hello. i will be getting my captiave next week and i was just wondering whats the best way to keep ur unlimited data? ive been reading around and seems like ppl have been getting it by not getting their captivate at at&t. is this true? if u got urs their at&t how did u manage to keep ur unlimited data? if i have to go through a best buy or something, it wont be a problem. any suggestions is greatly appreciated!
I kept unlimited data by just keeping my old phone number/account/sim card with att. You get "grandfathered" into keeping the unlimited data plan if you already had it with att through your old phone/sim/account. That is, you get the option of keeping it.. its a tad more expensive than the 2GB plan... but you don't need to worry about data.
Good luck.

There is no trick to this. If you are upgrading your phone, you can keep your plan. All carriers have allowed this for years. Unless they add a special plan for a special phone (like they did for iPhone) you are fine. There are some people that have old $10/month data plans they have had for 10 years.
Walk into AT&T, get your phone, and they will move your plan to it as long as you are upgrading and not adding a line. They will explain it all to you. There are no mysteries. If you don't like what you hear then you can always walk out without buying.
I had an iPhone 3G, they had to remove the data plan and put it back (launch day for captivate); but I did it all at the AT&T store and I still have unlimited data plan.

a long as you have a PDA/Smartphone unlimited plan you will get to keep it but if you have a regular phone unlimited plan they will make you change to one of the new Smartphone plans that are limited now...That's what happen to me... No more unlimited data for me...
thank you all for ur response! ive had the iphone 2g for years and i have a tilt 2 at the moment. so i should be good right? hmmm i dont know why when i read certani ppl's post that they got their unlimited data removed... well i hope when i get my captivate everything will work out! i guess i will be going to at&t... still browsing around to find a good deal!
i just went to a local att store and was told that i can not keep my $15 unlimited data plan, it's a smartphone. i haven't used att branded phone for years, my current phone is a samsung i8000 with unlimited nation call and data plan. if i wanna cativate, i have to pay at least 25 bucks for 2G. bummer! do i have chance if i get it from best buy? thanks in advance for any inputs.

How much are you paying for your data plan currently?? If you are paying $ 20 then they will make you get one of the new limited plans, however, if you are paying $ 30 a month, then you will get to keep the unlimited plan. I switched from a BB over to the Captivate and kept my unlimited plan!

hmmm i believe im paying 30 bucks a month? when i check online it shows SMT data. is that the data? lol
If you're paying >= $30/mo for your data, you can keep it. The unlimied data plan that aren't allowed are those $10, $15 or $20 plans which are only valid for specific hardwares in the past.

At some point AT&T will notice you are using a smartphone and they will make you up your data plan - it is required for the Captivate. it doesn't matter where you get the phone.

My sister in law works at att, she thought I had media net when I bought this phone. Luckily I didn't. If you go to the att store and already have unlimited (as long as it's a smartphone/pda package), you'll be grandfathered in

I have been on MediaNet Unlimited with Samsung BJ2 and Jack (i637) for a few years and they never made up upgrade. I just ordered the Captivate with my ATT Premier acct and didn't make me upgrade. Any idea once I start using, they'll make me upgrade? I am not a big data user (usually stay under 2GB a month).
What if i go with a SE Vivaz instead? It's Symbian OS....
I dont really care which one as long as it has decent camera, can tether, and can do email and basic browsing. i gave up on WinMo 6.1~6.5 after the two samsungs (i617 and i637) can't handle 4 email accts w/o running out of memory and Xperia X1 was just too slow. I tried N97 mini too but it was flaky and no exchange folders. I'm trying to avoid changing my $15 mediaNet unlimited while fulfilling my 'smartphone' needs. Suggestions are appreciated.

If you want any chance of that, get a phone that AT&T doesn't offer at all. If its something they offer they will see your imei and add the smartphone data. And even then you risk it because some people have had the data plan added when they used an off network phone.

hey all. im about to purchase a captivate and it will be my first smart phone. i am curious if you all recommend getting the big or small data plan. i have a lot of access to wifi and on my current phone which has the unlimited data plan (not a smart phone tho) i have never gone over 200 MB and one of my family members who has an iphone has only gone over 3 times in the last 12 months. anyways, i was curious what you all had to say about it. thanks!
I have the 2GB plan since I use a radio app everyday for 3-4 hours. That rashes a lot of data and also have facebook, tapatalk, and both emails updating all day long. I went over the 200MB once but that was before I started using radio and pandora.

