[Q] CWM Backup issue-how to solve this problem? - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
I'm very happy to be ble to do some changes in my own phone Thanks to you of corse.
I made a root.I had no problem doing it.
I used the Odin and S2 root for it.
After that,I've made the CWM backup. All went nice and without issue. I've also saved the backup on my PC.
Thene I've installed also the Titanium backup. But I just left it like that for the moment.I didn't make any backup with it.
I wanted to get read of the triangle at the boot moment.
To get read of the triangle we need to flash the original kernel (in my case it's KI4).
I did it. Once again all went well.I don't have anymore the triangle.I still have the root (I have Superuser and CWM).
And now the best part.I suppose that it's my fault that it's not working now.
The problem is that before the flash of the original kernel (not to have anymore the triangle) I erased the backup I made before from CWM.
Just don't ask me why.I don't realy know
Now I wont to make the backup by CWM, the phone reboots,I get the window "Android system recovery" and it doesn't make the backup. It gives me the info:
reboot the system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

I even puted back the backup that I've saved into the PC.Then I tried to start one more time a new backup from the CWM,but I get the same screen.
Can anybody help me on this.
Is there some trick to solve the issue?
Maybe I don't know what to do and the answer is simple?
The phone is working fine.
But I would like to be able to make that backup with CWM.
I suppose that it was a mistake to erase the backup
I wait for any feedback.

It may be a stupid question, but the backup is in the right folder? Sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/*The folder with the backup files here*

Something got messed up along the way and you're not booting into CWM anymore. If the phone is still booting normally just go back to ROM Manager and flash CWM again. Boot into recovery and make a nice backup. Don't delete it this time, lol.

You don't have CWM recovery flashed....that is your stock recovery. Boot normally and them flash it from Rom Manager. Once is finished, go to Manage Restore / Backups and try to restore your backup. That should be working. The issue is that when you change your kernel you might have wiped some data...

Ok.So I have to get the Rom Manager (I don't have it yet).
Sorry for the question,I'm a noob : It means that I will have an option in RM to flash CWM?
How do I do it exactly?
I don't want to f..k this up any more.

The CWM I've got it with the CF-Root.
"Boot into recovery" - I'm doing it from CWM or how exactly?

If I understood well your point in that case I can make the "Boot into recovery" from CWM,Am I wright?

As I've wrote before I'm a noob girl if we are talking here about all those changes and flashing.
But trust me,I'm trying to do my best
The same question as for the first post.
After that I will reboot one more time my phone,I have to go to RM and I have to flash it (you meen flash the CWM)?
But how do I do it exactly? I don't have any idea
"Once is finished, go to Manage Restore / Backups" - I'm doing it in CWM or RM
And if I'm doing it with RM it will restore the backup I made previously with the CWM?
After doing what you've said I will be aslo able to use the CWM and go to ClockworkMod Recovery from the position of CWM?
Do I leave the backup which I previously dleted and got it back from my PC and put it into: /mnt/sdcard/cklokworkmod/buckup?
For your info, when I go to CWM,Restore (Restore an existing backup) I see the backup name:
2012-01-26.02.25.55
0 days,10 hours ago,656.1MB
What a shame with all thos noob questions, but only you can help me
Just don't kill me for the spam.
Next time I will try to do it in a good way.I'm talking here about the way I'm posting
Edit: Ok,I was searching and now I know that we have the option in RM : "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" lol
Is there any way to do it without using RM? I was reading that some of people had issue with it and I'm scared.
Anyway can you please just tell me and answer on my noob questions,so I could be sure that I won't make things worse...
I would be grateful.

So I couldn't wait and I got the RM from the Market (version v4.8.1.4).
I've flashed the ClockworkMod Recovery with it (now I have the version 4.0.1.5).
I don't know if it's the good way but my phone wasn't connected to internet. Then RM asked for it,so I turned on the WIFI.RM connected I suppose with internet and installed or flashed me a polish RM version.
Then I went to Manage Restore/Backup (in RM).
I've selected the backup that I had (anyway it was just one which I've copied previously from my PC).
The phone rebooted...
And I got this msg :
reboot the system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
-- Installing package...
Pinding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Instalation aborted.
It means that I cannot still boot into recovery...?
I suppose.
When I try to "Reboot into Recovery" from RM it's still the same msg.
When I do it from CWM,same msg.
More info so it could help you to help me
When I go to SU and I go on CWM I see this in 4 position:
- system/bin/sh
Maybe this bin file has something to do with it?
When I go to CWM in the field kernel I see : Current kernel:Unknown
The CWM from thhe CF-Root has the version V2.0
The CWM in the RM is as I wrote before the version : 4.0.1.5
I don't know if it's normal.
Phone is still working fine,no issue.
What to do in that case?
Please help.

