stable root? DEVS READ FIRST POST, EDITED HACKED SPL [THINK TANK] - Desire Android Development

Ok, I'm ashamed to admit it.. but I'm unrooted.
I saw the sticky yesterday saying stop flashing. And it scared the hell outta me!
I don't fancy a random brick! If u ask me.. the only real issue with an unrooted phone, is the internal storage. Everything else just works.
Yeah I'd love to be tryin, and compilin my own roms. And I really wanna try cyanogenmod. But it ain't worth the randomness of the bricks were gettin.
So who is working on a way to flash the recovery? We need rw access sharpish!
I will even have a go at porting froyo, if we can get this done.
Tagged the topic as a think tank, in case people wanna collaborate.
EDIT
Ok guys... I found this...
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=589642
It's about hacking spls. Any dev help is appreciated

if you do everything in the tutorial, you will not brick your phone, many people have done it and just because some dont know how to use a console und dont have to be scared.

what do you mean? we did not do as the tutorial???? i have flashed my phone over 20-30 times. i did the root perfectly and the brick happenned after 20-30 flashes.
there are even developers who bricked their phones. think before making such comments and better inform yourself first!!!!

Please, stop this kind of message .... You will pay a new one to the guy who will brick it ? No ...
And you are talking of something you seems to don't know very well... Some devices have been bricked only by appliyng the 2 steps of the simple root process (without custom rom, a2SD ..) ...

Man, maybe you should first read and than not post such a s**t. I bricked mine, too, and i think i know what i'm doing. If you would know about what you talk you would see that the cause for the bricked desires is not yet adressed, and that it could happen to anyone who rooted the phone

You are easily scared
I just dont understand why you unrooted. If you have root then you are out of harms way. The brick only occurs while flashing in recovery. If you already done that - there is absolutely no risk to brick your usb that way.

I dunno man? My usb has been playing up recently. Been rooted since r1 and now I'm having trouble getting in recovery. Get a new and wonderful message everytime!
I've just put it down to my pc being a lazy f*ck! Hahahaha!! I just keep trying 'til it decides to do what I'm telling it to. Always get there in the end, there's no way I'm "unrooting". If I brick my Desire somehow, well, then I'll just cross that bridge when I come to it.

Seriously guys, i just don't know how you manage to **** up your phone. Just don't be a maverick installing any old custom rom out there, do as I did : root the phone and stick with the stock rooted rom.
I've tried quite a bunch of custom roms and their different revisions, and I still find the stock rooted one (without any of the experimental A2SD crap) is by far the most stable.

Good for you, you rooted and found a rom you liked. Other people have different reasons for rooting, and for you to simply say 'do as you did' isn't exactly helpful or useful.
The primary reason people rooted was for the A2SD. Now to be clear, it doesn't matter one bit what ROM you flash with, there is still a fair chance you can brick the device during the flash process. There is no pattern, no particular issue and no particular rom that causes the fault to occur.
No one has yet actually found the reason for the problems. If people want to go ahead and flash their devices, then fine, but at least with threads like this and the sticky, people are made well aware of the risks and potential problems.
By the way, stop swearing on the forum. Children post and read here.

since HTC released the kernel code, I thought it would be easier to revert back to enterily stock

And ? Like a lot of those who have bricked their device the 21th flash ....

Seeing as you can't flash over the SPL and radio anyway, once you are successfully rooted, it's probably impossible to get to a state of full bricking. Anything will be recoverable with a gold card and/or a RUU.

Unlike many others, I only got root because I wanted access to paid apps. AFAIK root is needed for that. So I'm running the stock rooted ROM, and the radio update, provided by Paul. I won't flash anything until a rooted 2.2 ROM is out...and who knows...maybe after 2.2 the bricking problem will be gone?

There is actually a reason found if you have been reading the threads over at Modaco, When the phone hits the bootloop in the flashing process, it seems after the third boot loop, the phone stays in a constant debug mode. I did have the boot loop after one flash, but i was VERY lucky as had the back of the phone off and pulled the battery befor the third bootloop, i truely belive that has saved my bacon.......
Have flashed a fair few times using all the methords posted on the modaco and XDA forums. all worked flawlessly..... but i too have kept on stock ROM.
Wont flash Customem ROMs untill im either a developer or the spl gets fully opened.
And socktugs right watch your launguage please all
EDIT: As per Stingerpl Suggests if you notice a bootloop occuring take the battery out ASAP!!

