Has Anything like this happened to anyone else?? - Thunderbolt General

I will try to be as brief as possible.... when the thnderbolt came out i was not available for an upgrade so i added another line to my account so i could get the tb for 250. Fast forward to today and i check my bill and my balance is $2,800. My immediate suspicion was tethering my thunderbolt with pdanet but to my suprise when i called verizon they said all charges had been made to my old line and not the line with the thunderbolt. He precided to tell me that my other phone which by the way dosent even have a battery in it made all the data charges. My question is how is this possible i thought maybe someone cloned my esn but honestly that seems like a long shot any one have anything like this happen to them before?

Just to be clear, you added a new line to your account and purchased a Thunderbolt with a different phone number? Did they activate a data plan with that line as well?(Should have, but you never know) I've had cases before where my cell phone company messed up adding a second line(In my case, it wasn't correctly linked to the primary plan and they tried to charge on a per minute basis for the secondary line), so it is entirely possible the same thing happened to you. How does the line show up when you log into your account on the Verizon website, and what features are enabled under it?

You can't get a smartphone from verizon without a data plan. It won't activate at all. Your thunderbolt was and is activated on the 30 dollar unlimited Internet plan. The other line however, your original line, is it a smartphone or just regular feature phone. I've had times were verizon charged me for data but took it back after reviewing my plan. I've always carried unlimited data. And if you have too then you can argue that the verizon rep changed it.

Yes i added another number to my family share plan and threw the other phone with my original line into a dresser. Its a lg venus like i said turned off no battery in it yet verzion says its still using data which to me seems impossible. I have also triple checked that everything is deactivated on my original line and confirmed unlimited on my tb.

I purchased the Bolt by adding a line just like you did (i did that with a Dinc and DX). I noticed a 1600.00 data charge on my first statement post Bolt purchase. The charge was on one of the lines I don't use....the line used to get the discount. I called Verizon and had the charge credited back within 15 min. The explanation was that while the phone was trying to connect and activate, the line was accruing data charges. The problem was that somehow the line that accrued the charges was not the line that had my unlimited plan attached. I purchased the phone the morning of release and it took 5 hours to activate.

Yes that is exactly the same as my problem.. do you tether and has this happened again sincr the first time?

I haven't seen any (crazy) additional charges on my account yet. Yes, I tether several times a week...mobile hotspot app. I do not watch movies while tethering, just plain jane browsing.

call up tell them there must be some mistake, and when the person you talk to sounds clueless and says they will be right back and then tells you that you have to pay, say you would like to speak to their manager or supervisor about the issue, and if they say they just asked their supervisor, just calmly state that you'd like to speak to the supervisor. once you do, simply explain that there is simply no way you could have such a high bill. don't say anything about pda net or tethering, just tell them you put the one phone away and haven't touched it and (very important) the person at the store and someone you spoke to on the phone before said your only charge for data would be 29.99 because it was unlimited and you could use as much as you want. they may have to call you back after getting approval to waive such a large amount, but they should waive it. if not, keep calling back and speak to someone else, go into a store and speak to a manager, etc.

i tethered my feature flip phone on verizon like 5+ years ago when you had to dial some * number and i didn't realize it was free data yet i was being charged daytime minutes (oops, bill for extra minutes for $1000+). i called up and the scenario i outlined above happened and they just charged one month of unlimited minutes so it was only like $100 instead of $1000. i believe at the time i almost cried on the phone with the manager woman, saying *sniff* iii don't knowww howw immm gonna payyy thissss (shaky pre-crying voice) *sniff*

Luckily they refunded the entire amount i just wanted to know this wouldnt happen again and was not due to my tethering

