Is Smartbench a valid benchmark?
OK, two things in one post...
First - I've tried a couple of screenshotting programs to try and document what I've found so far, but both (AndroSS and Shoot Me(IIRC))have generated nothing but blank black 1024x600 files. So what are y'all using to get the screenshots?
I'm running VEGAn 7.0.0 RC1
Second, I decided to try out the Smartbench 2011 on my gTab, and had very inconsistent results (hence the desire for screenshots). According to Smartbench, my stock (except for ROM) gTab at 1Ghz hits speeds close to what others are hitting with 1.3 and 1.4Ghz OCed machines. I topped out at around 3725 or so, where the "stock" gTab listed in the results page was around 2800 or so. That's a full third faster than the reported stock speed. Rebooting my gTab dropped me back down to the realm of stock (2800-ish), but I've found a way to repeat my results after doing it a few times. Unfortunately, this calls into question the overall accuracy of Smartbench's testing algorithms.
I reloaded the three apps I had running when I hit the higher speed:
- Words Free (WWF for Android)
- Scrabble Helper
- Dolphin HD with the translate, site to PDF and TabMix plugins
Then loaded up the XDA website and read a number of pages in the forum, swipe scrolling up and down through the article listings.
Then I ran Smartbench again. Back into the 3000s. More browsing and scrolling, ran it again. 3300 or so, and it's stayed thereabouts since then. I haven't noticed a >30% increase in response or overall speed, so I think the numbers are actually incorrect.
Could someone please see if they can repeat these results? Also, if I can get a working screenshot program, I'll post what I get.

Are you guys using VEGAn-Ginger using the internal settings to overclock or are you using SetCPU?

Screenshot ER (free/donationware to xda members, or a buck on the market) works, as does tethering via USB and using ddms to take a shot from the desktop.
And yeah, benchmarks are iffy.

Coming from the realm of PC testing and evals, I'd definitely concur on the iffyness (?) of benchmarking, but I've generally been accustomed to at least seeing the same skewed benchmarks from the same package run-to-run. This just really threw me for some reason. I found it odd that just browsing cold skew the results in a positive direction. Negative I could understand...

Overclocking the magician - fastest stable speed?

I've tried overclocking the cpu on my mini using pocket hackmaster. The fastest setting I've been able to use which was stable was:
CPU: 468(T), Bus: 117, Mem: 59, LCD: 59 (Mhz)
Has anyone else tried overclocking their magicians? What's the fastest speed you've been able to use?
On the other side of the coin, has anyone tried underclocking it? If so, any improvements to battery life with a slower cpu speed?
I think battery life would be improved on any pda when lowering cpu cycles. Make sure you have insurance on your phone too, I managed to kill one by overclocking.
Mine Mini is rock stable at 1073Mhz, 143, 36,72.

Are you sure? Have U check w/ any benchmark program? 2 o/c program I know (Xcpu scaler, PHM) will report fake clock value at some point.

GXmark?
I personally found PHM to be a better overclocking program than XCPUScalar.
I added manually 618MHz (124,62,62,T) which gives an SI benchmark of 329, faster than all those over 900Mhz clock rates I got by PHM's automatic settings. Some of them might be fake but some of them just gives the same SI benchmark for the same bus speed no matter what the processor speed is.
I set my MDA Compact to 520Mhz, bus:130, mem:65, LSD: 65 with Pocket Hack Master 2005 v3.10.007! It runs stable and I think thet is pretty enough. 8) The battery life is shorter but still acceptable!

!!!!  liusam! Can you tell us what program you used or how did you succeed this? Because this settings are very strange!!! It's very "interesting" for me what this multiplayer is? I think a multiplayer like this: 7,5034965034965034965034965034965 is a quiet impossible! In my opinion the max. multiplayer is FSBx4!
I set my o2 mini to CPU: 620(T), Bus: 124, Mem: 61, LCD: 61 (Mhz) , It was running pretty good but sometime , somehow it slow down for a few sec . But anyway i think the good Speed is CPU: 512(T), Bus: 130, Mem: 65, LCD: 65 (Mhz) with this setting i can see it not fast as the 620 but more stable . Anyway i just get back to the normal speed because i did too many test and it freezing my o2 now , IF i see anything interesting i will tell you guy
HI
where can i get the software to overclock my Jam and also the benchmarking software ??
regards
reo
Are you guys gettings speeds higher than normal with or without the power lead attached? XCPUScalar says you only get 520mhz with power lead in (which it did, although it hard reset when I disconnected the power cable )
I wouldn't mind trying other overclocking software if they're more successful, 520mhz is lovely to use, so smooth.
What stable speed can you guys get without the power lead in, and with what settings?
V
S100 Stabel at CPU: 702, Bus: 117, Mem: 59, LCD: 59 (Mhz)
I run whit 6 scale config. from 208Mhz to 702Mhz
In Pocket Hack Master try "fast bus=on" and your bus speed increase without problems. For example, now I have 208 mhz bus:
CPU=520 BUS=208 RAM=52 LCD=104
I use following settings:
L=16 N=5 A=0 LCD_26=0 Turbo=on Halfturbo=off Fast Bus=on
if N=6 then CPU=624 - no problem for my S110
@truedim
It doesn't work for me with N=6.
But it works with
L=18 -> 585 MHZ, SI=367 [234:59:59:T].
Any higher speed resets my device. I believe it depends on components tolerance. Btw, your 520Mhz settings raised my SI from 313 (std 520) to 322.
Silver
how to set fast bus or choose L=18 -> 585 MHZ ? i can set only 1 stable frequency which is 520/133 can u tell me how to set higher one ?
ok i solved the problem : ) i just need to add manual speed :F
520:260:65:65 gives me a SI of 373. It's stable as well.

