Hi all
Before flashing any rom, I installed CWM and did a full nandroid backup. I'm trying to get the phone back to stock as I'm returning it so I've restored this backup via CWM. It is correctly back to stock but I have 2 problems :
- CWM is still installed
- There is the superuser app in the app list
I've tried fastboot flash recovery recovery.img with the .img file I had within my nandroid but it gave me an FAILED : (remote:write fail)
Any clues? Thanks
EDIT : I have a AT&T 3G Nexus S
EDIT2: Ok I'm almost there, I've managed to remove the superuser package with these commands :
- adb shell
- mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock03 /system
- su
- rm /system/app/Superuser.apk
- rm /system/bin/su
- rm /system/bin/busybox
- rm /system/bin/rootshell
- reboot
anyone please? I'm just looking for the stock recovery.img, I've searched thoroughly and I can't seem to find it...
Grab one of the stock (2.3.1, 2.3.2, or 2.3.3) nandroid backup and flash it via CWM
Do a factory reset in CWM
Reboot phone (this will flash the stock recovery back automatically)
Of course, su will not be there after flashing the ROM

Thanks for your help. However, I've already restored my nandroid backup and it did not flash back to the stock recovery. If I try to do it manually I get a write error as mentioned.
What happens if you try to re-flash CWM? The same error message?

No the CWM flash fines but the "stock" recovery doesn't.... It's much bigger too, CWM is ~3MB and the stock is ~8MB...Weird
Hmm, I think the recovery.img created by CWM is not the way to go... Considering it is created after you flashed CWM, how could it contain the stock recovery in it?
If I were you I'd try flashing the 2.3.3 OTA package

That's what I thought as well but everyone kept saying that it would flash back the recovery...
I'm a bit worried about flashing this rom since I got the 3G ATT version, are you sure this won't brick anything?

I got a T-Mobile one so I can only confirm that the OTA package works for me but I don't know if it will have any problem with ATT one. Guess I'm out of ideas for now

You're welcome. I'd also like to know what's the correct solution for this too

my steps were like this:
1)rooted properly
2) flashed clockwork recovery properly
3) installed cognition's rom
4) decided I wanted to flash the voodoo fix located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784170
it did steps 1 and 2 and complete, and now it just keeps rebooting to samsung recovery
neverrrrmind.
I knew I wasn't screwed, since recovery means no bricked device.
I just did a little research, found odin3 one-click downloader.. and that solved all my problems
But I have one question..
is it possible to push a file onto the internet sdcard via recovery mode by using adb?
like adb push <file> <directory> ? Cause if so I could have just pushed a new update.zip on the card (clockwork update.zip) and my problems would have been fixed
you say you flashed cognition. was it froyo or eclair (2.2 or 2.1)?
in answer to your question, yes:
adb push <location\of\file.blah> /sdcard
I flashed froyo.

an updated update.zip wont do ANYTHING for you. you need the 2e kernel in order to do anything with clockwork.
and if you would read the dev forum, you would know that voodoo DOESNT work in froyo yet....its in the works now....
Hi,
I'm very happy to be ble to do some changes in my own phone Thanks to you of corse.
I made a root.I had no problem doing it.
I used the Odin and S2 root for it.
After that,I've made the CWM backup. All went nice and without issue. I've also saved the backup on my PC.
Thene I've installed also the Titanium backup. But I just left it like that for the moment.I didn't make any backup with it.
I wanted to get read of the triangle at the boot moment.
To get read of the triangle we need to flash the original kernel (in my case it's KI4).
I did it. Once again all went well.I don't have anymore the triangle.I still have the root (I have Superuser and CWM).
And now the best part.I suppose that it's my fault that it's not working now.
The problem is that before the flash of the original kernel (not to have anymore the triangle) I erased the backup I made before from CWM.
Just don't ask me why.I don't realy know
Now I wont to make the backup by CWM, the phone reboots,I get the window "Android system recovery" and it doesn't make the backup. It gives me the info:
reboot the system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

Can anybody help me on this.
Is there some trick to solve the issue?
Maybe I don't know what to do and the answer is simple?
The phone is working fine.
But I would like to be able to make that backup with CWM.
I suppose that it was a mistake to erase the backup

Something got messed up along the way and you're not booting into CWM anymore. If the phone is still booting normally just go back to ROM Manager and flash CWM again. Boot into recovery and make a nice backup. Don't delete it this time, lol.

