How to install Nandroid on Captivate - Captivate General

Can someone direct me to a "how to" install nandroid for the captivate... I downloaded it, but it was on a thread for the G1, so I'm not sure if the procedure is the same for the captivate.
Thanks!

You need to get clockworkmanager, nandroid is the name for backing up your phone and being able to install that backup. Make sure you check the dev section and read up on the thread for clockworkmanager. You will need to be rooted with busybox and superuser access.

Easyist way is find the one click root on here then root your phone. Then get rom manager off the market and then install it and that will allow you to install clockwork then use rom manager to reboot into recovery then select backup and off you go.
I can tell you its a blessing to have that. Was messing around with trying to get froyo rom on and I had major issues so I just said screw it and restored to jh2 then rooted rom manager then clockwork then nandroid backup was back to my stuff in 10 mins.
Oh and its way worth buying rom manager for the little they charge. Its a great program

Cool, thanks for spelling this out for me... From what I have read before I try anything I need to do a nandroid back up incase something goes wrong so this helps a lot.
Thanks again!

Glad to finally understand what a freakin nandroid is lol...I have been doing it without knowing that was it!

I'm confused...
My captivate is rooted, and I installed ROM manager, but when I get into recovery, there is no option for backup. Any ideas?

reboot into recovery and select reinstall packages
if it reboots back to the recovery screen again, select reinstall packages again. this time you should be in the green clockwork mod screen. select nandroid from the menu and then select backup
done

Any way to do a nandroid backup from the clockwork mod on JI6 (froyo) since the recovery screen won't install the unsigned update.zip that ROM manager uses to enable clockwork mod recovery?

You need to do this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804226 just use the version of Odin that you used to install Froyo. This will enable 2e Recovery needed to run ClockworkMod Recovery.

Thanks for that thread, are there any cons to using that kernel? (reading the thread now)

None for me so far. I've been running it about 2 weeks now and I have no problems.

Thanks, I'm in the process of flashing it now

The kernel flash is easy, it takes 30 seconds. Enjoy.

Yup, it was just as simple as you said, thanks! Just made a nandroid backup. And clockwork mod's recovery is great

Im sorry if this is a dumb question...Im brand new to Android. What is Nandroid Backup?
I rooted and did the clockwork/rom manager download and then did this:
How to Install ClockWork Recovery:
1. On the menu there should be an option labeled “FLASH CLOCKWORK RECOVERY.”
Press it.
2. Once a popup says that it has been succesful press “BACKUP CURRENT ROM”
3. Your phone will now restart and backup your ROM
4. If your phone does not start backing up and instead boots into a blue menu use the volume
keys to select reboot now and then press the power button. Try to do all the steps again.
5. Wait for it to finish and then it should restart.
Is this different from a Nandroid backup?

Clockwork, nandroid, both refer to rom manager utilities. Clockwork is the recovery function and nandroid the backup utility.
But you need to select reinstall packages at screen with blue text. Clockwork/nandroid will have green text menu.
Swyped.....you may have to interpret

But im doing both the Clockwork/Nandroid with the Rom manager app correct? I did the reinstall packages and then it showed code scrolling and a status bar that took a minute or two... Is that what you mean? Did I do it right?

Yep....that is a nandroid backup
Swyped.....you may have to interpret

a issue no one else seems to have
Hey,
I just rooted my phone a few days ago so i could install the lag fix on my captivate. Got it done and it runs great now. I started looking around at these custom ROMs and i'm interested in trying one out, but not with out backing up my stock/rooted rom first in case i screw something up. Here is the prob that i'm having.
I installed Clockwork Rom manager NP. Got Busy box installed already too. I opened up rom manager and hit back/recover and it asked me my phone type. I told it the captivate. It downloaded recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip into a recoveries directory. Next i clicked on the fix permissions and let it do its thing. Now i clicked on backup current ROM clicked ok for the default name. Phone reboots into recover mode and pops up with.
update media, finished
--install from package....
Finding update package...
opening update package...
E:can't open /cache/update.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
I hit reinstall packages and it gives me the same error.
The only thing that i have try was renaming the recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip to update.zip and dropping it in the main directory but it had the same effect.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Get and update.
I re-dropped the recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip as update.zip in the main dir. and hit backup current mod.
I clicked reinstall packages and it went into the manual mode, hit reinstall pages again and it has seemed to work.
I will give and update if it does not. Thanks again.

