[WARNING] Users who had Unlimited Data - HTC Inspire 4G

Please please please login to your myWireless account on AT&T and make sure that you still have the unlimited data plan.
My salesman on Sunday said he was able to keep it on my account, however today I got a text that said my "data pay per use" has exceeded $20. I logged into my account, and my unlimited data was gone! I called 611, spoke with customer care.
At first, customer care was understanding, but took the line that said "any time you make changes to your account, you will lose the unlimited data option". It wasn't until I told her that the salesman said I could keep it, and I specifically asked her to open a case, that she took action. Once I mentioned "open a case" to get unlimited data restored, she changed her tune. In my opinion, I think they do that because most people won't press the issue. Since I stood firm, she accessed my account and verified I had unlimited data on my last bill, and submitted a case to get it returned to my account.
Now I'm waiting for the case to be resolved.
Check for yourself, make sure you still have it.

They tried to tell me me they had to takevmy unlimited data away when I bought the inspire. I wad told before when I got the captivate if I never got rid of it I would be grandfathers and keep it.
I've been with ATT for 8-9 years, and told them if they were taking unlimited data, cancel my service right now.
So they fixed it, alls good now, haven't actually checked the bill though

My salesman told me I had it still too. It wasn't until I got that text about data-pay-per-use that I logged in and checked. You really should login and make sure you still have it.
If you don't call 611, push the issue of getting "a case" opened to get that restored to your line. Customer Care told me that they are no longer allowed to escalate a case to restore unlimited data UNLESS it is on the previous bill.

Just checked my account and I'm still on unlimited data. Thanks for the heads up however.

I had the same problem doing my upgrade over the phone. I just asked to speak to a supervisor and told her to add the SOC code for the unlimited 4G plan since it already exists in their system. She gave me some fluff about it probably not working, but that she'd try. It worked just fine and my account still showed unlimited data. Long story short, get a supervisor and tell them to add the unlimited 4g SOC code.

I work for at&t, there is no issue what so ever with keeping the unlimited data. If you stay with a smartphone, you can keep your unlimited smartphone data if you already have it. if anyone tells you different, they are wrong!

I work for att too. as long as you had the unlimited data then you can keep it.

Where on the site do you check to see your data plan? Nevermind, found it.

People who work for ATT - I lost my unlimited data and have since "had a case open with the department that reviews the issue and is capable of putting it back on" - this according to the supervisor I spoke with after I found out I had lost it. I was told I'd hear back from someone by 2/25. He also hinted towards the fact that since a case was open it was very unlikely that they wouldn't put it back. You guys know about this process? What are the chances I'm going to get mine back?

Upgraded from a Nexus One at a Costco booth without a hitch. Still have my unlimited data plan.

My data wouldn't work at all when I got home with this phone on Sunday. Somehow my unlimited plan disappeared, and my case is slated to be resolved by 2/25. WHAT?
Totally ridiculous. They assure me any overage charges would be refunded, but I can't say that I trust them. No idea why it takes 11 days to fix something they screwed up on their own.

I guess it is all about having CS or a rep involved. I went online on launch day and ordered mine straight out for 399. I had, and still have the unlimited data plan for 30 a month. So no problems here. I just swapped in my old SIM card, set up the APN and was good to go.
Oh, btw, Speedtest.net on various servers, above 5MBIT down and a little over 1MBIT up. So I guess this HSPDA is working pretty well for me.

Your chances are very good, if you had the unlimited plan on account and it was removed by mistake then you should have no problem getting it put back on. I also work for AT&T.

Still have my unlimited data plan called "GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - HSDPPB" (Upgraded FROM "GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - DPPB")

I was also told I have to wait till the 25th to hear about the case that was opened. However I was assured I would get the unlimited back due to I did not give permission to have it removed...uhhh duh? lol

Still have my smart phone personal unlimited.... getting about 5 down and 1.5 up. Can't wait for them to complete that backhaul work here in STL. 5 megs up here i come.

