Interesting - Vibrant ROM on Captivate - Captivate General

Day 1 - Rooted my phone successfully .
Day 2 - Hosed it up royally with a bad metamorph attempt at changing the fremework-res items (endless stream of FC's at startup, no icons, no menus, no adb access)
Since I couldn't find an original ROM for the Captivate, I started messing with the Vibrant ROM files from MS_Guru's post on the Vibrant forums
http...forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728698
Using Odin and the combination of the Vibrant .pit file and the T959-PDA.tar file (Didn't flash the CSC or Phone tar's figuring they were tied to the hardware and not the ROM) I got it running again!
I haven't played with it to see just how much functionality is missing using a T-Mobile ROM on AT&T, but the phone (3G even), wifi, and standard stuff seems to work just fine.
I definately don't suggest doing this as a ROM replacement, but as my phone was useless prior to I figured what the heck!

Very interesting...thanks for sharing. That to me is just more proof that Vibrant ROMs won't be too big of a pain to port.

Congrats on getting your phone working again. This good news because it shows that the vibrant and all other galaxy s roms can be interchanged without much modification

This is a little off topic, but damn you have had a lot of recent phones I thought I was crazy having iPhone 3G, iPhone 3Gs, ATT Nexus One, and now the Samsung Captivate in a little over a year. Mine all came from one provider you must have accounts with Sprint too. How does the EVO compare to the Captivate and N1 in your opinion?

Yea...I'm a phone whore
The EVO was the slowest HTC android I had, and this is why I don't have it anymore. And sprint network is really slow .
For now, I am done with htc.

hey this is almost my exact same story! messed up some stuff but flashed on the vibrant to my captivate and it's working well.
the only things are the volume keys are backwards, and the home button is swapped with the back button :/ does anyone know a fix for this? or if the stock captivate firmware is coming anytime soon?

Well word on the street is we got a developer working on a recovery method so probably soon. Hang in there.

bricked!
hey guys i flashed the kernel from mimocans lag fix but my captivate would not boot up correctly so i tried reflashing it. in the middle of the process my laptop died and now my phone is stuck on a screen with an exclamation point between a phone and a computer

Unplug the USB cable.
Remove the battery, put it back in.
Hold down the volume down button then press power. You should see the android with the shovel right away. Try the flash again.
If that doesn't work, remove and replace battery again, then try holding the up volume button and then power.
Volume Down + Power is the way it's supposed to work, but if you have pushed Vibrant firmware, those buttons get reversed.

neither of these seem to be working they both just keep me at a screen with a slowly blinking phone ! computer

I was able to get it up and running but alot of things are broken. The orientation in the settings isnt working. It only stays on landscape. Also, the market doesnt work, nor the reset phone option.
I was going to try to use the system dump from the other thread after I flashed this but I get multi-csc errors and assert failed :getprop. Then if you try to flash it you get an error something along the lines of its not the right hardware version.
I was going to try to root the phone then push over the folders from the system dump one at a time. I dont even know if that will work even after I have root. We really need a Stock ROM or RUU because this is ridiculous.
Any ideas?

vibrant rom
Im running the vibrant rom with setirons kernal and the jpp modem, my phone is running beautifully....battery could always be better.....the only thing i dont like is the lack of being able to talk through my headset....otherwise the overclock from the kernal and the rom make my phone fast.....

[ROM-DEV] 04/16/10 | Back from the dead | Coming soon

Geek For Me is proud to announce:
Toast's Secret Sauce
From the developers who brought Eclair (Android 2.x) to the CDMA Hero
I'm confused about this post/rom
A lot of new HeroC users out there don't even remember a 2.1 before damage got the leaked RUUs. I actually ported it to the Hero way back in November of 2009 from a copy that had been ported to the GSM Hero. Myself, toast, and a couple of others then spent MONTHS getting everything working. We started with basically nothing at all and ended up with a near fully functioning rom, through the use of real dev work. Check the older posts at http://geekfor.me/android21/ for info on the previous work. I also went ahead and made this post using the old thread so that maybe people can get some history on it.
Can you tell me more about this?
I'll be staying tight lipped for the moment but what I will say is that this is marked as a dev rom for a reason. It is not going to be a 100% functioning rom and is made more as a proof of concept, and for fun. It is not meant as a daily rom for most users.
When will this be released?
Coming soon to a phone near you. We're still working on hammering out some bugs, and adding some features.
And a little teaser (benchmarks) :