You don't have CWM recovery flashed....that is your stock recovery. Boot normally and them flash it from Rom Manager. Once is finished, go to Manage Restore / Backups and try to restore your backup. That should be working. The issue is that when you change your kernel you might have wiped some data...

Ok.So I have to get the Rom Manager (I don't have it yet).
Sorry for the question,I'm a noob : It means that I will have an option in RM to flash CWM?
How do I do it exactly?
I don't want to f..k this up any more.

"Boot into recovery" - I'm doing it from CWM or how exactly?

As I've wrote before I'm a noob girl if we are talking here about all those changes and flashing.
But trust me,I'm trying to do my best
The same question as for the first post.
After that I will reboot one more time my phone,I have to go to RM and I have to flash it (you meen flash the CWM)?
But how do I do it exactly? I don't have any idea
"Once is finished, go to Manage Restore / Backups" - I'm doing it in CWM or RM
And if I'm doing it with RM it will restore the backup I made previously with the CWM?
After doing what you've said I will be aslo able to use the CWM and go to ClockworkMod Recovery from the position of CWM?
Do I leave the backup which I previously dleted and got it back from my PC and put it into: /mnt/sdcard/cklokworkmod/buckup?
For your info, when I go to CWM,Restore (Restore an existing backup) I see the backup name:
2012-01-26.02.25.55
0 days,10 hours ago,656.1MB
What a shame with all thos noob questions, but only you can help me
Just don't kill me for the spam.
Next time I will try to do it in a good way.I'm talking here about the way I'm posting
Edit: Ok,I was searching and now I know that we have the option in RM : "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" lol
Is there any way to do it without using RM? I was reading that some of people had issue with it and I'm scared.
Anyway can you please just tell me and answer on my noob questions,so I could be sure that I won't make things worse...
I would be grateful.
So I couldn't wait and I got the RM from the Market (version v4.8.1.4).
I've flashed the ClockworkMod Recovery with it (now I have the version 4.0.1.5).
I don't know if it's the good way but my phone wasn't connected to internet. Then RM asked for it,so I turned on the WIFI.RM connected I suppose with internet and installed or flashed me a polish RM version.
Then I went to Manage Restore/Backup (in RM).
I've selected the backup that I had (anyway it was just one which I've copied previously from my PC).
The phone rebooted...
And I got this msg :
reboot the system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
-- Installing package...
Pinding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature

It means that I cannot still boot into recovery...?
I suppose.
When I try to "Reboot into Recovery" from RM it's still the same msg.
When I do it from CWM,same msg.
More info so it could help you to help me
When I go to SU and I go on CWM I see this in 4 position:
- system/bin/sh
Maybe this bin file has something to do with it?
When I go to CWM in the field kernel I see : Current kernel:Unknown
The CWM from thhe CF-Root has the version V2.0
The CWM in the RM is as I wrote before the version : 4.0.1.5
I don't know if it's normal.
Phone is still working fine,no issue.
What to do in that case?
Please help.
I'm waiting for any reply.and at the same time I'm searching on the forum.
Maybe I can just go to ODIN and one more time make the root?
ODIN + flash the CF-root in PDA and then use S2 root.
Or maybe the issue will solve just flashing the CF-root file in ODIN.
Please, just tell me if I'm right?
I'm scared that I will do it in fiew minutes, because I cannot sit like this second day and I don't won't to make it worste...

Ok, so let's go easy and gentle....if you have Rom Manager installed, then enter RM and the first thing you will see is the option Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery, if you have flashed it before you will two lines behing the title saying Last Recovery Version: xx.x.x and your version....if not you won´t be able to operate anything from there until you install (flash CWM recovery).
Once you are sure that the recovery is installed, then go to Rom Manager and manage Restore and Backups. As I see, you already have a backup, so you can do a new one or restore the existing one just from the Rom Manager...select the folder with the date and time and let the cell work. When is finished, you will be like before....
Don´t root your phone again....you are already rooted. It will only jam you up....

Thank you for a quick answer.
I'm entering to RM
I see first off all : Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
Uder I see just one line : Curent Recovery : ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
What I did I ckliked one more time on flash ClockworkMod...
I ckliked on my phoen name SGS2 (strange the system shows 2 times the SGS2,I took the first one)
Now I see under Flash ClockworkMod Recovery:
Curent Recovery : ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
New Recovery: ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
When I closed the RM and I get back in, I see under Flash ClockworkMod Recovery just one line : Curent Recovery : ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
and no any second line.
I would click it one more time just to be sure. Once that is done make sure you do the backup as you did previously. As far as your install not working it means that the backup you did didn't work fully, as far as I know.
If you're flashing a ROM make sure it is for your exact phone. Otherwise it won't work or will be extremely buggy.

