cracked screen... - Thunderbolt General

Just got my phone pushed off a counter... Cracked the screen :-( should I claim insurance on it or is there a cheaper way?

No way bro take it to verizon and tell them that **** just suddenly cracked when you were trying to use their backup assistant bull crap.
I kid...yeah insurance fo sho.

Warranty won't cover cracked screen

Not to mention that is fraud, which is not exactly something you should recommend in a public forum...

Make the person who pushed it off the counter pay the insurance amount.

Insurance is meant to cover things like this. That's not fraud

I accidentally pushed my phone off of the bathroom counter and it landed flat on the screen. Not a scratch on the screen but there is a hairline crack in the top left corner of the casing. Strange that the case would crack before the screen.

Ya this is what insurance is for so it not fraud. But I was more wondering if there is a replacement screen for this phone out yet that I could buy and fix myself? And ya when the phone dropped it landed right on the corner so all force of impact was concentrated in one spot...

He can use a lighter and heat up the void sticker. Use tweezers and carefully remove it. It will all come off in one piece, then you can open it up, replace what needs to be replaced, put it back together, and put the sticker back over the screw. VZW will never know.

A blow dryer is better than a lighter for this.

Hahaha using a blow dryer to heat up the void sticker. I gotta try this!

I only got back the purchase price from Amex, not enough to replace it

I would recommend going through the insurance to get it replaced. The same thing happened to my Thunderbolt (today, actually) and it was relatively hassle-free. Functionality of the phone wasn't really affected so the cost was only $99.00 for the replacement. I figure it's better to pay this and start with a fresh phone than waiting until something really breaks on it.

Luckily i had issues with updating to JH7 and i was able to get my phone replaced through ATT without hassle for free. They didnt even mention anything about the scratches.
Now ive got a screen protector and a nice all black cheapo TPU skin case.
I have best buy insurance. It's like 8 bucks a month, no deductable. Covers scratches.

Small scratch that only I can see
Got a small scratch that I'm kinda anal about, but like someone else said I'll wait until something really bad happens before I try out my insurance. I pay around 4 or 5 dollars a month thru at&t for my insurance, didn't know the deductable was that much. By the way, does anyone know of anything that will remove small scratches?
I have a cheap case I got off of ebay and it's saved my phone more than once. I literally saw it bounce a few times as it hit the pavement, it still hurts to see but I'm glad I have my silicone case on it.

There is a product made by Maguires for plastics to remove scratches. I used it at my upholstery company to take scratches off of the plastic windows on boats and convertibles it should work on your phone. Im sure an automotive place would have some or a detail shop.

I dropped my captivate a few times, but there was this one time...
I was talking, and holding it with my shoulder while I was working on a router.. Standing about 6'2", I was leaned over a bit, so I think it fell from about 5.5 feet, and landed on the bottom left corner.. square onto a concrete floor.. It has a blemish (hardly noticeable, unless you look really close) on that corner now, but the screen is 100% undamaged.
I love this phone, and I'll never ever trade it until we see 2GHz speeds. The only case I have for it is a holster that sits on my belt..
BTW, I also took a key and a pair of scissors to try and scratch the screen with no success.. Heck.. I've thrown it across the room to my daughter a few times.. (Good thing she can catch!)

Check craigslist. Here in Houston there are a number of places that replace/repair cell phone that specialize in damaged screens, all of the advertise on craigslist. Of course, if you have the insurance, it's a moot point.
You can buy the screen on ebay if you're interested in repairing it yourself.

My screen shattered too Asurion was screwing me over so I got annoyed and called a repair place to have it fixed. Yeah they f'd up my phone even worse... hairs under the screen along with finger prints...none of the four buttons on the front were press-able they were perminitly stuck in, glue pealed up in an hour, power button lost its resistance, and on top of all that the thing wouldn't even turn on and the led stay orange after unplugging it from the charger.
They told me the battery died while fixing it just take it home and charge it and I would be fine (it was handed to me in a bag all wrapped up so the "glue could dry") yeah they were way wrong. Mind you this phone was 100% fully functional and in mint condition when I dropped it off for repair, just the glass was shattered. Took it back the next day and they tried to act like I had no reason to be pissed off about all this and tried to blame it on me, needless to say I got my money back called Assurion in their parking lot and got a replacement after explaining to the girl all the trouble I went through.
Moral of the story, be careful of repair places with this phone.

