**GUIDE**How to root 3.29.651.5 and have fastboot 10/06/2010 - EVO 4G Android Development

******THIS IS NOT MY WORK, I JUST PUT THIS TOGETHER BECAUSE I HAD SUCCESS IN ROOTING AND GETTING FASTBOOT SO I THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE. THANKS TO ALL OF THOSE WHO PROVIDED THE FILES FOR THIS TO BE POSSIBLE....FREEZA, UNREVOKED AND I'M SURE I'M MISSING OTHERS, BUT THANKS.********
So i wanted to write this up because i was helping tirelessly over at another thread and i kept answering the same questions over and over so here we go..
1-we will grab unrevoked 3 from UnrEvOked.com
2-we will also grab the modified usb drivers from the same site (click on unrevoked 3 and then click "more info" and read half way down and download the modified usb drivers)
****(disconnect from internet)******
3-ok now uninstalled htc sync, and htc drivers, also htc driver installer. Open programs and features, find htc sync and htc driver installer and uninstall both.
******(plug phone into pc)
4- Next go to device manager and find adb/android device and uninstall driver/device (if available make sure to check box to remove driver), then when that is done (might have to unplug and replug phone in first) right click and select update driver software. Then browse your computer for where you unzipped your modified usb drivers we downloaded from unrevoked and install.
*****(connect back to internet)*******
5-Now double click the reflash.exe we downloaded from unrevoked and follow the prompts and wait. It takes a little bit and just follow the instructions. YOU SHOULD NOW HAVE ROOT!!!!
6-Boot phone up, download rom manager from market, install and open the app, at top it wil say flash recovery, do so and chose evo 4g and flash.
7-Back to unrevoked.com and download unrevoked forever. Plug your phone in, select usb mass storage, drag the unrevoked forever.zip onto your sdcard.
8-now unplug phone and go to rom manager, open and chose flash from sd card, chose unrevoked-forever.zip, choose the checkmarks backup rom....always do this before making changes. and click ok, then ok. Let rom manager do its thing. Now you have s-off root at the radio level.
9-Once phone is rebooted go to this site http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=752832 and download the 1st post file, its a pc36img.zip. We will put this on the root of our sd card.
10-once we have it on the root of the sdcard, we go to rom manager, select flash rom from sdcard, chose pc36img.zip and backup rom and click ok, then ok. Wait for it to backup, flash and finish.
******(now when it boots back up you might get stuck on the hboot screen, thats ok, pull the battery and then replace the battery, hold volume down button and power at same time, hold until clockwork recovery comes up, go to nandroid, and restore your previous backup you made.)
11-ALL DONE, YOU HAVE ROOT, NAND UNLOCKED, ENG HBOOT FOR FASTBOOT COMMANDS!!!! ENJOY!!!
ANYONE HAVING TROUBLE GETTING INTO RECOVERY---- WHEN IN ROM MANAGER SCROLL TOWARD BOTTOM AND FLASH ALTERNATIVE RECOVERY AND USE RA...THANKS TGRUENDLER FOR TESTING THAT OUT!

*****RESERVED******

My HBOOT still says 0.93.0000 is this correct ?
EDIT: ok now I got it, HBOOT is 0.76.2000 and yes I'm stuck on HBOOT screen but this is a new phone that never even had service so no nand back up. Now what?

Should have backed up, take out sd card, put in computer put rom on it, put back in phone, hold vol down and power boot to recovery and flash rom

Noob question:
I have a totally stock, non-rooted phone. All I am looking to do it get Root so I can use the wifi-tether app but keep everything that I have the same. If I get to step 5 above, from what I am reading, I will have everything that I have now plus root? Then after that I am guessing I would need the superuser app and the wifi-tether app and I would be golden? I am not looking to flash ROMS or backups and such. Just wifi-tether.

Go to step 6...and download superuser and wifi tether from market and your all set...

-Boot phone up, download rom manager from market, install and open the app, at top it wil say flash recovery, do so and chose evo 4g and flash.
So I need to do the above? Does this just flash a new recovery?

Yes, you should always have a backup of your rom and nand......when you flash rom manager....you should make a nandroid backup of your stock rooted rom...

Cool...thanks alot for this!
Edit:
Finished rooting and everything went great following these instructions. I am backing up my Stock Rooted ROM right now. Cannot wait for wifi-tether. Cannot believe I did not do this sooner

No problem!

