cm7 nightly 54 hardware optimization - G Tablet General

YouTube no longer jitters when playing HD video on gtablet.

This is great news. Is this just for the YouTube app or for local video as well? i.e. RockPlayer, doubleTwist?

I saw that are many nightly builds, Which device version will work for g tablet? Thanks.

According to the change log, not yet.
That said video compatibility has increased, YT seems to be smoother, flash is still CPU bound and enable HW acceleration in video players (mobo, rock) still fails.

[Q] Youtube and HD playback questions

Had a couple of questions on the Youtube HD playback issues.
1) There is a lag in playing Youtube HD videos in both the app and the browser using Flash. Flash 10.2 with HC 3.1 claims to fix the browser playback issue. Does the Youtube app also use Flash for playback ? Does HC 3.1 fix the app playback issue also ?
2) The YT app has an option called HQ, but doesn't specify if its 480 or 720p. Any idea what resolution it plays the video under HQ option ?
Any takers on this
I like better the mobile site version of YouTube and it plays videos a lot better than the full desktop site version.
Both have lagged for me (the app and the mobile site). I'm pretty sure the YouTube app works without flash installed, so not sure how a flash update will fix it.
I'm going to download the latest Flash when it's released (10.3) and try it out.

That's interesting to me at least. The CNN app plays videos in full screen without lag or chopping frames, while the native Youtube app does lag and they both don't use flash. This makes me skeptical, if 3.1 would fix the issue with the playback lag in the app.

Not really, performance wise. We need honeycomb 3.1 and flash with hardware acceleration!

That's right, the 10.3 can be installed on 3.0.1, but the hardware acceleration stuff is for 3.1+
The other things this update have are security fixes for 3.0+
The 10.3 update seems to pretty much fix my Youtube lag problems. And a lot of the update might be for 3.1, but the release notes indicate it enables hardware acceleration by default on 3.0+ devices. So it should have helped you guys.
Strangely, the choppy playback in the app seems to be a non-issue on the Xoom, even on 3.0.1. So, makes me think what the issue could be on the Transformer
after updating to 10.3 my web flash seems smoother... even at 720p its definately watchable and seems decent... the app seems to still be a bit choppy... maybe not as bad (hard to say)...
Don't know if this has been mentioned yet as a workaround for the youtube app stuttering but it worked for me.
Install Dolphin HD and set the user agent to iPad.
Then when you touch play on a youtube vid choose Dolphin HD again if you get the app menu. DON'T CHOOSE THE YOUTUBE APP.
Dolphin should then load the default media player app and play the mp4 stream off of youtube instead of using Flash. Most HD vids were a lot smoother for me.

I'm working on a review of the Transformer and I emailed my ASUS PR rep.. speaking of Youtube, I asked him about this and his response was:
As for 720P+ fullscreen playback in Flash, this will be fixed in 3.1 as it will allow Hardware Acceleration for Flash, so for once Adobe is waiting on the OS guys to implement something first.

Thanks. That really clarifies it. Will wait for 3.1
OK I returned my TF at PC Richards today and got a replacement. The speaker volume out of sync is gone in the new piece. The Youtube app playback is also much better in full screen, although it still lags for some videos. Also updated to the firmware .9 and things seem to be smoother. The audio fidelity also seems to have improved surely in this new piece. I'm more happy now

FFMPEG and Android media

Hi everyone!
Since Qualcomm isn't releasing armv6 binary blobs for the QDSP5 (HTC Legend) for ICS, and software decoding through ffmpeg is blazingly fast anyways, I thought that perhaps I could use ffmpeg instead of the apparently slow software implementation used now in ICS when a dedicated device is missing.
So this is about fixing two things: HQ Youtube/IMDB video playback which is currently at 4-10fps and video recording.
After some investigation (and currently building CM7.2 from source), I have come to the following possibilities:
1. Use something like limoa which provides an OpenMax interface to the full power of ffmpeg. This has the highest chance of also getting camcordering to work for free.
2. Integrate ffmpeg into libstagefright directly: some files and ffmpeg configure options seem to support the feasability of this idea, but I am not sure if this still works and if it will influence video recording as nr.1.
Any and lots of helpful input is appreciated. I believe I can compile the limoa thing for Android (I have gotten it to compile on native linux and I have experience in cross-compiling), but I wouldn't know how to tie it into the Android media stack as a replacement for whatever is in place now. Frankly, I'm hoping some renaming of an so and manual installation steps would do the job (ie, replace libomx????.so with the ffmpeg-based one), but I doubt it.
This will of course have direct benefits for any device left out in the cold by the non-release of armv6 OpenMax IL binaries by Qualcomm, so help me help yourself
Thanks!
Did anyone try this?
The furthest I got was compiling the omx library based on ffmpeg for arm-linux-androideabi-gcc. I have no idea where I can plug this in, as I can't find the omx symbols this library exports (also the symbols described by the OMX IL spec/headers).
Since ICS runs flakily on my device, I'm not pursuing this anymore. I'll keep to Froyo (HTC) or GB (CM7.2), currently on the old stuff.
PS: I asked this Q on SO, with no response:

Interesting
This look interesting, I would like to participate in this field as my phone is Sony Ericsson Xperia 8 such as the cpu is armv6...

