I had it the whole time throughout the storm and just lost it as of 9AM this morning. In the upper Bronx area here. Find myself constantly dropping down between 3G and 1X. Likely they are just doing repairs to the towers. Anyone else reporting any outage?

Being from Texas and hurricane survivor since 1961 you are lucky you are on Verizon and have any signal. After the hurricane FEMA commandeers bandwidth. Between this and down towers Verizon is only carrier left with anything usable. Verizon only thing working here after hurricane. All others have no signal at all or you have to keep trying till you can fall in line for quick call before getting cut off. Forget data altogether.
Hm, I'm in the South Bronx (le hood if you will) and I had complete 4G with no outage all throughout the night and through today. Maybe just something affecting the upper area.
Generally the reason service seems to get worse after a storm is because cell sites go on generator or battery when the power outage hits. It t-shirt takes hours for the juice to run out but when it does that's when you notice the problem.

My guess is some towers were taken off for repair. After playing around for a bit I'm able to get 4G on one side of my apartment but not the other (the one that has always worked for me even through the storm). Might actually be a local issue here but probably still affects a few customers in upper NYC area.
No signal on Staten Island, getting a random text every now and then but haven't successfully made or received a call in 24 hrs.

Just an update: One of my towers is still down (the main one). Still using mobile hotspot from a distance in my apartment to get 4G access.
Midtown here. 4G working fine.
ONE of the many situations in NY city is that cell towers in areas with no power are running on gas generators and many are starting to run out of fuel.

I'm also on Staten Island, by Forest & Richmond. I've had a weak 3G signal on my S3 since yesterday. My iPhone 4S is practically unusable also. Fails on a lot of text messages, and calls can barely hold. My girlfriend said it sounds like I'm in the Battery Tunnel every time we speak. Imagine my embarrassment after mocking my parents who had no signal with their MetroPCS phones, and now I can barely receive a timely text on either of my phones.
The weather widgets on my lock screen and homescreen have pulled in data from Jersey City, Elizabeth, and Bayonne in the last few days. I think it's picking up from the strongest tower nearby at random.
My FiOS has been spotty also. I think I saw ABC7 scroll info about Verizon Communications getting hit hard during Sandy. Might take a few days before we're good again.
4G is out on a lot of Long Island too...I usually have strong 4G all the way in to work, now I'm in Manhassett and can't even get 1X (usually get ~90 dBm 4G). Couldn't send any texts yesterday at all. Hopefully they'll come back as power comes back, we still don't have traffic lights or anything.
Never lost 4g here, I'm in the middle of the bronx
Got back to work on Wednesday in Fairfield NJ and 4g was gone and 3g is spotty as hell. I'm not the only one in the building with the issue either.
At home well... I almost never get signal anyway. Still fighting verizon about that one, my droid charge had signal in my house.

That is partially true, but they have been working hard to develop a public safety specific network to prevent the need for that kind of thing. It used to be an absolute necessity, but with these public safety networks being stood up the "regular" network is far less affected by those types of uses.

