Anyone else in the NYC area having data issues? My data connection went down around midday today and hasn't returned. I called Verizon and they said that several towers were down in the area, but a friend with a Droid Incredible had a solid 3G connection this evening. I'm wondering if this is an issue with my phone or if it's the network.
I'm running a rooted TB with Virus ROM.

I'm not in NYC, but in Northern NJ (Paramus) I haven't had any data outages whatsoever.
I was In nyc today all day and my data was fine

In central NJ here. Sporratic data all day long. Sometimes can't even send/receive texts.
I traveled from Jersey City (2 miles from downtown NY) to Montvale in North Jersey without any issues.

Hey, you were right up by me!
Downtown NYC and South Shore of Long Island.....had 4g all day....no blips at all!
Jersey city here... no problems at all
Thanks for the feedback. Going to flash a couple of new kernels and see if that might be the issue. Flashing back to stock hasn't helped, though, so I'm not hopeful.

I live in Central Jersey too and was having problems during the day. My phone seems fine now though.
In the event that I'm not the only person in all of NYC having issues, I'll post a quick follow up before calling it an evening. I've tried flashing back to stock, flashing a new kernel, toggling the radio off and on, multiple battery pulls, basically anything I could think of and nothing has worked. I called Verizon again and they said they still have towers out in the NYC metro area. I was encouraged to wait until tomorrow to see if data returns.
Here's hoping that I will wake up to a solid 4G connection.
Try Jcase's LTE on/off app. It may fix your issue if it somehow went to off.
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.andirc.lteonfoff
I didn't lose connection yesterday, but my battery drained faster than it ever has since I got the phone. I chalked it up to network issues and the 4G radio searching for the signal. I didn't really use my phone at all yesterday, but at like 5:30 I noticed my phone was really hot.
The drain was ridiculous - over 50% in about 3 hours.
I do have the LTE On/Off app, but thanks for the suggestion. I've tried swapping between every different radio available on that app and no luck with anything. I can't get 4G, 3G, or 1x data connection.
Verizon is saying that they are still working on network issues in the NYC metro area. It seems completely insane that I'm the only one having this issue though. I don't know much about how cell networks operate, but is it possible that there is a network issue that is affecting me and no one else on this board? That seems extremely implausible, but maybe it's just something that I don't know enough about.
I have to live with it for today, but if it's not sorted by end of day today I think I'm due for a return.

I have a feeling it's affecting me as well... the only difference is that my phone still says I have service. The reason I think it's affecting me is the ridiculous battery drain I've been experiencing the last 2 days.
Typically, I get around 3-5% battery loss every hour... I like that rate. Yesterday and today I'm getting 15-25% battery drain ever hour and my phone is very hot
I turned off the 4G radio a few minutes ago and I'll see if that has any affect
Both of you should:
1: Pull the Battery
2: Remove the Sim Card
3: Put Battery back in
4: Boot the Phone WITHOUT the Sim Card
5: Once it boots and gives you errors, shut down the phone
6: Put SIM back in and boot normally
This allows the phone to Re-Register on the Network. See if that helps.
I had connectivity issues yesterday, but so far its been fine today (tethering).

As of 10pm PST T-Mobile started experiencing a data network outage.
Some markets were effected at different times but the Tier 3 tech support in New Mexico has been flooded with calls about no data connections with the G1 phones. According to the representative in Tier 3 tech support this is effecting all 3G equipment and there is no ETA on the repair.
Phone calls and text messages should work just fine.
If you still have no data connection in a few hours then try calling tech support (800) 937-8997.
Do NOT wipe, reflash or anything else until after you call to confirm that the problem has been resolved. Any attempt to wipe, restore to factory settings or reflash MAY end up getting stuck at the sign in part. Since there would be no data connection you may have a difficult time getting around this.
Again there is no ETA and everyone in the west coast has been effected.
Just wait it out.
Thanks.
UPDATE:
As of 7am PST my data connection was restored. Everything is working as normal.
As of 7:40 PST my phone is still not able to connect to any network.
I didn't read this thread until it was to late and already restored the phone, so I am in fact locked at start up screen, since it can't connect to my gmail account.
Hopefully it fixes itself soon.
Hey, I freaked out as well as I was stuck at the sign in screen, was unable to connect using my gmail account, powered off my phone for about an hour and just tried again and connected. Not sure what fixed it, either the power off or restoration of service by T-MO. Hope that helps.
Im from Illinois and Im experiencing the same thing, thanks for this post because I thought it was this new program I installed. I guess Ill be using wifi for now.
I'm near Chicago and I'm having the same problems at 10:14 central time.
8:38am PST
I am in southwest washington state. No joy. Will edit when mo-nets are back on line in my area.
Well I wasn't having any issues in AZ this morning until I applied a new theme and thus requiring a reboot. Lost my 3G. If you force the phone to only connect to 2G networks it works though.
Edit: Service in AZ seems to be restored.