If you are careful about your use when you aren't on wifi the 200meg plan should work just fine.

Apparently some people have reported problems keeping an unlimited plan if it was of the "MediaMax" variety. I had a smartphone unlimited plan and she didn't even bother asking me if I wanted to keep it; she just said, "Oh, you'll be wanting to keep this" and left it in place.
the stock phone does not come with a way to turn off data.

Does the 2GB plan really let you use that much streaming? I've been thinking of switching from the 200MB plan, but I'm not sure how much more I'd really get out of it.

I have the 200mb plan and if I had a choice due to money constraints right now, I wouldn't have any. Since I do all my app downloading and video watching on wifi, I have only gone over once. I use it on stuff that doesn't user much data such as xda app, viewing basic web, and email. Of course I always use #data* to check my usage.

I also had the $10/mo unlimited on the family plan but no matter how much I jumped up and down they wouldn't let me keep it..said I had to go to one of the 2 plans.
I have wifi at work and at home and so I usually use around 150MB of 200MB. I also have a sprint HTC Mogul active on boost mobile paygo which allows unlimited 3g data for 3.33 a month which I use for all of my mobile hot spot/streaming radio needs. It basically has a permanent home in my car which I use instead of the local radio stations.
I know a lot of you guys use only around 200 megs, but I guess I'm lucky I'm on the older data plans because I use around 5 gigs a month of data. I don't stream music everyday or anything but I use my phone's 3G a lot like a normal computer so I use a lot of data when downloading whatever I'm downloading.
I tether my phone a lot and typically use upwards of 5GB per month. My husband on the other hand has the same phone and almost never even reaches 200MB thanks to the wireless at his work.
i've never come close to 200mb, and i never worry about data usage. i think if you need more you already know it.
Both with a nexus one and a captivate on seperate plans, att "upgraded" me from a basic phone with unlimited, to a smart phone plan with 2gb.

I'm on wifi a lot, and I still manage to use a GB a month.
Sent from my Captivate.
I've been hitting about 10gbs a month for the last 3 months (pandora, streaming tv, tethering for BlackOps) and now ATT recently decided to change my mediamax account to 2gb datapro without my consent. They expect me to pay the overage charges even though i was never informed of the change and would never agree to it. Im so outraged right now that if they dont give me back my "grandfather data plan" which i've had consistently for 5+ years. Im going to switch to Verizon, my buddy tells me they have no data cap plus they got better service. We'll see if ATT honors a loyal customer or loses one....
My contract recently expired and I am looking to upgrade. My question is, is the 2gb Data plan enough to support the Infuse, Atrix, or Inspire? I have read the other thread on this question, however all the responses were about getting unlimited data. I would get it but, being in school, i cant justify/afford the cost of buying an iPhone 2g. I have been looking for a fellow friend or developer in my area to lend me theirs but I am looking to get the new phone in a week or two.
So, in general, is the 2gb plan enough?
My day during the year, 8-3, classes, no major usage, mabey 30 mins internet.
4-10 moderate usage, mabey up to 1 hour usage. Internet, mabey an app or two, and possible Pandora a day or two a month. Tethering mabey 20 mins max 3 days a week or less. weekends, moderate usage, internet sparingly all day, mabey 1:00 max. Summer is similar to weekends.
What is the general opinion? Or personal experience.
I live in Florida and used Pandora a good amount of time during my drive to N Carolina and back as well as my Google Maps, and didn't get anywhere near the 2gb. I'm on my phone most of the day at work (730-4) and use the browser, Facebook app, and various other data using apps. The only problem you might run into is the tethering imo.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Totally enough, even with your usage. I have the same plan and I am a pretty heavy user day to day, I read xda for about 3 hours a day maybe watch like 4 YouTube vids, engadget app, Facebook, stream Pandora for like an hour... and yet the past 3 months I can only get up to using about 1. 5 Gigs.... trust me its enough

