybe I ought to go get some sleep
3rd edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421904
Check this, I believe this is your issue.

now I have white triangles with !!! in them around the HTC logo...
you posted a thread about it but it didn't help me any.
First, stop trying things.
Take a break, nothing will happen if you don't do anything.
Re-read our conversation, skip the links. Find out where the miscomunication happened.
Google "white triangles around htc logo" it should be the one from 22 of april, it's about the third link, title [Q] htc logo with 4 triangles with exclamation marks.
Once again, don't try anything yet. First find out what you have.

From what I was able to understand, there are a couple links I posted that were issues you had
The last one, the google search may be were you are right now.
Read, be patient, you'll get there.

I cant even get it to do anything, not even a restart while using the down volume and the power button at the same time.
First. Explain in detail everything you have done. The more the better.
Include what you did with the volume and power button. Was the cellphone on when you tried that? Off? Connected? Everything.

Do you have the options fastboot, recovery, and so on?
By the way, you are rooted.
Sent from a dream.
I currently have no options. thats the only things it says on my screen along with two triangles in the bottom corners.
Now Im stuck as what to do. It's going to be one of several things. BEFORE TRYING ANY ONE OUT MAKE SURE IT IS FOR YOUR CASE / SCENARIO. YOU CAN MESS SOMETHING UP IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. I do know that at this point you can still fix your cellphone.
It is either going to be
-run the hack kit again.
-Can't remember what it's called but it has to do with flashing or pushing a file through....
Read the threads I posted, it might be there. If not, search both the inspire Q&A and the desire hd Q&A, i've read it in one of those.
Do a search for your symptoms, might be quicker.
DO NOT DO ANYTHING IF YOU ARE NOT SURE.
also, hit the hack kit channel, they might be able to help you, just be patient and above else, try to explain everything in detail. What you did and the same info you just posted.

Keiyako, You are stuck because you didn´t follow the manual. If you get stuck, you have to fix connectivity issues and then re run the Kit. In fact, if the radio failed, you could have flashed it over again. You are already S-OFF so, could have solved that by just flashing CWM and then a Custom Rom.
Just flash a ruu for your phone and start over. Stop trying things that eventually will mess the device.....and why do you say that nobody helps in the Hack Kit IRC channel? we there everyday and most of the hours of the day....but we also sleep, eat and have families....
I'm not that tech savvy. I didn't do the rooting, my cousin did, messed a lot of it up because he said he knew what he was doing... This is how he left my phone, all I was trying to do was to get some advice before I even touched it. Needless to say, I have it fixed now thanks to a friend I went to high school with who runs a repair/mod business here in town.
Sorry.