It is generally a good idea to take your battery out on first bootloop, go to recovery and nandroid restore. Might save your USB from bricking
I still can't understand why someone would want to unroot because of this. You're already past the risky procedure.

I guess a fully function root need some info about the current root. Anyone know what exploits was used and how its been applied?

maybe the problem is exotic hardware in the pc/laptop. i'm using a standart motherboard with a intel chipset, i never had any problems with rooting or unlocking or flashing any device.
for the people that have problems under linux, what do dmesg say ?

Maybe the boot loop has something to do with it... but there are simple ways to avoid a boot loop.
I flashed my desire several times... and had bootloops occur several times. None bricked my phone.. fortunatley!
The reason i found for my boot loops, was NOT WIPING EVERYTHING!
I have read on modaco forums, that Paul's recovery does not clear the dalvik cache, when it is on a partitioned sd card. Maybe it is something to do with the rooting process (no rw access).
The only answer I found, was to re-partition the sdcard everytime. thus wiping all partitions.
So as with any rom you download... READ THE F`ING MANUAL!! its always best to do a FULL wipe. Then your getting the rom, as the developer wanted you to have it.
So not a solution, but some words of advice for noobs! And hopefully we can avoid too many more bricks!!
I will keep monitoring this thread and will update the title if / when we have any developments.
Maybe we need to pray for an engineering SPL

Some extremely noobish questions

my dad is going to get me a samsung captivate for my birthday next week, and I really want to get the most out of the device. I have several questions that I could not find the answers to:
1. what is the chance that loading a custom rom will brick the device? I see a ton of disclaimers on rom pages and stuff. how dangerous is this?
2. can you fix a "bricked" captivate? is it possible to flash it back to stock, or does bricked mean perminatly dead?
3. how long will it be until there is a gingerbread rom? I wanted to get the nexus s, but I have to go att. how long will I have to wait for that gingerbread tastyness?
thanks for the help.

1. There is always a chance to brick your phone even if it is .00009% it is still there.
2. Make sure you can get into download and recovery mode with the 3 button combo. As long as you can get there then you can just about always recover no matter what you do to it. Key word being almost. There are also other ways to recover, look around and I am sure you will find them.
3. That part is still up in the air. Untill we get a full port. Right now we are still waiting (well at least some of us) for an offical 2.2 update let alone a 2.3 update.
Make sure you read at least the first page in the rom thread you are gonna flash for any extra instructions
so pretty much it is unlikely that I will brick it, and even if I do, it is possible to fix?

It is highly unlikely that you will brick it. Most bricks can be recovered from. The only time I have not been able to recover is when att did the OTA and it bricked my phone and I didn't know about jtag at the time so I sent back to att and it was replaced. Is it 100% umbrickable? No but i would say 99% as long as you read up first and follow the directions to a T you will be fine. I have flashed about 1500 times and nothing i could not recover from

thanks. I just wanted to make sure that it was fairly safe to modify, because the phone is not cheap, and it would kind of suck to brick the device 10min ito owning it.
ya I was the same way as you, kind of nervous about bricking my new phone. Just read up on all of the various rom threads. If you have a good idea what you're doing the chances of bricking should be quite small.
I agree (with all of the above) and there is an excellent how-to link to YouTube vids in the Development section (too late and heading to bed or I'd link it) that steps you through rooting and installing ROM. I've been there, done that but it's a great reference for anyone thinking about installing a custom ROM....nice to SEE someone do it to ease the fears.

