it will be ota and my guess both versions will get updates at the same time seeing as their are 2 different models of the nexus one at the moment (att and T-Mobile) that still get otas simultaneously. They are different models but essentially the same os

This amazing thing happens, a popup says an update is available and you click it.
What do you think would happen?

In defense of the OP, I think the question is more of a "I wonder how it works" since the Wifi version doesn't have an IEMI number to register with Google's servers. My assumption is that it uses our device ID instead. mine is something like android_75ac12540 (I know thats wrong, but it is similar)

thanks. yeah...am wondering how the ota servers will identify these wi-fi xooms.
Is it Possible...
that on a WiFi only Xoom, some sort of app occasionally pings a Motorola server to seek an update? I believe that this is the method used by Barnes and Noble to provide OTA Nook updates.
I don't think it possible that Motorola could seek out each individual Xoom, and in any case, how would they get around individual router security from the outside?
What I am guessing is that it will come in the same as an app update from the market. Essentially the market was made smart with the recent release of HC, to be able to detect the device that is signing in with your google account. Its software version is listed as well (which is why some people with custom roms cant send apps to their phones via the web marketplace) so the market will be able to tell if there is an update, notify you... and then give you the option to download it. They cannot push an update to your Xoom without a wifi connection, and due to it being intermittent, you can guess that it will be optional.
Thanks to those taking time to share in the discussion.
...post via N1
We all know our devices ping the servers of whichever brand and carrier your device belongs aswell as the fact that there is a myriad of different id numbers to choose from. My best guess is that moto has a ping app on the device to allievate firewall issues and that will trigger an update in the traditional ota sense. (Thanks to the person who id'd the source of the last update to a moto server, not a google one.)

Same here... I have it DL'd and have a titanium backup copy still so I'm good. I checked AppPlanet and it's in there still so you can grab it from there if you want it.
Its not available on the market anymore because Verizon is attempting to stop free wireless tethering. Check this link for a quick blog about it. Apparently AT&T has started warning its customers to stop tethering if not paying for it. Now it looks like Verizon is starting to follow along with AT&T.
Exactly the reason I also have a copy of the apk on my SD card.
the answer is yes, verizon blocks certain apps like tether apps and hotspot. ATT does the same thing. long live AOSP phones!!
google 'wireless tether for root' and you will find links to download it, straight from the developer(s)
I've noticed some other apps are missing as well. Notably I can't seem to find "Gensoid" the Sega Genesis emulator. Other Genesis emulators, and other *soid apps (i.e. nesoid) are present, but Gensoid (which I bought for my gTab) isn't present. I assume I can pull Gensoid from my gTab, but it's odd that it's missing and it's frustrating.

Then its possible that was a malicious app as Google itself will take down apps they find malicious. No reason for Verizon to take it down.

So, if Verizon can block you from downloading certain applications, can they see what applications you've already installed? I thought that information was between the End-User and Google, and not Verizon. Also, can they remote-wipe the application? If Google can remote-wipe, is there a way to disable that functionality if you're a rooted user? It kind of pisses me off that Verizon can have say over what I download from the Android Market.
On an otherwise off-topic note, what other App Stores are there (Amazon I know of) and are they safe/trustworthy to use?

AT&T contacted me via SMS to let me know they were watching. I was utilizing TetherMe via Cydia. Was I being a data hog? No. I was using 3GB to 5GB of bandwidth on my unlimited plan. What was my usage prior to tethering. Still in that ball park.
When I called in to inquire (I played dumb), they explained that they knew I was tethering. The man on the other line was patient despite me asking stupid questions to try and throw him off. But I firmly believe that they are only after users on the Unlimited plan who are tethering.
They sent this SMS to me last week. In less than 4 days I switched carriers. Each time I called to get my number ported, the AT&T rep acting frantically wanted to know why. I was a 15yr customer. I just grinned to the Verizon rep.

How on earth can they know that a user is tethering? The traffic sent to and from the data gateway should appear the same, shouldn't it?