When I try to flash the CWM in RM all the time same issue. All the time one line. All the time cannot get into recovery (not from CWM or RM position or even by key).
All CF-Root,kernel files that I have are the correct for my phone.
As I said, the problem came out after that I made a flash back of the original kernel to get read of the traingle at the boot.
xda says that when we flash with an original kernel, then we loose the CWM.
I suppose that was the case.
Now I just need the solution for it.
Maybe I just have to flash my phone with the CF-Root?
Your phone is rooted, right?

sdcard/clockworkmod :
I have my firts backup:
sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-01-26.02.25.55
and I see also this:

I have SU and the CWM which is not working
I have also installed the Titanium backup.
SO I have the root.
Ok, one last try then. Click flash clockworkmod recovery and once it says done, before exiting it, click reboot recovery. You can also make a backup through there if you feel like you'd need to. If it goes into CWM then you should be good.
So long as it says "current recovery: x.x.x.x.x." whatever version you have, it should be flashed and you should be fine.

I can't install CWM. I know there's that recovery installer apk but my transformer says there was a problem parsing the package. I don't know of any other way. I also tried unrooting my tablet by flashing a WW stock rom and stock recovery but Superuser stayed and it doesn't even work. It's basically all messed up. Can someone help me please?
Since you went back to stock ROM, do wipe data from boot menu and root again with Vipermod, and then try running the recovery installer apk.
What firmware are you on? That message is either a bad download or your firmware is not compatible with the apk.
Now you also say you flash WW ROM and stock recovery, how did you flash it without cwm?

Yeah you flashed the repacked ROM. That's pretty outdated firmware. You need to manually update to the latest ICS (if it doesn't auto update), use ViperMod to root and RecoveryInstaller for CWM.

How do I manually update? Is that when you go into settings and stuff and check to see if you have the latest software? Cause I do that and it says that I already have the latest version.
I tried updating manually but it didn't work. I guess I should include that I tried deleting the superuser files from /system/bin/su and /system/xbin/su. I deleted the one in the xbin because there wasn't one in the bin. It's still messed up.
Hi everyone! I aware that maybe this is a stupid question, but i have to ask...Is there a way to convert a CWM backup to a flash zip to use with the CWM install zip option??? I'm asking this because I have a particular problem and is that I can't do backups or restore with my CWM so i can't install almost any custom rom that is in the developers forum.
I don't know why i have this problem, even I posted a thread asking for help about this, but I guess I'm the only one experiencing this issue and the only rom I successfully installed is the Victory Rom and is a flashing zip.
By the way I installed the CWM with the Atrix Bootstrap and I applied the patch RAZR-CWMOnBoot-Global-J.Y.Daddy.zip to have the CWM on every boot and I don't experience any GPS issue (I guess i don't know exactly what is the issue) and for the record when I'm trying to do a CWM backup i get the "check sum error" when the CWM tried to finish the backup process, and when i'm attemping to restore a backup the CWM starts without problem but then I get the "Error while restoring /system".
I hope you can helpme with this problem.
Thank's in advanced.

after you apply the atrix bootstrap use rom manager and install the recovery for the droid bionic and you will be able to back up and restore roms. advance restore also works incase you do a wipe, install a rom, and then want your data restored.

You could convert it... but you would have to write an updater-script, and get an updater-binary (you can basically steal it from any flashable zip.)

Well I tried this with no success , I installed the recovery for the droid bionic and then I reboot into recovery with rom manager and make a cwm backup, the result was an error when generating the md5Sum and my battery went from 60% to 3%, that kinda surprise me it's the second time that happens, the first time was when i was updating from stock 2.3.5 to 2.3.6.
Worth the shot i guess but until i can fix this i guess i'm screwed :'( .

That is an interesting point because everything I've done, the rooted, the atrix bootstrap recovery and the CWM on boot patch has been with version stock rom 2.3.6 I never tried do it with the 2.3.5 so i guess i'll be downgrading tonigth to stock 2.3.5.
thank's, when i'm done i will inform of my result.
cheers.

Follow what he said and you will be ok. I've messed this phone up more times than i can count trying to mod and theme stuff and the fkz is a life saver.

