For some apparantly random reason, my AT&T mobile I.P. has been blocked by Google. I am a very light user, and haven't done any unusual searching in recent days, but just the other day I started to get this error;
"We're sorry...but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now." WTF?
Most of the time, it ends there, but every now and then it at least allows me to enter a captcha to temporarily use their services. I've sent my additional information through Google's automated webform but have not heard back from them yet.
I've wiped my OS, reformatted back to factory settings, I've tried multiple browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Dolphin) to no avail. I spent 3 hours talking to at&t customer tech 'support'. They had no clue and basically told me to get a new phone.
I'm at my wits end here. If anyone can help It would be greatly appreciated.
HTC One X w/ CM10 also tried Paranoid android and AOKP.
use tor!...
or wait for google to respond...
:silly::silly::silly:
StartPage. Com I think, uses Google but doesn't log ip addresses.
edit:
Or use the orbot app which will mask your ip from all websites. It also encrypts and compresses all data from your isp(ATT&T).
Edit2: Not sure if it compresses but I remember an app doing that, not sure which one

Same thing happened to me, and it was after rooting and installing Calkulin's ROM. I have no idea how to fix it or know what is causing it
this happened to me using boat browser, eventually google asked for to do a capcha thingy and its been working fine since
Same thing here. I was also on Calkulin's Rom. I noticed it happened to me only when I'm on LTE and only when using Google Now. All is well now.

Found it, hot spot shield will encrypt your data, mask the ip and compress your data. Perfect!

This is still going on, and I'm about to give up on Google all together. What good is a Google phone if I can't use Google? There is absolutely no way to contact them and ask what the deal is. I've tried everything I could think of. Searching around the internet, the only solution I see is to run a memory/bandwidth wasting proxy service like Orbot (which didn't work for me btw), or Hotspot Shield (which seems to work but slows my internet connection down considerably.)
I still am not sure if this is AT&T's problem or Google's. I don't have a static I.P. which lead me to believe the problem was with my google account. However, logging into a different account gave the same result.
Google support is a joke. They have no support whatsoever for Android, and the only 'solution' they give is download and run HijackThis. WTF?
Seriously frustrated.

Aren't ATT'S ip addresses for mobile phones dynamic?
Maybe something in the Rom is wrong and sending erroneous, malicious, or constant traffic to google and they are blocking you because of it.
What happens on a different Rom? Try CR5 and see if you have the same problems.
Try a stock Rom too.
If you only have the issue with a particular Rom(clean wipe with no apps installed) then someone needs to look at it closely for either bad code, or something malicious.
Maybe you have a bad app?
Do you tether? Infected laptop being used as a bot against Google's DNS?
Sounds like whatever the cause, it is persistent. Intrusion protection systems will remove the block automatically after the event has ceased for a certain period of time.

Happening to me too. Doesnt even show the captcha anymore, just cant use the web. This is on LTE only. If i toggle LTE off, it works fine. Using Viper Rom.
Here is your super fast LTE... but you cant use it! Only thing its good for is speed test. This is very annoying. And we shouldn't have to use any xtra software to spoof our IP to browse. Totally uncalled for.
Just wish i knew the cause... could it be a custom rom thing? anybody ever seen this on a stock rom?
if this persists, and it does it on a stock rom too, i'm off to ATT to complain. With all the network issues etc that they exchanged this phone for in the beginning, i might be able to get a one X+ for exchange. They told me after the last exchange i could change phones if i had anymore problems... I am in a new LTE marjet too if that matters. We just got LTE a month ago..
OP are you in a new LTE market?

What's your location when this is happening? Can the op verify that his issue is only happening on LTE also? What about when you are on WiFi(different ip address)?
It is possible to spoof originating ip, maybe attacks/spam against Google are being spoofed and they happen to lie within ATT's ip blocks and you have nothing to do with it.

Although IPs are assigned dynamically, it's not unheard of for an IP address to stick with an associated MAC address for an extended amount of time (even after multiple lease expirations/renewals). Try this in an Android Terminal:
Code:
$ su
# netcfg
You'll see all of your network adapters listed, and the one with an IP address is your mobile data IP. Make note of this IP, as well as what the name of the network adapter is (on my Vivid, it's rmnet_sdio1 - which is what I'll be using from here. Anywhere you see this, replace it with the name of your adapter).
Code:
# ifconfig rmnet_sdio1 down
This takes the adapter down (basically like an ipconfig /release)
Code:
# ifconfig rmnet_sdio1 up
This brings the adapter back online.
Now reboot.
Open a terminal again
Code:
# ifconfig rmnet_sdio1
Did you get a new IP address? Try Google again. If you still are told Google's blocking your IP, and it's happening on stock too, ATT has some issues they need to take up with Google...

