[Q] Keyboard use/demo videos? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know no one has the keyboard yet, but does anyone have links to videos that show how the touchpad/dpad works?
Specifically I want to know that I won't have to reach up and touch the screen when i'm using it in laptop mode.
Is there a cursor present? Does it work everywhere or just the browser?

I dont recall where I saw it, but I can confirm that a cursor is present. It works the same as the lapdock for the Motorola Atrix. Clicking is like tapping the screen, click + drag is a swipe. Pretty simple concept.

There was a pretty good video in Italian by HDblog or something like that. I'll see if I can find a link, but you could probably find it pretty easily on YouTube.
It showed a cursor on the homescreen, plus multitouch gestures on the trackpad (pinch-zoom, two finger scroll, etc.)
Edit: I think this is it, but can't confirm because my office blocks youtube.

Thanks for this. Exactly what I was looking for.

You can also 2-finger scroll through your homescreens using the touchpad.

This thread has a couple of You Tube videos of an actual user with the keyboard dock. Look at the second one for the main overview of the keyboard in use. I have to say I can't wait for my dock to come through, it really does look awesome.

This series of videos by Asus does have some examples of keyboard usage, particularly if you scroll down it will show the dock being connected to an external hard drive. Nice!

Hi. New here, have some questions about ThrottleLauncher & Touchflow

Hi all.
Kind of new to this all, and just fumbling my way through everything.
I have ThrottleLauncher loaded on my AT&T Tilt, along with Touchflow3d (and TFlow3D_gullum)
And after seeing the youtube clip on the .9 beta and what it can do, I am finding that I cannot get my phone to really respond in all the ways that I'm seeing in the video. Maybe Im missing some plugins or something else, but here are some questions:
First is the main toolbar at the bottom. Whenever I touch it and want to slide it around to get to specific icons, it doesnt really rotate, it just kind of slides a bit and then activates something. I'm not able to scroll around on it unless I use the directional pad on the phone. Also, is it possible to 'replace' programs that launch with the icons? For example, instead of the Phone's contacts launching, can I get it to launch my 'Good' software contact list? Or with the music player, I am using FlipSlide. Can the music icon be reset to launch Flipside instead of the windows media player?
Can those icons on the bottom be put in any specific order?
I also see in the .9 beta video, that you can flip the middle of the screen by the clock to see different clock views or appointments, etc... Not sure which version or theme that is.
I guess my biggest question is how do I get the bottom toolbar to actually scroll instead of activating things, and can that bottom bar be customized to point to other apps?
Thanks.
If I'm posting this in the wrong spot, please let me know.

multitouch onscreen-keyboard

I have played around with some of the multitouch apps (browser, maps, image-gallery examples) and found them quite impressive. My question is, can the onscreen-keyboard be hacked to allow for multitoutch?
i know the keyboard is pretty useful but it would be better to have the multi touch features. The screen supports multutouch and it is a bit stupid that apple can copyright multitouch. alot of my friends mock the android cos it doesnt have mutitouch (stupid iphone snobs)
so, is it possible?
I'm sure it would be possible. There honestly should be multi-touch support for the virtual keyboard. Not to display 2 letters at a time obviously, but to just que the second letter to allow for faster typing rather than have it skip between 2 letters. The iphone does have multi-touch support on its VK for the same exact reason of faster typing.

so where are you seeing all of this stuff with the multi touch?
Yeah, I don't think multi-touch is available for Maps and Gallery. If I'm wrong could someone shoot me a link please?
Multi touch is only available in the browser. There were some demos you could install on your phone of the maps and gallery but they were just demos not the actual program.
As for the VK not sure why you would need it. Maybe type faster but other than that I see no need for it.
He's talking about the multitouch examples here: http://lukehutch.wordpress.com/2009/01/25/get-multi-touch-support-on-your-t-mobile-g1-today/
I don't really see what all the hype is about multi-touch. The only reason I can see it being useful is for games, and maybe if a shift key was inserted in the VK. Other than that, I feel it just becomes more difficult. Sure, it's cool technology, but isn't it easier to zoom using your thumb, holding the phone with one hand, than having to use two fingers or two separate hands? I've been running JF builds for months which multi-touch, and barely use it at all.
Multi touch allows for faster typing. Especially if you're typing in landscape mode with your thumbs going at it. I've noticed it would skip letters for me on various occasions because of it not registering hits that are too close to each other.
Why wouldn't you just open the keyboard...
I don't get it
I agree about typing. I also think the iphone's way of zooming in/out on the map is easier, too. It is all preference, but I really want the multi-touch map. Having it as an option would satisfy the masses.
To be honest, after the novelty of having multitouch on the browser wore off I found myself using the "+" and "-" buttons on the screen anyway!