[Q] Need Noob Help Samsung Galaxy S2 skyrocket Android ATT

I am a noob I don't even know what to call my phone shezz. Alright I am going to keep this simple. I am very very new to this smart phone thing. I have never had one. I know computers very well and have lots of exp with them but none with a smart phone. I have had a lot of trouble getting the right info on my phone. I have read a bit about everything but some things apply to my phone some to others some don't make sense. So some basic stuff.
I tried to flash my phone using odin. I did it right but it didn't seem to work. I installed super user, and I clockwork. My questions are this.
Is it possible I changed system systems on my phone when I flashed it. I put superuser on it, and box system and clockwork and I tried using odin (I might have) im not sure. I don't know if I changed the rom.
Why changed the rom? Like... my phone has all the programs on it I want and it looks and feels how I want. I have changed it a lot before I rooted it. So whats the point of a new rom which im not sure if I have or not? What else can I change with flashing? I tried installing some stuff I just don't know if I did.
I can change the rom for sure I Know but what else? Kernal? The built?
At this point should I clean the phone wipe it? Then reinstall my apps? I heard when flashing the rom you wipe the storage so do I need to do this?
Also I am using 1.2gigs of system memory then there is usb storage then sd storage then external sd storage. This confuses me? Did I break my phone arr.
I don't get how moving apps to the SD card helps? I tried but the Sd card is still blank. Am I confusing the things? I do have a extra sd card in it.
OK. What I want is speed better wifi these things. So Should I flash my rom? is there a good stable rom for my phone? What else is worth changing? I don't mind doing it I just need make sure I can get all my apps back and that I do it right.
OK last questions. If I change my mind and don't want a rooted phone can I put it back easy? I have read how to unroot but can't I just reinstall factory defaults or is that not a option to unroot it? I have backed up deleted back up deleted and so forth I really just want to stream line everything get the best programs for rooting, rom, backup, accces, yada yada. I tried looking in forums but I get such mixed info and random posts I don't understand.
So again.
Please feel free to link good threads or forums with the info I need. I am so lost right now.
I don't mind rooting my phone but I want to do it right for the best results. Please help me do that.
I want to make sure if I don't decide to flash it with new rom or whatever that I can just undo everything go back to the orignal phone and just take more care installing my apps again to not get to much crap that I know is slowing it down.
I also want info on getting rid of bloatware I don't need.
PLEASE HELP GOD!! I just want to do this right I feel like I overclocked my cpu but I have to low of ram and its overheating. I feel just like I have this great possible thing in front of me and im messing it up.
Thank you. Basic info.
Want to clean flash it get it going kick ass. Help me!

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
you didnt keep that simple AT ALL.
why do you think you need to do anything at all if you have no idea what it is you are even talking about?
leave it stock. keep reading. dont do anything to change your phone/rom until you UNDERSTAND that you are not playing with a childs toy.
if you dont know what anything is called, and you dont know if you actually rooted or not, or flashed a rom or not, PROVES you have no business doing anything yet.
SLOW DOWN AND READ. LEARN and stop trying to jump into whatever video or tutorial you find on the internet.
I have overclocked my computers before ,water cooled, flashed bios. yad yada..
First smart phone. ever. My last phone was 20 bucks and I tossed it when I was done. that was 5 years ago. I am just getting into smart phones.
Really what I want is this.
I want a streamlined phone minus the stuff I don't need. To increase my bat. life. increase my productivity, increase my wifi if possible in crease my speed. More bank for my buck. But not knowing much about smart phones I would rather just do as little as possible and then not touch it again. Like flash it (whatever that entails) with a new rom then push the optimize button then be happy. Get what I mean? I Don't mind overclocking but I want this thing stable. I would rather it be last fast then have to tweak it every few days ok? Is there a rom with tweaks already installed? Do I have to format my phone first?
I have clockwork, busybox, superuser.
For sure I rooted my phone for sure I have clockwork installed. I rooted it.
Now what? I like messing with programs and such and themes and stuff but I don't want to tweak it a lot. I want it to be tweaked. get it?
Any info by great. A website with a stable tweaked rom. a link to a how to on how to install that rom. and just be kind. I don't know smart phones. Thank you so much for any help. Sorry I know it wasn't simple. Because I want only a basic thing. A faster phone. But I have tons of questions. Thanks.
Also be nice to know what I did to it already? I mean could I of changed to rom on accident? I used odin? I don't know what that is but I follwed the directions but it didn't root after I followed the instuctions so I turned to clockwork and then it worked. I was following rooting websites one made me think I have a new rom. But i never flashed it. thanks for the info.
If you did anything your on stock rooted rom. You would know if you flashd a rom u cant accidently or unknowingly flash a rom. Cwm is for flashing roms you download a rom put the zip on your sd card boot into cwm wipe data and cache and install zip from sd card. If u download a rom not intended for your phone say goodbye to your phone. You sound in a big hurry to flash flash flash. But i do not think u realize how very easy it is to break you phone doing this. Read read read read read read trust everyone telling you this read what rooting is what roms are what kernel's are and read how too root how to install roms and the differencrs op's have in there roms as to which wil best suit your needs. Do yourself a big favor dont flash or attempt to until u have done a good deal of reading up. If u dont think this is the case browse around on xda and look how many please help? Brickd my phone? This is why i don't root other people phones anymore. If you dont know what it is and what its for then you don't need it. I no longer root friends because it turns me into there own personal tech support. READ SOME FREAKEN FORUMS FOR GOD SAKES!
Amen to that. I have rooted 3 of my girlfriends phones and my old roomates and i had to constantly fix there phones for them after they soft brickd them
your right after reading a lot more Im not ready to flash. I got some questions readings are not answering for me.
I have the firmware gingerbread I believe. and its uckj2 ver kernil 2.6.35.11
does the gingerbread uckj2 mean anything? I don't get the updating you don't have to format. Because I hate the idea of getting my apps back unless I can just use TIT recover once I get my new rom.
I know im going to do this but one more question. When they release a new system on my phone how do I update? Or do I not.
I just.. want to get this right. I know your right. I just... don't get how I find the right rom for my phone. right ver. right kernl. right firmware.
I also don't get why I have to clean my phone first. And how to make sure I can just get my apps right back.