I have noticed that the Quadrant scores are not really that good of an indication of the phones actual performance.
For example:
If you put your OS on your SD card, you will get AMAZING Quadrant scores, but your phone will be laggy as hell.
Other then the normal score with the better responsiveness.
I am currently running CM6.1.1-alpha8.2 with the patches for video and 3D
Before the patches I used to have a score of around 700 with an ok responsiveness from the system.
After i applied the patches, the interface became WAY more responsive, and the entire spica experience became way smoother and faster.
This cant be seen in the quadrant scores, because now its giving me around 500-600.
Summary: Quadrant scores.. meh, it a nice indication, nothing more.

Little OT but might help some folks; I see you have everything on ext2. Have you tried rebooting yet? My spica didn't survive reboots (won't boot past samdroid splashscreen) without going through recovery and wiping the cache. This was solved by leaving data as rfs.
Running same rom, kernel, and patches as OP. No other mods. No quadrant scores yet.

which ch33ky kernel are you using...ch33ky has the kernel posted for alpha8.3 but nothing for alpha 8.2 i have everything like you but no cheeky kernel...also if one needs to move to 8.3 im fed up of deleting stuff and reinstalling is there a way for backing stuff up for the move to 8.3? from what I can see 8.2 still has more working parts then 8.3!

CM 8.2 should use kernel 010. CM 8.3 use kernel 011 and sssMOD 06c.
Quadrant Score: 670-730 (yonip v.10a)
I get around 700 - 750 Quadrants (CPU and I/O around 1400 - 1600), CM A8.3.2 on Yonip 17a (2.6.32.9), fast, responsive, stable, albeit with a problematic 3G bug, but great overall user experience!

(App comparative) Benchmarck Comparator

Dear All,
A lot of people here are trying to compare their phones, their performance using benchmarks. Or, each benchmark tool has it own set of test and of instructions, take advantage of the multi-core capabilities, or not...
Also I wanted to have a tools to compare versions of the same rom in terms of performance evolution.
For this reasons, I started a page on my site, the principle is as follow:
Clean installation of the device and full wipe.
No custom kernel if not already installed in the ROM
Installation of the following Benchmark tools:
Antutu:It can run a full test of a key project, through the "Memory Performance","CPU Integer Performance","CPU Floating point Performance","2D 3D Graphics Performance","SD card reading/writing speed","Database IO" performance testing on the mobile phone Performance of the hardware to make score.
CF-Bench:CF-Bench is (mainly) CPU and memory benchmark tool specifically designed to be able to handle multi-core devices, produce a fairly stable score, and test both native as well managed code performance.
Linpack:The LINPACK Benchmarks are a measure of a system’s floating point computing power. Introduced by Jack Dongarra, they measure how fast a computer solves a dense N by N system of linear equations Ax = b, which is a common task in engineering. The solution is obtained by Gaussian elimination with partial pivoting, with 2/3*N3 + 2*N2 floating point operations. The result is reported in Millions of FLoating-point Operations Per Second (MFLOP/s, sometimes simply called FLOPS).
Quadrant:Quadrant is a CPU, I/O and 3D graphics benchmark. The Standard Edition requires an Internet connection to compute benchmark results and is supported by ads.
Vellamo:Vellamo is a mobile Web benchmark that evaluates browser performance on Android devices. Vellamo provides a holistic view into browser performance and stability, including networking, JavaScript, rendering, and user experience.
Reboot of the machine
15 seconds of wait time for the machine to boot and launch of the bench
Reboot between each benchmark
Of course I will try to include as many roms and versions as possible but for that I will need your help. I still need to think of a detail protocol to submit the result and make sure the benchmarks are run for all in the exact same way (no overclocking and all. I also in the short terms would like to introduce a bench to stress test the battery and have a comparison here too.
Any suggestion is of course more that welcome and the page can be found here:

thanks for this now i have a way to tell if my phone is fast and efficient
For the battery Benchmark, I've come through this one that seems to be the most systematic in terms of protocols: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.batterybench
Does anybody have experience to share about it?
Also how many people out there would be willing to help me to populate the database ?
nice info ...thanx!
Sure, no problem.
If you are willing to help to populate the database, please let me know:

and if you are willing to send me an update on every revision
The best is if you are the cook of the rom.