I am here in Lenexa Ks, it is now 3:09pm I just started having troubles about 1-2 hours ago.
I called T-Mobile just a few minutes ago and they said that they are still having tons of trouble. I was about to re load everything
I'm in central California and still have data (edge). Don't know about 3G since I don't get 3G here.
ive got no cell reception atall.....no calls nada
any update on this?...still have no signal...
and its only the g1's
my gf has signal and she's got a dash
yeah was since last night for me. came back on at 8 this morning with weak edge signal. then it went out again, called a tmobile rep and she said their trying to fix it now, they've been having problems with the internet since the 12th. at first i couldnt get calls through or anything either.
Its about 5:30 here in Kansas and my 3G signal just came back a few minutes ago.
ok this is wierd....idk if it had anything to do with it
but i noticed when i lost cell phone svc i had just installed a theme
i decieded to re-install the old theme back after i did i got my signal back
Im out here in Southern California and have had no issues with 3G. I did have one customer complain about service but thats it.
No problems for me in Maine, called my kid on my G1 a bunch of times on T-Mo network. He is in Rochester, NY, using a BB. Surfed, used maps and browser, all okay. I guess I was lucky!
I got the phone on day one. The first thing I noticed as I looked at the phone as I walked out the door to my car was the 4g icon. Yay, I am on 4g! Wait, where did the icon go? It's pretty much been that way since I have had it. I keep it on Wifi at home. To put it on 4g, pretty much kills having a MOBILE smartphone. Data is the lifeblood of a smartphone and if it is not there, what's the point.
I have tried every single fix read here (and other forums). Including:
Rev A fix
Hard Reset
Pulling Battery and Sim card and placing back in
I have tried everything but take the phone back and complaining (rooted it).
Per the Verizon coverage map, I am (my house) in a 4g area. On the map, they ask for your address and it say's "I am covered" for 4g. I will note there are a few pockets on the map near my home that is 4g extended. I had been thinking it's just my area. As I would drive around, it would seem to lock onto 4g. But lately, no matter where I go, 4g goes in and out.
When the 4g goes in and out, it is killing all data. It's not like it quickly finds the 3g and resumes data transfer, it just stops. Goes to 1x after a while mostley.
So where I am at right now is that I have forced 3g (using Phone Info app) and now can get reliable mobile data.
Should I be patience with the network and wait it out or should I take this back and ***** (possibly being the device itself)? When does one suppose a possible software fix will be put out for the Thunderbolt?
Hey Man,
I read your post and I am a little confused. In summary is your issue that you dont have great 4G coverage by your house and 3G isnt picking up when 4g drops off?
If thats the case I know you said you tried the Rev A fix but just to double check did you:
Use the ##778# menu (hit call after ##778#)-->password is 000000-->modem settings-->Rev A-->choose enable-->hit the menu button on the tbolt and commit changes
Also have you had verizon try to swap out your sim card and/or called them up and made sure your current sim card is provisioned correctly? If both of these are the case and you tried all the other standard stuff I would go get the phone swapped out for another new device before your time runs out. I had the same problem and the Rev A fix did it for me.

Maybe return it and get a new TB?
I didn't have 4G in my home although Verizon's little "insert address" said I would. When I called, however, they said that I was on the border and it's a tough call for now.
When I started driving around to different areas, however, it picked up 4G signal just fine. When driving back into a 3G area it switched with no issue.

