which tablet should I buy

It looks like xda is really working alot on gtab, but i here the screen isnt that good. I love what xda does and android. I am running evo on cm7 and would love the tablet to be ablet to run cyanogen as well. Im just confused on what is good and not.

Not much choice in Tegra 2 ATM or even 10" altogether. If you can wait you MIGHT want to wait and see what actually does ship from what was shown at CES...
gTablet is nice and hackable, but a number of people don't like the poor viewing angles of it's LCD panel. I don't notice this much as when I use the tablet I'm looking directly at it. (Also have a Nook Color which has better viewing angles but, again, I rarely notice this because 99.999% of the time I'm looking directly at the screen...)
If manufacturer support and kernel source are important just don't buy a Chinese tablet, or at least one w/o a western re-badger supporting it, but even then only a handful have released source. There was a list compiled by someone @ Redhat the other week, check back on /. for a link. (I got the NC because I trust B&N to support the NC for a while yet at least, presuming that they don't go under, but be aware that their customer service is beyond awful... and so far Viewsonic is supporting the gTablet...)
Also, any tablet that has 3/4G is likely to be expensive in the US as they will undoubtedly be tied to a carrier(s) who will insist on a grossly overpriced MSRP such that they can look "good" when they offer a deal if purchased w/a 2y contract, however, the total cost will be MUCH higher than even the grossly overpriced unlocked one should it even be offered.

I agree with the positive comments about the G-Tablet made by others here.
Personally, I think the criticisms of the screen are overblown. I find it more than workable and simply don't do things that make it less than optimal. No question it could be better -- but at the price point I think it really is okay.
As I have said in other posts -- I bought my G-Tablets because (1) they are here NOW; (2) the price is much better than the $699-$1100 tablets that aren't even here yet; and (3) who can put a price on the fun we are having making them like we want them? If you don' want to do that then go buy a fruity-pad at way more $$$$.
If I decide I want something else later then I'll go buy it then.

Thx for the comments. Thought about zpad. But it is alot higher for only difference I see is resolution. I don't like how these new ones coming out are tied to carriers. I have a cell phone for gods sake. I don't need 3g. I have wifi and tethering for that

Personally, I think the most portable size is 7" or 8". 10" is a little big to take along.

I think they are the same resolution 1024x600
zpad does however have 3G and GPS if they are must haves for you.

For anyone interested flat compuing has 9 flatpad a-10w tablets left. Just another zpad rebadge. But with a 1366x768 screen. Having owned the gtablet too the screen is a big improvement. Oh and mine was shipped with market.

Daml, I gotta try and verify this with you. I noticed on their site originally they had the a10w listed as 1366x768 but now it has been changed to 1024x600. How can you be sure it has the higher resolution?

Hmm ... that FlatComputing system looks identical to the gTablet ... There is no mention of a different display and the remainder of the hardware is spec'ed identical, isn't it?
For me, I must say that I *cannot stand* the reflective surface or terrible viewing angle of the gTablet. With that said, I'd still buy a gTablet, if the cost/value factored into the mix. There just isn't a better tablet going, for the money, than gTablet *with* VEGAN.

The one you recieved is 1366 x 768? The site says 1024 x 600. It only has 1 GB memory?

Daml: would you mind to send us some screenshots of the viewing angle? Since the hardware are very similar, if the screen is a big improvement, we may be able to replace the gtab screen with this one.

Got my a10w from Flat Computing today. It's a rebranded Advent Vega. As a matter of fact, in the software update instructions it looks like "Find/Replace" missed a Vega reference, lol.
I can confirm that the unit is nearly identical to the G Tablet minus the capacitive buttons on the front of the panel. The screen is 1024x600 and DOES NOT have better viewing angles. My guess is the screen is IDENTICAL to the g tab.
So, needless to say, my A10W will be for sale shortly. Not because there is anything wrong, but I pretty much have no need for two identical tablets

G-Tab vs Xoom vs. Asus EEE trasnformer

Hi Folks.. I have a G-Tab ..but was wondering what the hardware spec differences were between the Transformer (which is about the same price as the G-Tab) and the Xoom which is a bit pricier.. ? Is there a reason to dump the G-Tab for the Transformer or is it the same generation with a better screen?