I'm waiting for any reply.and at the same time I'm searching on the forum.
Maybe I can just go to ODIN and one more time make the root?
ODIN + flash the CF-root in PDA and then use S2 root.
Or maybe the issue will solve just flashing the CF-root file in ODIN.
Please, just tell me if I'm right?
I'm scared that I will do it in fiew minutes, because I cannot sit like this second day and I don't won't to make it worste...

Ok, so let's go easy and gentle....if you have Rom Manager installed, then enter RM and the first thing you will see is the option Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery, if you have flashed it before you will two lines behing the title saying Last Recovery Version: xx.x.x and your version....if not you won´t be able to operate anything from there until you install (flash CWM recovery).
Once you are sure that the recovery is installed, then go to Rom Manager and manage Restore and Backups. As I see, you already have a backup, so you can do a new one or restore the existing one just from the Rom Manager...select the folder with the date and time and let the cell work. When is finished, you will be like before....
Don´t root your phone again....you are already rooted. It will only jam you up....

Thank you for a quick answer.
I'm entering to RM
I see first off all : Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
Uder I see just one line : Curent Recovery : ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
What I did I ckliked one more time on flash ClockworkMod...
I ckliked on my phoen name SGS2 (strange the system shows 2 times the SGS2,I took the first one)
Now I see under Flash ClockworkMod Recovery:
Curent Recovery : ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
New Recovery: ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5

When I closed the RM and I get back in, I see under Flash ClockworkMod Recovery just one line : Curent Recovery : ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
and no any second line.

I would click it one more time just to be sure. Once that is done make sure you do the backup as you did previously. As far as your install not working it means that the backup you did didn't work fully, as far as I know.
If you're flashing a ROM make sure it is for your exact phone. Otherwise it won't work or will be extremely buggy.

When I try to flash the CWM in RM all the time same issue. All the time one line. All the time cannot get into recovery (not from CWM or RM position or even by key).
All CF-Root,kernel files that I have are the correct for my phone.
As I said, the problem came out after that I made a flash back of the original kernel to get read of the traingle at the boot.
xda says that when we flash with an original kernel, then we loose the CWM.
I suppose that was the case.
Now I just need the solution for it.
Maybe I just have to flash my phone with the CF-Root?

Your phone is rooted, right?

I'm asking stupid questions
the backup file is in : sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-01-26.02.25.55
The strange thing is that befor I didn't have this, now I see something even more in:
sdcard/clockworkmod :
I have my firts backup:
sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-01-26.02.25.55
and I see also this:
download/2110140492 and 140189054
recovery update/ect,META-INF,res.sbin
recovery eckpoint
.salted_hash
.settings
Maybe it came up when I was treing to make restore of backup...

Yes, it is.
I have SU and the CWM which is not working
I have also installed the Titanium backup.
SO I have the root.

Ok, one last try then. Click flash clockworkmod recovery and once it says done, before exiting it, click reboot recovery. You can also make a backup through there if you feel like you'd need to. If it goes into CWM then you should be good.
So long as it says "current recovery: x.x.x.x.x." whatever version you have, it should be flashed and you should be fine.

Both with the same version number.
When I turn off the WIFI I have just one line
Curent recovery
Normal?

How to install Nandroid on Captivate

Can someone direct me to a "how to" install nandroid for the captivate... I downloaded it, but it was on a thread for the G1, so I'm not sure if the procedure is the same for the captivate.
Thanks!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You need to get clockworkmanager, nandroid is the name for backing up your phone and being able to install that backup. Make sure you check the dev section and read up on the thread for clockworkmanager. You will need to be rooted with busybox and superuser access.
Easyist way is find the one click root on here then root your phone. Then get rom manager off the market and then install it and that will allow you to install clockwork then use rom manager to reboot into recovery then select backup and off you go.
I can tell you its a blessing to have that. Was messing around with trying to get froyo rom on and I had major issues so I just said screw it and restored to jh2 then rooted rom manager then clockwork then nandroid backup was back to my stuff in 10 mins.
Oh and its way worth buying rom manager for the little they charge. Its a great program
Cool, thanks for spelling this out for me... From what I have read before I try anything I need to do a nandroid back up incase something goes wrong so this helps a lot.
Thanks again!

