[Q] What exactly is gonna happen with Wallet? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't care if you don't use it, I didn't ask you. This is for the people who actually use it.
Is there any possible way somebody can come up with a form of accessing the app in the near future? Google has dropped support for Rooted phones.
Or are we pretty much ****ed forever unless we have our phones completely stock?

Nah, personally I am waiting for my bank (Chase) to roll out their own version. I have a Visa, and would rather be able to choose debit or credit when using my phone. I think Fifth Third does something similar with their plastic card.
Basically wait until the iPhone gets an NFC chip, and watch mobile payments take off.

I have a Visa too, so I guess that would be a good alternate. Hopefully they actually support rooted users or I'll be pissed.

Yeah, wish we could spoof the root-check. Not like Google Wallet running on my rooted phone is any less secure than my regular wallet.

Seriously, and I have a bit less money and less important things in it!
I tried going back to the original and it doesn't work either

I'm hoping someone will come up with a fix. I still have $20 on my Wallet app and I can't use it..... Would still love to use it.
Pretty convenient too since my campus has so many vending machines that accepts NFC payment..

Can't you turn root on and off in cyanogenmod 9? It's in the development options. Give that a try?
kernels ; battery ; ROM ; gov/sched
Now with summaries in the first posts. Convenient for XDA app users!

supercurio's Voodoo OTA RootKeeper has that function to temporary unroot. I still get insufficient privileges..

Is it really only a root issue? My rooted stock NS4G had wallet running just fine last week before I flashed a different ROM. I thought Google was just blocking devices it didn't recognize.

So if we spoofed the device name, etc. Would it work?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App

i think wallet will still work but its not supported on rooted devices. basically they are saying they are not liable if you lose money because you were rooted

I'm rooted on vhGomez rom ( which is so awesome btw and i advise you to try it out) with matr1x kernel 17.5 and I can't get my card to hook up right I'll upload a screenie in a sec.

i thought prepaid cards are disabled for everyone. rooted and non rooted

I may be mistaken but I thought they were turned back on with the update.
EDIT! Important!
I figured out how to make it not say your device is not supported! Just move Google wallet from
system/app/
to
data/app/
Then restart and boooom! No bar saying its not supported. Idk if this will affect how it works so try at your own risk.

Google wallet will still work for everyone, its just that if you're rooted they're not liable if you lose money, so they're legally warning you with that banner. People have been reporting that even while rooted it has worked and some have even heard it straight from Google. Check out the Galaxy Nexus forums, there's a thread on it. And as of now new cards get provisioned just fine, but if you already had a card and you're trying to re-add it then you have to wait until the next update, Google has stopped that and gave the time frame 1-2 weeks from when they released the last update.

Ok, that makes alot more sense I thought my card wasn't adding because I was rooted.
Thank you.

You got locked out of the secure element chip, Google is suppose to release an update to fix that. That happened because you cleared data or removed wallet without resetting wallet from within the app itself in options, if you have a titanium backup saved then restore and reset within the app, then you'll still have to wait until Google let's you re-add your card, like me and NS4G john, but you won't be locked out. Also if you restore with titanium backup you still won't be able to use your card even though its there, you'll get a payment not sent error when you try to pay, I know from personal experience.

I use my NS4G unactivated without service (as an Android iPod touch, basically).
Since Google Wallet uses NFC, can I use it even though my phone's not activated? Is the entire handshake/exchange with the register done between the phone and the store's NFC reader, or does the phone call home over cell signals every time you make a transaction?

Data throttling removed

Update with paulobrein G2X pre-dexopt patch
OK. I did not originally create this, however I did the mod on other phones.
I have attached a file for the ones like me where 5 gigs of unlimited (oxymoron) data is not quite enough. I can not get CW to work with mount/data, so I went with this method :
1. DO A BACKUP FIRST!!!(The first time I did this I went in to never ending boot loop!
2. Download file, extract it, and place it on your SD or Internal memory. (Just remember where you put it.)
3. Go to settings, Wireless & networks, mobile networks and check everything except "Use only 2G networks". (When you do this you will not be able to access this again.)
4. You must have Root Explorer installed.
5. Open Root Explorer and go to the service file you downloaded. Hold down over it and select copy.
6. Now go to system/framework, click Mount R/O and select paste. Select yes to overwrite the file.
7. Close out of everything and go to Rom Manager and select "Fix Permissions".
8. Reboot and you should be good to go.
Proof for all the skeptics. Look at the download speed, time and battery %:

The G2X pre-dexopt patch (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051616) posted by paulobrien which fixes lags utilizes the services.jar as well. Did you edit that services.jar file or the stock one?
The stock one. Did paulobrien edit the services.jar? If not the only files removed were the 7 throttle files, so it should work together. At least mine does. I loaded his after I fixed mine.
What does this do???
WHAT DOES THIS DO???
I am new to posting but been a long time reader.