Mine is also somewhat loose, but it is like that on purpose. Flexibility is key if you do not want your screen to crack even easier. If your screen is completely rigid it will not survive a fall as well as a flexible screen.

Well that technique might work. Obviously you'd want to put a piece of cloth in between the phone and the object you're using as a weight.
Or, if it's on the edge as you say, one of those wooden clothes pins, or other type of spring clamp (I'd go easy on that option, some of those clamps are powerful and could be too much.)
I don't know how permanent this method would be in the long run, especially when hotter whether comes around. If the adhesive was poorly applied in the first place, or if the adhesive was of a weak batch at the factory, the problem, it seems to me, will just resurface.
Though it's a PITA, the only 100% successful fix is a warranty replacement.

I just tried pushing down in the area on my phone, and I see what you're saying.
There's a flexibility, but it's uniform -- it will flex slightly anywhere along that edge that I press.
Without more detailed info from the op, it's hard to tell whether this is what he's referring to, or, since he did indicate "near the search button," whether the just that corner is lifting noticeably compared to the others.

There is actually thread about this already, but I will say something. I had this problem, except mine grew worse and now the bottom middle of the screen has lifted just like the edge. It is actually a manufactures defect, according to both the htc reps I talked to, but believe me it is a hassle to get att to do anything. They wanted me to pay 125 for insurance or 399 for a refurb. I was like are you f***ing serious? You want me to pay the "new" price for a refurb phone under warranty when I already payed out of contract price, and the phone came from the manufacture that way..Any way long story short after a few threats of cancellation and a 3-way call with htc, they told me to drive an hour and a half to a device support center, and gave me a 25 dollar credit... This pissed me off even more, so I ranted on their face book and some one from corporate told me to email them and now they are replacing my phone.

I just now noticed it on mine as well. Mine isn't even noticable unless you're trying to press on it and feel it "press down", but even then it barely moves. There is an adhesive layer underneath and I imagine just applying some heat from a heat gun may re-attach the glass to it.

If so, now I'm REALLY convinced ATT doesn't do **** to the refurb phones to fix them prior to resending out the phone to another customer for a warranty replacement. Captivate reburbs were/are dog****.
The least they can do is check to see the phone they are sending out as a replacement doesn't have the same problem as the phone they are replacing.
Hope you don't have to go through this crap again. Remember what you, yourself said, the other one just got worse.
HTC may be the only true solution.

Thankfully I'm not noticing anything wrong with any of my corners of my inspire, but I really should get some type of screen protector for this phone, I'm starting to notice some very small lines on the glass, I guess they were right when they mentioned that the glass can't be scratched by a key, but can be easily scratched by small dust.

I'm sure you can scratch it with a key. Metal is metal. It will eventually abrade anything except another metal that is harder than itself.
It's not standard "on the shelf" dust. It's the dust of materials that are hard enough to have abrasive qualities that are going to scratch things.
I've had my phone since March 2nd, heavy usage every day. Never had a screen protector. Around all sorts of potential damaging particulates. ZERO scratches, scuffs, or marks of any kind.
Always kept in a felt lined belt holster. Never set down with screen facing down. Never put it in my pocket, no matter if the pocket is empty or not.
Obviously, dropping the phone is a whole other scenario, but aside from that, it's all in the care and handling...

I got this service for $7.99 with my HOS last year when I got it.

Now that they have the black HOS at T-Mo.
What would qualify as enough damage for replacement?
I ask this because I was going to get my top cover replaced and figured may as well see how much I can get out of this.
Don't wanna sound like I'm intentionally damaging my phone for a replacement with the T-mo rep.

I work for tmo, so maybe I could help you out. Back plate as in the sim card cover on the top back of the phone?
And tmo will only send the black one if that's what they have in stock as far as a warranty replacement. Doing a warranty exchange is $5 on the next bill.
If the phone is damaged (I.e. water damage, major physical damage, cracked screen etc.) then you have to do an insurance claim with Asurion which is $130 on the spot.

If there's physical damage/water damage then yeah, it'll be another $130 unfortunately. But at least it's cheaper than full cost. But depending on the damage, I'd consider self repair and then replace anything that could void your warranty (void sticker screw tops, water damage indicators etc.)
What sranimo said is correct, after the second insurance claim that's it for the year, so use it wisely. I personally don't think that's right, but hey, what can a sales rep do? Lol

Took off my case and found... a mysterious bend.