Well .. It IS an improvement, but might not be one major enuff for you to replace, i personally feel the cream is the screen difference. The other factors may or may not affect you too much. (Not to mention USB)

I went with the Acer A500, since has USB host and micro usb on the tablet, so no need to buy or rely on a KB attachment. Asus Trans is nice, none the less.

Just curious, may i know whats the battery life like? Engadget review stats 7 hours but i find that fishy

You'd be wasting your money with the Xoom -- overpriced with a so-so screen, so toss that out of the equation. Iconia and Transformer are your best bets, though I think the Transformer is the better value, especially with the IPS screen. And should you decide you want the dock, it's an option (I don't, but to some that's the killer feature).
The screen on the Transformer was what grabbed me. I had it on my lap tonight, laying flat, and it looked just as good as if I had it tilted up. Brought a tear to my eye.

So the Iconia is what to get as a holdover until the Transformers have been reviewed more and stock issues sorted out? Thanks for the feedback.

Seriously, we get that you've got issues with the netbook screen used on the gTab, and that just about any screen is going to be better than it.

I don't have issues anymore I solved that problem.
I think the #1 thing gTab owners who are thinking of upgrading want to know is if the screen quality is really worth the extra money. Any time the question is raised, as a former gTab owner, I'm happy to pop on here and let them know that YES, it is worth the upgrade. It is liberating to not have to worry about viewing angles, having almost no difference in how the screen looks no matter which way you turn it. I'm not rubbing it in anyone's face, just saying that if you're on the fence about it, you shouldn't be. The screen is a very important part of the tablet experience, and having a quality screen really made me realize that.

I dunno man, I use the thing for hours on end surfing the couch, and it's quite fine. If you've got one, and you're talking about "upgrading" to a new $400-$450 tab, the net cost after sale is going to be $200+ For that, if I could stand the screen (and I can - I have an iPad2 as well and the screen is nice. Whoo.) I might be better off using the gtab for several more months, until the NEXT generation tablets come out in the summer, or fall.
If you've not bought a tab, and you were going to buy one today, sure. Spend the extra $120 (if you could even find a gtab on sale now that the firesales are over, I think Woot is even finally out of stock) and get any of the 1.5 generation tabs with non-netbook screens. They'll all be better looking screens than the gtab.
If you own one and can't stand the screen, sure, go for it.
Otherwise, it's just a screen with more viewing angles. In 6 months something better will be along, if you hold out for that. Or, you'll be able to buy one of these "better screen" tabs at closeout prices.

Have my original gtab, though it's being sold tomorrow. Just got an Iconia A500 today. Dunno if it's 3.0 the Acer interface or what. This is what a tablet was meant to be like. While I'd like it to be a bit more open and not block me from installing Kindle(wtf?) etc, it's damn nice. Smooth scrolling, responsive etc. Waiting for the Transformer to be in stock for the IPS screen, and barring any horror stories from the early adopters, I'll trade the Iconia in for a Trans.
Ininitla Iconia and Android 3.0 impressions from me? Wow, a HUGE step up from the Gtablet and it's stock OS. Let price be your guide, but if you are on the fence and have the cash, the new stuff is where it's at.

I'm in the market for my first Android tablet - and the Asus EEE seems to fit the bill via price / performance. I had a chance to test drive the ACER A500 at local Electronics store - and it's pretty nice with similar price point / and specs to the ASUS.
The ASUS Transformer has it's own XDA forum - with activity < I'm assuming that means there will be a Developer support for Custom ROMs in the future >
I would think the ACER would have a similar following - but I'm not seeing it on this site. I've seen a couple thread topics I can find via google search - but there's no Acer A500 forum - that suggests community interest?
What am I missing here. Besides the $50.00 price difference - why is Asus getting all the buzz - while the similar Acer device seems to garner little interest?

Acer has bad rep when it comes to laptops already so that may have something to do with it... especially among IT people (trust me, I know).
If you can't make well laptops which is an established product among electronics, how can you be expected to make tablet any better, a fairly new product in electronics?
IPS screen on asus is another one.
Dock is another one

IPS screen and the keyboard dock with a battery which can give 16+ hours of life are the key differentiators for the transformer.