Personally, I hate those freaking on-screen zoom in/out buttons with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns. They're always popping up in the way of links that are placed at the bottom of web pages and I constantly hit that stupid button in the bottom right of the screen, opening that useless panning box. IMHO on-screen menus should never be placed in front of content. Am I the only one that thinks that's completely retarded?
multitouch
frankly i like the circle zoom!! i thnk tht wud b more convinient then the multi touch unless ur in landscape mode for some reason or another but yes i wud really like multi touch vk!! i need to b able to type faster but i still use my hardware keyboard for fast typing!
i prefer using two fingers to zoom in and out. I feel that by using two fingers you see where you are zooming and dont have a finger in the way. As multitouch is enabled in the rom, using two fingers emulates a finger press in between them, which can get quite enoying if you type fast ir knock a key by accident, u get a random key in the middle.
I know its not essential but these little things give it a nicer feel.

It's a matter of personal preference. Is that not why we like open source so much? Some of us don't want to open keyboards every 4 seconds. Some of us have magic's sans hardware keyboards.
I for one welcome any improvements that I may or not use but in the end they are improvements.

Because, I text a LOT. Between work and twitter and friends... I'm texting all the time. sometimes it's just faster to start typing.. plus I'm sure it's better on the hinges to not keep snapping the thing open every minute.

Morphgear DPad with Visible Buttons in Landscape!!! (For HD2)

Ok so I posted some bit's of this already but I have refined the original "Proof of concept" design to something a bit more useable.
It annoyed me that I could not see the buttons in Landscape mode but I could see the sides of the screen when it is set to Autoscale. This set me to try and make a pad that would fit into the tiny slivers of screen left in landscape mode with "Autoscale" set.
This pad needs to be used in "AutoScale" mode on a WVGA screen such as an HD or HD2 This setting leaves a slither of screen each side of the screen that I have used to show the button placement. Don't get me wrong, you can't fit a Dpad in that area BUT you can easily mark top and bottom left of it and that's a start.
I find that my thumb is a bit lazy and I struggle a bit to use a square DPad, because of this I have squished it a bit to a more suitable rectangular shape, have a go and tell me if it's no good - If you imagine that the visible "strip" at the side is 1/4 of the DPads width then you should get it pretty easily. Please take a look at the attached picture though, I have made this pad a slightly odd shape because I find that I use left and right a cack load more than I use up and down. It may not be great for all games but I have found that it suits my thumb better than a standard equal layout. If you hate it then try using my original pad found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6339454#post6339454
Other than this the Start (ST) Select (SE), A, B, R1 and R2 buttons are all visible at the edge of the screen!
Currently the GBA pad is the only one I have done but I could easily modify this concept to cover all of the different systems - The only reason I haven't is that I only really play GBA games on my phone.
There is a readme included but I'd like some feedback so please bring it on!
Hey man, good job. I like the v1 rather than this, i find it harder to hit the up arrow with the new one, but it's not the reason why i'm wiriting this.
Both your pads makes the game laggy when i tap the white (unassigned) space. Other pads I've tried never did that. Any idea how to selve this? Or am i the only one experiencing this lag?
is multitouch available for morphgear?

Hi I find that they all lag a bit, it seems to be the way that the Multitouch is implemented (I don't think it's Blutz, rather the original Morphgear crew), I find that when I have 2 buttons pressed all is fine but if I press NE and A (so 3 buttons reported to Morphgear) it lags until I release all buttons. This is just my laymans observation.
I could try producing an ultra light version to see if that helps... I think my skin is >2mb
Could you give me some examples of ones that don't cause it and I'll have a look, I wouldn't be overly surprised to find it was something I had done wrong. What we really need is the capacity to set white = NULL!