Guys,
One thing I am not sure of. I got a brand new Captivate with Stock JF6. I have another one running Froyo.
If I take backup of current new phone via CWM (nandroid) and restore it on the other one.
Is there any trouble expected ???
One I know that files in /efs may get screwed up as it has IMEI related entries too ... but I am not sure.
I am listening.

******THIS IS NOT MY WORK, I JUST PUT THIS TOGETHER BECAUSE I HAD SUCCESS IN ROOTING AND GETTING FASTBOOT SO I THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE. THANKS TO ALL OF THOSE WHO PROVIDED THE FILES FOR THIS TO BE POSSIBLE....FREEZA, UNREVOKED AND I'M SURE I'M MISSING OTHERS, BUT THANKS.********
So i wanted to write this up because i was helping tirelessly over at another thread and i kept answering the same questions over and over so here we go..
1-we will grab unrevoked 3 from UnrEvOked.com
2-we will also grab the modified usb drivers from the same site (click on unrevoked 3 and then click "more info" and read half way down and download the modified usb drivers)
****(disconnect from internet)******
3-ok now uninstalled htc sync, and htc drivers, also htc driver installer. Open programs and features, find htc sync and htc driver installer and uninstall both.
******(plug phone into pc)
4- Next go to device manager and find adb/android device and uninstall driver/device (if available make sure to check box to remove driver), then when that is done (might have to unplug and replug phone in first) right click and select update driver software. Then browse your computer for where you unzipped your modified usb drivers we downloaded from unrevoked and install.
*****(connect back to internet)*******
5-Now double click the reflash.exe we downloaded from unrevoked and follow the prompts and wait. It takes a little bit and just follow the instructions. YOU SHOULD NOW HAVE ROOT!!!!
6-Boot phone up, download rom manager from market, install and open the app, at top it wil say flash recovery, do so and chose evo 4g and flash.
7-Back to unrevoked.com and download unrevoked forever. Plug your phone in, select usb mass storage, drag the unrevoked forever.zip onto your sdcard.
8-now unplug phone and go to rom manager, open and chose flash from sd card, chose unrevoked-forever.zip, choose the checkmarks backup rom....always do this before making changes. and click ok, then ok. Let rom manager do its thing. Now you have s-off root at the radio level.
9-Once phone is rebooted go to this site http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=752832 and download the 1st post file, its a pc36img.zip. We will put this on the root of our sd card.
10-once we have it on the root of the sdcard, we go to rom manager, select flash rom from sdcard, chose pc36img.zip and backup rom and click ok, then ok. Wait for it to backup, flash and finish.
******(now when it boots back up you might get stuck on the hboot screen, thats ok, pull the battery and then replace the battery, hold volume down button and power at same time, hold until clockwork recovery comes up, go to nandroid, and restore your previous backup you made.)
11-ALL DONE, YOU HAVE ROOT, NAND UNLOCKED, ENG HBOOT FOR FASTBOOT COMMANDS!!!! ENJOY!!!
ANYONE HAVING TROUBLE GETTING INTO RECOVERY---- WHEN IN ROM MANAGER SCROLL TOWARD BOTTOM AND FLASH ALTERNATIVE RECOVERY AND USE RA...THANKS TGRUENDLER FOR TESTING THAT OUT!
*****RESERVED******
My HBOOT still says 0.93.0000 is this correct ?
EDIT: ok now I got it, HBOOT is 0.76.2000 and yes I'm stuck on HBOOT screen but this is a new phone that never even had service so no nand back up. Now what?
Should have backed up, take out sd card, put in computer put rom on it, put back in phone, hold vol down and power boot to recovery and flash rom

Noob question:
I have a totally stock, non-rooted phone. All I am looking to do it get Root so I can use the wifi-tether app but keep everything that I have the same. If I get to step 5 above, from what I am reading, I will have everything that I have now plus root? Then after that I am guessing I would need the superuser app and the wifi-tether app and I would be golden? I am not looking to flash ROMS or backups and such. Just wifi-tether.