OK, having one issue. Everything works great except I cannot boot into Recovery. I have ROM Manager installed and under Recovery it states: Current Recover: ClockWorkMod 2.5.0.1
When I try to do any backup or reboot into recovery, I get the white HTC EVO 4G splashscreen and it just sits there. I let it sit there for well over 20 minutes. I pulled the battery and it restarts just fine. If I hold down the Power/vol down button from the off state, I get the screen that says:
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.97.0000
ECT....
When I select Recovery, I just get the splash screen again and it just sits there.
Any thoughts?

what steps did you follow, all of them, or did you stop somwhere...you said you were backing up your rom..how did you do that..

I went all the way through step 6. Was trying to do a backup from Rom Manager.

download superuser from market, install, then reinstall rom manager. INstall and flash recovery..then in rom manager go to bottom and select repair permissions...reboot and try, if that doesn't work then in rom manager scroll to bottom and select flash alternative recovery and select amon or RA same thing..and try again..let me know..

people that have problems with recovery usually didn't uninstall device/driver before installing new modified usb drivers from unrevoked..see step 4 in guide......try doing this and rerunning unrevoked..

Amon-RA works flawlessly but Clock-work does not. I will try a couple of different versions of clockwork to see if I can get one to work. Thanks for the info.

How to install Nandroid on Captivate

Can someone direct me to a "how to" install nandroid for the captivate... I downloaded it, but it was on a thread for the G1, so I'm not sure if the procedure is the same for the captivate.
Thanks!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You need to get clockworkmanager, nandroid is the name for backing up your phone and being able to install that backup. Make sure you check the dev section and read up on the thread for clockworkmanager. You will need to be rooted with busybox and superuser access.
Easyist way is find the one click root on here then root your phone. Then get rom manager off the market and then install it and that will allow you to install clockwork then use rom manager to reboot into recovery then select backup and off you go.
I can tell you its a blessing to have that. Was messing around with trying to get froyo rom on and I had major issues so I just said screw it and restored to jh2 then rooted rom manager then clockwork then nandroid backup was back to my stuff in 10 mins.
Oh and its way worth buying rom manager for the little they charge. Its a great program
Cool, thanks for spelling this out for me... From what I have read before I try anything I need to do a nandroid back up incase something goes wrong so this helps a lot.
Thanks again!

Glad to finally understand what a freakin nandroid is lol...I have been doing it without knowing that was it!
I'm confused...
My captivate is rooted, and I installed ROM manager, but when I get into recovery, there is no option for backup. Any ideas?

reboot into recovery and select reinstall packages
if it reboots back to the recovery screen again, select reinstall packages again. this time you should be in the green clockwork mod screen. select nandroid from the menu and then select backup

Any way to do a nandroid backup from the clockwork mod on JI6 (froyo) since the recovery screen won't install the unsigned update.zip that ROM manager uses to enable clockwork mod recovery?

You need to do this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804226 just use the version of Odin that you used to install Froyo. This will enable 2e Recovery needed to run ClockworkMod Recovery.
Thanks for that thread, are there any cons to using that kernel? (reading the thread now)

Yup, it was just as simple as you said, thanks! Just made a nandroid backup. And clockwork mod's recovery is great
Im sorry if this is a dumb question...Im brand new to Android. What is Nandroid Backup?
I rooted and did the clockwork/rom manager download and then did this:
How to Install ClockWork Recovery:
1. On the menu there should be an option labeled “FLASH CLOCKWORK RECOVERY.”
Press it.
2. Once a popup says that it has been succesful press “BACKUP CURRENT ROM”
3. Your phone will now restart and backup your ROM
4. If your phone does not start backing up and instead boots into a blue menu use the volume
keys to select reboot now and then press the power button. Try to do all the steps again.
5. Wait for it to finish and then it should restart.
Is this different from a Nandroid backup?
Clockwork, nandroid, both refer to rom manager utilities. Clockwork is the recovery function and nandroid the backup utility.
But you need to select reinstall packages at screen with blue text. Clockwork/nandroid will have green text menu.
Swyped.....you may have to interpret
But im doing both the Clockwork/Nandroid with the Rom manager app correct? I did the reinstall packages and then it showed code scrolling and a status bar that took a minute or two... Is that what you mean? Did I do it right?
Yep....that is a nandroid backup
Swyped.....you may have to interpret
a issue no one else seems to have
Hey,
I just rooted my phone a few days ago so i could install the lag fix on my captivate. Got it done and it runs great now. I started looking around at these custom ROMs and i'm interested in trying one out, but not with out backing up my stock/rooted rom first in case i screw something up. Here is the prob that i'm having.
I installed Clockwork Rom manager NP. Got Busy box installed already too. I opened up rom manager and hit back/recover and it asked me my phone type. I told it the captivate. It downloaded recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip into a recoveries directory. Next i clicked on the fix permissions and let it do its thing. Now i clicked on backup current ROM clicked ok for the default name. Phone reboots into recover mode and pops up with.
update media, finished
--install from package....
Finding update package...
opening update package...
E:can't open /cache/update.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
I hit reinstall packages and it gives me the same error.
The only thing that i have try was renaming the recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip to update.zip and dropping it in the main directory but it had the same effect.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Get and update.
I re-dropped the recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip as update.zip in the main dir. and hit backup current mod.
I clicked reinstall packages and it went into the manual mode, hit reinstall pages again and it has seemed to work.
I will give and update if it does not. Thanks again.
Guys,
One thing I am not sure of. I got a brand new Captivate with Stock JF6. I have another one running Froyo.
If I take backup of current new phone via CWM (nandroid) and restore it on the other one.
Is there any trouble expected ???
One I know that files in /efs may get screwed up as it has IMEI related entries too ... but I am not sure.
I am listening.

