Your Fav Task Manager?

There are 2 top task managing apps rite now
Task Killer by ReChild
and
TasKiller free by Thibaut Nicolas.
wanted to know which one u guys prefer.
i liked the Task Killer by ReChild....as it is easier to use..and more intuitive.

Not everyone will subscribe to what I'm about to say (type!) but.. I've stopped using task managers altogether now and I'm finding that the phone runs smoother and better without them... and it's using less battery too.

do some task managers cause programs to crash or stop working randomly?
my handcent and messaging were crashing

I have task killer by ReChild aswell and no just go into the app and ignore the ones you dont to be killed.

Try System Panel (beta) it works well really well - search for it on the market.

I have tried Advanced Task Killer and for me the best is Task Manager, the one that has green droid on the icon and red circle with X inside it Altough, as time goes my RAM goes from 140 Mb to 80 or less, Im guessing that Timescape eats the memory as it updates because he is on my ignore list with few other programs.

Advance Task Manager is the best for my opinion...because my phone has 178 ram free now and has auto shutdown application and its more faster..

I'm with you, every task manager ive tried either uses more battery than it saves or kills things that you really dont want it to.
If i need to kill something I now use the force stop option under applications in the settings. Astro also has a nice process manager that shows cpu usage and allows you to kill off individual processes.

What is on your ignore list ? I have Nimbuzz, Messages, Timescape, Weather and Facebook and on fresh start I have 150 Mb but with time it gets to 80 Mb...there is no way that you can have 178 Mb whole day and that some services are working in background. Or am I doing something wrong ?

why are you worried about how much free ram you have? Have you ever actually experienced a situation where an app complained about not having enough memory?
Why not just let android worry about using the free memory in the best way it can. If an App needs more memory Android can always dump some of the stuff that is not important anyway.

Try to use Advance Task Manager and tell me then how much free memory you have...

TaskOS was really awesome, then there was this update and now it sucks

Task Managers are only needed by pseudo multitasking phones/OS's such as Windows.
Linux/Android take care of their own memory management and so do not need task killers, in fact on Android they do more harm than good as they kill processes that you really do want to be running or at least resident in memory. It will slow your phone down and drain power if Android needs to keep restarting it's monitoring processes (eg. battery monitor, clock, alarm etc...) because the user keeps killing it with a task manager.
Also, just because an application is resident in the kernel does not mean it is being used, using any resources, stealing any resources or memory from anything else. If a new application start and Android needs the memory, it will take it !

^ Yeah, I stopped using a task manager a few weeks ago, and think my battery life has actually improved since doing so.

yep.... Astro is cool.... and now the phone is much smoother and battery life has improved....

I have been using advanced task killer, but will look into some of the alternatives suggested here.
Even if a task manager doesn't improve performance, I can't do without one. I just gotta know what is running in the background.
P.S. Why is this forum such a PIA for new users?

I think the main point is people are trying to work out ways of increasing their battery life.

well i use advanced task killer by rechild, i decided to leave it closed all day today and let tye os do its thing. while i agree android can easily allocate the ram, in just 5 hours without task kill my battery drained to 68%, normally itd be around 88%ish. so my vote goes to task kill for better batt life...

Advance task killer problem

I'm using advance task killer, when I kill everything when I start up I get about 200mb of ram... But after a while I see some programs I don't use but it show up in ATK... Like google maps, moixer mail... I didn't use any of them, y is it on n draining my ram??

It is not ATK problem, it is Android problem, you can root your fone in order to uninstall unexpecting program.

is it worth it to have the task killer???

Hi, And welcome to android!
This is not at all a problem. Android just starts everything and keeps it in 'cache' form . They are not at all draining your RAM as the system manages which program will get how much RAM. Just stop using task Killers and your phone will rum a lot smoother..

Huh, isn't task killer suppose to help save ram?? Cause after all these programs auto running I get about 30mb of ram left according to task killer...

Hi..the point real united was making is that you don't need to ' save' ram on android. Android manages the memory itself so will remove things which are cached in order to create any memory it needs.

Welcome to the linux world.
Free RAM = wasted RAM
What's the point of having free/unused RAM?
Android will load in memory the apps you use so, when you start one, it will be already in memory so, it only take a sec. for you to start use it.
Android will close the less used apps to free RAM when you use an application.
By killing the apps you won't solve anything because:
1. they will be turned on again by the system => more battery used.
2. when you use them, they will have to be loaded in memory: more processing => more battery used.
Just use the task killer to kill an app when you really have to do it.

