[Q] High latency on wifi. - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All of a sudden for some reason my wifi seemed slow. so i went to i.dslr.net/iphone_speedtest.html to do a speed test, its the only one i know of that shows ping times. Up until today they have always been between 30ms-40ms. Today its consistently in the 1000ms range. Now 2 days ago I did the Chevronwp7.updater to get NoDo. Thats the only change I've done, and even after I did it, my wifi was still fine. Now I tested my HTC Inspire, iPhone 4, and a Droid 2 on the same site, and all of their ping times are within range.
I know its not due to the nodo update seeing that it was over 48 hours ago, and was fine up until earlier today. I'm just worried about sending it in to ATT and them noticing the different os version on the phone.

that won't get rid of the os version would it, i thought the chevronwp7.update couldn't be rolled back.

i did a restore, and still have the same problem. i'm probably gonna have to wait till att pushes the nodo update before i can send it in, which at this pace will probably be sometime next year.

well i tried 5 different wifi connections and still have the same problem, browsing on 3g is faster than wifi. I need some advice, if you were in my shoes would you call att to get the phone swapped out? Remember that I flashed the nodo update via the chevronwp7.updater. I don't think its from the update cause wifi was fine after that for a day or two.

can anyone do me a favor and go this page.
http://i.dslr.net/iphone_speedtest.html
on wifi, can you run a speed test and tell me what kind of ping times you get.
thank you.

I've had this problem with my Omnia 7 from day one. Just run the speedtest on that site and I'm getting pings of between 982ms and 1047ms.
I've finally installed the 7392 (+7390) update via Zune, it included a firmware update from Samsung that updated the radio software but performance is still worse than useless.

I ran the test that website on my Lg Optimus 7 and I got a lot of latency readings, it starts up on 1617ms and ends on 175ms. The speed says 3866kbps which seems accurate according to another test site.

Some weird sh1t with my G2X

This weekend I rolled back my G2X to the original 2.2.2 out of the box state. I did this because I had applied the leaked Gingerbread and I didn't like the way the camera was functioning and wanted to take photos while enjoying the long weekend.
Since rolling back I have had NO issues whatsoever with the phone. My battery life has been fine, not one freeze up or reboot issue. and I am getting better reception in places it would suck with the leaked gingerbread.
Not sure what happened but it has been over 72 hours and not one problem. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't get it...
what don't you get? why the official rom is working better than the leak?
in any case don't jump the gun 72 hours hardly enough time to be sure you wont have any issues.
What I don't get is, I had all of those issues prior to installing the leak. And I waited 2 weeks before installing it.
I'll check back in in a few days and let you know if it is acting up. So far so good tho.
That's why I'm still on 2.2 roms. I'm too picky and know gingerbread will piss me off with the GPS being slow and all the other miscellaneous issues. Waiting for official GB before I hop on the CM band wagon.

You know, one of the first things I do...after a battery charge, is do a factory reset.....why that seems to work for me, I have no idea.
My daughter has a G2...lots of problems...factory reset.....Daddy youre a genuis.
My son has a sensation...after a week, problems...done a factory reset yet? Nope...try it....Dam dad, you know your ****.
Who knew??
I'm sure not all problems are solved with factory resets...but at least you start off clean. Afterall, loading ROMs on devices is a product line thing...who knows what could go wrong...or not finish or ...whatever.
I'm noticing a new GPS problem with my rooted 2.2.2.
Even when I'm outside, I cannot get an accurate lock on my location with my GPS. I'm getting 1,500-1,700 meter estimations. This is unacceptable.
Anyone having this problem, or anyone know of a fix?
For GPS try this....worked for me
Dial 1809#*999*
Find GPS Test
System Settings
Sulp settings
SLP Server Settings
Bring up menu and ADD
name: Google
SLP Address: sulp.google.com
port:7275
cert: leave blank
TLS: don't check
Save
Then reboot and see if that gets you a better and quicker lock.
You can also try the Nokia SLP, everything is the same, just swap out google for nokia.
My locks went from non-existant to 15-20 seconds. Still not perfect, but at least it will work.