Since your already rooted, the easiest way to put a recovery on the phone is with clockwork mod.
Go to the market, search for clockworkmod, scroll all the way down and download "Rom Manager"-Free version.
After install, open the Rom Manager app, and the first option will be to flash clockworkmod recovery. It will do everything for you to flash recovery.
Once flashed, simply shut the phone down, and when you turn the phone on, press and hold the home button till you get to recovery. To do a nandroid backup, scroll down to nandroid, and select backup. Done.
to flash a rom afterward, place the rom's zip file on your sdcard, reboot to recovery, select to clear system/user settings, scroll down to yes, then back in the main page of recovery, go to flash zip file, select zip, and then select the zip file from the list. After that is done, select reboot to boot into the new rom.
DONE!
thank you that was exactly what i needed

Rom Upgrade Help Required

Hello All,
I need your help regarding upgrade my captivate which is running on 2.1. I had hard bricked it once before when I was trying to update it via odin. Just got fixed it back from mobiletechvideos.com. Now I want to upgrade it to gingerbread Can anyone tell me any stable rom which I can upgrade safely and have 0% chance to hard bricked it again. Or any rom which I can flash via any other tool not via odin as I thought last bricked was caused due to odin. Pls help me.
I like the MIUI rom but I saw that it use ODIN so I am a bit afread to try it
Thanks
My understanding of the process.
I'm fairly sure you need to use superoneclick to root, that's step one. Next go to market and dowload ROM manager and install it, that's step two.Step three, flash clockworkmod recovery with ROM manager. Choose captivateMTD and let it flash. Step four, now go to the download ROM and choose an MTD ROM. I reccomend cyanogenmod as its aosp, overclocked and generally awesome. They have a stable build that's a great dd. Step five is to flash it. When the download completes it will promt you to wipe data and cache, clear everything and hit go. Step six would be to dl and flash gapps with ROM manager. Wipe cache and install. After all this you should be on cm7 stable. Pm me if you need help. I have the drivers and all files you could possibly need in my dropbox account.
Good luck and enjoy cyanogenmod.

I tried to download superoneclick via this link:

All archive showing me damaged only 8 mb version is working but when I tried to root it via that version it shows me FAILED msg at the end. Any help in this regard ?
You do not need to root your phone to install a custom rom.
If you currently are on 2.1, boot into recovery and flash this zip file.
From here you can go about installing a gingerbread kernel and rom.
If you are unsure of the process, please do lots more research before you go flashing anything. If you brick again it's not my fault.

I had selected last 2 options and clicked ok then it asked me to press ok to reboot into clockworkMod Recovery and continue the installation when I clicked ok and rebooted where it showing me 4 options: rebbot system now, reinstall packages, delete all user data and delete cache data. After that I don't know what to do BTW I downloaded MIUI rom as I wana try it )
Any Help ?
Its sounds like you are in the stock recovery still. When you get to the screen with four options click reinstall packages and it should take you to clockwork recovery. The you will have many more options. You will want to go to install zip from SD card then choose zip from SD card and then navigate to your rom of choice and click it. Then it will go through the install process and when it is done hit reboot now and you should be running your custom rom.

[Q] S-Off then T-Mobile ICS OTA / Undo?