[App] M3D Benchmark [ (UPDATED) last version: v2.00b]

(M3D Benchmark)
Hello
I want to show you a new Benchmark app which you can almost understand how much is your android device power to handle 3d games and apps.
This Benchmark is created with Unity 3d game engine (game engine of Shadowgun) and it is based on OpenGL ES 2.0 with This API (OpenGL ES 2.0) your device can handle Advanced rendering techniques like rendering bump maps. The Cost of M3D Benchmark is 0.00$ or in other words it's Free.
Maybe you want to say this benchmark is heavy ! it might be true ! but you should know in this benchmark there are lots of trees and flowers Also there are particle systems such as rain, and there are bump maps and etc.
Most contents of this benchmark is from unity3d BootCamp Demo in another word it’s almost a MOD.
Now I want from you to help me to create it better and I want from you submit your result (AVERAGE FPS) via posting your replies (please write your device model, your Rom version also it is better you upload a screenshot from your result).
M3D Benchmark is Developed by knight93.
Some notes:
1-last version of M3D Benchmark is v2.00b(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370745&page=23 (Post 228))
2-You need Froyo 2.0.1 and an OpenGL ES 2.0 supported device at minimum.
3-Because of M3D Benchmark (from v1.10 to v1.20) apk file size (About 28MB) installation may take up to 2 minutes.
4-If you can’t install the App please check up install from unknown sources permission.
5-Screen shot of splash image is simulated in pc.
6-it's better you don't allow to your device became lock (for example tap your screen)also you can increase your device display time out instead of touching display.
7-v1.00 is deleted because of it's problem,(v1.20 is available:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21613547&postcount=171) , version 1.10 isn't final version and performance is really finalized.

[Kernel] ardatdat kernel v1.6b3 [CWM] (2012-04-06)

Dear all,
As I have already distributed the v1.6b1 (beta 1) to some (many?) of members a week ago. I have been requested to open a new thread such that I could highlight what have been changed and let all testers to express their feelings and opinions to the new kernel in this centralized thread.
First, let me introduce the features of "The New Kernel" ... (not The New iPad)...
1. Stabilized the voltage & frequency setting such that the 'stock' voltage is used without affecting OC stability.
2. As different machine's CPUs are different, OC to 1.35Ghz is not the most stable setting. Instead, 1.3Ghz will be the max.
3. Remove some of the useless codes used in v1.5
4. Pick some of the code difference from the official XWLA4 kernel
5. Add in support to read NTFS & CIFS file system
6. Switch to use the SLUB allocator
7. Disable ipv6 (unless I am told to add it back)
8. Other minor bug fixes
Next, let me conclude some of the comments from members on the beta:
1. Works fine with Titanium ROM 2.1
2. Undervolted it to 750mv @ 608mhz, more stable than v1.5
3. More smooth than v1.5
4. Not as warm as v1.5, so far so 'cool' in temperature
5. No lag, no freeze
So, welcome for more opinions, discussions and findings and let's discuss here. If everything goes right, I will release v1.6 within a few days
** Updated: v1.6b2 has been sent out to around 10 testers for testing

just got back from long leave...
got your kernel but havent installed it yet..
on your last 1.5 i'm having problem with ONDEMAND mode. it does not smooth after long standby/idle. INTERACTIVE is the best setting for me. hope 1.6 is much2 better!..
gonna test it tonight woohooo!!..
My sister's Galaxy R is using the really old ODIN version .
Can I directly upgrade like this ?

Yes, it should be fine.
Flashing the kernel every time is flashing a 'new' one. There are not any dependency with the previous kernel.
4 days of intensive testing and I've found no probs. Can someone put his undervolting stable results?

Thanks for your report.
As I think you are the only one experiencing that. Could you please elaborate more on the situation. Example: the SetCPU setting / profile setting / screenshot. Lag, how lag, and have you wipe the cache before flashing the new kernel? Have you tried to flash back v1.5 and see the situation. Also, battery drain is fast is strange as I use 'lower' voltage setting that v1.5.
Please help to test more and provide more information such that we could help in fixing the problem. Thanks.

when firstly i installed this i didn't format cache then restore to 1.5 but see ur instruction i format cache and again flash 1.6 since 2 hours flashing it runs quite smoothly now ....... in set cpu i have used 1200 mhz frequency and interactive profile but i doesn't change any voltage.......... please insist me if i have to change voltage either or frequency........
I tested frequency 1100 mhz and I must admit it's unbelievable how much boost i performance gives you clocking with just 100 mhz. I would say it's relatively the most efficient frequency. (if you compare differences between 1 and 1,1 ghz, and then 1,1 and 1,2 ghz).
Where can I find 1,6 version
Sent from my GT-I9103 using Tapatalk
u can't, it's still being tested, but if you want to participate send pm directly to ardatdat.
NTFS Support
Got my OTG cable today,
Plugged in my NTFS formatted Pen drive and its loaded with all gears.
Thanks ardatdat for bringing up NTFS support on my request.

I'm still on stock kernel, but will most likely update to ardatdat's 1.6 when released.
Is the performance boost perceived boost under general usage or is it synthetic benchmarks such as Antutu?
It was so funny. If v1.6 is not released, maybe you could all blame him for it.