I got the phone on day one. The first thing I noticed as I looked at the phone as I walked out the door to my car was the 4g icon. Yay, I am on 4g! Wait, where did the icon go? It's pretty much been that way since I have had it. I keep it on Wifi at home. To put it on 4g, pretty much kills having a MOBILE smartphone. Data is the lifeblood of a smartphone and if it is not there, what's the point.
I have tried every single fix read here (and other forums). Including:
Rev A fix
Hard Reset
Pulling Battery and Sim card and placing back in
I have tried everything but take the phone back and complaining (rooted it).
Per the Verizon coverage map, I am (my house) in a 4g area. On the map, they ask for your address and it say's "I am covered" for 4g. I will note there are a few pockets on the map near my home that is 4g extended. I had been thinking it's just my area. As I would drive around, it would seem to lock onto 4g. But lately, no matter where I go, 4g goes in and out.
When the 4g goes in and out, it is killing all data. It's not like it quickly finds the 3g and resumes data transfer, it just stops. Goes to 1x after a while mostley.
So where I am at right now is that I have forced 3g (using Phone Info app) and now can get reliable mobile data.
Should I be patience with the network and wait it out or should I take this back and ***** (possibly being the device itself)? When does one suppose a possible software fix will be put out for the Thunderbolt?
Hey Man,
I read your post and I am a little confused. In summary is your issue that you dont have great 4G coverage by your house and 3G isnt picking up when 4g drops off?
If thats the case I know you said you tried the Rev A fix but just to double check did you:
Use the ##778# menu (hit call after ##778#)-->password is 000000-->modem settings-->Rev A-->choose enable-->hit the menu button on the tbolt and commit changes
Also have you had verizon try to swap out your sim card and/or called them up and made sure your current sim card is provisioned correctly? If both of these are the case and you tried all the other standard stuff I would go get the phone swapped out for another new device before your time runs out. I had the same problem and the Rev A fix did it for me.

Maybe return it and get a new TB?
I didn't have 4G in my home although Verizon's little "insert address" said I would. When I called, however, they said that I was on the border and it's a tough call for now.
When I started driving around to different areas, however, it picked up 4G signal just fine. When driving back into a 3G area it switched with no issue.

Hey, I have had problems too. I work in the Tri-county area and have GREAT 4G coverage. If you look at the 4G map I am right on the cusp (Maineville) of coverage. In my house, it will rotate between 4g/3g/1x constantly. I downloaded the "LTE OnOFF" app from TeamAndIRC and will toggle 3G only when I'm at home. For some reason I STILL HAVE TO DO THIS even though I'm using wi-fi 100%. When I get to work I toggle to 4G. Doing this, my battery life is exceptional. Before I figured it out I was draining my battery overnight every night. I don't know why the wi-fi requires that 3G only be on but it works.
Almost, but hanging on by a thread....
I am new to Verizon and I picked this up the day after launch. My two weeks are up. I am not in the 4G area (home), but spend most of my waking moment in a 4G area (work). While the phone itself doesn't have a hard time switching between networks on the handheld (I've watched it go from 3 to 4G while driving, I can almost pinpoint the switching area), it does have a hard time when in WiFi Hotspot Mode.
Here's what I mean. I'll be on wireless tether in a 4G zone and then without notice, the phone reports (via Hotspot App) that there is no mobile network ready and there is no data connection icon on the top menu bar. My Xoom is much more reliable on maintaining a connection (3G of course).
This is my only complaint about the 4G network, but it's a small one. The handheld itself is wonderful. I'm keeping both for now.
Check out my speed test on WiFi tether.
Verizon confirmed on the phone with me that there is in fact a bug in HTCs software switching from 4G to 3G when coverage drops. It should be fixed... In the mean time make sure you are using an app from the market to switch to 3G only unless you need 4G.
Other than that, just return it and wait for something else.

LOL. I live straight down 747 in Liberty Twp. (few miles up from Beckett Ridge). Driving around would get me a better connection (4g) at first but lately, as I drive around, it's all over the board. Most the time there is no data icon. I have another app (Phone Info) that has a toggle.
It gets frustrating in that I don't know if the issue is the phone, network or both. Hard to troubleshoot. I suppose I should mosey on down to the mall for anything and see what kind of 4g I get.
I am in almost the same situation as the OP, I have 4G everywhere but my home which I have confirmed with VZW is in a 4G coverage area, not an extended coverage area either. I have narrowed it down to my street exactly. Right after I turn down imy street I lose 4G.
I then once I am home and no I don't mean indoors just at my house I frequently go between nothing, 1x, and 3G(Very Weak) with sporadic data. Will not get 4G back unless I drive around. This is my second device, and second trouble ticket with VZW this time giving more detailed information.
I have also tried every possible solution but unfortunately switching to Rev. A is not a "solution" for me as I am in a 4G area and if I wanted 3G I probably would have just kept my Droid X.
I sure hope this bug if it is one in the software will be fixed with an update or VZW can sort it out if it is my network.