I've been following both products closely and I agree with the OP's confusion. I personally don't regard Acer as any less competent a technology company that Asus. IPS screen, Keyboard dock & $50 are the big benefits for Asus; however, Acer has a the full USB port and a flash on the rear camera.
Regardless, I am testing the Acer right now from BB for a few days and my Asus comes in next week, so I'll compare the screen between the two and let you know what I find. FWIW, I use a NC which has a 7" IPS screen and the Acer screen might not compare but it's certainly not too shabby on its own merit.
Edit: Acer also has a hardware rotation lock switch, something I believe neither the Xoom or Asus has. Coming from a brief stint with the iPad, I would normally welcome this feature - however, it just doesn't work too well on HC. Market auto-forces landscape, my comic reader auto-forces whatever I set through settings - all of this just confuses HC and the hardware lock, causing it to act wonky at times.

Asus has blown up the hype for the Transformer by doing 3 things...
1. hitting everyone over the head that it has an ips screen with gorilla glass®
2. enticing us with the 2for1 thing (tablet to netbook, voila!)
3. selling it at a killer price
4. ADVERTISING..
..and they've been doing this for months. Acer on the other hand, hasn't really buzzed up the Iconia Tab A500. I heard about it ONCE before release. They haven't advertised it and it's really no big deal on their website. It's just another device for them. Seems more like an afterthought and anecdotal "we have one too" tablet, than something they're proud or truly excited to sell.
Asus however, has been advertising the Transformer for months, releasing ads for it, putting up a Facebook page for it and talking about it. Suffice it to say, their hyping is now paying off.
There's interest for the Acer, it's just a whisper vs. the shout for the Transformer. But the proof is always in the pudding so personally I'm trying to patiently wait and see which one is better for me. Currently I own the Iconia Tab and I really like it, though I am quite interested to feel out the Transformer and see how much nicer the screen is and if it would be worth giving up my led flash, usb host port, reset button and sturdy build for.

I picked the Asus because I have the impression that Asus is going to do a better job of supporting the tablet with updates. So far, that appears to be true, especially if some of the developers just responded in the bricked tablet thread. I was sorely tempted by the Acer because of the USB port, I don't particularly care to get the keyboard for the Asus; it's just a tablet for me, I already have a laptop.

All Asus has done is hang around on facebook, they literally haven't done any advertising besides facebook and 1 internet only commercial.

What has Acer done?
Hanging around Facebook for one, is in and of itself pretty potent advertising. And any commercial is still a commercial, no matter how silly it is.

For me, and I think for many people, what really sets the Transformer apart is what gives it the name: the ability to use as a tablet or as a notebook. It's just different/more than a tablet + Bluetooth keyboard, because it's integrated and because the dock has a second battery.
The $399 starting price doesn't hurt, either. And $399 sounds better than $449 no matter how you slice it.

IPS screen and the low price. That's why I targeted it versus the ACER.
I love ACER - my son has an ACER netbook and both my LCD's are ACER. But IPS was what I wanted in my next tablet, so ASUS won.

Summarize what people are saying and make your choice.
It's obviously worth the wait if you need an IPS display or the transformer dock because nothing else right now can give you that. If these aren't THAT important and you need a tablet next week, you might as well go at least take a look at the Acer.

I could really use one too.
I just wish I " knew " how long I had to wait for the Asus EEE to be available. It appears it's a 2 week wait - but that's just a best guestimate from what I've been reading online.
But is the consensus - that this device will have good support on this forum - vs - comparable spec tablets. And it's worth the wait? I'm going to be using the .pdf reader function pretty heavily.

It looks like i might have to get the acer to get me buy until i can get a transformer, as long as it's within 14days. I really like the specs on the transformer, IPS + Gorilla glass + Dock + $399. I also like the community the transformer has behind it.

Keep an eye out. It is regularly showing up in Fry's. It'll be showing up more and more regularly. I was lucky, had good timing on checking for in store availability at Fry's, and purchased the only one received that morning right after it was received. Picked it up 10 minutes later.
They are sporadically hitting the B&M Frye's around the country.