[WARNING] Users who had Unlimited Data

Please please please login to your myWireless account on AT&T and make sure that you still have the unlimited data plan.
My salesman on Sunday said he was able to keep it on my account, however today I got a text that said my "data pay per use" has exceeded $20. I logged into my account, and my unlimited data was gone! I called 611, spoke with customer care.
At first, customer care was understanding, but took the line that said "any time you make changes to your account, you will lose the unlimited data option". It wasn't until I told her that the salesman said I could keep it, and I specifically asked her to open a case, that she took action. Once I mentioned "open a case" to get unlimited data restored, she changed her tune. In my opinion, I think they do that because most people won't press the issue. Since I stood firm, she accessed my account and verified I had unlimited data on my last bill, and submitted a case to get it returned to my account.
Now I'm waiting for the case to be resolved.
Check for yourself, make sure you still have it.
They tried to tell me me they had to takevmy unlimited data away when I bought the inspire. I wad told before when I got the captivate if I never got rid of it I would be grandfathers and keep it.
I've been with ATT for 8-9 years, and told them if they were taking unlimited data, cancel my service right now.
So they fixed it, alls good now, haven't actually checked the bill though

If you don't call 611, push the issue of getting "a case" opened to get that restored to your line. Customer Care told me that they are no longer allowed to escalate a case to restore unlimited data UNLESS it is on the previous bill.
Just checked my account and I'm still on unlimited data. Thanks for the heads up however.

I had the same problem doing my upgrade over the phone. I just asked to speak to a supervisor and told her to add the SOC code for the unlimited 4G plan since it already exists in their system. She gave me some fluff about it probably not working, but that she'd try. It worked just fine and my account still showed unlimited data. Long story short, get a supervisor and tell them to add the unlimited 4g SOC code.

People who work for ATT - I lost my unlimited data and have since "had a case open with the department that reviews the issue and is capable of putting it back on" - this according to the supervisor I spoke with after I found out I had lost it. I was told I'd hear back from someone by 2/25. He also hinted towards the fact that since a case was open it was very unlikely that they wouldn't put it back. You guys know about this process? What are the chances I'm going to get mine back?
Upgraded from a Nexus One at a Costco booth without a hitch. Still have my unlimited data plan.
My data wouldn't work at all when I got home with this phone on Sunday. Somehow my unlimited plan disappeared, and my case is slated to be resolved by 2/25. WHAT?
Totally ridiculous. They assure me any overage charges would be refunded, but I can't say that I trust them. No idea why it takes 11 days to fix something they screwed up on their own.
I guess it is all about having CS or a rep involved. I went online on launch day and ordered mine straight out for 399. I had, and still have the unlimited data plan for 30 a month. So no problems here. I just swapped in my old SIM card, set up the APN and was good to go.
Oh, btw, Speedtest.net on various servers, above 5MBIT down and a little over 1MBIT up. So I guess this HSPDA is working pretty well for me.

Your chances are very good, if you had the unlimited plan on account and it was removed by mistake then you should have no problem getting it put back on. I also work for AT&T.
Still have my unlimited data plan called "GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - HSDPPB" (Upgraded FROM "GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - DPPB")
I was also told I have to wait till the 25th to hear about the case that was opened. However I was assured I would get the unlimited back due to I did not give permission to have it removed...uhhh duh? lol
Still have my smart phone personal unlimited.... getting about 5 down and 1.5 up. Can't wait for them to complete that backhaul work here in STL. 5 megs up here i come.
Not surprised that at&greed would try and steal away someone's unlimited.
Don't blame ignorance, I think its on purpose unfortunately.

Im confident I will get it back, but if I dont they lose me as a customer.
t-mobile offers unlimited data throttled after 5gb, I generaly use around 4gb,plus they let you tether without extra bs charge.Im tempted to open a t-mobile acct regardless to see if I like them better.
att dropped the ball big time here, I too think that is is an effort to force people to tiered data.
att fail
i just checked my bill and nothing looks different. im going to call and make sure though tomorrow. been with att for 4+ years. would hate to go to metro pcs and get the same features for 50 bucks..
btw this phone is amazing.. cant wait til root

The only way to get something like this to work is to use a device from another carrier not already on at&t. Even then they may still nail you depending on what apn you are using.