Update:
Per my experience yesterday, if you are within the 275 loop, you are golden. Once I hit West Chester/Beckett Ridge, LTE started dropping. At my house, it is almost non-existent.
Anyone else in the NYC area having data issues? My data connection went down around midday today and hasn't returned. I called Verizon and they said that several towers were down in the area, but a friend with a Droid Incredible had a solid 3G connection this evening. I'm wondering if this is an issue with my phone or if it's the network.

I live in Central Jersey too and was having problems during the day. My phone seems fine now though.
In the event that I'm not the only person in all of NYC having issues, I'll post a quick follow up before calling it an evening. I've tried flashing back to stock, flashing a new kernel, toggling the radio off and on, multiple battery pulls, basically anything I could think of and nothing has worked. I called Verizon again and they said they still have towers out in the NYC metro area. I was encouraged to wait until tomorrow to see if data returns.
Here's hoping that I will wake up to a solid 4G connection.
Try Jcase's LTE on/off app. It may fix your issue if it somehow went to off.
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.andirc.lteonfoff
I didn't lose connection yesterday, but my battery drained faster than it ever has since I got the phone. I chalked it up to network issues and the 4G radio searching for the signal. I didn't really use my phone at all yesterday, but at like 5:30 I noticed my phone was really hot.
The drain was ridiculous - over 50% in about 3 hours.
I do have the LTE On/Off app, but thanks for the suggestion. I've tried swapping between every different radio available on that app and no luck with anything. I can't get 4G, 3G, or 1x data connection.
Verizon is saying that they are still working on network issues in the NYC metro area. It seems completely insane that I'm the only one having this issue though. I don't know much about how cell networks operate, but is it possible that there is a network issue that is affecting me and no one else on this board? That seems extremely implausible, but maybe it's just something that I don't know enough about.
I have to live with it for today, but if it's not sorted by end of day today I think I'm due for a return.

I have a feeling it's affecting me as well... the only difference is that my phone still says I have service. The reason I think it's affecting me is the ridiculous battery drain I've been experiencing the last 2 days.
Typically, I get around 3-5% battery loss every hour... I like that rate. Yesterday and today I'm getting 15-25% battery drain ever hour and my phone is very hot
I turned off the 4G radio a few minutes ago and I'll see if that has any affect
Both of you should:
1: Pull the Battery
2: Remove the Sim Card
3: Put Battery back in
4: Boot the Phone WITHOUT the Sim Card
5: Once it boots and gives you errors, shut down the phone
6: Put SIM back in and boot normally
This allows the phone to Re-Register on the Network. See if that helps.

Just looking to see what anyone from my area is pulling in signal wise. Not 3G but call signal. In my driveway im pulling in 0-2 bars, same with inside my house. When I was on Sprint my call bars were always full but my data constantly sucked. Now with Verizon my data is constantly awesome but my call quality/signal strength sucks to the point of static on some calls and text messages not being delivered/recieved.
Ive taken my phone into the local store and the sales rep there let me use his phone briefly to take past my house/driveway so I could see if this was an issue on his as well and sure enough, his Tbolt had 1 bar. So I called a tech and was on the phone with him for almost an hour doing checks on things etc,and found my phone was hovering between -91 and -101dBm which is rather bad lol. So Verizon extended my 14 day period alittle longer until a truck roams thru my neighborhood to test the signal. This is kinda bothering me since my area is one of the many slated to get 4G on June 16th
No idea where this is, but in Kenosha I have almost no signal unless I'm downtown by the Metra stop