Glad to finally understand what a freakin nandroid is lol...I have been doing it without knowing that was it!
I'm confused...
My captivate is rooted, and I installed ROM manager, but when I get into recovery, there is no option for backup. Any ideas?

reboot into recovery and select reinstall packages
if it reboots back to the recovery screen again, select reinstall packages again. this time you should be in the green clockwork mod screen. select nandroid from the menu and then select backup

You need to do this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804226 just use the version of Odin that you used to install Froyo. This will enable 2e Recovery needed to run ClockworkMod Recovery.
Thanks for that thread, are there any cons to using that kernel? (reading the thread now)

Yup, it was just as simple as you said, thanks! Just made a nandroid backup. And clockwork mod's recovery is great
Im sorry if this is a dumb question...Im brand new to Android. What is Nandroid Backup?
I rooted and did the clockwork/rom manager download and then did this:
How to Install ClockWork Recovery:
1. On the menu there should be an option labeled “FLASH CLOCKWORK RECOVERY.”
Press it.
2. Once a popup says that it has been succesful press “BACKUP CURRENT ROM”
3. Your phone will now restart and backup your ROM
4. If your phone does not start backing up and instead boots into a blue menu use the volume
keys to select reboot now and then press the power button. Try to do all the steps again.
5. Wait for it to finish and then it should restart.
Is this different from a Nandroid backup?
Clockwork, nandroid, both refer to rom manager utilities. Clockwork is the recovery function and nandroid the backup utility.
But you need to select reinstall packages at screen with blue text. Clockwork/nandroid will have green text menu.
Swyped.....you may have to interpret
But im doing both the Clockwork/Nandroid with the Rom manager app correct? I did the reinstall packages and then it showed code scrolling and a status bar that took a minute or two... Is that what you mean? Did I do it right?
Yep....that is a nandroid backup

a issue no one else seems to have
Hey,
I just rooted my phone a few days ago so i could install the lag fix on my captivate. Got it done and it runs great now. I started looking around at these custom ROMs and i'm interested in trying one out, but not with out backing up my stock/rooted rom first in case i screw something up. Here is the prob that i'm having.
I installed Clockwork Rom manager NP. Got Busy box installed already too. I opened up rom manager and hit back/recover and it asked me my phone type. I told it the captivate. It downloaded recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip into a recoveries directory. Next i clicked on the fix permissions and let it do its thing. Now i clicked on backup current ROM clicked ok for the default name. Phone reboots into recover mode and pops up with.
update media, finished
--install from package....
Finding update package...
opening update package...
E:can't open /cache/update.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
I hit reinstall packages and it gives me the same error.
The only thing that i have try was renaming the recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip to update.zip and dropping it in the main directory but it had the same effect.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Get and update.
I re-dropped the recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip as update.zip in the main dir. and hit backup current mod.
I clicked reinstall packages and it went into the manual mode, hit reinstall pages again and it has seemed to work.
I will give and update if it does not. Thanks again.
Guys,
One thing I am not sure of. I got a brand new Captivate with Stock JF6. I have another one running Froyo.
If I take backup of current new phone via CWM (nandroid) and restore it on the other one.
Is there any trouble expected ???
One I know that files in /efs may get screwed up as it has IMEI related entries too ... but I am not sure.
I am listening.

Put this on your internal SD card along with your ROM of choice. Reboot in to recovery and install packages 2 times. The second time it will be in clockwork recovery and you can flash your ROM.
I just had the same problem after doing countless ROM flashes in the past. Perhaps its something in their server preventing the download of CWM? Anyways, thanks for the .zip. Worked like a charm!
yes thank you very much for that zip u saved my life well appreciated
Keep that .zip on your HDD and you can bypass Rom Manager (and all the associated problems) altogether.
I have my phone rooted and unlocked. It's the AT&T Captivate but I'm using it on T-Mobile. I've had no problems so far with it.
I downloaded Clockwork's Rom Manager (v3.0.0.7) and tried to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to begin experimenting with ROMs.
When I click on that it tells me "An error occurred while downloading your recovery."
I have over 4 gigs of memory left and I have 3 bars on 3g and WiFi going. No internet connection problems (i checked the net using market and using the browser, it works fine.)
What else could be causing the problems.
I'm just wanting to get a good stable rom going which ditches all the junk AT&T put on the phone.

if the update.zip is already on your /sdcard/ then there is no reason to try and download/flash clockwork recovery.....thats what the update.zip IS
thats what i thuoght but not true. even goin in normal recovery and selecting to install packages gets a error some about no such directory or something even though updat.zip is there even fix permissions gives a error
I'm having the exact same problem. After reading the development section I have decided to flash a custom rom from my stock rom. Installed "Rom manger" from market, then tried to run the "recovery" got the same error msg. Also uploaded the update.zip to my /sdcard the I got the below errors:

Did you flash back to stock JF6 first not JI6?
try this cuz this is what i did and the update.zip worked just fine for me
1. one click back to stock jf6
2. master clear
3. root with galaxy s one click root
(after the root there should be an update.zip in your sdcard)
4. replace the update.zip in the root of your sd card with the one here posted which is the clockwork recovery one and if you want while u do that you can throw in the rom that you want to flash in there as well to kill 2 birds with one stone
(i will re post the update.zip for cwm just in case)
5. power off the phone and boot into stock recovery and hit reinstall packages two times
6. you should now be in clockwork mod recovery and can now flash the rom of your choice
this is what i did and everything went smoothly but this is just me if this helps someone else plz let me know if this works for you
p.s. i will make a video if needed just ask
Try This
After flashing back to stock do a master clear from Odin3
Put update.zip onto internal sd
Boot into recovery
Reinstall packages
After boot enable USB debugging and mock locations
Get Rom Manager from market
Start Rom Manager
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
Flash away

You guys are making it harder then necessary, the update zip I posted is the clockwork recovery MOD, just flash stock, reboot into recovery and reinstall packages 2 times and you will be in the green clockwork recovery then you can install zip from sd and choose your ROM you placed on your internal sd card. No need to root every again as long as you keep this update zip handy.
I too am having problems with Rom Manager. I just wanted to change modems. No go. So I used the power button to go into Recovery mode, picked the modem file, flashed it then told the menu to reboot system.

[Q] I need help, bad.

Ok so my nephew got a hold of my phone and i'm not quite sure what he did. I had my nexus rooted and I guess he tried to install the new OTA, it didn't work so he wiped the memory card and cache etc..
now the phone doesn't go past the bootloader. Is that what it's called? the androids on it and the options are Reboot bootloader, reboot, recovery, and power off.
when I plug the phone in it doesn't get detected. Am i completely screwed here? Please let me know. I tried searching but I realized i'm not quite sure what to even search for. Any and all help is greatley appreciated!!
it doesn't sound like you are screwed but you may have lost all your data not found in the /sdcard. a few questions; did you have a custom recovery installed? and can you get to recovery?
If you can't even get into recovery then you will have to use fastboot to flash your phone. it's not hard just search for the specifics.
Thank you! yeah I have clockwork mod v 3.0.0.5 i was playing around with that and there is a recovery option.
i was also reading about a nandroid backup (lol not too sure what it is). but it looks like i have to go into recovery and load that file. if i click on mount store or whatever it recognizes on my pc. im currently trying that and keeping my fingers crossed. if not ill have to look into reflashing the phone. hope i fix this. thanks a lot though at least i have another option hah!
Look at the top of your phone. It should say something in red text.
Usually this means you've lost the Boot.img or System.img so the phone can't boot. Pushing a custom recovery like Clockwork then flashing a ROM/restoring NAND backup will fix it.
1. Download http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884093
2. Mount it on your computer, enable USB storage in Clockwork Recovery
3. Paste it in there.
4. Unmount
5. Nandroid restore from that file
--- OR ---
1. Download a custom ROM (i recommend cyanogenmod because its awesome.. just my opinion -- flash gapps after CM7).
2. flash the ROM
3. there you go
but if you want OTAs and stuff like that.. use nandroid backup
FIXED!!! thanks dude. i pretty much had this last part figured out but was a bit hesitant to try it. instructions helped a huge deal.
thanks guys. really appreciate the help. saved me a heart attack haha

[Q] How do I install the Revolver ROM?

I searched this forum a bit and I can't find a nice guide. I am currently running rooted .19 on my TF101, B70KAS. Is it as simple as dropping the ROM on my internal SD and letting it update to the latest Revolver release (based on .21)? Or can I do it with booting into recovery mode? This is my first tablet and I have no clowworkmod on my tablet... do I need to flash that somehow? Where's a guide?
thanks!

I am very familiar with CWM, flashing, nandroid backups, etc. I've had a nexus one for a long long time. I just can't find any good stickies on how to install CWM on my tablet, which I assume is my first step, though I find it odd there are no stickies. On the Nexus One forum there are lots! Where can I learn about installing CWM on my tablet with stock (but rooted) .19 FW?