Yes, you should always have a backup of your rom and nand......when you flash rom manager....you should make a nandroid backup of your stock rooted rom...
Cool...thanks alot for this!
Edit:
Finished rooting and everything went great following these instructions. I am backing up my Stock Rooted ROM right now. Cannot wait for wifi-tether. Cannot believe I did not do this sooner

OK, having one issue. Everything works great except I cannot boot into Recovery. I have ROM Manager installed and under Recovery it states: Current Recover: ClockWorkMod 2.5.0.1
When I try to do any backup or reboot into recovery, I get the white HTC EVO 4G splashscreen and it just sits there. I let it sit there for well over 20 minutes. I pulled the battery and it restarts just fine. If I hold down the Power/vol down button from the off state, I get the screen that says:
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.97.0000
ECT....
When I select Recovery, I just get the splash screen again and it just sits there.
Any thoughts?

what steps did you follow, all of them, or did you stop somwhere...you said you were backing up your rom..how did you do that..
I went all the way through step 6. Was trying to do a backup from Rom Manager.
download superuser from market, install, then reinstall rom manager. INstall and flash recovery..then in rom manager go to bottom and select repair permissions...reboot and try, if that doesn't work then in rom manager scroll to bottom and select flash alternative recovery and select amon or RA same thing..and try again..let me know..
people that have problems with recovery usually didn't uninstall device/driver before installing new modified usb drivers from unrevoked..see step 4 in guide......try doing this and rerunning unrevoked..
Amon-RA works flawlessly but Clock-work does not. I will try a couple of different versions of clockwork to see if I can get one to work. Thanks for the info.

Since your already rooted, the easiest way to put a recovery on the phone is with clockwork mod.
Go to the market, search for clockworkmod, scroll all the way down and download "Rom Manager"-Free version.
After install, open the Rom Manager app, and the first option will be to flash clockworkmod recovery. It will do everything for you to flash recovery.
Once flashed, simply shut the phone down, and when you turn the phone on, press and hold the home button till you get to recovery. To do a nandroid backup, scroll down to nandroid, and select backup. Done.
to flash a rom afterward, place the rom's zip file on your sdcard, reboot to recovery, select to clear system/user settings, scroll down to yes, then back in the main page of recovery, go to flash zip file, select zip, and then select the zip file from the list. After that is done, select reboot to boot into the new rom.
DONE!
thank you that was exactly what i needed

Cant update ROM. What am I doing wrong

I have a NS unlocked and rooted. I have ROM Manager, busybox etc. I followed all the instructions but I can't update ROMs or the 2.3.3 update or CM7 nothing. Each time it starts to unpack or whatever it gets about 1/3 the way and aborts. Something about verifying signatures or something.
Very frustrating.
Thanx in advance

try to download the ROM again
sounds like the zip file is corrupted
What version Clockwork Recovery are you using? Try reverting back to a older version or something.
Verify the ROM's MD5 Hash using HashTab (Google it)
I've tried several times with downloads and now the latest clockwork and the version prior.
Samething always aborts, can't verify signature. Tried manual and through rom manager.
When using rom manager is that suppose to do the whole install? Cuz that only gets me to the little droid and the triangle. I have to get myself into bootloader and continue manually from there.
Thanks