Hmm you got 3 posts.... I don't think im going to take any of your advise. I bet you don't root your friends phone because you have know friends. Just my guess. What was the point of posting that? I clearly posted that I am reading forums. I just am having trouble getting to the info I need to read in the 100's of phone forums out there. Its confusing me with ver. kernal. Operating system, apps, firmware, built, just little words that I don't know where they fit in on the smart phone. There are a lot of abbreviation.
Anyways. Thanks for the helpful posts. Like I said I know a lot about computers im good with them but I have never had anything like a smart phone in my life. Its so new. Even though I have caught on very fast and already managed to root my phone in about 15min of searching. Im just confused about really the words. I don't understand a lot of the short hand im seeing in these forums. So its hard understand 100percent whats being said. Anyways.. Again thanks for trying to help.
that was uncalled for, saying he had no friends. however rude you think it was, its called brutal honesty.
you seem so hellbent on 'making your phone cool' (which by the way, is NOT the intent of this website), that you seem to be foregoing the basic rule of LEARNING. i understand that all this is new terminology to you, so i implore you, to STOP. stick to XDA forums and go through the basics of LEARNING what everything is.
we all started out as noobs, and we all had to go through the paces of LEARNING what everything meant. Nobody here came to the website already knowing everything there is to know, and all the info you need is already in the forums. stop asking for a handholding session and teach yourself something worthwhile. if you dont have time for it, then you have no business hacking on your phone.
heres some basics for you:

stick to the galaxy s2 skyrocket forums mostly and you will find a lot of the info you need regarding YOUR phone. dont go wandering off looking at roms for another phone, even if its the regular galaxy s2.
EDIT:
i think this post sums up XDA in a nutshell:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2031989&postcount=45
Ok for starters here is the easiest way to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=13407
Next i would suggest go on android market and download the app.called.rom manager
Install rom manager
Open rom manager and grant it super user permission choose to install cwm recovery for the tmobile galaxy s2 ( yes you have an att phone but just do that it works its the same phone)
Now u have a rooted stock rom with cwm recovery.
For now i woukd just run that until developer support picks up and more roms are developed
Download an app on the android market called titanium back up
Open it grant super user permission.. click menu then batch then find back up all user apps. Now u have all your apps backd up. When u find a rom u like . Download it place it on you sd card. Open rom manager choose install rom from sd card. Check wipe data and wipe cache.
It will reboot into cwm and install the rom for you. When finished choose reboot system now. The volume up and volume down keys is how u change your selection in cwm. The power key is like enter/select.
After your rebooted on the new rom get on the android market download titanium back up and open it click menu batch restore your apps.
This is just suming up alot of what u need to know to flash roms and restore apps. Which u will learn by reading
Once you understand those basics then its time to start flashing and make sure u have odin and the .tar file u need handy. Because restoring apps with system data can cause force closes. I just restore apps not data. And you will at some point soft brick your phone or have a failure that u need odin to save u. Its happend to all of us
You can also make a backup in cwm incase of a bad flash its called a nandroid back up.
I have all the basic programs needed including odin. I understand the risks for sure. A soft brick is? hmm. I backed up my files already however I dons't know if there on the exSD card. I see USB memory, Sd memory, and ex Sd memory and that in its self is confusing me. I will be upset if I backed up my files with Titanium back up and it put it on the part of the phone that will be flashed clean lol.
Guess im not nice *shrug* I don't need sarcastic answers. I asked for help. I admit I am a noob at this. I expect a little slack if im acting anxious to get into this. I tend to like to understand things right away and to get things perfect. I don't like my phone being clumsy. Like I said to make it clear I want to control my phone and stream line it to the way I will be using it. Sorry if I sounded noob in how I worded this at first.
Some good info and good links. I am reading. I guess I was hoping for some basic info so I would understand what im reading a bit better. The terminology is confusing me. Thank you for the help.
I am taking my time, I am reading as much as I can. Its just ..... taking me awhile to get everything strait. Need cliff notes or something for this.
Im not rushing to brick my phone. I have burnt cpus before overclocking and understand the need to know what your doing. I just am impatient.
Thanks again for the +helpful posts. I appreciate it.
I think the problem is that you've come here looking for the easy way out, the 'quick fix' and there isn't one. These people aren't telling you to read the forums just because they don't feel like helping you. They are telling you to read because they can't help you until you do. While your questions in your opening post may seem simple to you, they would likely require half a book to explain if you have no foundation to work from.
If you're having trouble with terminology, google terms you don't understand. The best piece of advice I can give you is DON'T RUSH. It's the surest way to screw up your phone and likely turn you off of android altogether.
thank you. I understand
THANK YOU. There is a galaxy s2 and a galaxy skyrocket s2
DOH! I thought s2 was skyrocket2 no wonder Im having issues. Im reading info on two phones. Dang. That helps so muchhhhhh.
Thank you lol I do need to do some research.
I should of read your links before I posted my question. (sorry)
I will do my best to understand what im even asking next time.
Thank you.
See you later when I have done a bit more research.
Must clean the noob off *scrubs*
Sorry for any rudeness

Since rooting,ROMing, games freeze and reboot phone

Hello, recived phone yesterday, tried install ARHD, that went wrong so I reverted to installing the latest stock, now whenever I play games they freeze for 5 seconds, then reboot my phone , I've tried unrooting, different roms and still the same problem, any help?
Android Revolution? That ROM is not meant for our phone, its for the international version. Completely different hardware, and therefore different ROMs. That's probably the cause of your issue. You're lucky you don't have a brick.
Try relocking the bootloader and running the RUU.
This is getting ridiculous. You're at least the 5th person posting here in the last day or 2 to flash something not meant for our phone. How many times does it need to be said? Stick to flashing only things in the AT&T specific Development section, and in my index thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1541
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
lol another user who did no research at all before flashing. You kinda deserve it. Just be glad it's not a perm brick.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
There have been an influx of people who jump in the deep end without learning to swim. No sympathy from me. All of this information is readily available on the internet, xda specifically, and if you screw up your phone because you tried to do something you didn't understand it is entirely your fault. Next time do a little research before you try flashing something.
0.o no way, is it even possible to flash arhd without bricking or at the very least bootlooping? I think he just posted in the wrong device forum.

How to avoid bricking your device.