Upgrading from a rooted G1
Why don't you edit the services.jar that he uploaded and then post it here? That way, the services.jar you have here will have the G2X pre-dexopt patch as well as the data throttling removed.
OK, give me a while I will.
So how exactly does this prevent TMO from receiving data info from your device? Does this block the IMEI? I ask because I know a lot of people who've tried and failed in bypassing TMO's ability to throttle your device.

I thought back when this came up in the Vibrant forums that it didn't affect the communication with T-Mobile, it just removed the software command to the phone to throttle down. I could be dead wrong however. I do most of my online work while on wifi, so I've never had a need for this.
OK Has been fixed with paulobrein G2X pre-dexopt patch!

I can say it works! My wife has over 9gigs on her phone now. T-mobile sends you the text that they are slowing you down, however there are 7 files in the service jar that are used to activate this.

There was an extensive data throttling thread a few months ago (which I think is closed) where throttling files and other counter files were removed/modified, but nothing was effective at the end. It was the the opinion of most that the throttling was done on the TMo servers. Some posters even moved their SIM to another device, but after initially working, throttling came back.
I will be surprised if this stops or restores throttling. Someone who is near the cap will have to give it a try to see if it works.

also coming from a vibrant trying EVERYTHING to make there methods work
from:
edited service.jars
to VPN change
to signal tower change
to keeping wifi on and then leaving the wifi area
i will only say this once.....
YOU CANNOT DEFEAT THROTTLING (T-mobiles throttling)
not doubting your work but its highly doubtful this will work with everyone
after trying all of the vibrant methods and even some of my own... i ended up being throttled for 3 months straight.... they couldnt even fix it........ thats how a got the G2x cuz i was ready to cancel (they where gonna waive the ETF) and offered me a phone for the wrongful 3 month throttle
if this does work... (trust me i will be trying it as im @ 1.6GB of data ATM)
i will donate!
thanks in advance if it works
if it doesnt good try!
(im not trying to sound Ignorant but this really hasnt worked sense the G1 days)

its true... ive dealt with A LOT of "android specialist" (i use that word freely cuz half the time they dont know what the F is going on)
and every service ticket/help desk ticket they said they put on my account was sent through THEIR "engineers" they have to remove/fix it from the server to the tower..... so again... not to sound ignorant or arrogant but its highly unlikely (even though i wish it would work) it will work
So, this will help with those of us that just came to t-mo and got stuck with the 2gb throttle as well then?
I'm looking forward to the test.
Post up a speedtest result along with the throttling text.

I see that it's a custom framework and services.jar. Why do you say it's CM7?
The way the battery meter is thin with the percentage. Its an option in cm7. Its def gingerbread or gb theme....but it looks like cm7. And since we don't have any roms out its just a guess

Return the Infuse when the micro SD slot didn't recognize files

I just returned my first Android phone due to the Micro SD slot didn't recognize my pictures and music (*.jpg and some *.mp3). I rooted and Unlocked it and be able to flash a new ROM after 2 days of reading this forum. BIG THANKS to EVERYONE HERE. Everytimes i transfer to the phone, 70% of the files disappeared and some of the rest didn't play. 5% of the files played and viewed. I thought the Micro SD card has a problem so i went to buy 2 extra 16G and 32G. Both cards happened the same. Just returned the Infuse.
I like the open source Android. However I do like the way Mail settings in the Iphone (all mails in one place, I use Email alot). With Android, every app is for every mail provider (dislike). Maybe you know the way to get around this thing then i'm going back to the Infuse.
Other disadvantages are the battery life. Drained so quick compare to the iphone . The charging take really long time to be fully charge (usually take all night when you are at 10-20%)
Should I get another Infuse to try out or wait for the Iphone5? Had been using Iphone for the last 3 years and Infuse for 5 days.
I'm not trying to say which is better. But base on my need seem like the iphone win the choice.
Thanks guys

The stock EMAIL (not GMAIL) app works with any/all providers and also has a combined inbox. The app I use called "ENHANCED EMAIL" has a much better feature set and was about as close as I could get to the iPhone email and also has a combined inbox. It's based loosely on the stock EMAIL App.

I really hate this phone right now!!!!!!HELP

Hello,
I recently switched to my first android phone from an iphone and I hate it right now. I am currently trying to update it to 2.3.3 but it won't work for some reason. The phone shuts off randomly, and the wifi connects but does not send data to my phone so i can't use wifi. Above all of that, the phone is really plain, and is does not appeal. Can somebody PLEASE help me with any of the above problems, and maybe even show me some UI's that would be good for this phone, like a Sense for it. I know nothing about android and I am really frustrated, and do not want to sell this phone.
Root it. Download mui rom and use iphone theme. Works well and looks great.