Hmm... It sounds like clockwork isn't properly installed. ROM Manager should take you directly to clockwork recovery without you having to do anything.
the problem you are facing is that you are still on stock rom. so even if you flash clockwork recovery and then reboot to recovery, you'll always end up going to the stock recovery. this is a new feature implemented by google.
what you should do is...
1) go to bootloader
2)flash the clockwork recovery using fastboot
3)DO NOT reboot the phone or quit bootloader. immediately after flashing the rec. using fastboot, just enter recovery (through bootloader)
4)flash you new rom
just for u to have an idea. the recovery should be orange in colour.
option 2.
you also have the option of using a file manager with moun/root functions such as root explorer and rename the recovery script in etc folder but i guess step 1 is much easier for now.
OK I played alot today and this is what happened.
After fixing permissions and flashing the new CWM and wiping data/cache it finally worked. Unfortunately titanium and my backup didnt bring everything over. So I went back and forth between stock and CM7 several times but I just couldnt get all my stuff back in CM7. So I thought Id try the 2.3.3 update but not wiping stuff. That didnt work. Then I tried one more time with CM7 but not wiping. I couldnt get pastthe little CM7 droid on the skateboard. So went back to stock for now. Ill have more time on Sat to give things another try.
At least I can get in it now.
Any ideas/thoughts/
Thanks and sorry for the long post.

[Q] ClockworkMod Recovery, ROM Manager, and Nandroid confusion

So I'm trying to update my rooted 3.0.1 euro 3G xoom to the 3.2 Hammerhead ROM, and here's something that is really confusing me:
I've installed ROM Manager 4.3.3.0 from the Market. Then I downloaded and flashed ClockworkMod Recovery 3.2.0.0 R4c via this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074979
So far so good: I can boot to recovery and it looks that everything is working nicely... with the exception of the following:
1) Even though I have CWM installed, ROM Manager won't recognize it. It keeps asking to install it. I haven't done that though because I don't want to overwrite the one I flashed... how can I get ROM Manager to recognize CWM? Or, if I install a different CWM version through the ROM Manager interface, will that overwrite the existing install, or even break something?
2) I can't find Nandroid in the recovery menu of 3.2.0.0 R4c. It says that it should be there in the Wiki (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=How_to_backup_or_recover_via_Nandroid), but no sir. I only have the options Backup and Advanced Backup in recovery; it doesn't say Nandroid anywhere.
The thing is - I made a normal backup and it created a folder with .img files in it, along with a nandroid.md5 file. So is this a full Nandroid backup or not? And should it not be a zip file? Meaning - will I be able to revert to this backup through ROM Manager or CWM later if it's not a zip?
3) Lastly, I want to install the Tiamat 2.1 Hammerhead ROM. solarnz writes in the instructions in step 6 to "install the rom". So do I do that from recovery? Or from ROM Manager? Which brings me back to my first problem, that ROM Manager won't recognize CWM and won't let me install a ROM without it.
Also - can I install the Hammerhead ROM from my rooted 3.0.1 device at all, or should I install 3.1 first?
I know these are a lot of questions all at once, but after hours and hours of searching and reading (and learning a lot!), I still can't figure this part out.
Many thanks to anyone who can help me make sense of this!

Forget about Rom Manager. You have the correct recovery installed and you have made a "nandroid" backup when you used the backup option in CWM recovery 3.2.0.0 R4c. The Rom you want to flash needs to be on your MicroSD card and that needs to be in your Xoom when you boot into recovery. It is from the CWM recovery menu that you will choose to flash the zip file that will install the Rom. You will need to be able to boot into recovery and you can do it by pressing volume up and power to get to dual core screen, then after 3 seconds, press volume down then volume up and you should be in recovery. Or you could download Quick Boot from the market and use its boot into recovery option (that's what I do).
About the version you need to be on to flash Hammerhead...what does it say? I think you may need to be on 3.1 but just read the OP on the Hammerhead thread...it will tell you the requirements.
Good luck!
Thanks a lot for explaining that okantomi, that's very helpful and reassuring!
The only thing I'm left with now is to figure out the version part... the rom OP doesn't say anything about a required version. Here's the thread btw: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203635
I made my way through the first 18 or so pages of the 434 total pages in that thread, but still couldn't find any info on that. I'll keep looking - not giving up
Quick update... I decided to just go for it. I flashed the 3.2 ROM onto 3.0.1 - it worked perfectly without any hiccups whatsoever. I'm now running Androud 3.2 with 3G and it works beautifully. Can you see that I'm smiling?