Transformer vs. Iconia vs. Thrive

Just a quick overview: I was in Best Buy the other night, and fortunately, they had all 3 machines not only powered on, but also on WiFi. I couldn't resist this, since I'm beginning to seriously look at a 10" tab to replace my oft maligned (And rightly so) Gentough78. (Yeah, yeah.. I know) Anyway, having all 3 side by side was nice. Here's my thoughts:
Screen: The winner was the Thrive. It had very good contrast. The other 2 were completely acceptable though.
Case: I like the rubberized backing of the Thrive a LOT. That being said, it was a close 2nd place to the Xformer (Heretofore called the XF). Didn't care for the clunkiness of the Iconia.
WiFi performance: The Iconia stuttered a lot on the youtube video I was playing. The other 2 seemed to handle this just fine.
WiFi Tethering: The XF was the only one of the 3 that saw my hotspot on my Epic. This is a pretty big deal.
Snappiness: Hard to tell the diff between the 3, honestly. They were all nice.
Dock: Obviously this is an awesome on the XF
So... overall, as it stands, I'm seriously looking at the XF as my tab of choice. Just thought I'd share my thoughts here. How's the tun.ko working out on IPSEC VPN???

Fellow epic user! I was faced with the same decision and got the TF because of the hotspot issue. I have no regrets and i dont even have the dock. I use my stylus for most everything. I also like how the OS has no annoying UI over top.

i currently have both the thrive and transformer and i have to say you are wrong, the IPS display on the transformer is noticeably better. It's richer in color and has better viewing angles. I am returning the thrive because its just too fat!

Either way, they are good choices. I really don't need the ports on the Thrive, and I really like the TF's weight and thinness compared to the Thrive since I usually throw it in my bag, or walk around carrying it in my hand when I'm using it as a Mp3 player (which is all the time). Since the Thrive has a LED screen, blacks are probably darker than on the TF but I haven't tested.

I agree, I found the TF screen to be superior. The only other andriod tablet I thought had a display that could compete with the TF was the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Did you check to see if the brightness setting where set to the same approximate
brightness.

You can't test anything in 20 minutes at best buy. They all are a tie because ech line has a feature specific to its self. I think it comes down to personal preference and how will it be used. I chose the Asus because of the free software Splashtop and Polaris, but do wn a Acer too. The Acer states hooked up to my TV with wireless keyboard and mouse to stream movies or surf the web.

Nope... should have. In all fairness, the screens were in pretty mucky shape too. They all had streaks and smudges from all of the dirty fingers of the crumb crunchers who had played with them. The 2 Xooms wouldn't even come on, so I didn't check them out (Although in all fairness, the $100 extra kind of excluded them anyway)
When I get a little closer to being actually able to afford one (I'm just over 1/2 way there now), I'll go give them a lot closer look, and I'll probably bring a microfibre cloth. I'd never let any of my screens get that nasty.
And I'll pay extra close attention to the viewing angles. That's something I hadn't thought of.

The Xoom, the screen isn't as good as the others. The color temp and viewing angle are inferior.

I bought the Iconia and returned it. I just thought the plastic port area on the sites ruined the high-end feel of the brushed metal. And it was too heavy to comfortably hold while reading. I love the ports though. The Toshiba tablet was just too huge. My TF is great. But build quality is so-so; I got a squeeky area around the power button. No big deal though.

Asus TF has the best screen and the value-for-money dock
Iconia has the full size usb port
Thrive has the full size usb port and hdmi port but loses out on weight and bulkiness.
and all three devices uses the same SoC, the Tegra2 so i wouldn't compare performance.
and there are other scientific ways to test the WiFi performance than testing with a youtube video

and all three devices uses the same SoC, the Tegra2 so i wouldn't compare performance.
and there are other scientific ways to test the WiFi performance than testing with a youtube video

Sure, but with a locked down market and running fast through the testing since other people were looking, it was the 1st thing that came to mind. I'm not a professional reviewer, I just play one on TV...

I'd get the transformer. If you're referencing the BF deal then the Asus has 16gb for $250 while the Thrive is 8gb for $275. To me, that's no contest.

Is this the best android tablet?

I had the Prime, but took it back because of the hardware issues.
A few months later, I am looking to get a 10" tablet again. Is the TF300T the best choice?
I am surprised at the lack of activity in here.
The Nexus tablet could be cool, but it's only 7". I think I will order the TF300T, it's $530 on amazon with the keyboard.

Depends how you define "best". Do you mean the thinnest, the lightest, the fastest, the best screen, the best audio,......no. It's not.

It's definitely near the top of the bunch, but I wouldn't call it the best. That title would probably go to the Transformer Pad Infinity or whatever they're calling it. It will however give you the most value for your money.
It's essentially a Prime except 1mm thicker, a bit heavier and with a less bright screen. All the GPS, bluetooth, wifi and quality issues have been dealt with here though, plus the Micro SD and regular SD card slots are a tad deeper so the cards won't go flying anytime soon.
So while in terms of raw specs it isn't at the top of the line, it's pretty damn close and it's pretty cheap considering what you're getting. I remember last year I bought the 14mm thick Toshiba Tab for more lol.