It works!!!! it was the stock 2.3.6 update that was stopping me from backup or restore in CWM maybe it changes something in the bootloader that screw the CWM, but now i'm testing the Lithium rom 1.2 . Thank you all for your help and tips.

Sorry for bringing this up again but I need the answer to the
original question on converting a CWM backup to flashable zip...
my question:
My CWM Backup consistes of 7 files:
boot.img
recovery.img
system.yaffs2.img
data.yaffs2.img
cache.yaffs2.img
nandroid.md5
.android_secure.vfat.tar
my guess is that the first two go directly into the update.zip
then What about the other three yaffs2 files and the .android_secure.vfat.tar file
how are they extracted/combined into the zip file??
ps.about the updater-script and updater-binary, can I take them both from any flashable zip?

Its possible, I have done it, and the only foders you need are system and data...
It will be a pain, tho, your gonna wanna do it through Linux, updater script needs to have the right commands in it to do this, so its def not a drag and drop process, even tho some of it is..

I had experience this yesterday when restore using PhilZ v3.81 recovery in my Note 2.. Basically the folder name is critical.. It must remain same as per when the backup folder is created. Else u will got md5 checksum error, if bypass md5 check, than error in /system recovery part. After renam the backup folder to the orig name, the restore is running smooth...

all you need to do is use unyaffs on the system.img and optionally data.img and if will unarchive them, then back it into a zip with the boot.img and build the updater-script!

I would advise against restoring stock recovery via CWM What is it you need the stock one for? You can get the stock one back but if you plan to keep root or get root CWM atm is only way to get it so in the end CWM will need to be put back on if you need root.... But what are you trying to do?
Read dev thread, the answer is there if you want it.

Why don't you just flash 4.1.1 w/Odin? You seem to be going out of your way to make it harder than it should be. Don't know what else to tell you.

My work around for this is the leave the stock recovery, a little pain each time I need to use CWM, but with Triangle away and stock I get OTA updates.
You don,t understand me !
I mean cwm do not allow me to flash update.zip so i want a stock recovery file...
You dont understand them. Flash a stock rom using odin. Or better yet, flash the stock rom you wanted in the first place using odin. If you have cwm right now its likely you are rooted correct? If you are, have you deleted any system apps? If you have the update wouldn't go through anyway. If you are on a custom rom it won't go through anyway. Just use odin and be done with it.

What is the stock version OS for this? I seem to find many answers. Some places list it as 4.0.3, and others list it as 4.0.x or 4.0.?...
Last night I made the horrible choice to update the OS from the stock. Something I had been putting off for months. After I updated it, the system said I had 4.0.3, and there were noticeable changes (the sound that plays when booting up, the infamous 'water drop' sound, the horrible white-washing of the keyboard and sound controls, etc.) Before I decide to try this ROM/Root-ing stuff, I decided to keep updating and see if there were new changes that updated the things I didn't like. No luck. All the things I hate are still present... Current version as reported by the tablet "About device" in settings says 4.1.1 with Kernel 3.0.31-523998 and Build number JRO03C.P5113UECLK7.
I am interested in trying the ROM/Root-ing. But I can't find a solid reference to what version of ICS this came with (unit was purchased in July 2012). The box and every other printed document I could find simply says "Adroid 4.0" or "ICS 4.0", and does not tell me if it is 4.0.3 or 4.0.x or whatever.
I want my normal bootup sound to play. I want these white-washed keyboards and other controls out of here! And for the love of anything, this water drop sound needs to take a dirt nap.
I suppose I would also be happy with anyone who can tell me how to get back the normal dark keyboard and other visuals and/or change the water drop sound back to the simple 'click' that was there before. Although I have already searched for this option and I have not come across these solutions (outside of ROMing and changing the .ogg files around).
ANY help or directions will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance,
capnflummox
The samsung keyboard is the same in all stock firmware for p51xx.
Stock firmware can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1704668
If you have root and su, bring up a shell and execute
# sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
That should restore the stock recovery from the backup partition (the active recovery is in /dev/block/mmcblk0p6 and the backup is installed on p5).
(That normally gets invoked by init.rc at each boot, but CWM marks it as no-execute to keep it from running.)
Almost what I need I think

So this is if you have root, etc. I have a GT-P5113 from a friend. It tried to update and got hung like so many others. My question is, at the fail screen, what do I do to be able to get into Recovery or download mode so I can get this tablet back to life? I have tried everything I can find on the subject...not a lot out there for my situation. Please help!
Thanks