Not surprised that at&greed would try and steal away someone's unlimited.
Don't blame ignorance, I think its on purpose unfortunately.

same for me my resolve date is the 23rd.
Im confident I will get it back, but if I dont they lose me as a customer.
t-mobile offers unlimited data throttled after 5gb, I generaly use around 4gb,plus they let you tether without extra bs charge.Im tempted to open a t-mobile acct regardless to see if I like them better.
att dropped the ball big time here, I too think that is is an effort to force people to tiered data.
att fail

i just checked my bill and nothing looks different. im going to call and make sure though tomorrow. been with att for 4+ years. would hate to go to metro pcs and get the same features for 50 bucks..
btw this phone is amazing.. cant wait til root

[Q] New ATT cust data

So my wife and I are coming from tmobile. There we had the 5 gig throttle but unlimited data. Verizon now offers unlimited as well. I'm still within my cancel period. Anyone hear of luck with getting ATT to give unlimited to a new cust if we threaten to return phones and cancel?
Sent from my Inspire '4g'.
Yeah good luck with that. AT&T customer service is atrocious at best, and the order of the day is to nickel and dime the customers more and more while taking away more services. This phone has kept me on the network for a little while longer but before inspire came around I was more than ready to jump ship. My prediction... They tell you, "See ya!"
From what I have heard and read, they can only give you the unlimited plan if you've had it before and it was accidentally removed during the phone upgrade. And even those people are having a hard time getting it. Their system can't even offer it to you if they wanted since you've never had it. Again, this is just what i've gathered from reading here
I don't know if that loophole is still open, but.. Buy a used iPhone 2G and insert your SIM. After a little while you'll receive an automated text that unlimited iPhone data plan has been added to your account. Voila! Now you're free to grandfather that plan to other devices.

Yup, that still works.
You knew what you were signing up for when you switched, so I don't know why you would try complaining to at&t.
The iphone 2g thing still works. I did it on a new line with a new sim with out issue. Not sure if it still works if you do it on a line that already had service. I had two lines with them fire years and opened a new one for the inspire.
Of course I knew it signing up... just thought I might be able to live with it...
Has to be a 2g iPhone? Just put my sim in and use it till i get that message and then switch back? Seems like a major oversight on ATT's part. Can I use a barrowed iPhone? What kind of timeframe we talking about.

[Q] Do i really need a data plan

Hey guys I just wanted to ask one question before I actually buy the desire hd. When i got my Tilt 2 one year ago, I told them I didnt want a data plan and they told me it was ok because i have been a customer for 5 years. So question is are they going to force me to get a data plan when i get the desire hd. thanks in advance.
you cannot get it without the data plan, this is ATT's policy now. that said, android OS works much differently, and not having a data plan would probably not work simply because of the way android OS works. you can try it though, curious to hear results...
from what i was told in the past, if you get a cool rep at the store, which i have come across in my area.
You can get them to cancel the data plan after the first month.

This is NOT the case anymore. If you get a smartphone on AT&T, you are required to get a dataplan. End Of Story.
If you don't want a data plan, the question you should ask yourself is (unless you have WiFi to connect to all the time) do you really need a smartphone?

Once that person makes their first phone call with their phone, the network registers their IMEI and puts them on the correct data plan.
Nice try though.
The ATT policy aside, because android uses data for so much, I doubt you could even set up the phone unless near WiFi. When out and about away from WiFi, so many parts of the OS reach out for data that it would be very different than what one might realize. It's not like the old windows mobile days where data can just be shut off. But this is why I'm curious to see the results though.
I called att support and they can block data on your line so you never get any data ever, you could turn off data plan that way

If you unlock it, what trick is there to fake the imei? I haven't heard of any yet on android and I looked thru the source code and all to try compiling a kernel to do so. Curious what method you know of!
2 things, you can't drop a data plan as far as i know with at&t, they are changing stuff every week right now however trying to get some sort of edge it seems.
I turned on an old tilt this past week for my kid and they no longer require a data plan it seems on older PDA's. It was a ridiculous rule. So i have data blocked on it and he uses the wifi. Finally one tiny issue solved.
More good news.. (remember you get a different answer with every rep)
I was able to turn on the 2gig plan for 25 instead of the normal $30 its been.
And i was told i can turn on a 4 gig plan now for 40 with 250mb roll overs @ 15$ per.
This is news to me ive only seen the 200mb and the 2 gb plan up till now. Tmobi is like 5 gb a month (unlimited) so its nice to see this (since i swear the 4g is eating up data on me)
I've heard from my aunt, who "worked" for att, that if you were grandfathered in, since the old days where you didn't need a Data plan for a Smartphone, you can still get one without a plan. (I remember my first WM Smartphone was bought this way)
You just have to be sure to specify this point, that you are Grandfathered in.
Since she knows this, Her Son, bought a BlackBerry for his daughter, and insisted on no Data plan, the Rep. allowed it because he was Grandfathered in.
I intend to Buy an Inspire, later this week, using my Mom's upgrade; she actually uses a Blackberry, without a Data Plan too! ;D
It should work the same, my dad says we should be Great-Grandfathered in, cause we were there when it was still Cingular and the First $10.00 Unlimited Data Plans came out.
As far as I know it doesn't work that way. You are already grandfathered in because they are allowing you to use a smart phone without data. But as soon as you get a new phone you will automatically be forced to upgrade to a data plan. My wife tried the same thing, she had a blackberry with no data but when she got a new phone they automatically gave her a data plan.