[Q] CWM Backup issue-how to solve this problem?

Hi,
I'm very happy to be ble to do some changes in my own phone Thanks to you of corse.
I made a root.I had no problem doing it.
I used the Odin and S2 root for it.
After that,I've made the CWM backup. All went nice and without issue. I've also saved the backup on my PC.
Thene I've installed also the Titanium backup. But I just left it like that for the moment.I didn't make any backup with it.
I wanted to get read of the triangle at the boot moment.
To get read of the triangle we need to flash the original kernel (in my case it's KI4).
I did it. Once again all went well.I don't have anymore the triangle.I still have the root (I have Superuser and CWM).
And now the best part.I suppose that it's my fault that it's not working now.
The problem is that before the flash of the original kernel (not to have anymore the triangle) I erased the backup I made before from CWM.
Just don't ask me why.I don't realy know
Now I wont to make the backup by CWM, the phone reboots,I get the window "Android system recovery" and it doesn't make the backup. It gives me the info:
reboot the system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

I even puted back the backup that I've saved into the PC.Then I tried to start one more time a new backup from the CWM,but I get the same screen.
Can anybody help me on this.
Is there some trick to solve the issue?
Maybe I don't know what to do and the answer is simple?
The phone is working fine.
But I would like to be able to make that backup with CWM.
I suppose that it was a mistake to erase the backup
I wait for any feedback.
My phone information:
Samsung GS2
Android 2.3.5
Kernel XXKI4
GINGERBREAD
XEO
Rooted
It may be a stupid question, but the backup is in the right folder? Sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/*The folder with the backup files here*

Something got messed up along the way and you're not booting into CWM anymore. If the phone is still booting normally just go back to ROM Manager and flash CWM again. Boot into recovery and make a nice backup. Don't delete it this time, lol.

You don't have CWM recovery flashed....that is your stock recovery. Boot normally and them flash it from Rom Manager. Once is finished, go to Manage Restore / Backups and try to restore your backup. That should be working. The issue is that when you change your kernel you might have wiped some data...

Ok.So I have to get the Rom Manager (I don't have it yet).
Sorry for the question,I'm a noob : It means that I will have an option in RM to flash CWM?
How do I do it exactly?
I don't want to f..k this up any more.

The CWM I've got it with the CF-Root.
"Boot into recovery" - I'm doing it from CWM or how exactly?

If I understood well your point in that case I can make the "Boot into recovery" from CWM,Am I wright?

As I've wrote before I'm a noob girl if we are talking here about all those changes and flashing.
But trust me,I'm trying to do my best
The same question as for the first post.
After that I will reboot one more time my phone,I have to go to RM and I have to flash it (you meen flash the CWM)?
But how do I do it exactly? I don't have any idea
"Once is finished, go to Manage Restore / Backups" - I'm doing it in CWM or RM
And if I'm doing it with RM it will restore the backup I made previously with the CWM?
After doing what you've said I will be aslo able to use the CWM and go to ClockworkMod Recovery from the position of CWM?
Do I leave the backup which I previously dleted and got it back from my PC and put it into: /mnt/sdcard/cklokworkmod/buckup?
For your info, when I go to CWM,Restore (Restore an existing backup) I see the backup name:
2012-01-26.02.25.55
0 days,10 hours ago,656.1MB
What a shame with all thos noob questions, but only you can help me
Just don't kill me for the spam.
Next time I will try to do it in a good way.I'm talking here about the way I'm posting
Edit: Ok,I was searching and now I know that we have the option in RM : "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" lol
Is there any way to do it without using RM? I was reading that some of people had issue with it and I'm scared.
Anyway can you please just tell me and answer on my noob questions,so I could be sure that I won't make things worse...
I would be grateful.
So I couldn't wait and I got the RM from the Market (version v4.8.1.4).
I've flashed the ClockworkMod Recovery with it (now I have the version 4.0.1.5).
I don't know if it's the good way but my phone wasn't connected to internet. Then RM asked for it,so I turned on the WIFI.RM connected I suppose with internet and installed or flashed me a polish RM version.
Then I went to Manage Restore/Backup (in RM).
I've selected the backup that I had (anyway it was just one which I've copied previously from my PC).
The phone rebooted...
And I got this msg :
reboot the system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
-- Installing package...
Pinding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Instalation aborted.
It means that I cannot still boot into recovery...?
I suppose.
When I try to "Reboot into Recovery" from RM it's still the same msg.
When I do it from CWM,same msg.
More info so it could help you to help me
When I go to SU and I go on CWM I see this in 4 position:
- system/bin/sh
Maybe this bin file has something to do with it?
When I go to CWM in the field kernel I see : Current kernel:Unknown
The CWM from thhe CF-Root has the version V2.0
The CWM in the RM is as I wrote before the version : 4.0.1.5
I don't know if it's normal.
Phone is still working fine,no issue.
What to do in that case?
Please help.
I'm waiting for any reply.and at the same time I'm searching on the forum.
Maybe I can just go to ODIN and one more time make the root?
ODIN + flash the CF-root in PDA and then use S2 root.
Or maybe the issue will solve just flashing the CF-root file in ODIN.
Please, just tell me if I'm right?
I'm scared that I will do it in fiew minutes, because I cannot sit like this second day and I don't won't to make it worste...