Ha Ha yes it happened to me and it didn't even take a full 24hrs
3pm had $10 unlimited and by 6am the next morning, I was switched back to a gay tiered plan.
Anybody who wants to try this, just save yourself some time and use the iPhone 2G trick. Worked for me.
you can get it to "stick" if you have an older grandfathered plan. If you have a new plan, you can make them change it back by just calling them, and they will switch it back to the medianet plan, as long as you have a different IMEI that is NOT a smartphone. They will also back date it to the date their system changed to the more expensive plan. BUT, you will have to keep doing this over and over again. I actually had them "fix" my account so it never changes, and it doesnt matter what phone I use. You will have to get to the technical department, and have them do it. Their plans are based on bytes, not speed. So they cannot charge you for the same amount of bytes, only based on your device. If they had different speeds, ala internet service for your home, then it wouldnt be an issue. But since their data plans are only based on bytes, the fact that they have a "unlimited" plan only makes sense for everyone to utilize it, and it matters not what device you use, because a byte is a byte is a byte. They dont provide different upload and download speeds in their data rate plans. I have been with the company since it was originally PacBell, so I have been able to get them to do certain things that arent normally done for customers.
i know what you're talking about with making it stick. you can either use a smartphone NOT from ATT, or call in and give them an IMEI for ANY phone not from ATT (ie unlocked unbranded nokia) or any other phone you have lying around (ie tmobile). They will then lock this into their system as the IMEI for your data plan and you won't be switched over. I used this trick for 2 years with no issues, switching back and forth between my e72 and my tilt2 every day or two (i know, im odd). i watched my data consumption and always stayed under 2 gb because i heard of people getting caught this way, but i'm pretty certain that if you have tech support 'lock in' your IMEI of a dumb phone/non-att phone, you're SET.
unfortunately, i had to upgrade to the 2gb data plan when i purchased my inspire (they wouldn't give me the subsidized rate unless i did this) and my dad got pissed at me for being a cheat too lol

Free hotspot for another month

Well I didn't see this posted anywhere else but I just got a text message from Verizon saying I get another month of hotbot free. Here is a copy of the text.

this could be a case of moron-employee, but a rep I talked to today at a store in Thousand Oaks (Cali.) told me they had no plans to charge for wi-fi hotspot use provided you already had unlimited data.
I suspect it will be free until they have tiered data pricing in place. Because it's free, you can't sign up for it. After tiered data is in place, when you sign up, you're not grandfathered, so that means a contract change along with tiered pricing.
Net/net, there will be no way to grandfather unlimited data along with tethering on the TB.

I got the message too about charging after a certain date. I seriously doubt Verizon is going to let any money slip through their fingers by grandfathering anyone in. Which is fine with me, I like Wireless Tether better!!!
This may sound a bit on the paranoid side. But, did any one ever think that maybe VZW was letting us have free hot spot feature to see how much DATA we would actually incure on our individual lines? Verizon has a way of finding out how much DATA is being passed through there tather app. That will give them an idea of who is using the after market teather app when there hotspot feature goes to a teared price plann. They know that some will go back to the teather app. And they will be able to make a pretty good educated guess as to whoo is using what. And please, don't tell me that they wouldn't do that. This is a corporation that is out to make money. And we have all the technology that is needed to acquire any info that is desired. And there is nothing wrong with that. But, they think it is OK to charge us for data passing through our phones to any other device other than the phone. When truly, we can download anything we want to the phone and then pass it to a device of our choice either through WiFi or USB. They are merely trying to charge us for convenience. I don't ever use more DATA when teathered to an external device than I could or do when I am on my phone. This charging for DATA tunneling is ridiculous. And has to stop. These a$$ hat clowns have to stop charging for anything they like. What hell! There prices are above and beyond ok. 5 gigs for $50 and so on? Yeah, that's totally reasonable!
One other thing. I don't particularly want to hear some snub nosed douch tell me if I don't like the prices that I can go somewhere else for a cell provider. Yeah, that would be great if 1, VZW didn't purchase Alltel. Or 2, ATT didn't purchase T Mobile. Not that I would move to a GSM carrier. And I kind of need the coverage that aCDMA company can provide. Yes, I know the saying, you pay higher prices for better service. And don't get me wrong. I am grateful to have these technologies available to us. But, the prices have to come down a bit. Any way, I am done *****ing an wearing my tin foil hat. Good evening every one.