Can't you upgrade and keep your unlimited plan if you allready have unlimited I have upgraded more than ones and still have my unlimited data its grandfathered in if I had 2 gb cap I would had been over by 5 gb this mounth just think if you installed a rom its one third of a gb if you use the phone
Mr.Nun.Ya
it is enough, i use my phone all day and when i get the bill, its nowhere near 2gb.
Unlimited plans make you feel warm and fussy because you always know you won't go over. If you are aware of how you use the internet you will be fine. Me, I turn off my mobile network religiously it save massive battery life and all the apps that want to update can't. (if its in my pocket I don't care about someones facebook update) Second I use WiFi when I can: its free, normal much faster, I do not have 4g but I do have a 10m connection at home and a larger one @ the university I work at.
If you every want to check how much data you have used use this number and it will show you your data usage; *3283#
If you check that once a week you will never go over, or you can use an app like 3g Watchdog Pro(or lite) which is absolutely amazing...it shows you how much dat\ you used that day/week/month...it predicts how much you will use by the date you will be billed based on your current usage, calculates how much data you can use a day for the whole month without going over, it is a very nice app/widget to have
2gb DAta Plan
I constantly go over and I have 4gb, but I also am traveling and tether. Since I never had AT&T until now I was told I am not able to get unlimited which I think is stupid.
That's crap if I had a cap with att I would move to Verizon they have. no cap and the thunderbolt I don't no why you guys think it alright you probably think its OK to pay extra to tether how I use my data is my business its just a way to squeese more money from you
Mr.Nun.Ya
I also have the 2gig data plan, I have not came close to my limit at all. I am on my phone all the time, at least my wife says. The close I came to was 1 gig, that was re-downloading all of my google apps, before I swtich over to my WIfi.
I never use Wifi- because my broadband connection is slower than my ATT connection on the phone. Ihave an older unlimited data plan, and I use 7-8G in a typical month.
Verizon
I was told and have read on several websites that Verizon will be dropping the unlimited data plans and adopting a tiered system like AT&T. If you have your unlimited with AT&T right now, find a 3g smartphone that is acceptable and keep your unlimited. I made the mistake of not doing that and regret it. I do however really like my Inspire.
Lol I never had unlimited but I did what was posted and I use about 4gbs a month and have unlimited now

Mine is 2GB and always well below the limit line. Sometimes I wished there was this 1GB plan
It's a sad thought, but I think Verizon is really killing it for us Android/smart phone users. Their new tiered plans will start July 7 and the prices are ridiculous. (80$ for 10GB) (30$ for 2GB) and more, but It's not that I hate Verizon. I'm new to them, I've only been with them for 2 months, and I love the quality of service I get. Good thing is we all keep our unlimited data due to our contracts having been signed before July 7th.
But it's like Verizon is trying to kick out all the smart phone users with their already overpriced plans. Att isn't looking any better, but when I look at Sprint (which I left for Verizon) and their new LTE contract and unlimited data it looks like a haven for me.
Now I love my Thunderbolt and will stay with it for most likely half my contract (maybe the whole 2 years) then switch over to Sprint because I really don't want to pay that much for data, I always go above 10GB sadly, I hope Sprint stays unlimited until then, or I could hope for the impossible. That Verizon will stop being greedy. :/
What are your thoughts on this? Will you be sticking with the new plans when your contract is over? or will you switch over to a new carrier? (if so which carrier?) I felt like making a topic about this to read other people's thoughts on this.
I have little choice where I live. It's Verizon or crap signal. Sprint has zero coverage here. I despise Verizon's policies and outright greed. The price on data plans and tethering was shocking when we got these phones (first smart phones for us). I had read some where that their agreement with the FCC when they bought the 700mhz spectrum for LTE is going to cause problems for their tethering plans. It was something about being required to allow tethering on that spectrum.
Regardless, I'm not a heavy wireless bandwidth user, but it would be convenient to be able to link my laptop up when I'm out in the boonies and need to remote into work. And not get raped for $20 every time I need it.
I only signed a one year contract. I hope my rates don't change when its over. Looks like ill be buying all my phones cash to avoid a data plan upgrade.

Glad I got in when I did.
I don't use my data that much, or so I thought...but my bill every month is 6 to 8 GB. I know I can cut that back by downloading all the different ROMs and Kernals on my PC then moving them over...but man it sure is nice using LTE speeds to download 200 plus MB...
I'm not one to start rumors...only this discussion.
Anyone feel this might be a pre-cursor to an iPhone 5? I still don't believe it'll have LTE...

There are only a small handful of phones you can even buy and not be forced to use a data plan.
I would bet my money, if I were a gamblin' man, that when your contract is up...you will be forced to tiered data IF you get a new handset and sign a new contract.
If you're renewing a current unlimited data plan, you will keep your unlimited data. It will apply to new service contracts only.
I skated on unlimited data for 3 years after a 5 gig cap was placed on sprint's aircards because I kept renewing my original contract.
Now, once you let your contract lapse, without renewing it, you will be subject to changes with your service when you do sign back up.