No. They use Silverlight on the desktop and the netflix app does its own decoding on mobile devices.
You should read the slimsaber thread about video issues, it looks like you're not the only one with problems.
Seems like MX player is needed for video playback at this time.
I whacked off the Sepolicy for mediaserver and mfc_device coz I thought the external/sepolicy has included them but I was wrong so (just my guess) that's why media apps get FC tho but not so sure. Anw, I restored those sepolicy locally and built a build with those file for newest Slimsaber tho. @OP: you can test and tell me if it still exist or not. Not so hopefully about the vid playback from Gallery apps but I hope youtube and camera would act normally again.

These problems still exist .

[Q] CM 12s/12.x - Video buffering/stuttering/lagging

Hello everyone.
I've been using CM for a while and I am aware of one bug which annoys me the most. When I try to watch streamed content in e.g. google chrome, MX player (hardware decoding) video stops playing after some time (10-90sec), then after few more seconds it starts playing sound but image remains frozen. I've already tried disabling NuPlayer, updating WebView, full wipe, re-flashing, using nightlies, but unfortunately nothing works. This bug appears on CM 12s and also on every nightly builds. It seems like a problem with buffer, because when video starts playing sound (with frozen image) video timer moves back few minutes/seconds.
It doesn't happen when using software decoding e.g. MX Player S/W, VLC or youtube app.
Is there any way to fix it?
Jira - bug report

Thanks in advance for response.
No fix as of yet. This is the reason why I'm back on CM11s. I can't take this bug anymore. I sure as hell hope @cyanogen aren't proud of this update.

I don't have an issue streaming any kind of content using Google Chrome, Lightning Browser etc. If there is an app that does behave funky, its Instagram. After two loops, it begins to stutter and freeze etc. This bug has been there since Kit Kat however

Try to watch 1080p or 720p video in chrome that is longer than 3 minutes, you'll see what I'm talking about.

If there's no fix yet, maybe there's some way to force other apps to use e.g. MX player/VLC for streamed content?

Yep, stock cm11s is fine. And anything on lollipop that's not built from CM sources seems to work fine like Oxygen for example. Oh and the 12.1 nightlies have it, but much more usable than CMOS12 junk

I would like to have android 5.x because I've got used to it already, also I've heard that OxygenOS is even worse.
Here's the list of missing features and the list of bugs in OxygenOS: https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/oxygen-os-issues-thread.289981/
The question is if there's some other ROM based on Lollipop except the OxygenOS and based on CM12.
P.S. I really hate myself for deleting CM11s backup..
I used oxygen for a bit and actually thought it was excellent. No video playback bug I found there. The only reason why I can't stick with oxygen is 1. No privacy guard and 2. Camera sucks with no raw capture. Otherwise it was great.
CM12 itself is great, but the video playback bug for me is a nasty deal-breaker. CM12.1 nightlies (currently using the latest) are fantastic and the video playback bug is there but not nearly as bad as CM12. I can deal with it on nightlies.
CM11s I think is pretty much just perfect all round rom. Everything for me work as it should. I bounce between 11s and nightlies.
That's all I can offer you for help man.

Cannot fast forward since 1.10.17

Hi,
I just updated to version 1.10.17 and since this I cannot fast forward my mpeg-ts videos anymore (streamed from my VU+ box). This worked just fine the second before the update.
Sent from my phone
I also ran into the same problem, or worse as I'm forced to watch the entire video in one sitting because if paused, the player restarts from the beginning of the video instead of resuming. Everything was running great yesterday before the update to the new version.
I've the same problem with TS files too. After the recent update, once I touch the scrollbar, it jumps to the beginning of the movie. MPEG2 VOB files also have similar problem, but instead of jumping to the beginning, it seams to jump to random position.
There is also another problem with TS. I can see multiple subtitles in subtitle menu, but the selected subtitle doesn't display. This problem also appears after the recent update.

Is there any particular update or fix need to be done from MX player end ? to fix the issue.

I can no longer FF or skip forward it just snaps back to the original spot. I am now using other players but I used to like MX and would like to be able to use it again.
Same problem with mkv. Always from start, any seeking disabled. I use maximum speed to seek to where I want and use slowest speed instead of pausin. Please, fix.