I tried what homeslice976 wrote, step by step. I was given a new I.P. address, I rebooted and the problem did not go away. I also tried with LTE toggled off. Still blocked. When I'm at home on my WiFi, there is no problem. This is definitely an AT&T issue.
If this doesn't resolve itself soon I'm gonna tell AT&T to go **** themselves, buy a nexus 4 and give T-Mobile a try.

Hmm, same result here. What security did you have enabled? I had WPA2 or whatever the option was. I tried changing it to open, but it got stuck trying to disable. Playing with it now, will report back.
EDIT: Hmm, no joy. It connects but it won't give an IP address to a client. I tried, the builtin mobile hotspot, and Android Wireless Tether from the market with no luck. I did manage to get it to assign an IP to my macbook using Bluetooth PAN, but it wouldn't allow any browsing. Ipad won't get an IP either. There has to be a fix for it, but it's dinner time! I'll play with it more later.
i never used security i changed mine to open
i just connected my wifes htc status to my hotspot and it worked great
Just a heads up, PDA net will throw a flag up to AT&T and they can detect that you are tethering. Just a FYI in case u aren't paying for the tethering plan and if you're on a unlimited plan they have been threatening about taking your unlimited plan away and putting you automatically on a tethering plan.
They were doing this to a lot if the OG owners and I got my text and letter from them also while I was doing it on my OG
I have never used pda net or any other app to tether since froyo came out with it built in and i have never once been served by att for tethering i also dont go bananas when tethering either but i have unlimited data and i have been tethering over 2 years now and nothing so much as a peep from att
awesome! Working nicely for me! Thanks for making this phone kick more ass everyday.
Well when I got the text I quickly replied with a phone call. After 30 mins of arguing with them I just give up. I regularly use between 5-7 gb a month n don't want to take the risk of them dropping me to 4gb tethering plan and paying for every gb i go over 4.

I am going to retract my statement, mine does not work. My IPad just sits there and tries to connect to it. Mobile AP can connect the Ipad to my Atrix 2 but it does not direct it out to the internet.
HMM well i know in the system\apps there is a apk called entitlement.apk i have deleted it in mine ONLY AFTER MAKING A BACKUP OF IT and then the mobile ap would not even turn on it did nothing when i tried to activate it so i have restored it i am gonna try some more things tonight and see

You may want to look at my post above to @bimmer. There may be some conflict between your apps and the tether DHCP. I have the same problem of getting the IP (it should start with 192.168.). You should check to see which IP that you iPad gets. If it starts with 169 then DHCP is not working.
Im currently using the wifi tether app to teather on my rooted s3 and for some reason i randomly disconnect from internet on my computer every so often. Im not sure whats going on or whats causing it but its a real issue when i'm running a game and randomly dc 3 times in 30 minutes =/
does anyone have any ideals on how to fix this? or is anyone else having the same problem?
- Make sure your phone has good or better reception and leave it in the same spot.
- Check the power settings on your computer, make sure the wireless card doesnt go to sleep.
- Make sure you run your app when plugged in to AC power.
Other suggestions:
- Use USB tether instead - like it or not its more reliable.
- Try a different app.
Hope some of this helps..

YES. Both FoxFi and Wifi Tether work poorly on my Verizon GS3. Speedtests are slower while tethering on my GS3 than when using Wifi Tether on my old Thunderbolt in the same room/same time/same server. Sometimes the SSID won't be detected by my computers and sometimes both apps will simply stop connecting to the internet after initially starting up fine.

Yeah same everything besides phone. Same 3g same spot in room, tbh today i switched back to my old phone just to stop the lag =/ im running the stripped stock rooted rom and wifitether. But like other people here are saying seems like a ton of issues. On this phone i had to mod my radio card could that be the issue with the s3?
This all sounds like another variation of this thread on XDA VZW s3 General
I don't have 4g so I can't see if my phone has an issue there *but* I do have issues on 3g.
If you have poor battery life and your calls sound like you're on the verge of losing the call even though you're in a known area you haven't had issue before, you could be experiencing the same issues others are experiencing. Verizon, as a result, has labeled by device DOA, even though I am tethering on it at this moment to type this.

Verizon can see if you are rooted and any custom rom or modified kernel you are using. They have full access to all the information in the "about phone" screen in settings. If they wanted to deny a warranty claim due to being rooted, all they would have to do is look on their systems and see what you were running.