My answer will be "No". I had the task killer in a very long time, but after unistalling it my mobile has better battery & performs better.

I have used Task Killer too when i have my X10 new but i realized that Task Killer dont make it better only more worse and since then i dont have used a Task Killer no more and my X10 is better than ever the Battery Life is good and its smooth and dont lags. Only use Task Killer when a Programm makes your Phone lag and dont close itself and stucks in the Background or you can reboot your Phone.

I disagree with some of the comments here. Advance Task Killer has helped me improve the battery life of my phone. The issue is to selectively kill apps that are running on the background for no apparent reason. For example, how many people use Moxier? If you don't use it, it should not be mucking around in the background using processor power.
After using ATK, my phone no longer re-starts from time to time. It used to do that when it ran out of RAM.

Normally, people are using Windows and get used to think that the system need free ram when they run new program and in order to keep their system runninh smoothly. So they think the same way when using any other operating system, that's included me.
And after reading all post in this thread, I'm starting to get confused: It is good with or without the task manager? Well, I uninstalled it for now to see if it's better than before or what. But firstly, I feel not comfortable seeing some programs that I don't like are running without doing anything to stop it! I think I might need the task manager in some cases like now.

There is no way your phone will reboot itself due to insufficient RAM.. Android manages it very nicely and if you notice your RAM will never go down below 30 MB no matter how many apps you are running in the background. I am currently running 37 applications without rebooting my phone. So that is/was not the reason for your phone rebooting itself. It might have caused due to some poorly coded apps and killing it might have solved the problem.
Now do not use task manager/killer. Android does that pretty nicely. And idle/cached apps take very little and almost negligible processing power.

To task killer or not

I have read some good number of articles about using or not using a task killer on android phones, I am leaning at the moment to not having one (as i have not installed one and i have had my phone. For about a week or two now). I am extremely interested in hearing some opinions flrom my fellow xda members.

What's your point to start a new one?

You only need it in emergencies. At first I used it often and decided I was just paranoid and uninstalled it. Device then worked more smoothly then when I was using it. You may get a little nervous about it saying that it only has 70M left, but that's not really true. Most of the apps that you exit out of don't get used by the CPU anymore and just sit in memory (not doing anything). When you launch another app, that applications gets moved out of memory and the new one gets active.
If you install a lot of 3 star apps (crappy apps) and notice that your battery is going low fast or phone getting hot, then use it as it is an emergency. Just try not to make it a habit.

Do not use a task killer unless an app is frozen! It only slows down your phone and causes bugs. Your apps have to reopen every time you want to use it, which only slows things down. It's also possible for apps to lose data because they get stopped prematurely.
Besides, freeing up ram won't make your phone go faster. If the ram isn't being used, then it's doing nothing at all. A phone with 500MB free would be just as fast as a phone with 20MB free.

I used advanced task killer for a while but uninstalled it because i couldnt come up with a set of tasks that i would always want killed.
Plus the purist in me doesnt like the idea of automatically terminating a thread without some kind of collaboration between the threads involved. How does task killer know that any given thread is at a good stopping point?
It seems that background tasks were not nearly as big a drain on battr life as having gps on all the time. Once I installed the power widget on my home screen toggling gps took care of that.

Task killers are the devil. Don't use them. They haven't been needed since Android 2.0
If you need to kill an app, use the Task Manger that comes with the Tab.

Quick question...because I'm confused and curious as well about Task Killers...why would devs and users alike think Task Killers are so bad if GB 2.3 includes an enhanced Task Killer for managing apps, seeing which apps take up memory, and kill battery life? The SGT including one as well. What gives?
All of the things listed above seem like a good reason to me, right? Again, I just want to understand that's all.

Some Task Killers (TK) are quite extensive in that they willl allow you to close down all manner of objects, Apps, etc. It is these TK's that are risky or should be treated with care.
However, the one provided on the Tab and alike are designed to only show running Apps and services that it feels you can stop if you so wish without causing any effect to the Tab's running.
I use both the built in TK and a third-party named SystemPanel.
If you look at both you will see that although the built in TK does it's job it is nowhere near as fierce as SystemPanel.
Again, provided you know what you are doing TK's such as SystemPanel can be of benefit. I use mine for a great number of tasks including obtaining detailed information of any App or object running to see how much of the processor it has been using, or Archiving any App prior to upgrading the App (just in case the updated App has issues I can then easily use the archive).

That's too funny...System Panel is the one I've been using for a while now. I like how it will give you MANY details about system apps as well as a ton of others information, makes me feel better!

