Nope. you can try and back up as much as possible but a total wipe is required.
In time is it possible to have a true one click root to root the phone. I am still learning everything it takes to do a root and this phone seems more difficult then some other phones. My buddy just rooted his fasinate, and it was easy as can be.

It's possible that there might be a 1 click that wont have to wipe data. But unfortunately to exploit the backdoor that allows root currently you need to revert to an old RUU.
What are you worried about regarding having to do a complete wipe?
I do full wipes all the time. Whenever I switch a ROM or even upgrade a ROM I do a complete wipe. What is it you're worried about losing.

This is my fist Android phone and I am still learning how do do everything. So I really don't want to mess it up. I am trying to do reserch on everything before I do the root.

Very smart. Once you get the root fever though...
The Thunderbolt was my first Android as well and I did the same thing you did and made sure I had as much knowledge as I could before I rooted. I used the root on mac walk through and it worked perfect. Now I am flashing roms and kernals like it is going out of style. I even bricked the phone loading a rom the wrong way but with the knowledge I gained using bootloader to root it was an easy fix. Once you get the hang of it, it gets really easy.

Well that's good to know thats what I will be doing over the weekend. I have everything backed up and apps really don't matter. I just want to have more control over my phone. Same here. Just wiped to load ROM Update.
There is alot of apps out there that will backup all your data without being rooting

There won't be any more "roots" that will come out. They are all done the same way. The only way you will get support is by doing it the manual way. Using a 1-click is more dangerous than doing it the manual way. (no one knows when/if unrevoked will come out with one for this phone) I highly suggest doing it the manual way.
Great to hear someone say that they are reading up and learning about it before they do it. We are finally getting some smart people to this forum

You didn't brick it...that would mean no possible recovery.

I came from windows mobile and so I also was averse to wiping cause it takes so long to setup thephone again..but not on android.titanium backup is awesome and can restore you back to normal super fast. dont fear the full wipe

i came from a blackberry where there was no backing up and no playing around uner the hood. this left me very scared to rooted my thunderbolt but after two weeks of owning it i made the jump and did the easy root took a little bit of time but worked great now i jsut need to convince myself to flash a new ROM
you only have to wipe and lose everything the initial time of rooting. after that point, you can backup everything when you want to switch ROMs and try things out. so you only lose stuff the first time.

I don't fancy a random brick! If u ask me.. the only real issue with an unrooted phone, is the internal storage. Everything else just works.
Yeah I'd love to be tryin, and compilin my own roms. And I really wanna try cyanogenmod. But it ain't worth the randomness of the bricks were gettin.
So who is working on a way to flash the recovery? We need rw access sharpish!
I will even have a go at porting froyo, if we can get this done.

what do you mean? we did not do as the tutorial???? i have flashed my phone over 20-30 times. i did the root perfectly and the brick happenned after 20-30 flashes.
there are even developers who bricked their phones. think before making such comments and better inform yourself first!!!!

Man, maybe you should first read and than not post such a s**t. I bricked mine, too, and i think i know what i'm doing. If you would know about what you talk you would see that the cause for the bricked desires is not yet adressed, and that it could happen to anyone who rooted the phone

You are easily scared
I just dont understand why you unrooted. If you have root then you are out of harms way. The brick only occurs while flashing in recovery. If you already done that - there is absolutely no risk to brick your usb that way.

I dunno man? My usb has been playing up recently. Been rooted since r1 and now I'm having trouble getting in recovery. Get a new and wonderful message everytime!
I've just put it down to my pc being a lazy f*ck! Hahahaha!! I just keep trying 'til it decides to do what I'm telling it to. Always get there in the end, there's no way I'm "unrooting". If I brick my Desire somehow, well, then I'll just cross that bridge when I come to it.

Seriously guys, i just don't know how you manage to **** up your phone. Just don't be a maverick installing any old custom rom out there, do as I did : root the phone and stick with the stock rooted rom.
I've tried quite a bunch of custom roms and their different revisions, and I still find the stock rooted one (without any of the experimental A2SD crap) is by far the most stable.