They can see your radio version every time you connect to their towers, They can see your software/kernel/baseband if they like through the information your phone sends to them as you use it. Also they still have stuff like Carrier IQ on phones that COULD even read you your text messages if they wanted. Dont think they cant see it because they can. They just dont let you know they can because it could be considered illegal.

This is BS because if that's the case they would have made me pay full price on two different occasions for phones that were rooted when I sent them back.

Seeing the radio version doesn't tell any carrier that someone is rooted. Being rooted is software related not radio related. Not unless custom radios are around, which is not available for the tbolt and im sure not for any other phone for that matter.
The only info phones send to the network is account information so the tower knows whether or not to provide service. That's it.
If they knew more details about a device then they would have no reason to ask us about our phone. They wouldn't waste their time as the info would pop up on their computer screens. If they saw anything other than the latest official OTA, then they would tell you that they can't do anything and that you voided your warranty so even switching back to stock won't make them change their mind.
The fact they would "waste" time to find out every detail from you pretty much sums up that this info is NOT available to them. CSRs like to help the customer as quickly as possible to get them off the line and help the next. And at this moment, asking customers about their phones is the quickest way.

So you think that those little forum signatures that can tell you what OS you are running, what browser and even your IP know more about your phone than your carrier?
Must be nice to be that gullible.
Think what you will, I know for a fact they can see the information. They literally don't care. The warranty is through another company and has nothing to do with Verizon. It is also perfectly legal to root your phone and do what you want with it as of July 26 2010 http://www.androidguys.com/2010/07/26/rooting-android-phone-longer-crime/
The only thing it does is void any extended warranty you bought. So do restore to stock for returns to asurion and the likes.
They ask you because the lower tier CS people do not have access to your phone information, if you are escalated enough you will eventually find someone who can and will rattle off all your information to you.
If you can provide proof then I will take back what I said and apologize. I've played dumb before in the past just to see if it was possible for tier 2 and 3 (technical departments) to know this information. I simply stated that I didn't know how to access the about phone section. They tried to "help" me access this section and i pretended I was getting frustrated. I asked them to see if there was a way for them to see it on their systems and they told me no. They couldn't "help" me with my pretend issue unless I gave them this info. So all I was given was generic troubleshooting tips. They then stated to take it to the store for the CSR to look at my phone for the software version. I did this on a couple of occasions just to get a different Rep each time.
Yes, your mobile browser sends browser info to a website, and OS info. User agent strings are sent so that a website will know how to display the website on the browser. You can easily set the user agent to the stock HTC user agent. But this is irrelevant to Verizon as I can install different browsers on my phone which have unique user agents for each one. Just because my phone sends a dolphin user agent or maxathon user agent and not the stock HTC user agent, this does not imply I am rooted.
OS version is very easy to hack. You can edit this by going to the build.prop and change the OS version to the stock version and I'm sure there is a hack to fake the kernal (you might have to recompile the kernal to change the name)
All the IP address provides is the owner of the IP address (i.e. verizon) and in some cases, the general location of where the IP is being used. Verizon's LTE/EHRPD network use private IP addresses so it would be difficult to pin point a phone or information based on IP. This network uses Dynamic IPs so your IP will not be the same all the time. You have to pay extra to get a static address (business account). It is illegal to use an IP to gain access to any additional information unless a court order demands this.
The point of this is that you can pretty much make your rooted phone appear stock if it was really necessary to do so. Its a variant of Linux and Linux is very easy to work with if you know what you are doing.

Yup, does anyone just randomly do this though?
Sorry to cause the topic to get sidetracked like this, I was just trying to point out that Verizon don't care if we root or not.

If you can root your phone, then its a start. Your typical average user doesn't know what root means or even care what possibilities exist. I am pretty much the only person at my job who is rooted and I've had people ask me how I got my phone to look a certain way and they want their phone like this. When I explain the root process, they say screw that. Most people I know who are rooted know exactly what they can do with a rooted device. And new comers to rooting eventually pick up speed. Linux may be intimidating at first, but once you play around, you see how easy it is.

rooting a friends phone:
Try Open Garden or WiFi Tethering (root) apps from market.
You've conflated a couple questions here.
"Which ROMs have a built-in feature for WiFi tethering?"
Most, if not all, do.
"Given that T-Mobile generally prohibits tethering, is there a way that I can tether in a way that I am not blocked by T-Mobile?"
Yes, there are several ways that you can make the traffic appear as though it originated on your phone. Most, if not all, of these are applications, use of things like VPN or ssh tunneling, or configuration of your tethered clients. There are several approaches. Search is your friend on finding one that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Yes that works or just go to settings>wireless and networks>tethering. No need for an app if its built in but if you want one there's plenty to choose from
Wifi tethering used to work no problem on my phone but T-Mobile very recently seems to have changed something where they can detect it - on ICS ROM's - and block it in the browser on your computer. It takes a few link clicks to get the blocked page.
For this - I have to switch to a google related user agent to not have wifi tethering blocked.