The only time you need a task manager is if you have a rogue app that won't exit and which is taking up the CPU. The SGT seems to be pretty good at killing such apps but I've had a couple of old programs with problems. (They have the same issue on my N1, so not surprising).
I've got OSMonitor installed anyway so I can check things, I just use that when I need to kill a "stuck" app, or if I really aren't too fussed I just reboot with QuickBoot.

well i use the tab a lot and when browsing any site with flash and graphics the avail memory drops to 40mb or less then thats when its gonna crash especially if you get a call at the same time.. i use advance task killer froyo just to free up memory here and there but since froyo the task killers can't really force close the tasks thats why the stock manager works well but doesn't show what background services are taking up memory and thats a major problem im still looking for a good task killer that will show and kill but not take up a large footprint in the memory , a program that seems to work well with my ATK is Fast Reboot its restarts all the apps running and frees up memory greatly helps a lot , for some reason the pro version disappeared that allows you to exlude certain tasks from restarting on click.
I really don't think if you use the tab a lot and as a phone you can't live without a one click task killer, don't really trust android os managing my ram, as well noticed when something such as yahoo mail eats up ram and cpu, it doesn't get closed automatically by android , big alternative i've noticed was uninstall it and use the stock email app and works so much better on memory and cpu.

i use the tab lots, as a phone too. I survive great without a task killer. I trust android to manage my free memory. I don't trust all apps to respect the os tho.

Which Is the Best Task Killer?

What has been the best task killer for anybody. Im posting this threads cause myself have been wondering, which of all of them in the market is the best 1 for a phone. As for me i have a mytouch slide, Not rooted 2.1update1. I have been using Advance task Killer Pro, n has been wrking fine. But for some reason now my battery has been draining. So can u all plz let me know another good task killers out there. Yes ive heard is bad by killing apps, but i jst dont never understood why. So let me know what you all use thank u, n appreciate it.

I like system panel it gives a lot more info about what apps are missing behaving. Watchdog is real useful also.

Task killers are a bad idea, because as soon as you kill them, Android starts loading them back into memory, which wastes battery.
There's a whole bunch of levels of memory usage for apps, and task killers generally group them all together. Most of those apps being "killed" aren't actually loaded - they're cached, memory that can be dropped at a moment's notice when something else needs it. And the cached apps will start right away, since they're already in memory.
With a task killer removing those from memory, now there's lag because it has to be re-loaded, plus general lag from Android re-caching some of them.

He's not asking you if he should get a task killer he's asking for some names of task killers
Best and simplest is advanced task killer or ATK

I Use Adv. Task Killer, Also I Never Really Have A Issue With The Battery, But If You Notice Sometimes, After Killing A App, It Comes Right Back.... At That Point, If You Have The Adv. Task Killer Version I'm Using (V1.0.0 Build1) You Will Also Have A Service Button, Where You Can Go To The App That Keeps Restarting, & Touch It To Force It Closed, After That Your Battery Life Should Be Great!!

But it still boots up though even if you force close it. I'm assuming at that point you are wasting battery trying to close it several times.

And this is why I had my previous post. torvick12 said he never understood why it's bad to kill apps, so I gave him a reason - and here's another person saying basically the same thing, just, without the why Android does what it does.

It Boots Back Up Sometimes, But Instead Of Long-Pressing On Whichever App It Is Restarting, Press The Service Button (In Adv.Task Killer App) That Should Shut It Down Once (Twice The Most) For Good!!

i prefer autokiller. if root then the preset work like charm. if not then need manual killing the task at process tab.

I Used Autokiller
I Also Have Autokiller Installed, But More Or Less Only Use The Presets, Mainly Cause I'm Not Sure What The Settings Are Spose Tah Get Set Too.

They aren't "running". They are loaded in memory for quick access to them. If something else needs that memory, the os will unload something from memory itself.

task killer pro is what i use to use back on ver 2.1 and 2.0.1 but if you ever get onto froyo or Gingerbread it's best not to even use a task killer at all.

If you're really interested, you can read lengthy technical writeups on how Android manages its apps.
If not, then you need to accept the fact that those apps are cached in memory and are not actively processing or using battery and there is no reason to kill them (unless they are acting up, in which case, I believe Eclair, but at least Froyo, and up have a built in task killing feature). That memory will be cleared when another app takes priority.
Think about this: your automated task killer is showing you only have 5% free memory! You kill those apps and you now have 95% free. WHAT GOOD IS THAT MEMORY IF IT'S NOT BEING USED ANYWAY? I reiterate, the memory would have been cleared regardless when another app took priority.