Tab 7+ Incredibly Slow Wifi Downloads

Hi, just got the 7+ for and early Christmas present and love it... except for one issue.
Downloads take far, far too long, and I while I've checked everything I know to check, I'm hoping someone here might know something else to do.
I can log into the market and Amazon, but a simple 3.5mb download will take upwards of 10-15 minutes to download. I have wireless n, and my rooted (from last year) Nook Color will download the same file on the same wireless network in seconds.
I did do the firmware update (literally 4+ hours! to download-I didn't know about Kies yet) and it seemed to increase the wifi speed somewhat, but not enough.
Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated!
My WiFi speed is 16Mbps down/4Mbps up with speedtest app. So might be the problem of your network connection to Amazon, not the problem of device.
I get spotty wifi at work. Doesn't seem to like our access points, but at home it's perfect.

I still think it might be my 7+ I downloaded speed test, and did the test on my 7+, my Nook Color with an old rom, and a Nook Color I'm rooting for an Xmas present with a newer rom.
Samsung: 0.183/download 2.786/upload
Old Nook: 9.876/download 2.832/upload
New Nook: 12.002/download 2.781/upload
This is all on the same exact network, at the same distance.

Try restart the router?
Changing channels on the router may help too. Wifi analyzer may help you out.

Brand/model of router?
Opened my Tab 7+ Saturday night. After setup, it wanted to download updates for 5 different apps and software update (147mb). Was painfully slow. Left it downloading and went to bed. In the morning, it was finished with them all.
Re-booted and tried again. Market was terrible. Finally got the Speedtest.net. Ran the test and got 3547 kbps upload and 24 kbps download. Downloaded the same app on my droid x and gt 3647 kbps upload and 9734 kbps download.
Have a Linksys WRT300N V1.1. Rebooted it. No change.
Did a factory reset on the Tab. No change.
Called Samsung and was told this issue was being sent up to level 2 and someone will call me back. I asked when and was told 3 to 5 business days!?!?
Back to Fry's. They were awesome. Took it back and gave me a full refund.
The WRT300N might have had a firmware update since you purchased it, which would lead to issues with download speeds. I have a 160N where my Tab ran slow on WiFi but fast on other devices, once I updated the firmware everything worked well. The issue isn't always the device.

The guy at Fry's had the same problem on their wifi connection. Got to believe it is not my wifi. FWIW I updated the firmware beginning of the year.
My wifi is great in the room with the router. In the next room....not so much. Changing channels on the router did help some though.

Sure. 5 laptops (3 different brands) and 2 Droid phones (Droid X and Droid Incredible) having no problem. Must be the router. As I am going to pick-up a new 7 Plus tonight, I will ask which router they are using. Any bets?

And how old are the laptops? The Droid X and Incredible have a good year on them, meaning the WiFi Chip in them is most likely at least 1.5 years old. You forget that each WiFi device uses a different chip that IS older.
An example for you, I run an IT department, my boss just got a new iMac 21.5 inch. With this new computer, he is randomly losing all internet connection. My thought was that clearly there was a bad network adapter, so we took the computer back, and got a new one, same issue, clearly ruling out the network adapter. Then I looked for software problems, VMware fusion seemed to be the culprit, we didn't lose network connectivity with it not started. So we switched him to Parallels. Parallels resolved the issue temporarily. It came back.
Finally I plugged in a different router, a backup one I have just in case something goes wrong. Everything worked perfectly. The issue wasn't exactly the router 100% but a driver incompatibility with the unit that would kick itself off when the computer woke from sleep. Just because 8-20 devices work perfectly on a router doesn't mean a new one will also.
Well, as it turns out you folks are right. Got my new Tab home and had the exact same problems. After 30 minutes downloading the speedtest app, got the same readings as the last tab. Noticed another wifi connection available in my list. No security activated. Gave it a try. Ran the test again and got 100 times the download speed.
Going router looking Saturday morning. Any advice on what I should look for?
HD TV with smart tv
the 5 mentioned laptops (btw two of the laptops were Christmas presents this year)
two desktop computers (one wifi connected and one wired)
and my tab.