[Q] For all of you who have the Transformer..

Hey everybody,
Been lurking the forums for days now and am anticipating as much as you guys (believe me, my F5 button is worn out).
Question for everybody who has a transformer:
When you have a USB (external) mouse connected, can you click AND drag text (in the browser/MS Word/etc), or does it behave as if you are using the trackpad?
This isn't a deal breaker at all, just curious as that I can't find the answer to this anywhere (unless they are hiding it in the reviews).
to select text, you click a single worth and it highlights that word. Around the highlighted word are two draggable lines. You then drag those further to highlight more or less.
I believe I saw it on a video review
What device you use, be it a mouse, a trackpad, joystick or Harry Potter magic wand, it will not change the way android 3.0 works. Well maybe the wand can, but honeycomb does not allow dragging text..
And besides, none of us have the dock yet so no USB ports....

Keyboard dock

I know there have been a couple of posts dotted around asking about the keyboard dock but I've seen nothing definitive.
I have the dock and it worked great with Honeycomb. I neglected to think about how it would work with a custom ROM before flashing one.
I've gone for the CM9 ROM and although generally typing on the keyboard works it is far less functional. The majority of the (very useful) hotkeys don't work.
Including:
Home
On screen KB up/down
Menu
Play/Pause Media
Makes the whole thing far less useful :-(
I'm interested in if anyone knows anything I can do to make this better on CM9 or even if it's likely to work better with any different ICS ROM?
Yes, the keyboard dock hotkeys don't work, all except the back key. But even more annoying it is that the software keyboard shows up and it shouldn't.

I do not have a genuine Samsung keyboard (yet) but you should be able to map home, menu and the media buttons with my app: http://www.apedroid.com/android-applications/external-keyboard-helper
You can also specify up to 16 apps and create shortcuts for them. For example you could start the browser with Alt+B and Gmail with Alt+G if you want to.
Yep
I remember that happening occasionally before but it's constant now and even more inconvenient without the convenient hotkey to hide it.
Can I assume this is pretty constant regardless of the ROM used?

Yes I think so unless it is a HC rom based on a stock ROM.
I'll fix some of it in the CM9 port once I recieve my BT keyboad case and have something to test with. If you just want to get rid of the on-screen keyboard you can use my free app that does that and nothing more: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelperfree
If you want full control you need my paid app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
Free demo: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelperdemo
Thanks for the advice. Your app looks really helpful.
I've no problem buying the pro version but want to have a play with the demo one a little more first.
I'm having slight issues trying to map a few things:
App switching: can map keys to this but doesn't seem to do anything
"Internet" / "Mail" - these two keys aren't picked up by the mapping config as they immediately jump away launching the browser (I'd love to remap to chrome) or asking me whether i want Gmail or Mail (and not remembering my selection)
I've mapped home (hooray!) but although it takes you back to the launcher it doesn't necessarily take you back to the default screen as the onscreen home button does (that's a really small issue!)
Any thoughts about those?
On the subject of the demo version of the app... Is the only thing that's different between that and the pro version that the spacebar is mapped to: _This_is_a_demo_version!_?

The problem with keycodes is that some are handled erlier in the input queue before I can process it in my app. App switcher and Home is two examples. I managed to do a workaround for Home but I have not yet found a way to bring up the app appswitcher programatically.

Same reason here. Android propably picks up and processes these before the app get a chance and therefor the scancode is never passed on. However, when I get my BT keyboard dock I can investigate this more.

This is due to the nature of the workaround. I just launch the launcher which gives almost the same effect as when the system processes the Home keycode (apart for the difference you noticed)

The versions are identical apart from the space button and some strings (demo vs pro, buy vs rate) so you can test out everything before buying.
You really should try the application shortcuts. Choose apps for A0 to AF and enter A0 to AF instead of characters when doing a custom layout. You could put the Email app on Alt+E and Gmail on Alt+G etc... Setting it up could be bit more userfriendly but once you figure it out it is not that hard to do.
Have got the pro version now and the overall effect is not much worse than the keyboard was under honeycomb so thanks very much.
Have setup a few short cuts (chrome and Gmail) and mapped them to some of the otherwise non-working function keys so that's great too.
