So it has been announced that the SGS2 line will be updated to ICS Saturday. Will a port be possible to the infuse? I know its different chip sets, and all the other goodies, but will it still be possible?
If I were you, I'd don a flak jacket quick!

No go, tried. Aosp only way, and porting is extremely hard because ics uses completely new drivers. If the gingerbread and ics kernels are woven together, it would work. Part of the reason why ICS is hard to come by is it is so different. Btw, be ready to be told no infuse devs will do it, i do not blame them. Sammy loves sacrificing peoples thoughts with money.... like apple does. Seems to gather the most people too lol....
So is once a week the expected occurrence of these type of threads now-a-days??
Even the flamers are gave up haha

lb's tool doesnt magically compile a kernel for operating systems the came out after the creation of the tool. that would be cool though.....
what hellraiser is is a normal infuse kernel and a collection of hardware libs pulled directly from an infuse rom to interface with the kernel. it only does gb and was only possible because gingerbread was already available on the rogers infuse.
but an i9000 ics release could potentially help an infuse port but we would need a kernel dev in on it that had some knowledge of the differences between ics and gingerbread. but in reality the biggest thing holding up an aosp version (with some things broken of coarse) is a lack of a dev familiar with aosp ports on galaxy s phones. much of the major hardware is the same as the nexus s, even tha galaxy nexus has the gpu of our phone. the cpu, gpu, audio, ect are not nessessarily a problem. wifi, gps, bluetooth, mhl, and cell connection/data could be problems but wifi and gps work in cm7 so its posible they'd also work in ics.
Oh God here we go again

Alright cool. So it's a no go. That's all. And for you with the ignorant comment, what do you get out of them? nothing. I laugh at you more than the ignorance thrown out there.
Idk where you get your info at but no... the sgs2 line is not updating to ics that soon. Since Samsung decided to touch whiz the hell out if it, its nothing but a damn mess. Weve been working with it for weeks and its crap. Aosp is your best bet. As I will have aosp booted on the note soon
dman - +1 The update is currently available in Europe and Asia. If it comes to the US, it will likely be months. In the meantime Entropy512 has done a very nice job with CM9 for the Infuse (development thread)

Um, get your facts straight before posting. XXLPQ (official ICS for I9100) was released over a month ago.

What is the reason? I'm really curious about that.
We have one. Check here for a list of all roms. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887525
The only ones I found were Froyo with Gingerbread themes...
There are some what of Gingerbread ROM's ported from the I9000, with CM7, Far from a daily ROM. As well it is sort of difficult to actually flash, crazy kernel crap.
There is a team working on bringing 2.3 to the galaxy s. I haven't heard anything in about a month but they still had some issues to work out

CM7 for SGS
There were people working on porting gingerbread to the captivate but many of them are now involved in the project to bring CM7 to the i9000 and the captivate. The i9000 however seems to be the priority and it is not yet complete search for cmsgs on google to find out more
The problem is that we don't have the source to all of the proprietary Samsung bits, like hardware drivers, leaving some of the hardware either completely non-functional or malfunctioning. With the 2.2 roms, it's a lot easier because we have leaked 2.2 roms that were designed for our hardware, or the source code for other devices in the galaxy s line.
Though the Nexus S is similar to the Galaxy S line, there are a few hardware differences that make porting difficult. I've been following the CM7 twitter feed for the i9000 - it seems like they've figured most of the stuff out. The major hurdle was that the camera wasn't working, which it now is, and the remaining problems are all somewhat minor things - polling problem in the radio interface layer, wifi glitches.. Hopefully we'll see a proper build a lot sooner now that the camera has been sorted.

just falshed away from CM7 it is not all working
The main parts are working but many things still do not work for our cappys or the I9000 or the vibernt.
It is very useable if u dont use bluetooth, moible AP, Car docking, andmany other highly used featers.
It is fine for web surfing and Phone calls, and texting, and a few other minor things.
So for those of us that need the biger parts of the ROM to work it just isnt going to cut it.
I see there a few i9000 no CM7 2.3.2 roms also i have seen a vibernt 2.3.2 rom.
It comes down to no one has worked or completed work on 2.3.x to our cappys. besides the CM7 thats far from 100% ready for the masses.
I mean i can handle giveing up a few things but with a few custom 2.2 roms and a nice kernel i get benchmarks and many other scores just as high if not higher then CM7 2.3.3, and give up nothing.
So y flash and deal with a few reboots and force close prb i found with a few apps.
Btw yes i had the most current cm7 20110304.
i wish it worked a little better and i am sure it will it just takes time.
I figer this y work on that ROM when we have an i9000 2.3.2 rom unsure but i think it would be easier to port. then an non sammy rom.
But much many be learned there at CM7 helping in converting the sammy 2.3.2 to our cappys.
But i can say i am a bit unhappy that vibernt got the i9000 working on there ohones frist
Those are just my opions not tring to offend anyone.
I've been using CM7 with no problems
I've been using CM7 as a daily driver for a week now, with no issues. I love it actually! You can find clear instructions on how to install it here:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...7-for-samsung-galaxy-s-phones-build-20110303/
I would love to upgrade to gingerbread someday when they work the knicks out of it. I will wait til this phone gets old enough not to worry about abuse lol.