Hi Everyone,
Just doing a sanity check. I have just made my stock GB sensation 4g (t-mobile) S-OFF using revolutionary and choose not to install a recovery. My phone is working fine after reboot.
My next plan is T-mobile ICS update.
Questions
1) If I download the update OTA will I be able to undo later and choose a custom rom? if yes how?
2) Same as Q1 but what if i FIRST install "4EXT Recovery Control" before the OTA?
3) If instead (of 1 and 2) install "4EXT Recovery Control" and then install the rooted ZIP of the t-mobile update what radio and RLL do I need to install and where do I get those?
4) If I proceed with 3 and then choose to flash a "pure" ICS custom ROM what are people thinking of the new ICS Tmobile wifi-calling app APK install on these more custom roms ? - i.e. how stable is it?
Many thanks !
Aside: I ask not only for myself but also for x3 other people with (stock GB) Sensation 4G's that I will help out with.
For others, here were my steps so far for S-OFF:
1. Download v1.1 tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497404 and run.
2. Install HTC drivers.
3. Remove battery from phone. Put battery back in. hold down power+ VOL DOWN – wait until boot screen.
note down HBOOT version number. Then reboot phone
4. Use tool to start “revolutionary s-off method”, make a note of the serial number in the key prompt.
5. Connect phone and select htc sync mode
6. Go to: http://revolutionary.io/ and chose windows download so you can unlock a beta key.
7. Enter the serial number from the console and copy your beta key (CASE SENSITIVE)
8. Paste beta key into console and hit enter
9. Choose NO to clock work recovery
10. Reboot phone

Yes, by flashing a custom recovery with a PG58IMG.zip and then flashing the rom with recovery. This will work with ICS roms, but if you want to go back to GB then there's a little more involved.
2) Same as Q1 but what if i FIRST install "4EXT Recovery Control" before the OTA?
The OTA will fail if you do not have stock recovery.
3) If instead (of 1 and 2) install "4EXT Recovery Control" and then install the rooted ZIP of the t-mobile update what radio and RLL do I need to install and where do I get those?
This is the stock firmware for TMOUS ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1656413
4) If I proceed with 3 and then choose to flash a "pure" ICS custom ROM what are people thinking of the new ICS Tmobile wifi-calling app APK install on these more custom roms ? - i.e. how stable is it?
It's not reported to work well with AOSP roms.

I have a follow up (noob) question:
Status:
Stock GB with S-OFF (see above)
I have purchased and installed Ext4 control.
I have purchased and installed titanium backup pro.
I have installed busybox app.
4) All of the above require root before I can use them. All of the guides for root I have seen instruct me to install Clockwork Mod. If I do that (install CWM, get root, set CID to 111111 etc.) will I then have issues using EXT4 control? anything to be aware of?
5) Suggestions for how to proceed to get the rooted t-mobile ICS on and matching radio?
Thank you.
Aside: I now helped get one more sensation to S-OFF (2 of 4) , 2 more to go.

8) remove battery, re-install, hold down power+ vol DOWN until boot menu.
9) selected recovery, select choose zip form sd card. scroll down and find "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip". apply that update.
Aside: I tired twice and both times the install ended with an error 0. However on reboot I do have superuser (SU) shortcut in apps draw and it does work.
10) Reboot
11) Look for superuser app on phone. load it.
12) Run busybox app (installed previousl) and install busy box.
13)Run titanium back up pro and start backing up EVERYTHING.
Next is Super CID .....
Sorry I didn't get back to you right away. It looks like you got it all figured out though.
Flash 4ext recovery from the app you downloaded for 4ext. Be sure to make a backup of your stock Rom once you flash 4ext

[Q] Please help no OS on phone.

I don't know all of the technical language here so I'll just say this as simply as I can.
Wanted to go from stock ICS to a JB rom.
I unlocked the bootloader using the X-Factor 2.20 method.
Then using the All-in-one toolkit I installed the included recovery.
Next I stupidly did not make a recovery file on the phone and tried to flash the boot.img file from a JB rom in the kernel section of the All-in-one tool.
So instead of having a working rom I just have a splash screen and can either boot into the bootloader or go into recovery.
Also when I reboot from recovery it tells me there is no OS installed on the phone.
Now reading through a lot of these roms it seems that the proper way to install is to first backup, then to put the file onto the phone's memory and install through the recovery. Where I am right now I cannot find a way to get any files onto the phone so that I could try that.
Where do I go from here?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Boot into recovery by holding power+vol down
Mount usb in twrp
On your computer, go to "my computer" right click on removable storage
Choose format.. This will take some time, so in the meantime download cleanrom 5.1 from your computer
When format is finished, transfer cleanrom onto your phone.
Unmount sdcard in twrp. Now choose install, install cleanrom zip. (It will flash boot.img for you.)
Now you have a stable ROM to work with. Report back when your stable again

I will definitely try that. One thing that I also want to bring up is that the phone goes from the normal HTC white splash screen to one with the HTC logo and red letters "this phone is for developmental purposes only..." does that matter or will it go away with the install of cleanrom?
Edit: Answered my own question. Thank you!
Nope... That what happens when you unlock boot loader. It will never go away till we achieve s-off