If it wasn't already obvious based on the type of traffic you are sending/receiving (craploads of torrents, p2p, etc), they could potentially verify source based on data packets sent/received.
Browsers generally send data that shows what they're running on as well through the user agent, though you can always change that.
Feel free to run a tcpdump on your phone with wireshark or something similar and just look around at what gets sent for yourself.

Only weighs in at 19.3MB using the old changelog but if you check out Verizon's document it says it's 29.30 MB.
From RW:
Corrected Issues:
1) A software change was made to support the latest requirement for eHRPD to HRPD fallback
2) A software change was made to support the latest requirement for IPV6 in EHRPD
3) A software change was made to address an issue causing a audio screeching sound to be heard when users have an active application playing in the back ground and you receive and answer an incoming call
4) A software change was made to address an issue that was causing a continuous noise or notification tone to be heard that started during a phone power up and would not stop until you pulled down the status bar in some rare cases
5) A software change was made to the calculations used for determining what is displayed to better reflect the signal available.
6) A software change was made to address an issue causing the device to drop down to 3G service earlier then it should in some cases
7) A software change was made to address an issue causing devices to show no signal and roaming when a specific PRL file (I5103) is loaded on the device

My layman's reading was that it applied to everyone, but the main point was that they could not try to block 3rd party tethering apps anymore. Could explain why WiFi Tether showed up in the Market. From my reading the tiered vs. unlimited point was mainly used by Verizon as a defense.

My using the term "block" was incorrect. Essentially, they can still charge the tethering fee to those on unlimited plans...
In addition, the company recently revised its service offerings such that consumers on usage-based
pricing plans may tether, using any application, without paying an additional fee.

I keep thinking I'm going to get a new phone as soon as I can. Dwitherell is doing a great job on developing roms but Imnuts is not doing kernels for the charge any more. Development for the Charge is almost at a standstill. I'm not excited about FP5 at all. I'm never going to run stock software in a smart phone. There's just way too much bloatware.
So? Root it and remove the bloatware. I haven't installed DW's rom because my phone is critical for work and I spend too much time at work and commuting to deal with any extra issues. But I've got to say that it's been damn hard not too bite the bullet and flash it. I know it's awesome.
I've debloated it and added extended battery. 4g coverage is good and don't need gps. Yeah, we'll never see ICS or JB on this phone but it works for those that don't have to suffer the squealing.
It's first generation 4g. I don't expect the world and my laptop can more than handle anything this phone can't.
Seriously - you can see the difference just rooted and debloated. Try it.
Still Charged Up
talk to a VZW technician today, and he said the FP5 supposedly fixes the squealing and unblocks some websites that folks were having troubles with.

rooting a friends phone:
Try Open Garden or WiFi Tethering (root) apps from market.
You've conflated a couple questions here.
"Which ROMs have a built-in feature for WiFi tethering?"
Most, if not all, do.
"Given that T-Mobile generally prohibits tethering, is there a way that I can tether in a way that I am not blocked by T-Mobile?"
Yes, there are several ways that you can make the traffic appear as though it originated on your phone. Most, if not all, of these are applications, use of things like VPN or ssh tunneling, or configuration of your tethered clients. There are several approaches. Search is your friend on finding one that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Yes that works or just go to settings>wireless and networks>tethering. No need for an app if its built in but if you want one there's plenty to choose from
Wifi tethering used to work no problem on my phone but T-Mobile very recently seems to have changed something where they can detect it - on ICS ROM's - and block it in the browser on your computer. It takes a few link clicks to get the blocked page.
For this - I have to switch to a google related user agent to not have wifi tethering blocked.

that's funny, i'm using aokp (latest team acid build), and i was just using wifi tethering with no problems at all. not to mention that i'm not even supposed to have it since i have the new plan "truly unlimited 4g." the problem i do have though is usb tethering. i gave my team members a log to see if its fixable the other day, but haven't heard anything yet. its no big deal to me unless i wanna use it to tether my pc when our dsl daily cap is reached (which is everyday, but "i" don't use the pc everyday). basically just gave em the log to try and help those who do want/need it.