I don't get where people think verizon is so expensive. Compaired to other carriers vzw is not that much more expensive, and even cheaper in some scenarios. Now boost mobile or cricket may be cheaper but that's like walking into a cadillac dealer and *****ing that the cts-v you're looking at is more then the 1998 Taurus you seen down the street. If you want to deal with sprints ****ty service go with them... I'm sure Walmart has some cheap prepay options too. You are paying for a service, you get what you pay for. You pay 29.99 for unlimited 4g data on your phone and ***** because they want to charge you if you choose to enable a different data service on your phone? So you think for the meisly 30 bucks a month you should be able to use 100gbs of bandwith tethering your pc and seeding 50 torrents? All they want is another 29.99 to tether, and guess what, that's unlimited too! On top of that they gave it to you for free for three months for buying your phone.. I can't wait for teired data. And another FYI, Verizon currently does not charge to use mobile hotspot on their tabs, guess why? Because you pay for teired data, they actually don't care how you you ur data, you bought it! Who needs to use 10 gigs of data on their phone a month? I use my phone constantly for work and play, stream Pandora for hours, and have never hit five gigs... Download all your firmware on ur home WiFi network if you want to download straight to Ur phone, or use Ur data cable ( they gave that to you for free too ) home WiFi not fast enough? Drop it and get Ur 29.99 tethering plan, bet that's cheaper then what Ur paying Ur isp now

Dude, did you type that wall of text on your phone? LOL That's just sick . I like reading and think that if people put more effort into what they wrote, this would be a more informed world instead of posting 2-3 line paragraphs. I for one applaud you for your wall of text. I bow at you doing it on your Thunderbolt. lol.
That said, love your last part there that I quoted. Agreed 100%. I'm all for saving money but no one is forcing us to use smartphones.
Lol I would have used better grammar if I was not mobile atm...

If you don't change your plan you can keep renewing for the same price with the same features.. so you can keep renewing your plan and keep unlimited data
It's also hilarious how people think sprint will stay unlimited forever. Everyone seems to have forgotten how their own ceo who preaches unlimited has said that they were looking at a switch as well.

Quit *****ing, what are we a bunch of 16 year old kids working at the local fast food joint? You shouldn't be carrying a 250 dollar phone in that case, that's not financially responsible at all.

If it wasn't going to cost more than my phone's value each month in data charges, you might be right. However, for those of us who actually use the phone for work or anything else with high data usage, the new changes are ridiculous.
If they don't grandfather users, I'll be dropping my family plan. I already pay $250/mo for 5 lines - mine is the only one with high usage (data/voice/txting) due to work.
I understand but don't agree with AT&T's throttle policy. But this is just ridiculous (see screenshot below).
.01 Mbps!!! Ridiculous... speeds this slow make my phone practically unusable!! And this is "unlimited" data... haha.
I know there is nothing I can do except grind my teeth and take it or go elsewhere.. I hope AT&T loses a lot of business because of this.
I understand throttling to an extent... but to throttle at 3gb with technology today. HD videos, Netflix, YouTube, internet radio, posting pictures with the phones 8mp camera.. of course data usage is getting bigger and limits are getting smaller.
I don't go far over 3gb, its hard to with these speeds.. but its normally the last week of the month that I get throttled. So I would most likely use 4gb, maybe 5gb. I read that 4g phone plans have a 5gb limit... and honestly I thought the Infuse was a "4g" phone... any way for an enormous and very profitable company to stick it to the little guys.
I also noticed that I get throttled at different usage. I use data monitor to track my usage and I've been throttled as low as roughly 2.5gb and at max I'll get to maybe 4gb.
Does anyone know how exactly we are throttled? It can't be automatic if it varies this much, can it? I imagine some well paid old man in a suit counting his stack of money, laughing and randomly hitting a big throttle button. Haha.
I apologize for a semi useless post and ranting away.. it's just been one of those days and needed to blow some steam.
Thank you for listening and everyone who contributes to this forum.
Now I'll sit here while I wait for this post and screenshot to upload on my ATT throttled BS. I wonder if a dial up connection would be faster.. haha. Do they still have dial up internet available? Remember all those AOL CDs? Haha.. sorry... I'm done...