Just make a nandroid backup and you'll be fine. lol. This doesn't modify anything that could possibly brick your phone. But yea... it's pretty to look at but doesn't do anything just yet. I can probably get wifi working and such but I don't know what my chances are of making it work on Sprint. I don't know if it even ties in to our radio.img at all and if it's compatible with 2.1.
Many thanks!
I will be flashing this momentarily but wanted to ask you generally what is involved in "porting" a ROM from GSM to CDMA. My naive understanding is that 1.6 and up are GSM/CDMA capable.
And I must admit (with a developer background in many flavors of *nix, particularly the open source varieties of Linux and BSD) I'm not sure I understand why Android is so device specific. Is it the device drivers for individual hardware, the radio? Chip/CPU architecture?
Thank again for the work, I'll let you know what happens!
Hey Flipz.
have you tried to load the modules from the 1.5 rom. ie the radio and all other pertinent modules for the cdma radoi
Tried it can't get past the boot screen. Waited for a crazy long time. You didn't say to do a Nandroid backup in your post, What should I do now? Just kidding, you know it's going to seriously be asked in a couple of posts though.
from the sceen shots i can most likely tell what the major issue is.(i.e. 2.6.27) lol... but hell yeah man!!! thanx fixin to flash now.
If you wait a seriously long time and it won't boot then you likely didn't do a wipe before you flashed the update. It will fail horribly and just keep looping on the startup screen.
I haven't done a single thing yet to try and get anything working other than getting it booting. I wanted to post it up here ASAP.
ah I didn't see to do a wipe, if I wipe the nandroid on the sdcard stays right? I assume it does but I'm going to copy to the copter to be safe. Thanks.

Yup. The wipe pretty much just clears from info from /data/. But having multiple backups is always a good thing!
ok man great... it boots. it takes a minute but it boots. ur right nothing works. maybe bluetooth but all i did was scan for devices. it scanned. but i dont got a bt device. anyhow im gonna charge my phone a bit an try to debug some issues. phone is dead so i gotta wait a few. but thanx again man... good work
oh yeah it booted after a wipe, I feel dumb, it's kind of cool to play arround. the two things I really wanted to see from the 2.1 where the pinch to zoom home screen trick that will zoom out and show all 7 homescreens at once. And the Landscape home screen. Oh well it's really cool to check it out on a CDMA device now after all the GSM brothers have been having fun.

Does sense UI now work with the accelerometer, per rumors and leaks) or is that not the case yet?

[Fake-Unrooted-ROM] Why unroot? Flash this! Stock Froyo.

Returning your Evo anytime soon? Why unroot when you can just flash a completely plain Jane looking stock Froyo ROM that's lacking the Superuser apk? The geniuses over at Sprint or Best Buy will never be able to tell the difference. This is netarchy's HTC OTA Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, build 3.36.651.6 (Rooted) Odexed ROM, the -only- thing that has been changed is the removal of the Superuser Permissions apk.
Wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache, then flash.

Yeah, this ROM totally preys on the not so clever reps that work at stores like Sprint and Best Buy. No offense, of course. I actually returned my last Evo with a stock ROM that was still sporting the Superuser Permissions apk. They didn't catch that.10 times out of 9 they're not going to even know about rooting or what to look for to spot a rooted device.
Anyone working for them that wouldnt catch this, wouldnt catch a non stock rom no matter what it is. Anybody actually looking to tell if a phone is rooted will look for a custom recovery.

I highly doubt any rep is looking for a custom recovery, although that would be the thing to look for. But seeing the Superuser Permissions app might cause a rep to grow a brain and do some investigating, which could potentially lead to some problems returning your Evo, if you are in fact, returning it rooted. I'm just trying to circumvent some hassle by eliminating that possible hitch.
Sheer genius.

