So if I could hypothetically get the source for i9000 gingerbread... - Captivate General

How fast do you think we would see a captivate kernel for gingerbread?
(any one up for some black ops on samsung?)

theres already captivate kernals for 2.3.3 lol

[Q] Is Froyo 2.2 working on the Captivate?

I've read the sticky "[HOW TO] Galaxy S I9000 ROMs (Eclair & Froyo) on Captivate" and it seems like they're talking about the Eclair 2.1 release most of the way through. Does Froyo work for the Captivate in any way? If so, then does it have any problems that cannot, as of yet, be fixed? Also, how do I do it? I'm new to all of this and want to make sure I don't end up with a bricked device. I'm not scared to do it though, and will benefit from all the improvements 2.2 has to offer (in addition to rooting it and the lag fix and what not). Thanks for your replies!
I havent seen anything stating froyo was running anywhere for the phone.
There are pre pre pre pre pre release versions of froyo out for the I9000 which is mostly compatible with the captivate. These current froyo firmwares are unstable at best and don't really yield any benefit over sticking with eclair for now =P
It can, but not well. The errors are stated on the front of that thread you linked towards the end of the first post.
Speaking of froyo, I came over from vzw(still have them as well) but haven't seen any mention and would Like to know the answer to this, when is the captivate slated to get froyo? I would like an easy answer and not to get flamed. Thanks n advance

Officially September (in corporate time probably November)
Unofficial ROMS will probably pop up in September also we have to port most of them over
It's not CONFIRMED, but a few have "inside sources" saying that there will be a release sometime in September.

No one knows for sure. Possible rumor for the end of September. That is just a rumor because Samsung tweeted about a GPS fix at that time. Now in no way am I suggesting it is coming out during that time.
Shouldn't this really belong in "General"?
That way people can maybe keep this forum for DEVELOPMENT only.
Thanks for the answer guys. Just curious. I read somewhere that the new JiT in froyo was optimized for snapdragon and I actually believe this because the new Droid 2 with the to omap that we all know is a MUch better processor only score 12-14 in linpack. That doesn't make sense. And my Droid x with stock eclair will score as high as ID with froyo on all benchmarks. Hope we aren't n for the same disappointment that was froyo on d2

Official Samsung/AT&T 2.2 Update... does it matter?

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/16/samsung-captivate-on-atandt-gets-android-2-2-all-that-froyo-hasn/
Finally, only ~7 months late.
My only question, does it matter? Will we continue using i9000 based roms or will people be switching over to roms based off this source?
It matters if we want to take advantage of the better call quality while having Froyo.
"Samsung has released an Android 2.2 update and the full instructions plus the download are on the other end of the source link below."
No such link.

Oh right.. noise cancellation! This actually will be appreciated as I get complaints about loud background noise during calls all the time.
Would it be reasonable to think we could plug noise cancellation drivers into a 2.2.1 JS3 based rom?
Until source code is released. We will continue to use i9000 roms. But even aftervthat we prob will anyway....

The link shows a blank page...
Unfortunately the link was to the same page floating around here yesterday, which Samsung has taken down this morning.
If you go to
http://opensource.samsung.com/
and navigate to mobile phones, then download the model SGH-I896
"SGH-I896_OpenSource_froyo.tar.gz" file, isn't that the source?

Yes it is. The source for the I896, which is the Rogers Captivate, not the AT&T Captivate.

Gotcha, so not what my OP was suppose to be.
When the source is finally released im sure it will be easier for people to port noise cancellation over to i9000 source so we can use it with JPY/JS5..etc, before they would have had to port it from elcair, which the source has drastically changed since then ,so it should be easier with an actual captivate froyo source. I for one will still use i9000 roms, 2.2.1 is way better IMO

So the use the best of both worlds... i9000 2.2.1 rom w/ noice cancellation port?
This update will be 100% worth it if it fixes the GPS issues.
I think 2.2 being released will bring us an onslaught of dev magic. It will probably enhance everything on custom roms in some way or another. I can't wait to see what Team Komin can do with this.
A little frustrating that they pulled the site so quickly.

I'm hoping they just noticed their mistake with the "t-mobile tv" app are fixing that and reposting. Key word "hoping".
It shoudln't take more than a minute or two to fix something like that. Also, people have reported trying to update via Kies Mini with no success so far. Can this company do anything without it being a debacle?
Meh, maybe I can change to Cincinnati Bell?

Gingerbread Leaked for Captivate. Infuse on its way?

http://www.androidcentral.com/official-gingerbread-233-samsung-captivate-leaks-out
Gingerbread seems to have leaked out for the Captivate. If gingerbread is in the works for an older device, that means its on its way for the infuse. Right? Right???
Hmm..im gonna check when i get to work later. Im a rep an usually know a week or 2 before an update is released. Normally they do release an update for more than one device. Froyo came out on the captivate an aria at the same time...and seeing the canadian infuse released with gingerbread id say its right around the corner...remember this is our top phone right now. And at&t wants it to stay like that for a bit.

i really dont understand why companies dont release phones with new software.
its kind of irritating waiting for a "Official Update"
How about is it possible to flash The Captivates Gingerbread to the Infuse? lol

I wouldn't count on it. Our phone appears to have a partition layout more akin to the original galaxy s and to top it off our hardware is pretty different, so I wouldn't trust it. People were bricking their infuses in the first week or so by getting a little too adventurous with Captivate stuff.