Good for you, you rooted and found a rom you liked. Other people have different reasons for rooting, and for you to simply say 'do as you did' isn't exactly helpful or useful.
The primary reason people rooted was for the A2SD. Now to be clear, it doesn't matter one bit what ROM you flash with, there is still a fair chance you can brick the device during the flash process. There is no pattern, no particular issue and no particular rom that causes the fault to occur.
No one has yet actually found the reason for the problems. If people want to go ahead and flash their devices, then fine, but at least with threads like this and the sticky, people are made well aware of the risks and potential problems.
By the way, stop swearing on the forum. Children post and read here.
since HTC released the kernel code, I thought it would be easier to revert back to enterily stock

And ? Like a lot of those who have bricked their device the 21th flash ....
Seeing as you can't flash over the SPL and radio anyway, once you are successfully rooted, it's probably impossible to get to a state of full bricking. Anything will be recoverable with a gold card and/or a RUU.
Unlike many others, I only got root because I wanted access to paid apps. AFAIK root is needed for that. So I'm running the stock rooted ROM, and the radio update, provided by Paul. I won't flash anything until a rooted 2.2 ROM is out...and who knows...maybe after 2.2 the bricking problem will be gone?

There is actually a reason found if you have been reading the threads over at Modaco, When the phone hits the bootloop in the flashing process, it seems after the third boot loop, the phone stays in a constant debug mode. I did have the boot loop after one flash, but i was VERY lucky as had the back of the phone off and pulled the battery befor the third bootloop, i truely belive that has saved my bacon.......
Have flashed a fair few times using all the methords posted on the modaco and XDA forums. all worked flawlessly..... but i too have kept on stock ROM.
Wont flash Customem ROMs untill im either a developer or the spl gets fully opened.
And socktugs right watch your launguage please all
EDIT: As per Stingerpl Suggests if you notice a bootloop occuring take the battery out ASAP!!
It is generally a good idea to take your battery out on first bootloop, go to recovery and nandroid restore. Might save your USB from bricking
I still can't understand why someone would want to unroot because of this. You're already past the risky procedure.
I guess a fully function root need some info about the current root. Anyone know what exploits was used and how its been applied?
maybe the problem is exotic hardware in the pc/laptop. i'm using a standart motherboard with a intel chipset, i never had any problems with rooting or unlocking or flashing any device.
for the people that have problems under linux, what do dmesg say ?

Maybe the boot loop has something to do with it... but there are simple ways to avoid a boot loop.
I flashed my desire several times... and had bootloops occur several times. None bricked my phone.. fortunatley!
The reason i found for my boot loops, was NOT WIPING EVERYTHING!
I have read on modaco forums, that Paul's recovery does not clear the dalvik cache, when it is on a partitioned sd card. Maybe it is something to do with the rooting process (no rw access).
The only answer I found, was to re-partition the sdcard everytime. thus wiping all partitions.
So as with any rom you download... READ THE F`ING MANUAL!! its always best to do a FULL wipe. Then your getting the rom, as the developer wanted you to have it.
So not a solution, but some words of advice for noobs! And hopefully we can avoid too many more bricks!!
I will keep monitoring this thread and will update the title if / when we have any developments.

So being new to the android system and having some experience in the past with WinMo and ROMS and flashing the 1st thing I did with my USSC Mesmerize was to of course root it. No reason.
Used z4root and worked perfect (I guess.LOL) Now have Root Explorer and Superuser.
1st question... Is there a way to unring the bell and Unroot or Reroot. *still learning some new terminology*.
2nd Question.. If I flash with a ROM (once I find one that sounds good) will it be possible to do a hard reset back to factory settings through the Power Button/volume button method. (used that one once as I installed and played with different apps to find what I wanted and needed) It shows a menu when rebooting giving a few options on reset.
Last. If anyone can point me to the Roid Hacking for Dummys section I would be forever grateful. Plans are to learn the ROM processes and work into some app development. (some coding experience and chronic insomniac).

I'm using z4root as well. It gives an unroot option at the main screen. I would assume this would unroot the phone, but I am new as well. My phone unroots everytime I put a new ROM on it, which is strange...