that's funny, i'm using aokp (latest team acid build), and i was just using wifi tethering with no problems at all. not to mention that i'm not even supposed to have it since i have the new plan "truly unlimited 4g." the problem i do have though is usb tethering. i gave my team members a log to see if its fixable the other day, but haven't heard anything yet. its no big deal to me unless i wanna use it to tether my pc when our dsl daily cap is reached (which is everyday, but "i" don't use the pc everyday). basically just gave em the log to try and help those who do want/need it.

It was new for me. And only through the browser. Still connects no problem but after several clicks it will pop up a T-Mobile page saying I don't have the tethering package. I am on Raver's ICS Audiophile.
I was tethering just fine on vacation last week, until I got a text message from T-mobile saying they were blocking it, and sure enough it quit working.
I gotta look into the user agent spoofing I guess... at least before my next trip.
(All three of the hotels I was in were changing $5-10 for internet!)
T-Mobile is on a roll!
Didn't actually think they were gonna give something for nothing did ya.
They know that with strategic planning...(lower the plan price and give you more data)....if they give a little....you'll want more,so now they can ask for more, and sleep soundly when they go to bed at night.
So mine got blocked too, took me a couple of hours last night but found a way around it using Bluetooth Open Garden and VPN combination. Back to free tethering....victory over TMobile!....for now at least.

So using just the VPN client still blocked you??
Yeah, but it's possible that was just because I was trying multiple solutions. I'll look at it again tonight and see if I can substitute the Bluetooth with WiFi and keep it working. I think it might be in my proxy settings....it was late and I was happy to just get access.

Or you can change the user agent for your browser and just use wifi tethering as you normally would. It is a pretty simple fix.

I thought with Google Chrome you have to have the Developers Tools open for that to persist. Is there a simple way to make it stick without having to have the developer tools window open? Thanks.
Edit: Ok, so tried the APN switch on Google chrome last night and it did work, while the developers tools window is open. Only issue was that some of the sites that my wife uses that have display issues on mobile web now have the same issue on the PC...I'm not talking about page layout, but specific links and options not displaying....the reason she still needs to use the PC in the first place. I can definitely recommend the APN fix to people being blocked by Tmobile as a quick simple fix as previously stated in this thread. It took a little longer to set up, but I'm sticking with the VPN for full functionality.
Regarding the wifi use with VPN; I haven't been able to get it to work yet, so sticking with the Bluetooth for now.

I just installed a new Android-based head unit into my BMW, and it's supposed to rely on your phone for internet access. Since I have a mobile share plan with AT&T and have been able to tether all sorts of things to my One X (including my N7), I didn't figure to have any problems.
Well, I have. The head unit sees the phone just fine, and will connect most of the time, but it either stalls on "Acquiring IP address" or appears to connect but gets no internet access.
I've played around with the settings to no avail. I tried setting a static IP address on the head unit, and though that got me past the acquiring address issue, it still can't get an internet connection.
This unit has a reputation for being finicky about tethering, but every other discussion of this issue I've seen is about problems seeing the phone or connecting at all. So I'm thinking this is related to the connection setting, not a hardware conflict.
Any ideas?
If you have wireless at your home see if the radio will connect to your home router if it has enough range. That will eliminate a problem with the radio. Other than that I don't know it should connect?

Yeah, I forgot to mention that--it connects to my home router with no issues at all. That's what's so frustrating.

It shouldn't but I would try a third party app just to see if there's a difference. What have you got to lose?
Ya HTC phones have these issues for some reason, you prob already installed WiFi fix from op in viper thread? Also broadcast ssid first time then you can shut off broadcast . Android in general hates hidden ssid. Check what band and make sure its same . (Wireless n &g). There may be some issue with accepting connection. When I set up hotspot on phone it would ask permission on phone and on device trying to connect. Also if you have es file manager you can set up server on phone through that program . I would say it will all sudden connect and you will be good. Also try messing with static and dynamic settings . But def make sure you have WiFi partitions installed found on op in viperxl thread

Nothing worked. I finally gave up and went and got a portable hotspot at the AT&T store. Of course it connected immediately with no issues. Fortunately I'm on a mobile share plan so it's all the same data.