The WiFi issue was fixed today, so we migth get an updated release today.
The one issue that made come back to a Samsung ROM is the camera. The picture quality is mediocre at best, and it takes too long to start. Its really unfortunate because otherwise the rom works way better than any other rom. Seriously, I just noticed today his ****ing ****ty the browser is in stock ROMS.

not too fast right now, i mean not on the infuse rom front. we are dealing with outdated software and honestly a kinda shotty gb kernel for a rogers phone. i think the infuse is not that popular with the elite devs who already worked on the galaxy s and want something new. we still have some great skill with a cm7 bringup that is as functional as any phone with our bluetooth chip. the amazing thing about it is that it is almost all done by one dev. the cm team isnt woring on it as far as i know.
fortunately if you are a rom junkie the same dev that brought us cm7 also brought us "galaxy helraiser which is a collection of libraries and a few other files (camera app, modem, busybox, kernel) that allows the use of i9000 firmware to run on the infuse with the infuse kernel and modem.bin.
with hellraiser you can sift through the vibrant, i9000 and captivate sections looking for hoards of i9000 gb based roms to flash.

cell radio firmware. it may effect battery life, reception, dataspeeds and other things, right now there is only a few versions and there isnt much difference. but an i9000 modem.bin is for a different radio, it wont work. much like the i9000 kernel wont support the infuse hardware and the libs wont communicate with the infuse kernel and hardware.

Honestly in all due respect, I tried contacting several people from Samsung and tried to get answers to all my question's from those bone heads. I think Samsung is dragging their feet on Gingerbread, this has nothing to do with At&t at all. At&t was ready to give us some sort of GB release back in August, seems to me Samsung keeps holding back because all their newer phones are getting the most respect right now and not our already 1 penny Infuse.

Samsung is a complete joke. This is like a bad OS software. EX: Windows ME!, theirs nothing they can fix so they skipped it creating another phone next to this, Basically the only phone next to this would be the SkyRocket, Shares all aspects of our beloved Infuse, just upgraded hardware and better Support, plus they are getting ICS in the beginning of next year.

Ok I am personally going to start a new trend of not talking about ICS, CM9, or heck even Jelly Bean. If I can see that the Devs are starting to get annoyed with the constant onslaught of ICS, CM9, and CM7 questions and soon next month if it is released Jelly Bean. I guess if you can't help Develop, then you really have absolutely no place to complain about how long things are taking this is not a "customer Service" situation. Devs are here because they want to improve their own phones, or this is their hobby. They are not here to develop you a product. That's what Samsung is for in our case. If you are honestly angry about how long it is taking for us to get ICS then write T-mobile and Samsung not the Devs here that are spending their free time in order to eventually bring these awesome ROMS to our phones. Since I joined a year ago I watched Devs and entire teams leave (when is the last time you saw a Team Whiskey ROM?)So I for one am going to Back off on all the ICS business and let the Devs do their thing Without Having to stop constantly and answer the same questions over and over again. We have limited Devs that can at any sell off their SGS4g's and say "screw this" and move on to another phone. Guys seriously instead of constantly asking the Devs lets try something new ( or old to some of us) and ask Google, Yahoo, Ask.com, and or any other search engine you so choose and let the Devs concentrate on Developing.
One day people will learn how to ignore annoying posts. One day..........

My question had still not been answered a
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA
The answer( as I have come to understand, but I maybe wrong) is well parts can but for the most part the linux kernel is the part of the OS that houses all the device, and processor specific drivers. To make matters worse is some of those drivers are also OS specific. meaning Froyo versions won't work with a Ginger bread distro and so on. To port an Android distro you have one of two choices to make it work. Recompile some or all of the libs to work with the older kernel. Or create a kernel from scratch by finding other devices the have the same hardware that have been upgraded to ICS. Often many devices have pieces of the same hardware as your phone. Sometimes it takes scouring different phones to find phones that share pieces of your hardware.

@ bot42
You are precisely correct. We at Team Kick Ass have found a way to do just that. Unfortunately, it is a very time consuming process as we have to pull many of the information, files, and things from source. I said this once and I will say it agian. Everything is in the process of being worked on. Please be patient.
Thanks sorry if I sounded rude but all the comments that were posted were way off topic that's all I'm in no hurry for ics just seen that Samsung released source for it was trying to be helpful