Pretty much all the way up Appleton ave starting at Pilgrim up to the Marcus Cinema by Target (just short of Hwy Q) it hovers between 2 and 1.
Thing is, I have had a few techs tell me that the data signal and call signal are not the same thing. My data speeds are fine,ALOT better then Sprint, but its my calling signal thats off. I finally had the results of my ticket told to me today. Seems my area is going to not be an easy fix. There is an issue and supposedly the network team is on it, but something to do with living between 2 towers my phone is struggling to pick a dominate tower so its trying to pick one (or something like that, I was half asleep when he called back lol)
I wonder. When people were having issues with Sprint they would sometimes send them an Airwave unit to boost the signal in their homes for free. I wonder if Verizon would do the same since there IS a problem in my area. Off to research I go..Thanks everyone

Thank ya!!! I just got off the phone with tech support again and its noted on my account that they recommend a Network Extender but the best the rep will do is take off 50% of the cost of it. While its a decent offer, im still on the fence about it since I have to purchase it to be able to get a decent signal
You should get it for free, if it's their issue....

Indeed, that was exactly my thinking. Sprint was tossing people Airwaves left and right for free if they had issues, guess everyone telling me that Verizon will "nickle and dime" me for everything has some merit. Too bad my trial period ended last night (it was extended until the results of my ticket were in).

? Since your phone flops from tower to tower all day with travel, I don't see how your phone can be set to just one. The towers are usually setup not to overlap and the phone should be able to determine the best signal out of the two. The only thing I could think they did was block you from the weaker tower in your area or raise priority on the stronger one in some way

Also All towers overlap to another, always. The amount of overlap variable. If there was no overlap, your phone would drop every call when switching between towers. Flopping from tower to tower applies when one is traveling, there is an entire world of stationary out there, such as people's desk or home.

My company gives discounts for people on AT&T, and if this keeps up it might be time for a change...........I hate the idea of having tiered data but what's the point of having unlimited usage that I CAN'T USE?

It will show I have full bars and my phone will crawl. Called Sprint and they said there is a "outage" in my area and that they were working on it.
My company gives discounts for people on AT&T, and if this keeps up it might be time for a change...........I hate the idea of having tiered data but what's the point of having unlimited usage that I CAN'T USE?

If you switch, take a look at TMo. They are great here and their pricing/data plans are good.
ATT speeds are good here too, I have them but am grand fathered into unlimited data. Don't know if I'd recommend them to a new customer.

Yeah I'm in NY as well and have been facing atrocious signal issues. Manhattan works fine including some parts of Queens, but once I head out into Long Island, forget about it, I see my bars drop to one, to none, and sometimes 1x.
Sprint is pushing out the update, just confirmed the release date to be the 25th. Hopefully, this will solve the signal issue that so many of us wishes to be finally resolved.

North NJ here and my signal is horrible..... sprint 3g is the worst...i had Verizon b4 i came over to sprint 2 months ago and boy do i regret it...
Same here in Stockton, CA. Been getting weak signal and when I use data it actually looks like my signal drops a bit.
I average speeds of .5 megs. Which is just terrible compared to other carriers.
BTW dont use the speedtest app from the market. Its borked, use a test through the web browser.

thanks....but the problem is T-Mobile is going to get gobbled up by AT&T soon so I'd lose that battle either way......
i also hate AT&T because they are against net neutrality (last time I checked), but that's a whole different subject
Not for me Been getting around 2mbps like forever besides outages from towers Going down

I agree... I live in Clifton, NJ and work in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. At work, I no longer get reception at all unless I'm roaming, when last year I had full signal.
At home, I had to get an Airave because I never have more than half my bars, this also used to be full.
i'm not getting reception at all right now and i normally have full bars inside my house.
On top of that when i do get reception, the white bars never turn green so i can't even call my voicemail WTF
Same for me in san. Diego CA. I hope they get this fixed soon. If not they better refund us the amount of money we paid for they're "premium data plan" that we can't even use.

To add to it,
In CT I'm in an area with "Good/Fair" coverage, or whatever. I hardly get enough of a data connection at home to load the facebook app.
The past few days, however, I've seen my phone on 1X a lot, and even no service at all for extended periods. But I'm wondering if it's from Sprint or from the latest nightly I just flashed. >_>