LOL even with a custom rom and boot screen Sprint took my phone back. Who cares? rooting doesn't effect your hardware so why would they even care? Flashing an official RUU undoes rooting for the most part anyway (minus unrevoked forever)

1st of all EVERYONE I worked with at Sprint and half of the upper management have rooted Evos, even rooted Epics. We know, we're not idiots you idiot
The reps aren't really going to care because the account that device was active on can get charged up to full retail for the new device if the Evo is discovered to be rooted. Most of the time these phones get recycled as refurbished replacement phones, and there's a simple check (a couple actually) to determine root, with or without Superuser. Got an e-mail about this from our service technicians about going into the About Phone section and how the phone betrays itself.
That and the bootloader screen shows S-Off at the top for most rooted Evo's which takes all of 60 seconds to check.
On a side note, it really is unlikely Sprint is wasting man-power checking every single evo coming in, especially with everyone trading up to the 3D. Just throwing it out there, YOU REALLY SHOULD JUST UNROOT the damn thing it's easy and could (possibly) spare you north of $450. I mean really, even if it takes an hour you theoretically made almost $500 an hour.

I'm pretty sure this method is intended primarily for those taking their phones in for service.
When actually sending the phone back to Sprint (to take advantage of their insurance, for example), a full unroot should always be done. That's where the technicians will be more likely to poke and prod.

I really hate this phone right now!!!!!!HELP

Hello,
I recently switched to my first android phone from an iphone and I hate it right now. I am currently trying to update it to 2.3.3 but it won't work for some reason. The phone shuts off randomly, and the wifi connects but does not send data to my phone so i can't use wifi. Above all of that, the phone is really plain, and is does not appeal. Can somebody PLEASE help me with any of the above problems, and maybe even show me some UI's that would be good for this phone, like a Sense for it. I know nothing about android and I am really frustrated, and do not want to sell this phone.
Root it. Download mui rom and use iphone theme. Works well and looks great.

You shouldn't need wifi to update. Download all the files on your computer and flash them using nvflash.
The best thing to do is root, than download MIUI and youll love the phone, you can make it look exactly like an iphone 4s , or anything you ever wanted to
Yup, root it and you can do miracles with miui and even cm7....

I too came from an iPhone, and I had the wifi problem on the g2x too, where it's connected, but it's stuck. I was extremely frustrated, and want to throw the phone against the wall.
I ended up rooting it (super easy to do), after you've done that, you'll be able to flash a new ROM on to it. I use Weapon, which is based on the stock LG gingerbread release. It's super stable, fast, and best of all, no WiFi problem, at all!
I don't get this, if the developers on XDA can crank out these nice ROMs that are more battery efficient, fast, and with less issue, what is wrong with LG? You'd think that they have more resources than the developers here!
In our family there's 3 G2x phones, none rooted since everyone likes the vanilla Android that came on them. All 3 have been rock-stable with no issues with wifi, etc. Not the greatest build quality, but so far trouble-free. No significant complaints or need to root for ordinary use.
From HTC G2 with xda premium.
You don't even need to root. Just nvflash ClockworkMod and flash a custom rom.
(This is the right way to do it)
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV
Wait a minute...did you buy this phone new? If you did, from where? My ex-wife and I both got this phone in early September and it came with 2.3.3 pre-installed. If you don't want to deal with ROMs, just take it to a t-mo store (and actual store, NOT a kiosk...all the idiots work in kiosks, lol). They should have no problems doing it for you.
Whoa not real sure why my original post was posted here. Could a mod delete this please?

Exactly. The updater killed my phone too and I'm not a noob (am I? lol)
LG has a crappy updater. I ended up having Tmobile replace my dead one (THANKS LG!) with one that was pre-updated.
Probably what I would recommend doing if you don't feel like taking the 15% of successfully flashing GB on it the right way. Mine was stuck on the LG Updater Screen. Just call Tmobile and say it won't do anything. The LG updater app said it was already running the latest version and wouldn't continue.
It's a known problem. Then BAM... new phone with it pre-installed. The full update process takes HOURS. Transfers at super slow speeds. LG Updater also changes the version numbers on your phone FIRST, so if it fails, it's hosed.
Rule of thumb LG, never change version numbers until the phone was successfully flashed and verified.
The G2x is geared more for seasoned Android vets, so it isn't anyone's fault. It's a sweet phone though. I did successfully fix the "Update of Death Loop" aka UoDL by doing a FULL NVFLASH install of GB. The how-to is in this forum somewhere.