Yep to port a feature from one device to the next is hard a kernel/whole rom requires a lot of time and that is where my free time is being spent between reading and trying a lot of stuff
So, there are two efforts going on.
The first is what TeamKickAss is working on. I haven't seen what they are doing or any plans posted.
The second is what I'm working on over in the aosp port thread.
This port is a little more ambitious to port to three different versions.
first port sgs4g specific parts to android-samsung-2.6.35-gingerbread
then port that set of changes to android-samsung-3.0-ics branch (both branches originate from the upstream aosp samsung kernel)
the last port I will do will be to Linus's tree at whatever version it is when I get to this step.
So in the end, we'll have:
a stock kj6 kernel
the various kernels that forked from my bml and mtd kernels
aosp gb port
a couple ics kernel ports (one by teamacid, and one by teamkickass)
3.6 kernel port(or maybe 3.7)?
So, there is a peek in the crystal ball I have.
The future's so bright, gotta wear shades
Hi Bryan
Wassup?
I have a friend with SGS i9000, (which didn't get official ICS) nevertheless he installed an ICS 4.04 AOSP ROM on it, working flawlessly.
So my question is, once kernel port will reach its purpose, will we be able to successfully port such ROM ? (PS. I downloaded that ROM and saw some MTD_over_BML stuff inside)
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
i bet kickass can port it within a few days of an ICS kernel, but ports aren't always the most reliable/stable/fast. It'd be easier just to build from source. That way, we'd have a stable rom, and easier bug fixing.

Lmao, boo sack. Funniest asian guy ever. But, I digress. Yeah, it's because the source was a mess. The people who happened to be interested in the phone aren't mature mostly. Most of the userbase of the Sidekick 4G are teenagers/kids. (It's always how it's been since it was released, it was nothing but a fad.) Most teens tend to not know how to program at an early age, (though there are some who can). Personally, my Galaxy S II has Jelly Bean 4.1.1 and has been receiving upgrades since Gingerbread 2.3.6, including 4.0.1, 4.0.3, and as of today, 4.0.4. The reason this is the case is because this phone is generally bought more in stores. Companies are willing to spend more time and money if they are in-turn making money on a phone. It's the same story on the SGH-T959V side (Galaxy S 4G). The two phones seem to be marketed at parents with teenagers.
Our forums get flooded with demanding unknowledgeable (and they don't seek knowledge either) teenagers, and we have very few device developers.
Galaxy S 4G was lucky to get Gingerbread. Sadly, I was hoping SK4G would also at least get gingerbread, but it got stuck on froyo.
There is a glimmer of hope. If you search some of code in the Galaxy S 4G's source drop, you find mentions of sidekick in there.
Search this file for SIDEKICK. The difference between the Galaxy S 4G and Captivate Gingerbread source drop are very little (although they are very different devices and take very different paths in the code).
So the sk4g is still an aries device and imho, can at least get a gingerbread port.
Galaxy S 4G has been ported to CM9, AOKP, SlimICS, Gummy (when it existed, not so much now), and a few other GB and ICS based "from source" roms. So GB and ICS should still be possible on SK4G. And I know we plan on porting JB after we finalize the sgs4g to aries kernel port, and since SK4G and SGS4G hardware is similiar (plus or minus a few components) SK4G should be able to run JB.
It will all just take a little time.

He has some interesting ways of getting things to work.
There is more then one way to skin a cat.
Ahh, and yes.. 4.0.4 would be delicious on the sidekick 4G, is it possible? I or is the hardware difficult to deal with? I'm thinking of learning how 2 become a dev myself

Im never buying another product with the name sidekick in it, it just gets abandoned. Like a prom dress, wear in once then lose it.

Hahaha, this happened to more then just this phone. The only reason the galaxy s 4g has anything is because me and a few other people stuck it out.
There are other phones that never got anything and were more then capable of running everything up to jellybean.
The funny thing is, I hear a lot of users get all butt-hurty because their phone doesn't have the latest greatest rom. I say: too bad.
This is xda-developers.com, not xda-pimp-my-phone.com. The developers choose which phone they want to dev on, and go for it. Sometimes they are good and sometimes they suck. If a phone doesn't have too many developers, it's kind of a sign.
It sounds like there are a few devs around here that still want to make things happen.
So I wouldn't write off the sk4g quite yet. But also, don't expect things to happen right away.
Patience.

Im not the type to whine when i dont have jellybean on my sk, however i do get upset this phone still has alot of problem even after running half assed roms on my phone. No real dev here yet, most likely never will be one.

There was. They got chased off by the ungreatfuls.
sduvick, ayoteddy for example were two of the best devs for this phone. And if it weren't for them, we'd still probably running stock-ass-retarded phones.

Aggreed 100% I've been here since pretty much the release of the sk4g and the original dev teams were on the ball but had very little to work with I bet you sduvick and ay0teddy got some patchwork gb to work or at least cm6 or cm7 running on the sk4g but kept it to themselves. I've watched this forum go downhill till the official discontinuation of the phone and I'm pretty sure if I managed to get gb or ics running on my sk4g is keep it to myself with all the kanging and immaturity on here. But that's just opinion. I personally don't think the sk4g could handle ics only due to the lack of ram. The hummingbird 1Ghz processor could handle it but lack of ram would make it unbearable especially for a stock OTA.

Nah, sgs4g has the same specs, and can handle ics just fine.

As a matter of fact, our phone can handle Jelly Bean.
I think I should just get it over with, I'm gonna buy the Samsung galaxy s 3, forget physical keyboards exist, and throw this phone into a bucket of fresh cement.