That's not a solution either. While I completely agree with the poster your replying to, I'm not sure there is much we as consumers can do about it. Those of us who actually care and realize what is happening are in the minority. The rest of the consumers who simply use their phones to broadcast their location to everyone on facebook and twitter or check their e-mail will never know that they are being ripped off.
Well unfortunately if Verizon does put me on tiered pricing for data I actually would change carriers. The main reason I came to Verizon was for their service. I don't tether that often, but I like to have the option without having to worry about extra fees but I use the data on my phone A LOT. I honestly doubt they will, but if Verizon does force everyone onto tiered pricing, well, at that point I might as well be with Cricket because all I'll be using is the phone.
I would like to be honest, so given a reasonable price I would buy the tether service, but still use my wired tether app because they wont support wired teather themselves....
The CSR did however tell me that supposedly you will only be charged for what the tether app itself uses and that regular phone data would not count...
Sent from my AdasR6400L from the matrix->
I would be willing to pay $60/mo for unlimited access on top of my current plan. That would match my current ISP. Anything more and I'll just get a VPN service and tether using VPN to prevent them from seeing what traffic is from my phone and what is from another device.
meh, I went ahead and put wifi tether on my tbolt
1 two hour hd movie uses 3 gb of data. I dare Verizon to put a 5gb cap considering a lot of kids use their phone for YouTube viewing which if I remember correctly has hd viewing.
Just as a side note I was on at&T's website the other day (don't ask) and used their usage calculator. They basically told me none of their plans were big enough for what I do on my phone alone let alone tethering with other devices. LOL.

I had a question regarding the hotspot. I verizon rep told me that we have the hotspot free until 6/15 and after that it will be $20/month for 1G. If you go over its and additional $20 for every following GB. My question is does anyone know how the free hotspot works. Do we only get 1G free and if we go over we will be charged or is it unlimted until the pricing starts and then it has the cap?

Inaccuracies when being billed t-mobile/wind/moblicity

Has anyone else experience inaccuracies being billed on their monthly cycle? "99% sure yes".
recently i have been seeing random away data zone charges which accumulate a few $. the initial month i purchased a data plan as well and was still being charged for data despite i had the plan "got that reimbursed". Aside from that i was not charged for the second away roaming sms that i sent... but of course the system managed to find fake away charges to tag on despite the phone has never had national roaming on and the data has been disabled for the last 2 weeks and using wifi only...
obv the phone is a g2x/p999 of which the android os could be at fault for some odd reason but i would assume something like that would be noticed a lot sooner given it would affect every customer.
Do you live near a Canadian or Mexican border? Back in Detroit if I stood on the Detroit river sometimes my phone would pick up Windsor's network.
Otherwise I would try turning off roaming in the phone settings.

phones configured to not use data while roaming, infact the standard data was disabled for 2 weeks... of which in that period they claim i used about .5 mb for 2$. One of the reps claimed its related to using wifi... said they disabled something so that data would not work while roaming. national data roaming or something, the previous rep before the phone cut off "probably some moron hanging up on the customer" said that they could disable something but it would disable the use of phone peroid while roaming. either way ill wait a month to see if it re-occurs.
i mean they dont bill be for the txt i sent... "i do get on the home network barely sometimes maybe thats why"
but they bill be for stuff i never used... not sure how they measure/bill for roaming but it seems awful if wifi is causing it to accumulate somehow. probably some form of prevention when tethering through the phone? idk
whatever the second rep did, did not disable the phone 100% while roaming since just called out/myself and it worked fine so hopefully its a simple fix. i assume they will never change anything since majority are too lazy to care/notice a minor 2$ on their bill for roaming or have the brains to argue the fact they have the phone properly setup and that the system is in fact wrong.