It was new for me. And only through the browser. Still connects no problem but after several clicks it will pop up a T-Mobile page saying I don't have the tethering package. I am on Raver's ICS Audiophile.
I was tethering just fine on vacation last week, until I got a text message from T-mobile saying they were blocking it, and sure enough it quit working.
I gotta look into the user agent spoofing I guess... at least before my next trip.
(All three of the hotels I was in were changing $5-10 for internet!)
T-Mobile is on a roll!
Didn't actually think they were gonna give something for nothing did ya.
They know that with strategic planning...(lower the plan price and give you more data)....if they give a little....you'll want more,so now they can ask for more, and sleep soundly when they go to bed at night.

I thought with Google Chrome you have to have the Developers Tools open for that to persist. Is there a simple way to make it stick without having to have the developer tools window open? Thanks.
Edit: Ok, so tried the APN switch on Google chrome last night and it did work, while the developers tools window is open. Only issue was that some of the sites that my wife uses that have display issues on mobile web now have the same issue on the PC...I'm not talking about page layout, but specific links and options not displaying....the reason she still needs to use the PC in the first place. I can definitely recommend the APN fix to people being blocked by Tmobile as a quick simple fix as previously stated in this thread. It took a little longer to set up, but I'm sticking with the VPN for full functionality.
Regarding the wifi use with VPN; I haven't been able to get it to work yet, so sticking with the Bluetooth for now.

For some apparantly random reason, my AT&T mobile I.P. has been blocked by Google. I am a very light user, and haven't done any unusual searching in recent days, but just the other day I started to get this error;
"We're sorry...but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now." WTF?
Most of the time, it ends there, but every now and then it at least allows me to enter a captcha to temporarily use their services. I've sent my additional information through Google's automated webform but have not heard back from them yet.
I've wiped my OS, reformatted back to factory settings, I've tried multiple browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Dolphin) to no avail. I spent 3 hours talking to at&t customer tech 'support'. They had no clue and basically told me to get a new phone.
I'm at my wits end here. If anyone can help It would be greatly appreciated.

This is still going on, and I'm about to give up on Google all together. What good is a Google phone if I can't use Google? There is absolutely no way to contact them and ask what the deal is. I've tried everything I could think of. Searching around the internet, the only solution I see is to run a memory/bandwidth wasting proxy service like Orbot (which didn't work for me btw), or Hotspot Shield (which seems to work but slows my internet connection down considerably.)
I still am not sure if this is AT&T's problem or Google's. I don't have a static I.P. which lead me to believe the problem was with my google account. However, logging into a different account gave the same result.
Google support is a joke. They have no support whatsoever for Android, and the only 'solution' they give is download and run HijackThis. WTF?

Aren't ATT'S ip addresses for mobile phones dynamic?
Maybe something in the Rom is wrong and sending erroneous, malicious, or constant traffic to google and they are blocking you because of it.
What happens on a different Rom? Try CR5 and see if you have the same problems.
Try a stock Rom too.
If you only have the issue with a particular Rom(clean wipe with no apps installed) then someone needs to look at it closely for either bad code, or something malicious.
Maybe you have a bad app?
Do you tether? Infected laptop being used as a bot against Google's DNS?
Sounds like whatever the cause, it is persistent. Intrusion protection systems will remove the block automatically after the event has ceased for a certain period of time.

Just wish i knew the cause... could it be a custom rom thing? anybody ever seen this on a stock rom?
if this persists, and it does it on a stock rom too, i'm off to ATT to complain. With all the network issues etc that they exchanged this phone for in the beginning, i might be able to get a one X+ for exchange. What's your location when this is happening? Can the op verify that his issue is only happening on LTE also? What about when you are on WiFi(different ip address)?
It is possible to spoof originating ip, maybe attacks/spam against Google are being spoofed and they happen to lie within ATT's ip blocks and you have nothing to do with it.