Hey, I have had problems too. I work in the Tri-county area and have GREAT 4G coverage. If you look at the 4G map I am right on the cusp (Maineville) of coverage. In my house, it will rotate between 4g/3g/1x constantly. I downloaded the "LTE OnOFF" app from TeamAndIRC and will toggle 3G only when I'm at home. For some reason I STILL HAVE TO DO THIS even though I'm using wi-fi 100%. When I get to work I toggle to 4G. Doing this, my battery life is exceptional. Before I figured it out I was draining my battery overnight every night. I don't know why the wi-fi requires that 3G only be on but it works.
Almost, but hanging on by a thread....
I am new to Verizon and I picked this up the day after launch. My two weeks are up. I am not in the 4G area (home), but spend most of my waking moment in a 4G area (work). While the phone itself doesn't have a hard time switching between networks on the handheld (I've watched it go from 3 to 4G while driving, I can almost pinpoint the switching area), it does have a hard time when in WiFi Hotspot Mode.
Here's what I mean. I'll be on wireless tether in a 4G zone and then without notice, the phone reports (via Hotspot App) that there is no mobile network ready and there is no data connection icon on the top menu bar. My Xoom is much more reliable on maintaining a connection (3G of course).
This is my only complaint about the 4G network, but it's a small one. The handheld itself is wonderful. I'm keeping both for now.
Check out my speed test on WiFi tether.
Verizon confirmed on the phone with me that there is in fact a bug in HTCs software switching from 4G to 3G when coverage drops. It should be fixed... In the mean time make sure you are using an app from the market to switch to 3G only unless you need 4G.
Other than that, just return it and wait for something else.

LOL. I live straight down 747 in Liberty Twp. (few miles up from Beckett Ridge). Driving around would get me a better connection (4g) at first but lately, as I drive around, it's all over the board. Most the time there is no data icon. I have another app (Phone Info) that has a toggle.
It gets frustrating in that I don't know if the issue is the phone, network or both. Hard to troubleshoot. I suppose I should mosey on down to the mall for anything and see what kind of 4g I get.
I am in almost the same situation as the OP, I have 4G everywhere but my home which I have confirmed with VZW is in a 4G coverage area, not an extended coverage area either. I have narrowed it down to my street exactly. Right after I turn down imy street I lose 4G.
I then once I am home and no I don't mean indoors just at my house I frequently go between nothing, 1x, and 3G(Very Weak) with sporadic data. Will not get 4G back unless I drive around. This is my second device, and second trouble ticket with VZW this time giving more detailed information.
I have also tried every possible solution but unfortunately switching to Rev. A is not a "solution" for me as I am in a 4G area and if I wanted 3G I probably would have just kept my Droid X.
I sure hope this bug if it is one in the software will be fixed with an update or VZW can sort it out if it is my network.

Per my experience yesterday, if you are within the 275 loop, you are golden. Once I hit West Chester/Beckett Ridge, LTE started dropping. At my house, it is almost non-existent.

There's going to be growing pains with their 4G network. If they decided not to expand until it was 100% operational, we'd still be stuck with 1X nationwide. I still have problems with 3G in certain areas where I lose data consistently. I am sure Verizon has tolerance levels where say 99% uptime is considered "good enough".

It's supposed to go live on the 21st in my area, and after that 30 minutes I can't wait. I usually get around 300-600 k down at my house since its down on a hole but I was getting almost 20m down and 16 up when it was working. It literally just started working again. I'm rooted, CM7, MR2 radio.
I've been experiencing data issues for past 2-3 days now. I'll put my screen on and will notice lack of data icon. I'll get it back by turning radio off/on. I'm still running on original root and radio and till now data has been a non-issue. Maybe newest VZ update made some radio changes and old radios now have issues?
If I were to stay with original rooted rom, which radio should I try? I want to jump on CM7 but people still report 4G issues.