How to get unlimited data.

Alright guys, there is still a plan code for unlimited hotspot for our 4G phones that WILL also change your plan to unlimited data. Keep in mind some reps will NOT know this and some might have to search up the feature code. BARE WITH THEM AND DONT BE **** HEADS BECAUSE THEY WILL LOG THE ACCOUNT WITH NOTES AND YOU WILL BE OUT OF LUCK. If the rep tells you they cant do anything or cant find anything simply be polite, hang up then call back.
After you find someone who has added this plan then go to your my Verizon and remove the unlimited hotspot feature. You will be left behind with unlimited data for $30.
This is all based on the rep you speak too, it works for some and it doesnt work for others. Just be patient.

Took a little for the app to update but it worked still says unlimited and the hotspot is indeed off. Wow lol good ****
Thanks so much! I have to have hotspot and don't want to worry about being throttled. I was paying $50 for the 6gb with hotspot. Called in and asked for the "4g hotspot" plan like the post said. I also saw it under features on account management but it didn't actually say "unlimited". The rep didn't seem to know about it. Once he found it he said it was a November promotion but since it was only December 2nd he'd see if he could get it done for me. Sure enough. Came back and said he got it approved. Now have unlimited data on phone and hotspot for 1 cent less a month. Thanks! I guess I could always remove the hotspot and retain the data plan but I'm fine for now. Interestingly enough. My old data with hotspot was all within the data section. Now I just see unlimited data for $30 in the data section. Then the 4G hotspot feature is found in the "features" section. So I don't see the problem in dropping the hotspot plan and keeping the unlimited data whenever I want. They aren't tied together like my old data plan was.

Thanks OP for linking back to the instructions. Thanks to others for guidance also. I just called and it worked no problem on first call. I joined Verizon exactly 1 month ago so no chance of grandfathering for me.
My exact steps(about a 5-10 minute process):
1- *611
2- option 4
3- spoke "add a feature"
4- enter password
5- spoke to an outgoing customer service lady
6- told her, exact words: "I want add the unlimited 4G hotspot feature to my plan"
7- 1 min later it was done. She told me I would now have unlimited data vs. the 4 gigs I had.
8- hung up, refreshed "My Verizon Data" widget and it was unlimited!!
9- logged into My Verizon, change features under plan, removed 4g hotspot($30.00 add-on)
10- unlimited data for $29.99 remains on my plan
11- SUCCESS!!!
5 tries...success. Watchout cause they accidentally put "global 4G data 50mb" for 30.00 per month...had to call to get removed but only took a second. Let's hope they don't go back and change it

This just worked for me on the second try with my wife's phone. Not only did it work, but she didn't even put the hotspot on the phone, just made it unlimited data

It works!!!
Just upgraded 2 phones on our family plan. Actually went right to unlimited data, without the hotspot thing, from our existing 4 GB double data plan. Took several tries, but once you hit the right rep. they do it in like 2 minutes.
Nevermind the last part of my last part. The 4g hotspot wasn't showing up on the my Verizon app, but when I logged into the site it was there so I have to take it off. Also when I did this I found out that apparently I'm over paying on my family plan shared minutes by $20

Glad it worked guys!
As soon as my charge is fixed I'm doing this. yusssssss
Worked for me this morning on my first call, however he did put me on hold for 10 minutes. I did not have to cancel the hotspot online because it automatically cancelled my previous data pack and says "unlimited data / email access". Widget does indicate unlimited! Does anybody else know if I leave it like that will it charge me twice for data? I tried to find my regular 2gb data pack but it wasn't there anymore. And when I went to "change features" it said the my data pack ( that I just added) was not available anymore and if I deleted or changed it I would not get it back..... interesting!! Thanks ForeverSupra I'm Stoked!!

Why not try it now? You don't have to have a working phone for them to change your plan.

My droid x is still on my plan because the charge couldn't activate due to no MEID.