They don't release it with current software because changing the base software in the middle of the project probably pushes the risk beyond what they are comfortable with.

lets hope the Rogers version does release with gingerbread. only a matter of flashing it.
Ive only had my Infuse for about 2 weeks, and this is my first android so dont kill me when I ask lol. But what is the difference between froyo and gingerbread??

More smoothness with the roms, ability for glow at the end of a scroll, crt animation and built in support for voip.

different drm (it can stream netflix)
smoother browser on Samsung devices which don't have the best browser performance on froyo
smoother/quicker market downloads updates and installs.
cool animations and effects for extra wow factor.

New Rom on SamFirmwares.com: I9000XXJVR (2.3.4)

I9000XXJVR is up! Looks like another iteration to follow up JVP and JVQ.
From the post:
"Its a great weekend! SamFirmware released yesterday special bada files...
And today we release some nice firmwares for the Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy S II together with DarkyROM.
What are the new roms?
I9000XXJVR and I9100XXKG6.
Both roms running Android 2.3.4"
Running an Apex version.of it right now testing.it.out. Seems pretty stable so far. I am using.it with the i897 gingerbread bootloaders.
Sent from My 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 Captivate Test Phone depending on what Gingergurl I am testing.
As far as I know, Apex (V8.3) is still running JVQ. JVR is new as of this weekend, and I haven't seen any Captivate ROMs incorporate it yet.
Im running it right now and as far as i can tell i have no reboots and this morning i took it off the charger with 98 battery. No charge bug i dont think....at least not yet. Im using darkcore with ext4 by the way.
The csc is not jvr,(was not included in the leak) so this one is from jvq so it's kind of incomplete as a whole and is a hybrid of the 2. And deodexing breaks the browser, it doesn't show up as installed even though all the files are in place.
Don't flash ROMs not designed for your phone. That's the number one cause of bricks here on this forum. It takes special handling to go back to the way things were.

I totally understand where your coming from. But in my defense i am currently running it with the i897 ginger bootloaders and.not having.any issues so far. Plus this is my test/backup phone.
I cannot add the android 2.3 keyboard i usually use since.it not a deodexed.rom yet. I have read about the browser breaking if it is deodexed. I even ran for a bit with the tegrak overclocking app and.it seemed.to work. Again it is my test phone so i like messing around and seeing what.i can do with it. The test i got already has put out a small update to add the battery mod. Looking forwad to more.testing.

[Q) ICS Port

So it has been announced that the SGS2 line will be updated to ICS Saturday. Will a port be possible to the infuse? I know its different chip sets, and all the other goodies, but will it still be possible?

maybe if it was i9000 ( sgs1 ) we just use linuxbozo's tool

No go, tried. Aosp only way, and porting is extremely hard because ics uses completely new drivers. If the gingerbread and ics kernels are woven together, it would work. Part of the reason why ICS is hard to come by is it is so different. Btw, be ready to be told no infuse devs will do it, i do not blame them. Sammy loves sacrificing peoples thoughts with money.... like apple does. Seems to gather the most people too lol....
So is once a week the expected occurrence of these type of threads now-a-days??
Even the flamers are gave up haha

lb's tool doesnt magically compile a kernel for operating systems the came out after the creation of the tool. that would be cool though.....
what hellraiser is is a normal infuse kernel and a collection of hardware libs pulled directly from an infuse rom to interface with the kernel. it only does gb and was only possible because gingerbread was already available on the rogers infuse.
but an i9000 ics release could potentially help an infuse port but we would need a kernel dev in on it that had some knowledge of the differences between ics and gingerbread. but in reality the biggest thing holding up an aosp version (with some things broken of coarse) is a lack of a dev familiar with aosp ports on galaxy s phones. much of the major hardware is the same as the nexus s, even tha galaxy nexus has the gpu of our phone. the cpu, gpu, audio, ect are not nessessarily a problem. wifi, gps, bluetooth, mhl, and cell connection/data could be problems but wifi and gps work in cm7 so its posible they'd also work in ics.
Oh God here we go again

Alright cool. So it's a no go. That's all. And for you with the ignorant comment, what do you get out of them? nothing. I laugh at you more than the ignorance thrown out there.
Idk where you get your info at but no... the sgs2 line is not updating to ics that soon. Since Samsung decided to touch whiz the hell out if it, its nothing but a damn mess. Weve been working with it for weeks and its crap. Aosp is your best bet. As I will have aosp booted on the note soon
dman - +1 The update is currently available in Europe and Asia. If it comes to the US, it will likely be months. In the meantime Entropy512 has done a very nice job with CM9 for the Infuse (development thread)