The 2GB data plan has always been $25. The unlimited data plan is $30.

LOOK HERE! How to get AT&T to bring back $30 data.

Hey guys! Just got off the phone with an AT&T rep, tried to talk him into getting me unlimited data for $30 per month. Obviously that didn't work so well, but he did share some valuable info with me...
Every time someone calls and asks for it, they file a report and send it make to the main department. The keep each report, and he says they've been getting so many recently, they're considering bringing back the plan for those who have called in and asked for it sometime in the next few months.
I don't really know how it will work, but here's your time to call!
Can someone else ask AT&T if these reports actually exist so I know this thread isn't pointless?
Just dial up an ATT rep and ask for unlimited data. They'll most likely say no, but they will also most likely file that report that one guy mentioned.
ok thank.........
In other news, the temperature of earths core has dropped buy over nine thousand degrees.
-sent via 1.21 giggawatts of android.
When I spoke to a CSR manager he didn't say anything about reports but he did confirm that they've been getting bombarded with irate customers who want the unlimited data plan back. His outlook on it was that AT&T was forever changing their plans to meet customers needs and that it was very likely that an unlimited plan would become available in the near future.
BUT and this is a big BUT .... He insinuated that it would come at a heftier price tag. So maybe instead of $30, we might be looking at a $50 all you can eat smorgasbord of data.

Verizon is getting rid of unlimited data too...
Sounds like something I would say to a customer who had spent the last 30 minutes bombarding me with impossible requests.
Just wanted to confirm that I also got 'grandfathered' into an unlimited data plan at $30/month, though it took almost 3 weeks in 'management review' to get there. The problem for me is that I wanted the MEdia Net plan back, and I'm half tempted to tell them to stick their new phone and go back to using my HD2.
Here's why.
In all the years I've been with AT&T (four or more have been out of contract), I've never gone over 200MB a month, and I don't think I've ever gone over 30 text/mms messages a month. Never. Ever. Not when using my Kaiser, and not when using my HD2 both of which were bought privately from Ebay, and not as an upgrade. If anything, I've paid for MEdia net for many months when I didn't use data or messaging at all.
So, for me, a 2G data plan with 200 messages at $20/month would be fine for my needs, and still not hurt AT&T, since I'm not a data hog.
Anyway, just sayin'. YMMV.
Lol I doubt they will bring it back. It had more to do with them having network capacity issues than anything else.
Besides if they actually do keep that info then they will probably corolate the info with the average usage of the people making complaints and if those people are considered high use then it is unlikely their voices will be heard.
Besides I think they where even looking at getting in trouble for the network overload. Doubt they will go back.

[Q] New Data plan required...