Search for RecoveryInstaller in the Themes and Apps section.
One click CWM installer, don't get any easier than that.
I had the Same issue coming from the nexus s. the tricky bit is that rom manager does not support the transformer. I've got a galaxy tab 10.1 as well and flashing over a custom recovery was easy as pie.
anyway, what you have to do is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213723
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093818)
then you need to install an app (i use reboot2recovery) from the marketplace to get into the custom recovery. i've tried quickboot or rom manager but all it does it take me to a black screen or reboot the device. reboot2recovery will actually drop you into clockworkmod recovery. from there, do your nandroid backup. you'll need an SD card in your transformer for it to actually go ahead with the backup.
aside: from my reading, the backup should backup to internal storage with that modded clockwork. i've never been able to get it to work though. anyway, just use an SD card for now so you can get through the difficult stuff.
so at this point uve done the following:
installed clockwordmod using the first 2 links and installed the reboot2recovery APK to get into recovery.
now you have an SD card in your transformer and you are doing a nandroid backup.
once completed, put the 200+mb revolver rom on the root of your SD card. you may also want to put another kernel. i use the one recommended by revolver.
now just wipe the cache, data, etc as usual. now flash the rom, reboot the system when completed. plug in your gmail account, wifi password etc. and then reinstall the reboot2recovery apk. now reboot to recovery and then flash the kernel. reboot and ure good to go. install revolver parts to allow for additional tweaking and OTA updating.
i got my transformer from bestbuy this thanksgiving and went to revolver 3.9.5 immediately. last night i actually flashed revolver 3.11 right over it. not a single problem.
edit: reading the above post, i remember that my FIRST recovery installation was using that one-click tool and, as was said, it works flawlessly. you still need the reboot2recovery though. and recoveryinstaller WILL NOT install the modified for internal storage version of clockwork. i'm thinking maybe i just havent tried backing up since updating to the internal storage version, which is why i think i've "never gotten it to work"

Awesome, I had tried it earlier and it didn't do anything. Then I realized that my superuser app was FCing, however I could still use adb shell and su just fine! After I realized there was an update for the superuser app, I installed it. Everything is perfect now.

It mean open your command prompt in your computer fire up the ADB server and type
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Why why not download the reboot recovery app from the market?

Rooting alone does not install CWM recovery.

[Q] Converting CWM backup to flash zip ??

Hi everyone! I aware that maybe this is a stupid question, but i have to ask...Is there a way to convert a CWM backup to a flash zip to use with the CWM install zip option??? I'm asking this because I have a particular problem and is that I can't do backups or restore with my CWM so i can't install almost any custom rom that is in the developers forum.
I don't know why i have this problem, even I posted a thread asking for help about this, but I guess I'm the only one experiencing this issue and the only rom I successfully installed is the Victory Rom and is a flashing zip.
By the way I installed the CWM with the Atrix Bootstrap and I applied the patch RAZR-CWMOnBoot-Global-J.Y.Daddy.zip to have the CWM on every boot and I don't experience any GPS issue (I guess i don't know exactly what is the issue) and for the record when I'm trying to do a CWM backup i get the "check sum error" when the CWM tried to finish the backup process, and when i'm attemping to restore a backup the CWM starts without problem but then I get the "Error while restoring /system".
I hope you can helpme with this problem.
Thank's in advanced.

after you apply the atrix bootstrap use rom manager and install the recovery for the droid bionic and you will be able to back up and restore roms. advance restore also works incase you do a wipe, install a rom, and then want your data restored.

You could convert it... but you would have to write an updater-script, and get an updater-binary (you can basically steal it from any flashable zip.)

Well I tried this with no success , I installed the recovery for the droid bionic and then I reboot into recovery with rom manager and make a cwm backup, the result was an error when generating the md5Sum and my battery went from 60% to 3%, that kinda surprise me it's the second time that happens, the first time was when i was updating from stock 2.3.5 to 2.3.6.
Worth the shot i guess but until i can fix this i guess i'm screwed :'( .

Sorry for bringing this up again but I need the answer to the
original question on converting a CWM backup to flashable zip...
my question:
My CWM Backup consistes of 7 files:
boot.img
recovery.img
system.yaffs2.img
data.yaffs2.img
cache.yaffs2.img
nandroid.md5
.android_secure.vfat.tar
my guess is that the first two go directly into the update.zip
then What about the other three yaffs2 files and the .android_secure.vfat.tar file
how are they extracted/combined into the zip file??
ps.about the updater-script and updater-binary, can I take them both from any flashable zip?

Its possible, I have done it, and the only foders you need are system and data...
It will be a pain, tho, your gonna wanna do it through Linux, updater script needs to have the right commands in it to do this, so its def not a drag and drop process, even tho some of it is..

all you need to do is use unyaffs on the system.img and optionally data.img and if will unarchive them, then back it into a zip with the boot.img and build the updater-script!