You shouldn't need wifi to update. Download all the files on your computer and flash them using nvflash.
The best thing to do is root, than download MIUI and youll love the phone, you can make it look exactly like an iphone 4s , or anything you ever wanted to
Yup, root it and you can do miracles with miui and even cm7....

I too came from an iPhone, and I had the wifi problem on the g2x too, where it's connected, but it's stuck. I was extremely frustrated, and want to throw the phone against the wall.
I ended up rooting it (super easy to do), after you've done that, you'll be able to flash a new ROM on to it. I use Weapon, which is based on the stock LG gingerbread release. It's super stable, fast, and best of all, no WiFi problem, at all!
I don't get this, if the developers on XDA can crank out these nice ROMs that are more battery efficient, fast, and with less issue, what is wrong with LG? You'd think that they have more resources than the developers here!
In our family there's 3 G2x phones, none rooted since everyone likes the vanilla Android that came on them. All 3 have been rock-stable with no issues with wifi, etc. Not the greatest build quality, but so far trouble-free. No significant complaints or need to root for ordinary use.
From HTC G2 with xda premium.
You don't even need to root. Just nvflash ClockworkMod and flash a custom rom.
(This is the right way to do it)
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV
Wait a minute...did you buy this phone new? If you did, from where? My ex-wife and I both got this phone in early September and it came with 2.3.3 pre-installed. If you don't want to deal with ROMs, just take it to a t-mo store (and actual store, NOT a kiosk...all the idiots work in kiosks, lol). They should have no problems doing it for you.
Whoa not real sure why my original post was posted here. Could a mod delete this please?

Exactly. The updater killed my phone too and I'm not a noob (am I? lol)
LG has a crappy updater. I ended up having Tmobile replace my dead one (THANKS LG!) with one that was pre-updated.
Probably what I would recommend doing if you don't feel like taking the 15% of successfully flashing GB on it the right way. Mine was stuck on the LG Updater Screen. Just call Tmobile and say it won't do anything. The LG updater app said it was already running the latest version and wouldn't continue.
It's a known problem. Then BAM... new phone with it pre-installed. The full update process takes HOURS. Transfers at super slow speeds. LG Updater also changes the version numbers on your phone FIRST, so if it fails, it's hosed.
Rule of thumb LG, never change version numbers until the phone was successfully flashed and verified.
The G2x is geared more for seasoned Android vets, so it isn't anyone's fault. It's a sweet phone though. I did successfully fix the "Update of Death Loop" aka UoDL by doing a FULL NVFLASH install of GB. The how-to is in this forum somewhere.

Done with LG

LG can kiss my ass. After over 2 hours of trying to upgrade the damn baseband the tool still keeps messing up. This is insane. They should have gotten it right the first time. I'm done with LG. Notice the time lapse of my second attempt to upgrade this ****. ICS is more stable on my htc hd2. I'm pretty sure I'm now soft bricked. Good luck to the rest of you dealing with this nightmare of a phone. I'll be using my hd2 till I order a galaxy nexus. Also if you know what the problem could be please let me know. I have all of the drivers and its a brand new windows 7 pc I'm using.

Did you reboot both items and make sure you follow directions to the "T" in the threads for this stuff. Also look into other ways. And finally this didn't need its own thread lol, but I understand the need to vent, again read through the threads and you'll see people having your issue and then you'll probably find your solution. Also make sure you are bone stock recovery and all I can't remember if that was a problem or not for some.

You could try the kdz app. Also upgrading the bb breajs bluetooth in every rom except stock. I actually upgraded mine and ended up down grading with kdz. New bb is only good if you stay stock or dont need bluetooth calling at all.
I know i was just curious to see how much it would improve the device. I know its only for gps but i was just curious. Anyway, ill look into flashing cwm tomorrow and just keeping the july baseband. I was just pissed because there is only so many errors a person can take before they vent. Thanks guys. I noticed that the ics roms are solvong data drops. Hopefully it becomes more useful to me.

Dont let it fool you, the new bb doesnt help gps, it still sucks. The only improvement it gave is that i was told i sounded louder to someone on the other end than i did on the old bb.
The newer bb also breaks bluetooth unless they fixed that. I'd stay away from the newer bb (maybe that's only on the ICS roms).
But I 100% agree with you, this phone should've been recalled. It would've been 1000x better for LG to cut their losses and recall the phone than to ruin their entire image for themselves. See you on the other side of this P.O.S. Goodluck!
Also disable any firewalls/antivirus. I was having similar trouble until I disabled everything.
Thanks. Yeah it sucks because this phone has a lot of potential but ****ty support. Maybe ill try disabling it and going for one more try. But i think im just gonna stick with the old baseband.
New bb is good in my opinion, but not really worth changing. To much risk for a phone that will eventually have little support, but the devs we do have are awesome and they support the new bb. Love my g2x,but can't wait to upgrade.