Hey people, I am slightly new to xda developers but I am an experienced rooted user. So I saw many people who are inexperienced at rooting their phones brick their phones very easily. Yes I did notice a few "how to avoid bricking your phone" threads but they are quite old. Since the new versions of updates and apps are rolling out, I thought it might be a good time to post a newer thread.
Ways to avoid bricking your device.
* When flashing a custom rom or kernel, ALWAYS use the kernel or rom that is for your device and your device only.
I realized that online it does not say anything about always flashing the custom rom or device that is for your device only. Many users are out there who brick their phones by flashing the wrong rom or kernel. ( I myself have once bricked my phone like this).
*Avoid apps that can brick your device.
Many people brick their phones like this because once you have a rooted device, you want to try out all the cool root apps. Also please people name some apps that will brick your device as well.
*** APPS THAT CAN BRICK YOUR DEVICE***
Fonts installer(root), Chain fire 3D when installed on AOS 4.0 and above, switchme when installed on a custom rom, and so on. (I have more apps I could list but I am sure people out there will post it). The basic idea is read the comments about the app and see if the app is safe. Many people just get the apps online without researching and end up bricking their phones. EDIT: Any type of font installer app that is for rooted phones only have a high chance of bricking your device. One tap root apps can give a virus to your device without knowing and have chances that it will brick. After all, it is an application that roots your device, there is always a catch. z4 root for example will give you a virus and brick your device. Rom manager *can* brick your device if you try to flash a custom recovery. For Rom manager, there are users who have successfully flashed a custom recovery and users who have bricked their phones. There is definitely a risk, so I recommend flashing a custom recovery on a safer application like goo manager. Goo manager will be safe if you READ the instruction, if you do not, you will be carrying a brick in your pocket.
*When flashing/installing or in a rooting progress be patient
When flashing or rooting be patient. Do not unplug or turn off the device when in a rooting or flashing progress because that will brick the device, and I am not talking about boot loop/soft brick. Im talking about hard brick, a black screen no sign of life brick. (Once bricked my phone like that lol).
*Research and follow instructions.
Many people tend to skip the reading and researching and do it by their feeling. Then what happens? They carry around a brick in their pocket.
Research about your phone and learn it. All I got to say for this one is, READ READ AND READ.
Anyways everyone that is all I got to say, I have more things but they are minor and someone will definitely post it. Please everyone take the time to comment your thoughts and ideas on how to avoid bricking your device. I hope many users found this helpful.

I bricked my poco X3 NFC by installing a recovery image by *flashify* app
p.s: i had root access and i already have TWRP, but the reason i wanted to switch to orange fox it's because i haven't access to the whole storage on TWRP recovery so i wanted to install Orange Fox to try it out, and i was too lazy to install it by PC, and i said to myself , why not installing it by the phone it self! After installing it on *Flashify* it asks to reboot, after that i got a bootloop and i don't even know if it's installed . Now the phone it's returned to the shop so it can be fixed...
But altough it's happened, i'm planning to flash more custom rom, ad try the cool Kernel s cause it's fun.

Didn't know that but thx for tye info
Bricking is a condition when a device is usually interrupted in an attempt to update the device. There can be 6 steps to avoid bricking
(1) custom recovery,
(2) know ADB and Fastboot commands;
(3) keep a factory image on your phone;
(4) keep a Nandroid backup on your phone;
(5) keep copies of both backups on a computer;
(6) if you can't replace your battery, know how to hard reset your phone.

U gave ur phone in shop what did they said?
Honestly one of the most laughable things imo is to return your phone to the shop or any technical expert shop.
Guys what you want the shop to do for you? Factory Reset? Don't think them as a real experienced ones, they just know the basics. Any any one who have an experience of installing custom ROMs or TWRP & Rooting, is better than most of the shop repairs.
They are just experiencers for the AVERAGE people. I maybe even when I sometimes go to the shop to fix my devices, I tell the employee what to do, because they hardly know about their tools.
IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SPEND A LOT OF TIME, DON'T ROOT. Basic Logic, Root isn't for normal users and wont give you a huge advantages. Root is ONLY for fun and amusing, there are no real need of Root. So if you're too lazy to search for solution and trying many methods of solving your problem, and you just hurry to fix your device. DON'T ROOT IT.

[Q] Updating to Android L on Rooted Nexus 5

Hey guys.
I have a rooted, unlocked bootloader, custom "recoveryed" Nexus 5, on stock 4.4.4 and stock kernel.
My question is, when Android L comes around, what should I do to update. Doing an OTA update is probably not the best idea right? Since I am rooted and have a custom recovery. So, what would be the steps to take to update. I donĀ“t mind loosing root or making a fresh install.
Anyway just a noob question about something that I never had to do, since I rooted it on 4.4.4.
Thanks for your attention.
Flash a factory image.
Where can I get those?