I'm kind of sad about it really. It has never been significantly dropped. My friend dropped his like 4 feet onto a metal bench press bar and only dented the side slightly inward. I seemed to have managed to bend my phone. It no longer lies flat, it rocks, and there is this strange outward dent like a support beam needed somewhere to go. You can clearly see the bend when you look at the side view volume buttons. I'm sure my warrenty is voided as they would likely claim this cannot be from normal use. I've dropped it onto carpet a couple times and thrown it on my bed. It remains a mystery. Maybe my pants are too tight? For reference this is the case I use. Not over the top protection but it should save it from most soft falls I would think. Pictures attached. Sorry for the eh quality. It was a dark room and I don't have a macro lens for my DSLR.
Looks to me like possible damage from when you removed the case itself?

That's a good thought. Maybe, but I think the case is honestly too soft for that. I would expect the plastic to tear before the side bends, although who know. It's not a super thick case and the little lip that could, unlikely, fit in the small gap is rather thin. Plus the power button being bent and it not sitting quite flat on the screen have me skeptical about that. I don't think I've ever ripped the case off hard either, I dunno. I'm honestly not sure what to think about that possibility. Think it could pull the metal out like that?
Really thin piece of metal there. If the case caught caught down between and you pried it off I could see it bending like that. Just a thought.
well

ok just saying, somewhere around here there is a thread on the replacement backs and speaker grills youTube is a wonderful thing and sure beats being without your device.
but if you choose to do it yourself make sure you watch all the videos you can get your hands on I have run into misleading ones in the past and done mild damage to external components due to very vague and misleading videos but if you do your homework and you are thorough and believe the video you watched to be very thorough they will usually tell you what parts you need to purchase in advance and it should only take the average person with an hour to do any repairs of the sort
I've bent my phone the exact same way.. Just get a small screw driver, butter knife etc.. Tape the end incase you slip and won't scratch it and push it back in.
Mine bent too. I think it has to do with the case. It probably bent it. I tried to push mine back in, but to no avail. Luckily for me though, my volume button ended up bending too. It bent to the point where it didn't work anymore. So I took to Verizon and they gave me a replacement no questions asked. No more bends. [emoji2]

Called them and they said they don't cover any physical damaged of any kind regardless of how it happened. It also apparently cracked my screen from it being uneven. And my free replacement was up in November.

Sorry, I edited. I thought the volume button was bent... Man I sure did get lucky.

They do say that you are ineligible if the device is damaged, but mine was damaged, and even had a few dents aside from the bend on the volume button, and they still happily ordered me a replacement. YMMV
Bent
My is bent the same way. I am very careful with it and have treated very gently. Contacting HTC to see what they say.

They told me I could send it in for repair and dispute the charges later and that it was my only option. I don't have that kind of time though and I cannot afford to be without a phone that long. I'm currently job seeking so I live on the damn thing. Keep me posted on what they say to you.
Same thing happend to my phone, I just bent the metal back into its place.

I recently sent my M8 in for warranty repair, due to blown speakers (I manage a machine shop, so you can imagine the metal particles everywhere). I had dropped the phone on asphalt this past summer (2 days before I received the TPU case I had ordered), gouging up the back, and also had a dent/impression in the back of the case, like it had been pressed hard against an edge or corner of something.
I went through HTC directly, and they never questioned the damage to the back, and sent back my phone with a nice and shiny new back on it. Their customer service is superb.

My screen ended up cracking in one small spot due to the bend. HTC said I can send it in and see what their warranty team says and if needed appeal the charges since it bent on its own. They did say no guarantee that would work though. Think it's worth the shot? I also have insurance so anything more than 100 dollars (including the cost of shipping it in) is a waste.

If your phone is less than a year old, don't even bother with your "insurance". Just talk to HTC. I thought for sure my phone was out of warranty with HTC (I don't have Asurion), but to my surprise, it was still in warranty. No deductible, and you just pay for shipping to their depot in Texas.

I did, they said the main issue was the screen crack. It's not covered after the first six months. And whether or not they'd cover it in this case is up to whoever processes it at the warehouse.