Nvdia too
The biggest barrier, IMO, is Nvidia's refusal to release driver code or binaries to support the chipset that runs our phone's graphics. I for one am not buying Nvidia's stuff again.

[APP][2013.11.04] RegionLock Away v1.3 [ROOT]

Sammy, in their never-ending quest to make sure they've pissed off every single one of their customers at least once, have decided to region lock their latest model devices. This means for example that you cannot use a European device with an American, Middle Eastern, Asian, ... , SIM card. You'd still be able to use the European SIM all over the world, but you would not be able to use a local SIM card while travelling outside of Europe - which would of course be much cheaper.
Sammy claims you can use any SIM card in the world after you've 'activated' with a SIM card from the region the device is from (in our example, Europe), but this has been proven by various (angry) Note 3 owners to not actually be the case.
The region lock is implemented in the form of a network blacklist. Beware that this is not exactly the same thing as a SIM lock, even though they are somewhat related. This blacklist blocks a number of whole countries and carriers, while a SIM lock whitelists one specific carrier. This app clears the network blacklist (region lock), but it may or may not remove the SIM lock, if present. Some have reported it works for them (for example: T-Mobile US Note3 on AT&T network: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2471742), but this should be considered a side-effect.
While removing the region lock does not necessarily affect the SIM lock, various users have reported that inputting a proper SIM unlock code does remove the region lock as well. You can purchase SIM unlock codes at various places on the internet for 20 bucks or so. A benefit of using such a code is that you do not need to root your device or use this app. If you are not rooting your device already for other reasons, I would personally not root it to just region unlock, and buy an unlock code instead.
Compatible devices
- Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005 (MI7, MJ1, MJ3 firmwares)
Future
Right now, this has only been tested on Note 3's, and found working. Rumor has it Sammy will be bringing the region lock to a lot of devices, even backporting it to devices sold in the past (aren't there laws against this?). There's no way for me to know at this time if this specific method will keep working on the Note 3, or if it will work at all on other devices. Maybe the app will need updating, maybe Sammy will block this hack altogether, etc. Only time will tell.
In theory this hack can be done without rooting or voiding warranty with some device flashing and app modding, but I'm not currently working on that because it would be highly model-specific and I'm a root user anyway.
Relapse
It is not currently known exactly when the network blacklist is updated. Beware that for example updating your firmware may cause the region lock to reactivate.

As always you R the BOSS bro. Thanks for all what you are doing and done. :good:
Great work this is going to be very useful for many, Samsung should have never put the lock on the first place. We buy an unlocked device only to find it regional locked, shame on them. Do you think it will be permanent or Samsung could patch it?
Thanks, thanks and thanks for this. You are the boss.
Even though I don't need it, there is really no limit to what you can achieve chainfire. Thanks for your contributions to the community!

I currently have no need to do away with the region lock but I was feeling treated unfair as a buyer of an unlocked phone. So I'm glad someone came up with this. I followed some threads on these forums and so I had good faith that this will happen. Once I've rooted my phone I'll buy you a beer. Cheers.
Great and thanks
I don't know if I am going to needed but still a nice peace of art with thanks again.
I bought specifically the Note 3 to use it in Europe (with european sim) and south america (with south american sim, otherwise I go bankrupt with roaming charges).
I will test it. No need for root right?
I prefer to use the phone for a couple of weeks (to make sure no need for warranty) and then root it. MAybe by theat time the crap KNOX is solved
big boss of android world
thanks

Well that didn't take long. Excellent work Chainfire. :good:
Well done so quick after Sammy blocked foreign SIM cards.
Maybe I need it on my Note 2 when the KitKat will roll out for that device.
Yeppa
THX Chainfire.
And WTF Samsung: Dont do this **** again. This is ridiculous. There is no need for it. You want the same structure like Apple?

Yes, this is what chainfire was saying, but than he said that most likely he will not dig into it because it would be a lot of device specific work and he is a "root guy" anyway.
So here and now and today my understanding is that his app 1.0 needs a rooted device. And this was your question?
Best regards,

my questions are:
- does this program work on a unrooted device
- what happens if I install and run this program on an unrooted device (beside working or not, may it cause damages and/or void warranty?)
I want to know the same thing but unfortunately I think yes this app needs a rooted device. In the video you can see superuser request launching the app.