As time goes on more and more users are finding the exact same issue. Please call Verizon and Samsung to complain about this problem. Put it on record that this issue exists. I've been through two phones dealing with it. Others are experiencing the issue as well. Verizon wont admit that there's any issues with the s3 and data connection/speed problems. If you look around here you'll find lots of people with issues just like yours. Its a problem they need to fix but unless all those who have the issue actually complain, they'll continue to see it as an anomoly.

When I brought my SECOND replacement phone into a VZ store for a new sim, one of the reps informed me that emails had been dispatched recognizing cell tower issues specifically with the s3 in my area. Maybe this issue is more widespread.
I actually experience total network disconnects at my home.

Yeah, I work about 5 blocks from my apartment, so I'm not really hopping across towers but I have had a few complete disconnects. My office doesn't offer WiFi so I don't really have an option there. And I'm pretty sure its not my phone but the network, as last week I was in Minneapolis on a business trip and had great speeds and no connection issues.
I have been going through this for months. This is not a SG3 issue, but a Verizon issue. It primarily occurs when inside of a building.
Everything worked great about 6 months ago - then some VZ expansion happened and it has never been the same. Sometimes great 4G but data doesn't work. Constant dropping to 3G. I did some testing a couple of weeks ago. Tried a Droid RAZR, HTC Rezound, GNEX, and SG3.. All had issues. Although some were able to hold on to the 4G signal a little bit better.
I'm in Jersey City by the water - outside reception is fine.
I had it the whole time throughout the storm and just lost it as of 9AM this morning. In the upper Bronx area here. Find myself constantly dropping down between 3G and 1X. Likely they are just doing repairs to the towers. Anyone else reporting any outage?

Being from Texas and hurricane survivor since 1961 you are lucky you are on Verizon and have any signal. After the hurricane FEMA commandeers bandwidth. Between this and down towers Verizon is only carrier left with anything usable. Verizon only thing working here after hurricane. All others have no signal at all or you have to keep trying till you can fall in line for quick call before getting cut off. Forget data altogether.
Hm, I'm in the South Bronx (le hood if you will) and I had complete 4G with no outage all throughout the night and through today. Maybe just something affecting the upper area.
Generally the reason service seems to get worse after a storm is because cell sites go on generator or battery when the power outage hits. It t-shirt takes hours for the juice to run out but when it does that's when you notice the problem.

My guess is some towers were taken off for repair. After playing around for a bit I'm able to get 4G on one side of my apartment but not the other (the one that has always worked for me even through the storm). Might actually be a local issue here but probably still affects a few customers in upper NYC area.

ONE of the many situations in NY city is that cell towers in areas with no power are running on gas generators and many are starting to run out of fuel.

I'm also on Staten Island, by Forest & Richmond. I've had a weak 3G signal on my S3 since yesterday. My iPhone 4S is practically unusable also. Fails on a lot of text messages, and calls can barely hold. My girlfriend said it sounds like I'm in the Battery Tunnel every time we speak. Imagine my embarrassment after mocking my parents who had no signal with their MetroPCS phones, and now I can barely receive a timely text on either of my phones.
The weather widgets on my lock screen and homescreen have pulled in data from Jersey City, Elizabeth, and Bayonne in the last few days. I think it's picking up from the strongest tower nearby at random.
My FiOS has been spotty also. I think I saw ABC7 scroll info about Verizon Communications getting hit hard during Sandy. Might take a few days before we're good again.
4G is out on a lot of Long Island too...I usually have strong 4G all the way in to work, now I'm in Manhassett and can't even get 1X (usually get ~90 dBm 4G). Couldn't send any texts yesterday at all. Hopefully they'll come back as power comes back, we still don't have traffic lights or anything.
Never lost 4g here, I'm in the middle of the bronx
Got back to work on Wednesday in Fairfield NJ and 4g was gone and 3g is spotty as hell. I'm not the only one in the building with the issue either.
At home well... I almost never get signal anyway. Still fighting verizon about that one, my droid charge had signal in my house.

That is partially true, but they have been working hard to develop a public safety specific network to prevent the need for that kind of thing. It used to be an absolute necessity, but with these public safety networks being stood up the "regular" network is far less affected by those types of uses.