I feel your pain, but from a different direction.
We only have the 200MB per month AT&T plan for each of our 5 Infuse phones and don't go over that.
Most of our internet activities occur at home where we use our Wifi router.
But that single Wifi router feeds up to 5 phones, a pc, and three laptops.
After somewhere around 5GB in a month and our ISP (Clear) starts throttling us slower.
It definitely kills the experience when you can't watch a video from start to finish without waiting for it to buffer a few times.
Unlimited Text, Talk, and Data, only $45/mo: Prepaid Straight Talk SIM Port your number over, and tell ATT to go fornicate themselves.
I am rated at 7.2mbit up to 360mb. I will grab another test once I'm throttled. This is o2 in Munich Germany. They say throttled speed is 64k. We will see.

I feel for you, but at the same time all carriers are doing this or will be doing it in the near future.
If you look at the current growth of mobile data usage and consider the spectrum they have to work with it's not sustainable. You can only fit so much information in a certain amount of bandwidth.
I am almost always near wifi, so my monthly data usage rarely excedes 200-300 mb. I'm on the 2gb plan but have never even used half of it.
Personally I wish companies would charge for what you actually use. (at a reasonable rate of course)
That will never happen, because they can't do the legal gymnastics to call it "unlimited" and they would scare off the early adopter and trendsetter types.
I left AT&T for Straight talk and left my 400 Meg twice as expensive plan behind for unlimited talk, text and data and now happily tether my Thrive Tablet to my phone on the back woods farm of my grandparents in Kentucky for Christmas where AT&T couldn't even connect! :good:
The thing you are forgetting is Straight Talk isn't true unlimited either. I have them and I'm talking from experience. I've gotten lucky and used almost 5gb and not been throttled but they are getting worse about it lately. I only used 1.6GB this month and they throttled me. There is no rhyme or reason to how they do it but they do it. 2GB and less you are usually fine on ST but if you goto howardforums.com and goto the Straight Talk section they have a thread on the throttling. Some people use 4-5GB and have no issues but some use a bit over 1GB and get throttled. It's honestly still WELL worth the cost because to even get CLOSE to this on AT&T for a single line will be around $110 a month.
I have 3 GB data plan and I think that's enough for me
If you are on single person plan, I also think that straight talk will be better choice for you

I hate the fact that they make you have a data plan with any smart phone. But their new family share plan helps a lot.
Going to look into Straight Talk, thx
If you upgrade your phone to LTE phone, you will get 5 GB and get throttled.
You should upgrade your phone to get more and faster data from AT&T

But then I will have to sign another two year contract if I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for a phone

Throttling never makes sense just like the family share plan it's an excuse to get more money. I got fed up with ATT and left for t mobile. The plans are cheaper and I get true unlimited. With a rooted phone I tether and sure it's not true Lte but I still average 8-10 Mbps and that's perfect for me.
no 2 yr contract nexus 4 and T-Mobile best option out there

Maybe I don't know will enough about AT&T, but I believe you party same amount of money even you are under contract or not right?
Then all you need to pay is phone cost. There are some good phones with LTE and under $100.
Or you have choice of straight talk which gives you pretty good amount of data with super cheap cost.

tmobile is true unlimited. also has month to month plan no contract. i'm gonna switch over soon when my contract is done with att...
Just wanted to chime in for a second. I had Straight Talk on my Infuse 4G for almost a year and while the service is pretty decent, I noticed that in a crowded AT&T cell I get kicked off. Also, I notice that (very rarely) in some places I don't have access to 3G service whereas other people with contract AT&T do (might be a modem thing, though, not 100% sure). There is supposedly an unspoken limit of 2GB of data per month (and some say even 100MB per day at most), but I have been careful to stay under both of those limits, the maximum I have used in a month on ST was 1.4GB.
Now I'm back on AT&T with 6GB Mobile Data Share and 2 lines (our Skyrocket i727s) and I have to say that the service is more consistent than I had on my time with straight talk (I've witnessed at shopping centers and malls I got kicked off of the data network more than a few times in favor of AT&T customers due to crowded cells), that and the LTE is great and the Skyrocket is just an all around awesome phone. I know the i727 is long in the tooth, but $.97 for a 1.5GHz Qualcomm S3, 1GB of RAM, LTE and that great 8MP camera is too hard to pass up. If you're broke like I was, it's a good deal.
Just my two cents. I know AT&T is a PITA but it could always be worse...you could be stuck on Sprint paying for 4G in an area with no 4G like I used to, lol.