You can OTA update fine. It will just remove root is all.
Get the wugfresh toolbox and reinstall root after. This is what I do every time.
Don't use toolkits.

I've been away from the Nexus 5 forum for a while, I come back and this is still happening. Please don't recommend rootkits for people who are clearly new to android modification. As said a million times on these forums, rootkits are fine if you know what you're doing but not for beginners. Beginners need to do things manually because they need to be able to fix their own mistakes if they're simple. Instead of going back here and asking very basic questions which they could have answered themselves if they didn't use a rootkit.
OP: Please do as @rootSU said and flash a factory image. His sig contains all the threads and information you need. It's a very handy tool which can fix your phone's software problems in almost any situation. Especially in the case of Android L (an update with HUGE internal changes), I highly recommend flashing factory image. This is what I will be doing. The factory image completely replaces your OS with stock.

Okay but thats a fine answer over "dont use rootkits"
That made me think they were bad or something.
Technically like myself he is all stock he said, so aside root hes already pretty much stock OS.
Not sure where the animosity is. Also he obviously knows how to root and install custom Bls if hes done it before.
I very rarely pop in here anymore myself unless there is a major issue but doing things the way Ive been has pretty much eliminated those (jinx). Im still more on the Nexus S forum since I tinker with that more as my mp3 player.
He could always just take a backup before updating and dive in. Ive done that in the past with fine results.
Also even IF you do everything manually first and down the line screw up something theres a pretty BIG chance youll be here asking wtf happened. It happens to the best of us at one point or another.

Yeah, but that's why we ask people to read all the threads before starting to mess with the device first. If you understand how the basic things work and what you're actually doing to achieve root, it's alot easier to troubleshoot very basic problems yourself. Of course for bigger issues people can feel free to post and get help. Also, if they did read everything and still messed up, when they post they're able to list the steps they've taken in the post so people can help them better. Otherwise, it becomes "help I messed up, I don't know what to do, I pressed the start button on the toolkit and my phone doesn't turn on."
Regarding the first part of your post, I still think it's just better to start fresh. Yeah, you can do a backup and try it but I honestly think it will be wasting time. It's always good to start fresh once in a while even if you don't use xposed/rooted apps. Eventually, your phone gets cluttered with apps and sometimes they conflict and you have battery issues, and other issues, etc. Since L is the biggest update to android since even I've been involved in it (I only started getting involved in XDA around 4.0), I would highly recommend everyone flashes the factory image and starts fresh. That way you will also know if there are bugs with L itself, or if's the fact that you installed on top of kitkat and all your prior data that's causing the issue. Anyway, no hard feelings. You said you don't spend a lot of time here so it's understandable.

Well my bad, Ive never seen that. But toolkits (mainly this one) have very detailed instructions. Let alone the same issues happen when using ADB and push.
Its a double edged sword. I get the , go the long route first, which even I did (but also pre root kits), but In my own defense reading the OP he already did root and BL his phone (to my assumptions) so I didnt think my input was that bad.

I hear ya.
I ran the L beta a while so honestly Im not that worried. JINX, Im sure you will be answering my HELP thread in 4 weeks! lol
There was no animosity from me. I simply said "don't use toolkits" and that was for good reasons which have been well written in the (General) sticky threads that all new users should read
The problem is we have to waste our time trying to explain what fastboot is to someone who broke their phone after only having used a toolkit. This is why we prefer people don't use them or recommend them.
On top of that, many toolkits are multi-device and this can cause bricks when faced with uneducated users.

I ended up usung CF-Auto-Root, wich is not a toolkit right? :-/

Its not but it still sort of removes some of the manual steps we hope you would learn doing it all manually.
Best place to start is the general sticky thread. My adb and fastboot thread is designed to be a good start for people looking for basic info. Then anyone looking to actually root can move on to the rooting guides which employ much of what was learned in the former thread.

Right. I was checking the guide from the thread in your signature and saw the way you did the root. I've done the fastboot and bootloader unlock and all those thing, but when I got to the root part I used the CF-Auto-Root. Is this going to give me problems?