Done with LG

LG can kiss my ass. After over 2 hours of trying to upgrade the damn baseband the tool still keeps messing up. This is insane. They should have gotten it right the first time. I'm done with LG. Notice the time lapse of my second attempt to upgrade this ****. ICS is more stable on my htc hd2. I'm pretty sure I'm now soft bricked. Good luck to the rest of you dealing with this nightmare of a phone. I'll be using my hd2 till I order a galaxy nexus. Also if you know what the problem could be please let me know. I have all of the drivers and its a brand new windows 7 pc I'm using.

Did you reboot both items and make sure you follow directions to the "T" in the threads for this stuff. Also look into other ways. And finally this didn't need its own thread lol, but I understand the need to vent, again read through the threads and you'll see people having your issue and then you'll probably find your solution. Also make sure you are bone stock recovery and all I can't remember if that was a problem or not for some.

You could try the kdz app. Also upgrading the bb breajs bluetooth in every rom except stock. I actually upgraded mine and ended up down grading with kdz. New bb is only good if you stay stock or dont need bluetooth calling at all.
I know i was just curious to see how much it would improve the device. I know its only for gps but i was just curious. Anyway, ill look into flashing cwm tomorrow and just keeping the july baseband. I was just pissed because there is only so many errors a person can take before they vent. Thanks guys. I noticed that the ics roms are solvong data drops. Hopefully it becomes more useful to me.

Dont let it fool you, the new bb doesnt help gps, it still sucks. The only improvement it gave is that i was told i sounded louder to someone on the other end than i did on the old bb.
The newer bb also breaks bluetooth unless they fixed that. I'd stay away from the newer bb (maybe that's only on the ICS roms).
But I 100% agree with you, this phone should've been recalled. It would've been 1000x better for LG to cut their losses and recall the phone than to ruin their entire image for themselves. See you on the other side of this P.O.S. Goodluck!
Also disable any firewalls/antivirus. I was having similar trouble until I disabled everything.
Thanks. Yeah it sucks because this phone has a lot of potential but ****ty support. Maybe ill try disabling it and going for one more try. But i think im just gonna stick with the old baseband.
New bb is good in my opinion, but not really worth changing. To much risk for a phone that will eventually have little support, but the devs we do have are awesome and they support the new bb. Love my g2x,but can't wait to upgrade.

I got my G2x the day it was released. I was so excited... All went down hill from there. I appreciate all the devs that worked on our phones, but today I ordered a nexus. I just can't take it anymore.

If you are asking me, no. I have tried them all. I'm currently on CM7, it's the best on my phone. It still had lots of issues though.

I think it's about time for me to move on from the G2X. Too many problems still after all this time. Maybe the SGS3 will suit me better.

Nvdia too
The biggest barrier, IMO, is Nvidia's refusal to release driver code or binaries to support the chipset that runs our phone's graphics. I for one am not buying Nvidia's stuff again.

Help:Is Verizon samsung s7 g930v rootable?

Hi
i have a spare phone that i decided to use.its a Verizon Samsung S7 7.0 version sm-g930v with build # nrd90m.g930vvru4bqh4.
Question is i would like to root this phone, anyone know the correct way to do for this version and bypass knox and debloating?thanks.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s7/development/easyroot-unroot-t3859755 is how I did it.