Ok, so let's go easy and gentle....if you have Rom Manager installed, then enter RM and the first thing you will see is the option Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery, if you have flashed it before you will two lines behing the title saying Last Recovery Version: xx.x.x and your version....if not you won´t be able to operate anything from there until you install (flash CWM recovery).
Once you are sure that the recovery is installed, then go to Rom Manager and manage Restore and Backups. As I see, you already have a backup, so you can do a new one or restore the existing one just from the Rom Manager...select the folder with the date and time and let the cell work. When is finished, you will be like before....
Don´t root your phone again....you are already rooted. It will only jam you up....

Thank you for a quick answer.
I'm entering to RM
I see first off all : Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
Uder I see just one line : Curent Recovery : ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
What I did I ckliked one more time on flash ClockworkMod...
I ckliked on my phoen name SGS2 (strange the system shows 2 times the SGS2,I took the first one)
Now I see under Flash ClockworkMod Recovery:
Curent Recovery : ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
New Recovery: ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
When I closed the RM and I get back in, I see under Flash ClockworkMod Recovery just one line : Curent Recovery : ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5
and no any second line.
I would click it one more time just to be sure. Once that is done make sure you do the backup as you did previously. As far as your install not working it means that the backup you did didn't work fully, as far as I know.
If you're flashing a ROM make sure it is for your exact phone. Otherwise it won't work or will be extremely buggy.

When I try to flash the CWM in RM all the time same issue. All the time one line. All the time cannot get into recovery (not from CWM or RM position or even by key).
All CF-Root,kernel files that I have are the correct for my phone.
As I said, the problem came out after that I made a flash back of the original kernel to get read of the traingle at the boot.
xda says that when we flash with an original kernel, then we loose the CWM.
I suppose that was the case.
Now I just need the solution for it.
Maybe I just have to flash my phone with the CF-Root?
Your phone is rooted, right?

I'm asking stupid questions
the backup file is in : sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-01-26.02.25.55
The strange thing is that befor I didn't have this, now I see something even more in:
sdcard/clockworkmod :
I have my firts backup:
sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-01-26.02.25.55
and I see also this:
download/2110140492 and 140189054
recovery update/ect,META-INF,res.sbin
recovery eckpoint
.salted_hash
.settings
Maybe it came up when I was treing to make restore of backup...

Yes, it is.
I have SU and the CWM which is not working
I have also installed the Titanium backup.
SO I have the root.
Ok, one last try then. Click flash clockworkmod recovery and once it says done, before exiting it, click reboot recovery. You can also make a backup through there if you feel like you'd need to. If it goes into CWM then you should be good.
So long as it says "current recovery: x.x.x.x.x." whatever version you have, it should be flashed and you should be fine.

When I turn off the WIFI I have just one line
Curent recovery

Did Like you said, still the same msg ... no recovery mode...