Since you have so many different devices. I would strongly recommend a dual-band router. The reason being single band routers only broadcast using one frequency usually 2.4Ghz or 5.0Ghz but dual band routers can do both simultaneously. This should ensure compatibility with all of your devices. Here are a link from newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...10076 600107140&IsNodeId=1&name=Up to 600Mbps
Well, gotta say thanks, and admit that you guys were right... it was our router too...
We did exchange my 7+, and bought a second one for the hubby, but were still having the slow downloads.
I checked the thread, (my notifications stopped for some reason) and saw the comments about a dual band router. Since our router was close to three years old, the hubby bought a Linksys e4200, and what a difference!
7+'s are now zipping along, loading pages immediately, downloading in seconds, and his laptop is also doing the same
Thanks guys, you're awesome!
Got this one at Frys today. What a difference. Download speed went from 37 kbps to 15159 kbps.
http://www.netgear.com/home/products/hometheater/networking-for-home-theater-and-gaming/WNDR37AV.aspx
Thanks guys
With the new router, my download speed went from 183 kbps to 9334 kbps!
I expect it'll be even better when we're not streaming Netflix and downloading audiobooks for the hubby at the same time
Found the Fix
Hey everyone,
I also recently bought the 7+ and my connection was incredibly slow as well. I believe I have actually found the culprit, at least on my router. Using an app called Network Tester I found out that I was getting extremely high pings to just my router, while my internet connection (when it got through) was speedy. After spending a few hours on my router's settings (Netgear WNDR3800), I stumbled upon a setting called RIP under LAN Setup. I read about it on Wikipedia and decided to enable it and give it a try, couldn't hurt right? Well after switching it to enabled using version 2_M, the 7+ works like it should!

3G/HSPA Connectivity Issue

Hi,
My One S seems to occasionally have a few connectivity issues with 3G, I am not sure they are related to the signal issues already discussed in other threads in this forum. I have an international handset, MAO black version (has two tiny chips too, but not worth complaining about), running stock firmware, haven't done the dev unlock yet.
1) Sometimes the phone shows 'No Service', but I still have a working data connection and can make calls. Sending/receiving SMS appears not to work for some reason though. Can work around by switching into and out of airplane mode. Until I do that any SMS I compose under these conditions just pends, after the workaround they do get sent after a few minutes.
2) Sometimes something seems to go wrong with the 3G data connection, all the internet apps suddenly say they have no connection, alogcat says that DNS lookup is repeatedly failing even though I have a strong signal and 3G/HSPA connection (also tried connecting to IP addresses directly, doesn't work either). Tried getting online via Wi-Fi and it works, but all the Internet connectivity fails if I turn Wi-Fi off. If I reboot the phone it is able to get online again.
I brought this problem up in a live chat with HTC customer support and they have advised me to arrange for them to collect the phone for repair, the shop from whom I bought the phone advised the same. Just thought I would share it here and find out if it is common, or it is likely, as HTC think, there's something wrong with my phone's antennae. (My thought is that both could also be software problems)
Anyone else experience problems like this?
I get the no service thing all the time, I pull it out of my pocket and press the power button, it says no service. I am going to call t-mobile in the next few days, I am trying to collect more data. It does it on my same spot on the couch where I used to get good coverage on my old phone. It does it on the same desk at work that I used to get good reception at. It kinda sucks.

Yup, I get that and trying to get more data before sending it back to HTC. I'm not really certain but it's as if there is something wrong antennae? Seems to be quite a few with similar mobile network issues though.
I still have my old Motorola and with sim out of One S in the reception is good where the One S struggles to get a signal - if at all
I have the same issue as Kenyw:
No connection for a while although within covered area.
Strong connection bars but no internet
Usually I switch to airplane mode and back then it works...until the next time!
Very frustrating! I don't think changing the phone would solve the problem!
I have the same exact issue as the OP. Another example would be the streaming of music using Pandora and Slacker. I can listen to 1 song and skip 2 or 3 songs at best before I start having issues where it just keeps loading and I am in 4G range and 3G which shouldn't be a problem still.
Same issue here.

It's a bit of a queer issue. I know where I live I have a good Three UK signal as per experience with the Motorola phone. I can be anywhere between 2 bars (approx 104dBm) and no signal in the house and around the yard. Yet I can walk 20 yards towards mast approx 1 mile away and as soon as I get LOS (no buildings, trees) on the mast I get full signal???
I buy my One-S a week ago in Germany and facing the same issue in Israel with Orange 3.5G network. I really don't know what to do now.

Alon,
As mentioned in many different threads opened here in XDA, the issue is related to the phone and its current software version and not to the operator/SIM/area in the world.
Stay tuned and hopefully shortly HTC will provide OTA update or root your device and install one of the custom ROMs based on the new RUU 1.70 which might be solving this issue.
Oren
Thanks,
I will keep waching the threads around waiting for solution.