To unroot, I would use Super One Click. It is posted in these forums, just do a search and you should easily find it. Once you have it on a Windows PC or virtualbox, you just have to plug your phone in and click UnRoot.
Once you flash a new ROM, if you do a factory reset, all you will be doing is resetting what is stock for that particular ROM. If you want to go back to stock, you will have to flash the stock files using Odin, or flash a stock ROM and unroot it.
Lastly, if you are considering getting in to developing, it is a lot of fun. Be prepared to learn Linux if you don't already know it. Unfortunately, from what I've found in the learning process, there isn't much in the way of a complete document or guide to tell you how to do it. You just fumble around and learn by trial and error piecing what you read together from other phones and talking to people who are already developing. I have only been involved for a month or so, but I'm willing to help you out with whatever I can. We definitely need more people in the mix.

DO NOT FLASH FASCINATE ROMS... it will make you're phone barf... lol
really though. don't flash anything that isn't for the Mesmerize. I can be dangerous.

I'm still using the pick and pack rom. I like being able to choose what programs I want to keep, rather than having all or none. I flashed with the voodoo and it's significantly faster.
I'm also a former blackberry user and I agree, these phones are freedom.
If you need any help, feel free to ask. I'm new to this and still getting a lot of help from phidelt82, but I'll do my best. I save all my chat files and am making a list of what exactly to do in order to get backups going, flash roms, install kernals, etc.
I've never been able to actually get superoneclick to connect to my phone. it just sits there saying waiting for phone and kinda locks up.

Try a different version. 1.5.5 works for me but 1.5.1 doesn't.

I use SimpleOneClick to root and Uroot and it works like a charm
I have rooted my phone 4-6 times and even put it back to factory using the odin files

Actually that's how you get the mes CWM to work. You have to install the clockworkmod using the thread in the apps and dev section, then flash the fascinate recovery to finish it up. It's essential for flashing roms and such.

Just flash a stock rooted rom.
Yes all you would do is root and it will still be stock. No problems at all. But I would recomend turning off the setting that searches for updates because being rooted and accepting ota updates does some funky things to your phone from what I've heard.

You don't have to flash a stock rom after rooting. Rooting doesn't do anything to the stock rom on your phone in terms of having to flash something else.

Technically the rooting process itself flashes a downgraded ROM in order to do the root. It then flashes the stock ROM over that (at least Bubbys tool does, I'm not sure about what the hack kit does, as I haven't used it personally).
So just the act of rooting does indeed flash over whatever is on your phone prior to rooting. There is no root for this phone without flashing taking place.

Well at the very least, you want the stock ROM, as the initial ROM that MUST be flashed in order to achieve root is a downgraded ROM in which you will have no sound (it's from the Desire, near-identical phone, but incompatible radios).
This is only temporary, as long as you finish the process.
The thing is, at least with Bubbys simple root method, putting the stock ROM back on is done for you, assuming you fully complete the process.
What you end up with, when it's all said-and-done, is a stock, rooted ROM, at which point you can leave it stock, or proceed to flash one of the many available custom roms.

My previous phone was an HTC Aria, and it's the only phone I flashed a custom ROM to before getting this Inspire 4G (which I am considering rooting). On the Aria, after flashing a custom ROM to the phone, I had to start over entering all of my account usernames & passwords, installing the apps I wanted, etc. It took a long time to get the phone back to where I wanted it, but it was worth it to get the wi-fi hotspot feature.
If I root my Inspire using Bubby's simple root method, but don't do anything else, will I have to start from scratch again with installing the apps, entering credentials for all of the services I use (basically a fresh out of-the-box experience)?
Don't use bubby's. It hasn't been supported in several months, and it will not work if your phone has GB. The best and only way to root is using the Ace Hack Kit. Just make sure you read and follow the instructions.
BTW: A little search and reading would have given you the answer to your question. Not to be nasty about it, but it makes the Devs life easier and they are the reason this site exists.