Let me get to the point. I just got my G2x yesterday, swapped everything from my N1. On WiFi, np, I can access anything thru the internet. W/o WiFi, I still get MMS and can trick my phone in getting short data, like my current weather in a widget, etc. but when a browser is pulled up, it tells me I have the wrong data plan and I have to update.
Now, I know exactly what this is, my question is more if there is a way of circumnavigating it? I have the same plan I had w/my G1, which was just before the data plans changed and I don't want to have upgrade to one of thier new limited-unltd AND pay more on top of it. I was planning on rooting it anyway as I have my past to Androids (thanks by the way XDA, w/o this site, I couldn't have done it), but was waiting for CM7. I know there are several great ROMs out there though, many more than when I originally flashed my G1 and if by rooting it, I would work around whatever is relaying my phn info.
Oh, and so everyone knows, I haven't updated my imei yet w/TMo, but I've never experienced this before even w/o my imei being updated.
Anyway, hope my rambling has at least stayed near the tracks of reason and someone can give me an answer. If I have to update my service then I have to, I just don't like being "forced" to , makes me think AT&T and I would LOOOOOOVE to get around this!
Thx all...
Call T-Mobile and tell them what you're seeing. They'll probably first tell you that you'll have to upgrade, or pay more. Tell them that is unacceptable and you'd like to be grandfathered in.
See if that works, I've heard that some people who used T-Zones back in the day are grandfathered in at $5.99 for unlimited web. I'm not sure how valid this may be, but try your luck with T-Mobile and post back here what the outcome was.
I'll give it a try, but I'm going to give hope a chance and hold my breath hoping that maybe, just maybe, this can be circumnavigated by freezing and/or removing some sort of pre-installed mothership progam hidden in one of the many bloatware by TMo...
im grandfatherd with the 6 dollar tzones but it cut off on me last week like when i go to the web it tells me my plans not sufficent for it so idk what to do but im not gettin a data plan
If you are on T-Zones I really doubt you will be able to keep it. What I would do is call retentions and try to get them to put the grandfathered $20 Android plan on there so at least you get it for a little bit less.
Pretty much the same thing I'm getting, it redirects me to web2go.com and tells me I have to update my data plan.
Don't get me wrong, if the TMo commercial chick dressed up like a dominatrix, I would make it my screensaver among other things, it doesn't mean I long for my provider to act the role...
Did you renew your contract?? I am still using the $25 plan I got when I had my G1. At some point (can't remember if I was still on G1 or Nexus One) but I had to switch to the "Android Data Plan" instead of the G! plan (to get Visual Voicemail). My price remained the same, just the name changed. But, I didn't renew my contract when I bought this phone.
Nope, no contract.

Do you know the name of the actual plan you have? I am a Tech Care rep and the only time you would need to change from a grandfathered plan is if you had a generic smartphone plan instead of an android specific plan.
You may have to upgrade to the android specific, but there are ways around paying the higher cost. Retentions is a good way, got a guy the $20 buck plan yesterday to match his loyalty Blackberry internet plan through retentions.

as far as i have tried the t-zones or t-web plan will not work, i had to finally ditch mine after 7 years, i did call t-mobile and asked to speak to a loyalty rep. which i then explained that i was not going to pay more than 20 for a plan with a new 2 year upgrade, which did not take to much convincing they gave me the unlimited Android data plan for 20 bucks a month. Trust me i did not want to let go of my 9.99 plan which worked great with my HD2 with 3g speeds, but for an extra 10 bucks a month its worth not having to worry about will it work and trying to find the right settings.
Yeah, I'm sure I'm going to have to buckle as well. Going to flash the CM build that was just released. After that, go the loyalty route I guess.

Which is great, but if one day you need it, they don't have a contact number/e-mail listed on their website and T-Mobile can't help you.
Well, I added the "data throttling removal" patch because at least a few of the posts sounded as if by using this Paul O'Brien patch they circumnavigated the need to change plans. Alas, to no avail, although now, I shouldn't have to worry about data throttling should I downgrade to the (limited) unlimited plan.
It appears than my Holy Grail continues to elude me! At this point, I would even just accept some Knights who say "NI!" I'd trade a shrubbery for a resolution...

[Q] AT& T require 4G data plan!

Hi Forum,
My wife bought a Iphone 4 last year with a 200MG/ month data plan. She gave her Iphone to her nephew. She told AT&T that her Iphone was broken. She has been using my old Samsung Vibrant with no issue from AT&T, for several months now. I got her a used Infuse yesterday and was using data. AT&T sniffed it and sent a text message.
( Did you know an eligible data plan is required for your 4G Smartphone? Pls call 611 to select a plan and establish your 4G data connection today.)
Do any one know what AT&T will do if she continue to use the Infuse?
Thank you in advance for your opinions, and knowledge!
They are going to add the data plan to your account. You have a choice currentley between 200mb/$15 @ overage rate of 200mb/$15, or 2gb/$25 @ overage rate 1gb/$10. if you dont call and choose a plan they will stick you with the 2gb/$25 rate.
Thanks!
So the options are pay more for data or back to the Vibrant! Do you think calling them and explain the situation would change anything?