Although IPs are assigned dynamically, it's not unheard of for an IP address to stick with an associated MAC address for an extended amount of time (even after multiple lease expirations/renewals). Try this in an Android Terminal:
Code:
$ su
# netcfg
You'll see all of your network adapters listed, and the one with an IP address is your mobile data IP. Make note of this IP, as well as what the name of the network adapter is (on my Vivid, it's rmnet_sdio1 - which is what I'll be using from here. Anywhere you see this, replace it with the name of your adapter).
Code:
# ifconfig rmnet_sdio1 down
This takes the adapter down (basically like an ipconfig /release)
Code:
# ifconfig rmnet_sdio1 up
This brings the adapter back online.
Now reboot.
Open a terminal again
Code:
# ifconfig rmnet_sdio1
Did you get a new IP address? Try Google again. If you still are told Google's blocking your IP, and it's happening on stock too, ATT has some issues they need to take up with Google...

I'm in NY City and Long Island. NYC has had LTE for several months, LI for just a few weeks(new area like you). Use LTE a lot in both areas and have never had an issue. I run CRV with 2.41+ril radio.

North Carolina, 2.41 Radio. 2.20 radio before that. Happened on both
I tried what homeslice976 wrote, step by step. I was given a new I.P. address, I rebooted and the problem did not go away. I also tried with LTE toggled off. Still blocked. When I'm at home on my WiFi, there is no problem. This is definitely an AT&T issue.
If this doesn't resolve itself soon I'm gonna tell AT&T to go **** themselves, buy a nexus 4 and give T-Mobile a try.

Good plan.

I just activated the free trial after following the instructions in the first post of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1757991
I did have to input a new payment method in Google Wallet, and even though there was only US based addresses it accepted my address (I used the Zip Code and phone number for the Empire State building!). I was fully expecting it to fail, but it works, and my gmail account now has the All Access trial attached to it.....
Anyone else had a go at this?

Tried it yesterday and giving it another go now. Struggling at the point when I click the free trial banner, it constantly takes me to my music library. No prompt for payment or even starting the trial. I managed to activate my account through a VPN a few months ago without any problems, but trying to get this pass is proving to be a right pain.
I did it via the web page, not on my phone.

I've been doing the same.
Changed my payment method's address (the zip code / state at least) to an American one but still no luck.
Just managed to do it. You have to edit an EXISTING card just by changing the address. Adding a new card with an American address didn't work.
Just change the address on any existing card you have, start the trial, and then change it back.
Is this not going to cause problems on the account when it officially launches in the UK? I've found that kind of thing before.
worked well for me!
Confirmed working here. Signed up through US VPN, Tesco's credit card, and Empire State Building zip code/tel no.
Peachy.
What do you think will happen if I leave it to run past the free trial. Will I get charged in US dollars? Might be cheaper than getting ripped off when it comes legit to the UK.

.
I'm not sure, but if they didn't do a full check including address when the payment method was set up, I don't think they will for such a small payment. I also think $7.99 (£5.25) will be considerably less than the UK subscription.
I guess that since I signed up using a US VPN, the transaction was conducted via a US website and hence not subject to UK fees. You know, a bit like taxes. I mean, if it's good enough for Google...
Worked for me. Nice one

I have a feeling I know why I can't get it working.
I still have a remaining £0.08 Google Play balance on my account (from the Nexus 7 promotion) and so I can't change my account's default location (in the settings menu on Wallet). I have followed everyone's steps rigorously and I still don't even get past the initial "Sign up" banner.
It's the only thing I can think of.
nice up~
Thanks!!
Just got this working i Denmark using your guide.
Now lets see how well it works.
I've read a couple of places, that they don't have all that much music yet, But i'll have to see for my self

I found this when I tried last week also. Managed to get mine to 0 but still no luck, the Wallet settings still claim you have a balance. Been talking to Google Support but not much help, if anyone can point me in a better direction I'd be grateful!
Just a quick question guys... will this then work on a mobile using cellular from the UK? Is it the account AA is attached to then it performs no futher geo-check?
Thanks

My family devices are all linked to my Google Music account. All our phones, Nexus 7s, laptops etc. are able to use it perfectly - 3G and wifi. I've had no problems at all - just hoping the payment goes through ok after the first month.

Cool thanks - wondering how this would work with an iPhone... does it work running on the mobile version of the site or is it limited to the Google app?
It runs through the desktop site and the app, as long as you have signed up to the subscription I can't see why it wouldn't work on the mobile website too.