Please take a stroll over to the dev section and see the hack kit thread. read that sucker. than take a moment to let it sink in, then read it again to fully understand it. Please do your research so you don't destroy your phone.
Yea thats what my friend did, he rooted but stayed on the stock rom
I know you're going to say use search function, but everything I keep finding is very complex and difficult, or the downloads are no longer available. And sometimes there's a disclaimer saying that doing it that way could brick the phone. I wanted to try oneclickroot but it doesn't seem to be available at this time. So obviously the question is whether or not there's a (somewhat) simple way to root my GS3. I rooted my Droid Incredible twice and it didn't take more than 5 steps and 10 minutes each time, it appears to be A LOT harder for the GS3, and it's pretty much scaring me out of trying it, out of fear of bricking my phone. Thank you!
It's super easy, just read and follow all of the steps. And there's always a chance of bricking your phone.
I followed this guide and it was very simple and straight forward but I was on ICS. JB is a little different.

There is only one way to root jb at this time. Bob linked you to the post. It really is not as hard sf out looks, Judy follow the steps and you'll be fine. One tip make sure you unplug before trying to boot into recovery

I went from rooting my droid incredible to rooting this phone and while it is slightly more complicated, if you have a pc there's really no reason you can't do it by just following the instructions.

Odin is really not as scary as it seems. It's actually a pretty straight-forward, easy procedure once you have the hang of it. Just remember that everything on GS3 is flashed in the "PDA" section of Odin.

So I could brick my phone even if I follow the instructions perfectly? :\ That seems like a huge risk. Would that be covered under warranty lol?? I just got this phone a week ago.
And I have a few questions before I start. Where on my phone do I put the superuser and bootloader folders? The root of the phone? Or in a specific folder? And when I run the Samsung USB driver folder one of them keeps failing. It's called SAMSUNG_ANDROID_SCH-i535. Here's the error message. http://imgur.com/Z3RRp. My device isnt getting unplugged and it always fails. I tried 3 times.
I had issues installing the drivers too. I installed kies then connected my phone. After that all went smooth I re tried flashing via Odin and it worked perfectly. FYI I ran it on my wife's win vista 64bit system tho Odin runs fine on any current-ish windows.

I installed Kies and I'm still getting the device unplugged error. :\
And do you know where I would put the folder for the superuser and bootloader on my phone?
Edit: Nevermind I tried it again, but this time I waited 5 minutes after the error, not intentionally, I just never closed the box. And it starting downloading it again in another slot and then it worked...SCH-i535 Successfully Installed. Yay.
But I still need clarification on where to put the Bootloader and superuser files on my phone. Do I need to put them in downloads? Or in the root of my phone like on my old Droid Incredible. I don't wanna mess that part up.
I had them in my external card root directory. However it's doesn't really matter where you put the zip files as long as you know where you put them when you go to flash it. During the flashing process it installs them in the correct directory.
I'm new to the GS3 on Verizon, just got the phone Thursday, was rooted that night. Granted I'm coming from Sprint's GS2 so I'm familiar with Odin, however, just as pdykstra said, it's not as scary as it seems.

anyway, I have a few questions regarding rooting this thing:
1. Besides from some priviledges I get (ie: in Greenify, Backup apps, access to system partition), is it really worth rooting this thing? (I just found out that all the settings will be gone, everything has to be re-done again)
2. Is it dangerous? Is there a chance rooting screw-up something and this thing get bricked or constant error?
3. If so, is there a way to reverse (like phone ROMs)?
4. Do I have to re-root this thing after every nvidia system updates?
5. If so, is it a painfully long process to re-root?

1 I root everything Android I have because of titanium backup. Being able to swap games to different devicesband not lose your data is worth it to me right there alone. Everyone finds their own reason I suppose.
2 and 3 it's really safe. Everything is readily available from nvidia and they are fine with customers rooting it. Even if the hardware breaks they will still RMA the device. But ya rooting it is pretty straight forward and there's several guides on it. There is custom recovery so you can create a nandroid if you mess something up. As long as you can access the bootloader You can restore the stock images via fastboot if you really mess something up.

Yes you have re root after each update but it's really easy to do. The hardest part of all this stuff is getting the drivers installed

I second this. Its quite refreshing to find a company that openly welcomes devs to tinker with their toys and utilize their devices to the fullest.