One of the best I had, but I can´t compare it to the prime.
Fantastic Wlan and GPS, For me the screen is nearly perfekt, if you root it and put one of the custom roms out there on it it´s smooth and fast. And on the bench you are not so far away from a prime, when you OC your Tf300. So for me: One of the best for that price.

I have thought about it, and my most wanted features are:
Processing Speed: Looks like tegra 3 is the best right now. I do like the processor, and I think it makes more sense to have that in a tablet vs a phone because the tablet will have a bigger battery. I see that the new tablets coming out have 2GB of ram. I'm pretty excited about that.
Display: I do want to do some basic photo editing on the tablet, and look at my pics taken with my phone. 1080p would be nice, but not necessary.
Hardware quality: The Prime's issues really bummed me out. I hope Asus does better with the Infinity.
Updates: I was looking at the Galaxy Tab 7.7. but it's still on Honeycomb. This is unacceptable. Good thing Asus is quick to update their products.

What tablet or tablets out have 2 gb of ram? As far as I know the tf300t is the only one that has the best ram with 1gb ddr 3 ram. People were talking that the Acer a510 has ddr 3 ram but it doesn't. The Acer a700 with 1080p screen still clocked at 1.3 has 1 gb ddr2 ram that isn't out yet but pre order price of 449.99 is great. The tf700 will handle the 1080p screen much better with it being clocked at 1.6 and ddr 3 ram. But I heard it will come out next month at 499.99 for the 32gb version.
For the money and functionality you can't beat the tf300 unless you can wait a month. I think the tf700 will be a monster at 500 bucks.

You all convinced me. My TF300T is coming tomorrow. $515 with the keyboard and one day shipping.

I did about the same but had to do some big bartering with price matches etc and multiple ads etc.

If they had released the red one first I wold definitely buy one of these and upgrade my tf101 but after seeing the infinity... I'm gonna happily wait for that

I think its the best tablet in its price category. It beats out other tablets in the 300-400$ range as far as hardware. But it'll be hard to compare it to other, more expensive tablets that are out/coming out.
You can't beat the tegra 3 and DDR3 right now.

asus is going to release the pad infinity which also has that same resolution too, but its screen is IPS+, for acer i think it's just IPS, and according to androidauthority, it will be released at the price $499, i'm hoping it's the wifi only 32 gig version, so if that's true, you just need to spend $50 more to get the pad infinity, i can't think of anything to "complain" about it at that price.
also the pad infinity has better specs, like flash camera, 8-megapixel camera on the back, 2 megapixel on the front, dockable,...
imo, acer products are not good, many people say asus products are always better than acer. i would never consider buying an acer product

I really dig my TF300, just sucks that I got it right when something newer and better is about to come out. Then again, that's every time when it comes to tech devices.
Regarding the Pad Infinity, I'm reading from multiple websites that the price will most likely be around $785USD. That's way to pricey for me but I'm leaning towards keeping my TF300 anyways. Compared to the Acer, the screen is really the only big difference. Not sure if I want to trade something good for something that could be faulty just for the screen.

For me it was the price.
I can tinker with it as much as I want to without being overly afraid of bricking it.
On top of that it's got really nice specs.
Good processing power, decent screen, awesome sound.
And cheap!

yes, you're making a good decision
this is what i'm doing too. if they release it at the end of June, then we only have to wait a half month
hopefully $499 is the price for the wifi only version, not the 4G LTE version with contract

We have 3 tf300 in the house but at least one will be replaced by the tf700.

Ive had A LOT of tablets, and currently own 2 TF300's, and the galaxy tab 7.7. And love both for different reasons. The 7.7 has the best screen out of all Ive had, but as you pointed out the lack of updates from Samsung sucks, but I still love it. And once it does get ICS Ill love it even more. But for the 10" market the TF300 is hard to beat. After several TF300's with dust, hair, fuzz under the screen, and a dead pixel I finally have a good 32gb. I also have a 16gb thats currently being repaired at Asus and the repair is being paid for by Best Buy. Ill be returning that one for a refund when I get it back. But despite all this I love my TF300.