Will not download anything on mobile data

I have had the Galaxy S 3 for almost 2 weeks now, and I noticed it will not download anything over my mobile data. Wifi works like a charm, but at work, I need credentials to use the wifi, so I just dont bother with it. I was going to install an app off of the play store and it would not go. It said downloading and the bar was constantly moving, but no numbers telling how far done. It sat like that for 10 mins and nothing happened. This has happened before to me when trying to download pics off of the internet. Live browsing works fine though. Facebook app works great, google chrome browser works unless you try to download.
I am unsure if this is a setting thing, or verizon blocking downloading off of mobile data or what? The app was under 2Mb so it wasn't a big one at all. I have my mobile data on (4G), power saving off, airplane and driving mode off, and sync on. For sync on my main account I only have gmail and internet set to sync though... I dont want all the other BS syncing its just annoying.
If someone could shed some light on this topic because I am so confused as to what is going on.
Is this a re-occuring problem or was it the one time in the play store/picture download? I know sometimes when you download or update from the play store, it gets stuck. You just have to cancel it and restart it. As for the picture download, it may have just been the hosting website.

If I remember this is not the first time. I believe I was in a hurry trying to download an app and it wouldn't go so i just quit it and gave up. I have tried a couple different apps and tried one about 5 times after resetting the phone and trying different settings and nothing I could do would get it to work.
I have nearly the same issue, except, speeds are just exceptionally slow. I get tons of "network not available" type errors. 22+ hours on the phone with Verizon tech support, 4 SIM cards and 6 total hours on the phone with Samsung and all they can tell me is it's "either the network or the phone!?" They told me my phone was DOA and swapped it out. My new phone suffers the same problems, slightly worse. Verizon won't admit the phone could have a flaw directly to me but others on this website say their reps have told them the issue is well known and they are looking into it. The issues seems to be; Long latency, dropping signal with no indication, slow network speeds over 3g/4g as compared to other devices on the same network, at the same time (not always the case though..), long periods when text messages come in, dropped calls, etc.
VZW is supposedly checking into my local network now. I'm supposed to be updated on their status, but I know what they're going to say.. "Network's fine!"
The only thing left is the device. Others, including yourself seem to be having similar issues. There's alot of talk about "Samsungs radios suck" or "You should have known buying a samsung that it's radio could maybe not work that great.." I dunno.
Seems to me a radio should be kinda a priority in a mobile device. My apologies for not being born with the innate knowledge of samsungs less than stellar radios.
Some are hopeful for an update. That update apparently never came to the Nexus. I don't think it's reasonable to expect it here either.
I flashed the Synergy Rom and it seems to have helped immensely. It's not as reliable or consistent as the ole X2 over the same network but then again, it is a Samsung, I guess.

Well thanks for bringing that to my attention and letting me know I am not the only one with this issue. I just wasn't sure if it was known as a problem or a setting I had turned off or something stupid like that. Because I know there are ways to disable mobile data so it doesn't suck it all away.
Doesn't seem like a radio issue in my case, as everything works fine, its just when downloading from mobile it doesn't work. Regular browsing is fine and so is internet use in apps, its just the downloads. Wasn't sure if it was a verizon policy to lockout downloads, as this is my first smartphone, or if it was a phone issue itself.
I am not going to use ROMs on my phone, or anything like that. Ill just put up with it until there is a possible fix. Its not too big of a deal, it just helps when you need something and theres no wifi around.

[Q] Nexus 5 Wifi ping/speed problems

For reasons unknown to me, as of about 2 hours ago, my nexus 5 has caused my internet ping to jump from 60 ms to ~2000 ms and the download speed to go from 3.00 Mbps to virtually nothing. I had this problem on my old phone (Samsung galaxy S II) once and a while when I would download a new app, but I haven't downloaded anything new for a couple days. Just all of a sudden, my internet took a crap.
I know it's my N5 because I turn off the wifi and everything goes back to normal on my laptop. I have also tried deleting a bunch of apps and nothing has done the trick.
Has anyone else had this problem or have any advice?

If you're on 5GHz, try 2.4. Also, make sure your router's firmware is up to date. I know, it sounds silly, but it worked for me.