You can try calling and yelling all you want, theres always that small chance you may get sombody to bend a rule for you. However it is at&t's policy that with all smartphones you are required to have a data plan, so understand you are on the losing side of the battle and can only HOPE sombody bends the rule for you to allow you to continue with no data plan.
She has data plan, 200 mg/ per month for $15. AT&T want her to have 4G data plan.

well than your just on the wrong 200mb/$15 plan, pricing is same for 3g/4g devcies the feature code is just different. call and get it fixed so they dont change you to the $25 plan or somthing stupid
Thank you all!
I resolve the issue with AT&T. After over 30 minutes on the phone, AT&T rep said that I need to provide the SIM and IME number of the Infuse. The data plan is still the same which is 200 Mg/ month for $15. As first, AT&T tried to hook a new 2G data plan. I did not complaint or yell; in fact, I was very polite. I stated that the Vibrant was not getting Voice mail notification, and that my wife hardly use the 200 MG that she has per month. Anyhow, a bit of patience and gratitude seem to do it, this time!

Back when I got my HTC Tilt I had a very annoying situation with them. At the time of contract signing I was told I had to have a data plan. 3 months later on a night I was not even around my phone I had a $200 data charge for megabytes upon megabytes of transfer charges. Complained to high heaven, and had ALL data service cut to my line.
Fast forward to this past Sept, got online to upgrade our two phones. Well it seems I got lucky and got an Infuse WITHOUT any data plan. Kind of annoying I have someone trying to text my photos...wink wink, that I can not receive. However our other phone AT&T was kind enough to automatically add the data plan (most expensive one of course) without indicating this. Only when we got the October bill that I saw this. *** I just hate these mobile carriers with a passion. Been years of bend over and take it up the arse with this fools. Actually had AT&T try to change terms AFTER a contract was signed.
Honestly folks, with these phones how having Google Voice, we have actually talked about saying FU to ALL carriers and just using the internet. Yeah, so I cant call when I am driving...dont want to talk then anyways. Just anything I could do to give these **** the finger.
i wouldn't imagine they can do anything if you didnt buy the phone on contract. but if you are on an iphone unlimited plan they might try like hell to get you off of it.

Are you referring to the terms and cinditions YOU signed, which actually state subject to change at any time without giving notice?
I also want to remind you, you can also leave att at any time

If you buy your smartphone outright, paid full price, they can not make you buy a data plan.
But, you then "can not" use your phone to access the internet or e-mail unless on WiFi. Or they can/will force a data plan on you.
Texting and MMS are part of the Phone plan not data.

unless you have smartphone exclusion, get a dumb phone, put the infuse on that sim card and turn off data.
If u are in contract with att and you buy a phone out of contract u are still required to have a data plan as long as its on an active acct.

FIX !!!
1. Get a.dummy phone put sim card in it and have att put your number on that phone
2. Have them remove data on that phone
3. Hang up with att
4. turn OFF DATA on the infuse(long press power button and turn mobile data off)
also delete att APN
5 enjoy your phone with out att adding data plan on your phone and still use wifi
Ive been using this method for years. Cheers

not if you have smart phone exclusion. my brother uses my old captivate without mms or data on att. only if you lose smart phone exclusion do they force it on you, so if you have a number that never had a data plan you are good, if you had a data plan and got rid of it and bought another phone you need to change phone numbers and sign a new contract to get smartphone exclusion. also how many people are using iphone unlimited plans and arent forced to upgrade to a 4g plan? only people who are suspected of tethering are forced to change.

The smartphone exclusion is being removed if someone has it on the acct and upgrades to a diff phone and data plan. So make sure he doesnt get data added on it

I tryed to change the 3G to a 4G plan (switch from Captivate to Infuse) online.
This did not work right away and so I started a chat with an ATT representative and it was taken care of in no time!
I am jsut wondering, if ya'll ain't got no datat plan. What do you use your smartphone for?

Media player and phone. Before I got my unlimited data plan, I didn't have much of a need for a data plan as I was always on campus using their wifi.

In case anyone comes here with the same question.. I started off with the 2 gig plan a year and a half after they canceled the unlimited plan. Popped my SIM card into the original iPhone set it up in iTunes and 20 minutes later had the unlimited data plan. Popped my SIM card in later that day and get that text every month. Just don't call or mention it. Hint: They don't really care.