I used this page and tool/firmware and got better results for my g930vl than the verizon page.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s7/development/easyroot-unroot-t3859760
Second I was able to flash this supercool Oreo rom ,L s7, after using S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS.7z
to get twrp up,
https://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s7/development/project-l-s7-google-samsung-oreo-rom-t3837509
So I used twrp
wiped/formated
Sent the root.zip S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS's has and also the L S7 rom file to my phone while in TWRP.
Installed progect L S7' Rom and root.zip together in one function (I have no sdcard and wanted a clean install of L-s7.)
tHE FACK IS i INSTALLED THE ROOT.ZIP IN "systemless mode"
I installed https://androidfilehost.com/?w=search&s=Safestrap-4.09-B01-GREATQLTE.apk (about the closest build to my s7,; it's actually 4 s8.)
and installed recovery from safestrap app.
used the safestrap app to reboot to "safestrap"
S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS is the most collest little app and made by ,jrkruse, https://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=1949695
L-s7 prodject is A nice Splices Oreo/PIE OS, but now since THE bootloader has been Rooted, I get sail my Pirates's Phone with a boot.img and it's not glitchy as of now.
Until My little girl rapes me, lol.

Hmm... A lot of that is going over my head right now...
I have a G930V that I am trying to breathe new life into. Can I use the above info. to root it and at least get rid of the Verizon bloat that is on the phone? I am not opposed to going with a different ROM, but I never had a problem with stock except for all the Verizon stuff that I can't get rid of...
Considerations:
This phone is now being used on Cricket. Not sure if that will have any impact, but wanted to mention it... Maybe a custom ROM would fix the problem of every incoming call has "+" on the front of the number making the phone think it is an international call...
I don't believe that I am using Knox, or have used it in the past. I would know if I was using it right?
I use the Samsung Pay option to emulate credit card swipes. As far as I know, that only works with Samsung Pay? I would like that to continue to work.
Please dumb down things as much as possible for me! I haven't really done much with rooting and custom ROMs since I had a few Galaxy Nexus phones that I was playing with...
Thank you very much in advance for your assistance!

Your reply is not that recent, but...
I have been continuing to use this Verizon S7 on Cricket for a little over 2 years now. It has been sluggish since I never got around to doing what I mentioned above, but it worked. The phone still looks flawless as I have been good with screen protectors etc.
I was using the phone today and had just clicked on a video embedded on m.facebook.com (I refuse to load their app...) and my phone rebooted. And kept on rebooting, only getting as far as the Verizon screen a couple of times. Lots of Googleing today has taught me how to:
Get into Maintenance Boot Mode
Normal boot keeps me in the boot loop
Factory Reset takes me to a black screen that says "Recovery Booting...." in blue letters at the top and most of the time goes no further.
Sometimes it will now show a blue screen that says Erasing or Installing Update (or something to that effect) now that I have been using Odin to flash factory ROMs.
Safe Mode will usually get me to the Galaxy S7 splash screen with "Recovery Booting...." in blue letters at the top, but not always. The phone with usually sit on that screen for a number of seconds with the Blue LED on constantly and then reboot.
Power Down will shut down the screen, but the Blue LED stays lit constantly.
I have only been able to get into the recovery menu twice. Now when I use Home+Up+Power I see "Recovery Booting...." in blue letters at the top. It will hang there for a number of seconds, then reboot to the same screen repeatedly.
I have been trying to get to that menu to clear the cache after flashing the factory firmware.
I have learned how to use Odin
Although I am not sure if it is best to use the most recent version that I found (3.13.1) or a "patched" older version that I found included with one of the factory firmware options that I have tried.
I have flashed factory firmware
I have tried to flash the most recent Verizon firmware from here (https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-s7/firmware/SM-G930V/#SM-G930V), and most of the time the transfer says it is successful, but the boot looping continues.
I also tried the Cricket firmware that I found here (https://tinyurl.com/5nhsmeam). It was also mentioned here in this forum, but I have lost that page at this point. Again, most of the time the transfer is successful, but the phone will not boot completely.
I tried to instal TWRP recovery (from here - https://dl.twrp.me/herolte/), but it fails every time that I have tried to install it from Odin.
I am at a loss of what to do next... At this point I can look at installing another ROM if that would get this thing running. I just need it to run on Cricket (even though it is a Verizon phone).
I appreciate all help and suggestions and would ask that you "dumb it down" as much as possible for me please! I have not done anything with custom ROMS since playing a lot on my Droid X, Droid X2, and a number of Galaxy Nexus phones. A lot has changed since then!!
